Friday September 29, 2023 - Saturday September 30, 2023
This week went by really fast! I got up at 6am and did my meditation and yoga before heading to breakfast at 7:30am. We had the option of a two mile hike, with time for showers and packing afterwards.
It was a gorgeous sunny day. Perry said we were hiking by the swimming beach so I wore my suit under my clothes this morning. It was just a few blocks to the beach, and we visited with some swimmers there. They said the water felt warmed than the air (it was in the fifties this morning, but will warm up fast). We climbed the hill to the ruins of a fort that defended the harbor. It had anti-aircraft gun tracks still embedded in the front of the turrets. We enjoyed the view there and then did a loop walk along the coast, and back through the meadows - lots of folks out exercising their dogs there, fun to see.
Back to the beach, Perry, Cale and I joined the locals for a swim. The beach was mostly protected from the surf, with a rocky bottom. I prided myself in not hollering this time, but it was very could. It took me a long time to have my breathing return to a relaxed state! Even though it was protected, I had to swim really hard to get out to the float and beyond that to the swim area boundaries, so I probably was working against a tidal influence. My body was starting to feel tingly, so I headed back to shore. I was completely invigorated afterwards!
We walked back to the hotel for quick showers, packed away our hiking gear and got ready for travel. We had a final “brunch” scones, tea sandwiches, and some desserts. Didn’t need to eat again, but we did anyway (and took scones for the road). Then we said goodbye to Perry and Cale and boarded our coach to the train station at Exeter. It was a solemn group, most people probably thinking ahead to home and next week I guess. As we drove, it struck me that by staying primarily on the coastal path, we actually saw very little of Cornwall. But what we did experience is steeping in centuries of history and tradition; how lucky we’ve been to have this visit!
We said our goodbyes in Exeter, some were staying there, others, like us, taking the train to London. We had an hour before the train, and I was surprised to see a Starbucks in the station (my app still works)!
The train left as scheduled at 2:54 pm, and was an easy two hour ride to London. I reclaimed two cribbage games, narrowing JTs lead for the trip to 4 games now.
At Paddington Station, we caught the Heathrow Express train. It felt good to have figured out the system and confidently work our way through the turnstiles and onto the train. The Express takes just 15 minutes to get from Paddington Station to Heathrow. Since it didn’t matter what terminal we went to as we’re just heading to our hotel, we hopped on the first train leaving.
I’d reserved a room at the Renassiance (Marriott points), and it was close to the airport, but not connected to the airport. I realized it was too short of a drive to want to entice taxi or Uber drivers to transport us, but toooooooo crazy to try to walk it. Last week I researched hotel shuttles and found the “HotelHoppa” that is essentially airport hotel shuttles (for a fee). I downloaded the app and bought a ticket, but we still had to find the shuttle stop. I confidently led us from the train to Heathrow’s “Central Bus Terminal,” but those were tour buses and buses going into the city. A helpful employee told us we’d find the hotel shuttles one floor up near Terminal Two. Once we found the stop, I used the app to follow the bus and track its arrival. We were lucky to get on first, and they crammed it full of travelers and their luggage - a large group of loud guys traveling together - almost needed my headphones!
We arrived at the Renaissance about 6:30pm, impressed with what we’d navigated since we left the hotel in Fowey at noon! We went down to the bar for an early, light (other than the Guinness) dinner. Early to bed and due to the airport proximity, I put in ear plugs from the start and slept well until 3am when my ears were sore from the plugs and my brain was done sleeping! I caught up posting photos to the blog and took a shower to be ready for our 7:54 am departure on the “HotelHoppa” back to Heathrow.
The shuttle dropped us off at the door for Delta/Virgin Atlantic. A long line at check in, but we had “Fast Track” passes through security (reminded me of Disney World) and our Delta Platinum status got us into the Aspire Lounge (which made me think of our jolly guy at the Inverness airport). We had another English Breakfast, declined the Prosecco and the shower, and had a relaxing hour before our flight boarded. Good to go into a day of travel in a relaxed state.
It was an uneventful flight. Even though we booked it on Delta, this was on Virgin Atlantic, so it was a little different. I watched a couple of movies and a couple of episodes with Caesar the Dog Trainer and before we knew it we were in Atlanta and it was 2:30pm and I was trying to convince myself that it actually was. A forty minute taxi ride north of town to the Renaissance where Jeff’s meeting and our conference will be this week. This is our 17th different accommodation of this trip (!) and we’ll be here for six nights. Got settled, washed out some clothes and I’m ready to go shopping for some conference clothes!

