DECEMBER DRABBLES — 6. Jessie Raymond Jr. + Tammy Ocampo 🌨️
A/N: I can’t believe we have to wait deep into January to get another season but if we don’t think about it…it’ll arrive faster than we think! ☝🏾 Anyways i have a crush on Sylvester & Gigi that’s that bi panic 🤭 and since the all american universe and bridge & tunnel series are non-existent on this site—mainly bridge and tunnel, I thought I’d take one for the team and do the writing. GIF BELONGS to: @katelliot
SN | | I’m planning to do 12 prompts of Xmas which means I have 6 more left to do but honestly—no promises! 😬
PROMPTS: #25. “My car was not made for this weather!” + #16. “Don’t slip!” + #31. Scenario: told parents about SO and now you have to rope someone into it for the holidays.
Synopsis: OC involves her ex-lover, JR into being her fake boyfriend for the holidays, along with her bestie and main-driver, Tammy uncovering the reasons why there shouldn’t be secrets.

“My car was not made for this weather!” Tammy Ocampo, Linnea’s best friend, complained as she kept a tight-grip on her fuzzy steering wheel.
She wanted to leave on time, much earlier when the sun was still out along with less traffic, to get to Linnea’s family’s house up in the mountains, which was also considered a village town. Ultimately this did not make sense to Tammy really, since she didn’t picture Linnea’s parents living in a secluded area such as Helen, Georgia but to each their own of course!
“We’re going up this mountain to save my marriage,” JR joked from the backseat, snacking on something that made Tammy roll her eyes.
She was unaware that she was taking Linnea’s old fling along for the ride as well. And she also wished her friend would have communicated this so that she could tell her that this was a bad idea.
Tammy rolled her eyes again, which JR caught in the rear view this time. He decided to close up his snack to shove back into the book bag he had beside him in the backseat. As previously stated, JR and Tammy tried to be on their best behavior towards each other since they cared about Linnea and he figured that the Latina was just pressed he was here. He was a gentleman, knew shit wasn’t for free, and knew Tammy would probably feel a way about him being here but Linnea asked him to do a favor for her so he was here. Simple as that. He offered to pay for the gas as the bare minimum—which Tammy shot down, and even pumped the gas at this sketchy station when the snow started coming down again.
The only one that seemed to have an attitude here…was Tammy.
“So…Tammy,” JR started, “how do you get along with Linnea’s parents? Anything I should be warned about as a friend looking in on the outside?”
Tammy pulled her bottom lip into her mouth as she thought about that. Sure she could make up something but she knew Linnea wouldn’t let that slide. However JR was in a much different predicament than she was. Linnea and Tammy were friends since middle school living in Lula, Georgia—a railroad town up until Linnea’s parents decided to move to Helen months after Linnea started at the HBCU in Atlanta.
“Well you’re not bonding with them as Linnea’s friend right? so your process will be different compared to mine,” Tammy responded, noticing Linnea peek over at her choice of wording.
Linnea could feel the tension in the car since the moment JR climbed into the backseat. The girl could understand Tammy’s position to a certain extent, you can’t just invite someone else when you’re not the one providing the transportation. Honestly it was a spur of the moment kind of thing, from receiving a text message from her mom late at night two days ago reminding her of her “significant other,” mind you—that didn’t exist, to reaching out to her old lover and friend? Jessie Raymond jr. To be her fake boyfriend.
Then there was Tammy who’s been around Linnea’s parents for awhile now. Although her mother and Linnea’s mother were not on the best terms before Tammy’s mom’s passed, her father still sent a Christmas card to their home every year.
This would be JR’s first time ever meeting the girl he’s been intimate with parents and this isn’t something usually that he does. He often avoided this part of the relationship because they weren’t serious and he felt it wasn’t needed. He was starting off with a lie for the sake of Linnea’s sanity yet he wasn’t expecting this to bite him in the ass later.
The relationship between Linnea and JR was a monthly subscription. From spending late night studying sessions, to showing up to nearly everyone of JR’s games and Linnea’s skating competition in return, to Linnea throwing a cartwheel on his north pole for the first time, quickly changed things—as to be expected. It was the usual friends with benefits storyline but once it started to mean something, Linnea distanced herself and that made things very confusing to JR—however he was the main one proposing that they didn’t get attached.
He had to give the girl some shit when she called him, requesting that he be her man for the holiday season in front of her parents. Since she spent time alone and away from JR, he tried not to think too much about it and focused on himself as well. It felt weird but he didn’t want to discuss it and carried on like it was nothing although everyone in the group, including Tammy noticed the shift.
This also gave JR the time to give his baby bro, the opportunity to spend a few days with their mom alone. He didn’t mind giving Damon that but would definitely be back to spend the rest of the holiday season with his family too.
“It’s sounding like you ladies might be setting me up,” JR stated, “I just want to know what I’m walking into. I already know the basics of your folks names and what they do for a living. I’m making sure I’m not blindsided when I walk through the door, that’s all.”
Tammy laughed, “this isn’t a exam. Just be natural, anyone can see if you’re genuine or not.”
JR tilted his head to the side, looking at Linnea who could feel his stare. She slightly turned to meet his eyes, sent a smile his way, followed by a thumbs up.
“What she said. You’ll be fine.”
“…are your folks expecting you to bring anyone home this holiday, Tammy?” JR asked.
Tammy inhaled as she sat up straighter in the driver’s seat, “last person I brought home to my dad, cousins, and aunties it became a mixture of threats of kidnapping him and bringing him to Colombia; to never be heard from again if he broke my heart and my aunties begging him to marry me. So I’d rather not do that or lie about my love life.”
That was a jab.
Linnea had to check if her hearing aid was turned on at that. She even peeked over at JR to make sure he heard that last bit too and he held his hands up basically telling her to check that herself, despite it being his question to Tammy.
“I’ll tell them it’s all a prank at the end of the trip so they don’t kill me while also hinting that I want them to butt out of my business.” Linnea explained, beginning to play around with the case of her phone.
Tammy shook her head, “Is it really worth lying though? I mean how long have you been telling your mom about him? Just tell them that you’re focused on school, it always works for me.”
“That’ll only get you so far.”
“We’re only nineteen!” Tammy exasperated, “it’s so frustrating between my family wanting to marry me off and yours expecting you to be in a relationship.”
Linnea folded her fluffy covered arms, “I’ve been single so long in their eyes that they’re starting to question my sexuality.”
“Wait, forreal?” JR questioned, “why?”
“Oh you know the ignorant saying: If you never talk about your interests in the opposite sex in front of them or gush about your crushes or bring anybody around, you’re immediately gay.” Linnea informed.
The car was met with silence at that until Tammy snickered.
“Well…they’re not 100% wrong.”
JR found himself tilting his head at that, “what do you mean by that?”
Tammy laughed, looking over at Linnea who gave her a playful side eye.
“You’ve never told him?”
“Told me what?” It felt like JR was watching a match right now and usually he caught on pretty quick but it didn’t feel like it when it came to Linnea Griggs.
Linnea twisted her body around, setting her back against the car door so that she could face both Tammy and JR.
“Tams and I used to date,” Linnea revealed making JR raise his brows, “from Christmas break during our junior year in high school up until the summer going into senior year. Then as soon as Mikey Diaz wanted to take her to prom instead of Stacey—whatever her last name is, Tammy dropped my ass even as her friend. We had beef for awhile.”
Tammy gasped, “that’s not true!”
“Yes it is.”
JR bursted out laughing at the two’s bickering, making Linnea question with her eyes what he found so funny. It was when Tammy’s eyes peered back at him through the rear view, he pointed in her direction, still chuckling.
“The hell are you laughing about?”
“It all makes sense,” JR said, “I finally know what Tammy’s problem with me is.”
