i really love the works of gabriel rockhill (look for his article “the CIA reads French theory”) and taimur rahman for critiques of post-modernism from a marxist perspective, and i remember enjoying martha nussbaum’s critique of judith butler if you want a radical feminist pov. i’m still in the glacial process of reading it because the content stresses me out, but the Cultural Cold War by Frances Stonor Saunders is a broader exploration of how US intelligence and the ruling class astroturfed ideological and social movements that were compatible with (or at least, didn’t threaten) their interests, and could serve as threat neutralizing containers for potential revolutionaries

Who first translated the Qur'an into Bengali?

There is no end to the confusion among us who first started this fortunate work of translating the Quran into Bengali. Who or what word introduced in our society that Girish Chandra Sen, the evangelist of the new legislation of Brahmanism, translated the Quran into Bengali for the first time. This is the same thing about the founder of democracy, Abraham Lincoln. Just as such statements have no basis in the eyes of political scientists, similarly there is no reality in the eyes of Quran scholars. One or two printers and publishers of the Quran in our region, together with them, are freely promoting something that is historically unsupported.

 Girish Chandra Sen has translated and published the entire Quran, so there is no chance of underestimating him and his contributions. That is why he is the first translator to deny the contribution of others and call it oppression. We must acknowledge that he has translated and thanked me for this great work.

 Currently, many commentaries and Bangla Quran have been published. But two hundred years before today, this idea was unimaginable. At that time, the interpretation and translation of the Quran were mainly in Urdu and Persian. The glory of books in Bengal. Stories, poems, events, and Islamic themes were also written in the language of the book. The story of the Prophet, the victory of the Prophet, and many other religious matters were narrated in the language of the book. Hundreds of thousands of books including Khairul Bashar, Pandenama, Mesbahul Islam have spread the knowledge and enjoyment of Bengali literature from house to house. People were satisfied with them.

 The famous Mujaddid Islamic thinker and social reformer of India at that time, Shah Wali Ullah Muhadis Dehalvi (1803–18), and descendants of that dynasty tried hard for the full implementation of Islam in India. His great-grandson Shah Ismail Shahid (17-1831), along with his comrades, lit the lamp of the Islamic Renaissance. He has dedicated himself to setting his ideas with the help of Australians and Moses. The Maulana Amiruddin Basunia under consideration was a person of the past. According to the investigation, Maulana Amiruddin Basunia started the first Bengali translation of the Quran in 1806, about 60 years before Girish Chandra Sen's translation in 1855. He completed the Ampara translation of the Quran at that time.

 This historical information is supported by the writings of almost all Quran scholars from Dhaka and Calcutta. Almost all the Quran research institutes of both Bengalis agree that Maulana Amiruddin Basunia is the lucky person who gave a great start to this great work of translation of the Quran into Bengali. This information has been equally supported in Ph.D. research written on the history of Quran translation in Bengali in various universities of our country over a decade. Therefore, in only two years of his translation, the famous Quranic researcher Maulana Naeemuddin appeared with a reliable and complete translation of the Quran. Earlier, an English priest from Calcutta also translated the Quran. It is heard that Maulana Amiruddin translated the Quran from Basunia to Girish Chandra Sen, i.e. between 1608 and 1850.