Another fucking flight. And to London, no less, for the second time this year. He had to muster up literally all of his self-restraint to not kill the woman talking on her phone loudly at the airport. Not to mention he had to change into the uncomfortably small and puny human form, walking around instead of slithering. He always had a slightly weird gait, a bit like he was gliding around on ice skates. The travel was troublesome enough as it was, and it certainly wasn't made easier by having to manipulate his "blood doll" into appearing fit to travel by plane and not raise any suspicion - the man's gaze was visibly absent and scared. They made it through both airports rather easily though, thank fuck.
Fortunately, his taxi driver was already waiting for him, and it didn't take him long to find him – a small respite in the neverending parade of irritation. Sitting in the car, bracing for another hour or so of travel; unfortunately, he would have to stay in Andover for the day, as there weren't any convenient, direct flights from either Rzeszów nor Kraków to London that would arrive early enough in the night. This, of course, didn't help, and while it was only 2:14 AM when he left Heathrow, he was already getting a little nervous about the time, stabbing his thigh repeatadely with his claws while travelling, getting blood on the upholstery.
When they arrived, he tricked the driver into thinking the ride was paid in advance and checked into the absolutely shitty place Jackie has directed him to. This would have to do, though, as the alternative was risking seeing sunlight on his way to an even bigger middle of nowhere somewhere outside of Exeter. He read for a while before going to sleep; the room was darkened enough for it to be safe, but he preferred to lock himself in the bathroom, with no windows, and sleep sitting under a wall. It's not like he really needed comfort, to be fair - and this was safer.
An uncomfortable flight, but they all were. Jain didn't bother to book for comfort when speed was more impertinent to handle. Then again flying from Gotham to England was going to be an unpleasant one no matter how luxurious the vessel or not. A mistake had to be fixed- a mistake Jain himself made in haste and haze of mind, and now he needed to deal with the issue in person. Not just for ease of action but to make a solid enough point with local dealings.
Once landed, Jain found himself in Andover- it was too risky to fly to London proper given the circumstances, and this was less than ideal of a destination. It brought back stale, bitter memories- ones Jain had worked hard to bottle and stuff away in his new life. Even the smell of the place caused him to itch anxiously. He kept his hands to his sides, setting off to go handle business.
@szemiesza
#//they should probably run into one another on the next night when melchior is preparing to leave#//jain can get some sort of hint during the day like a smell or sth#//lol. lmao.

As a police officer, has someone ever been so terrified when you pulled them over for something minor that it broke your heart?
Not sure of the exact date, but it would have been mid to late ’80s in Bristol city centre.
Late one evening I was in a crew of 6 in a transit van when we saw a knackered looking Fiat 127 (they were never brilliant when new, let alone one that was 15 years old!). Half of the lights were out, smoke from the exhaust (and lots of noise).
Pulled the car over, and found it contained 2 adults and 3 children (all under 6 or 7 at a guess). Occupants were of obvious Asian descent (not unusual for that area of Bristol), so I started to ask the usual questions whilst a colleague looked over the car (which was found to have 3 bald tyres, no window wipers and a lot of rusty holes in the bodywork).
The driver and adult passenger were almost in tears, and trying to speak in English, which wasn’t that great. I established that they were Mauritian, and had only arrived in the UK that day. Once I spoke to them in French they looked relieved (my French isn’t brilliant, but was better than their English). He produced a Mauritian Driving Licence, and when asked for insurance and registration for the car (which they had purchased upon arrival at the airport), they produced a hand-written receipt showing that they had paid £1000.00 cash for the car! (it was worth about 20 quid scrap value, and certainly shouldn’t have been on a road). Even worse, he proudly produced another hand-written “Insurance Certificate” for which he had paid the car seller another £300.
They had come here to attend a family funeral, and had been royally ripped off by some scumbag near Heathrow as they needed to get down to Bristol as soon as possible.
Obviously, we couldn’t let them continue driving as it was unlikely to get them very far anyway, and was a liability to everyone else on the road.
I had no intention of getting my pen anywhere near to an official ‘ticket’, and explained the game to my Sergeant - who fully agreed with me.
All the time, the family were getting more and more upset as they started to realise the situation they were in and the trouble they thought they were in.
