LES TESTAMENTS de Margaret Atwood

Ou l’art de sauver les meubles (refaire du bénéfice sur un produit qui a marché, mais avec brio)

Perçoit-on dans le ton doux amer de ce titre que j’ai ce qu’on pourrait qualifier de mixed feelings* à propos du livre d’aujourd’hui ?

Je suis naturellement sceptique lorsqu’il s’agit d’une suite d’un bestseller écrit trois décennies après son grand frère sur les nobles intentions de sa créatrice et sur son envie de satisfaire ses lecteurs avant son compte en banque (non miss JK, je ne me suis toujours pas remis de la catastrophe qu’était l’Enfant Maudit)

Mais avant de me jeter dans le grand bain de l’analyse, il est de mise de présenter Les Testaments :

Les Testaments de Margaret Atwood est la suite très attendue de La Servante Écarlate, écrit en 1984 - jolie coïncidence puisque celui-ci est une speculative fiction* au même titre que l’ouvrage d’Orwell -

Petit point de situation : Bienvenue dans la République de Gilead (correspondant géographiquement à la campagne profonde des États-Unis) qui, pour réguler le taux de natalité en chute de sa population, a la brillante idée de réduire les femmes en esclavage (le vrai, plus personne ne se cache) Les hommes y commandent et les femmes sont classées selon l’utilité qu’elles peuvent avoir :

CAS N°1 : Si tu es une femme lambda, tu seras une Martha, tu fais le ménage et la cuisine

CAS N°2 : Si tu es une femme riche et/ou que tu as des relations : tu seras une Épouse de dirigeant dont le doux nom est Commandant, donc tu restes à la maison et tu souris pour les photos officielles

CAS N°3 : Si tu es une femme intelligente : soit on te pend, soit tu deviens une Tante, tu éduques le reste de la populace

Et roulement de tambours pour le plus bel atout :

CAS N°4 : SI TU ES FERTILE, tu es une SERVANTE, autrement dit une esclave sexuelle

Une servante, c’est littéralement une marmite à faire des bébés sur pattes, qu’on traine de foyer de Commandants en foyer de Commandants, histoire de boucler la boucle

A ces femmes, on attribue une couleur : Gris pour les Martha, Bleu pour les Tantes, Vert pour les Épouses et ROUGE pour les Servantes Nous avons à présent nos Servantes Écarlates

On suit dans le premier volet une de ses dernières, Defred, devenue servante après avoir manqué son évasion vers le Canada de peu avec sa petite fille

S’en suit une longue suite de jours dans lequel le quotidien de Defred et les ressorts du système dans lequel elle est prisonnière se laisse à voir MAIS dans une tentative de ne pas vous divulgâcher -c’est ce qu’on me propose au lieu de spoiler, merci l’Académie- la suite, je n’irai pas plus loin

Vendu à des millions d’exemplaires et traduit dans cinquante langues, La Servante Écarlate a su trouver sa place dans la bibliothèque de chacun, devenant ce qu’on appellerait un classique de la littérature anglophone Ce qui est pointé notamment pour expliquer ce succès, c’est le réalisme de la situation : Parce qu’en effet, plus on avance dans le livre, plus on se dit que tout ceci semble vraisemblable

Le constat est glaçant, d’une part parce que parvenir à un stade ou imaginer des femmes en rouge lapider des criminels et servir de machine inséminatrice nous semble plausible est inquiétant D’autre part parce que justement une trentaine d’années après sa sortie, les événements nous paraissent TOUJOURS vraisemblables

En effet, La Servante Écarlate a, depuis quelques années, ressurgi sur les étagères de toutes les librairies et redonne des sueurs froides à une génération qui se dit (bien que très égoïstement et à juste titre) cela pourrait nous arriver

Le système dépeint par Atwood semble plus proche que jamais : de nombreuses lois limitant la liberté des femmes ayant été votées dans les États même qui constituent Gilead dans le livre C’est le cas en Louisiane (« Act 620 », passé en 2014, restreignant l’accès à l’avortement) ou au Texas

Le second point fort de ce livre, en bonne dystopie, est qu’en plus de nous donner à voir un système ultrapatriarcal et sanglant est qu’il n’offre pas d’issue à cette vision Lire 300 pages au bout desquelles on n’a pas de happy end*, dans lequel personne ne souhaite de happy end parce que bon, au final, chacun y trouve son compte, ça secoue Lire les 300 pages d’attente vaine de l’héroïne, ça secoue d’autant plus

Alors bien sûr on en redemande : 34 ans après, on nous sert sur un plateau les Testaments

L’objectif ici : répondre à toutes les questions que la Servante ne satisfait pas Comment Gilead s’est créé ? Comment fonctionne Ardua Hall, lieu où sont éduquées les Tantes, les Épouses et les Servantes ? Qu’est-il arrivé à Defred, à la fille de Defred ? Et ce qui nous taraude le plus, nous lecteurs utopistes : Le système possède-t-il UN TALON D’ACHILLE ?

