Heyo, I’m back, got sick and played too much Zelda. Also the upcoming Aphelion pages might sort of be spoilery and ruin the ending so I’m debating if I want to show them at all. I dunno.

Some super early concepts for a plane that plays a pretty important role in the plot of TankEater. I just added text and stuff to fill in space. Definitely will be changing that roundel. Will hopefully also be building up the thermo calcs for the jet in the Venusian atmosphere (if I feel like it, here’s the thing about worldbuilding that too many people forget: STOP IF YOU’RE NOT HAVING FUN!!! IF IT SUCKS HIT DA BRICKS!!! The reader knows if you’re bored and will become bored!!!).

I like how the rotating tail will kind of look birdlike, like a hawk swishing around their tail to steer, trying to lean towards a brutal metal+biological aesthetic for these guys. I like it when different groups have different aesthetics.

Also, because I forget if I’ve mentioned it, The world of TankEater is like, 100 years ahead of us with medical technology, and only about 10 years with mechanical technology. which makes things interesting since I don’t think there’s a lot of stories like that.

Bunch of rough ideas for TankEater.

Top: I am giving myself a rule that no classical mechs are allowed in TankEater to force myself to use more interesting designs, so here's the bunny bikes used by the currently-unnamed SEA allies to the North American Empire. Dex will fight them, it will be cool. They have two massive gyros each consisting of two counter rotating flywheels so they can be used to store power or balance the bike. When upright the front wheel can also be used as a gyro. The shock absorbers are linear electromagnetic motors so it's capable of jumping. They're called bunny bikes because they can hop upright and turn by either using the gryos while moving, or hopping and then using the gyros to turn. So they can get to places you would not expect a dirtbike to get to. They also have a gun (probably coilgun?) mounted on a stabilizer. Unmanned versions get bigger guns. Motors are electric and all power comes from precharging the flywheels and a small gas turbine. Need to refine the design a bit more but I like it.

Middle Left: Dex is mind controlled and stuff at the beginning of the comic so they fight the good guys originally, some will die! Here's a few. First up is tentatively named Vane. I think he was a human laborer (possibly in medical work) on Venus before they started being replaced with zombies (and since it's hard to bring that many people home suddenly it became less costly to have the human laborers "accidentally" die) which triggered the first stage of the uprising. He and several other people went "fuck it, we're dead, let's shove in as many mil-spec mods as we can and take them down with us." He has health problems now but he's as fast as Dex in some reflexes (mostly because Dex is huge and their nerve signals have further to travel). Had to get new teeth because the old ones all fell out.

Middle Right and Bottom: Maulissa is coming to TankEater! Maybe! A former zombie slave she is very strong and carries a big gun with superposed ammo. She also has cool tattoos. Something very bad happened to her face.

Top image: Multiple people have been asking about TankEater weaponry, so I sketched this out. One of the conceits of the TankEater universe is that medical technology is about 100 years ahead of us, while the rest of technology is only about 15 years ahead (and depending on the technology, may be closer or further from out own), so the guns are pretty close to our universe for the most part. In fact, this is basically a gas powered M61 Vulcan, because I don’t know a whole lot about guns so I’m just stealing real stuff. It’s on a pivot with some rotation and elevation capability (which can also lock into place during firing), and aimed with the two parasite arms, which can reload, clear jams, and fix other issues. This type of setup is much more common on Mark 1, mule and bear cyborg platforms, so this tankeater is on some sort of high-value mission.

Interestingly, Dex could never be fitted with this! Dex is a variant with an absurdly jacked immune system as they’re built to deploy germ weapons and then mop up survivors, and therefore can only be fitted with parasite extensions made from their own flesh, or extremely close relatives. They have the technology for organ transplants that will fool most immune systems, just not super hyped up ones.

Other common weapons include the lasers fitted to space-warfare specialist tankeater heads, the missiles that you’ve seen on Dex, and literally any weapon a baseline human can carry (their fingers can’t fit into the trigger guards, but their claws can).

Just a bunch of sketches. Mostly me filching a bunch of stuff from that LoZ fan project into my own thing. I've been thinking about the semi-common myth of storm celestial deities versus depths dragons and mapping it onto two competing groups terraforming a planet.

By the way, I AM working on Aphelion, I just feel like posting the final pages of this comic will spoil stuff so I'm keeping them private until done.

Top image: So the people of this small fishing town and a horror monster might have accidentally adopted each other. He is actually like a kitty in that he will invert his face into a mess of needles and then look at you with big wet eyes.