We took them back to our station (and a colleague drove their car), fed and watered them, spoke to relatives by telephone, and sorted out as much as we could at that time.
They were taken to a hotel for the night and agreed to surrender the car for destruction.
As the story spread throughout the night (between other colleagues, paramedics, fire-fighters, hospital staff and taxi drivers…. that was the way things were in the City at that time) offers of help came in.
By the time we went off duty at 0700 hours, the hotel bill had been waived, a taxi was ready to take them down to Exeter (their intended destination), and a collection had raised just under a grand in cash. Toys had been donated for the children, and small ‘gifts’ for the adults.
By the time they arrived in Exeter, the local police had found and purchased a small run-around car which wasn’t great, but had a few months of MOT and tax left on it, and was roadworthy… enough for their use whilst they were in the country.
We got a lovely letter from them once they were back in Mauritius, thanking us for the help we gave (and arranged) - but we only did what we could to help someone who needed it, and had been badly treated by opportunistic scum.
Edit:-
Thanks for the gramatical corrections - I try my best, but often fail!
I’ve never had a higher-rated answer on Quora, or received so many comments - Thank you, everybody.
It is not often that I bother to answer many questions, being a ‘reserved’ British ex-cop many situations just don’t seem worthy of reply, or have already got a few good answers.
I fully appreciate that probably 95% of the questions (and thus, answers) are posted from the USA, and whilst i find them interesting to read, are often so alien to a British way of thinking that I see no advantage in adding to them.
Anyone who reads my other (very few!) answers on Quora will see that I have some views and oppinions on some things - mainly to counter the critics and troll posters when it gets a bit ‘personal’, or to defend those who I feel need it.
I have no desire to be a “super user” on here, despair at many of the “questions” asked, but still feel that (every so often) even the British have something useful to add to this world.
All credits to Quora.

UK temperatures low as -9 as Mini Beast from the East continues
The Beast from the East is back with a vengeance this weekend as large parts of Britain are battered by 'dangerously cold' winds and up to 12 inches of snow. A 'risk to life' weather warning has been issued for the south west of England, where thick snow and winds of up to 50mph risk taking down trees and power cables. There is still heavy snow on the ground in Scotland, with 12.7 inches covering some areas, along with a thick blanket across the north, north east and the midlands. Yellow weather warnings for snow and ice are also in place across most of England, where snow and icy road conditions could force drivers to abandon their vehicles. Londoners will see an inch of snow today. Remote parts of Devon and Cornwall face blackouts later today as snow, ice and gale force winds threaten to cut off isolated communities. Thousands of passengers at London Heathrow faced disruption this morning after 146 flights were cancelled due to adverse weather conditions.
With freezing temperatures hitting large parts of Britain from the west of Russia, a thick blanket of snow covers the Wallington Hall crocus garden in Northumberland where it is zero degrees today
The crocus garden at Wallington Hall is pictured this time last year, when temperatures were around 14C to (57C). Today they are 0C
People are waking up to snowy scenes in Denshaw, Greater Manchester this morning after snow continued to fall overnight
Staff at Whatton Manor Stud in the Vale of Belvoir, East Midlands are pictured braving the snowy grounds this morning

The Beast from the East is back: With below freezing temperatures across the UK and thick snowfall in some parts, a vehicle recovery driver is pictured fitting snow socks to his AA van in preparation for potential road rescues today
Uh oh! Large amounts of ice and snow overnight sent this minibus crashing into a tree in West Bridgford, Nottinghamshire
Icy conditions send a taxi minibus crashing into a tree after thick snow fell in the West Bridgford area of Nottinghamshire
Treacherous conditions are expected in Birmingham after inches of snow fell overnight. This road in Hockley is almost impassable
A snow and ice weather warning is in place for almost all of England and south Wales. Pictured is a snowy road in Birmingham Temperatures are due to drop below freezing, but winds of up to 50mph will make it feel a 'dangerously cold' -8C (17.6F). Met Office forecaster Steven Keates told MailOnline: 'It's going to be another exceptionally cold day today, especially for March. 'A severe penetrating freeze in some parts of the country will make it feel between -5C and -8C, it's going to be pretty unpleasant in some places. 'Winds from the west of Russia and Finland will bring similar conditions to those we had a few weeks ago. 'With lying snow on the ground across the north of England and eastern Scotland, there will also be showers across most of England and southern Wales.'