 Even 6 years before Girish Chandra, another non-Muslim Rajendralal Mitra published a translation of the Quran. However, his translation was not complete. There were passages in his translation. In 1833, Maulvi Naeemuddin (1832–1907) published a monthly magazine called Akbar Islamiyya, through which he began to dispel the superstitions of society and translate the Quran. He died on 23 November 1906 after completing the translation of the Quran by 10 paragraphs. Akbar's Islamia lasted from 173 to 1793. Famous writer and editor Sheikh Abdur Rahim (1859–1931) praised Akbar Islamia and Maulvi Naeemuddin, then published from Tangled. The poet Abdul Qadir (1908–1974) noted in the third chapter of his book on civic literature and culture that Maulvi Nayimuddin was the first Bengali Muslim to translate the Quran into Bengali. He translated 10 paragraphs and was transferred on 23 November 1906 before the completion of printing. The poet Abdul Qadir has written in the fourth chapter of his book, and the first Muslim to translate the entire Quran into Bengali.  Urdu Tafseer and Bengali notes are given on either side of the border. Then at the end of that comment, the translator quoted what he said, ure is the original scripture of Islam, Amritamayan Quran… scholars have translated it into Persian, Urdu, etc. But to date, no translation of this has been seen in simple Bengali language which is understandable to the Muslims of Bengal. They were deprived of the sweet words of the Quran. This translation was published to overcome its shortage. Then in the fifth chapter, he tells about the translated commentary of Khan Bahadur Maulvi Taslimuddin Ahmed (1852–1926). The first volume (first 10 paragraphs) of his translated Quran was published in 1329 BS i.e. 1922 AD and the second section was published in 1330 BS or 1923 AD (second 10 paragraphs) and the third section or last section was published in 1925 AD. The first section was 456 pages, the second section was 456 pages and the third section was 521 pages. The original Arabic was not given in this translation, but the verses and Ruku numbers were given. In the sixth chapter, he mentions the names of all those who have completed subsequent translations of the Quran. Maulvi Abdul Hakim and Ali Hasan translated the entire Quran in 1936. Maulvi Nakibuddin Khan's (1890–197) translation was in 30 volumes in 30 paragraphs.

 Ruhul Amin, Maulana Mohammad Akram Khan, Maulvi Hawa Ahmed, Maulvi Moe. Taimur, Fazlur Rahim Chaudhary, Dr. Muhammad Shahidullah, dr. Kudrat-e-Khuda, Proc. Abul Fazl and others translated parts of the Quran. In 1933, Nazrul composed Ampara in poetry.Former dean of the Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies at Rajshahi University, Drs. Krishna Kumar, who published a special discussion-review and research literature on many translations and commentaries of the Quran. Muhammad Mujibur Rahman. His theme was the practice of the Quran in Bengali.

Karachi Literature Festival Goes London! Either it was #KLFLondon hashtag on Twitter or a post on Oxford University Press’s Facebook page where they announced KLF’s launch in Royal Festival Hall of London’s Southbank Center as part of their annual Alchemy festival. Unfortunately though, we don’t get literary vibes from Pakistan much and KLF is an exception to that persona of our homeland. But this time, it wasn’t the case and did it make me feel proud, because I, along with many other literature & book-lovers attended Islamabad Literature Festival with full enthusiasm few weeks back.

Karachi Literature Festival was founded in 2010 by Ameena Syed and Asif Farruki, now Pakistan’s biggest literary event. It first branched out to Islamabad as ILF in 2013 and now has grown beyond Pakistan on International horizon. KLF London, produced by Oxford University Press, was organized in collaboration with the Southbank Centre, Bloomsbury Pakistan (a research collective from London), and Rukhsana Ahmed. Event brought Pakistani and International writers, authors and scholars under one roof. Event turned out to be very successful w.r.t. public participation. Event tickets were pre-sold and all sessions were jam-packed.

Mohammed Hanif, an internationally acclaimed Pakistani-origin author and journalist formally inaugurated the event by his keynote address. Hanif talked gave unique insights into Pakistan’s history.  Guests and speakers were welcomed by Ameena Saiyid, KLF and ILF Founder & Director, Asif Farrukhi, KLF and ILF Founder, and Adrian Mellor, Managing Director, Asia Education, OUP. Pakistan’s High Commissioner to UK, Syed Ibn Abbas also addressed the participants.

Around 70 writers (Pakistani as well as International), scholars, critics, journalists, and artists participated, 20 sessions progressed simultaneously covering a broad range of themes, ideas, and subjects. Sessions were live streamed on Oxford University Press’ official Facebook page.

A separate strand for children which included an immersive theatre piece by Jungly Jadoogars; an animated film by the artist Fauzia Minallah; storytelling by the children’s author, Shahbano Bilgrami; and sing-along songs by the veteran Pakistani musician, Khaled Anam, were also a part of the festival.

