Blacktech Week’s 2017 List Of The Greatest Metropolitan Areas For Dark Operated Services.
I was recently said to by a friend that when a person is called nice", they believe it is actually merely a polite technique to mention boring"; and joe-U-teretani.info also while Taichung wasn't precisely ordinary, it absolutely really did not spin all our tires. Each of those metropolitan areas has one thing terrific to encourage it, and they do not consistently appear on the "absolute best" notes folks put together. Development, Performance and Modernism: GSA Buildings of the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. Our opportunity on Doi Lang was extremely pleasurable along with great deals of area to ourselves, solitude plus great deals of birds. I enticed him my method is by far the most effective technique to prospering throughout life, rather than by yelling as well as , making an effort to reduce every person else, ruining the partnerships that generate close friend- ship and passion, blocking your arteries as well as rusting the pipes that keeps you active - along with bile and also acids steaming via your vascular as well as intestinal bodies. Rock jazz hip jump very hot disco jockeys are actually some of the coolest factions of the night life in the bars of Athens which remain available late in the night tabbing along with the noises of live conventional and also western popular music Athens is actually an area that revels and also party all evening long. What probably will possess been a ordinary as well as efficient link had it been actually designed throughout every other age, the Dumbarton Bridge was actually installed 1914-15 as well as influenced through what is called the City Beautiful Activity." This reform philosophy of North United States construction and also urban planning prospered in the course of the 1890s as well as early 1900s, particularly in D.C., along with the intent of introducing ornament and also monumental majesty in United States urban areas. Whether it's the eye-catching beach fronts, fascinating shipyard, playgrounds, sports or buying locations, the metropolitan area is entirely life-throbbing. To truly experience the area you require to visit among the various markets. Costs Neuendorf, the urban area's financial growth supervisor, told Money management & Business in August that a north-south by means of road as well as two-story townhomes offer individuals the feeling of being in an area.

Gerogetown in Penang is actually likewise a UNESCO ancestry internet site immersed in wealthy history and society, and tourists are actually urged to look into both urban areas. At 84.6 kilometres away from the urban area of Coimbatore, one may see this gorgeous town away which is far from the hustle-bustle of the industrial metropolitan areas nearby. Early metropolitan area organizing in New Place, like comparable neighborhood actions around the nation, verified to become a treatment that existed mostly on paper-on the web pages of a pretty reasonable file and in legal actions as well as charter modifications. Naturally, Rome is likewise thus huge, and also loaded with a lot of destinations to see, that a check out to the urban area needs mindful organizing - and the understanding that you will just have to return down the road to find more of what you are going to have missed out on the very first time. It will be actually the most effective opportunity to walk, click on snaps and also witness the neighborhood lifestyle by going to Camden Market, Portobello Market, as well as the Blossom Market as each one has its very own specialty. Be sure to see The Lowry craft center, perform some purchasing at Affleck's Royal residence market as well as fill out your time along with a vacation to the club to join Manchester's spirited nightlife.
Attractive, remote and a striking 1,500 m over water level, this town is actually gone to by pretty few tourists. Also throughout opportunities of captivity by their opponents, the Jewish people have loved and also shown obligation to their mommy land.

Zaha Hadid Architects Declare News
ZHA leave Architects Declare
On 3 December 2020, ZHA announced it had chosen to leave Architects Declare.
Below is the firm’s full statement on their withdrawal:
Climate change is a defining challenge of our generation and Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) is committed to developing solutions.
We embed sustainability into the design, procurement, construction and operations of the projects we are delivering, and we work hard to build integrated client/contractor/design team relationships that can maximise opportunities to improve systems which prioritize environmental issues and ensure cost-effective sustainability.
This collaborative relationship between the client, operator, design team and contractor, together with the development of an overall understanding of the sustainability agenda across the entire project team, is critical to delivering the most sustainable construction and operations of a building throughout its lifetime.
