My Thoughts Rescue Me begins very strongly with an incredibly tragic event. During that event, Thane saves Madden’s life. And then they both begin healing – from both physical and mental wounds. And to help with that, Madden moves into Thane’s home. They don’t know each other very well yet, but they’re bound to get to know each other very well from the proximity.

Madden’s had a hard life, and is a recovering addict. He’s proud of his sobriety and how far he’s come, and of the family he’s built at the tattoo shop he works at, Heathens Ink. And it’s that pride that really shines throughout the majority of his healing journey. It’s also that pride that draws him to Thane, who’s led a very dangerous life as a marine and firefighter.

Even as their relationship begins to build, Madden has a metric fuck tonne of trauma he has yet to work through. I’m no stranger to PTSD. I’ve had PTSD for the better part of 20 years. And watching Madden struggle to come to terms with the fact that he would benefit from therapy breaks my heart. The stigma surrounding mental illness is still so real, and though Madden has a very good reason to be wary of therapists and psychologists, it just adds a whole other layer to his trauma.

But Madden makes it through – after a very serious setback. He makes it through, and he works on what he needs for himself to live the life he wants – happily and healthily. Madden has an incredible support network between Thane and his Heathens Ink family. And he learns to set boundaries for himself while also focusing on working through his roadblocks in the course of his PTSD management and recovery.

My heart went out to Madden in so many ways in this book. I saw a bit of my own recovery through Madden’s, and I couldn’t help but become extremely emotionally attached to his character for that reason. But overall, I loved this story. I love all of the Heathens Ink family, and I’m so excited to dive into more.

-He's gay and transgender. He takes a lot of pride in his own culture. He has a small nazar attached to his dogtags. Deniz also refers to his loved ones with Turkish words of endearment (canım, aşkım, güzelim).

-Deniz started crushing on Kaidan during their hunt for Saren. He kept his feelings to himself until they met again on Horizon, two years later. It's not until the Cerberus coup do they actually get together.

-He has a biotic son, Roşan, who's 9 by the time ME3 rolls around.

-It's very clear that he and Roş are a package deal. You can't have one without the other. However, Deniz struggles with this as he wants to keep Roş away from the dangers that come with saving the galaxy.

-Kaidan is well aware of Deniz and his son's strong bond. He sent Roşan and his uncle photos and stories about Deniz after the SR1 was destroyed. Kaidan is fully prepared to accept the responsibility of taking Roş in as his own.

-Roşan had been staying with Deniz's older brother and his brother's wife while he was under house arrest. Deniz doesn't discover his son and brother are even alive until after the Cerberus coup. His sister-in-law didn't make it that far.

-Around this time, he also finds out that Roşan's biological father died on Earth. They were still on good terms despite not being together anymore. Telling Roşan almost brings Deniz to tears.

-Deniz struggles to communicate his feelings well. He very rarely cries and wishes he could be more open with his emotions.

-He's a biotic renegade, but he's not unreasonable. He is always kind to his friends and family.

-After the war, Deniz finally grows his hair out. He's kept it short ever since he started transitioning, but decides to grow it as a "fuck you" to his dysphoria.

-He also takes a lot of pride in the scars on his chest. Deniz was thankful to Miranda who kept them while he was being reconstructed.

-Kaidan helps with the dysphoria, sometimes without even meaning to. He wears Deniz's hoodies from time to time, and Deniz finds comfort in his familiar scent.

-Deniz and Kaidan have a very open, communicative relationship. Though emotionally constipated, Deniz is receptive to the emotions of others. He takes accountability for being with Cerberus and apologises. He makes sure Kaidan knows his feelings towards Cerberus are completely valid.

-They get married after the war. The legal stuff is kept short and sweet, but the party is spectacular. There's dancing, Turkish food and music, and they have all their friends and family with them.

-All of Deniz's friends absolutely dote on Roşan. Liara teaches him how to improve his biotics all while lifting him into the air. Garrus looks after him and they go about the Citadel, exploring the shops. Auntie Tali gifts Roş his first drone. He often has playdates with Wrex's first son, Mordin.

