Half an hour after I take my night meds, my wife brings me a cimetidine, some plantain chips, and a cup of water. She does this because my legs are wobbly from taking the night meds and because the Tagamet will interfere with the absorption of the other meds if I don't wait.
She gave me the water first. I asked for the Tagamet after I took a few sips.
"I gave them to you," she said.
I shook my mind for the memory but could not rouse it. After the usual litany of Are you sure, I resigned myself to assuming that I was losing my mind and began on the plantain chips.
I dumped the last of the small bowl into my mouth. I crunched down on something bitter. A broken tooth! I feared. I took the hard piece out of my mouth and examined it by the table's dim light. The rugged shape had a rounded edge to it.
I had found my pill. She had dropped it in the bowl.

The pharmacologist James Whyte Black was born on 14th June 1924, in Uddingston, Lanarkshire.
During his lifetime James Black was involved in the development of two different treatments, Propranolol, (Inderal) a beta blocker used to treat high blood pressure and Cimetidine ( Tagamet), used for heartburn.
He attended Beath High School where his teacher persuaded him to take the competitive entrance examination for St Andrews University. An intelligent boy, he managed to earn the Patrick Hamilton Residential Scholarship. Going on to study medicine but decided against a career as a doctor instead going on to lecture at University College before moving to Singapore and then back to University of Glasgow
It was in Glasgow Blacko built a research laboratory providing the most advanced cardiovascular technology and developed an interest in the effects of the hormone adrenaline on the human heart.
He was persuaded to leave the academic life and joined ICI Pharmaceuticals in 1958. His years with the company led to some extraordinary discoveries in medical science. He collaborated with scientists in his team to develop propranolol which is a beta blocker used for the treatment of heart disease. The discovery of propranolol is considered one of the greatest breakthroughs in the treatment of heart disease.
Along with the development of propranolol, Black was also working on developing a similar method of treatment for stomach ulcers. However, ICI was not interested in pursuing research in this direction. Thus, Black resigned in 1964 and joined Smith, Kline and French, it was with them he developed a new drug called cimetidine, now you might not have heard of it by that name but the company branded it as Tagamet in 1975, used in the treatment of heartburn and peptic ulcers it became the world’s largest-selling prescription drug.
Black was knighted in 1981 and was awarded the 1988 Nobel Prize in Medicine along with Gertrude B. Elion and George H. Hitchings “for their discoveries of important principles for drug treatment.”
In 2006 Dundee University honoured him with the opening of the Sir James Black Centre, the following year King’s College London followed Dundee by also opening a centre named after Black.
Black died, aged 85, on the morning of 22nd March 2010 after a long illness and is buried at the Ardclach cemetery near Nairn. Upon hearing of Black’s death, Professor Pete Downes, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Dundee said Black “was a great scientist, but he was also a great man to know” while the BBC said he was “hailed as one of the great Scottish scientists of the 20th Century”. He was described by The Daily Telegraph as the man who earned the most for the pharmaceutical industry through his drug development, though he received little personal financial gain from his work.

I’ve been having tummy problems for weeks. WEEKS. I know if I go to a doctor there will be “nothing wrong” but nothing is working. Stomach acid so bad that I throw up almost immediately after eating. I just started Prilosec, but Tagamet hasn’t been working, and bread has stopped working too. I don’t even know what to do. I’ve been up nights and nights in a row unable to sleep because of the acid. Bad sleep after bad sleep. And I continue to eat acidity foods. I can’t stop. I just want a supplement so I CAN eat these comfort foods.
I can’t not eat my comfort foods, anything but them and I’ll explode. But my comfort foods are ALL acidity.

I wish I had more Lupus friends bc since I’ve been taking sun protection measures I haven’t had a tummy ache or car sickness. I was literally taking three Tagamet 2-3 times a day for months and I’ve had motion sickness every car ride for my entire life and now it’s just gone?
It’s only been a few days but if any Lupus buddies could tell me if cutting out UV exposure can have immediate affects like that I would be really grateful 🥲
I’ve also recently started Plaquinel but this wasn’t a gradual improvement. It completely went away as soon as I started doing the whole sunscreen/UPF clothing routine. But idk if it’s just a coincidence, placebo effect or if the sun really was making me that sick all the time.