“Problem? Oh no, we don’t have a problem.” Tammy tried to persuade.
JR gave her a look of pure disbelief which made her clear her throat and turn her attention back to the road.
“You must know about Linnea and I,” he spoke so matter of factly that it made Tammy want to slam on the breaks, so maybe the seat belt would yank on his neck a bit but decided against that—she was safe driver, “you two have history too so it’s obvious that you feel a way about me even if it isn’t intentional.”
It was Tammy’s turn to laugh as she shook her head, “you say you’re this nice guy but you really radiate cocky energy majority of the time you know that, huh?”
“No, don’t get that misconstrued baby, I’m confident.” JR flashed his white teeth at her while Tammy scoffed.
“Oh, are you? How confident are you in Linnea’s feelings about Gabby?” Tammy fired off which made Linnea reach over and whack her arm.
JR’s eyes flicked to the bundled girl. He wasn’t sure what that was supposed to mean or how Linnea even knew what was going on with him and Gabby. There wasn’t much besides flirting…yet.
“What’s wrong with gabby?” JR quizzed, sliding forward to rest his elbows against the back of the seats, “Cam told me y’all were cool…”
Linnea couldn’t help but to suck her teeth at that, making more confusion appear on the brown skinned boy’s face. Why was JR asking her god-brother about her opinion on gabby? They sat next to each other in class, borrowed pens off each other, and cackled once or twice at the professor getting on each of their nerves but there wasn’t a issue.
JR was not Linnea’s man, he made that clear.
So why did it matter what she thought about him getting involved with someone else?
Tammy bit down on her bottom lip, realizing that she probably should have kept her mouth shut but it needed to be out in the open.
Especially if they were going to play along with this little scheme Linnea came up with to get her parents to chill on her relationship status.
“It doesn’t matter,” Linnea muttered, ready to turn back around but JR reached out for her fur covered wrist.
Her round eyes met his full-length lash framed ones, “it does to me.”
Sure Linnea distanced herself from JR once she realized she was falling for him. She swore she wouldn’t let this happen but the more time she spent with the guy, made that incredibly hard. Which is why she put up the distance, although she wanted more but it was dangerous not allowing yourself to love.
Yet it seemed like JR was a pro at it.
“It’s too late,” Linnea whispered, making his brows furrow for what felt like the thousandth time tonight, just as Tammy pulled into the driveway of Linnea’s parents’ cabin.
A thick silence filled the Honda even with the heat still flowing through the vents. Tammy clapped her hands together trying to break it as they all stared out at the snow-covered cocoa powdered home, “I guess we should head in, I don’t think I’ll stay since…my dad is probably waiting for me.”
Linnea couldn’t believe Tammy and she knew it with the way she cut her brown eyes at her. Normally Tammy didn’t mean any harm and still probably didn’t but Linnea was highly annoyed with her. This break wasn’t meant to be drama filled, it was about spending time with loved ones but now Linnea just felt like going right to bed.
“You know my mom’s not going to allow you to travel out to Lula by yourself at this hour,” Linnea grumbled, shoving her hands into her gloves, “so let’s just get this over with, okay?”
She didn’t wait for a answer from either of the two, unlocking her side of the door, tossing the door open to engulf herself into the frozen air and wet snow. A slam of the door made Tammy wince, she tried to perk up and say something else to JR but he also smoothed a beanie over his ears, lifting his book bag with him before he exited into the cold too.
Carefully JR walked down the rest of the driveway, his eyes in slits as the snow whipped past his face, slightly quickening his steps to Linnea who was stepping downwards to the house.
“Don’t slip!” JR called out, his hands going around her coat covered waist as she did.
He steadied her as Linnea’s breath puffed out into the air, attempting to catch her breath as she leaned back into JR for a bit before straightening up. Rolling her shoulders Linnea whispered out a, “thanks,” before carrying on around the front patio towards the front door.
He couldn’t help but to let out a sigh as he heard the steps of Tammy stomping behind him. He stepped to the side, holding his hand out for her to walk in front of him before he followed the girls to the main entrance.
Linnea was quick unlocking the door, holding it open and waving her two guests in after her, before closing and locking the wind out behind them.
“LINNEA!” The squeakiness of mother’s voice called out from the living room on the left of the entry way.
The girl took a deep breath, tossing her hood back as the small woman entered the entry way, hands on her hips, eyes only set on her daughter.
“You’re late!”
“Sorry, mommy. We got caught out there once the wind and snow started to pick back up.” Linnea tried to explain but the woman just shushed her, placing a bright smile on her lips as she turned to Tammy; holding her arms out for the dark haired girl.
“Tammy, baby! You just missed your dad and Tia about two hours ago.” The woman pulled the girl into her arms, swaying her from side to side, “come on, get out of them jackets, get you all something to eat, and get comfortable.”
“Oh, I just came in to say hi.”
“Did you hear what I said,” The woman was stern, as she glanced over her shoulder at the long haired girl, who quickly dipped her head and swallowed, not saying anything more.
Linnea’s mother smiled some more as she turned to JR who quickly yanked his hat off and held his hand out to the woman, “Mrs. Griggs, it’s good to meet you—I’m—
“Mhm. You’re Jessie! My sweet pea’s boyfriend! Finally! Bring it on in, darling!” Mrs. Griggs yanked the taller boy into her grip, providing the same treatment to him as she did Tammy, as if she knew him for a long time.
Linnea took this time to get out of her outerwear, while he mother hugged on everybody.
“You’re so handsome,” Mrs. Griggs analyzed, making JR laugh and smile, “you did well, sweet pea. Y’all make a cute couple, you match.”
“Why thank you ma’am,” JR continued smiling as he looked over at Linnea who stared up at the ceiling, “you hear that, Linny? Your ma says we fit. I say we should believe her.”
“As you should, I’m a woman of my word!” Mrs. Griggs patted JR’s shoulders as she then turned to her daughter.
She gripped her hands, “let me get a good look at you, make sure my sweet pea is staying well-fed before your grandmomma does it tomorrow.”
Linnea knew that was coming as she did a full-spin for the woman who just hummed before cupping her face. Then she cradled Linnea into her chest for awhile, which Tammy found awfully sweet.
“I love you and I’m glad you made it home.”
“I love you too, mom.” Linnea kept her head on her mother’s chest for awhile before the woman patted her butt and pulled away.
Mrs. Griggs waved her fingers, “Come on and let’s head into the kitchen, I know y’all are hungry. And you can tell me all about the drive.”
“Demetrius! They’re here!” Mrs. Griggs called out as she entered the living room.
Tammy followed after the family friend while JR held Linnea back for a few seconds.
“Are we going to talk about us at some point?”
“It’s late. We’re all exhausted…let’s just give it a rest…lucky for you, my parents don’t care much for the PDA so this should be easy considering…” Linnea trailed off, beginning to walk by JR.
He grabbed her hand.
“Just say the words and it doesn’t have to be too late,” JR whispered, “we can—
“NEA?! Where you at baby girl?!” The booming voice of Mr. Griggs caught the pair off guard.
Right after that, a buzzing sound escaped from JR’s pocket was enough to end whatever this was. He reached into his pocket and glanced at the screen, and with the look on his face was enough for Linnea to send him a small smile because she already knew who was on the other line.
“You better get that and tell Gabby we made it.”
And with that she pulled her hand from his fingertips, learning her lesson for the night.

Sevilla: 2022-23 UEFA Europa League Champions
José Mourinho sprung a surprise with his team selection by opting to start with Paulo Dybala, despite the forward missing their previous four games with an ankle injury, and he quickly repaid the coach's faith by helping to create the first chance of the game. The Argentinian slipped in Zeki Çelik, whose low cut-back was fired at goal by Leonardo Spinazzola, drawing a parry from Yassine Bounou.
