Cover: Meghan Markle's secret psych analysis
Page 2: Heather Locklear has put on a lot of weight since she got out of rehab last fall -- she looks to be carrying 170 pounds on her five-foot-five frame and she looks to have gained 35 pounds
Page 3: Miranda Lambert has taken another swipe at ex Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani by dissing their upcoming nuptials -- Miranda has been urging mutual friends to skip the wedding and she's got everyone in Nashville and beyond all riled up and either you're Team Miranda or you're Team Blake, and if you're with him you can forget about being friends with her and she's forcing people to choose sides and she'll have no qualms cutting off anyone who attends Blake's wedding
Page 4: Alex Rodriguez struck out with fiancee Jennifer Lopez after she discovered his hot-and-heavy direct messages to a long string of women -- their four-year romance went foul after Southern Charm's Madison LeCroy publicly admitted she'd been in touch with A-Rod and Jennifer found out he'd reached out to other beauties through social media and Jennifer had had enough
* Concerned mom Jennifer Garner is struggling to cement her relationship with daughter Violet now that the 15-year-old is barreling through the turbulent teens -- Jennifer said the heartbreak is just that she's growing up at all and it's heartbreaking for the mom and for the teenager, needing to have that kind of severing of this baby-mama tie
Page 5: Chris Brown's spacey social media posts about aliens have close pals concerned about the R&B crooner, including his once-battered ex Rihanna -- Chris is obsessed with conspiracy theories and all things supernatural
Page 6: Disgraced Felicity Huffman is fuming about scuffling for plum parts while rumors swirl fellow felon Lori Loughlin has already been invited back into her old TV series and Felicity can't understand why she is being forced to go through the whole audition process while Lori seems to be welcomed back with open arms -- though she hates to do it, Felicity feels the only way she can get attention is to do a tell-all interview about her humiliating part in the scandal -- Felicity has scored a part in the ABC pilot Sacramento River Cats, though there is no guarantee the project will make it onto the air, but insiders and fans of the hit Hallmark series When Calls the Heart have all been filling the internet with talk of Lori's rumored return -- Felicity believes the only way to get public sympathy is to spill her guts, even though all she wants is put the scandal far behind her
Page 8: Stressed Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon has been packing on the pounds as his talk show continues to battle with Stephen Colbert's Late Show and Jimmy Kimmel Live in the late-night ratings and Jimmy has been partying and pigging out to find any comfort he can as Tonight continues to trail the field in total viewers and Jimmy is over 200 pounds for the first time in his life and it's because he's overindulging to compensate for the show's struggles and Jimmy and the gym do not mix even though he had a full fitness center installed at his New York apartment years ago
* Debilitated diva Liza Minnelli's 75th birthday party turned into a disaster when her frail physical condition alarmed friends -- celebrity pals also joined a virtual bash for the legend, even though Liza insisted she didn't want a big fuss and Liza's manager threw the small dinner party on her birthday and about eight people, including Joan Collins, attended in person and several other friends, including Barbra Streisand, recorded video messages and performances for Liza but before the party, Liza was in such bad shape she told friends that she didn't want to participate or be seen on camera -- in the end, Liza, who's undergone multiple surgeries and struggled with substance abuse for years, agreed to join the gathering at the L.A. home of her longtime protege Michael Feinstein and Liza sang but she didn't look well and her voice is shot to pieces and she was propped up in a chair and barely moved from it because she can't walk well anymore and during a live chat during the party the hashtag #FreeLiza started to pop up and not everyone meant it as a joke and there's a feeling certain people have taken over her life and longtime friends have been frozen out and they fear she'll never appear in public again and they won't see her again before she dies -- when friends saw the videos the next day they were upset and very worried, saying Liza really appears to have declined
Page 9: Angelina Jolie has fired a shocking new salvo against ex Brad Pitt over custody of their five youngest children and her latest court documents allege domestic violence and even worse, some of the nearly dozen papers Angie just filed offer up a few of the kids to testify against their dad and Angie is now claiming she can offer proof and authority of domestic violence but Brad's lawyers are expected to respond with a vehement denial -- with the newest court filings, all of which are sealed, Angie is determined to get full custody of the kids and Angelina has fought tooth and nail to get what she wants in this divorce and when it comes to her kids she won't back down
Page 10: Hot Shots -- Farrah Abraham in a bikini, 50 Cent chased away his thirst with a drink at an Atlanta eatery, Natasha Lyonne of Russian Doll was on her game while playing chess on the NYC set, Selma Blair met up with a pal in Studio City, Reggie Bush showed he's still in fine form during a Mexican vacay
Page 11: Gwyneth Paltrow isn't above using a little goop to smooth out the age lines -- the lifestyle guru recently admitted to resorting to a teeny drop of Xeomin, which claims to be a uniquely purified choice for frown lines, to help her look less pissed off but she also admitted her history with fillers hasn't always been happy and she had a midlife crisis when she turned 40 and she went to see this doctor and it was a disaster and she was bruised and her forehead was completely frozen and she didn't look like herself at all -- she also admitted she believes there is still a lot of shame around surgery or injectables or fillers and it's like admitting a vulnerability -- she said she thinks aging is hard and when you see your face start to change, you don't necessarily feel your most beautiful, externally, but the irony is it's that time in your life when you actually really like yourself and love yourself
* Wendy Williams' handpicked hunk Mike Esterman has better buckle up because the daytime diva has already mapped out their future, and he's in for a wild ride -- Wendy boasted she chose her Maryland-based beau after receiving hundreds of submissions to her Date Wendy segment, but she's aiming to renovate the contractor and it's all about image, stylists and bodyguards for Wendy right now and she's already got a reality show in the works for them, a TV crew and photographers trailing them everywhere and his-and-her makeovers too -- she's gone from zero to 60 with this guy in a matter of days
Page 12: Straight Shuter gossip column -- Miley Cyrus is going country after her last two albums tanked -- Miley offended her core audience with her outrageous behavior and punk sound and she's signed with a new record label and the plan is to reintroduce her to the country audience that loved her dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, and once loved her -- Miley's behavior has overshadowed her talent for years and her new team will guide Miley back to her roots in the world of country and finding the right sound should be easy but can Miley find the right behavior
* Gayle King owes her glow on CBS This Morning to a new makeup artist and after being tended to by a fill-in makeup artist and told she looked better than ever, Gayle quietly dismissed her longtime makeup man but there's an unspoken code of ethics in the pro makeup world that if you're asked to replace a longtime client's makeup person, the appropriate answer is no
