Why government shutdowns seem to only happen in US (BBC) The US government has shut down ten times over the past 43 years. Meanwhile, in other countries, governments keep functioning, even in the midst of wars and constitutional crises. So why does this uniquely American phenomenon keep happening? For most of the world, a government shutdown is very bad news—the result of revolution, invasion or disaster. But in the US, it has become a kind of bargaining tool for political leaders—and a perennial phenomenon. So why does this keep happening? America’s federal system of government allows different branches of government to be controlled by different parties. It was a structure devised by the nation’s founders to encourage compromise and deliberation, but lately it has had the opposite effect. Elsewhere in the world, such shutdowns are practically impossible. The parliamentary system used by most European democracies ensures that the executive and legislature are controlled by the same party or coalition. Conceivably, a parliament could refuse to pass a budget proposed by the prime minister, but such an action would likely trigger a new election—not a stoppage in services like national parks, tax refunds and food assistance programmes.
After shooting, Wisconsin school and church lean into Christmas message (AP) For Christians around the world, Christmas is the joyful celebration of the birth of Jesus. To affirm their beliefs—that God is present and hasn’t abandoned them—the faith community at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, is embracing its holiday traditions just days after a deadly shooting there. “When people say, ‘Where is your God?’ He is more evident now than he’s ever been to us,” the Rev. Sarah Karlen told The Associated Press. “When we say that God is with us, especially here at Christmas time—when we say, you know, Emmanuel ‘God with us,’ that he came to Earth to be with us—I know beyond a shadow of a doubt each and every one of us here at City Church would say that in a very new way,” Karlen added. Barbara Wiers said faith is helping teachers, students and families make peace with the possibility they will never have complete answers. “There may never be sense made out of this senseless tragedy. But. God, right? God understands, and God was there, and God is still here,” said Wiers, the school’s director for elementary education and communications. “Ultimately, it’s not about man’s judgment, although there’s going to be all of that—because of the legal system and how that plays out. But God’s just judgment will reign. And we trust him for that.”
Why It’s Hard to Control What Gets Taught in Public Schools (NYT) Oklahoma and Texas are among more than 20 states that have passed laws since 2021 seeking to control how race, gender and American history are discussed in schools. But many teachers say those efforts have little influence on how they run their classrooms. “I do business as usual,” said Derek Collins, a middle and high school social studies teacher in Roff, Okla. Over the last four years, there has been a nationwide burst of political activity seeking to transform the curriculum in public schools. Politicians on both the left and the right have sought to change or limit what teachers can do inside classrooms. Teachers often ignore them.
Legal vice (NYT) Marijuana and sports gambling tell a story about American politics. Twenty years ago, both were largely illegal. Now, most people can partake in them legally. Americans have embraced social libertarianism—the view that emphasizes individual freedom—in the last two decades. The Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage. States relaxed laws for carrying a concealed gun, reduced penalties for nonviolent crimes and legalized psychedelics. Libertarianism gives people the freedom to make their own choices, which works well when the choices produce few or no meaningful harms. But libertarianism also lets people make harmful choices that ripple across society. An addiction to drugs or gambling can hurt families, the economy and the health care system. Supporters of legalization often frame it as a win-win. People were gambling and smoking pot anyway, the argument goes. But the win-win argument ignores an important reality: Legalization of a behavior often makes it, and its harms, more common. Before, most people had to find informal, typically illegal channels to gamble in their state. Now people can gamble on an app. Similarly, in the past, marijuana users needed a dealer. Now they just need Yelp. As more people have bet on sports, their savings have declined and the risk of bankruptcy has risen, studies have found. Marijuana legalization has caused an increase in reported health problems. More people say that they’ve become addicted. Some have reported psychosis and a condition known as cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome, which can cause debilitating nausea and vomiting. As more people partake more frequently of these vices, more problems arise.
