Ivy curled herself up to Max's side. She drew shapes on his chest. She looked up to meet Max's eyes. She bit her lip as she thought back to when Lando messaged her on Instagram just after the Australian Grand Prix.

She had been extrememly giddy when she entered the club for the Australian GP after party that Lando had invited her to. He had messaged her earlier about how Max wanted her number.

They had met briefly, but oh my god, Ivy was mesmerized by his deep blue eyes and adorable smile. Her hands were trembling as she made her way through the club to join Lando and his friends.

Max had been there.

And he had bought her drink, as Ivy had suggested he'd do before he went off to scold Lando for sliding in Ivy's DM's for him.

Ivy and Max ended up talking the entire night in the far corner of the VIP section of the fancy club. She decided she liked to hear him talk; she liked his accent. He had escorted her out of the club with a firm hand on the small of her back at two in the morning. He ordered a taxi for them to share and held her hand as they drove through the streets of Melbourne.

Max told the taxi driver to wait outside her building so he could walk her to the door. And okay, Ivy admits, the bar was set pretty low by her shitty exes, but it was one of the nicest things someone had done for her.

They had stood in silence for a while.

"I-," they laughed when they both spoke at the same time.

"Will you let me take you out tomorrow?" Max had asked as he held her hand.

Ivy had smiled at him, "I would. But I'm off to Perth to work on my next album." She squeezed his hand. She dropped his hand to fish a piece of paper out of her purse. She had shivered slightly; her sheer dress did nothing to keep her warm.

She had slipped the piece of paper in the pocket of his jacket. She then went to stand on her tiptoes and pressed her lips against his cheek.

"Good night, Max."

Max had then shown up in Perth just a couple of days after Ivy had arrived. Supposedly to go visit Daniel on his farm, but in reality he just couldn't stop thinking about the blonde singer.

And well, the rest is pretty much history.

Max had taken her to Daniel's farm for a couple of days before having to go to Japan to meet his friends. They had a ski trip planned, Max had wanted to cancel his plans. Ivy told him to go, that he was being ridiculous.

He went, but on the condition she would join him in Japan to watch the race in Suzuka.

And here they were. In Max's hotel room. The morning light was softly filtering through the room as Ivy continued to draw shapes on his chest.

"I didn't think we were being that obvious."

Ivy looked up at him with an eyebrow raised. Max had been anything but subtle about the whole thing. Liking her Instagram posts, commenting underneath them. And then talking about how much he liked her songs on his streams.

Max pulled her on top of him. "They're gonna be even more suspiscous when you watch the race from the Red Bull garage." He pulled her down so his lips could meet hers in a kiss. "I can't wait to see Oscar having an aneurysm when he sees you in the paddock."

The singer gasped, "Max!" She playfully hit him on the shoulder. "That's my brother." She sternly looked at him.

Max simply looked at her with raised eyebrows. He placed his arms behind his head as Ivy's face cracked and a smile crept on her face.

"God, it'll be so fun to see him lose his mind."

"We don't have to walk in together," Max looked at Ivy. She was chewing on her lip, something Max noticed she did when she was nervous or stressed. He grabbed her shaking hand and intertwined their fingers.

Ivy let out a relieved sigh, "I really do want to go public at some point. I just, my last relationship was so public and I,"

"Hey, hey, you don't have to justify it or apologise for it. I would also like to keep things between us for now."

He squeezed her hand three times just before the car came to a halt. Ivy leaned up to kiss his cheek, "I'll come see you before quali."

"Counting on it!"

Max winked before he got out of the car with his backpack strapped around his shoulders. Ivy waited a respectable five minutes before entering the paddock herself; a shiny Red Bull paddock pass hanging from her neck.

deadpan & deadly

A recent TV favourite is the Australian crime comedy MR INBETWEEN. About a night club bouncer who is embroiled in underworld shadiness on the side. While also raising his ’tween daughter, dating, and caring for his terminally ill brother. 

The 'hitman as everyman' is by now a tired trope, and I wasn’t expecting to like this show as much as I did. However, I was quickly on the hook. Constantly marvelling at the balancing act this series manages, between laughs, and grim spectacles of mortality & dread. A dreadpan comedy. This show manages to be funny, terrifying, and even (surprisingly) poignant. 

All 26 episodes in the 3 season run were written by Scott Ryan, who also stars as Sydney crim, Ray Shoesmith. Every episode was directed by Nash Edgerton, one of the founders of Blue Tongue films. I first became aware of this collective of filmmakers via their short films SPIDER, BEAR and I LOVE SARAH JANE. They’d started making shorts a few years earlier, to support each other and expand their skills. Going on to make several highly regarded feature films (including ANIMAL KINGDOM).