* The Sex and the City reboot isn't all cosmos and roses -- Sarah Jessica Parker was the show's executive producer, giving her much more power than her co-stars, but Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis will also executive produce the reboot and there's already tension -- sharing power is hard for anyone who's been the boss for years and it isn't one big happy family
* Rachel Brosnahan gets some puppy love on the set of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (picture)
Page 13: The knives are out for self-appointed queen bee of The Talk Sharon Osbourne after she was exposed as TV's meanest host -- the salty motormouth has been accused of a barrage of racist and anti-gay zingers, forcing the gabfest to go on hiatus while CBS investigates the claims -- former host Leah Remini claimed Sharon would frequently refer to then-co-host Julie Chen, who is Chinese American, as 'wonton' and 'slanty eyes' and Sharon also reportedly referred to her out lesbian co-host Sara Gilbert as 'p--sy licker' and 'fish eater' -- in a tweet, Holly Robinson Peete implied Sharon's racist comments led to her leaving the show -- Sharon also chased Marie Osmond on the show last fall and tried to take it over after Julie Chen quit in 2018 -- Sharon has denied all claims against her -- Sharon's big personality is central to The Talk, but some of these allegations, although none have yet been proven, are the kind of remarks that could be career-ending
Page 14: Crime
Page 16: Demi Lovato's shocking admission that she continues to puff pot and swill booze after multiple rehab stints and a near-fatal drug overdose has pals and addiction experts convinced the singer is courting disaster -- she dropped the bombshell in a recent interview and claimed indulging in those vices has helped her fend off more serious addictions and the chronic depression that has dogged her entire life -- Demi came very close to dying three years ago after she overdosed on opioids and it triggered three stokes and a heart attack, and a lot of people were terrified she would never recover and her friends are convinced she's put herself right back on the same self-destructive path -- Demi claimed she was sexually assaulted by her dealer on the day of her almost-fatal OD and when her assistant found her unconscious and surrounded by vomit following the wild binge, she was naked and she was blue and she was left for dead and she had unknowingly taken heroin that was laced with the powerful drug fentanyl
Page 17: Devastated Lisa Marie Presley is finding comfort in the arms of her first husband, Danny Keough, after their son Benjamin Keough's suicide -- Danny has given her a shoulder to cry on and he's the only one who can understand the despair she feels after losing Benjamin -- Lisa Marie has been inconsolable since Benjamin died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound and she's moved in with Danny in Woodland Hills, California and she's also struggled with substance abuse and the stress of an ongoing divorce battle from fourth husband Michael Lockwood -- although her marriage to Danny ended in 1994, he's remained close to the family, working as a driver and handyman for their actress daughter, Riley Keough and Riley couldn't be happier that her dad has been so helpful to her mother and it's taking a full team to keep Lisa Marie together and Danny was definitely proven he's still on her team
* The sudden death of Bobby Brown Jr. remains shrouded in mystery as the 28-year-old's autopsy report was placed on a security hold following a request from the LAPD -- the namesake son of Bobby Brown and his ex-girlfriend Kim Ward lived with his famous father in Encino, California, where the singer found him responsive -- Bobby Jr. has been doing drugs with pals and insiders suspected he was deliberately dosed with a fatal cocktail of booze, cocaine and painkillers
Page 18: American Life
Page 19: Tina Turner is using a new documentary about her life as a final farewell to fans after the R&B icon was rocked by a string of physical and mental health woes including the crippling effects of a 2013 stroke -- the eye-opening documentary Tina is a love letter to her millions of supporters and the punctuation mark to a life defined by startling professional success and heartbreaking personal catastrophes -- Tina admitted she's had an abusive life but at a certain stage forgiveness takes over -- in the documentary Tina confessed she suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder and has frightening flashbacks of being savagely beaten throughout her hellish 16-year marriage to the late Ike Turner and Tina's current husband, German music producer Erwin Bach, even compared his spouse to a shell-shocked soldier -- more recently, Tina has been battered by health crises after suffering a stroke in 2013 and being diagnosed with intestinal cancer three years later, mere months before her kidneys failed and Erwin donated one of his own to save her life -- Tina knows the end is near and this film is truly her last encore
Page 20: Match Game -- a round up of male and female celebs who look astonishingly similar, despite their opposite genders -- Sophie Turner and Boy George, Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber, Timothee Chalamet and Natalia Dyer, Tom Cruise and Tig Notaro
Page 21: Melissa McCarthy and Ricky Gervais, Eva Marcille and Terrence Howard, Bret Michaels and Fergie, Josh Hartnett and Clea DuVall
Page 22: Katy Perry sparked rumors she had finally taken the plunge with longtime love Orlando Bloom after she was seen sporting a suspicious gold band on her left ring finger while vacationing in Hawaii
* Scott Disick has confessed baby mama Kourtney Kardashian is the reason his relationships fail -- the reality TV slacker revealed his now ex-girlfriend Sofia Richie felt neglected because he spent more time with Kourtney and their three kids, saying it's definitely not easy that they see each other, work together and are friends but he's always been clear that his priority has been his kids and he even put it out there that taking care of Kourtney is one of his priorities
Page 26: Reality star fixer-uppers Jonathan and Drew Scott are sweating bullets over a lawsuit filed against their Property Brothers show by unhappy clients and the stress over the scandal is wreaking havoc with their personal lives -- Las Vegas couple Mindy and Paul King filed suit against Cineflix, the company that producers Property Brothers, and Villa Construction, a local contracting company, alleging they did a shoddy job repairing their home after the couple forked over $193,000 for renovations -- though the twin brothers aren't named in the lawsuit, they were concerned it could smear their reputations and upset their ladyloves -- Jonathan is close to marriage with actress Zooey Deschanel and Drew is wed to Linda Phan, who is the creative director for their company, Scott Brothers Entertainment -- they're both mortified by these allegations and they don't know what to tell Zooey and Linda, other than they will be cleared when the truth comes out but they're terrified that the bad press could derail the show -- Paul and Mindy answered a 2018 casting call and said they were assured all the work would be HGTV quality but Paul said that the place looks good from afar, but it's far from good and the Kings griped to the Nevada State Contractors Board, citing more than 90 complaints with the work ranging from unmatched baseboards to potential hazards -- as the case plays out, the brothers have been rattled by the controversy and they are stressed that this very public case is calling their work into question and there's a fear more people will come forward with similar charges