Dybala's second significant involvement proved more decisive as, in the 35th minute, he darted on to Gianluca Mancini's incisive through ball and calmly slotted his finish across Bounou. Sevilla had shown little to that point but, having come from behind to win the trophy in their last three Europa League finals, they soon looked a different proposition.
Youssef En-Nesyri's glancing effort was dealt with by Rui Patrício before a second header from the Moroccan striker skimmed the roof of the net. The Spanish side went closer still deep into first-half added time when Ivan Rakitić's raking shot cannoned back off the post.
José Luis Mendilibar made a double change at the break, introducing Suso and Erik Lamela to inject more creativity into their play against a Giallorossi outfit that had kept five clean sheets in their previous seven Europa League matches. Roma's reliable defence was soon breached though, 37-year-old Jesús Navas whipping in a right-wing cross that Mancini could only deflect into his own net under pressure from Lucas Ocampos.
Now it was Roma's turn to respond and they so nearly led again. First Bounou denied Tammy Abraham in a goalmouth scramble before Roger Ibañez sliced wide then Abraham's replacement, Andrea Belotti, also failed to hit the target from Lorenzo Pellegrini's clever free-kick. Sevilla, for all their dominance in between, could not fashion a winner inside 90 minutes either with two shots on target from their 16 attempts outlining their lack of a cutting edge.
That trend continued in extra time and though neither goalkeeper was called into action during the additional 30 minutes, penalties were almost avoided when Chris Smalling's looping header struck the bar deep into added time in the second period.
Bounou – a penalty-saving expert and Morocco's match-winner in their World Cup round of 16 triumph on penalties against Spain – lived up to his billing in the shoot-out, saving from Mancini with his legs and touching Ibañez's spot kick on to the post. Gonzalo Montiel, who scored the decisive penalty for Argentina in the World Cup final, had the last word here too, sweeping in a re-taken effort to ensure Sevilla were crowned for a record seventh time.

FIFA 20 career mode: Best teams to use – Barcelona Neymar reunion, Bolton and Lyon rebuild | Football | Sport
FIFA 20 Career Mode has been revamped, so who will you manage? (Image: EA SPORTS)
FIFA fanatics have been rewarded for years of campaigning with a new and improved Career Mode in FIFA 20.
A host of changes are set to reignite interest in the single-player discipline, including more customisable managers, game-impacting team talks and dynamic player potential changes.
FIFA have also expanded their authentic branding to include the Bundesliga, providing an immersive experience similar to their La Liga licensing and broadcast package rolled out in FIFA 19.
Ultimate Team may still be the flagship game mode but there is plenty of demand for a good old-fashioned career so here are 12 potential starting points – including clusb to rebuild from the ashes or create a dynasty at.
Ajax
Ajax caught the eye with their stunning run to the Champions League semi-finals last year, but subsequently lost two of their best players in Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie de Jong during the summer.
Replacements will need to be signed if the Eredivisie title is to be defended, but the likes of Hakim Ziyech, David Neres and Dusan Tadic mean the Dutch giants should still be a force in Europe.
Barcelona
Get Neymar, dominate Europe.
FIFA managers will look to do what Barcelona could not in real life and reunite Neymar with the deadly duo of Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.
Add summer signing Antoine Griezmann into the mix and it’s hard to not see success both domestically and in the Champions League.
Managers will undoubtedly be drawn to Barcelona (Image: GETTY)
Benfica
Benfica sold wonderkid Joao Felix during the summer while they also permanently waved goodbye to star strikers Raul Jimenez and Luka Jovic, meaning there should be plenty of cash in the bank.
Raul de Tomas has arrived from Real Madrid but there is still plenty of room for improvement at the Estadio da Luz.
Borussia Dortmund
Dortmund have been a fan favourite among FIFA players for years due to their stunning kits and squads packed full of attacking flair.
And now Mats Hummels has returned to the Signal Iduna Park while Thorgan Hazard, Julian Brandt and Nico Shulz have all joined to bolster a frightening roster containing Marco Reus and Jadon Sancho.
Borussia Dortmund have always been a favourite among FIFA fanatics (Image: GETTY)
Bolton Wanderers
There are rebuilding jobs and then there’s Bolton.
The Trotters were hours from going out of business at the start of the season but were saved from the clutches of financial ruin at the death – albeit leading to a 12-point deduction.
Calling the squad threadbare is an understatement so managers will need to be clever with free agents and loan deals. Roll your sleeves up and get stuck in.
Chelsea
Another tricky project for managers to take on is that of Chelsea, currently under a transfer ban and unable to sign players until the summer of 2020.
Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount have stepped up to the first team and the Blues are in the Champions League, offering plenty of incentive for FIFA fans to take the hotseat at Stamford Bridge.
Youngsters such as Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount are being given a chance at Chelsea (Image: GETTY)
Galatasaray
Galatasaray enjoyed a superb summer transfer window as they signed 12 players for just £4.5million, including the likes of Radamel Falcao and Steven Nzonzi.
Former Premier League stars Ryan Babel, Jean Michael Seri, Florin Andone and Mario Lemina have also moved to Istanbul so European success will be the target while the Super Lig is notoriously competitive.
Leeds United
Fallen giants such as Portsmouth and Sunderland are always tempting Career Mode selections, but now might finally be the right time to get Leeds back on the big stage.
A settled squad of players offers a good base for a promotion push while the acquisition of Eddie Nketiah on loan shows plenty of scope for development.
Is it time to take Leeds United back to the top flight? (Image: GETTY)
Lyon
Lyon a trio of star players when Tanguy Ndombele, Ferland Mendy and Nabil Fakir all departed before the start of the season.
However, there is still an impressive core of players that can challenge PSG for Ligue 1 dominance while the addition of the Stade de Lyon in FIFA 20 is an added bonus.
Sevilla
Sevilla enjoyed an incredibly busy transfer window as they overhauled their squad, selling Wissam Ben Yedder, Pablo Sarabia, Quincy Promes and Luis Muriel before replacing them with a host of new talent.
Rony Lopes, Lucas Ocampos and Munas Dabbur are just some of the 15 new arrivals who will have to gel at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium, but can such a collection challenge the might of Real Madrid and Barcelona?
Sevilla have signed a host of new players in order to compete this season (Image: GETTY)
Sheffield United
Blades fans will be able to play at Bramall Lane for the first time ever following Sheffield United’s promotion to the Premier League.
And managers will relish the chance to get to grips with overlapping centre-backs while some canny investment will mean more than just survival is on the cards.
Union Berlin
Union Berlin have just been promoted to the Bundesliga and signed an almost completely new squad to try and keep them here.
This is a long-term project, but one that should reap rewards if bosses can manage a tiny budget and mix it with the big boys of German football.

What Makes a Figurative Painting Good?
Đức Mẹ Chuối, 2018. Tammy Nguyen CRUSHCURATORIAL
Jesse Mockrin, Remedy, 2018. Courtesy of Night Gallery.
The most famous artwork in all of Western literature, the fictional portrait of Dorian Gray, imagines figurative painting to be transformative, magical, and a bit evil. Its creator, Victorian writer Oscar Wilde, dreamt up a picture in which the subject aged and grew uglier while his real-life counterpart stayed youthful and handsome. Wilde’s story follows a long tradition of superstitions regarding figurative art: some Jewish and Islamic traditions banned human representations, fearing they’d become objects of idol worship.
If figurative painting could once inspire fear and awe, the form became nearly passé as the art establishment became enamored with abstraction in the mid–20th century. While artists have never stopped creating human likenesses, critical attention and praise began promoting more conceptual work. Back in 2009, Guardian critic Jonathan Jones even wrote that “most figurative art being made in Britain today is derivative, shallow nonsense.” Yet over the past 15 years, some publications have also asserted that figuration is back and as interesting as ever.