Thousands greet the winter solstice at Stonehenge (AP) Thousands of tourists, pagans, druids and people simply yearning for the promise of spring marked the dawn of the shortest day of the year at the ancient Stonehenge monument on Saturday. Revelers cheered and beat drums as the sun rose at 8:09 a.m. over the giant standing stones on the winter solstice—the shortest day and the longest night in the Northern Hemisphere. No one could see the sun through the low winter cloud, but that did not deter a flurry of drumming, chanting and singing as dawn broke. There will be less than eight hours of daylight in England on Saturday—but after that, the days get longer until the summer solstice in June.
German Christmas market attack toll rises to 5 killed, 200 injured, minister says (GMA) At least five people, including a 9-year-old, are now known to have been killed in the vehicle-ramming attack on a Christmas market in the German city of Magdeburg on Friday, German officials said Saturday. The four other victims killed in the attack were adults, according to police. At least 200 more people were injured when a car plowed into festive market-goers in the eastern German city, around 75 miles west of the capital Berlin, according to Minister President of Saxony-Anhalt Reiner Haseloff. At least 41 of those injured in the attack are in serious condition, according to police.
Ukrainian drones strike deep into Russian territory, hundreds of miles from the front line (AP) Ukraine brought the war into the heart of Russia Saturday morning with drone attacks that local authorities said damaged residential buildings in the city of Kazan in the Tatarstan region, over 600 miles (1,000 kilometers) from the front line. The press service of Tatarstan’s governor, Rustam Minnikhanov, said that eight drones attacked the city. Six hit residential buildings, one hit an industrial facility and one was shot down over a river, the statement said. Local authorities said there were no casualties. A previous Ukrainian attack Friday on a town in Russia’s Kursk border region using U.S.-supplied missiles killed six people, including a child.
Sectarian violence in Syria has been less intense than feared since Assad’s ouster (AP) The toppling of Bashar Assad has raised tentative hopes that Syrians might live peacefully and as equals after a half century of authoritarian rule. While there have been bursts of deadly sectarian violence in the days since Assad was ousted, it’s nothing close to what was feared after nearly 14 years of civil war. Much credit for the relative calm so far is being given to the Islamic militant group that led the insurgency against Assad and is helping to rebuild the country and unite its many factions. The group—Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, or HTS—had ties to al-Qaida, but it has vowed not to discriminate against any religion or ethnicity, and it has denounced revenge killings.
Damascus reborn (Daraj/Lebanon) The Damascenes needed no more than a single day to uproot all the manifestations of the "Ba'ath" that had infiltrated every aspect of their lives. Less than two weeks after Bashar al-Assad fled, there is barely a single trace of his regime in Damascus, except in garbage collection points. The regime evaporated overnight, leaving behind only its waste. The images of the ousted president were torn, his father’s statues were smashed, and Syria's capital resumed its life despite the great uncertainty surrounding its future. Here, people are now busy living without the Ba'ath regime. There is no clear direction for their daily lives except that they will wake up tomorrow without the enormous burden that once weighed on their chests. As the Damascenes struggle with what remnants of the family’s traces they haven’t managed to eradicate, they’ve invented ways to deal with the lingering symbols through mockery. For example, the Syrian thousand-pound banknote bears Bashar al-Assad's image, so they’ve renamed this denomination "Jahsh" (donkey).