Page 28: Cover Story -- a top-secret psychological profile of Prince Harry's wife Meghan Markle paints the former actress as a mentally unstable ticking time bomb who couldn't cope with playing second fiddle to senior royals -- the explosive evaluation unmasks Meghan as a pathological liar and bipolar narcissist with histrionic personality disorder but the jaw-dropping findings about Meghan, who's pregnant with a sister for son Archie, don't surprise palace sources as Meghan's tears, tantrums and extreme mood swings had staffers terrified what she could do or say next and she was consumed with ambition and jealousy -- she married Harry expecting to be the royal superstar, but instead learned she'd always be second to his brother Prince William's wife, Duchess Kate and Meghan couldn't stand that she and Harry would always be in their shadow and wanted to destroy her in-laws but no one expected her to lob a nuclear grenade into her husband's family in a no-holds-barred TV special
Page 32: Health Watch
Page 34: Cara Delevingne confessed she used to be disgusted by same-sex relationships and was suicidal before coming to terms with her sexuality -- the model, who has dated actresses Michelle Rodriguez and Ashley Benson and singer St. Vincent, said she was trapped in a dark place and afraid before she publicly admitted to liking members of the same sex -- she said she grew up in an old-fashioned household and she didn't know anyone who was gay and she didn't know that was a thing and growing up she wasn't knowledgeable of the fact she was homophobic and she continued that the idea of being with same-sex partners, she was disgusted by that, in herself -- Cara, who identifies as pansexual, explained her sexual orientation is constantly changing and added she was so unhappy and she wasn't following her truth, that whole thing of having to fit into the box, she's an androgynous person
* Don McLean wants his decades-younger girlfriend to have the wedding of her dreams and he's set aside $1 million for the big day -- the American Pie singer has been dating model Paris Dylan for five years after an ugly divorce from second wife Patrisha Shnier -- Paris is totally unconcerned by the enormous age gap between the 75-year-old singer and 27-year-old model and wants to spend the rest of their lives together -- Don's going all out making sure she has the wedding that's fit for a princess and he's spending an absolute fortune, giving Paris the best of the best in terms of the venue and the food and the one-of-a-kind dress and Don's given her carte blanche to plan it however she wants, and people are expecting a seriously over-the-top affair
Page 36: Singer Andra Day turned to method acting to play jazz icon Billie Holiday, and it's paid off with an Oscar nomination -- Andra revealed she dropped 39 pounds and took up drinking and smoking to prep for the title role in the biopic The United States vs. Billie Holiday -- Andra doesn't recommend smoking and drinking, but she did it because she was just desperate for her first role -- Andra, famed for writing and performing the song Rise Up, also sings in the movie as Holiday, and changed her singing voice to reflect the music legend's pain
* Hollywood Hookups -- MTV reality stars Jenna Compono and Zach Nichols secretly tied the knot and their first child is due in August, Larsa Pippen is dating Myles Kronman, Ashley Jacobs and Mike Appel engaged
Page 38: Cindy Crawford said posing for Playboy was a snap compared to acting in movies -- Cindy said she really regrets starring in the 1995 bomb Fair Game, where she played a lawyer fighting a former KGB spy -- she said she never wanted to be an actor, but a producer begged her and he kept upping the price until she thought she'd be an idiot to say no, but she should have said no, or prepared herself better -- the experience taught her she's very comfortable in front of a camera, but only when she's being herself
* Former American Idol judge Randy Jackson is half the man he used to be and he couldn't be happier about it -- Randy has dropped a whopping 130 pounds to head off potentially deadly effects of his type 2 diabetes and did it in the healthiest ways -- he wrote in his book Body with Soul, it's a curse to be saddled with a disease that's life-threatening, but it's a blessing to get that huge wake-up call -- Randy admitted to crushing the scale at 358 pounds before getting gastric bypass in 2003 but now exercises and eats right and he's ditched sugar and gluten and he wants to be an example for other obese folks and show them they can get healthy and stay that way
Page 40: Tom Brady did an end run around fuming wife Gisele Bundchen by signing a four-year contract extension with his new Tampa Bay Buccaneers team after winning the Super Bowl -- the 43-year-old quarterback promised Gisele he would hang up his cleats after the upcoming season since winning last year's championship but changed his mind after snagging his record seventh NFL title with the Bucs -- Gisele is both angry and astonished because they had spoken about him finally settling down to be a full-time father and husband, but he can't stop chasing glory on the field and Gisele was stunned by his decision to re-up for another four years while the two were discussing expanding their brood and they had planned to have another child after buying their dream house on Indian Creek Island in Miami and they were even drawing plans for a nursery, and now that Tom's done a complete turnaround, everything is up in the air; it's caused some serious tension in their marriage

LwD 1.10, “No Small Parts”
Well, that was the most fun I've had watching Star Trek in literally a quarter of a century.
I had high hopes for this series. I love TAS, largely because of its wacky outsized concepts that could only have worked in animation—not that they all did work, but the potential was so apparent to me, even as a kid reading the Alan Dean Foster novelizations—and as an adult, there's something about the imagination of Lower Decks's FX setpieces that transcends even the glorious CGI bonanzas of Discovery.
Pause for a confession. I've long pushed back against criticism of serialization in new Trek. That's just how TV is now, okay? Might as well complain about it being in widescreen. But I'm backing down a little, because I've realized there is something about Star Trek that's inextricable from at least a partially-episodic format. And while Picard was telling a different kind of story, I can't deny that my favourite episodes of Disco have been the ones with a mostly self-contained A-plot. After 10 delightfully episodic instalments of LwD, its focus on long-term development of characters instead of a season-spanning puzzle-plot (okay, mostly just Mariner, but we only have 10 × 22 minutes and she is the star) has been downright refreshing.
So here we are, at the end of the most consistent and well-executed Season 1 of a Star Trek series since, arguably, Those Old Scientists. And sure, if they'd had to produce another... yikes, 42 episodes? Then sure, they probably would have dropped a clunker or two—but they didn't, and winning on a technicality is still winning. I'm practically vibrating with excitement for Disco to come back next week, but damn, I'm going to miss this little show while it's on hiatus.
Spoilers below:
Something I've been keeping track of finally paid off this week! (Which never happens to me, lol.) The destruction of the USS Solvang marked the first present-day death(s) of any Starfleet officer on Lower Decks, the only other on-screen killing at all being a flashback in "Cupid's Errant Arrow". Which makes sense, being (a) a comedy, and (b) about typically "expendable" characters: it hasn't been afraid to flirt with a little darkness here and there, but killing people off at Star Trek's usual pace wouldn't just be wrong for the tone, it would be downright bizarre.