Dental assistant here, I have a few things to add.
- Do NOT chew Tums all the time to treat your stomach acid problems. Tums have a ton of sugar in them and stick to the tops of your teeth. We’ve had a couple patients end up with really bad cavities from using Tums long term. You should use something like Tagamet instead. (As long as you can swallow pills.)
- High-fluoride prescription toothpaste is probably the best thing anyone can use to protect their teeth, I use one called Fluorimax. If you have an especially sensitive mouth, you might be better off with a Xylitol-based toothpaste like Squigle.
- NEVER USE WHITENING TOOTHPASTE!!! It is EVIL stuff that will make your teeth extremely sensitive!! Basically, your teeth are porous, and whitening toothpaste makes the tiny tubes in your teeth open wider. Then whenever you eat something cold, the sensation goes RIGHT to the nerves inside your teeth and causes some pretty terrible pain.
The problem with whitening toothpaste is that the toothpaste companies want you to buy it because they get more of a profit that way. Stores will place the whitening toothpastes at eye-level shelves so you’ll be more likely to see it first and buy it, usually without even realizing that it’s whitening toothpaste. In fact, if you look closely at OP’s picture, you’ll even see that that’s whitening toothpaste! There’s a tiny little “gentle whitening” blurb that’s real easy to miss. You’ll have to double-check the box and make sure that there’s no whitening ingredients, just regular toothpaste. Generally stores will stock the normal toothpaste on the bottom shelf.
(There is no way to have ‘gentle’ whitening, either. It’s an oxymoron. >:C)
- I’m seconding what OP says about non-alcoholic mouthwash. Alcoholic mouthwash is way too caustic and burns the inside of your mouth. There have been studies correlating heavy mouthwash use to an increase in the rates of oral cancers.
- Finally - if you can tolerate the sensation, you might want to look into a nighttime biteguard if you grind your teeth at night. You don’t have control over your muscles when you sleep, and if you constantly wake up with headaches, chances are you’re grinding. The mechanical stress to your teeth from grinding them is even worse than a cavity - you can split your tooth right down the middle, and there’s nothing left to do but extract it.
Okay listen I have another disability related thing that’s important!!
If you have any disabilities linked to tooth decay/erosion, through direct cause or secondary symptom, it is vital that you get one or both of the following items: Sensodyne toothpaste and enamel repair mouthwash
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This includes health conditions such as acid reflux, diabetes, thyroid conditions, fibromyalgia, chronic pain & mental illnesses such as depression that create poor hygiene routines, sensory issue disorders like autism and ADHD, and any health condition that causes frequent vomiting / increased stomach acid, including eating disorders and migraines.
All of these disabilities will erode the enamel of your teeth, not only opening you up to cavities but making it very easy to chip your teeth from such simple things as biting the wrong way on the tines of a fork. (I’ve chipped my teeth at least 4 times this way).
The toothpaste on the left here (sensodyne pronamel) is gentle on your teeth, won’t cause painful sensations from any extreme mint flavor, and will even protect your gums if they’re sensitive from any of these conditions.
The mouthwash on the right (Crest enamel repair) will, as it says, repair your enamel — which is marvelous, because the technology to repair your enamel at all is relatively very new to society! — but it is most importantly non-alcoholic. Meaning that it works well as a once-a-day rinse without any of the burning sensations of antiseptics that typically discourage people with sensory issues from taking care of their teeth.
I know remembering to do these things every day can feel like a lot when you’re sick and exhausted, but I promise a collective three minutes out of every day is going to save you an incredible amount of pain and money in the future. If your teeth are susceptible enough to rot, you can actually die from infection. And as they say, with how little insurance actually covers dental —
Not brushing your teeth??
In THIS economy???

