Day 91. (one quarter of the year DONE)
PART ONE.
The Poor Knights w / Kate and James.
I got a call on Thursday lunch from my dear friend Kate, who was heading north with her husband James to the Poor Knights. A small weather window had come up, and I was being offered the chance to drive up and meet them and jump on board their lil boat for a tour of the Poor Knights. WHAT THE FLIPPIN HECK NOW!!!??? It has been years since my only trip to the PK’s so of course I cancelled all the things, found someone to look after Sid and started packing my dive gear. At 6am on Friday morning, I jumped in the car and headed north, meeting James and Kate at Taiwawe Bay 2.5hrs later. We loaded my gear into the rib on the beach and headed out to the launch, a beautiful canvas topped four berth with a delightful wooden interior and a view for miles from the top. We drove out through schools of feeding Trevally and Kahawai, arriving at the Poor Knights an hour or so later. I took my long fins anticipating some big drops and wow wee, I wasn't disappointed. As I stepped off the boat the colour of the water was blinding. Deep royal blue, a colour that can only be achieved with immense depth and clarity. As we swam toward the first bay (which Kate calls the gardens) we greeted by a menagerie of fish. Sandaggers Wrasse, heaps of black angels, demoiselles, blue Maomao, pigfish and so much more.. even a Sharped Nosed Puffer (Clown Toado). We swum over a huge Northern Scorpion fish and wrapped round the rock to come back to the boat.