But... people die on Star Trek. That's one of the core themes of the show, really: space is full of knowledge and beauty, but also danger and terror, and believing that the former is worth the risk of the latter is (according to Trek) one of humanity's most noble traits. I'm the least bloodthirsty TV watcher I know, but the longer we went with a body count of nil—ships completely evacuated before they were destroyed, main characters hilariously maimed without permanent consequences, etc.—well, I didn't mind per se, but the absence of truly deadly stakes was definitely getting conspicuous.
Turns out they were saving it up for maximum impact. And holy fuck, I've never felt such a pit in my stomach watching a ship get destroyed that wasn't named Enterprise. It felt grim and brutal and somehow both much too quick and dreadfully inevitable—and yeah, it looked extremely fucking cool—and I'd like every other Star Trek property for the rest of time to take notes under a large bold heading labeled RESTRAINT.
Comedy doesn't need to do this, but my favourite comedy does, and in a way that few other art forms can even approach: lower my emotional defences by making me laugh, endear character(s) to me with goofy-but-relatable antics—then BAM, sucker-punch me in the motherfucking feels. M*A*S*H is probably the classic example on TV, Futurama was notorious for it, and even Archer has pulled it off a few times; it's also a staple of some of my favourite standup. I wasn't sure if Lower Decks was going to go there in Season 1—and wasn't sure if they'd earn it—but I knew if they did, that they'd nail it, and damn. Feels good to be right.
Last batch of notes for the season!!! I rambled enough already, so let's do it liveblog-style:
I fucking KNEW they were going to use "archive" visuals from TAS at some point, I KNEW IT :D
"THOSE OLD SCIENTISTS" ahahahahahahahahahahahaha
I like chill and confident Boimler a lot? You can really see—
oh bRADWARD NOOOOO
That opening shot of the Solvang tracking down to the red giant was extremely Discovery-esque... minus the motion sickness, that is
A lady captain AND a lady first officer? That's—oh hey, it's Captain Dayton's brand-new ship. Hahaha, that means they're totally fucked, right?.
Yep! They sure a—umm, wh—shit, okay, but—oh no—no, you can't—wait DON'T
...fuck
FUCK.
Narrator: "And then Amy needed a five-hour break."
[live-action Star Trek showrunner voice] "Gee, Mike! Why does CBS let you have two cold opens?"
Okay, yes, the bit with Rutherford cycling through all the different attitudes in his implant was transparently an excuse for Eugene Cardero to vamp while waiting for something to do in the story, but as far as I'm concerned they can contrive a reason for him to do a bunch of different silly Rutherfords in a row any time they damn well want, because that was classic!!!
EXOCOMP EXOCOMP EXOCOMP EXOCOMP
AND THE EXOCOMP IS PAINTED LIKE THE EXOCOMP IS WEARING A LITTLE EXOCOMP-SIZED STARFLEET UNIFORM
EXOCOMP!!!!!
The slow burn and now the payoff of the Mariner-is-Freeman's-secret-daughter plot has been executed so well. I'm beyond impressed with this writer's room, y'all—they are threading a hell of a needle here
"Wolf 359 was an inside job" would have been a spit-take if I'd had anything in my mouth
...how many memos do you think Starfleet Command has had to issue asking people to stop calling the USS Sacramento "the Sac"?
CAN WE TALK ABOUT HOW THEY'VE DECORATED THE SHUTTLECRAFT SEQUOIA THOUGH
Is, uh, is it weird if I'm starting to ship Tendi and Peanut Hamper a little? It is weird, isn't it. I knew it was weird...
Coital barbs??? I take back everything I said about wanting to know more about Shaxs/T'Ana.
The "good officer" version of Mariner is... kind of hot, tbh! But Tawny Newsome has done such a great job of building this character all season that her voice getting uncharacteristically clipped and martial and "sir! yes, sir!" is also deeply, deeply weird
Ah, so this is literally exactly like when TNG (and DS9) would bring in, and then blow up, a never-before-seen Galaxy-class ship, just to underscore that we're facing a real threat this week, baby. And hey, it fucking worked—my heart was in my throat, omg, for the reveal of the—
PAKLEDS?????????
The fucking PAKLEDS have been gluing weapons to their ships for the last 15 years. GREAT.
(We interrupt the SHIP BEING SLICED INTO SCRAP for an interesting bit of world-building: on Earth, the traditional First Contact Day meal is salmon!)
"I need a dangerous, half-baked solution that breaks Starfleet codes and totally pisses me off! That's an order." I'm starting to think Captain Freeman might actually be overqualified for the Cerritos, y'all—she's REALLY awesome
OH SHIT IT'S BADGEY, this is a TERRIBLE IDEA
"How much contraband have you hidden on my ship?" "I don't know! A lot!"
Awwww, Boims!!!
AHAHAHAHAHAHA, FUCK THIS, PEANUT HAMPER OUT
BADGEY NOOOOO
AUGHHHHH WHAT THE CHRIST DID HE JUST—BUT—RUTHERFORD'S IMPLANT????
RUTHERFORD!!!!!!!!!!
SHAXS!!!!!!
F U C K ! ! ! ! !
ahaIOPugdfhagntpgjrq90e5mgu90qe5;oigoqgw4ouegrw5SP;IAEHURVa IT’S THE TITAN???????????
IT'S CAPTAIN WILLIAM T. RIKER ON THE MOTHERFUCKING TITAN??????????
i'm screaming I'M SCREAMINGGGGGGTGGGTGQER;LBHAOIBVNV;OAPBIJNVagr;h;oagruipuwtnaetbaetgq35ghqet
I'M SO GLAD THIS WASN'T SPOILED FOR ME WTF
I AM WEEPING LIKE A CHILD
...
(Just a brief 20-minute pause this time)
And oh wow, seeing Will and Deanna hits different after Picard too, in a few different ways, which I may even get into later now that my heartrate is back to normal, lmao
Oh, I am always here for some jokes at the expense of the Sovereign class. The Enterprise-E sucked. They should have built a new bigger model of the D and new Galaxy-class interiors for the TNG movies, and I will die on that hill
OKAY, FINE, YOU GOT ME, RUTHERFORD × TENDI WOULD BE ADORABLE AND THIS IS ACTUALLY A PRETTY GOOD SETUP FOR IT
Awwww, Shaxs though :( Congrats on the single most badass death in Star Trek history, dude. The Prophets would—well, the actual Prophets would probably be slightly confused about most of it, but Kira Nerys would be proud of you and I feel like that probably counts for more. RIP, Papa Bear
I am here all damn DAY for the Mariner–Riker parallels, ahahahahaha
Pausing it to record my prediction that Boimler's commitment to not caring about rank anymore is going to last 3... 2...
