Time is ticking down to Tokyo 2020 and field hockey fans have plenty to be excited about. The biggest event on the calendar puts hockey center stage at the greatest sporting event there is and 12 men's and 12 women's teams will battle it out for gold and glory at the Oi Seaside Park in Tokyo.

Who to watch: Argentine double act?

Argentina's men are defending Olympic champions and looked good at the Pan American Games, dismantling Canada in the final 5-2.

And if Los Leones were good, Las Leonas went one better, beating Canada 5-1 in the women's final to book their safe passage to Tokyo.

The women's team has won four Olympic medals including silver at Sydney 2000 and London 2012, how they would love to make it another Argentine double act at the top of both podiums in Tokyo.

Will the Olympic champs make it to Tokyo 2020?

Great Britain won their first-ever hockey gold medal at Rio 2016, defeating the favored Netherlands in the final on penalties after a thrilling 3-3 draw in regulation time.

Fast forward three years to November 2019 and it's possible that the Olympic champions may not make it to Tokyo 2020 to defend their title.

5th in the 2018 Champions Trophy, 6th in the 2018 Women's Hockey World Cup, 8th in the 2019 Pro League, it hasn't been a world-beating form for Team GB since that historic Rio 2016 win.

Britain will have to play Chile in a two-leg qualifier over two days in London, and while the South Americans have never qualified for an Olympics, they looked good in the 2019 Pan American Games, making the semi-final and only losing out to eventual winners Argentina.

The Netherlands on revenge trail?

Four years may have passed, but that Rio 2016 final defeat to Team GB on penalties will still be fresh in their minds.

Ranked No.1 in the world, the Netherlands come in as favorites to the women's tournament having hammered Ireland 6-0 in the final of the 2018 Women's World Cup and emerged victorious in 2019 Euro Hockey Championship too, recording some eye-watering results.

 The Dutch destroyed Russia 14-1 in the preliminary the round ended English hopes in the semi-finals with whopping 8-0 win and defeated Germany 2-0 to lift the Cup.

But they aren't invincible, Spain held them to a 1-1 draw at the Euros - as did Belgium, and Australia handed the Dutch them the only defeat of the 2019 FIH Pro League, edging them 1-0 in Melbourne.

The Netherlands got revenge for that one blot on an otherwise perfect result card though, overcoming the Aussies on penalties (4-3) after a thrilling 2-2 draw in the FIH Pro League final.

There's no doubt that the 'Clockwork Orange' is the team to beat in Olympic 2020.

The Netherlands end Pakistan Olympic return dream

The Netherlands ended Pakistan's Olympic hopes in emphatic fashion in their qualifying play-off, after an exciting 4-4 Game 1, The Netherlands were clinical in Game 2 winning 6-1.

Pakistan men’s team are one of the most decorated hockey nations in the world with three Olympic golds (60, 68 and 84) as well as 17 appearances at the Olympic Games despite their first appearance being in 1948. However, they have fallen on hard times in recent years: Pakistan hasn’t medaled since Barcelona 1992 (bronze) and failed to qualify for Tokyo 2020.

Pakistan will have to build again towards Paris 2024. The Dutch have made at least the semi-finals in every Olympics since Seoul 1988 and have featured at every Olympics except Moscow 1980 since 1960. After that a strong statement in the qualifying play-off against Pakistan, the orange has to be considered contenders.

Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games Hockey schedule

The men's and women's hockey tournament will take place from Saturday 25th July to Friday 7th August at the Oi Seaside Park.

The twelve teams in the men's and women's competition will be divided into two groups of six, with each team playing each other in a round-robin format.

The top four teams from each group advance straight to the quarter-finals.

The two semi-final winners meet for the gold medal match, while the semi-final losers play in the bronze medal match.

The men's bronze and gold medal matches will take place on Thursday, 6th August and the women's on Friday 7th August:

Tokyo 2020 Hockey Venue

Hockey at the Olympics in Japan will take place at the Oi Hockey Stadium which is being purpose-built for the Olympics next to Tokyo bay in the beautiful Oi Central Seaside Park Sports Forest.

Plans are underway for the venue to be used for hockey and as a multi-purpose sports facility with artificial turf ground after the Olympic 2020 Games.