-Jack takes him for a round in the Armax Arsenal Arena, then promises to give him a tattoo at some point. No one thought Zaeed would return from his retirement, but he shows up to Roşan's 13th with a present in hand. Samara tells him stories about her time as an asari maiden. Jacob takes Roş to the arcade and wins him every prize in the damn place. Kasumi gifts him artwork. It's probably not stolen. Grunt and Roşan bond over their love of dinosaurs. Miranda volunteers to look after him some days.

-James regularly gives him piggybacks or uses him as a weight whilst working out. Javik and Roşan star in an episode of Blasto. Samantha teaches him chess and is pleasantly surprised when she is beaten. Steve takes him for a ride in the Kodiak across the Silversun Strip. EDI quizzes Roş on his favourite stones and commissions a bracelet made of them. Uncle Joker lets him co-pilot the Normandy.

-Mordin would have loved to sing to Roşan. 'Scientist Salarian' is a classic, but Roş would also enjoy 'Krogan Queen'. Legion would play Galaxy of Fantasy with him. her fondest memories were composed of moments heavy with cigarette smoke, bright purple nail-polish, the scent of burning sage and the beatles. her parents were big on that whole aesthetic, and phi loved everything about it. she remembers sitting on her father’s lap as her mother danced in the middle of their living room to “yellow submarine”, skirts swooshing against her legs, smile bright and wide against the candlelight. her father would wrap his fully tattooed arms around her and laugh full and loud and she would feel safe. she would feel loved. she would feel happy. that was home.

her parents were good people with bad habits, that was how she liked to describe them.

“keep the car door locked, phi. open it only when you see us.” her mother would tell her, hands on both sides of her face as her father jimmied the lock off the door of a particularly large house. phi would nod and smile in obedience before watching her parents tip-toe up the cobblestone pathway of other people’s homes, coming back with sacks upon sacks of shiny objects that phi wasn’t allowed to touch. then they would drive away and head home, “hey jude” playing softly on the radio.  

her parents get caught when she’s around thirteen years old. she’ll never forget the look on her father’s face as he’s forced to the ground by men with guns, her mother screaming for them not to take her daughter. “she didn’t do anything! she didn’t know anything!” it echoed in her head like a broken record, throat raw as she tried to claw her way to get to them, only to have to watch them leave her behind on the back of a squad car. that was the day her world went off kilter.

she doesn’t do well in foster care. they call her ‘the runner’ because she always manages to wiggle her way past her foster guardians to visit her parents in jail. time after time, she would find them, talk to them, beg them to take her home because she didn’t like her ‘new parents’. there was always something wrong with them. they didn’t like beatles. they took away all her healing crystals. they wouldn’t let her dye her hair. “they aren’t you…” she just wanted to go home.

she gets adopted at fourteen, and she’s almost positive the walters see her as more of a pet than a daughter. they’re blonde, just like her, and she thinks they’ve adopted her mostly because she looks good with the rest of their perfectly pristine furniture. she hates them almost immediately, but they’re definitely her ticket out of foster care, so she rides it out for a while. they take her ‘home’ and they’re probably the blandest people she’s ever met. the antithesis of her true parents. her hatred for them grows, and she doesn’t even feel bad for pocketing whatever valuable item she might find.  

by the time she’s eighteen, she saves up (steals) enough money to pay for a terrific lawyer for her parents. she hasn’t seen them as much as before, but god she’s so close to getting them out, getting them home. she’s sure they wouldn’t mind that it’s been only a few months since her last visit. they’ll forgive her. they always do. she makes her way to where they’re being held with high hopes and a warm heart. she leaves with mascara running down her cheeks and trembling legs, escorted by more than a few police officers, reminiscent of the day they took her parents away from her.

she runs away not too long after. she has more than enough money to get her by for a few more months, but by the time she gets to louisiana, she only has enough money to pay rent for another two. she pokes her nose into a couple of job openings, attempts to waitress for a bit (she ends up being fired on account of burning some customers with spilled coffee) and tries her hand at retail (she gets caught stealing a few earrings), before finally making her way to the front desk of an auto-shop that may grows to be her saving grace.

her fondest memories were still heavy with cigarette smoke, and painted nails (her own, long and noisy against counter tops). they let her play the beatles and they don’t take away her sage, and things… things are good. now though, there’s the sound of loud motorcycles revving and the nose-wrinkling scent of wax. there’s nights spent guarding the door and the clinking of glasses swimming with whiskey… and it was home… it was now her home.