Yep.
Bradward, how DARE YOU.
"Those guys had a long road, getting from there to here." OH FOR THE LOVE OF—
What a brilliant way to resolve and renew the various character arcs and relationships moving into Season 2! The writers could easily have brought everything back to status quo—chaotic Mariner fighting with her mom and being a bad influence on Boimler, etc.—and done another 10 just like these, but I suspect that wouldn't have been ambitious enough for these writers. What a blast. I cannot wait for more.
Thanks for following along, friends! Stay tuned for my (similarly patchy and amateur) coverage of Discovery, starting next week!

En Mi Barrio con Kulture
Interviewee: Co-owner, David Garcia.
"En Mi Barrio": storytelling through a multicultural and intersectional lens. Highlighting the works of artists, business owners, and community leaders of their own respective fields who uplift underrepresented groups and share their culture through their works. In their own words: “Kulture... with a backward "K"! In business since July 2015. You have to visit our eclectic store to understand how diverse and full of culture our inventory is. Our small local business thrives on making our customers smile and bringing ethnic diversity to midtown Sacramento.” Kulture is owned and operated by David Garcia and Cuahutemoc Vargas with a strong familia support system and dedicated business team to keep it all running smoothly. Below is the first installment of the En Mi Barrio series ~ enjoy! <3
~~~~
Sophia: Let’s start with your origins and family history.
David: So my dad was born in Coalcoman, Michoacan and when he was young they moved to Jalisco were my mom is from. They grew up the town of Cihuatlan. That’s where my oldest brother was born and then we moved to the US. We travel there a lot and many other cities. My business partner was born in Michoacan and would go back and forth from the US when he was young. We gather a our goods from these areas but also from a variety of towns and cities in Mexico.
Sophia: How did Kulture gain its roots?
David: So Kulture started with our clothing brand, Keeping It Paisa, and with Kulture but on a smaller scale at first. When my partner and I started, I was working at the Capitol for the Senate and he was working at Sherwin Williams in the painting industry. He actually started the clothing brand, but had just one design and a couple of hats in the beginning. I’ve come from a sales background with my past jobs and with my degree, so he asked me if I could join and help boost sales and I said yeah. I loved the name right off the bat, so I jumped on board and within three months after I joined we did a golf tournament to raise money to donate to the migrant students at Sac State in the CAMP program, College Assistant Migrant Program. I was in that program, my business partner too, we were both apart of it. We ended up donating money to a local school that year to buy them TV’s and the second year we made more money were able then to give back to the students at Sac State. Every year it’s gotten bigger and bigger. This last year we actually sold out and had about 180 people there with all-you-can-eat taqueros and we were sponsored by Corona and Modelo. It’s a fun event and it sold out a month before the golf tournament. With that, we figured we’ve grown our name and reputation so we began looking for a shop. I found the little space on 24th street, which was originally Theresa’s Antiques. The owner wanted to sell the space under the condition that her antiques stay with it. In the end we decided to buy the business and began selling antiques alongside our clothes. We were surprised to see the antiques really sold well and that’s when folks started asking about imports. Do we ever get this or know where to get this and that from Mexico. We met a guy that brings Talavera that his family makes in Guanajuato, he started bringing us some, that started selling, and we kept growing and growing from there.
I don’t think we did Kulture in the proper way. Most people have a business plan and we did it kinda the opposite way. We found the place, signed, and made it work. Three years in and things are really starting to fall into place with this new location. I always wanted to start my own business but never knew what. Kulture was never planned, but it’s been a great journey. The feedback from our customers is honestly amazing and keeps us pushing too. They love the store and what we’re about.
Sophia: So how long has Kulture been in Sacramento?
David: This past July was three years, July 6th, but we moved here to our new location in November. Honestly, since we moved here it’s really grown now that we have more of an outlet to do more with our space. We’re working together with the owners of Midtown Cantina Alley and they have a vision for the place too. Our new signs just went up recently too, which say, “Placita MX”, with one on both entrance. This whole location will be called just that, with shops inside La Placita. We’re one of the main anchor tenants and slowly they’re gonna bring in a few more. We also own La Tiendita Oxo inside the court, a play off the name of the Oxxo’s in Mexico. Sodas, chips, candies, and some other goods from Mexico.
Sophia: What other plans do you have for the court?
David: So this court area, we’re hoping to get wifi set up in here so people can come hang out, do work, maybe grab a snack or soda at the shops. Eventually the owners may want to open a small coffee or food shop, still an idea in the works. There’s even potential for private dance or yoga classes here, but definitely as many events as we can to bring people in to get to know what we’re about.
Sophia: What challenges have you faced as a Latino business owner in Sacramento?
David: Honestly I feel we never faced pushback from the people. The community is really embracing of the Mexican cultures, foods, and traditions. Going back to the beginning when we sold antiques. Those same people who bought those from us were the same people who would ask about the imports which led us to begin thinking about really selling these imports.
Sophia: How do you feel that Kulture might help the Sacramento community better understand Mexican traditions? Was it a part of the mission?
David: Honestly at first, I don’t think it really was. It was more so something we wanted to start. My business partner and I travel to Mexico multiple times a year, together and on our own time. More and more people began to ask if we could bring back this and that, so slowly we started bringing goods in and the more people would see, the more demand increased from there. I don’t know what percent, but there’s a big percent of our customers who have either visited Mexico or traveled to visit family, but many times they can’t bring anything back with flight restrictions or things break or it’s too expensive. They come into Kulture saying, “Oh I saw that in Cabo or Guadalajara, but I’ll buy it here because I can’t get over there”. I feel like, specifically in the Latino or Mexicano culture, it’s so rich. There’s so much to it that all people can feel welcomed by. Like even with the whole “Taco Tuesday” thing. Everyone uses it to sell, even places that don’t have anything to do with Mexican foods, but we’re very diverse with such rich history that a lot of people embrace it and want to be apart of it.
Sophia: Yes! There’s already such a huge market for mexican foods and fusions in California, but it’s definitely starting to show in Sacramento. Like Camellia and the Horchata Lattes, people really went crazy for those.