Middle Left: Sharky's mother. She is shockingly manipulative and cunning for an 300 meter long nuclear sea monster. Both of his parents kind of suck! His father was a sort of Zeus/Thor/Susanoo figure and somehow Sharky happened (his mom planned it). Anyways he's not supposed to exist! That's a dragon with blood keys to the celestial weapons network! Whoopsie!

Middle Right: A bunch of concepts for Sharky. He can't really speak now because his mouth is like that, and since he used to be basically human, he's a little blitzed out on all the new senses he has and the fact that satellites are talking to him in a language he doesn't understand. Also, I know there's a trope of where ascended people leave humanity behind and stuff, but like, if I didn't need sleep and couldn't be harmed by anything conventional, I think I'd hold peanuts in my hands and have birds eat out of them for eight hours straight. And that's kind of what he does. People leave their kids with him when out fishing because he likes the cool rocks they give him and no other monster will appear with him around. Also he has his father's sword which is a flaw in reality that always has to be at an absurdly high voltage. It's effectively a lightning bolt that never stops. He effectively acts as its sheathe because his armored skin is a strong enough shield.

Bottom: More Sharky and a character from TankEater. Potentially Dex's most dangerous foe in the first comic and thematically their opposite, a short king with weaponized disassociation that builds up a mental version of you that they use to predict your actions (remember, Dex isn't exactly a good guy at the beginning).

It is common for HCC’s to lose vision in their remaining eye, and remain effective, to the point where the eyes are removed for all Pride division siegebreakers and all future HCC versions. The easy access to both optic nerves being considered a worthwhile trade.

Using UHF allows for passive radar, using local electronics to generate the signals they navigate by, as well as 360 degree “vision” and some ability to observe through thin walls and around corners. Look, Dex has only recently learned that people frown upon cannibalism. Arguments against eating the wild cousin of a chicken are going to take more time to work.

Anyways I’ve been thinking about this ridiculous super soldier and yeah, Dex is scary. They’re a weapon. They’re weirdly intense, move in a deliberate way that pings all your “this is a predator” neurons, have 360 degree radar, and can react faster than you can think. Considering that they’ve been dangerous equipment most of their life, plus the fact that if they flinched they could tear through a person, there are probably a fair amount of safety considerations they’re loathe to give up even though they’re “free” now.

And that means they’re taking so many drugs when they’re not prepped for combat! Very powerful depressants set up to lower their reaction speeds and chill them out. In an emergency they can shunt most of their blood to their oversized liver and clear things out that way, but it’s not a pleasant experience. Maybe now they can hang out with people more, all thanks to relaxants in quantities that would kill a horse! 

So anyways Dex does dumb things like this when they’re sober.

Bunch of concepts for one of the TankEater characters. HER NAME IS NYF AND SHE’S COOL.

She was a Tawantinsuyu (AKA, the Inca empire) soldier who was captured in one of the permanent scuffles in the amazon basin involving both Tawantinsuyu, the North Emericans, and other groups. As is common, the North Emerican empire converted her with the sleepwalker cyborg system as an elite soldier, because she already had plenty of training and knew her former comrades well.

This is why the soldiers tend to shoot themselves in the head before being captured, but she was knocked unconscious soooo... yeah.

Because of the brain surgery that makes them sleepwalkers, dyslexia and other language difficulties are common in them, so “culturally” if they get freed they tend to take extremely simple names. Generally they still remember who they were but they’re really not the same. The new name helps some of them move on.

Top: She’s got a big plate in her head, for tuning the brain interface. Also metal teeth because they all got knocked out at one point. Plus a few hardpoints and the designation tattoos.

Bottom Left: First pass at cyborg armor. Did I mention she has a pair of parasitic arms on her back hardpoint?

Bottom Right: Early thoughts on parasite arms. Decided to just go with two arms with bone-lengthening surgery. These are too complex.

One of the limitations of the TankEater universe is that genetic engineering is restricted to proteins and small scale structures, and prenatal genetic engineering is a bit of a crapshoot unless it’s a well known modification that can already exist in healthy people. However, what if that weren’t the case? What if prenatal genetic engineering worked with large scale structures?

And then I realized that was basically @jayrockin‘s excellent Runaway To The Stars universe so I just made an AU where Dex is in RTTS. This is just me having fun! Nothing here means anything for RTTS!

Dex is a VERY illegal gene mod made by a company for hostile takeovers of space stations and other hardened colonies. But it was kind of a stupid idea and the entire project was raided when Dex was five, and they end up being adopted by a cetaser (a legally modded human). They get a stipend from the company, but nobody realized how much they would eat, so Dex supplements their income with MMA fighting (unlimited class). They're currently trying to get into wrestling but having trouble because A) they have a bad reputation for throwing fights if paid enough (which is true, Dex does not care about winning and just wants to be paid) and B) they're a terrible actor. Absolutely awful. Even for wrestling. Best thing they can hope for is the be the ominous heel in a big mask that never speaks.