Quinze ans après le premier tome, nous avons accès à des testaments (comme c’est étonnant) : des retranscriptions d’enregistrements vidéo (sortis d’on ne sait où) des déclarations de trois personnages, Agnès, Daisy, et Tante Lydia - entraperçue dans la Servante puisqu’elle assure la formation de Defred

On retrouve ainsi le même principe que dans la Servante, un récit-témoignage à la première personne, et donc, subjectif Ce qui change, c’est que l’on a accès ici à trois différentes strates d’analyses du système : Daisy vit au Canada, elle observe de loin Agnès est apprentie épouse, elle vit le système Tante Lydia est l’une des fondatrices, elle pense le système

Scénario très alléchant pour le lecteur avide de réponses, le synopsis semble crier : Curiosité prépare-toi tu vas être plus que satisfaite Le nouveau code couleur attire, annonciateur de renouveau de l’intrigue : fini la couverture rouge, l’heure est au vert et au bleu rayonnants

Pourtant, après lecture, POURRAIS-JE DIRE QUE C’ÉTAIT UN BON LIVRE ? Pas exactement

Je ne mentirai pas, j’ai pourtant avalé les 500 pages en trois jours J’ai retrouvé le sentiment d’empressement dans la lecture, si rare chez moi aujourd’hui Mais ma rapidité a plus été gage de divertissement passager que de réelle qualité

Car globalement, la recette est très réussie : de la première page à la dernière, le livre est distrayant Or c’est tout ce qu’il est DISTRAYANT

On sent derrière les mots l’autrice rodée dont le poids des années et les nombreuses lectures ont apporté la compréhension nécessaire du marché du livre pour fournir une suite intéressante, et qui correspond à un lectorat plus large que celui auquel était originellement destiné la Servante

Or si le résumé et le logo BOOKER PRIZE 2019 sur la couverture nous vend du rêve, on se rend vite compte que l’on est loin de lire une suite à la hauteur de nos attentes

Premier point divergent : l’intrigue Ou, si j’ose dire, la présence d’une intrigue Pardonnez-moi, LA PRÉSENCE D’UNE INTRIGUE DITE TRADITIONNELLE

Ainsi, si on a repris l’univers du premier tome, le second diffère en ce point qu’il va se passer quelque chose, que le livre à un but (dont on se rend compte dès les premières pages du livres qu’il est d’exposer les limites et la chute de Gilead)

Bébé Nicole est un bébé évacué clandestinement de Gilead que la République a transformé en martyr national Bebé Nicole trouve son utilité dans le quotidien des trois protagonistes principales : pour Daisy figure de l’espoir d’annihiler Gilead : SYMBOLE DE PROTESTATION pour Agnès figure de la cruauté des états qui entourent Gilead : MARTYR À ADORER pour Lydia figure à l’intérêt politique pur : INSTRUMENT DE PROPAGANDE

C’est la potentielle réapparition et sa localisation par Gilead au Canada qui déclenche l’histoire et petit à petit, les trois intrigues se resserrent toutes vers ce point convergent

La Servante Écarlate ne laissait pas de place à une quelconque issue ni pour son personnage, ni pour le système Le principe de la Servante, laisser à voir comment pourrait fonctionner un système totalitaire dont les femmes seraient les grandes victimes Autrement dit le livre il ne se passe rien, et pourtant ça marche  

Dans les Testaments les trois narrations partent d’un même point A, Bébé Nicole pour parvenir à un point B, ce qui va possiblement arriver à ce bébé

Le lecteur est en conséquence animé par les questions suivantes : Qui est réellement Bébé Nicole ? Va-t-on la retrouver et si oui, dans quel camp va-t-elle finir ? Quelles conséquences cela va-t-il avoir sur Gilead ? Le fait même que ce personnage dont on n’a jamais entendu parler dans le premier tome consiste le pivot même du récit parait forcé Conséquence : on ne s’attache pas à Bébé Nicole, on ne voulait pas de Bébé Nicole On se fiche de Bébé Nicole, et c’est mauvais signe pour le roman