David: Exactly, or even like Temple’s Mexican Mochas because everyone knows their gonna sell. You see lots of Mexican food restaurants do very well these days too. People love Mexican food and the fact that we’re in California, with a denser population of Mexicans and Latinos of all kinds, definitely helps these businesses to continue to grow.
Sophia: We’re also a crazy growing demographic and our culture has become so prevalent in all areas.
David: Exactly and to me, I’m very proud to be Mexicano, and I see some people shy away from saying they’re Mexican or showing their traditions. To me I feel like, people here almost have to change now to fit parts of our culture as opposed to us to fit American culture like it’s traditionally been. It’s just a huge melting pot in this city. Like you said, the numbers are growing and they’re going to continue to keep growing. The way I see it, I’m gonna do mine and you’re gonna do yours. If you don’t like mine then you don’t have to be around it, but if you want to be involved and be apart of it, come join us, you’re always welcome. And a lot of people do! I think they embrace it.
New Post has been published on https://techcrunchapp.com/caseys-will-buy-buckys-for-580-million-national-news/
Casey's will buy Bucky's for $580 million | National News
OMAHA — Omaha-based Bucky’s Convenience Stores is being purchased by one of its competitors, Casey’s General Stores.
The $580 million cash purchase of Buchanan Energy was announced Monday. The price includes tax benefits valued at $80 million.
Buchanan Energy operates 94 stores and 79 dealer locations in Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska and Texas.
Casey’s operates about 2,200 locations in 16 states and describes itself as the nation’s fourth-largest convenience store chain. Casey’s is also acquiring the real estate Bucky’s had planned to use for future expansion.
Blair lands $85 million Dollar General distribution center, 400 jobs
For the consumer, it means that Casey’s pizza will become available at Bucky’s. The popular pizza has made Casey’s the nation’s fifth-largest pizza chain, according to the company.
Over the next few years the names of Bucky’s stores will change to Casey’s, said Katie Petru, a spokeswoman for Casey’s. It’s not clear how the purchase will affect personnel. Petru said Casey’s is assessing how to best combine the two companies. Casey’s said in its statement Monday that the company expects to achieve $23 million in “annual synergies” by the third year.
Nebraska sees strong year for small-business lending
Buchanan Energy was founded 40 years ago.
Steve Buchanan, founder and president of Buchanan, said he was pleased that the company found a home with a top convenience store chain.
“Our shared Midwestern roots and community values are aligned as we continue to serve our loyal customers,” he said in the statement.
The sale is expected to be finalized by the end of the year.
Profit jumps 82% at Buffett’s firm but virus hurts business
Fortune 500 and 1,000 companies in Omaha
1 – Berkshire Hathaway
Berkshire Hathaway
Fortune rank: No. 3 with revenue of $242.1 billion; down from No. 2 last year. First cracked Fortune list in 1989 at No. 205.
History: The holding company of large- and medium-sized firms and investments has grown largely from the singular wisdom of Chairman and CEO Warren Buffett. It started as an investment pool of family and friends in Omaha in the mid-1950s. In 1965, Buffett bought the textile company that gave Berkshire its name. (Ironically, he later called it his worst investment.) His philosophy of buying successful companies with firm niches and keeping leadership in place has achieved returns well in excess of the stock market. The move into insurance was key, as Buffett uses premium reserves available for investment to fund additional purchases. Forbes notes that Berkshire now generates nearly three-quarters of its revenue from its non-financial operating businesses. At 87, Buffett is the oldest CEO of a Fortune 500 company. The company has maintained its offices at Omaha’s Kiewit Plaza since 1962.
BRENDAN SULLIVAN/THE WORLD-HERALD
2 – Aflac
Aflac
Fortune rank: No. 137 on revenue of $21.7 billion; down from No. 126 from last year.
History: Founded in 1955 as American Family Life Insurance by John Amos and his brothers Paul and Bill in Columbus, Georgia, Aflac pays benefits when people are sick or injured. It gained wider recognition starting in 2000 with a marketing campaign using a duck that announces its name. In 2002, Aflac moved its legal domicile to Nebraska for tax reasons and located a regional office in Omaha, although its main offices remain in Georgia.
BLOOMBERG
3 – Union Pacific
Union Pacific
Fortune rank: No. 141 on revenue of $21.2 billion; up from No. 143 last year. Listed each year since non-manufacturing companies were added to the list in 1995.
History: The company was created by the 1862 Pacific Railway Act, an act of Congress that called for construction of a transcontinental rail line from the Missouri River to the West Coast. The first track was laid out of Omaha in 1865, and U.P. grew into a national icon. Multiple mergers over 150 years helped U.P. amass the nation’s largest rail network, with operations in 23 western states and prime rail connections into Mexico. In 2004, the railroad opened a new 19-story headquarters downtown that serves about 2,900 of the company’s 42,000 employees.
REBECCA S. GRATZ/THE WORLD-HERALD
4 – Pacific Life
Pacific Life
Fortune rank: No. 313 on revenue of $9.5 billion; the same ranking as last year.
History: Founded in 1868 in Sacramento, California, as Pacific Mutual Life Insurance Co., the company’s life insurance, annuity and other financial products pay $2.3 billion in benefits each year. Although its main office is in Newport Beach, California, in 2004 Pacific Life moved its legal domicile to Nebraska for tax reasons and now has a regional office in Omaha’s Aksarben Village.
KENT SIEVERS/THE WORLD-HERALD
5 – Peter Kiewit & Sons
Peter Kiewit Sons’ Inc.
Fortune rank: No. 339 on revenue of $8.7 billion; down from No. 324 last year. Made its Fortune debut in 1991 and since 1998 has been listed every year but one. Is privately held but qualifies for the Fortune list because it publicly reports revenue.
History: Three sons of Peter Kiewit took over their father’s Omaha construction company, with the youngest, also named Peter, credited with turning it into one of the nation’s largest. The company took off while building military installations during World War II and the Cold War. It also built more miles of Interstate system than any other contractor, causing Fortune to dub Peter Kiewit “the Colossus of Roads.” Today, it is one of the largest employee-owned firms in the world and one of only a handful of construction companies big enough to take on billion-dollar projects.
SARAH HOFFMAN/THE WORLD-HERALD
6 – Mutual
Mutual of Omaha
Fortune rank: No. 337 on revenue of $8.7 billion; up from No. 342 last year. Made its debut in 1995, dropped off in 2006 and 2007, but solidly on the list since.