Recent ZHA projects have achieved exemplary accreditation. The KAPSARC research centre in Riyadh and the Generali Tower in Milan were awarded LEED Platinum. The Nürnberg Messe Convention Hall received its Platinum rating from the German Society for Sustainable Building (DGNB) and Leeza SOHO in Beijing obtained LEED Gold.
ZHA is now delivering architecture around the world targeting the highest sustainability certification, including projects in the Middle East, Europe and the Americas planning carbon neutral operations.
We continue this progress; marrying advances in sustainable design and operational systems with innovations in ecologically sound materials and construction practices. We do not look only at the disparate parts, but work to understand them as a whole to deliver effective solutions.
Regrettably we are withdrawing from Architects Declare. As a founding signatory, we agreed to continue and accelerate our work towards progressive change in our built environment. However today we need to recognise that we have a significant difference of opinion with the Architects Declare steering group on how positive change can be delivered.
For us how change is delivered requires discussion, cooperation and collaboration, and this must be debated without condemnation.
Architects Declare’s steering group has unilaterally decided on its own precise and absolute interpretation of the coalition’s commitments. By doing so, we believe they are setting the profession up for failure. Redefining these commitments without engagement undermines the coalition and trust.
We saw Architects Declare as a broad church to raise consciousness on the issues; enabling architectural practices of all sizes to build a coalition for change and help each other find solutions. We need to be progressive, but we see no advantage in positioning the profession to fail. In fact, it would be a historic mistake.

Patent Watch: Two companies offer wireless shifter adapters as SRAM application touts similar technology
Editor’s note: A version of this article ran in the November issue of BRAIN. It has been updated with more information about the two brands that sell products with similar features as the SRAM patent.
By Alan Coté
SRAM’s recent patent application for an “Electronic Cable Puller” points to the increased integration of e-bikes. But it also might lead to some conflict between SRAM and two U.S. companies that already offer products using technologies similar to what SRAM describes in the application.
With e-bikes surging in popularity both in the U.S. and globally, manufacturers have been considering what else a large-capacity e-bike battery could power in addition to propelling a bike. Headlights, taillights, and integrated computer displays are obvious accessories to draw juice from an e-bike battery. Magura has shown heated grips that use e-bike battery power, and Fox’s E-Live Valve uses the bike battery to control suspension.
But SRAM has its eyes on derailleurs. SRAM’s U.S. patent application for an “Electronic Cable Puller” was published on Sept 10, with Geoff Nichols as the sole inventor. It describes a wireless shifting system that’s centered around an electronic cable puller, which mounts to the frame. The cable puller is powered by an e-bike’s battery.
With SRAM’s existing eTap electronic shifting system, a handlebar-mounted switch communicates wirelessly with a bike’s derailleurs. An eTap derailleur has no cable, and uses an internal motor to actuate shifts, powered by a small removable rechargeable battery. With all that technology bundled into a small package, an eTap rear derailleur is among the priciest rear derailleurs sold, starting at $490 MSRP for the Force model. The battery lasts for about 60 hours of riding between charges.
This design in the application borrows the concept of a handlebar switch that transmits a wireless signal to initiate a shift. But instead of that signal being received by an electronic rear derailleur, it’s received by a frame-mounted box attached to the right chainstay (or another place on the frame). The box includes a wireless receiver, of course, along with a motorized cable-pulling apparatus. The arrangement therefore allows use of a conventional cable-actuated rear derailleur – it’s like a robotic hand that operates a traditional derailleur.
The patent application describes an electric cable puller that “… may be powered by the centralized battery of an electric power-assist bike (“e-bike”) and may not be internally powered.” (emphasis on "not" added). Why not include a removable battery with the cable puller? There are numerous reasons why SRAM may have narrowed the patent application to exclude that arrangement, though as is common practice SRAM declined to comment on this patent application.
One reason may be that SRAM does not want to develop products that risk cannibalizing its own eTap product line – though a chainstay-mounted box is far less sleek than a rear derailleur with integrated electronics.
Another hurdle may be related to intellectual property, as there’s prior art around a wireless electronic cable puller.
