Gwangju Ch Q1: Tatsuma Ito [PR] def. Edan Leshem [5] 6-1, 6-4 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP/WTA Joint App
T. Ito completely controlled the flow from the start. It was almost flawless in the first set, and while the turnaround was almost possible in the second set, it was not the case in this match.
Leshem might have scored 2 aces, but even if both players double-faulted twice, the follow-up accuracy were not there, either. Although Leshem landed 62% of his first serves in, T. Ito won 67% of his points from his first serves, while the second serves remained more vulnerable for Leshem as he won 18% lesser points from there. Besides, T. Ito looked clutch by saving 92% of his break points from there, preventing the likely turnaround possible.
However, return game-wise, Leshem’s balance was off in the first set with the error sprees. The vulnerability of his second serves opened the path for T. Ito to take control from there, winning 70% of his return points from Leshem’s second serves as a result. Furthermore, Leshem had his chances, especially in the second set, but just like last week’s second qualifying round, the error sprees raised the question of the conversion rate as he could only break once. On the other hand, T. Ito managed to convert 50% of his break points even if he had 4 less chances.
In the next round, T. Ito will face Peter Gojowczyk, who defeated Shinji Hazawa 6-1, 6-3. Since both of them need runs to get their groove back, this would be interesting to check how it turns out, especially since T. Ito also had a Challenger first-round run just a week ago. Who knows, this could open the way for a comeback.

Made one for Shinsuke while I'm. Emotional about the Silver Soul Arc
There have Always been hints of Shinsuke being more sensitive and sentimental than he lets on, and implications of him being a very kind and indulgent leader. The fact that he remembers the name and family life of a soldier of his, executed by the bakufu ten years ago. The implication that his soldiers trusted and loved him enough to confide in him. The fact that he would never cast away Kiheitai's name.
He kept Shoyou's book and he calls Katsura by Zura and he tells Matako not to follow him cuz he's going down a suicidal path, but he saves her without hesitation when it's suggested that being seen with him has implicated her.
When Bansai comments on Ito and say that the Kiheitai does Not take kindly to traitors, and that people who betray trust and abandon their companions cannot win their follower's hearts, he's talking about more than Ito. The Kiheitai values bonds and sentiments because Shinsuke as its leader values these things. Gintama has many leaders: Gintoki, Katsura, Kondo, Tatsuma, Shigeshige and more. All of them were able to win people over, and gather their forces, because they are kind and just leaders, and Shinsuke is no exception.
It's so rare for Shinsuke to express his tenderness through words, so when he finally says, as he's lost Bansai and his own life is on countdown, that he's been living a dream all along because the Kiheitai is with him...
...Well, it's kinda hard to not love him.

📸 ATP Challenger Livestream (via website)
Back in Gwangju…
Woken up too late might be a way to describe it, but even the chance was not taken for several reason. Initially, Leshem had an equalizer forehand passing shot to 3-2* 30-30 before T. Ito held his service game to 3-3, showing the probability that he might have added more pace to his shots. However, when being under pressure, this was something else.
T. Ito broke to 4-3 at the expense of Leshem’s backhand rush, but it was not possible without his latest break point, which was a working forehand pass. Initially, after holding his service game to 5-3, T. Ito had a match point, which was saved because of Leshem’s unreturned serve. Only a game later, T. Ito had the opportunity to serve for the match, where he did even if he had to face several break points before. To note, his latest match point at that game was converted thanks to his forehand winner, implying he still had the aggression and service game consistency to prevent the possible turnaround.

Prajnesh Gunneswaran looks to move past injuries in Olympic year - tennis
Tumblr media
Prajnesh Gunneswaran had a great start to the year 2019. He qualified for the Australian Open in January and followed up with a qualification at the Indian Wells in March, where he defeated the likes of Benoit Paire in the 2nd round and world no. 18 at the time, Nikoloz Basilashvil in the third round. He later qualified for the Miami Open in the same month. Gunneswaran managed to qualify for all the four Grand Slams in the same year, and rose to his career best ATP Rankings of 75.Speaking in an exclusive telephonic chat with Hindustan Times on the sidelines of Tata Open, Gunneswaran said: “2019 was a pretty good year. I did a lot of firsts. I attained my career best rankings. But the year did not end well as I would have liked.”Injuries hampered Gunneswaran’s momentum in the latter half of 2019. In November, the Indian tennis player lost his father S. G. Prabhakaran, just three weeks before he was supposed to get married. “I had some bad results towards the second half of the year. I suffered some injuries. Some unfortunate personal things at the end of the year also affected my performance,” the 30-year-old said. The Chennai tennis star suffered a shoulder injury in the summer, which was followed by wrist injuries towards the end of the year. Addressing the same, Gunneswaran said: “Well, I was injured throughout the summer. I had shoulder issues for a few months. And then wrist injury at the end of the year... so it obviously affected me. I couldn’t do as well as I would have liked,” he said.In the highly billed US Open first round clash against the rising star Daniil Medvedev, Prajnesh also twisted his ankle and bowed out after losing in straight sets. Speaking on the same, he said: “That’s just unfortunate (fall against Medvedev). It happens sometimes, you trip, you fall. You try to do something, and you just switch on in one match, one week, or two weeks. It wasn’t an injury as such. But it was unfortunate that it happened in that match.”Prajnesh, though, admitted that he had little idea how to challenge Medvedev even if he was not injured, since the Russian was in supreme form. “But Medvedev was on fire at the time. I am not sure what could I have done. But it could have been nice for me to see how far can I go playing at that level.”Before entering the Australian Open tournament this year, Prajnesh was still not fully fit. “No, I was not fully fit going into the Australian Open this year. I had tendonitis in my wrist which affected my forehand and I was also having trouble on my serves,” he said. He crashed out of the tournament after a first round defeat at the hands of Japanese wildcard entrant Tatsuma Ito. In case he would have won the match, an encounter against Novak Djokovic was on the cards in the second round. “I was not focused on the potential Djokovic clash. I was focused on my first round opponent to be honest.”Now, with the start of the new year, Prajnesh is hopeful he will find his rhythm back. “I am almost okay. My wrist troubles are almost sorted and shoulder is doing better as well. I am hoping to perform better in the Tata Open tournament in Pune,” he said. “I still have my tennis, I still believe I have the game to go further than I did last year. So I look forward to try to make that happen.” 2020 is an Olympic year, and Prajnesh, who is currently placed at 123 in ATP Rankings, has a tough road ahead for him in case he is looking to qualify for Tokyo. Speaking on Olympics aspirations, the tennis player said: “It really depends on the next couple of months, whether I will eye Tokyo Olympics. It is of course, a target. But I have to see how the next few tournaments go to make up my mind on it,” he said. Read the full article