Famotidine Pepcid For Dogs? What is that?
The generic name for the drug used to treat esophagitis, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and excessive stomach acid production is famotidine, also referred to as famotidine hydrochloride or famotidine HCl (GERD). It is one of the most often prescribed medications in the United States right now and is obtainable both on prescription and over-the-counter. Its brand names are “Pepcid®” and “Pepcid AC®,” respectively.
What Is Famotidine (Pepcid) Quick Facts?
Famotidine is a histamine receptor-2 (H-2) antagonist and an anti-ulcer medication. Gastric acid is secreted when H-2 receptors (targets) on the cell membranes of stomach cells are stimulated. The medication reduces the formation of stomach acid, giving the ulcer time to heal. Ranitidine (Zantac®), nizatidine (Axid®), and cimetidine (Tagamet®) are additional medications with comparable effects.
Famotidine works on the chemoreceptor trigger zone to reduce nausea in dogs.
Pets with stomach ulcers, esophagitis, gastric reflux, esophageal reflux, Helicobacter infections, and/or vomiting can be treated with Pepcid.
Famotidine may have a decreased effect when used regularly and continuously for an extended period of time, according to studies (more than 14 days). Due to this, it could be advised to take the medication twice daily.
Brand Names for Famotidine
Only using this medication for human use is registered and FDA approved.
Pepcid (Merck), Pepcid AC, and other brand names such as Act, Dyspep HB, Pepzan, Arfam, Pamacid, Peptris, Famotren, Famistine, and Fluxid are examples of human formulations.
Formulations for animals: none
Is Pepcid Routinely Prescribed to Pets?
Although the FDA has not approved this medication for use in animals, veterinarians may legally administer it as an off-label medication. Although famotidine is sold over the counter, it should only be used under a veterinarian’s supervision and direction. One of the 15 human over-the-counter medications that are deemed safe for dogs is Pepcid.
Famotidine Uses in Dogs
There are several uses for famotidine in humans, canines, felines, and other pets.
Gastric and intestinal ulcers or erosions are treated and prevented with the help of famotidine (shallow depressions in the stomach lining).
Tumblr media
Treatment for stomach irritation brought on by kidney disease or kidney failure may involve the use of famotidine.
Mast cell tumors in dogs can create a lot of histamine, so famotidine or a comparable medication may be used to treat them.
Famotidine is sometimes administered to dogs that have diminished appetites and is used to treat a variety of causes of nausea in dogs. For more information on feeding a dog that won’t eat, click here.
Famotidine inhibits histamine, therefore it is occasionally used in conjunction with other drugs to treat allergic reactions, such as steroids or diphenhydramine (Benadryl®).
Numerous conditions that result in stomach issues, ulcers, or illnesses that induce nausea and vomiting are treated with famotidine. Examples include acute pancreatitis, inflammatory bowel illness, and infections like helicobacter or PetsCareTip canine parvoviral enteritis.
How Is Famotidine Supplied?
Both prescription and over-the-counter versions of famotidine are offered.
10 mg, 20 mg, and 40 mg tablets.
Oral powder for suspension is supplied at 50 mg/5 ml.
An injectable with a 20 mg/50 mL or 20 mg/2 mL concentration.
Dogs’ Pepcid Dosage
Never provide medication without first talking to your veterinarian. Before taking Pepcid for dogs, be careful to go through the right dosage and other safety measures with your veterinarian. Every 12 to 24 hours, a dose of 0.25 to 0.5 mg per pound (0.5 to 1.0 mg/kg) of famotidine is often administered. When used for longer than 14 straight days, the impact is lessened. Due to this, it could be advised to take the medication twice daily.
The ailment being treated, how the patient reacts to the medication, and if any negative side effects manifest themselves all influence how long the administration will last. Except as recommended by your veterinarian, make sure to finish the prescription. To prevent a sudden relapse, follow the entire treatment schedule even if your pet feels better.
Tablets should be kept at room temperature and away from light. Formulations that are liquids need to be chilled.
Famotidine Pepcid For Dogs and Potential Side Effects
If you see any of the following adverse effects and are worried that your pet may have consumed a hazardous dosage of medication, call your veterinarian right away:
Tumblr media
Difficulty breathing.
Difficulty walking.
Lack of appetite.
Lethargy.
Pale gums.
Vomiting.
To be sure your pet is not exhibiting any of these signs, keep a close eye on them and pay attention to their behavior, urinating, and bowel movements. If you think your pet has swallowed a potentially hazardous amount of famotidine, call your veterinarian right away.
How to Avoid Unintended Exposure to Pepcid
It’s easy for curious animals to get into stuff, and it’s always preferable to avoid poisoning than to deal with it later. To prevent your pets from accidentally consuming a lethal dose of famotidine, take the following precautions:
All drugs should be kept out of pets’ reach.
Be especially careful when handling pill bottles and weekly pill organizers. The containers’ design and the noises they create when shaken can resemble toys, luring animals to play with or chew on them.
Avoid storing medications in plastic bags. Keep your prescription pills safe if you are traveling. Bags are simple to chew through and swallow.
If you have drugs in your purse, make sure to close it, hang it up, or place it somewhere your pet cannot get it.
Encourage visitors to keep their possessions locked up and their prescriptions out of the reach of your pets.
More Resources for Pet Emergency
Call the nearest emergency clinic if your pet ingests Pepcid and you are unable to reach your veterinarian. Calling a pet poison control hotline is an additional choice.
The two most common are:

FAQs About Famotidine for Dogs
What should I do if I forget to provide a famotidine dose?
Famotidine can be administered to your dog as soon as you remember to if a dose is missed. However, if it’s almost time for the next dose, only provide the standard dose rather than doubling it.
What is the most important thing I should know about famotidine?
Pepcid belongs to the “H2 blockers” class of pharmaceuticals, which also includes ranitidine and cimetidine (Tagamet) (Zantac). The amount of stomach acid produced is reduced with famotidine. The medicine is generally safe, and overdoses are rare. Pets include dogs, cats, and other animals are frequently prescribed Pepcid.
Before giving famotidine to my pet, what should I go over with my vet?
Before giving your pet any medication, you should talk to your veterinarian about the underlying problem. For instance, if your dog isn’t eating, you should talk about possible causes and come up with a solution. Additional symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, blood in the vomit or stool, and any other anomalies should be kept an eye out for.
Are there alternatives to famotidine?
Famotidine is a member of the “H2 blockers” class of drugs. Cimetidine and ranitidine are two further medications in this class that can also be used in dogs. Alternative medications with better stomach acid suppression include omeprazole, also marketed as Prilosec®. Treatment options for vomiting in dogs, such as cerenia, may be suggested based on their clinical symptoms.
Can you buy famotidine over-the-counter?
Famotidine is available over the counter in several sizes (10 mg is the most common).
What are contraindications to giving famotidine?
Use of famotidine in canines with renal and liver disorders should be cautious. Toxicity is a possibility because these organs process it. Having said that, famotidine is frequently advised, though some dogs may only need to take it occasionally or at a reduced dose.
Is it necessary to give Famotidine Pepcid For Dogs?
Famotidine is best administered without food and on an empty stomach.
What drugs interact with famotidine?
There are few medication interactions with famotidine. The pH change can, however, affect the absorption of other orally taken drugs because famotidine’s main action is to reduce gastric acid. Iron supplements and antifungal medications like itraconazole, ketoconazole, and fluconazole are among these medications.
To maximize famotidine absorption, cephalosporin antibiotics like cephalexin or cefpodoxime should ideally be administered two hours prior to or after. It’s normally advised to wait one hour between oral doses of different medications. The absorption of famotidine can be reduced by several antacids.
What is the difference between famotidine (Pepcid) and ranitidine (Zantac)?
Ranitidine (Zantac) and famotidine (Pepcid) are both members of the group of medications known as H2 receptor antagonists that inhibit histamine.