X-Shifter (founded by Paul Gallagher, a former SRAM engineer) launched with a Kickstarter campaign in 2016 and appears to still be on the market. Smart Cycling, a Taichung, Taiwan, company, was assisting the company with manufacturing and distribution. BRAIN spoke with Gallagher and Smart Cycling’s Jerry Huang about the product at the 2019 Taipei Cycle show.
And Archer Components offers a similar system. Archer’s Brandon Rodgers was granted a patent on the technology in December 2019. Archer has sold about 3,500 of its D1X systems since beginning production in 2018.
Archer’s Devin Carlson said interest in the D1X continues to build. The D1X is customizable for the number of sprocket teeth and spacing, so with this year’s industry shortage of repair parts, it comes in handy for shops and consumers trying to get old bikes operating again — if you can't find a shifter to mate with the bike's rear derailleur, a system like the D1X might be just the thing. And it remains an upgrade item for riders who want wireless shifting but are wary of putting an expensive electronic rear derailleur on a mountain bike, Carlson said.
Carlson said he has had no contact with SRAM and a SRAM spokesman declined to comment on the similarity between the Archer D1X and the X-shifter products and SRAM's patent application.
Carlson said Archer also has been developing a version of its product that runs off an e-bike battery and has built prototypes. “The great thing about using the e-bike battery is you have infinite power supply. With 12 volts available our e-bike-powered shifter is badass. It just shifts so much faster (than with smaller battery),” he told BRAIN.
SRAM’s focus on e-bike battery power for the design speaks to the potential market. Electronic shifting is undeniably smooth, fast, and user-friendly. A very short run of cable may reduce the frequent cable tension adjustments needed by conventional derailleurs. An e-bike typically has its battery charged routinely, and this new design insures there’s no concern about having to keep track of topping-up a separate derailleur-specific battery. Such an arrangement would be especially suited to fleet and rental bikes, which are often used by new or infrequent riders who find electronic shifting simple to use.
The shift buttons do require a battery to transmit their wireless signal, but the battery life is so long – about 1,500 hours on SRAM’s eTap system – as to not be an issue. Rear derailleurs are also vulnerable to damage, and with this design only a conventional lower priced unit is exposed, with the costly electronics and motor separate and tucked away.
SRAM’s patent application only recites a cable puller for rear derailleurs, with SRAM known for championing 1x drivetrains. But the same idea of tapping-into an e-bike battery for power could be employed for other components as well. Expect to see more in the coming years — from alternative drivetrain technologies to dropper posts to dashboards.

Naval Power: Small Ships for Big Targets
The Republic of China Navy (RoCN) has transitioned from the most neglected arm of the Taiwanese military to the most important. The RoCN alone can defeat an invasion fleet at sea. Sinking amphibious transports not only takes a large ground force out of action, but also permanently degrades the enemy’s amphibious capability.
Taiwanese Navy Destroyer Suao
The RoCN has 26 large surface combatants, all of which have a potent anti-ship capability. The largest ships in the fleet are the four Kee Lung-class guided-missile destroyers, formerly the U.S. Kidd class destoyers.
At about 10,000 tons, each destroyer sports two Mk.26 twin surface to air missile (SAM) launch systems armed with Standard SM-2 Block IIIA surface-to-air missiles, two Mk. 45 127mm guns, four Harpoon Block II anti-ship missiles and has a helicopter flight deck and hangar.
The remaining large surface vessels are a mixture of American and French designs.
Cheng Kung class frigates
The eight Cheung Kung class of guided missile frigates are a modified version of the long-hull Oliver Hazard Perry class. The class is armed with a Mk.13 missile launcher forward, capable of firing SM-1MR surface-to-air and Harpoon anti-ship missiles, and a 76mm Oto Melara gun amidships.
The frigates also carry 8 Hsiung Feng II anti-ship missiles, giving the small ships a powerful anti-ship capability. Each carries an S-70 Thunderhawk helicopter, an export variant of the SH-60B Seahawk.