Zimbabweans keep watching their money go up in smoke (CSM) It was 10 p.m. when a frantic pounding on Modester Nyangoni’s door dragged her out of a deep sleep. That hot October day, she had been on her feet manning her stall at the largest market in Zimbabwe’s capital, a bustling maze of businesses selling everything from dried fish and gas stove accessories to hair extensions. Now, a neighbor was at her door to tell her that the market where she worked, Mbare Musika, was on fire. By the time Ms. Nyangoni reached her stall, nothing was left. The flames had torn through everything in their path, including the cash savings many traders hid with their wares in order to keep them out of Zimbabwe’s topsy-turvy banking system. Within hours, around $5 million in goods, cash, and property went up in smoke. This was not the first time that many of the traders in Mbare Musika lost their savings in an instant. In the early 2000s, a catastrophic agricultural reform program and an expensive war in Congo left Zimbabwe’s government flat broke. To fill its coffers, it decided to simply print more money, and then more again. By mid-2008, inflation hit 231,000,000%. Ms. Nyangoni remembers her late mother, also a trader, coming home at the end of her workday with big plastic bags full of nearly worthless cash. If they were lucky, the family might be able to exchange the money for a single loaf of bread. The price tag: nearly 100 billion Zimbabwean dollars (about $5). Finally, in 2009, the government stopped printing Zimbabwean dollars, and officially allowed the use of the U.S. dollar and the South African rand. But by then, most Zimbabweans had lost any savings they had. Over the next decade, the economy became, increasingly, an unregulated Wild West. People still farmed, mined, and traded—but now they did it all out of the government’s reach. Businesses went unregistered, taxes unpaid. Zimbabweans learned to keep their cash close, and bought and sold things in whatever combination of rand and U.S. dollars they happened to have on hand. By 2022, just 30% of adults in Zimbabwe were regularly using a bank account. “We no longer trust keeping money at the banks,” explains Irene Mutanga, another trader at Mbare Musika. “We are wiser now.”
The benefits of an after-meal walk (NPR) A nice, casual walk after dinner will help you digest and regulate your blood sugar, says health correspondent Maria Godoy. Walk about “the speed you might walk your dog,” she says. If you also want to boost your cardiovascular health, pick up the pace. “Research shows just two to five minutes can help regulate your blood sugar after a meal,” says Godoy. Though, she recommends walking for a bit longer if you can. “One study found that taking a 15-minute walk at a moderate pace after eating helps regulate blood sugar levels even many hours later.” Try to get outside within a half hour of putting your fork down. That’s because your body will have started breaking down your food into glucose. “You want to be moving as that glucose hits your bloodstream so your muscles can use it up right away.”

Managing Payroll For Contractors Vs. Full-Time Employees
Tumblr media
Independent contractors are self-employed individuals who offer services to businesses under a contract. Unlike full-time employees, contractors are responsible for paying their taxes, including Social Security, Medicare, and income tax. As a result, businesses do not withhold taxes for contractors. Instead, contractors receive their payment without deductions, and they must file their taxes.
One of the key advantages of hiring contractors is the flexibility they provide. Contractors often work on a project basis or for a specific time period, which makes them ideal for short-term projects or fluctuating workloads. Since contractors are not entitled to employee benefits, such as health insurance, paid leave, or retirement plans, businesses can save costs associated with benefits packages.
From a payroll management perspective, paying contractors is straightforward. Employers need to keep track of their payments and issue a Form 1099 at the end of the year, reporting how much was paid to each contractor. It is crucial to ensure that the contract clearly outlines payment terms, rates, and deadlines to avoid misunderstandings.
Full-Time Employees
Full-time employees, on the other hand, are on the company’s payroll and receive regular wages or salaries. Employers are responsible for withholding taxes from employees' wages, including federal and state income taxes, Social Security, and Medicare contributions. In addition to tax withholdings, businesses are also required to pay a portion of Social Security and Medicare taxes.
Full-time employees are typically entitled to a range of benefits, such as health insurance, paid time off (PTO), and retirement plans. Managing these benefits can add complexity to payroll processing, as businesses must track accruals for PTO, handle benefits enrollment, and manage contributions to retirement plans. Full-time employees are often paid on a regular schedule (weekly, biweekly, or monthly), and employers must ensure accurate calculations for hours worked, overtime, and any deductions related to benefits or garnishments.
Employers are also required to report wages for full-time employees to the IRS and issue Form W-2 at the end of the year. This form summarizes the total wages paid and taxes withheld, which employees use when filing their tax returns. Additionally, businesses must comply with labor laws related to overtime, minimum wage, and employee classification.
Payroll Services
For businesses managing both contractors and full-time employees, payroll services can simplify the process. A good payroll service will handle tax withholding, benefits administration, and compliance with labor laws. These services can generate the necessary tax forms (1099 for contractors and W-2 for employees), calculate employee deductions, and ensure timely payment processing. Using a payroll service helps reduce the administrative burden, minimize errors, and ensure timely and accurate filings, which is critical for compliance.
