I used HelloChinese app (I still use this because it's highly addictive and good for pronunciation and sentence structure), youtube channels like Mandarin Corner, and worked through the HSK 1 and 2 textbooks. However, ultimately this has slowed me down, because I need to learn specifically Taiwanese Chinese; although people describe this as an "accent", it is an extremely distinct dialect; not only is pronunciation different but a lot of the vocabulary, plus it uses traditional characters instead of simplified, etc. So, take this into consideration........ I found my two tutors on iTalki using Taiwan as a search term! You could use "HSK" or "Beijing" or "Business Chinese" or whatever as search terms if you wanted, too!! I definitely recommend browsing a little bit to find an ideal match. Sad to say it as a language tutor myself but there are some piss takers on there! A good tutor will chat to you about your goals, then set out a long-term programme of study. I found my perfect partner on there, and we immediately switched to chatting over LINE and I deleted the app lol. Now we talk for about an hour or two once a week. I definitely recommend finding a language exchange partner somehow - if not on HelloTalk or Tandem, then search for language exchange meetups/groups in your area. - Quizlet! This helps me review the work I do with my tutors. I really like playing the matching game. - Anki! I just started using this digital flashcard app. It uses spaced repetition to help you review materials. So many people swear by it!

But honestly you don't need to use all this!!! As you can see, I'm currently taking a "throwing spaghetti at the wall" approach while trying to learn as much as I can in a short space of time. This is not actually that efficient!!! You can just pick one online tutor, or one course on coursera, and do a little bit of studying every day, and you'll be grand.......... The King and Queen will then visit Maritime Robotics to take a closer look at their maritime research devices, including autonomous vehicles and maritime drones. They will also speak with students and researchers of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology about maritime developments. Holland Circular Hotspot and the counterpart it inspired, Nordic Circular Hotspot, will sign a partnership agreement.

In the afternoon there will be a lunch with the mayor at Stiftsgården, the King’s official residence in Trondheim.

At the campus of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology a panel discussion will be held, centring on the North Sea as a platform for the energy transition, with a focus on hydrogen and wind energy. Representatives of Dutch and Norwegian companies and researchers will interact with students. The King and Queen will attend part of the discussion and look at students’ research on new sustainable energy forms.

The state visit will conclude with a visit to Nidaros Cathedral, built in the 11th century as a memorial to King Olav II. It is here that Norwegian monarchs are inaugurated. The cathedral has a special altar for the Sami community. After a short guided tour, the Royal party will enjoy a performance at this altar by Sami singers.

This platform was purchased by TD Ameritrade a number of years ago and is one of the most sophisticated options trading platforms available today. You can also trade stocks and futures with them. If you are into options it is extremely worthwhile to open a small account with them so that you can use their option analyzing tools. In this area, they are well above all but the most expensive option tools out there.

TradeStation

Tradestation has been around for a long time and is well known in the industry. They offer some of the best charting software in the business. You can enter orders right from the software and they support many different order types. You can also trade futures and stocks from the same account.

LightSpeed Trading

These guys are geared toward the active semi-pro or professional trader. You can do all your trading from a single Lightspeed account whether you’re trading equities or options, trading to multiple destinations, or trading for multiple funds. Lightspeed is an introducing broker to Merrill Lynch Professional Clearing, and Wedbush Clearing and Execution.

Interactive Brokers

An excellent broker if you know what you are doing. Their customer service used to have a bad reputation but seems to improved significantly in recent years. They offer very competitive pricing and do expect you to be quite knowledgeable. They are a good choice for experienced active traders. Their commission structure allows easy scaling in and out of positions and they have an extensive set of order type choices.

Ally Invest

This broker tries to combine low commissions with good tools and customer service. There is no commission fee on U.S. listed stocks and ETFs and no ticket fee on option trades and a contract fee of just 50¢ per contract. They started out with the idea of fostering a trading community and claim focus on customer service by offering knowledgeable staff who answer the phone quickly as well as easy access to chat and quick responses to e-mails.