Ce qui nous amène au second problème selon moi : LES PERSONNAGES  

Là encore, plus aucune trace de Defred (qui est simplement évoquée au détour d’une page) mais nous sommes confrontés à l’arrivée de deux personnages inédits : Daisy et Agnès Cette dernière offre un angle de vue intéressant : les descriptions de la vie à Ardua Hall sont très intéressantes, or ce sont les rares moments où le lecteur obtient des réponses à ce qu’il cherche en lisant les Testaments - si l’on met à part le récit de Lydia sur les débuts de Gilead et sur son accession au poste de Tante et est, à mon humble avis, ce que les Testaments offre de plus succulent à lire -

Il peut sembler tentant d’avoir accès à différentes strates d’opinions concernant Gilead néanmoins, on se rend vite compte que jouer le jeu de la pluralité des voix, c’est desservir ce qui constituait l’atout principal de la Servante : le lecteur n’avait accès qu’à un point de vue unique, la subjectivité pure celui de celle qui n’a pas choisi d’être là et qui subit

Dans la Servante Écarlate, Defred n’est ni assez crédule ou docile pour croire en Gilead, ni assez courageuse pour entrer dans la résistance Elle profite de ce dont elle peut profiter au moment où cela se présente à elle sans aucune autre intention que de rendre son quotidien moins terrible Ni héroïne, ni grande méchante, La Servante Écarlate était aussi le récit d’un individu dépassé par un système qui le domine Certes c’était à travers sa voix qu’on entrevoyait Gilead mais (et c’est ce qu’on aimait et détestait chez elle) Defred n’était pas un personnage fiable elle mentait (même au lecteur), elle pouvait être souvent lâche, complètement insensée ou étrangement courageuse, en somme elle était humaine

Ni bonne, ni mauvaise, tout simplement parce qu’elle n’avait pas la possibilité de choisir Defred n’était pas une héroïne et c’est encore une fois un des nombreux aspects qui rendait le récit magistral

Les Testaments piétine cette profondeur et nous fournit des personnalités préfabriquées : Agnès la pauvre victime soumise, Daisy l’adolescente rebelle mais héroïque, Lydia, la cruelle dont le retournement de veste est attendu à partir de la page 100

Enfin, je ne sais si mettre en scène des adolescentes sert le récit : elles apportent de la spontanéité certes, mais c’est la voie d’accès trop simple à un style d’écriture adouci, dont le vocabulaire est simplifié (plus besoin de dictionnaire pour comprendre les personnages, ô joie ô libération) et les phrases écourtées - Loin de moi l’idée qu’il est nécessaire d’avoir une grammaire impeccable pour écrire un bon récit, pourtant, encore une fois, la langue ardue et les phrases proustiennes constituaient une partie importante de l’ADN de la Servante –

D‘autant plus que cela amène un dernier problème qu’il me semble important de soulever : UNE DICHOTOMIE BIEN/MAL ENTRE LES PERSONNAGES TROP MARQUÉE Daisy est une adolescente, par définition, elle est révoltée, ce qui la rend vite insupportable, c’est pourtant sur elle que petit à petit le récit se concentre, c’est elle L’HÉROÏNE qui se bat contre le méchant régime tyrannique de Gilead, bouh

Si on mélange tous ces aspects du roman, on obtient une soupe certes bonne mais un peu fade, facile, presque forcée On obtient certes un bon roman dystopique, mais on a perdu l’essence du premier tome

Ce cachet très particulier dû à une écriture alambiquée, purement subjective, une intrigue volontairement obscure et propulsée par les vides disparait Le second tome, que je rechigne encore à qualifier comme tel, répond à ces vides, et ça a sur le lecteur le même effet que sur un enfant à qui on annonce que le Père Noël n’existe pas Oui, ce n’est pas parce qu’il n’existe pas qu’on a plus de cadeaux (ne nous méprenons pas, les Testaments reste une bonne lecture) mais on a perdu cette aura mystique qui tournait autour de l’origine du cadeau posé au pied du sapin

