Heyo, I’m back, got sick and played too much Zelda. Also the upcoming Aphelion pages might sort of be spoilery and ruin the ending so I’m debating if I want to show them at all. I dunno.

Some super early concepts for a plane that plays a pretty important role in the plot of TankEater. I just added text and stuff to fill in space. Definitely will be changing that roundel. Will hopefully also be building up the thermo calcs for the jet in the Venusian atmosphere (if I feel like it, here’s the thing about worldbuilding that too many people forget: STOP IF YOU’RE NOT HAVING FUN!!! IF IT SUCKS HIT DA BRICKS!!! The reader knows if you’re bored and will become bored!!!).

I like how the rotating tail will kind of look birdlike, like a hawk swishing around their tail to steer, trying to lean towards a brutal metal+biological aesthetic for these guys. I like it when different groups have different aesthetics.

Also, because I forget if I’ve mentioned it, The world of TankEater is like, 100 years ahead of us with medical technology, and only about 10 years with mechanical technology. which makes things interesting since I don’t think there’s a lot of stories like that.

What happened to TankEater? Dex beloved, where are you? Originally, TankEater was supposed to be three issues (about 25 pages each). Aphelion will have five issues total, and folks, that's been hard. I make these things with a lot of detail because, if I may boast a little, it looks really fuckin' cool. But it takes forever. I don't think I can do another multi-part comic for whatever comes after Aphelion. So our poor nonbinary meat horror has been shelved for the time being. I'm sorry Dex. It's not you, it's me. I'd like to do a one-shot for whatever comes after Aphelion. But it will take a while to finish Aphelion so I've got time to think on whatever that will be.

I've temporarily placed TankEater worldbuilding on hiatus as I reformat it and finish Aphelion 3.0 (I am not capable of two thought-intensive worlds at once, I sure can do a silly low-brainpower Zelda thing for funsies though)

Also I probably will rename TankEater, the tank in the second act is gone. I can't name a thing TankEater if Dex doesn't bite a tank. "Cyborg Chimp Puncher" doesn't have quite the same ring to it though.

Anyways I’ve been thinking about this ridiculous super soldier and yeah, Dex is scary. They’re a weapon. They’re weirdly intense, move in a deliberate way that pings all your “this is a predator” neurons, have 360 degree radar, and can react faster than you can think. Considering that they’ve been dangerous equipment most of their life, plus the fact that if they flinched they could tear through a person, there are probably a fair amount of safety considerations they’re loathe to give up even though they’re “free” now.

And that means they’re taking so many drugs when they’re not prepped for combat! Very powerful depressants set up to lower their reaction speeds and chill them out. In an emergency they can shunt most of their blood to their oversized liver and clear things out that way, but it’s not a pleasant experience. Maybe now they can hang out with people more, all thanks to relaxants in quantities that would kill a horse! 

So anyways Dex does dumb things like this when they’re sober.

More work with Tank-Eater’s aesthetics. It needs to be it’s own thing and not just more Aphelion so I’m playing around with it. Maybe this will be a cover, maybe not.

Tank-Eater is an external designation similar to NATO designations like "Fulcrum" and "Fishbed" it is not used internally. Internally it’s probably something like "Mark 4 Heavy Combat Sleeper Cyborg NBC Warfare Specialization"

Tank-Eaters specialties are grouped into seven, with the following:   

1. Pride: Symbolized with a broken crown. Usually the first deployed, experts in space combat and boarding craft and stations.   

2. Envy: Symbolized by flies, these TankEaters have additional training in nuclear/biological/chemical warfare and playing groups off each other with psychological warfare. Emphasis on "If I can't have it, neither can you." That’s Dex.   

3. Wrath: Symbolized with a snake with bleeding fangs. Probably the "purest" TankEaters training mostly with artillery and weapons systems. These make up the most and are best at sheer immediate destruction.   

4. Sloth. Symbolized with broken bones. Internal security.   

5. Greed: Symbolized by a wolf with gemstone eyes. Trained in more delicate operations. Generally on the smaller side (For a TankEater).   

6. Gluttony: Symbolized by an open mouth: Destruction of infrastructure, have training as combat engineers.       

7. Lust: Symbolized with capricorn/goat/fish elements: Extreme deep in enemy territory operations and stealth.

Your Tank Eaters have been making me think about, among other things, a random bit of fiction from Peter Watts’ website where the US military is using “we will turn you into a cyborg killing machine” as their recruitment pitch. Obviously the non-consensual aspect is a big part of the horror of your setting but I could easily see willingly volunteering to become something like Tank Eaters for any number of reasons.

Watts is probably right! However, the Heavy Combat Cyborg (AKA TankEater) process isn't really something that anyone would stick through consensually, as it takes six years and is incredibly painful. Literally no one would remain there that long given the choice. Also even if you found someone that would? The massive amount of brain damage and recovery from it means they might not be the same person that chose it, so the military expects that the TankEater will hate them no matter what.

BUT, there are other types of combat cyborgs, and modifications you can just buy! And sometimes people choose to do that. Just not enough and for various reasons it's convenient to have a separate group of soldiers you can send into near-suicidal situations as fancy drones.

If you're willing to undergo some fairly nasty surgery (and people do in real life for many reasons) then you can be set for life in the military. Personally I'd get surgery for cool night-vision eyes! I just wouldn't want to also be forced to have wires in my brain that oxytocin me to love my commanding officer like a parent.

What exactly is going on with the NEE that they're fighting in the Amazon and seem to be so thoroughly unpleasant? Or is "turning POWs into lobotomized slave-super soldiers" the horrible normal amongst polities in the TankEater world?

For one thing, the Amazon is a goldmine of biological diversity, so if you want exotic proteins to use for drugs or genetic engineering, it's one of the best places to look. There's also some weird politicking going on.

As for whatever is going on with the NEE, well, pretend that effective mind control technology existed. Pretend that the country that figured this out is a paranoid nuclear power with dwindling international support and a history of slavery. Re TankEater anatomy, I def think my mind would leap to e.g heavily fucked up big cat or similar before bear, the digitigrade legs make the silhouette very un-ursine to my eye! Is there a significant history of cyborg/genemodded animals in this world that people would be familiar with, e.g attack dogs, all terrain horses etc? I know you were thinking about the wonderful Murderbot Diaries to begin with, where it's fairly well understood, if not universally accepted or normalised, how constructs are made and what they usually are. What's your current feeling about the public visibility, legal statuses etc of beings like Dex in your world?

Dex can and will go plantigrade (they look like they have stubby legs then lol) so depending on how people saw them I can see people speculating on either. There's probably a betting board with cyber-bear, trained liger, or weird exosuit speculations and the betters are all disappointed that Dex is a human (albeit with an induced pituitary disorder, gene mods, and lots of surgery).

As far as legal status, Dex came from a non-citizen body according to the people/thing that made them. As for the people (largely non citizens with no rights) that manage to free Dex, they're in the process of trying to separate from this control too, so all legal status is kind of up in the air. There's a lot of different feelings about Dex though because while they were under mind control, Dex killed a lot of people and is still pretty scary! Sure it wasn't their fault, but I'd be concerned with a partially active weapon system next door that killed my cousin!