Fidelity

Fidelity has traditionally been more geared toward the investor than the active trader, but over the past five years or so they have also catered more to active traders. While not a direct access broker, their commissions are very competitive. They offer zero commissions on stock and ETF trades and $0.65 per contract on option trades. They also offer more robust customer service than most direct access brokers.

E*Trade

E*Trade is well known for it’s ubiquitous advertising. They have been around for a while and now offer zero commission on stocks and ETFs with $0.65 per contract on options. They claim to cater to all types of traders and have a special platform they call eTrade Pro for active traders.

Tradezero

Tradezero is an offshore broker which allows small accounts to daytrade. There is no commission on limit orders that add liquidity. They clear with Vision Clearing. They offer 6 to 1 leverage. You can read the FAQ here. They have recently opened a US branch with regular leverage and zero commissions as well. As with many brokers, you might want to use them for trade executions but use a separate charting package for your charts.

Schwab

Charles Schwab was the first of the major US full service brokers to switch over to zero commission stock and ETF trading. They charge $0.65 per option contract. They have generally offered superior customer service in tandem with low commission structures over the years and are a very reasonable choice for a broker.

Tastyworks

Tastyworks is a relatively new brokerage started by Tom Sosnoff who was instrumental in starting thinkorswim and sold it to TD Ameritrade. They offer a competitive commission structure which you can check out here. You can use a small cash account to daytrade options and start each day with your settled funds balance as your buying power for the day.

Robinhood

Robinhood is a mobile app that allows you to trade stocks, ETFs, options and crypto. A major feature is that the trades are “commission free”. It looks like they now do their own clearing. You can read about that here. There are some distinct disadvantages to trading off of a phone, but you can also use a full featured platform along with robinhood to help you analyze the market.

TradeStation

The TradeStation platform has been around for many years and originally started out as Omega Charts. For a long time they were way ahead of the competition and likely pushed the evolution of trading platforms forward. They have integrated trading into most aspects of their software, so you can easily trade from the platform which is a very good feature. If you are into backtesting and system building, they have a programming language called EasyLanguage® which allows you to build and test systems. They also provide you with an extensive historical database to facilitate backtesting.

MultiCharts

MultiCharts is a charting and trading platform with a robust set of features. The platform allows backtesting and indicator creation with EasyLanguage. As with many of the better software packages you can do market replay which allows you to practice your trading risk free. It is a very customizable package so you have a lot of flexibility to set up your workspace in a way that suits your trading style.

TC2000

The TC2000 platform has very good clean, sharp looking charting with many added features. The watch lists are also very configurable. Another favorable aspect of this package is that you can add trendlines, etc. and they will still be there the next time you go to the chart. The following is from the TC2000 website: Scan and sort through 1000’s of stocks per second. Screen from hundreds of indicator & fundamental criteria customized with your parameters and time frames. Just follow the step-by-step wizard to build your custom conditions. No programming is required, but you can optionally write condition formulas to refine your results. TC2000 helps you find the charts you are looking for in real-time.

eSignal

eSignal has been around for a long time. They are one of the more pricey packages. Their charting is quite clean looking and their data is pretty good. They used to be at the forefront of charting packages, but others have caught up to them in recent years. You can check out their promo video here

AmiBroker

Amibroker has been around for almost thirty years. It is a charting and back-testing package that is extremely powerful and fast but not especially intuitive. It’s user base is fiercely loyal, but a large percentage of them are quite code savvy. For the average user, there will probably be a steep learning curve. All that would be well and good, except for the fact that the user manual is a bit much to decipher and the tech support is done mostly by e-mail and a yahoo message group of all things! Here is the user database. I would highly recommend this software if it had more user friendly support. The pricing is very reasonable.

Trading View

Here is what Tradingview has to say about their services: Easy and intuitive for beginners, and powerful enough for advanced chartists – TradingView has all charting tools you need to share and view trading ideas. Real-time data and browser-based charts let you do your research from anywhere, since there are no installations or complex setups. Just open TradingView on any modern browser and start charting, learning and sharing trading ideas! It’s basically a community platform for sharing trading ideas and also offers real time charting capabilities.