Snow and ice is causing problems across all of England and Wales today, with Scotland facing heavy snow on the ground
Eastern Scotland (pictured left) has over a foot of snow lying on the ground from the thick blanket that fell overnight, while nearly all of Wales (right) remains adversely affected by ice and snow

A man is pictured trying to dig his Land Rover out of a snow drift in Coalville, north west Leicestershire today
Two wrapped up revellers desperately battle the cold in Bradford in the early hours as amber weather warnings are issued
Heavy snow showers are expected in north east England, the north Midlands and parts of Hampshire, Sussex and Kent
A car is pictured stuck in the ice and snow in Bradford this morning after showers hit large parts of the country yesterday At least 146 flights in and out of London's Heathrow Airport have already been cancelled for Sunday as Britain continues to be battered by the 'Mini Beast from the East'. Holidaymakers are being advised to check their flight details before risking a journey to the airport. Three snowploughs have been dispatched to the M62, which connects Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds after bad conditions brought traffic to a standstill. Greater Manchester Police's traffic unit said conditions were 'bleak' on the trans-Pennine route, with footage from the area showing blizzard-like conditions. Local road police teams have warned the A54, A537 and B5470 in Cheshire are either closed or impassable and they will not be able to rescue drivers who find themselves stranded. In Gloucester, which faces an amber weather warning, the A38 is highly treacherous, with motorists asked to avoid travel if possible. Advising drivers who do have to head out today, Ella Colley Halfords' winter expert, said: 'With the Mini Beast From The East hitting the UK, and snow hitting most areas, we're advising drivers to check their wipers – they need to be in good working order to clear the windscreen. 'Poor visibility doesn't just make driving in the snow unpleasant but failing to see a hazard quickly can slow your reaction time. 'Drivers should also give their car a quick health check by checking screen wash, tyre pressure and keeping extra clothes, warm drinks and a mobile phone handy.' Those hoping to travel by train today face heavily delayed timetables, with the Heathrow Connect, Heathrow Express, Thameslink, Southern and Gatwick Express services in and out of London affected by bad weather. Elsewhere Arriva Trains Wales, CrossCountry, East Midlands Trains, Great Northern, Great Western Railway, Hull Trains, Island Line Northern and South Western Railway services also delayed or cancelled in parts.
Picture perfect: In other parts of the country the snow has brought idyllic scenes. In Southampton a thick blanket fell overnight
Is it really March? Gorgeous winter scenes are pictured at Harpsden Woods in Henley on Thames, Oxfordshire today
A thick blanket of snow is pictured covering a woodland area in Henley on Thames, Oxfordshire this morning

Winter or Spring? Spring daffodils are pictured covered in snow after thick showers fell in Henley on Thames, Oxfordshire
Even the ponies are cold! A horse is pictured desperately trying to keep warm in the snow in Dunsden Green, Oxfordshire
Londoners will also have to battle the snow when they're out and about today. A dog is pictured trudging through the snow in a north London park Today's sporting schedule has also been decimated by the weather as a second wave of snow inside a month hit the UK. Derby's Championship clash with Cardiff at Pride Park fell due to the snowfall over Pride Park, while in rugby union the Anglo-Welsh Cup final between Bath and Exeter was cancelled. The clash was due to be played at Gloucester's Kingsholm but snowfall left the conditions unsafe. In rugby league, Castleford held a 10am pitch inspection for their Super League game with Wigan only for the game to fall foul. A short drive away, York's game with Swinton - being played at Featherstone - was set to go ahead.
Postcard perfect scenes in Blackhouse Woods in Berkshire this morning after freezing temperatures kept snow on the ground
Deadly cold: A graveyard in Berkshire is pictured covered in a thick blanket of snow this morning as icy temperatures remain Bouncing babies and some VERY snowy walks: Mailonline readers share their fun snaps of the weather As large parts of the UK wake up to snowy scenes this morning, MailOnline readers have been braving the cold to capture it on camera. With over 12 inches expected on the ground in parts of Scotland and a thick blanket covering parts of the north and the midlands, getting in the car is out of the question for many. There are winds of up to 50mph forecast for Devon, Cornwall and other parts of the south west later on today with some rural communities completely cut off. Temperatures will fall below freezing but winds from the Mini Beast from the East will make it feel more like -8C (17.6F).