Abduction, 2018. Jesse Mockrin Night Gallery
Though other art forms—such as abstract painting, conceptual art, and performance—have long enjoyed reputations for being more intellectual endeavors, when done well, figurative painting can be just as challenging, stimulating, and groundbreaking. To understand what makes a great figurative painting today and why contemporary artists still gravitate toward the genre, we asked a few of the painters themselves. Together, they offer a compelling case for why they’re working in today’s most vibrant aesthetic mode.
“One of the exciting reasons to paint the figure in 2019 is the expansion of whose images are being depicted and seen,” Los Angeles–based artist Jesse Mockrin recently told Artsy. “Female painters, queer painters, and painters of color are creating images of themselves and their communities…mirroring the culture’s shift towards inclusivity at large.” As increasingly diverse groups of artists enter the canon, so do the equally disparate subjects they create. Mockrin herself samples from art-historical paintings—she riffs on fragments of canvases by Jean-Honoré Fragonard, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, and John Singer Sargent, for example, and renders them in her own contemporary (female) hand. Her figures are often androgynous, alerting viewers to the fluidity of gender not just in 2019, but throughout the history of painting.
Rest, 2019. Anna Bjerger Galleri Bo Bjerggaard
Sippy Cup Girl, 2018. Haley Josephs Jack Barrett
Good figurative painting can also go beyond reinterpreting single historical artworks—it can also reference entire traditions. One of Mockrin’s favorite artists working in the genre, Kara Joslyn, pushes figuration forward by using unusual materials. With polymer car paint and airbrushing, she creates dimensionality while referencing sculpture, photography, craft and art history—all on a single canvas.
Tammy Nguyen, who lives and works in New York, also points to inclusivity as a crucial element of these works. “Figurative paintings are provoking very stimulating conversations right now, particularly those made by people of color, women, queer folks, and any people of lesser-known backgrounds,” she said.
Naomi, 1995. Marlene Dumas Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam
Nguyen herself makes paintings that reimagine mythical and art-historical characters such as the cyclops or the goddess Venus emerging from the sea. On her canvases, they become bright-yellow characters of ambiguous sex. Two of her favorite up-and-coming figurative painters, Meena Hasan (who uses Indian Khadi paper) and Adam de Boer (who works in leather carving, batik, and Indonesian tile), both “incorporate materials and techniques that have been excluded from Western art history and have been explained and Other-ed by Western anthropology,” Nguyen said. She believes that viewers can walk away from such figurative paintings with a new sense of humility as they learn more about the artist’s world: a sentiment that could possibly lead to “a paradigm-shift in cultural history.”
In Mockrin and Nguyen’s estimations, then, contemporary figurative painting is good if it makes viewers think differently about art history and widely accepted cultural tenets. The best figurative painting can also disrupt our ideas of how the body in a painting—and in our world—should look.
Chivatour en La Calidosa, 2017. Esteban Ocampo ZieherSmith
Swedish artist Anna Bjerger paints images from found media (culled from journals, manuals, old photographs, and other sources). “A good figurative painting does something to you, surprises you, takes you somewhere different, is convincing and generous. A good painting often leaves you speechless,” she said. Like her peers, Bjerger also ties a figurative painting’s merit to the response it elicits in an individual. She admires the paintings of Marlene Dumas, whose work “feels naked yet lush”; the South African painter “manages to transcend meaning in a way that never feels blunt,” Bjerger said.
To ensure that figurative paintings do elicit a reaction in the viewer, it’s the artist’s job to keep working and making whatever feels most important in the moment. “If an artist is compelled to make an image,” offered Nguyen, “they should do so without overthinking its urgency or its reasoning to exist—figuring out those big-stake questions takes a lot of time and deep reflection.”
BILLY, 2018. Alejandra Hernandez Gallery Fritz
Ishbel II, 2018. Chantal Joffe Victoria Miro
Alejandra Hernández, who maintains a studio in Belgium and makes colorful portraits of contemporary subjects, certainly shares that attitude. When asked, “Why make figurative paintings in 2019?” she answered, “Why not?” Painting, for her, slows down the pace of contemporary life, particularly in our visually saturated culture. Since the advent of photography in the mid-1800s, opposition to figurative painting has argued that there are more accurate, realistic ways to capture a body than the fallible brush and human gesture. Around 1839, French painter Paul Delaroche famously declared: “From today, painting is dead.”
It’s only dead, of course, if you’re trying to compete with photography (and even then, painters ranging from Chuck Close to Vija Celmins have made intriguing photorealistic work that comments on the medium). Hernández, in contrast, doesn’t believe that anatomical and perspectival correctness should matter when we judge figurative canvases. It’s more interesting, she thinks, for artists to “play with all the variables (time, structure, composition, color, matter, perspective, atmosphere) and turn them upside down, mix them up until they can finally collide and form an image that can hold itself together.”
The ability to portray an imaginative, alternate reality can be a figurative painter’s greatest asset—the art form allows artists to revel in the peculiar and uncanny as they render life askew. Hernández herself is a fan of figurative painters such as Monica Hernández, Haley Josephs, Chantal Joffe, andEsteban Ocampo, who, as she put it, echo the human experience of “tiptoeing in this strange and exhilarating society.”

Wtv, it’s cool / j. Farrell | October prompts !
A|N: idk where the fandom is for this show but I’m out here! Although this will probably flop in the notes department—that’s okay! I just felt like I should write something for ‘ol Jimmy boy. Also sucks that the show’s been cancelled but I can’t say I’m surprised? There’s been absolutely no promo for bridge and tunnel and the last season kinda set it off just in case.
Plot/prompt: #20. “There’s a guy standing in the backyard with a knife, that you?”
WARNINGS: reader is related to Mikey, bi reader, + angst = the relatable feeling of being left out + possible triggers for a violent crime although it is not explained in graphic detail!

October 29th, 1983 - October 30th, 1983
approx. 11:49pm to 12:13am
There was no reason Bonnie Polanco should be held up inside her aunt and uncle’s house on hallow’s Eve. Some might say this was a choice but she did not make the choice for her untimely death. Bonnie Polanco did not deserve to be the victim of a senseless crime.
Do not think Bonnie didn’t have choices to be out in the city tonight. She was sure her acquaintance Stacey Ross would be there if she wasn’t with the rest of the gang tonight. Their circles (outside of the main crew) brushed by each other every so often but Bonnie grew to distance herself once the nose candy came out to play. That wasn’t her style, not to say that she didn’t explore other uppers by mouth but Bonnie knew her limits. She preferred a nice shot of tequila, and lime; would be on the next taxi or train ride back to Long Island.
The rich kids weren’t for Bonnie full time despite her going off to some fancy private university. Bonnie knew after a few years she’d lose touch with these kids and during the reunion, they’d still boast some more about their privileged opportunities and she might even hook up with a college fling in the backseat of their corvette or BMW.
That was a option but that wasn’t ultimately what Bonnie wanted.
She was alone, bowl of popcorn and m&ms sitting on the coffee table as she lounged in her pajamas watching a movie starring the horror queen herself, Jamie Lee Curtis, in a film called, “Prom night.” Bonnie had a pillow clutched to her chest, elbow pressing into the arm of the couch as she watched the scene slowly unfold in front of her.
Bonnie remembered Mikey and the boys heading to the theaters to see this one. This surely pissed Bonnie off and she let her cousin have it. She told him that they should’ve been the ones to go together but that completely slipped his mind. Going to the movies was their thing and Bonnie’s love for film started once she moved down here from New Jersey to Long Island in high school and began work at the drive-in.