Conclusion
The key difference between managing payroll for contractors and full-time employees lies in tax responsibilities and benefits administration. Contractors are more independent, with fewer responsibilities for the business, while full-time employees require comprehensive payroll management, including tax withholdings and benefits administration. Hiring experts offering payroll services in Oklahoma City, OK can help businesses navigate these complexities efficiently, ensuring accurate payroll processing for both types of workers.

Nearly 90% of Democrat genda for the children
From the archives of Oklahoma’s great political satire writers of decades past, we bring you this classic reprint of a spoof that caused more than a little irritation to the political class on Lincoln Blvd.
OKLAHOMA CITY (OP) – According to a recent study, fully 87 percent of the Democrats’ 2004 legislation has been filed ‘for the children.”
“Children are our most precious natural resource,”
said Sen. Bill Mitchell, D-Lindsay.
“I fully believe that children are our future and we must invest in them.”
Mitchell invoked the children to bolster support for HB 1201, which modified auditing requirements for the Department of Agriculture. Democrats also cited Oklahoma youth as the reason to deregulate SBC, modify the districts of the Oklahoma Peanut Commission and allow campaign fundraising in Oklahoma County.
Republican leadership has been skeptical of the Democrats’ tactics, noting that the children probably didn’t give a damn about how much the Commissioner of Agriculture was paid.
“I mean, I guess if you’re boosting pre-school funding, I can understand,” said Sen. Fred Morgan, R-Oklahoma City. “But how is redrawing the districts of the Peanut Commission ‘an investment in Oklahoma’s young people?’”
But Democratic lawmakers disagreed. “We must protect those who cannot protect themselves,” said Rep. Jari Askins, D-Duncan. Askins said a vote against HB 1805, regarding automated external defibrillators, would be “a vote against babies, puppy dogs, flowers and sunny days.”
“We have a duty to protect Oklahoma’s youngest, and I take that obligation seriously,” said Sen. Barbara Staggs, D-Muskogee, in defense of a bill that would exempt cellular towers from the definition of “telecommunications services” for tax purposes.
“Before voting for this bill, I would ask you to please, please think of the children.”
As of press time, the children were unavailable for comment.

Cortes Law Firm Warns About Common Probate Mistakes
Cortes Law Firm, an estate planning law firm in Oklahoma City, OK, has recently published an article warning about common probate mistakes. These include the failure to correctly determine and gather all the assets, failure to determine the appropriate value of the assets, failure to pay the taxes and debts correctly, and failure to distribute the assets appropriately to the heirs and beneficiaries.
A very common error is not knowing whether the deceased person had left a valid will (died testate), or did not leave a will (died intestate). If there is a valid will, the will has to be found and then filed with the court and the appointed executor has to have the necessary qualifications. In the case where there is no will left by the deceased, the court will appoint an administrator who will be in charge of the distribution of the assets.
Another common mistake is not being able to identify all of the assets of the deceased and collect them. These are not just the physical assets such as personal property and real property, but also the investments, bank accounts, and also the insurance policies.
The next common mistake is failure to determine the correct value of the assets, especially the ones with fluctuating values like stocks and real estate. This may result in the assets being undervalued, which can have a impact on the proper distribution of the assets to the beneficiaries.
Another typical mistake is not paying the debts and taxes correctly. It is important to remember to pay not just the outstanding debts but also the taxes that are due, like income taxes and estate taxes.
Finally, there is the common mistake of not properly identifying all of the beneficiaries. This may result in the improper distribution of the assets and failure to comply with the terms of the will or state law.
Steve Cortes, founder of the Cortes Law Firm, says, “While there are some items that need to be taken care of quickly for an Oklahoma probate, our recommendation is always to take care of yourself first. The probate process is really just a civil lawsuit that gathers all of your loved one's assets, pays their legitimate debts, pays their taxes, and finally distributes any inheritance according to their estate plan. If a will does not exist, then a probate will still be required. The probate process is the same without a will, but instead of distribution according to an estate plan, inheritance will be distributed according to Oklahoma law. If at any point an inheritance is questioned and proof of family ties needs to be shown, DNA resources can be of assistance for this, as well as a qualified probate attorney.”