Medved Trader

Jerry Medved is a programmer who developed and founded “QuoteTracker” years ago and eventually sold it out to TD Ameritrade. QuoteTracker was an excellent charting program that was very reasonably priced and could be had at a discount through various brokers. When Jerry sold it out to TD Ameritrade, he apparently was not able to compete with them for a set amount of time. It appears as though the non-compete is expired because he recently came out with Medved Trader. In the spirit of QuoteTracker, Medved Trader is a full featured, reasonably priced, well put together trading software package. Here is a demo of Medved Trader done by Jerry himself. You can get it for free from some brokerages including TradeKing and Tradier brokerages.

NinjaTrader

NinjaTrader’s platform is a capable charting package with numerous valuable features. You can add indicators and trade off the charts if you like. It facilitates back-testing as well. Here is the platform purchase page. You can download and try out simulated trading for free in order to get to know the platform. It can be configured to work with a number of different brokers and comes free with a NinjaTrader account if you do a certain volume of trades per month.

SierraChart

SierraChart is an excellent charting program which is compatible with a number of broker datafeeds as well as with many third party datafeeds. The price is reasonable and it is possible to trade right from the platform.

Sterling Trader Pro

A professional level platform, Sterling Trader Pro is used by prop firms, broker-dealers, and active traders. You can connect from your desktop, laptop, iPad, iPhone, or Android.

DAS Trader

DAS Trader is a high end trading platform which you can get through many brokers. It’s available on desktop, laptop, iPhone, or Android.

FinViz

These guys provide one of the best free scanners available on the net today. It’s so good, as a matter of fact, that you don’t really have to sign up for their paid service if you don’t want to. Although it seems as though they are geared toward the lower priced stocks when you look at the landing page, you can click on the screener section and set the parameters to your liking. It’s a great tool for getting quick background news and other info on stocks you are interested in. Simply click on the ticker and you’ll get a page with much of the pertinent fundamental information as well as recent news and a daily chart. For more info and intraday charts, you can subscribe for a very reasonable price.

Trade Ideas

This service is a sort of artificial intelligence trading helper. You get to program the scans according to criteria that fits your scan ideas. If you get stuck, this software has many pre-frabricated scans that you can mix and match. The scanning is very current and you will get as many alerts as you can handle provided you give it enough to look for.

Your Broker’s Stock Scanner

Don’t forget to check out your broker’s scanner. Many brokers license commercial scanning software either in whole or part. You might be surprised how close the results are to those of software you would pay a significant extra fee for. I highly recommend that you check this out first before spending extra money on a paid service.

Market Watch

MarketWatch is a subsidiary of Dow Jones and Company, the same company that owns the Wall Street Journal and Barrons. Although the news is not timely enough for active day trading, it offers a lot of useful news covering all sorts of things and can give you an overall look at what is happening in the Market. It has a lot of entertaining and fluff news as well.

CNBC

As you already probably know, CNBC is a financial news network covering current events related to the world markets. It is up to you to decide how useful the information presented here is. There is no doubt that there is a lot of “hype” on this station, but they do cover breaking events that are important to daily trading activities. You can find the pertinent info faster with subscriber news services, but a lot of people enjoy watching CNBC for entertainment purposes as well.

Bloomberg

Bloomberg.com is a business news website that covers news pertinent to the Markets as well as business in general. In some ways it is similar to CNBC but more sophisticated with less hype.

Yahoo Finance Economic Calendar

The Yahoo Economic Calendar is a good place to get the run down on what important market related announcements are coming up. If you don’t have this info elsewhere, it’s worth checking out before the market opens. They don’t update the results fast enough for active day traders, but at least you can be aware of when important reports are coming out and adjust your trading accordingly.

World Charts

Allstocks.com is a funky little website that features a lot of useful information for traders. The main page I use on this site is the world charts page which shows a time delayed read out of how the world markets are doing. It’s a quick way to get a snapshot of what occurred overnight around the globe.