Taiwan has eight frigates of the former U.S. Knox class destroyers, now the Chi Yang class. The ships mount the original armament of one Mk. 45 127mm gun and one ASROC launcher. The Chi Yang class has also been retrofitted with ten SM-1MR surface-to-air missiles in external canister launchers. The ships each carry one MD-500 ASW helicopter.
Rounding out large surface combatants are the Kang Ting-class frigates. A modification of the La Fayette design, the Kang Ting frigates mount one 76mm gun and a navalized Chaparral missile launcher for air defense. 8 Hsiung Feng anti-ship missiles are carried, and typically one S-70 Thunderhawk helicopter.
Taiwan has made a significant investment in small, fast missile patrol craft designed to take on much larger Chinese surface and amphibious ships. Twelve missile patrol combatants of the Jing Chiang class were built — each 680 tons fully loaded — with a 76mm gun and mine-laying racks.
There are also 34 smaller ships of the 150 ton Kung Hua VI project. Ships of both classes are each equipped with 4 Hsiung Feng anti-ship missiles. This diminutive fleet collectively weighs just over 13,000 tons but altogether packs a total of 184 anti-ship missiles.
The RoCN’s submarine fleet consists of just four aging submarines. Two are of the U.S. Navy Tench class, Hai Shih and Hai Pao. Both were launched toward the end of the World War II and are used as training vessels. The other two submarines, Hai Hung and Hai Hu, are a Dutch design of mid-1980s vintage. Displacing 2,600 tons submerged, they were upgraded in 2013 with Harpoon II anti-ship missiles.
Taiwan has a modest-sized amphibious force, designed to move army and marine units by sea during wartime. The force is built around one dock landing ship formerly of the Anchorage class, Shui Hai, and two tank landing ships formerly of the Newport News class, Chung Ho and Chung Ping. The force can land up to four companies of AAV-7A1 amphibious assault vehicles or main battle tanks, and two companies of infantry.
Air Power Designed to Withstand a Siege
The Republic of China Air Force (RoCAF) is optimized for air superiority. China could not successfully invade without seizing air superiority, and as a result Taiwan’s air force is seen as one of the primary deterrents to Chinese military action.
Taiwan’s fighters were state of the art in the 1990s, when most of the aircraft were purchased. Time and China’s air power buildup have eroded their technological edge — opening up the possibility that China could successfully contest air superiority over the island.
The RoCAF currently has 146 F-16 A/B Block 20 multirole fighters, armed with AIM-120 AMRAAM air-to-air missiles. It also operates 55 Mirage 2000 multirole fighters, armed with Magic air-to-air missiles. Rounding out Taiwan’s main fighter inventory are 126 Ching-kuo Indigenous Fighters, armed with locally developed Sky Sword II air-to-air missiles.
The Combat Avionics Programmed Extension Suite program, meant to upgrade both U.S. and Taiwanese F-16s with advanced AESA radar systems, is going forward without U.S. Air Force participation, which was pulled this month at the last minute. Washington has reassured Taiwan that the cost differential will be minimal and the upgrade program can proceed.
Taiwan’s fleet of support aircraft includes six E-2 Hawkeye airborne early-warning and air-control aircraft upgraded with APS-145 radars. One C-130 Hercules transport was converted into to an electronic warfare platform, while two RoCN S-70 Thunderhawks have been configured as signals intelligence collection aircraft.
P-3C Orion
Taiwan has for a long time lacked a strong maritime patrol aircraft force. Under the navy, a modest force of 20 S-2 Trackers in the 1990s is being replaced by a dozen P-3C Orions. The first Orion arrived in November 2013 and the last is scheduled to arrive in 2015.
In the event of war, the RoCAF’s air bases will come under heavy air attack, both by aircraft and missiles. China’s Second Artillery Corps has an estimated 1,500 conventionally armed short range ballistic missiles, many of which will likely be used in the counter-air role. Estimates are that it would take 50 direct hits to close a RoCAF air base to air operations.