Mikey didn’t see the big deal, thinking it was just something regular to do and couldn’t understand why Bonnie was upset over this. He was often oblivious, always been that way; constantly moving onto the next thing and not thinking about the possible consequences after. Sure it was something small but it always felt like Bonnie came second to Mikey’s—no—their shared friends. It also went over his head when he decided to start dating Tammy Ocampo, the first friend out of his group that Bonnie really bonded with. In fact she was the only one out of the girls that Bonnie really got along with.
That slowly developed into a crush which Bonnie put a stop to once Mikey and Tammy were together longer than a month. Bonnie hated being the third wheel but Tammy always wanted to include her knowing how she felt when it came to the rest of the group. Bonnie knew she had to understand that their history was much longer before she even came into the picture. However it slowly began to feel like she was only their “friend” because of her relation to Mikey and that was a shitty feeling.
It only started to feel that way once they all ended back in Long Island after school.
Bonnie did her best to drown that feeling out as Mikey left the house not long after his parents. The girl was going over scripts at the kitchen table when Mikey came trotting down the steps to grab a drink before he left.
“This is what you’re doing on all hallow’s Eve, prima?”
“What else would I be doing, Mike?” Bonnie grumbled, cheek pressed into the knuckles of her hand, “I’ve got a pretty demanding job even as a intern as a writer’s assistant.”
Mikey hummed as he flicked at the pages just for Bonnie to slap his hand away, “I thought a part-time job gave you some time to breathe. Do you even have a costume for Halloween?”
“I’ll most likely be at the office.”
“That’s not what I asked you?”
“We can’t wear anything crazy but I can get away with some headwear.”
Mikey snorted at his cousin, “cat-ears? I dunno…Doesn’t really seem like your style. You should have worms coming out of your head like that one lady…Medusa.” He snapped his fingers at Bonnie who scrunched up her nose, “because you’re a book-worm. Get it?”
“That’s not…I’m putting elf ear prosthetics on although I plan on being a fairy for the night…whenever I get off.” Bonnie answered, mumbling the last part.
Mikey pushed his lips outwards with a tilt of his head in thought, “I can’t wait to see that!”
“Actually…could you paint them for me? Please. They don’t exactly match with the rest of my skin.”
Mikey nodded glancing at the clock, “of course. Just remind me, you know I forget things sometimes. Look, I’ gonna head out. Will you be here when i get back?”
“I think I’ll be the only one here.” Bonnie dryly joked, knowing that her aunt and uncle went down to Jersey for the weekend and would be back in the morning sometime.
Mikey breathed out a small laugh, leaving the beer on the table as he went around to kiss Bonnie’s cheek, “try and have a good night by separating from work and have some fun, dammit!”
Once the door shut behind the bronzed man Bonnie let out a low sigh, “thanks for the invite!”
And that was the last time Mikey Diaz saw his cousin alive.
A hour or two had passed with Bonnie having to get up for a bathroom break. She tried to hold her bladder for as long as she could and until a commercial came on but that tequila always went through her pretty fast. Shaking out her damp hands, she was just exiting the half-bath downstairs when her ears picked up on the phone ringing. Jogging into the kitchen, Bonnie plucked up the device from the counter, answering it.
“Diaz residence, this is Bonnie speaking.”
“Bonnie!” Jimmy Farrell’s voice yelled through the phone making her sigh as she rested her elbows against the counter, “what’s going on? Don’t tell me you’re still at home?”
“Story of my life, Jimmy.” Bonnie replied, “where are ya?”
“Ya know, the usual, down by the bar. I’m using the pay phone outside. It’s crazy in there.”
“You would think people would have gotten their partying done yesterday.”
“Is that where you were?”
“Nah, that was Friday’s plans.” Bonnie winked, knowing Jimmy could probably picture that as he laughed.
“Ah, of course it was!” Jimmy commented followed by a brief silence, “it’s good to hear your voice, ya know?”
Bonnie couldn’t help it but she instantly felt herself chewing down on the tip of her tongue, although that did not stop the sudden words flying out of her mouth, “is it now? I’m starting to forget what all of you look like.”
“…what do you mean by that?”
“I’m saying…I know we’ve all been busy but it seems like the rest of you always have time for each other.”
“This got to do with Tammy and Mikey?” Jimmy was the first to know about Bonnie’s small crush on Tammy and Tammy was the first to know about her feelings for Jimmy back when they were all teenagers.
Bonnie’s hand tightened on the cordless phone, “I’m over Tammy and Mikey. It is what it is, I stepped back and I respect it. That’s what you do for family right? And It’s not just about them it’s about all of you.”
“What about us, Bon?”
“Why wasn’t I invited tonight?”
Jimmy paused.
“I—we assumed you’d be workin’? Aren’t you? Most of the time you can’t come out because you’re working. And you know you don’t have to ask, just come show your face.”
Huffing Bonnie clenched at her hair, “it’s just feels nice to be included sometimes, even if I can’t or I’m too tired to be there. It’s not something you guys should take personal…it’s starting to feel like you don’t want me around.”
“Who said that?! We love having you.”
Bonnie clenched her eyes shut, feeling them sting as she listened to Jimmy say this. Maybe it was the tequila that had Bonnie a little emotional tonight but a dance party for one might kick that feeling away. Right now? She was on the phone with her old childhood love interest and to hear how genuine the curly haired man sounded felt nice, yet the hurt felt more overpowering.
“Listen…I don’t mean to sound selfish or make everything about me. And I know I sound immature but I just needed someone else to know that I’m still here.” Bonnie felt her voice shake and Jimmy suddenly began to feel like shit.
He pulled at the cord of the payphone as he heard the tone of his dear friend’s voice change. Jimmy Farrell was always fond of Bonnie Polanco, sure he might have been head over heels for Jill Shore but he valued his friendship with Bonnie. He didn’t learn about Bonnie’s feelings until homecoming when they were sixteen and he and Jill called it quits for the 50th time. Jimmy took Bonnie to homecoming because he wanted to, not for pity or to get back at Jill. Jimmy liked spending time with Bonnie, she was driven, slightly spiritual, and allowed Jimmy to be his emotional cancer self—without judgment.
The least he could do was listen to his friend’s concerns.
“How can I forget? Pags and I always ask Mikey about you when we don’t see that pretty face in awhile.” Jimmy told.
Bonnie scoffed, “oh shut up.”
“Seriously! I’m not jokin’, I’m the main one always in your business and Mikey hardly knows shit. I’ve been trying to catch up, left some messages for your uncle to relate to you but I hear you don’t get home until almost eight every night! Are you out with someone else when you get out of work?” Jimmy ranted and it almost made Bonnie smile that someone still cared.
The answer was no.
Neither her uncle or her aunt told Bonnie that Jimmy called for her every so often. Part of Bonnie wanted to believe that it was because of time differences with Bonnie getting home at the latest during the week. However when Bonnie’s uncle did pick her up from work, there was never a conversation about Bonnie and Mikey’s friends. It was always about work with her Tio and with her Tia? She was more concerned about Bonnie’s love life and when she would be someone’s wife.
“Is this your way of asking me if there’s someone else?” Bonnie teased, beginning to move around the kitchen.
Jimmy rubbed at the back of his neck, “well I guess yeah! I want to make sure they’re making you happy.”
“I make myself happy.”
“Sure, sure. That’s fine and dandy,” Jimmy said, “but don’t you want to share that with someone else too? From what I can tell…you sound lonely.”
Bonnie was silent at that for a moment, almost making Jimmy think that the line disconnected. He was just about to say, ‘hello,’ when Bonnie came back in over the line.
“Whatever, it’s cool.”