History: Got off to a humble start in 1909 as the Mutual Benefit Health and Accident Association, initially struggling to attract policyholders. Under the leadership of Creighton medical student C.C. Criss and later V.J. Skutt, it grew and by the 1950s had emerged as a leading health and accident insurer. The name was changed to Mutual of Omaha in 1962, and a year later it became a household name with sponsorship of the popular “Wild Kingdom” TV show. The company rebranded its familiar Native American head logo in 2001, expanded into banking in 2007, and renewed its commitment to its midtown Omaha headquarters by developing the mixed-use Midtown Crossing.
JEFF BUNDY/THE WORLD-HERALD
7 – TD Ameritrade
TD Ameritrade
Fortune rank: No. 630 on revenue of $3.7 billion; up from No. 674 last year.
History: Founder Joe Ricketts saw an opportunity in 1975 when the Securities and Exchange Commission eliminated the practice of fixed brokerage commissions. Ricketts’ firm, First Omaha Securities Inc., began offering discounted commissions and helped usher in a new era of investing, coupled with technology that evolved from touch-tone phones to the Internet. Forty years later, TD Ameritrade has more than 11 million client accounts with more than $1.2 trillion in assets and custodial services for more than 6,000 independent registered investment advisers. Clients trade more than 940,000 times each day.
8 – Green Plains Inc.
Green Plains Inc.
Fortune rank: No. 782 on revenue of $2.7 billion; up from No. 804 last year.
SARAH HOFFMAN/THE WORLD-HERALD
9 – Valmont
Valmont
Fortune rank: No. 782 on revenue of $2.7 billion; up from No. 804 last year.
History: In 1946, Robert B. Daugherty spent nearly his life’s savings — $5,000 — to buy a small manufacturing company on a farm near Valley to build farm elevators. Years later, with the invention of center-pivot irrigation, Valmont found its niche. It then expanded into steel pipe and tubing manufacturing for irrigation systems and other industries. Through acquisitions and new construction, the company grew to be a global player in certain segments of the agriculture, communications and utilities markets. Today, Valmont’s worldwide operations are constantly looking for opportunities to expand its four business sectors: engineered support structures (steel and aluminum poles for traffic lights, street lighting, etc.); utility support structures (poles for electrical transmission lines, etc.); irrigation; and coatings (galvanization).
A Danger in Disguise? - Home Security Tips for When Someone Comes Knocking at Your Door
When you hear a knock, it's not enough these days to determine if it's safe to open the door by simply asking "who's there?" or by taking a peek through the peephole. With criminals now disguising themselves as police officers, utility workers, and delivery men, those who sound and look like innocent strangers could very well danger in disguise.
Take the recent case of a man from Sacramento, California, whose home was burglarized by two men disguised as utility workers. According to FOX40 News, a man claiming to be with SMUD told the resident he needed to check a sewage system that was located behind his house. The homeowner escorted the man to the backyard and stayed there until the work was completed. In the meantime, another man dressed as a SMUD utility worker entered the home and stole personal belongings from the bedrooms, as reported by witnesses.
Fortunately, the victim of this crime was not harmed. But not everyone is as fortunate. According to the latest crime statistics produced by the U.S. Department of Justice, over 2 million of the home crimes that occur across the nation each year involve violence at the hands of a stranger.
Though statistics show that crime rates have decreased since the U.S. Department of Justice's 2008 report, one fact remains: criminals don't discriminate. Today's news stories and crime reports show us that it doesn't matter if you live in a 10,000-square-foot mansion or a modest one-bedroom apartment in the middle of town. Criminals look for easy targets and opportunities to carry out their dirty deeds with the least amount of risk of getting caught.
Today's criminals know that people aren't likely to open their door to a stranger. As a result, many have gotten craftier with their schemes as a way to trick people into feeling safe. This is why it's important to remain alert of your surroundings no matter where you are and to have a solid home security plan in place for when strangers show up at your front door.
Here are four home security tips that that can help keep you and your loved ones safe when someone comes knocking at your door:
Tip #1: Don't open the door to someone you don’t know if you aren't expecting their visit. It's one thing to receive a visit from a cable TV man when you've placed an order for service, but if someone claiming to be with "any" company that you did not call shows up at your door, don't open it. Even if someone claiming to be a police officer or firefighter is standing on your doorstep, your safety is more important than opening the door out of kindness or respect. When these situations occur, simply ask them for their name and the company they are with then call and verify their identify. For added protection, don't allow them to instruct you on which phone number to call. Find the listing yourself in your community directly or online search and call the number yourself.
Tip #2: Reinforce your door with a heavy duty door brace. There are certain situations where you may feel the need to open your door slightly to speak with someone or receive a delivery, such as when a mail carrier shows up at your door with a delivery that requires a signature. This is where having a high quality door brace can make all the difference. Compact and easy to install, a high quality security door brace can withstand over 1700 pounds of force. Installing it a few inches behind the inside of your front door allows you to open the door just enough to sign a delivery form and receive small packages with peace of mind. If it's a larger package, just ask the carrier to leave it on the front porch and retrieve it after they leave.
Tip #3: Make it easy for your children to see who's on the other side of the door without having to open. For a child, it's hard to resist the temptation to open the door when they hear a knock, especially when they've grown used to the knock being one of their friends. To reduce the risk of your child opening the door to a stranger, be sure to provide your child with a way to see who's at the door without opening it. If your child is not able to reach the peephole, you can easily replace it with an electronic peephole viewer. This handy device employs a small battery-operated LCD display screen that makes it easy to view whose outside from various heights and angles. The LCD screen can be placed wherever you feel is easiest for your child and other members of your family to see it.
Tip #4: Ensure your children understand the appropriate safety measures to follow when someone knocks at the door. Although it's important to teach your children "why" they should follow the safety rules you put in place, you don't have to frighten them to get them to follow the rules. Reviewing and practicing the steps with your children is the best way to get them to develop good safety habits. When it comes to when they hear someone knock or ring the doorbell, make sure they understand they are never to open the door to a stranger. Keeping their innocence and curiosity in mind, be sure to follow tip #3 above and make it easy for each of your children to see who's at the door without risking their safety.
Adding each of these steps to your home security plan can provide you and your family with the protection you need should danger in disguise ever show up at your door.
