Also, Korekiyo's a lad in the Sleeping Beauty au. He actually knows Shuichi's uncle and meet Rantaro once during his travels. He actually does join the group for a short while by escorting them in a dangerous area he's more familiar with. He's also the definition of don't judge a book by it's cover. As the group almost fell for some sweet motherly looking woman that happens to be witch in disguise and tries to keep them in her place as her next meal. Kiyo saves the day.

!!!! That could be exactly the chapter where Korekiyo joins the group! I’d figure that he’d be a magical user, maybe a dark mage, who’s knowledgeable on all sorts of witch’s spells and black magic. Yet, he doesn’t practice black magic himself and focuses on dark magic instead. It’s still a bit scary, as Kaito notes while observing a thick dark magical aura surround Korekiyo as he does his magical incantations. And Kiyo seems find of a skull and bone-laced cauldron in his home village. He uses it frequently to experiment with potions, medicines, talismans, and sealing magic. As he traveled quite often in his youth with his older sister (who was his primary teacher), he quickly developed an interest in the history and applications of magic and how it ties to community living, both past and present. Of course, when his sister dies, he is driven kinda mad with grief for a little while and secretly researches necromancy (which freaks Kaito out the most lol) to bring her back from the dead.

I’m not sure how he would know Shuichi’s Uncle, unless he was a student of magic within the Saihara kingdom and was exceptional enough to speak with the king himself. …Or if Uncle Saihara was going back to his roots as a youth and snuck out of the castle at night just to relief the taste of freedom he once had, if only for a moment, before returning to his strict regime as a ruler. Nevertheless, it happens after Kiyo’s sister died, and Uncle can clearly see the grief within Kiyo and tries to talk him out of the dangerous art of necromancy. Like black magic, necromancy was seen as taboo and a sin within the eyes of their god, so it was forbidden to practice. He seemed to have reached Kiyo and influenced him to stay away from this forbidden art for a little while before Kiyo turned his attention towards magical talismans that could reconnect with the wandering souls of the dead simply so that he could speak with his sister once more. (for the record, he has a healthy relationship with his sister in this au and not…whatever it was the canon thought was ok to present)

So he spends much of his time visiting places that are significant in the history of magic, in both the Saihara and Akamatsu kingdoms as well as beyond, and studies magical talismans and artifacts. Years of this research and speaking with the locals of remote villages have made him aware of the existence of demons who prey upon mortals usually with trickery. These demons also use their own magic to disguise themselves as ordinary humans which is normally undetected…until the demon reveals it’s true form and strikes, killing the victim. When Kaede and the group arrives at Kiyo’s home village, they too are led astray by a gentle looking woman wanting to offer their tired and troubled group some warm hospitality (especially if this village is in the middle of a terribly snowy and cold winter). But Kiyo knows much better. He had sensed something was…different in the air, and thinking it was the lamenting soul of his sister, he goes to his special magical board to truly confirm if she is nearby. What he finds is something entirely different. So he consults tarot cards also to confirm the source of this ominous energy he’s feelings that makes the hair on his skin stand upright. The cards say the same as the board. There was an opportunistic demon nearby, the very ones he had learned about from nearly lost magical tribes. So he gathered one or two of his favorite tomes, a talisman, and an elixir before rushing outdoors towards the source of the energy. The demon seemed to be nearby and ready to strike something so he readies himself for a fight.

Kiyo had reached Kaede’s group first, joining as a guide to his home village and extending a warm welcome to Princess Akamatsu and friends. When they meet the gentle looking woman, Kiyo had his suspicions but kept quiet and courteous throughout the affair, silently watching the woman and waiting for the right time to strike. Before she could reveal herself and attack the group, Kiyo had laced her meal with pink salt–a natural demon repellent–which forced her into her true demonic form, broke the spell she had cast on herself, and enraged her to fight and try to kill Kaede and her group. During the battle, Kiyo turns out to be pretty useful with a Nosferatu tome, dealing damage against the demon and her subordinates while simultaneously healing himself. As a dark mage, his defense and resistance stats are pretty high, making him hard to kill, but his speed is pretty low so he probably won’t be doubling enemy units. He also comes with an elixir which can completely restore the HP of a unit if they drink it. After the battle, Kiyo joins Kaede’s group to provide assistance in tracking down the witch Tsumugi with the knowledge and skills he had learned over the years.