There are two kinds of probate in the state of Oklahoma: the summary probate and the regular probate. The summary probate procedure allows for a quicker process, but the total value of the estate should not exceed $200,000 and there is no real property to sell. The Oklahoma Legislature has recently shortened the schedule by mandating that the Combined Notice be filed with the Oklahoma probate court on the same say as the Petition for Probate. Selling a real property is not possible during the summary probate because the legal heirs are only identified at the last hearing. This means there will no one to legally sign the real estate deed for transferring the title of the property to the new owner.
The probate automatically becomes a regular probate if the summary probate is not possible. The probate attorney will first determine if there is a will and then draft an initial petition to probate. Once approved by the client, the petition will be submitted to the probate court.

Giving A Sh*t About Diapers
Name: Cor Sirais

Discussion: Wednesday at 4pm
Tumblr media
Disposable diapers are an item that many people seldom think about, but they play a necessary role for many families in keeping their babies healthy and happy. However, when families, and especially low-income families, are unable to obtain a sufficient quantity of diapers, their household stability can be disproportionately affected. Despite the necessary nature of diapers for many parents, the prices can be quite steep, and in some U.S. states, a sales tax averaging anywhere from 4-7% is added on to this already-high price (“State Issues”). With the addition of city taxes, these fees may be even larger (Davich). The large percentage of sales tax on diapers in these states can be problematic for low-income families. Since parents with young children often already have a difficult time affording diapers, the additional cost that the luxury tax creates can be detrimental to these families’ personal and financial well-being.
What is sales tax? Sales tax is a tax set by the government on the consumption of a good or service, paid by either the buyers or the sellers. In economic terminology, the buyer or seller is said to be levied for the tax. However, regardless of who is levied for a sales tax, both parties in the market share the incidence of the tax, which is the division of the tax burden created due to changes in supply or demand because of the sales tax. In the case of diaper sales tax, the consumer is levied and must pay the additional cost of the tax to the government on top of the cost of the diapers with every purchase. This additional cost will cause demand for disposable diapers to decrease and the demand curve to shift down due to the increase in the overall price of each purchase. As a result, the producers will earn a lower cost than the market equilibrium before the tax and the consumers will pay a higher cost than the previous equilibrium price. Additionally, due to these changes in cost, the quantity of diapers supplied and demanded will also decrease.
Tumblr media
The average baby goes through upwards of 200 diapers every month, which costs about $80 on average, not including tax (Meyersohn and Tappe). Currently, 29 states charge sales tax on diapers (“State Issues”), with the highest being 11% tax in some parts of Oklahoma (Adkins).  The price of these taxes can be quite steep considering the number of diapers that babies go through each day. According to the National Diaper Bank Network’s chief executive officer, Joanne Goldblum, ⅓ of American families with young children have a difficult time paying for diapers (Meyersohn and Tappe). Diapers are not covered by most government safety net programs, such as food stamps, as they are deemed “non-essential” items (Davich). In fact, the only federal aid program that parents can use to purchase diapers is Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, or TANF, which is also meant to cover a number of other essential needs, such as rent, bills, transportation, and clothing, leaving little left to buy diapers (Davich). To make matters worse, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused diaper prices to increase due to high demand for products, supply-chain issues, and high shipping costs (Meyersohn and Tappe). All of these factors contribute to families' difficulties affording disposable diapers, making this issue a compound one.