Rebate trading is an equity trading style that uses ECN rebates as a primary source of profit and revenue. Most ECNs charge commissions to customers who want to have their orders filled immediately at the best prices available, but the ECNs pay commissions to buyers or sellers who “add liquidity” by placing limit orders that create “market-making” in a security. Rebate traders seek to make money from these rebates and will usually maximize their returns by trading low priced, high volume stocks. SEPHIROTH BEFORE NIBELHEIM ---> PART 1- RELATIONSHIPS 

This will most likely be a three part series expanding on what our favourite Hero was like before Nibelheim because hey, before he was a monster, he was a human. The topic for this post is his relationships with certain characters during this broad time period (Also slightly based around interactions already done on this blog so some characters may have more skewed ratings). I hope you all enjoy the read <3 (Also enjoy this meme of a pic, I call it the many forms of Sexyroth tyty)

THE TURKS- Opinions on the Group: Mild Indifference

Veld: Closeness: 6/10, Trust Level: 5/10, 

Sephiroth has a lot of respect for Veld as a leader. When he gets sent on a mission with particular Turks, his first point of contact is and always has been Veld. While he doesn’t really have that much of an opinion on the department other than they are a secretive bunch of Suits (literally), Veld has always made a lasting positive impressions through words of advice for the SOLDIER. He could tell that Veld was well trained, he put on that caring facade exceptionally but he appreciated the words of wisdom all the same. 

Tseng: Closeness: 2/10, Trust Level: 5/10 

This man was someone that Sephiroth did not have many encounters with, but he knew of him. When he would go to visit Veld for briefings if he was going on a mission with a partnered Turk, Tseng was almost always there. Exchanges were brief, merely giving each other a respectful nod before going about their business. At some point, he just assumed Tseng was Veld’s new secretary, he had no idea that Veld was grooming the man to become his successor. 

Reno: Closeness 1/10, Trust Level: 3/10 

Good old ‘Torch Head’ himself. At this rate, Sephiroth is choosing to forget Reno’s name on purpose when he is assigned a mission with him. While he finds the redhead’s opinion on him amusing, he hates the way he acts around him. He will always let Reno take charge in their missions just to spare him an argument, but when push comes to shove, Sephiroth will end up doing his own thing if Reno’s plan goes South. Mind you, if Reno was in danger the SOLDIER would still come to save him, much to his chagrin. ‘No man left behind’ mentally coming into full play there. 

Rude: Closeness: 6/10, Trust Level: 7/10 

Probably his favourite out of all of the Turks in terms of work ethic, Rude is very professional and from that; Sephiroth has formed a mutual respect for the fisticuff fighter which he hopes the knuckle sandwich provider shares. During missions, they work in tandem and are incredibly badass at what they do. Their fighting styles compliment each other perfectly and they are both quiet. They know what to do, no need to dilly dally with words. Although, Sephiroth does crack one dry joke here and there to lighten the mood. 

Cissnei/Shuriken: Closeness: 6/10, Trust Level: 6/10 

Cissnei is a unique one, while he’s never had the pleasure of going on missions with her personally, he has seen her work and it impressed him. For someone so young (at the time), Sephiroth was quite surprised that they had this martial skill. He wondered why ShinRa were employing such young people, she reminds him of his own childhood and teen years as such, they’ve formed a surprising friendship; however he has certain trust issues with her since she is a Turk, perhaps she’s putting on the gentle act much like how Veld does. He offered to train her once, but she politely declined with the comment:

 “No thanks, I’d prefer not to be humiliated by the Poster Boy of the SOLDIER programme.” Did I mention that he finds mild annoyance when people call him ‘Poster Boy’? 

As for the rest of the Turks (Legend, Martial Arts, Gun, Katana etc/), he never really had an equal share of time with them to formulate an opinion. He had been on missions with these particular people in the past but never properly formed a relationship with them. a handful of Turks is more than enough for him. 

SHINRA EXECS- Opinion on the Group: Half of them are weird, the rest are alright 

President Shinra: Closeness: 4/10, Trust Level 4/10 

When it comes to the President, Sephiroth holds his tongue a lot. While he morally dislikes the old man, he respects the conviction of his cause. His ambition. When given orders from Shinra himself, he follows them to the tee. While he does not know the truth yet, he will eventually come to kill this man. Good riddance when he does. 

