🎄 “Of course mistletoe still counts after Christmas. It’s still mistletoe!”

‘You forgot a decoration, Vi!’ Kit called, stretching so as to reach the little sprig of mistletoe still hanging from the doorway. Why she’d put it there, he still didn’t entirely understand. He was fine with decorations in general, but mistletoe was one of those he didn’t get. If you wanted to kiss someone, you should just ask to do it rather than awkwardly noting that it was “tradition.”

Kit turned, ready to head into the living room so as to throw the plant at his sister, but almost collided with Tae. The other man stumbled backwards a couple of steps, somehow managing not to spill the tea in his hands.

‘Sorry, you go,’ Kit said, motioning him through.

‘You gotta kiss him first.’

Tae’s attention snapped to Gar, but Kit was slower to look at the teenager. The boy sat in the kitchen, stuffing his face with a spoon filled with cereal. Far more cereal than anyone should try putting in their mouth at once.

‘Why?’ Kit asked softly. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to kiss Tae – he did, a fair amount – it was just he didn’t want some kid suggesting it.

‘Mistletoe,’ Gar said, as if that explained everything.

‘But it’s not on the doorframe,’ said Tae, glancing nervously towards Kit. Things were still new between the two of them, and Tae still seemed occasionally uncertain about it all. So long dancing around their feelings, it was strange to have them out in the open.

‘Doesn’t matter.’

‘And it’s not Christmas,’ said Kit, folding his arms across his chest with deliberate care. It didn’t matter that Gar could change shape, that he could best Kit without really trying, he wasn’t nearly as ready to get into scraps over the little things as Kit was. ‘So it doesn’t count anymore.’

‘Of course mistletoe still counts after Christmas,’ Gar said, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. He jumped down off his seat, started walking towards the two of them so they weren’t arguing across the room. ‘It’s still mistletoe!’

‘Wait until you see trees with the pest on,’ Kit noted simply. ‘Would you kiss people under all of them?’

Gar shrugged, but out the corner of Kit’s eye he could see Tae nervously shifting the weight between his feet. The attention was getting to him. He just wanted to go sit somewhere with his drink, not get into a conversation about the ins and outs of this particular tradition.

With great reluctance, Kit forced a smirk onto his lips. Gar just needed to drop this, and without making things more awkward there was only one thing he could do. Kit shifted so he was standing directly in front of Tae. He planted a soft kiss on his cheek before glaring at Gar.

Tae blinked slowly, a flush colouring his cheeks, before he shook his head. He shot Kit a small smile before slipping through the doorway and making his escape.

Kit’s attention turned towards Gar. ‘Stupid traditions.’

Gar shrugged, a smug smile on his lips before he turned his attention back to the bowl of cereal.

Kit heaved a deep sigh, forcing himself not to get into an argument, before heading through the doorway after Tae. He tucked the mistletoe into his back pocket, and just hoped he wouldn’t forget about it.

‘You can turn into a tiger?’ Tae asked, gently catching hold of Garfield’s sleeve. As soon as he had the boy’s attention he dropped the material as if he’d been burnt.

Garfield’s face broke out into a wide smile. ‘Special skill of mine,’ he said, a twinkle of pride behind his eyes. ‘Costs a load in –’

‘Gar!’ called Dick, causing the boy to sigh.

‘Duty calls,’ he said, amusement laced behind his voice. He held out a hand for a high-five, which Tae gave with a smirk tugging at his lips. But it didn’t stop there. There were all kinds of elaborate moments to follow that utterly baffled Tae. He tried to keep up, but he had no idea what he was doing. He was a little grateful when Garfield finally hurried away, if only to save his own dignity.