Jimmy shook his head, not wanting his friend to brush this off. It was common for Bonnie to put things to the side at the expense of others and he hated when she did that.
“How’s Maya?”
See.
“Oh…you don’t know about that. We ended awhile back…she’s with someone else out there. Part of me saw it comin’ but it stung for a bit.” Jimmy stated.
Bonnie hummed. She’s only heard about Maya, didn’t have the chance to meet her but from what she heard Jimmy was smitten with her. Before Bonnie got the chance to meet Maya she was off again…without Jimmy.
“So that means you’re back with Jill. That’s tiring isn’t it?”
Jimmy frowned, “how do you just assume that?”
“It’s the same story all the time Jimmy! And you didn’t deny it.”
“I thought we were talkin’ about you.”
Bonnie summarized, “Okay. I’m lonely and you’re in a exhausting on and off again relationship that’s been going on long before I even got here.”
“We’re open…” Jimmy finalized but it sounded more like a question which made Bonnie laugh as she began going through the cabinets in search of another snack.
Jimmy cleared his throat knowing that there wouldn’t be much time left of this call, “look, I’m always gonna love Jill but we can’t keep holding each other back. It’s her time to go explore the world and the thing between Maya and I was just new, passionate but temporary. It probably would have always been that way.”
“Sexual?”
“Whatever.” Jimmy bit, “I’ve always been sure about you, Bonnie.”
Bonnie couldn’t help but to roll her eyes, “is that so? Meaning?”
“Maybe you’re what I truly need and I was just too stupid and too late to realize that.”
Bonnie was pacing now.
“Jimmy Farrell, are you drunk?”
“I’m sober. Didn’t even touch anything but water tonight for this exact reason. I needed a clear head to say what I’m thinkin’.”
Bonnie stopped in front of the door that led to the backyard. Her eyes went into slits as the automatic lights turned on to a silhouette in the backyard with something glimmering in their hand.
“…There’s a guy standing in the backyard with a knife, that you?”
“A what? How could I be there if I’m on a pay phone with you?”
Bonnie rushed to the door, making sure it was locked and quickly went to the front door to do the same. Next she went to the windows.
“Bonnie? Say something. What’s goin’ on?”
“Is it Pags or Mikey messin’ with me? Maybe they left the bar?”
“No. I would of saw them leave.” Jimmy swallowed the lump in his throat as he looked towards the front door of the establishment, “please tell me you’re pulling my leg just to get me to shut up about the possible idea of you and me getting together.”
“I wouldn’t go to this extreme and I think you know that, Jimmy.” Bonnie felt her heart race as she jogged around the house, turning the tv off to listen to any sound of the intruder.
Then she went back into the hallways to dig in the closet for the metal baseball bat her uncle kept in there. And when she kicked the door shut she was met with the same menacing figure holding a knife. The phone slipped from in between her cheek and shoulder.
Jimmy listened fearfully at the multiple thuds, objects breaking, and your scream that sounded through the phone. He also hollered your name just as the call ended.
The year was 1993; Almost ten years to the exact date when the crew lost Bonnie. It never completely erased from Jimmy’s mind since he was the one who found her and the last that held her. Jimmy Farrell became quite successful as a photographer, alternating his most of his career between Alaska and New York. He was excited to be close to home, in queens for a shared showcase with his old friend Mikey.
“I just want to thank you all for coming tonight,” Mikey started as a circle of familiar and some unfamiliar faces surrounded the two, “I also want to thank my brother Jimmy Farrell for taking the time out of his busy schedule to collab with little ‘Ol me on this very special project.”
Jimmy scoffed with a roll of his eyes as Mikey playfully shook his shoulder, “As you all know it’s not easy work stepping into the art scene and it’s been extremely hard for kids like us. The bridge and tunnel kids. We might not fit your standards but you can never say we aren’t determined, ain’t that right, Jimmy?”
“Absolutely.” He dipped his head, hands lightly clasped in front of him.
Mikey kept a square glass in his hand as he took a deep breath. Jimmy could tell Mikey was nervous and was honored that he picked him to share this moment with. If he stopped fidgeting, Jimmy would have given him a hand as a sense of comfort but he was aware that just him standing up there with Mikey was enough.
“I’ve been in a bit of a fog lately and couldn’t figure out why,” Mikey continued, “it took awhile for me to just do it. Just to be here right now, Despite what my parents said in the beginning and what the art critics said once I started to take art seriously. The last time I put something out was almost a year ago and I knew I needed a nice kick in the ass to continue my craft…which is why I reached out to Jimmy here.”
Jimmy raised his brows wondering if this was his cue to take over and with Mikey briefly holding his hands out to carry on, he took over speaking.
“Mikey didn’t have any consideration for time. My phone’s ringing off the hook and it’s four in the morning! With us having a four hour time difference and I’m thinkin’ whoever the hell this is, deserves a nice kick to the face,” Jimmy explained as he earned some laughter, “I pick it up, still half asleep and to my surprise…it’s Mikey Diaz. He’s one of the bridge and tunnel kids I went to talking to once every two months to talking to every day after that call. At first I thought it was horrible news however that call did change my life.”
Mikey joked, “along with the phone bill, Jimmy.”
“Hey, you started it.” Jimmy argued making Mikey place his hand on his own chest in surrender.
“…Which brings us to this piece here.” Mikey held his arm out to large canvas that was covered with a sheet, “I’m not sure how many of you know what really pushed me to be a artist. It was dark times and not just the rejection of a proposal and finding love with someone else.”
He sent a wink out into the crowd to his wife, Lucy, who blew a kiss his way.
“It was the lost of my cousin, also a upcoming artist, Bonnie Polanco.” Mikey went silent, staring down into his glass for some time.
Jimmy cut in, “she suffered a tragedy back in 1983 at the Diaz household in Long Island. She was murdered at the age of twenty-five and…someone like her can’t be forgotten. Her birthday is tomorrow and we always wonder what plays or movies she would have written and directed.”
“Bonnie should still be here with us,” Mikey found his voice again, “which is why Jimmy and I wanted to keep her memory alive for her thirty-fifth birthday this year. Bonnie was a writer with so much to say that writing was often easier than speaking most days. If you let her, she could go a whole twenty-four hours without saying a single thing but being around guys like Jimmy, another one of our friends, Pags who’s also here with us tonight out in the audience, and myself? We couldn’t have that.”
“Oh no,” Jimmy laughed, “she would always crack with me first though.”
Pags spoke up from the audience, “Yeah, sure in your dreams, Jimbo!”
“Whatever.” Mikey added with a laugh.
“It’s cool?” Jimmy pointed.
Mikey paused at that, picking up on the phrase.
He smiled at his friend as he suddenly ripped the cover off the canvas. His eyes scanning the picture in happiness before his eyes shifted to Jimmy who soon walked over.
“Wow, look at her.” Jimmy breathed.
The image was a picture Jimmy took of Bonnie mid-morning by one of the ponds downtown at home. Jimmy just purchased some film for his new camera and wanted Bonnie to be his first test subject. Sure he was doing a lot at that time, working her angles and even got down on the ground, on his back, to get this particular shot. She had her arm raised to shield herself from the lens but not enough.
Mikey ended up using pieces of the photo that was enlarged on the canvas while the rest happened to be painted by Mikey himself. Mikey also included pieces of her script, she was the only one who wrote in script out of the bridge and tunnel kids—unless they were signing away something.
“Bonnie was working on rough drafts of a untitled story. Most of these words that you see in her handwriting are from that story and some from her own: Q.T.J.—quick thoughts journal that she kept at my parents’ house.” Mikey explained, finally taking his eyes off the artwork to peer at the faces behind him.
Tammy had her hand covering her mouth, tears shining in her eyes.