Margaret Atwood a pris le lecteur à son propre jeu Après avoir fermé la Servante Écarlate, j’aurais tout donné pour en connaitre plus sur le fonctionnement de Gilead, pour savoir ce qui arrivait finalement à Defred (ce que la série résout partiellement, et de manière très brillante) Maintenant que ces informations sont entre mes mains, j’ai la furieuse envie d’appuyer sur le bouton reset* et de n’en rien savoir

Parce que c’est bien ça le problème, le livre nous montre les limites d’un système qui passait dans le premier opus comme infaillible Il ne semblait pas exister de moyen pour faire s’effondrer Gilead La Servante Écarlate n’offre pas de happy end Et au fond, le lecteur que je suis n’en souhaite pas non plus

Si vous êtes encore prêt à soutenir une de mes énièmes analogies capilotractées, c’est comme tuer les cochons à la fin d’Animal Farm, on aimerait bien, mais on se rend bien compte que ça affaiblirait le sens Et bien Margaret, elle a tué les cochons (pour récupérer la poule aux œufs d’or, voyez-vous ça)

Je me trouve donc étiré de part et d’autre entre deux opinions contradictoires Oui, j’ai adoré avoir accès à l’intérieur du système grâce aux paroles d’Agnès, de Daisy et de Tante Lydia Oui, le développement des personnages est intéressant, notamment celui de Tante Lydia, qu’on ne perçoit dans la Servante que comme un lointain démon aux yeux de taupes habillé de gris mais qui se révèle être l’une des têtes pensantes du système Oui, voir l’envers du décor et se familiariser avec les grands méchants que secrètement, on préfère largement à Defred dans la Servante nous excite

Mais non, ça ne sert pas le monument qu’est la Servante Écarlate Non, je n’apprécie pas qu’on édulcore une telle intrigue sous prétexte que commercialement parlant, c’est le moment de sortir un second tome, et qu’une demi-douzaine d’éditeurs courent après la moindre page avec des dollars dans les orbites et qu’on applaudira pour sûr grâce à la popularité du premier tome

Je peux alors dire que j’ai aimé les Testaments avec l’âme d’adolescent que je possède toujours et qui a besoin de livres simples et efficaces, mais que je l’ai haï comme la pauvre suite de la Servante, sont il n’est pas à la hauteur

La Servante Écarlate est un livre complètement déroutant, qu’encore aujourd’hui je ne suis pas persuadé d’avoir compris Les Testaments est la petite sœur bien plus jolie et lisse que la Servante plus achevée, plus complexe dans sa construction dramatique et dans le développement de ses personnages, mais justement La petite sœur qui sait sourire parfaitement ne sait faire que ça Elle en devient par la même occasion totalement prévisible -  par-là, décevante Laissez-moi vous dire que quatre chapitres avant la révélation, vous savez qui est bébé Nicole (vous le savez, et vous avez raison)

Je ne nie pas que Margaret Atwood n’use pas d’un schéma narratif qui fonctionne : que nous fournir un récit à trois voix dont les évènements, les personnages et les temporalités s’entrecroisent sans qu’à aucun moment je ne sois obligé de relire le chapitre 38 pour comprendre le chapitre 52 (ce qui relève de la magie noire) Mais c’est comme boire pour la cinquantième fois son cocktail préféré, c’est toujours aussi bon, mais ça a des airs de déjà-vu

J’en suis venu à la conclusion que non, il n’aurait pas fallu de séquelle à la Servante Et que Les Testaments aurait pu être un bon livre, s’il n’en avait justement pas été sa suite

*parfois, l’anglais dit mieux les choses (signé l’imbécile qui ne peut s’empêcher de parler franglais)

NB : Comme il est plus facile de pointer les taches de graisse sur une chemise que de constater qu’elle est impeccablement repassée, j’ai axé mes propos sur ce que je reprochais au livre Afin de conserver un panel large d’avis, je vous liste ci-dessous les liens de certaines critiques, plus ou moins positives sur les Testaments histoire que ne pas vous décourager complètement (l’espoir fait vivre dirons-nous)

Les ombres à Madrid

Avant de partir en Équateur durant l’été 2014, nous avons décidé de passer une semaine à Madrid durant les vacances de Pâques 2014 afin de parfaire notre espagnol et d’appréhender la culture hispanophone.

Nous sommes partis durant la semaine sainte sans l’avoir fait exprès, ce qui a ajouté un peu de magie à ce voyage.