A lack of diapers can cause a multitude of different issues for families. Most low-wage families have parents who work long hours and are unable to watch their children during the day, relying on daycare programs to take care of young children. However, most daycares require parents to supply disposable diapers for the entire day, and if parents are unable to do so, then they often must miss work in order to watch over the baby, causing them to lose money that they could have used in order to buy diapers (Davich). One study done in Connecticut in 2016 found that 56% of parents who utilize childcare have been forced to skip work in order to take care of their child due to diaper shortages (Carstensen and Gunther). This problem is exacerbated for single-parent households with only one income provider, of which there were 9.5 million in America as of 2020 (Meyersohn and Tappe). Buying reusable diapers, which need to be washed thoroughly and changed just as frequently, is also not an option for many low-income families due to long working hours and daycares. Many families cannot afford to miss out on the tradeoff of no diapers or reusable diapers—the opportunity cost of providing the kind of round-the-clock childcare needed for non-disposable alternatives would be missing out on the chance to work for an income that parents rely on to be able to afford all the other costs in their lives. In addition, changing diapers less frequently can result in a variety of baby health issues such as chafing, diaper rash, yeast infections, or even staph infections (Wehrli). These risks can be not only dangerous to a baby’s health but also be costly to take care of and require parents to take further time off of work.
In an effort to make diapers more reasonably priced, some states have made diapers exempt from sales tax, such as California, Florida, and Connecticut (Adkins). Others have made allowances such as sales tax holidays, or periods where you may purchase a specific good without paying tax, such as Alabama and Ohio. The National Diaper Bank Network found that, with the money previously spent on tax, two more diapers can be bought for a baby for every 1% decrease in the diaper sales tax (“State Issues”). However, lowering or eliminating diaper sales tax is not necessarily enough, and there are also other ways to increase the accessibility of diapers. Some states distribute diaper vouchers or create diaper banks that give away diapers to those in need (“State Issues”). One study found that $4.3 million in medical expenses were saved by providing free diapers to low-income families (Carstensen and Gunther). In addition, parents who were given diapers were found to be able to complete educational programs and increase their salaries without having to worry about not having access to childcare (“State Issues”).
Disposable diapers are a basic need for many families, allowing both parents and children to live happier, healthier lives. One way to give families more equal access to diapers is by lowering or eliminating diaper sales tax. Food and medicine are already exempt from sales tax in most states, and the diaper tax has already been removed in several states, so change is definitely possible. Many states already have exemptions to sales taxes for certain items, such as lottery tickets, that are normally deemed “non-essential,” thanks largely to the work of lobbyists (Davich). On a local level, creating diaper banks is another great way to increase diaper access, while on a federal level, changing the status of diapers to “essential” under government aid programs may help many households with infants. By making disposable diapers more available and more affordable to the general public, especially as prices continue to rise, low-wage parents will be able to increase their personal and financial health, raising their children and bettering the economy along the way.

When I was a kid, there was a bus company called TNM&O (Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma) that ran buses across the southwest, with decent timetables and serving towns as small as 200 people. Before this, much of Texas and New Mexico were accessible by rail transit - Albuquerque, Gallup, Belen and Clovis all being major train hubs at some point or another. I hate the argument that "Intercity transit can't work in America, it's too spread out." But, places like New Mexico and Texas - vast and empty states - were largely populated by Intercity transit. At a certain point, you could get on a train in Paducah, TX, travel to Lubbock, Amarillo, or Dallas, then connect to the rest of the country, from a town which no longer even has a cargo rail line (though much of that right-of-way still exists, a true story in much of the USA).
Expanding amtrak, reintroducing spur lines (of which there are only a few left, like the famous Princeton Shuttle operated by New Jersey Transit), and offering tax incentives to companies (or budgets to state transit departments) to train and hire CDL drivers in modern coaches with toilets equiped could help connect many of these towns. In rural areas that surround a larger town (like those in New Mexico or Texas, cited above) services could be started with commuter frequencies. These are things we've seen done in peer countries - including the vast and empty Canada.
TNM&O got bought out by Greyhound buses some many years ago. Around 2008, many of those former TNM&O lines were cut - after many had already been cut with the acquisition of the company. From my city to a town i used to live in, some time ago it would've been possible to get a ride across the state in 4 hours, direct, and with several options per day - this is of course in the empty state of New Mexico. Now, though greyhound still serves that town marginally, it would require a bus transfer in a neighboring state and take 9-10 hours. Many other states had their version of TNM&O which could and should make a come-back in some form or another.
