An article published in "The Astrophysical Journal Letters" reports a study on the exoplanet GJ 367 b, or Gliese 367 b, formally known by the name Tahay, which concludes that its core is composed almost entirely of iron for a density that is almost twice the Earth's. La Dra. Irma Fuentes Morales, académica de la Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Exactas de la Universidad de Playa Ancha, docente de Pedagogía en Física, junto a investigadores del Núcleo Milenio sobre Exoplanetas Jóvenes y sus Lunas (YEMS), el cual también integra, y científicos del Centro Interdisciplinario de Astrofísica CIRAS de la Universidad Santiago de Chile, ganaron el concurso “Name ExoWorld, organizado por la Unión Astronómica Internacional, por medio del cual con nombres de flores endémicas de Chile se denominará a un planeta que está fuera del sistema solar y su estrella anfitriona.

Se trata del planeta GJ 367 b, descubierto en 2021, ubicado a 31 años luz de distancia, que llevará por nombre “Tahay”, como la flor de color violeta azulado que habita entre la cuarta y séptima regiones de Chile, y que florece entre 7 y 8 horas al año, similar a las 7,7 horas que demora el exoplaneta en dar una vuelta en torno a su estrella. Mientras que, su estrella anfitriona se llamará “Añañuca”, por el color rojo de esta flor que crece entre las regiones de Coquimbo y del Maule.

El concurso de la Unión Astronómica Internacional recibió 603 postulaciones de 91 países, y se seleccionaron 20 nombres de distintas partes del mundo.

La académica UPLA y astrofísica explica que la decisión por estos dos nombres fue por votación popular.

“Estos nombres fueron propuestos por Mariana Durán y compitieron junto a otro par de nombres de flora nativa y de volcanes chilenos. Sin embargo, la gente que votó decidió por este sistema, debido a que sus características calzan súper bien con las características del sistema extrasolar, lo que permitió que la Unión Internacional de Astronomía decidiera por estos nombres, debido a esas mismas razones, ya que el planeta Tahay da una vuelta en torno a su estrella cada 7 horas, lo mismo que dura la floración anual de la flor Tahay, y Añañuca, por el mismo color rojo intenso que tiene la estrella GJ 367”, sostuvo la investigadora postdoctoral del Núcleo Milenio YEMS, quien fue parte del equipo que lideró el envío de la propuesta. 

Vitrina para la conservación

La importancia de este logro, afirma la Dra. Fuentes, radica en que, desde ahora y para las generaciones futuras, el sistema extrasolar GJ 367 será reconocido con nombres de flores que habitan únicamente en nuestro país. Cada vez que se realice un descubrimiento en ese sistema extrasolar, la comunidad científica se referirá a él con los nombres propuestos, implicando un doble reconocimiento.

“Por un lado, reconocimiento de las características propias del sistema extrasolar, el cual es bastante único, ya que contiene a uno de los planetas extrasolares más pequeños y más veloces de los que se han detectado en la actualidad, por lo que es un sistema muy interesante para la comunidad científica. Por otro lado, se convierte en una vitrina para la conservación de las especies de flores chilenas, porque al ser un sistema tan peculiar, será constantemente nombrado en todo el mundo, permitiendo que mucha gente lo conozca o se pueda interesar por la flora nativa de Chile”, agrega.

Los sistemas que se nombraron son de especial interés, ya que serán parte de los primeros exoplanetas que observará el Telescopio Espacial James Webb (JWST, su sigla en inglés) dirigido por la NASA y lanzado en 2021, para estudiar estrellas y planetas distantes.

It's an Ultrashort Period (USP) planet that orbits its star in only 7.7 hours. There are almost 200 other USP planets in our 5,000+ catalog of exoplanets, so Gliese 367 b isn't unique in that regard. But it's an outlier in another way: it's also an ultra-dense planet—almost twice as dense as Earth. That means it has to be almost pure iron.