Heidegger: Closeness: 8/10, Trust Level: 7/10 

Out of everyone on the board, Sephiroth finds his relationship with Heidegger to be the most fruitful. This is thanks to the Wutai War. He protected Heidegger and acted in his stead, leading the ShinRa forces on a grand conquest. Heidegger is the reason why he became a hero, a Legendary one at that. He holds this old man in high regard as both a mentor and a fatherly figure, he only wishes he wasn’t so stern on other people all the time.

Reeve Tuesti: Closeness: 5/10, Trust Level: 7/10 

 Sephiroth had first heard about Reeve when he was in his early teens, and while he’s only spoken to the man a couple of times, the Soldier believes that he has the best intentions in mind out of everyone on the board. He wishes that he was more socially inclined to speak with him but sadly, he rarely gets a chance to talk to him nor does he have that great of a motivation to approach him. If he needed someone to vent too though who wasn’t his inner circle of friends, Reeve would be a decent candidate. 

Palmer: Closeness: ?/10, Trust Level ?/10

Sephiroth has never actually spoken or done anything related with Palmer. He’s also probably another one of those people that the poor SOLDIER forgets the names off. In this case, Palmer is good old ‘Butter Fingers’. 

Scarlet: Closeness: 1/10, Trust Level: 2/10 

When Sephiroth first met Scarlet, he wouldn’t lie, she was quite the sight. But when he eventually learnt how she acted and her demeanour, his opinion on her quickly changed. He considered her as a nasty piece of work, the looks of a goddess but the attitude of a heartless wretch. He was always displeased when sharing a room with her, and conversations between them devolved into a contest of dry wit and sarcasm. What a bucket load of fun!

Professor Hojo: Closeness: 5/10, Trust Level: 2/10 

Ah yes, the best for last. Sephiroth’s pops. He always felt neglected, and always felt as if Hojo was this close to accidently killing him. Any time he asked for something, he was met with a caring smile and what he wanted but it didn’t matter when he’d have to spend most of his time inside a glass tube. The older he got, the more creeped out he felt with his father to the point where SOLDIER training became quite freeing. Even if it was hard, he didn’t want to have to stay with Hojo any longer than he needed too. Sephiroth despises Hojo. If he had a choice, he would’ve picked Gast. 

SOLDIER GANG- Opinion on the Group: Brotherhood, Loyalty, Family. 

Genesis Rhapsodos: Closeness: 10/10, Trust Level: 9/10 

Life wouldn’t be the same with a brother without a little sibling rivalry. Sephiroth sees Genesis as the older brother who always tries to beat him into shape, keep him on his toes. He couldn’t ask for a better training partner, nor a better friend. He feeds off of their competition, it what makes him strive harder to succeed. While he knows Genesis wishes he could have the title of hero, he at least is glad knowing that the huge burden on his shoulders isn’t on Genesis’ shoulders. He wants to spare one of his best friends that eternal weight. The poetry though? Maybe he could lighten up on. Sephiroth can only listen to the same verses of LOVELESS for so long before he gets bored or slaps the book out of his hands and tosses it into a river. 

Angeal Hewley: Closeness 10/10, Trust Level: 10/10

While Genesis is the brother that he possesses the rivalry with, Angeal is the brother that Sephiroth confides in the most when he’s in need of someone to speak too. There is a mutual understanding and respect between the two and Sephiroth considers their friendship to be one of the most important parts of his life, up there with his friendship with Genesis. They both ground him and remind him that they aren’t just SOLDIERS. Training with Angeal is like an honourable duel for Sephiroth, it isn’t as theatrical as with Genesis and a lot more pacey, less magic. 

Zack Fair: Closeness 9/10, Trust Level: 10/10

Sephiroth made it his business to take Angeal’s own student under his wing should he be otherwise encumbered with other things. As such, Sephiroth places a great deal of trust in Zack and wishes nothing but great success for the future hero in the making. Sephiroth sees him as someone with the potential to become even greater than he could ever be. Traits that he never really had. A true apprentice. 