C’est une ville avec des quartiers très diversifiés, de très beaux parcs et des musées culturels incontournables.

1- Les places publiques.

Nous décidons de commencer notre visite par l’une des plus grandes places de Madrid, la Plaza Major, l’un des lieux emblématiques de la capitale de l'Espagne. Cette belle place piétonne est entièrement encadrée d’arcades et de bâtiments au style architectural très élégant et uniforme, avec de nombreux restaurants, cafés et magasins. L'office du tourisme de la ville se trouve également sur la place, dans la fameuse Casa de la Panaderia. Enfin, le centre de la place est décoré d'une belle statue équestre du roi Philippe III. Durant notre séjour nous y sommes allés à plusieurs reprises à des heures différentes de la journée: de nombreuses manifestations se déroulent sur cette place très animée.

Nous poursuivons par la Puerta del Sol, située à quelques pas de là. C’est un passage obligé car c'est ici que convergent plusieurs rues parmi les plus fréquentées telles que Mayor, Arenal, Alcalá et Preciados. La place, en forme de demi-cercle, concentre aussi quelques-uns des éléments les plus représentatifs de la ville. Nous levons les yeux pour admirer la célèbre horloge de la Casa de Correos, siège du gouvernement régional de la Communauté de Madrid. La Puerta del Sol abrite aussi, du côté de la rue Alcalá, la statue de l'Ours et de l'Arbousier, qu'on retrouve sur le blason de la ville. C’est une place très fréquentée, avec de nombreux touristes et madrilènes, nous sommes impressionnés par le bruit ambiant et quotidien de cette capitale.

Nous déambulons ensuite jusqu’à la Plaza de la Villa, petite place pittoresque à taille humaine à l’écart de l’agitation de la ville. Tout autour, nous admirons les façades principales de trois bâtiments édifiés à différents siècles. Le plus grand bâtiment de la place est la Casa de la Villa ou hôtel de ville. Nous sommes étonnés de l’absence d’arbre sur ces trois places, qui auraient pu donner de l’ombre, sous cette chaleur.

A l’heure du déjeuner nous nous dirigeons vers le marché San Miguel afin de découvrir les spécialités culinaires. Au fil des allées, nous nous émerveillons devant la gastronomie espagnole (jambons, olives, fruits et légumes, tapas...). Les stands proposent pour certains un comptoir pour déguster sur place. C’est un lieu élégant, vivant et parfait pour déguster des tapas le midi.

2- Les parcs et jardins.

En sortant du Musée du Prado, nous décidons de déambuler dans le jardin botanique qui jouxte ce lieu culturel. Ce n’est pas seulement un jardin ordinaire, ici sont cultivées de magnifiques essences végétales. Ce jardin royal est réparti en 3 terrasses. Nous commençons par la terrasse la plus basse présente les collections de plantes endémiques, médicinales, aromatiques et une belle roseraie.Puis, nous poursuivons par la terrasse des  écoles botaniques présente les végétaux selon la classification botanique de Karl von Linné, des plus primitives jusqu'aux plus évoluées. Nous sommes surpris par les différentes essences qui sont parfaitement étiquetées ! Nous finissons par la terrasse supérieure, plus romantique, qui abrite des serres anciennes et récentes. Nous avons apprécié le calme de cet écrin de verdure.

Après cette agréable découverte, nous continuons par le parc du Retiro, situé à proximité. C’est un parc immense, véritable poumon vert de la capitale, avec des milliers d’arbres à l’image de Central Park à New York. Avec cette forte chaleur, l’ombre et l’air frais sous les arbres font le plus grand bien. En poursuivant nous découvrons le Palais de Cristal et sa magnifique architecture en structure acier et ses grandes baies vitrées qui jouent de transparence. Enfin, nous nous dirigeons vers le grand étang octogonal qui donne à voir des balades en barques, véritable scène de loisirs. Tout autour, nous nous amusons à regarder et écouter de nombreuses attractions telles que des musiciens et magiciens...  !

3- Les musées et monuments.

A Madrid, deux musées sont incontournables pour les amateurs d’Art. Le premier est le Musée National Centre d’Art Reina Sofía qui rassemble des œuvres de Dalí, Miró et Juan Gris. C’est une véritable découverte des artistes espagnols; nous sommes impressionnés par la taille du fameux Guernica de Picasso. Nous passons plusieurs heures à admirer ces peintures, plus ou moins connues.