( + ) eccentric - if there was one thing her parents have ingrained in her system, it was that individuality should be a pillar trait in one’s psyche. be colorful, be loud, be you. go against the grain and make sure people knew who you were while you did it. phi was more than happy to comply, of course. from her fashion, to her mannerisms, to her beliefs, there was not an inch of conformity to be found if she could help it. she enjoyed bright colors and long nails, ostentatious outfits and odd knick-knacks. also, prepare to be blessed with sage when you enter the auto-shop, she has a few rolls hidden under her plants.

( + ) charming - she flourishes at the front desk for a reason. she’s a tad bit of a talker, but surprisingly not the obnoxious kind. when you’re in foster care, you tend to meet a lot of people, take notice of their ticks and understand how to read them. because of this, she adapts herself to each person, tickling every nerve for easy charming. when asked how she does it so effortlessly, she jokes that she’s cast a spell on the free mints she gives them.

( + ) cunning - you don’t get away with stealing from your adoptive family for two years without having a little meat up in that old noggin. phi lacked many things. she wasn’t the strongest, wasn’t the best at school, wasn’t the prettiest, but if there was one thing she knew how to do, it was slither her way through situations in a very machiavellian fashion. be wary of her smile, for it holds more than mirth on many occasions.

( - ) reckless - despite her skill in evading trouble, she does little to avoid it altogether. she’s more than reckless with her decisions. she enjoys to steal when upset with someone, and she does so without thinking of the consequences. her decisions are made almost purely out of emotion and she sees no reason to change that part of herself. it gets her into more trouble than you would think, and sometimes her smile won’t get her out of it.

Avanda's would say 'at your service, m'lady' which would really annoy her. As a princess, everyone introduces themselves like that, so that's no help to her.

Ewan's would then probably be 'Oh please don't call me that, and I'm perfectly capable of taking care of myself.' He serves Avanda's family for years, and as a guard fits into the 'silent guardian' for a very long time. He works with her for years, but doesnt actually speak to her for a very long time. He knows that it will be her to say those words to him though.

Nyar's would say 'Yes Captain' He's honestly more excited to find that he'll be promoted to Captain than he is about finding his soulmate.

Carina's would be something kind, 'I believe you.'

Thane's would be "Shakespeare? Really?" So he tries to only quote Shakespeare to the people that he thinks could be the one. This just means that he quotes Shakespeare to anyone and everyone he finds attractive.

Caelum: ' Are you alright?'

Jalev: 'Yeah, yeah I think so.'

Jadè: 'Viva la revolution'

14. What is their favorite food? How often do they get to eat it?

Rhea Thane’s Jambalaya. Don’t even suggest they get jambalaya from anywhere but his mother.  He’s currently trying to get her to write down the recipe so he can make it all the fucking time. 

29. How would they describe their own personality?

He’d describe himself as personable. He’s got a good memory for faces and names and uses it to his advantage when he’s walking around town and runs into some clients of the shop. Jer is known to stop and chat with old ladies in the grocery aisle, to make sure that they recognize his face and know him as being kind and friendly, so when they think of the club they think of that over whatever the ATF wants them to believe.  

41. What does their laugh sound like? Do they snort when they laugh? How often do they laugh?

Jer’s laugh is a mix between a belly laugh and a chuckle. It makes his shoulders shake and he throws his head back when somethings really funny. But it’s more of a higher, coming from the throat, sound than a deep one. He laughs all the time.

63. What is always guaranteed to make them smile?

Jer’s a pretty happy guy in general, but some specific things that make him smile every time: his baby literally doing anything, the Saints winning, a club job getting done right, a car doing what Jeremiah needs it to do the first time, diving into the lake for the first time of a season.