Notable sessions from day 1 were ‘Transphobia and Misogyny’, a discussion on legislation around transgenders and women in Pakistan; ‘Reluctant Returners: Migrants, Refugees and Memories of the Homeland’ in which characters and fictions inspired by exile and displacement were explored. ‘Pakistani Renaissance? The Best in Cinema, Reportage, Theatre and Fashion’ with  Atiqa Odho, Faris Kermani, designer Maheen Khan, and journalist Cyril Almeida.

Taimur Rahman, Moni Mohsin, and H. M. Naqvi weighed up the challenge of portraying Pakistan’s gender and class divide in ‘Blaming the Elite: Class, Greed, and Gender in Contemporary Pakistan’. Educationists, entrepreneurs, and experts including Farid Panjwani, Ahmereen Reza, Mona Kasuri, and Ameena Saiyid were part of panel discussion titled ‘Madrassas and Montessoris: Are Private Schools Keeping Madrassas at Bay?’.

Shuja Nawaz, Maleeha Lodhi, Ishrat Husain, and Victoria Schofield analyzed geopolitical and internal challenges Pakistan is facing in ‘Against All Odds: The Price of Prosperity in Pakistan Today’ . In the session ‘Urdu ki Zid Mai: At Loggerheads: Urdu vs English vs Regional Languages’ Basir Kazmi, Ishrat Afreen, Harris Khalique and Asif Farrukhi discussed if Urdu in Pakistan is under threat from English or the regional languages.

The evening sessions comprised thought-provoking discourses on ‘Good Muslim, Bad Muslim: Diaspora Pakistanis Caught in Post Brexit Hate-Storm’, with Ziauddin Sardar, Farooq Bajwa, and Iftikhar Malik debating the challenges faced by Pakistani diaspora in Europe; ‘Karachi: City of Lights and Gangs’ with Laurent Gayer, Nichola Khan, Mohammed Hanif, Sobia Ahmad Kaker, Omar Shahid Hamid, and Kamran Asdar Ali talking about the battle for Karachi and its resilience despite political conflicts; and ‘Tweeting for Social Change: How Social Media is Influencing the Political Scene’ in which Huma Yusuf,  Umber Khairi, and Umair Javed discussed the impact of social media on Pakistan’s political scene.

The highlight of the festival was the ‘Satrangi Mushaira’, which was an open mic session for Pakistan’s regional language poets to recite their latest offerings. Another session ‘In Their Own Words: Writers and Poets from Pakistan’, moderated by Muneeza Shamsie, featured poetry and prose readings by writers of Pakistani origin including Imtiaz Dharker, Aamer Hussein, and Zaffar Kunial. In ‘Partition Stories’ Nimra Bucha, Vayu Naidu, Shayma Saiyid, Amrit Kaur Lohia, and Sarah Ansari presented a medley of readings, film clips, recitals, dance and poetry about the Partition of India.

The evening came to a close by a kathak dance performance by Shayma Saiyid and a music concert by Khumariyaan, a Peshawar-based music band known for their fusion brand of Pashtun folk music.

Capital’s 5th literature festival began on April 14, 2017.

Islamabad, April 14, 2017: Islamabad’s 5th Literature Festival started yesterday (Friday) here at a local hotel. The festival will feature a line-up of around 150 leading Pakistani and international authors, academics, journalists and artists along with exhibitions, book fair and a sumptuous food court.  The three-day festival is being organized by Oxford University Press (OUP).

The inaugural session was attended by the leading journalists, writers, poets, intellectuals and a large number of visitors. Addressing the inaugural session, OUP MD Ameena Saiyid said “Our goal is to make reading a pleasurable activity for young and old, men and women. We are aware that engaging and appealing books can entice children into the golden web of readership, promote creativity and imagination, and kindle hope for a more inspired and accomplished Pakistani generation in the future. This year popular personalities of 8 countries including Germany, France, Canada, Singapore and Italy will participate”, she said, adding ‘that this year we are celebrating 70 years of Pakistan at the 5th Islamabad Literature Festival.’