Mikey turned back to Jimmy who said the next words with him, “This is: Bonnie’s Cool.”
Jimmy reached out to smack Mikey’s shoulder who grinned at him. This was also Jimmy’s first time seeing the image but once he sent over some photos for Mikey to use, he left that creative expression up to him and Jimmy was glad he did. He reached out to share a hug with Mikey who accepted easily accepted the invite.
“This is fuckin’ nuts man.” Jimmy held onto his friend who laughed.
Mikey squeezed the curly headed man, “Couldn’t have done it without ya, Jimmy.”
“…thank you man. Thank you for sharing Bonnie with us forever.” Jimmy found himself whispering.
Mikey began to respond but his words began to fade out. Jimmy found himself seeing Bonnie off to the side, watching as he embraced her family. There she stood, playing with the rings on her fingers like she often did when she was deep in thought. Her head turned back to the art and she found herself scowling at it with a small smile playing on her full lips.
“Thought I told you no photos and to get rid of it, Jimmy?”
“And why would I do that?” Jimmy asked, “It helps to look at when I’m missing you.”
Bonnie huffed in her gold dress as she peered over at Jimmy underneath her eyelashes.
“Whatever.”
“I love you, ya know? Even if we only got to explore that as friends.”
“Nah, I’ll always remember homecoming.” Bonnie winked.
Jimmy thought about that and laughed, “that over the top kiss we shared in front of that moron?”
“ well I enjoyed myself. bruce was being a asshole as usual and you did me a favor by not pushing me off when I planted one on ya.”
“Just for him to be here tonight.”
“Where?”
Bonnie followed Jimmy’s line of sight and grimaced, “and he was talkin’ all that shit about my weight in high school and look at him now? Ten years later, holy shit!”
Bonnie held her mouth open as Jimmy laughed at her, his eyes scanning every detail in her face.
“I wish you could really be here, Bon.”
“I know but it’s fine. I was going to say something corny like, im always here in your heart or something.” Bonnie answered with a shake of her head, making Jimmy snort as she continued, “I’m okay, you’re all doing okay and that’s all that matters.”
Jimmy swallowed, “…I wish we had more time. Wish I could hold you one last time.”
Bonnie stopped twisting her ring and began walking towards Jimmy and Mikey who still held onto each other. Jimmy felt his breathing hitch and closed his eyes as Bonnie got closer. He could still smell her, the light floral scent of baby’s breath—which was strange no doubt, and he wondered if anyone else was witnessing this. He hoped not, he wanted to be selfish and have this moment just to himself. However he knew Mikey felt the brush of coldness that engulfed their bodies in their embrace.
Jimmy and Mikey finally stepped back leaving Jimmy to pat his friend’s face who wiped and sniffed away some tears. They broke apart smiling as Tammy, Pags, Stacey and Jill came up to stand beside them…admiring Bonnie one last time.

DECEMBER PROMPTS ❄️ — 4. MIKEY ; Bridge & Tunnel
Dialogue prompt: “want to kiss at midnight?” + “happy new year, babe.”
A/N: this will probably flop like my gael one but I wanted to write for this goregous man. Bridge and tunnel was relatable to my life since there’s barely any shows set in college/after college lol plus each episode is pretty short so that was easy to get hooked in. Also attempting to get something short and sweet out before we bring in the new year, it’s only right? Happy New Year! Hope it’s better than the last two lmao. Be safe out there wherever you are!
*•*•**•*•*•*•*•*•*••*•*•*•*•*•^•^•^•^*•*
The cold in Long Island was something else. And one thing about you, you hated the cold—although you spent years getting accustomed to it as the world switched seasons, you always preferred tropical weather. Summers in Long Island were full of freedom for you, there was never much for you to worry about. Which is why the moment you received the opportunity to pursue nursing for a internship in Hawaii, you went. You regretted having to leave the island after six months but eventually settled in Florida recently afterwards.
Florida took time getting used to, it wasn’t like New York but you could never get rid of the New York in you, it’s not something you’ve ever wished for and you always found yourself coming back home (when afforded) or being in touch. So you caught a flight two days after Christmas to not only visit your big family but to see your old childhood friends.
It was late in the evening when you all agreed to meet up at the park you all used to chill some days after school. You pulled up in your two-door jeep beside a familiar car that belonged to your old friend, Tammy Ocampo who sent you a wide smile and gloved wave through her driver’s side window. Returning the same gesture, you placed the car in park looking out towards the dark lake and the twinkle of the city life.
Sighing you sat taking it in for a moment before you shut the car off, along with the sound of thudding hitting your driver’s side which caused you to flinch.
“What’s happening, y/n?!” The voice that caught you off guard belonged to another friend, “Pags'” Pagnetti who was also full of grins and wide arms as they shook your car.
Holding your chest you yelled, “you piece of shit, pags! Whad are ya tryna do give me a heart attack here?!”
Unblocking your seatbelt you huffed as you pushed the door open, not caring that it bumped your loud-mouth obnoxious friend in the stomach. The wind whipped your short hair back as you stood in the night as you reached out to continue your assault on your friend, shoving at his arms while he laughed; finally yanking you into a hug.
You rubbed at his back as you commonly did when you gave hugs, Pags was just this big teddy bear who had big dreams just like the rest of you. Usually he got the short end of the stick out of the seven of you but he never gave up—now managing multiple underground artists along with his sister and Jimmy’s sister’s band. The man seemed to be slowly but surely doing just fine for himself and didn’t have to lie about it to you over long detailed phone calls.
You wanted all of your friends to win and you hoped to see it. For now you were all just grasping what your dreams were made of and damn it felt nice.
“Ah, Happy you’re here, y/n.” Pags sighed, squeezing your forearms before he turned to his curly big haired significant other who watched the whole exchange with a small smile on her lips, “you remember Juliana?”
“Of course, how could I forget! Bring it in.” You stepped toward to embrace the girl who briefly leaned into you, returning the hug.
Juliana was fairly new to the group and fit in quite well, she balanced out Pags when needed and joined in on the conversations over the phone from time to time. She was more so Jill’s friend but you personally didn’t have a issue with getting to know her or her relationship with one of your very good friends.
“y/n! Is that you?!” Jill squealed from somewhere behind you, you saw her sitting on top of the bench as she cupped her mouth making sure you heard her.
It was impossible not to with anyone out of your group of friends, well…maybe except for Tammy who was more on the quiet and reserved side but each of you hardly had a problem being vocal with each other. There was too much history here for you all not to be comfortable with each other by now.
“The one and only, baby!” You called back, squeezing Juliana’s wrist before turning to make your way over to Jill now, noticing Jimmy also sitting by her—even after all this time, of course he’d be by her side.
The brunette hopped off the bench and tossed her arms over your shoulder to bring you into her thin frame. The both of you squeezed each other for a moment before she gripped your face to place a kiss on your cheek.
“My girl! Glad to have you back, how long are you in town for?” She asked, resting a arm across your waist as she began leading you back to Jimmy who was getting to his feet.
Sheepishly you answered, “not long. I go back on the sixth, the nursing field is no joke and never done.”
“I believe you. How’s that goin’?”
“It’s goin’.”
Jimmy cut in lifting you off your feet and squeezing your back, you were sure you didn’t need a chiropractor after that. He swung you around in the air like a rag doll before setting you back on your feet, “y/n! It’s so good to see you!”
“Likewise Jimmy boy! How was Alaska?”
You noticed him glancing at Jill who’s body language showed all you needed to know.
“Life changing. It might be permanent, might not be. It’s all up to me—enough of this serious shit we’re here to celebrate the end of the year, no?” He clapped his hands together as headlights flashed over you, just as Tammy was finally getting out of her car.