Others

Aerith Gainsborough: Closeness: 9/10, Trust Level: 10/10 

They met when they were still kids, and formed a meticulous bond over what was happening between the two in Hojo’s lab. She was afraid, and so was he, but Sephiroth would put on a brave face and would often converse with her from behind the glass tubes that were their prison. When she eventuallyvanished along with her mother, Sephiroth was left distraught and quite upset. He wondered where she went, wondered why she left. He wouldn’t get his answer until later on in his life. Both had grown up, Sephiroth as a Hero and Aerith as a simple flower girl. They reformed their bond, with Sephiroth trusting her with any of his burdens. They also braid each others hair when given the chance! 

Cloud Strife: Closeness: 6/10, Trust Level: 6/10 

For the very brief time that he did get to meet Cloud, Sephiroth felt quite annoyed with the young upstart infantryman. Too much of a fanboy, saw too much of Zack in him. But he eventually warmed to the blonde as time went on. The only reason why Sephiroth allowed himself to get to know Cloud just a little bit better was because of Zack. He liked Cloud, but that didn’t last very long.

in regards to that ask about antitrust laws, and laws in general, what would you have as "laws" in an anarchic society? i dont know much about common law, is that your/a solution?

Anarchist philosophy, in practice, is a society “without rulers” (the literal definition). Many people conflate “anarchy” with “lawlessness”, and the confusion is certainly understandable. However, governance exists with or without the State and it begins with the self, extending into the home, and beyond. Many people struggle because they conflate the concept of governance with the function of a State; I had been guilty of this before I understood anarchy to mean self-governance.

We are self-governing in all of our relationships, whether it’s between a mother and child; between her and her employer; between child and teacher; buyer and supplier; disputing parties and an impartial arbiter, etc.

Mutual assent to the establishment of these relationships (and the countless others I didn’t list) is an inherently regulatory act because people set their terms, expectations, conditions, etc. before committing to them voluntarily with the exception of that between a parent and child (because who can ask you if you want to be born?)

The beauty of a free and open marketplace of ideological exchange is that people have the ability to come together and brainstorm solutions to problems that are impacting their lives. It is a far more direct and sensible approach to delegating those decision-making powers to some bureaucrat 2,000 miles away with absolutely no interest in your interests apart from saying the right combination of words to assure they are reelected for the benefit of legal and economic privileges which invariably manifest when a single, central authority has a monopoly on force and law.

Consider reading up on legal pluralism (I write about it a lot, as well). This is the notion that all people follow multiple codes, bodies of law, or moral guidelines simultaneously, even while some may conflict or overlap. Studying how various cultures throughout history have solved conflict or maintained peace can help people recognize solutions outside of the narrow confines of the State. For example, many individuals conform to social norms within the home that they would not exhibit in the workplace (and vice versa).

Anarchy isn’t the establishment of a DMV to issue you a driver’s license (that’s Statism). Anarchy is the privatization of roads, car insurance, and licensure so that the three can work in tandem to provide and maintain the infrastructure which services us as freely and efficiently as economically possible without coercion. Anarchist society, much like an economy, organizes itself without an arbitrary central authority; what works for some may not work for others. Communities are self-organized, markets are spontaneous. For instance, take this excerpt from Everyday Anarchy on dating, marriage and family:

In any reasonably free society, these activities do not fall in the realm of political coercion. No government agency chooses who you are to marry and have children with, and punishes you with jail for disobeying their rulings. Voluntarism, incentive, mutual advantage – dare we say “advertising”? – all run the free market of love, sex and marriage.

What about your career? Did a government official call you up at the end of high school and inform you that you were to become a doctor, a lawyer, a factory worker, a waiter, an actor, a programmer – or a philosopher? Of course not. You were left free to choose the career that best matched your interests, abilities and initiative.

What about your major financial decisions? Each month, does a government agent come to your house and tell you exactly how much you should save, how much you should spend, whether you can afford that new couch or old painting? Did you have to apply to the government to buy a new car, a new house, a plasma television or a toothbrush?