Cruz v. CA, 346 Phil. 872
ART. 221
FACTS: Lydia Umali was examined by Dr. Cruz who found a myoma [benign tumor] in her uterus, and scheduled her for a hysterectomy operation [removal of uterus] on 23 Mar 1991. On March 22, Rowena Umali accompanied her mother to the hospital and spent the night there, for the operation was to be conducted on the following day. Rowena noticed that the clinic was untidy, so she tried to persuade her mother not to proceed with the operation. On the day of the operation, Rowena asked Dr. Cruz if the operation could be postponed. Because of this, Dr. Cruz called Lydia in her office. Consequently, Lydia informed Rowena that the operation must go on as scheduled.
While Lydia’s relatives were waiting, Dr. Ercillo (anesthesiologist) told them to buy tagamet ampules, and Rowena’s sister went out to buy some. An hour later, Dr. Ercillo asked them to buy blood for Lydia, so they did. A few hours later, the operation was finished. However, Dr. Cruz asked again the family to buy additional blood, but there was no more type A blood available in the blood bank. A person arrived to donate blood which was later transfused to Lydia. Rowena noticed that her mother was gasping for breath–apparently, the oxygen supply had run out, so the family went out to buy oxygen. Later in the evening, she went into shock and her blood pressure dropped. She was then transferred to another hospital so she could be connected to a respirator and further examined. However, this transfer was without the consent of the relatives, who only found out about it when an ambulance came to take Lydia to the other hospital.
In the new hospital, she was re-operated upon by Dr. Cruz and Dr. Ercillo because blood was oozing out from her incision. They summoned Dr. Angeles, Ob-Gyne head of the new hospital, but when he arrived, Lydia was already in shock and possibly dead (BP: 0/0). Dr. Angeles told Drs. Cruz and Ercillo that there was nothing he could do. Lydia died while Dr. Cruz was closing her abdominal wall. Immediate cause of death is shock; disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) as antecedent cause.
Dr. Cruz and Dr. Ercillo were charged with reckless imprudence and negligence resulting in homicide of Lydia Umali. The Municipal Trial Court in Cities (MTCC) found Dr. Ercillo not guilty for insufficiency of evidence against her, but held Dr. Cruz responsible for Umali’s death. RTC and CA affirmed MTCC.
Manifestation of negligence:
1. untidiness of clinic
2. lack of provision of supplies
3. the fact that the transfer was needed meant that there was something wrong in the way Dr. Cruz conducted operation
4. no showing that pre-surgery procedure (clearance, blood typing/tests) was conducted
ISSUE: WON the circumstances are sufficient to sustain a judgment of conviction against Dr. Cruz for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide.
RULLING: NO. DR. CRUZ IS ACQUITTED, BUT SHE IS STILL CIVILLY LIABLE (50K civil liability; 100k moral damages, 50k exemplary damages).
Elements of reckless imprudence
1. Offender does / fails to do an act
2. Doing / failure to do act is voluntary
3. Without malice
4. Material damage results from reckless imprudence
5. There is inexcusable lack of precaution, taking into consideration offender’s employment, degree of intelligence, physical condition, other circumstances re: persons, time, place
Burden of establishing medical negligence on plaintiff. Plaintiff has the burden to establish this, and for a reasonable conclusion of negligence, there must be proof of breach of duty on the part of the surgeon, as well as a causal connection of such breach and the resulting death of patient. Negligence cannot create a right of action unless it is the proximate cause of the injury complained of (Chan Lugay v. St. Luke’s Hospital, Inc.). In this case, no cogent proof exists that the circumstances caused Lydia’s death, so the 4th element of reckless imprudence is missing.
The testimonies of the doctors presented by the prosecution establish hemorrhage / hemorrhagic shock as the cause of death, which may be caused by several different factors. Autopsy did not reveal any untied cut blood vessel, nor was there a tie of a cut blood vessel that became loose. The findings of the doctors do not preclude the probability that a clotting defect (DIC) caused the hemorrhage and consequently, Lydia’s death.
The Court has no recourse but to rely on the expert testimonies that substantiate Dr. Cruz’ allegation that the cause of Lydia’s death was DIC, which cannot be attributed to Dr. Cruz’ fault or negligence. This probability was unrebutted during trial.

⚠️ TRIGGER WARNING: restricted eating, health flare⚠️
Tumblr media
Everything is flaring today.
My gastroparesis was improving but the increased activity has cut me down to one forced snack a day. no meals. limited fluid intake. The nausea, pain and lack of appetite is really draining me. Physical activity is usually a trigger for my GP so I’m not surprised this has happened. I’m just hoping it will improve soon.
Pain. Lots of pain. Everything hurts. I’ve upped my Ibuprofen frequency & dose but I can’t take much or my stomach will hurt even worse.
Tagamet is my buddy right now and I’m having to take high doses of it, so I think my break from mast cell problems is over 😣

Appointment with Michael Broffman
My appointment with Michael Broffman at the Pine Street Clinic took place this afternoon for about two-and-one-half hours. It’s all about aging. Bladder cancer is a disease in older men (and women). More about this later. Michael said that I needed about 50 grams protein/day with about 2 quarts of water, a minimum of 1000 calories, and a low carbohydrate intake. Some of the protein can be…