Your exchange was sweet just as the Latina was when Mikey and Stacey decided to make their presence known. The last you knew Mikey was spending more time with Tammy rather than Stacey lately so it was a shock to see him pull up with the blonde instead.
Tammy could feel your eyes side-eyeing her as she whispered, “we didn’t work out. It’s totally fine, don’t make it a big deal.”
You raised your hands as the two made their way over from Stacey’s red convertible with the top up, as to be expected. Mikey didn’t wait for Stacey, which was all the sign that you needed as he made his way over first. The man probably still didn’t own his own car so there was no need to jump to conclusions yet.
He went down the line of greeting everyone, the hug was a little awkward with Tammy but nonetheless she tried to make it not seem that way…although it was pretty evident that she was a little unsure.
“Y/N. My, my, what a sight.” Mikey held up your hand as you did a twirl in your winter attire, letting out a small laugh.
Mikey was always flirtatious, it was in his nature. You each had a story with each other: you were the first to find out Tammy’s crush on Mikey back in high school while he was too busy sleeping around with Stacey, and you were the first girl out the group that he became friends with before those two became friends with benefits. You were all there through it all, the constant high school drama and you were the main one putting Mikey in his place when be couldn’t get his head out of his own ass or Stacey’s for that matter.
So no it didn’t shock you that Mikey wasn’t in love with Stacey, that was something you been knew. And sure you knew that hurt Stacey’s ego but you and Stacey were always at each other’s throats: she felt like you thought you were better than her and you didn’t care for the way she didn’t take accountability for her actions.
You were last on each other’s list of friends, that’s for sure.
“I don’t think we’re looking at the same thing, Mikey.” The blonde said from behind his shoulder as she sized you up.
You let out a laugh, “it’s a good thing I love what I see in the mirror.” You brushed her off as you didn’t bother to make eye contact with her.
Mikey was all smirks as he peered down at you as you locked your hands around his waist, he cupped your head placing a kiss at the top of your head before bringing an arm around the back of your neck and brushing his fingertips against your shoulder to pull you into his embrace.
He was always warm and smelled like berries, cedar wood, and lavender. That man was full of light and potential. You hoped his art career took off for him as well, it was harder to get in touch with Mikey since he tended to disappear to collect himself. It was what he did when he went away to college and would pop back up with smiles that would melt your heart.
“Come see me later, yeah?” He whispered into your ear before he moved on to greet Pags and Juliana.
You were positive that meant just to catch up right? However with the way this man was looking at you tonight, all the friends knew something was shifting in the air but you brushed that off.
That was just Mikey for you.
The night seemed to pass quickly with all of you huddling together and separately downing beers and smoking joints. It always felt like old times full of laughter and shit talking.
“I just want you to know that I’m perfectly okay with what happens tonight. I won’t be mad. I think I’m finally starting to move on and acknowledge that things don’t last forever.” Tammy quietly said to you before Mikey pulled you away to walk along the water.
Why did it seem like everyone else knew something that you didn’t?
You could say the same…
You hugged yourself as you walked along the water as you and Mikey fell into easy conversation. He told you that he decided against accounting, thank goodness! and went after art thanks to Tammy’s encouragement, honestly—although a certain blonde would argue against that…
“That girl is very observant, I constantly thank her.”
“She just wants what’s best for everyone. That ones got a good heart ya know?”
Mikey glanced back at their group of friends to see Tammy laughing at something Jill said. He nodded his head agreeing, “which I feel bad for not being what’s best for her in return.”
“Right, what’s up with that?”
He shrugged, “just didn’t work out the way we both wanted it to. I found that my head was always elsewhere and then she started her business, on top of working at the diner and we were both trying to build something separately while soon not having as much time for each other, so to save our friendship, we both decided that we’re better off as friends. Wrong timing, I think.”
“Hm,” you listened, “so what’s next in the relationship department? I can never get in touch with you or hear anything about your life.”
“Right, Sorry about that im so dedicated to sketching and sculpting lately I have to remember to make time for the ones I care about.” He glanced at you while you kept your eyes ahead.
You bumped his shoulder, “that’s riiight, can’t forget about the people that knew you before you get famous, Joan Miró.”
He flashed his pretty teeth at you, “you think I’m as good as him?”
“It’s not about what I believe, it’s ultimately your own state of mind.” You gently tapped his temple in which he gripped before slipping his hand down to rest in yours.
You let him hold your cold hand, curling your finger around his much larger palm. The both of you fell into silence after that until you reached the end of the land that surrounded the lake. So now you faced each other, your eyes on the glittering black water while Mikey burned his hazel eyes into your skin.
“Question for you, y/n.” He carefully brought a finger to rest underneath your chin.
Your eyes flicked to his in question.
“Want to kiss at midnight?” He grinned at you, while you rolled your eyes and proceeded to shove him away as he laughed.
“Fuck off, are you stupid?”
“I dunno my GPA tells me different, Cariño.” He winked at you while you shook your head at the taller curly haired male.
He continued, “last I heard, you were no longer engaged to that moron and whew! that was the semester before you graduated right?”
“So you can keep tabs on me but I get radio silence from you, what is this, Mike?” You had your eyes in slits wondering where this was coming from and this whole exchange felt like it was falling on the serious side.
Nonetheless, he shrugged with a smug smile on his plump lips, “just how I like it. Got to keep the mystery going.”
“Oh bullshit, there’s no mystery to you. You’re just making your way around the circle.” You fanned your hands.
He quirked up a brow, “if you think I’m gonna go after Jill and Juliana next then you’re outta your fucken mind and might need a CT yourself, Cariño.”
You mocked the Dominican man who let out a laugh at your antics before you pinched the space in between your brows. The clock was ticking and none of you knew who would be here for a long time, nothing ever lasted forever. This you knew and Mikey was your first guy best friend followed by Pags and Jimmy, it was always you and Mikey in the beginning. Jimmy and Pags were tight since elementary and then there was Jill and Stacey who were always together. Tammy shortly came along afterwards and sure she gave you the blessing you didn’t know you wanted? which means Mikey was asking around about you and you weren’t sure how to feel about it.
Normally you didn’t think too much, you just went with your gut. You weren’t really a over-thinker.
“You really want to kiss me, Mikey?” You cooed up at the man who pressed his forehead down against yours.
It was his turn to breathe you in, “only with your permission.”
“Do your worst.” You replied and he didn’t hesitate.
He delicately pulled your hips against his although he was much taller than you, you fit into his comfort like old friends did, and he kept you warm against the biting air. He kissed you like he longed for this exact moment, curious as he took his time moving his incredibly soft lips against yours while you tried to soak up the taste of him for as long as you could.
You kissed almost everyone in your group of friends before, never anything serious mostly a peck and kept it moving but this felt strange.
Like you were falling down a rabbit hole that you knew you would have to claw your way out of. You were not meant to stay in Long Island and your lips attached wasn’t forever like your friendship. Sure Stacey and Tammy could look past it with underlying emotion in the mix but you always had a challenging type of wall up.
Mikey ended the kiss with multiple pecks to every curve of your face to lock in his artistic memory and you had to pry your own eyes open after that. There was no doubt this man knew what to do what his lips and now you could see what made the girls go crazy growing up.
That wouldn’t be you though.
“Happy new year, babe.” He said to you staring in your eyes like you were infinite.
You smiled nonetheless but you knew this would not be forever. Time was ending in more ways than one unbeknownst to your friends but you held on a little tighter and placed another lingering kiss to Mikey’s lips, which he grinned at happy that he got what he wanted.
And then the both of you headed back to your friends who were whooping and hollering into the night, as pops and lights ripped into the air; signaling that the 90s was here.
You all held onto each other, you tighter than than the rest, as your eyes filled with glow and the rest with wonder.