Nash Edgerton started his career as a stuntman on such films as TWO HANDS (a personal fave) and Hollywood blockbusters shot in Australia (like the MATRIX trilogy and STAR WARS prequels) while directing rock videos & short films. Including the one that got him noticed, 1997’s DEADLINE. 

In 2005, Edgerton saw an early 30 minute cut of THE MAGICIAN. A mockumentary following a Melbourne hit man on the job. Scott Ryan wrote, directed, and starred in it himself, on a budget of $3,000. Edgerton helped expand it to feature length, getting it a cinematic release in 2005. Ryan & Edgerton then developed the film into a TV series, and took it to networks. All balked at a show starring the unknown Ryan. 

Then, in 2018, the FX network took a chance on MR INBETWEEN. Perhaps because by that time Edgerton’s stock had risen, having directed feature films THE SQUARE, GRINGO, and several high profile rock videos. Ryan had never been on a professional film set before working on MR INBETWEEN. He'd only done odd jobs. Driving taxis and delivering pizzas since last being in front of the camera, over a decade earlier.

So it’s perhaps understandable that networks hesitated. Assuming that he couldn’t carry a series. However, I’m glad they finally took a chance, as Scott Ryan gives the performance of a well seasoned actor. With range to deliver brilliantly timed deadpan comedy, deadly rage, and even existential sadness.

Being embroiled in the everyday lives of antiheroes is one of TV’s most familiar setups. A ‘way in’ to a loon's life, allowing the average non-psychopath to empathise with (if not exactly like) the main character. We learned to understand Tony Soprano (the prototype for all these recent ‘everyman’ goons) when introduced to him via his therapy sessions. It was hard not to feel for Walter White, as he dealt with his financial & medical emergencies. 

Similarly, when Ray talks about unicorns with his daughter over ice cream, or reads her a children’s book, of course we’ll see the softer side of the hardened crook. But for me, 'getting' Ray, began when he took the blame for his buddy Gary’s porn stash. Discovered by Gary’s wife. In taking a bullet for his mate, and willingly copping naked contempt for it, I began to actually like Ray, and his personal no mate left behind warrior code.

Some early reviews complained that the basic idea for the series was nothing new. It's true that we do see Ray in anger management classes, and other such familiar scenes (entertaining though they may be). However, the series evolves, and by season two I found the stories to be uniquely thrilling affecting and funny. Critics who stayed with the series agree.

The 19-25 minute episodes are miracles of narrative compression. They swoop in, set their explosive timers, and get out. Just like Ray on a mission. Some are purely funny. Focusing on bickering between Ray and his crim cohorts. Or verbal sparring with his daughter & brother (the bogan poetry of my people bantering was, for me, a constant pleasure). There are also brief, existential meditations. Other episodes are barely verbal - action movies distilled to a white knuckled twenty minutes. Taken as a whole, the series is a crime comedy that evolves into something more. A smorgasbord of brilliantly written, acted and directed short films - serving laughter, horror, thrills, and heartbreak.

Nash Edgerton’s most recent directing was for the Irish black comedy thriller BODKIN on Netflix. Scott Ryan is apparently writing new stuff, but has kept a low profile since MR INBETWEEN. That great series had a long gestation, and the next one might too. I'll gladly wait as long as it takes for him to deliver his next gem.

So now, with 15 hours remaining, she was roaming around the for once very silent house in her nightgown and robe. Leaning back against the table, she waited for the milk to boil for her cocoa. She smiled, lost in her own thoughts about that kiss here a few months ago… it was passionate and showed nothing but his love for her. Soon they won’t have to worry about going too far!