No, in all the areas mentioned above – love, marriage, family, career, finances – we all make our major decisions in the complete absence of direct political coercion.

When you barge into your friend’s room to ask them if you can borrow their shirt, most people close the door behind them when they leave (especially if the door was closed before you entered). It’s almost an unspoken rule to close the door behind you in such a scenario and adherence to this rule illustrates the concept I mentioned earlier: legal pluralism. This concept reflects the reality that human interaction, left to our own devices, is governed by prevailing social and cultural values and that those values are inherent to our conduct.

Besides what we consider to be “the law,” we also follow an innumerable set of unwritten rules in our day-to-day conduct. You must have noticed at this point in your life, for example, that your behavior alters between spending time among friends and spending time among family. Likewise, in the work place your demeanor shifts to conform to the standards expected of your performance in that setting. In every scenario, the penalty for breaching the terms of these unspoken norms is usually a sanction in some form or another: your parents ground you, your friends ostracize you, your boss docks your pay, etc. They do this because people respond to incentives.

Though you don’t realize it, this is anarchy in action. More examples of this are virtually limitless; the relative silence one finds in theater atmospheres is a result of a mutual, unwritten understanding between all patrons. Hi.

I've started this blog in the wee hours of the morning after a sudden inspiration struck and took root in my head. The world (at least on my side) is sleeping soundly now, and the only sounds I can hear are my jumbled thoughts from my overactive brain (presumably caffeine-stimulated, from the dalgona coffee that I made in the afternoon /just circuit breaker things/) and the punching sounds of the keys as I attempt to iron out the thoughts in my head into a coherent paragraph.

There's so many things that I have to do, there's so much happening out in the world right now (note: it's June 2020 - there's the global Black Lives Matter movement, China's proposal for a new security law for Hong Kong, the newly passed anti-terrorism bill in the Philippines, and of course, not forgetting the coronavirus pandemic that has already taken hundreds of thousands of lives to date), but amidst all the chaos in the world today, I'm craving a small space to record my mundane life and hopefully, gain motivation to regularly do something that I really like - language learning.

I'm an avid language learner - I first started my foreign language learning journey when I was 15 with Japanese, and I have been obsessed ever since. It is an amazing experience to learn a language - as your proficiency in the language increases, your understanding of intricacies in the culture increases in tandem. As I progressed with learning a language, I enjoyed being able to appreciate the subtleties, the nuances of the language and oh! that wonderful feeling when you are first able to understand a pun in your target language! That's when I feel that my effort has really paid off. Language learning is definitely not easy - it requires a lot of time and effort. While some people might be faster on the uptake, it certainly is not impossible for anyone to start picking up a foreign language.

After learning Japanese, I started picking up Korean in college by taking classes at the university. I studied for almost 3.5 years (but strictly speaking, it was slightly less than 2 years worth of lessons) and achieved TOPIK Level 6 at the end of it. Language learning also opens up a lot of opportunities - I was able to do a semester-long exchange programme at a prestigious university in South Korea (one of the best four months of my life!) and I had opportunities to meet a lot of distinguished people - diplomats, professors, just to name a few - thanks to my proficiency in the Korean language. Just a month ago, I’ve started a new challenge to learn Spanish and it’s my first time self-studying a language right from the start, so there’s gonna be a lot of trial-and-error involved to find a routine or method that works best with me. (I’m currently using Duolingo! I realised that it’s a pretty incredible resource, at least for their Spanish course) I hope to be able to record all of that in this blog and hopefully, I will get around to practising my Japanese and Korean so that I do not forget these languages.

It’s 4.20AM now and I think I should be ending this post here. I hope this little space would be a place for like-minded individuals to share our language learning progress, resources and tips! Hopefully, some of you would gain inspiration from my posts to start your own language learning journey too.