We already know America can function on transit and walkability, many of our small towns are STILL walkable and still have historic train stations which in the best of cases could be reopened for amtrak or state-run services, and in the marginal cases be converted to centrally located motor coach hubs. Small towns could use ADA-compliant investments in sidewalks and new streets, bike lanes, and other investments that they can't afford on their own. In the case of New Mexico, many towns are large enough to support fixed-route bus service but simply can't afford that. This is something that Biden's transit plan addresses in towns with over 100,000 people. There's no reason why we can't begin spending that money on small towns down the line. There is a rollover effect of large cities improving transit then encouraging Intercity transit which in turn creates demand for transit and infra investments in rural areas.
On this, i will also propose New Mexico as an example. The State established the "blue bus" network in Northern New Mexico, connecting communities from Santa Fe up through Taos and Rio Arriba. This is one of the most rural and poor regions of the country and includes several tribal nations. Blue Bus is free and though imperfect, is a lifeline for many who can connect with the rail runner in Santa Fe for medical appointments, university and shopping in Albuquerque. Connecticut also has Its CT Transit, and New Jersey it's NJ Transit. These are systems that can be expanded. In the case of NJ, the southern NJ rail links could be rebuilt and electrified. Blue Bus could be expanded. With gas taxes helping to create expanded services and reducing miles travelled by car, it would only lead to more service.
There's also evidence that these small town transit hubs can help induce the creation of small businesses, grocery stores and other amenities. If our goal is to help the rural folks, let's make it less needed for them to make long treks to places like Albuquerque for basic supplies. Let's make small towns nicer places to live which in turn helps keep local doctors and clinics in-place and open (another big issue). Housing grants can also help.
There's so much we can do to make the US a more kind, safe, clean and livable country, even in the wide spaces of the west and Southwest. There's just no excuse not to start making major changes. In the end, we all benefit and share in a more vibrant public common.

The Importance of Payroll Accuracy in Small Business Financial Health
Tumblr media
Payroll accuracy is crucial for the financial health of small businesses. Payroll errors, whether overpayments, underpayments, or missed tax filings, can lead to costly consequences, including fines, employee dissatisfaction, and financial mismanagement. Ensuring accurate payroll processing is not only a legal responsibility but also a key factor in maintaining the trust and morale of your workforce. Here’s why payroll accuracy matters so much for small businesses:
Compliance with Tax Regulations
Payroll accuracy is essential for maintaining compliance with federal, state, and local tax laws. Employers are responsible for withholding the correct amount of taxes from employee wages, including federal income tax, Social Security, and Medicare contributions, as well as state and local taxes. If payroll is inaccurate, businesses risk failing to meet tax obligations, which can lead to hefty fines, interest charges, and potential audits. Furthermore, filing errors can delay tax returns, affecting the business’s financial standing.
Avoiding Legal and Financial Penalties
The cost of payroll mistakes can extend beyond taxes. Small businesses may face legal action and financial penalties if they fail to comply with labor laws, such as minimum wage requirements, overtime pay, and timely wage payments. For example, underpaying employees or misclassifying them as exempt from overtime can lead to lawsuits or fines from government agencies. Maintaining accurate payroll records ensures compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and other applicable laws, protecting the business from potential legal action.
Maintaining Employee Satisfaction and Trust
Employees depend on accurate and timely payroll for their financial well-being. Mistakes, such as underpayments or delays in salary disbursements, can create frustration and distrust, leading to lower morale and higher turnover. On the other hand, consistently accurate payroll boosts employee satisfaction and loyalty, which can increase productivity and reduce the cost of hiring and training new employees. Happy, satisfied employees are more likely to stay with the company, reducing the long-term costs of recruitment and turnover.
Improved Cash Flow Management
Accurate payroll is integral to effective cash flow management. Small businesses must budget for payroll accurately to ensure that there is enough cash on hand to cover employee wages and other payroll-related expenses. Overestimating payroll costs can lead to unnecessary cash flow issues while underestimating them can result in missed payments and penalties. By maintaining payroll accuracy, businesses can forecast expenses more accurately, avoid cash flow disruptions, and keep operations running smoothly.