He never got used to her wielding a knife or anything similar. He knew she was more than capable but it still made him nervous. They cut the cake and fed it to one another, much to Jean’s embarrassment, but secretly she enjoyed it. The party lasted long into the night. You couldn’t wipe the grin off anyone’s face; they had all waited a long time for this moment. When it reached midnight, the newlyweds decided that it was time to leave. Only the ‘family’ was left. Charlie and Matthew were staying in a hotel to give the newlyweds some space. The small party waved the couple off as they got into the taxi to head home before departing to their own beds. This had been a long time coming, months of almosts led to this moment. But that wasn’t why Lucien was nervous. No one (besides his fellow soldiers in the camp) had seen the scars on his back, ropey and red. There wasn’t just a couple, they laced his back almost entirely. He wasn’t sure how Jean would feel about them. Jean had sat down on the edge of the bed, allowing him to get lost in his thoughts for a moment. Patient as always his Jean. He kneeled in front of her, taking her hands in his. Jean sat there and patiently waited for him to talk to her. He took a deep breath, smiled at her nervously before standing up and turning his back to her. He took off each layer slowly, all while Jean sat in silence. As he took his shirt off, he started to shake. He stood there shirtless with his back to Jean. Waiting for a reaction of some kind. He was just about to turn around when her arms wrapped around his torso. He felt her head rest on his back and place a light kiss onto his skin. He turned around into her arms, but before he could say anything, Jean spoke up. “Lucien, they are part of who you are. I’m not going to stop loving you or leave because of them. I love you, they are part of who you are. I’m not going anywhere – ” Lucien covered her mouth with his before she could finish. Of course, he should have known that to his Jean they were just part of his story, that she wouldn’t love him any less. Jean broke the kiss to turn around, allowing Lucien to undo the buttons on the back of her dress. Which to Jean’s amusement, he found rather annoying and complicated, but nevertheless, he got there eventually. His reward was more than he could have ever asked for. They woke the next morning for the first time in each other’s arms. Jean woke first, always up at the crack of dawn. But this morning she didn’t want to get up. So instead she remained next to her husband, her love, her life and drifted off again. She no longer had to wait, not anymore.

Blatantly Partisan Party Review XVIII: The Independents, Part One

My final reviews are of the independents standing for the upper house, and for my own District of Brunswick in the lower house. You might very well have an independent standing in your lower house seat, but other than Brunswick there are 87 of them. I’m not doing all of those, sorry. Have a spin yourself with old mate Google. Cate Speaks is doing the independents in Pascoe Vale, if you happen to live in that electorate.

I am splitting my reviews of independents into three parts. This entry has independents in Brunswick, and the one independent standing for the upper house seat of Eastern Victoria. The second entry will just be South Eastern Metropolitan, which has many independents. The third entry will be the remaining upper house independents, who are contesting Western Metropolitan and Western Victoria.

District of Brunswick

Ahh, Brunswick. Good pubs on lower Sydney Road; good Mediterranean and Middle Eastern food further up. The Union Hotel Brunswick on Union Street is one of my favourite watering holes on the planet. There is the superb Village Bakery on Grantham Street. Over on Lygon Street is Sugardough, one of the few places in Melbourne where this Kiwi has found a butter chicken pie to rival those made in New Zealand. Trams! And, of course, Brunswick is bursting with excellent live music venues and bands to perform in them. I love nowhere more. Who would represent it in parliament? Well, you have a choice between representatives of the ALP, Animal Justice, Greens, Liberal (ugh), Liberal Democrats (ugghhh), and Reason—the links lead to my reviews. Or you could pick one of the independents:

George Georgiou (Facebook): His platform is simple and direct (the third part is great): “effective transport, good urban planning and trees! lots & lots of trees!” This guy has the sort of policies you might have expected from Transport Matters before discovering it’s a taxi industry front. His Facebook is full of posts about the need to get people out of cars and onto public transport; this post and graph serve as a pretty decent summary of what he wants to do. He comes across as passionate and knowledgeable.

Kerry Sourasis: Hard to find any details at all about Kerry. She might be a senior financial manager at Strategic Financial Group Australia (the uninspiring profile there suggests she would like to have dinner with the Queen and Margaret Thatcher, a big old red flag for me). A Kerry Sourasis is also president of the Kos Club, a group for migrants from the Greek island of Kos and their descendants. If so, it suggests some community engagement. The Moreland Bicycle User Group tracked her down though! In her survey answers (pdf) she does not come across as very informed about some of the key issues facing Brunswick over which the state government has control. She also has the support of a local business, whose Facebook post suggests she will be tougher on crime (suggestive of a right-wing alignment), rejuvenate Sydney Road (it’s pretty damn fine if you ask me), and wants a bike path parallel to Sydney Road (it’s got one already, the Upfield bike path!).

Eastern Victoria

I’m sorry, I can’t wax lyrical about Eastern Victoria like I can about Brunswick, as I have only been beyond Melbourne’s eastern suburbs a couple of times. But as well as the parties contesting this upper house seat that sprawls across Gippsland, there is an independent in the field:

Michael Fozard (Facebook): Fozard has unfurled a “Team Together Gippsland” campaign to redress “false promises” made to the region. The Latrobe Valley Express reports that he was previously a member of the Liberals and the Australian Democrats. I am not warming to the Trumpian tones of his “make Gippsland great (again)” sloganeering, even if (indeed, partly because) he says “it’s just words”. His response to the South Gippsland Sentinel-Times emphasises local feelings of neglect by the state government. And, actually, Cate Speaks has done a fair bit of legwork on this guy, so I will save myself any further repetition and direct you to her profile. He strikes me as right-leaning, but not a far-right crazy.