What advice would you give to an American moving to Germany? ( Not me, lol, someone at my work, I told him I would ask).

since I don’t know for how long and in what context they’re going to live here, I can’t say much about the paperwork or anything. So I’m going to say the first things that pop into my mind that you might not read in any tourist guide and then post this into a popular German tag and see if anyone wants to add anything else. But yes. A lot of paperwork. All the time. They’ll get used to that. I hope.- it helps to know a little bit of the language (especially if they move to the East or rural areas). Young people will usually know enough English to communicate but especially older people might find it a bit difficult. University students usually speak the best English, so that’s who I would turn to if I ever needed help (or just want to talk to someone in English). Deutsche Welle offers a lot of great German lessons online btw! Also even if they know German, Germans tend to speak in local dialects (personally I understand a Scottish person speaking my second language better than a Swiss person speaking my first language). If your friend doesn’t understand someone, they best ask them to speak either English or “hochdeutsch” - standard German. Some people won’t react kindly to that but usually they will make an effort, especially if you’re not a native speaker.

- Goethe. Germans will love you if you read Goethe, Schiller or Heine, but especially Goethe. 

- Especially university students and lecturers love to pepper some Latin phrases into their sentences to appear smart. Don’t punch them, even if they deserve it

- I don’t know how often they’ve been abroad for longer than a few weeks, but this is some personal advice from me: Things will go wrong. They always do in life. But if you’re alone in a foreign country it will always seem a lot worse than it would at home where you have your friends and family to fall back on. Don’t panic! Everything will work out. It’s usually only half as bad as you think it is.

- check out the bakeries.

- shops are closed on Sundays except for bakeries and petrol stations. Also they usually aren’t open 24 hours especially not in rural areas.

- pls, Lederhosen and Dirndl are Bavarian, don’t bring it up anywhere else except to make fun of them. 

- Germans…have a lot of stereotypes about Americans (usually about food, art, guns etc) so…your friend will probably be asked some pretty weird things. Just a heads-up about that.

- if they’re at the Mittelrhein, check out the castles! generally, check out castles, palaces, monasteries and churches. Huge recommendation. Germany used to consist of a lot of small countries until the late 19th century so we have a lot of castles.

-I don’t know if they want to study here, but lectures are 90 minutes long. if there’s a little “st” behind the time, it means it starts at that time exactly - 14 Uhr st = 2pm. If there’s a little “ct” it means “+15 minutes” - 14 Uhr ct = 2.15 pm. - but this is only in university contexts. Also if they study here, universities often offer Tandem partners and programmes to show foreign students around - it’s a) useful and b) a good way to meet new people.

- Also as seen above: We use the 24-hour format. They probably already know this but Germans/Europeans don’t use month/day/year and it will lead to misunderstandings

- cars have more rights than you. or me. or anyone. they will have to accept that.

- a bike is useful though

- there are a lot of groups on facebook called (city/area) Kleinanzeigen or (city/area) kaufen und verkaufen  - or something like that. That’s where your friend can probably find things like cheap furniture or a bicycle. I really recommend getting a bike.

- This one is really based on stereotypes but it’s also something that Americans told me they had a hard time with here in Germany so I’m going to say this too: We have a few American lecturers at my uni and a lot of American exchange students and quite a few told me that they struggled at first with the way Germans reacted to them. One of my lecturers even thought everyone hated her when she first came to Germany …until she won the award for being the best teacher at our institute bc…she didn’t get much of a reaction to anything she said or did at first and there was hardly any small-talk between her and her colleagues and the students didn’t really smile at her as much as she was used to and even though she was prepared for working in Germany and learnt about the different mannerisms, she didn’t expect that much of a difference. It really depends on which part of the country you go to and as I said, this one is based on stereotypes and not always true and I don’t know your friend, but since this is is something that came up a lot when talking about German-American interactions on behalf of all of us: we don’t hate you.  It’s not a sign of dislike, just a cultural difference. 

- 1 pm -3pm is Mittagsruhe (literally: noon-silence). Don’t be loud then.

- ok the nazi subject: I know the “Don’t mention the war”-rule is well and alive but it’s really not accurate. We talk a lot about that part of German history, both in serious contexts and less serious contexts and it’s not really considered a faux-pas for a foreigner to address it either. I really recommend visiting the memorials and museums that commemorate the victims of the NS-regime.
