The Good Boss (2022, dir. Fernando León de Aranoa) - review by Rookie-Critic
The Good Boss was a hilarious satire on the fucked up power dynamics of the workplace. Javier Bardem shines as he most always does as Julio Blanco, the CEO of a scale manufacturer that presents himself, as the name of the film suggests, as a "good boss." You quickly realize though the he is anything but good, and is willing to manipulate anyone and everyone, whether an employee, an intern, or just someone in his general sphere of influence, to get what he wants. There's a lot of masking horrible deeds with humor here, by design, of course, and I think that works in the film's favor. We all know corporate bosses and those in power over others in the workplace are almost always looking out for themselves and themselves only, and that the employees are just pawns for them to meet their own ends. Who here hasn't heard the classic "we're a family" line from their superiors?
If this film had attempted to play the satire a little closer to the chest, with a stronger emphasis on drama over comedy, I feel like the message wouldn't have been as effective. Who wants to be depressed by the corporate greed movie? We all feel that every Monday-Friday anyway. What we really want, and what this film provides and is the anchor of why I feel it works, is to be able to laugh at the boss as his hole keeps getting dug deeper and deeper and the façade becomes harder and harder to maintain. To see the ridiculousness of the ploy of making workers think their superior actually cares for them as more than just an extension of their reputation and profits get pushed to its absolute limit. All culminating in a final scene that manages to end on a joke without sacrificing its message.
There are many other things that this film does well, chief among them is introduce the world to Almudena Amor, who plays Liliana, an intern that Blanco has his eye on, but that may have a few tricks up her sleeve. I could go into much more detail about all the other little things that I noticed and liked about the film, but ultimately I feel this is one that should be experienced by anyone who has ever worked. Period. Which is to say everyone over the age of 18 and probably a ton of people younger than that, as well.
Score: 9/10

The Good Boss
The Good Boss [trailer]
Awaiting a visit by a committee that could give his company an award for excellence, the owner of an industrial scales manufacturing business tries to resolve any problems from his workers in enough time.
I very much enjoyed the performance of Javier Bardem. He's is almost always good, but just like with Penélope Cruz, when he speaks in his native language, it adds another layer and it feels much more natural and compelling.