The keynote addresses were followed by a performance by Amna Mawaz Khan, one of the few classical dances in Pakistan who specialise in Bharatnatyam. She dedicated her performance to Mashal Khan, a student beaten to death in Mardan and talked about how no one came to his aid. She and Imran Nafees Siddiqui performed to Habib Jalib’s zulm rahe aur aman bhi ho as the tribute followed by Tillana, a Bharatnatyam piece by Indu Mitha.

After the inaugural some other sessions were held on interesting topics – Judiciary and the common man had Ashraf Jahangir Qazi, Afrasiab Khattak, and Bushra Gohar while the session was moderated by Mujahid Barelvi; a conversation between Zulfiqar Ali Kalhoro and Elisa Iori was held on heritage and social mobilization in post-conflict reality; Prison Narratives, a book by Akhtar Baloch held the complete attention of the audience.

The three-day literature celebrations will continue today and tomorrow as well with many interactive sessions, performances and activities featuring prominent literary personalities and several book launches.

Thousands of literature lovers throng ILF on the second day

Islamabad April 15th, 2017: Many literature lovers thronged the 5th Islamabad Literature Festival on its second day yesterday (Saturday) marking remarkable success for a large number of interactive sessions, dialogues, performances and literary activities here at a local hotel. According to details, residents of twin cities portrayed their unbiased love not only for literature but for the literary icons belonging to different countries of the world by visiting the capital’s Literature Festival.

To discuss the core issue of water, a special session titled “Where has all the Water gone? was well attended. Experts and concerned citizens Nisar A. Memon, Kaiser Bengali, and Aaron Mulvany debated the water crisis in Pakistan which was moderated by Rina Saeed Khan”. A Performance by Nimra Bucha and Sarmad Khoosat on readings from Amrita Pritam and Sahir Ludhianvi’s poetry focusing on their unique vision and elusive, unspoken romance was also featured on the second day of ILF. Attendance in the hall was reflective of the people’s interest.

“Gender Violence, Law, and Power in Pakistan focusing on feminists’ struggle for justice and equal rights” was held in which Nafisa Shah, Sherry Rehman, and Ijaz Shafi Gilani participated with moderator Samar Minallah Khan.  PPP MNA Sherry Rehman lamented that the state has gradually been losing its monopoly on violence, which allows others to take up arms and “lynch women and innocent students”. She said that in the 70s and 80s religion and politics were tied together, which resulted in murderous consequences for women and minorities who continue to suffer in Pakistan today.

Several new books including Pakistan ki Tehzeeb o Saqafat by Kishwar Naheed, Hybrid Tapestries: The Development of Pakistani Literature in English by Muneeza Shamsie, Learning to Live with the Bomb: Pakistan: 1998–2016 by Naeem Salik, Hyat-e-Shayr and Sur Mandal ka Raj by Ali Akbar Natiq, How Pakistan Got Divided by Maj Gen (R) Rao Farman Ali and The Arts and Crafts of Hunza Valley in Pakistan: Living Traditions in the Karakoram by Jurgen Wasim Frembgen were also launched on the second day.

Islamabad April 16, 2017: Islamabad’s mega literature celebrations ended yesterday (Sunday) as the Fifth Islamabad Literature Festival concluded here at the Margala Hotel. The success of the event could be gauged by the large number of vibrant participants who attended on the three days.

Tthe last day of ILF was dominated by renowned artist Anwer Maqsood as he had a session “Uljhay Suljhay Anwar which was included the author his wife Imrana Maqsood, Hoori Noorani and Sarmad Khoosat. A house-full at the session presented a huge tribute to the living legend.

The session ‘Will Technology Influence Music?’ featured Noori’s Ali Noor, Rakae Jamil, Masuma Anwar, Akbar Yezdani and moderator Taimur Rahman. Starting off the session, Laal spokesperson Mr Rahman said technology has always impacted the arts and music.