Le lendemain nous visitons le musée le plus connu et réputé de la capitale, le Musée du Prado dès l’ouverture pour éviter la foule. Ce musée a plusieurs entrées, chacune ornée de statues de peintres espagnols tels que Velázquez, San Jeronimo, Murillo et Goya. Sa collection d’œuvres se base essentiellement sur des peintures du XVIe au XIXe siècle. Nous découvrons des chefs-d’œuvre de grands peintres tels que Velázquez, El Greco, Rubens, Rembrandt, Nicolas Poussin ou Goya. C’est tout simplement magnifique et époustouflant de voir autant de chef d’œuvres. Le musée est tellement immense qu’il faut une grosse journée si l’on souhaite y découvrir toutes les salles.

A la fin de notre séjour, nous découvrons le Temple de Debod, véritable temple égyptien situé en plein Madrid au cœur d’un parc et entouré de miroirs d’eau dans lesquels il se reflète. A l’intérieur, nous sommes émerveillés par la décoration d’origine, les hiéroglyphes: un dépaysement total !

4- Des quartiers colorés et disparates.

Madrid est composés de différents quartiers très typiques et différents les uns des autres.

Lavapiés, situé au sud de la Capitale, est un quartier traditionnel, cosmopolite et multiculturel. Les rues sont étroites, colorées, bordées d’échoppes et de galeries d’art. Nous déambulons au hasard dans ces rues pleines de vie et de culture. Nous avons l’impression de vivre le quotidien de madrilènes loin de la foule des places publiques. Nous découvrons de nombreuses œuvres de street art.

Malasaña, au nord de Madrid, est un quartier pour les soirées où se mêlent les restaurants vegan et salons de tattoos, bars à thèmes, théâtres de rue et boites de nuit. En nous promenant, nous découvrons une population relativement internationale, un joyeux melting-pot dans une ambiance hipster et festive. L’art se lit aussi sur les murs des ruelles, des façades colorées de ce quartier. Une véritable découverte, un quartier où il fait bon vivre et flâner !

A côté de Malasaña, nous poursuivons notre promenade dans le petit quartier de Chueca, le quartier gay de la capitale. Nous trouvons aussi bien des boutiques, cafés, restos, qu’un grand marché couvert où l’on peut également déguster des tapas ! C’est un quartier mêlant des boutiques de chaînes, et des commerces « branchés » plus indépendants ainsi que bon nombre d’établissements pour une petite pause gouter ou tapas ! À l’heure de la sieste, le quartier demeure assez paisible, et s’anime plus en soirée.

5- La semaine Sainte et les processions.

Alors que nous ne l’avions pas fait exprès, nous nous trouvons à Madrid pour la semaine Sainte. Cela est très impressionnant car chaque jour, nous admirons des processions réparties dans l’ensemble de la Ville.

L’atmosphère qui se crée au son des tambours et des trompettes et les couleurs chatoyantes des costumes est l’un des signes d’identité de la Semaine Sainte en Espagne. Lors de ces processions, les effigies religieuses sont ornées de cierges, de fleurs et de châles richement brodés, puis conduites à travers les endroits les plus pittoresques de la ville. Elles sont portées sur les épaules des costaleros appartenant aux différentes confréries, elles sont accompagnées tout au long de leur itinéraire par des dizaines de pénitents vêtus de robes et chapeaux pointus.

6- Excursion à Tolède.

Nous nous rendons à Tolède en train pour la journée. Nous visitons la vieille ville fortifiée, ses ruelles étroites et déambulons dans la rue pavée principale qui monte jusqu’à l’église San Idelfonso. Il est possible de monter au sommet du clocher, de là, une vue imprenable sur l’ensemble de la ville.

Puis nous poursuivons jusqu’au monastère San Juan de los Reyes avec son patio arboré qui nous offre un instant de fraicheur pendant cette journée caniculaire.

De style gothique cet édifice du XV eme siècle est composé d’une église et d’un cloître à deux étages.Nous finissons cette journée par la Cathédrale Sainte-Marie de Tolède, qui compte parmi les grandes cathédrales gothiques espagnoles. Elle fut construite sur la Grande Mosquée de la ville.

C’est une très belle journée de visite en dehors de Madrid, différente de la capitale par son côté médiéval.

Des centaines de tambours convergent chaque 20 janvier vers la Plaza de la Constitucion (Donostia) pour fêter la San Sebastian.
