Pen Path

Bitmap images such as RAW, TIFF and JPEG are made up of pixels. The advantage of bitmap files is that the individual pixels may be adjusted, allowing precise colour editing in programs such as Photoshop. The disadvantages of bitmap files include the problem of detail loss when the file is enlarged, as beyond a maximum size the individual pixels become visible. Vector images, however, are made up of mathematically calculated lines and curves and do not lose detail as they are enlarged. Vector images are best used when blocks of colour are required eg. logos and typefaces, and are used in digital illustration and graphic design programs such as Illustrator.

While layer masks work with selection tools and brushes, vector masks work with the pen and shape tools. A vector mask can be adjusted at any point by editing the path made with the pen or shape tool. Vector masks can be combined with a layer mask and converted to a regular layer mask by rasterising the mask. A handy shortcut is CMD + click on the layer mask icon to add a vector mask.

-What’s a bitmap file compared to a Vector file? 

A bitmap image is formed by pixels which are small squares containing a colour. All pixels form an image. You can edit bitmap graphics by erasing or changing their colour in individual pixels using Photoshop. Vector images on the other hand are based on mathematical formulas with lines and curves turned into geometric objects making the image. They can be edited in Adobe Illustrator. These files are usually smaller because they don’t need to contain the colour information for each pixel unlike bitmap images. Vector images are also more scalable which means that even if you zoom in the image, it will appear as smooth as not zoomed in because of the mathematical formula redrawing the image (unlike the bitmap image where you can see the pixels). PNG, JPEG and GIF are bitmap formats. They’re best for images with a lot of colour gradations like photos, while vector formats (SVG) are better for logos for example.

-What’s the difference between a Layer Mask & a Vector Mask?

They work the same way hiding or revealing the image but they use different tools. A vector mask is a resolution independent path that clips out the contents of the layer thanks to pen or shape tools (with anchor points) while a layer mask is a resolution dependent image created with painting and selection tools.

-Task 1, In Photoshop: make a perfect circle and create a path using the pen tool around it.

I made two circles using first the pen tool then the curvature pen tool (as pictured above). I only used four anchor points with the pen tool as the curves were simple and could be divided into four curves. Then I tried to draw a circle using the curvature Pen tool and it was a bit easier to manipulate and more intuitive for drawing a circle.

Task 2, Download the ‘Vector T-shirt’. Make a Pen Path around the T shirt with as few anchor points as possible, ensure you are using the handle bars to adjust the curves. Save the Pen Path as above. Add a Vector Mask to hide the background, leaving the T shirt, place a new background (your choice) behind the T shirt.

Pen Path

A bitmap image, also known as a raster image, is made up of pixels. The bitmap is a formation of binary data representing the values of pixels in an image or display. A pixel is a block of colour. It is the smallest individual part of a digital image. Every digital photograph is made up of a grid of pixels.

A vector image are images that are constructed  by mathematical formulas that form points on a grid. They are shapes and lines created by mathematical equations. The shapes can be filled with solid colours or gradients or they can have strokes or they can have both a fill and a stroke.

The difference between a Bitmap File and a Vector File

Shown above is a gigantic blue jet observed from Campina Grande, Paraíba Brazil, on March 13, 2017. Blue jets are a very high altitude lightning, occasionally detected emerging from above the top of strong thunderstorms; above where lightning within the storm is most active. These funnel-shaped jets move upwards at velocities of approximately 100 km/s (Mach 300) and may extend to altitudes of about 30 mi (50 km).

This jet was recorded by my detection network that I refer to as BRAMON -- Brazilian Network of Meteor Detection. To our knowledge, it was the first such blue jet lightning recording in Brazil. The cumulonimbus cloud that generated it was roughly 60 mi (100 km) from my location. BRAMON consists of a simple security camera (CCTV) with a nighttime high-sensitivity lens (F1.0). Whenever thunderstorms are within my visual range of view, I point the camera toward the storm cloud and hope for results such was captured during this attempt.

Photo Details: Through a USB video grabber, the camera sends a signal to a computer. A specific software (UFO Capture) monitors and saves videos, images and other information.
