First day
Well that was really something! Last night, I couldn’t sleep. I was nervous and excited, wondering what I would be doing, what the teachers would be like, would I get to school on time and so on. Well, I managed it and have to say, it was a great day. It was a bumpy start as I was really very warm from the journey. I couldn’t find an intercom like they advised to look for so I went straight to the teacher room and announced my arrival, “Shitsureshimasu! Ohayou gozaimasu!” I was met with a chorus of replies from maybe 15 or 20 teachers. I smiled and was led into the principal’s room where I was met with a couch and two seats. We were advised on this, to be careful not to sit on on the wrong seat, so I stayed standing until they offered me the seat. I was allowed to make small talk, present my gifts and wait patiently to be invited into the main teaching room to ‘introduce myself’. Not so difficult, I think. 'Please do this in Japanese’, smiled the principal. Oh… Okay. That’s what I get for saying good morning in Japanese.
I ambled through, bowed and noticed the room had doubled in size. All 40 teachers had arrived. They had asked me to arrive at 8.00am to be able to meet everyone before the lessons started at 8.20am! Wow. I was nervous every, stumbled through some phrases, bowed and was met with a round of bows and applause too.
After being show to my desk, they asked if I wanted to see the school. I accepted and walked out in to a sea of bodies! So many people laughing, cheering, shouting 'hello!’ or 'nice to meet you!’, giggling when I waved back. It was really novel. After that, it was back to the teacher’s room where I showed an interest in the baseball, soccer and basketball teams. To be continued!