Top: Dex gets their first ice-cream with their cetaser mommy. The adoption process sent them to a cetaser family as they’re one of the larger clades of humans (and hopefully able to deal with a 200 lb five year old) and Dex can hold their breath for long periods so can deal with their semi-aquatic lifestyle.

Bottom Left: Rough sketch of Dex as an adult. They have a lot of Thylacoleo DNA, which means a hell of a bite force and huge claw (on the outside instead of the inside of the hand though). Also osteoderms, from ground sloths, so basically embedded armor.

Bottom Right: The real reason the AU exists is that baby Dex is very cute but does not exist in TankEater because they were a normal human up to the age of almost 12. Anyways Dex likes anything shiny and frilly so here’s a cute dress on them.

Top: Some freed Pilots/Computational cyborgs. They’re ridiculous. They don’t have eyes because that’s the easiest set of big-bandwidth nerves to attach interfaces too. Left guy was an aircraft pilot who thinks he’s Maverick (he flew a fighter jet... once, everything else was transports). And right girl was an EWACs operator. They are free now and annoy people.

Bottom Left: Dex Necks (Nex). Turns out Dex has a seal neck. Very squishable.

Bottom Middle: To continue with the theme of “people as militarized machines” There are different models and variants of Heavy Combat Cyborgs. The one shown here.is the Pride version, modified for vacuum combat. She got most of her face removed and that was the plan for all future Heavy Combat Cyborgs, but it was tested on Pride first. I’m still refining her... she has problems though. Plus a Dex face as I hone in on what they look like.

Bottom Right: Dex collects knives. Dex also doesn’t know anything about knives because Dex is a blunt force trauma machine and their own “knife” is effectively a can opener. This means Dex ends up with not-exactly-effective stuff with flashy gew-gaws.

Your Tank Eaters have been making me think about, among other things, a random bit of fiction from Peter Watts’ website where the US military is using “we will turn you into a cyborg killing machine” as their recruitment pitch. Obviously the non-consensual aspect is a big part of the horror of your setting but I could easily see willingly volunteering to become something like Tank Eaters for any number of reasons.

Watts is probably right! However, the Heavy Combat Cyborg (AKA TankEater) process isn't really something that anyone would stick through consensually, as it takes six years and is incredibly painful. Literally no one would remain there that long given the choice. Also even if you found someone that would? The massive amount of brain damage and recovery from it means they might not be the same person that chose it, so the military expects that the TankEater will hate them no matter what.

BUT, there are other types of combat cyborgs, and modifications you can just buy! And sometimes people choose to do that. Just not enough and for various reasons it's convenient to have a separate group of soldiers you can send into near-suicidal situations as fancy drones.

If you're willing to undergo some fairly nasty surgery (and people do in real life for many reasons) then you can be set for life in the military. Personally I'd get surgery for cool night-vision eyes! I just wouldn't want to also be forced to have wires in my brain that oxytocin me to love my commanding officer like a parent.

For one thing, the Amazon is a goldmine of biological diversity, so if you want exotic proteins to use for drugs or genetic engineering, it's one of the best places to look. There's also some weird politicking going on.

As for whatever is going on with the NEE, well, pretend that effective mind control technology existed. Pretend that the country that figured this out is a paranoid nuclear power with dwindling international support and a history of slavery. It won't be done super quickly, but after everything that happened last year, it's finally back on track. I'll post links to the finished three comics soon.

What does this mean for the Zelda stuff? Nothin'. I don't plan on making that into a comic, maybe some short stories as I try to de-rust my writing skills. I just have some sort of affliction where I need to be procrastinating on something 100% of the time. So as long as I have two projects going, I can procrastinate on one while working on the other. It's silly, but it works.

What happened to TankEater? Dex beloved, where are you? Originally, TankEater was supposed to be three issues (about 25 pages each). Aphelion will have five issues total, and folks, that's been hard. I make these things with a lot of detail because, if I may boast a little, it looks really fuckin' cool. But it takes forever. I don't think I can do another multi-part comic for whatever comes after Aphelion. So our poor nonbinary meat horror has been shelved for the time being. I'm sorry Dex. It's not you, it's me. I'd like to do a one-shot for whatever comes after Aphelion. But it will take a while to finish Aphelion so I've got time to think on whatever that will be.