Better Decision-Making and Financial Planning
Accurate payroll data provides valuable insights into a business’s financial health. When payroll is managed correctly, it helps business owners track labor costs, identify trends, and make better-informed financial decisions. For example, by reviewing payroll records, a business can determine if it needs to adjust wages, bonuses, or benefits to remain competitive or control labor costs. Additionally, hiring experts offering payroll services in Oklahoma City, OK aids in budgeting and forecasting, allowing business owners to plan for future growth or potential cost-cutting measures.
Fostering Business Growth and Sustainability
For small businesses, every dollar counts, and payroll errors can have a significant impact on growth. If payroll is not accurate, small businesses may struggle to maintain financial stability and invest in necessary resources to expand. Furthermore, consistently managing payroll correctly can position the business for growth opportunities, such as securing loans or attracting investors, who often scrutinize financial records before committing to a partnership.
Conclusion
The accuracy of payroll is a cornerstone of small business financial health. By ensuring precise payroll processing, businesses comply with tax and labor laws, maintain employee trust, and optimize cash flow management. Payroll accuracy also provides valuable financial insights that support better decision-making and long-term sustainability. Small business owners who prioritize payroll accuracy can avoid costly penalties, reduce turnover, and set themselves up for future growth.

Cortes Law Firm Explains the Consequence of Not Probating Estate
Cortes Law Firm, an estate planning law firm based in Oklahoma City, OK, has recently published an article that explains the effects of not probating an estate in the state of Oklahoma. They want to emphasize that overall, the probate process can help in making sure that the assets of the deceased person will be distributed according to their wishes, and that any unpaid debts or taxes are paid to enable the heirs to get their inheritance as quickly as possible.
One consequence of not having a court-supervised probate process is not being able to find out the legal heirs of the estate of the deceased person. This may result in conflict and quarreling among the family members and other potential beneficiaries, which can make the asset distribution process a complicated and lengthy process.
Another consequence is that the creditors of the deceased person may not be notified after the death, which means they will continue to seek payment for the debts. The unwanted result of this is the assets getting unnecessarily held up in the repayment of debts, instead of being distributed to the legal heirs.
A third consequence of not going through probate is the delay in the distribution of the assets to the legal heirs because there is no legal process used for ensuring that all of the assets of the deceased are appropriately accounted for and then distributed promptly to the rightful heirs.
A fourth consequence is that in the event that the deceased person owned real property, the title of the property cannot be transferred to another person. Finally, if there are any unpaid taxes by the deceased person, these cannot be settled.
Steve Cortes from the Cortes Law Firm says, “When it comes to probating a loved one's estate, it is important to find the right Lawton probate attorney to ensure that the administration is carried out in the most efficient and effective manner. If you are an heir, you most likely have not had to experience the pain of probate settlement.”
Probate law involves the process of administering the estate of a deceased person, allowing the assets to be distributed to the legal heirs or beneficiaries. Probating is a complex and usually lengthy process. That is why getting the help of an experienced probate lawyer who is familiar with the various aspects of probate law in the state of Oklahoma. The attorney will be able to offer the best advice on what has to be done and provide the necessary assistance in ensuring that the estate will be handled according to the wishes of the deceased person.
It is important to note that the regular probate process in Oklahoma can take six to 10 months on average. Some may even take more than a year or more, especially when there is a conflict between the heirs.
One way to speed up the process is the summary probate, but this can only be used when the total assets of the deceased are less than $200,000. The summary probate can be a much better alternative if the estate is small, the heirs are in agreement, and there is no need to sell real property. To initiate the summary probate process, all heirs will have to indicate their agreement in writing before the initial Petition for Probate is filed. It should be noted that just one heir who is in disagreement will prevent the summary probate from proceeding and it will be converted to a regular probate process.
Founded in 2013 by Attorney Steve Cortes, Cortes Law Firm offers estate planning and probate services for individuals, business owners, and enterprises in Oklahoma City and surrounding areas. Steve Cortes has been offering estate planning services for a wide variety of clients for more than 22 years.