The RoCAF is prepared to keep air bases open while under attack. Taiwan has the Rapid Runway Repair System, used by the U.S. Air Force, to repair runways damaged by enemy attack. The RoCAF also has the Portarrest P-IV mobile aircraft arresting system for landing aircraft on damaged runways.
The RoCAF has invested considerable resources in hardening base facilities. Chiashan Air Base, on the island’s eastern coast, includes a hollowed-out mountain that serves as a refuge for up to 100 Mirage 2000-5 and F-16 fighters. Two airfields serving the base are both at least 7,500 feet long. Chiashan is also a designated command post for counterattacks mounted by Taiwan against invading forces.
A second facility buried inside a mountain is Hengshan Command Center. Located on the outskirts of Taipei, Hengshan was completed in 1982 and serves as the national military command center in both peace and war. In wartime, it serves as the seat of Taiwan’s civilian government.
The air force also operates the nationwide air defense network, with 11 early warning sites overall. Main air defense is provided by Taiwan’s indigenously produced Tien Kung II surface-to-air missiles. Radar guided, Tien Kung II has a range of 125 miles and is deployed at six bases, four on Taiwan and two on nearby island groups.
Each base includes 80 missiles in underground silos and two target illumination radars. A range of 125 miles means Tien Kung missiles could theoretically engage targets over the mainland.
PAC-2 Patriot missile battery
Taiwan also has seven Patriot missile batteries, which are converting from PAC-2 to PAC-3 status. Patriot missiles are concentrated around the cities of Taipei, Greater Taichung and Greater Kaohsiung.
Future Trends: Missiles, Submarines And Volunteers
Smaller defense budgets and an overwhelming Chinese conventional force have moved Taiwan toward asymmetrical systems and an anti-access, area denial capability all its own. Rather than matching China ship for ship and plane for plane, Taiwan is fielding systems that imperil China’s ability to operate in the Taiwan Strait.
Model of Hsun Hai missile corvette
One such example is the Hsun Hai, or “Swift Sea” program of small missile corvettes. The catamarans are capable of 38 knots and designed to have a minimal radar signature.
Armed with eight Hsiung Feng II and Hsuing Feng III anti-ship missiles, the corvettes have been dubbed “carrier killers” by the Taiwanese media. The first, Tuo River, was commissioned on March 14 and expected to be operational by mid-2015. Twelve ships are planned.
Submarines stand to be a key pillar of Taiwan’s asymmetrical approach. “After Taiwan has lost air and sea control, it’s the subs that will still be able to attack groups of amphibious landing aircraft,” Wang Jyh-perng, RoCN reserve captain told the Asia Times in 2011. However, no diesel-electric submarine builder — facing pressure from China — will sell Taiwan new submarines.
A 1980s vintage Hai-lang submarine, built in the Netherlands and operated by the Republic of China Navy. ROC Photo
In January, Taiwan’s navy headquarters announced a 15-year upgrade plan for naval forces. Under the plan, a local shipbuilder has been directed to determine the feasibility of locally built submarines by June of this year. The project will not likely to succeed without outside help.
Another trend is the planned transition from a conscript military to an all-volunteer military. Social trends are undermining the existing draft system, as the system is growing unpopular and demographics are lowering the pool of potential manpower. Yet all-volunteer forces have dramatically higher personnel costs, and Taiwan’s defense budget has remained low. If Taiwan cannot offset these costs with additional defense spending, it seems inevitable the military will face a new round of reductions.
The Way Forward
Taiwan is playing a difficult hand. Seceding from the mainland outright would likely invoke a military response and anger its only ally, the United States. Matching China militarily is no longer possible, as China outspends Taiwan in defense 13 to 1. A hardline stance is increasingly unviable.
On the other hand, strong ideological differences still make reunification unpalatable to many Taiwanese. Taiwan is taking the middle ground of trying to maintain its economic position and higher standard of living relative to China, while deterring invasion by tailoring its military to specific threats. Taiwan may not be spending as much on defense as it should, but it has accepted the strategic realities, and that may well be the more difficult of the two