"Gavin Newsom gave 1 BILLION to CHINA" California Gov. Gavin Newsom discusses what it will take to lift coronavirus restrictions during a news conference on April 14. Newsom has committed the state to a $990-million agreement with a China-based electric car company to produce 200 million protective masks. SACRAMENTO — Gov. Gavin Newsom‘s decision to spend almost $1 billion in taxpayer funds to buy protective masks drew national attention as an aggressive move by California to solve one of the most nagging problems of the coronavirus crisis. But almost two weeks after he announced the deal during a cable TV interview, very few details have been disclosed. The governor’s advisors have so far declined requests for information about the agreement with BYD, the Chinese electric car manufacturer hired to produce the masks, though the state has already wired the company the first installment of $495 million. #gavinnewsom #government #pieceofshit #goaway #sellout #trash #hoax #stealing #aganda #aganda21 #conspiracy #china #usa #money #followthemoney #wakeup #notwearingamask #holysmokestv #holysmokes #holysmokestimes #oneman #solo #news #knowyourroots #change #fight #youfighttolive #la #losangeles #ca (at Los Angeles, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCoR3f8hoWS/?igshid=sz4fc4tifjny
How to get broadband without a phone line and line rental | TechRadar
Via techradar.com
You can get broadband internet speeds without having to commit to a phone line. That means you can not only save money, potentially, but also avoid the hassle of actually having a phone line installed in your home. Let’s be honest, landlines aren’t the most common features in modern homes now that smartphones are so reliable.
Get a free estimate from network cabling installers Sacramento
Broadband doesn’t require a phone line to work. It’s that simple. The phone lines were put in by BT and so that company still requires you to use them, as will many other companies that use the fibre optic lines also put in by BT. Essentially it’s a legacy requirement to help pay off the hardware that BT paid to install and maintain.
So all that means whatever broadband you get, with a separate phone line or not, it will work the same. Yes the phone line is a copper wire connection that’s totally separate to the fibre optics of broadband.
If you want the speed of fibre broadband but without the phone line there’s really only one choice and that’s Virgin Media. It’s the one company that doesn’t use the national telecoms network cabling, as it has put down its own.
The result is the same high-speed fibre optic broadband – well, faster actually – without the need to pay for a phone line you may never use.
It’s understandable that you might think going for BT broadband, where you have to also pay for a landline, would be more expensive than Virgin Media broadband. In reality the pricing isn’t much different.
So while you can avoid getting a phone line, Virgin Media is actually one of the more expensive options as it offers such fast speeds and usually wants you to opt in for a package deal with its TV offerings too.
As such it’s worth checking out our fibre broadband deals feature. You might find that getting a landline package from a provider like TalkTalk actually works out cheaper than the big brands of BT and Virgin. So even if you don’t need the phone, it could end up being cheaper.
The Best New Shows and Movies on Netflix This Week -- The Society, Wine Country
Looking for something new to watch on Netflix? Here is a list of all the best new shows and movies released on Netflix the week of May 10-May 16.
This is a very well-rounded week on Netflix. We've got a star-studded comedy movie (Wine Country), a suspenseful teen thriller series (The Society), the final season of a well-liked anthology series (Easy), some anime, some kid stuff, some foreign cinema, and some documentaries, and not too much of any one thing. Sometimes it's like "why do we need three murder documentaries this week," you know? Nothing this week is going to be a big hit, except mayyybe The Society, but nothing is especially bad, which isn't always the case. Steady as she goes, Netflix!
If you're looking for even more hand-picked recommendations, click over to our Watch This Now! page.
(All titles are out Friday, May 10, unless otherwise specified.)
The Biggest Releases
The Society, Season 1 Netflix's latest TV-MA YA offering is its best one yet, an inspired Lord of the Flies riff about the teenagers of a wealthy New England town that gets mysteriously cut off from the world. "No parents, no school, no rules" sounds like fun, right? Think again! Things Chinua Achebe real fast — and that's the kind of reference these kids would make, because they're all hilariously well-read. This is a show where ominous graffiti in Romanized Hebrew appears on a wall and a jock is like, "Oh, that's from the Book of Daniel. It means you've been judged and found wanting." It's a lot of fun.
Wine Country Amy Poehler is making her directorial debut with this feel-good comedy about a group of longtime friends taking a trip to Napa to celebrate a 50th birthday. The cast includes Poehler's own longtime friends and fellow Saturday Night Live alumni Maya Rudolph, Rachel Dratch, Ana Gasteyer, Paula Pell, Emily Spivey, and Tina Fey. In addition to directing, Poehler also stars, executive-produces, and wrote the story with Spivey and Liz Cackowski (who used to write for, you guessed it, Saturday Night Live). (Trailer)
Everything Else
Easy, Season 3 Writer-director Joe Swanberg's low-key anthology series is back for a third and final season of charming little tales of the love, sex, and app lives of a gaggle of Chicagoans. Returning faves include Jake Johnson, Aya Cash, Dave Franco, Zazie Beetz, Marc Maron, and Elizabeth Reaser, along with new faces like Sophia Bush and John Gallagher Jr. Is this the final sigh of mumblecore? Maybe!
Dry Martina I feel like this came out already? Or maybe Netflix puts out so many similar movies that I can't keep track of them all. Anyway, this is a sexy Chilean dramedy about a former teen pop star rediscovering her libido and finding out about who she is in the process. Lots of talk about "concha" in the trailer. (Trailer)
Gente que viene y bah (In Family I Trust) This is a Spanish movie about an architect whose boyfriend cheats on her with a news anchor and everyone finds out so she returns to the small town where she's from and gets her groove back with the help of her family and the local hot dude. You've seen this one before. (Trailer)
Harvey Girls Forever!, Season 2 The animated series formerly known as Harvey Street Kids is back for another season of after-school adventures on the street where every day feels like Saturday. Fun fact: The voices of the boy band the girls adore belong to Joey McIntyre (New Kids on the Block), Nick Lachey (98 Degrees), Joey Fatone (*NSYNC), and Shawn Stockman (Boyz II Men). That's star power! (Trailer)
Jailbirds People sure do love jail documentaries. Here's another one, profiling the women incarcerated in the Sacramento County Jail. It's as close to a real-life Orange Is the New Black as Netflix has gotten. (Trailer)
ReMastered: The Lion's Share The eighth and final installment of this season of monthly music documentary series ReMastered follows South African journalist Rian Malan's quest to redistribute the wealth of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," which has earned millions of dollars for American artists but nothing for the impoverished family of songwriter Solomon Linda, an injustice which Malan sets out to rectify as an act of personal contrition for his own family's role in apartheid. (Trailer)
Shéhérazade This gritty French indie is set in the slums of Marseille, where teenage petty crook Zach falls in love with streetwalker Shéhérazade, which leads to serious consequences. It won three César Awards (the French Oscars), for Best First Film for director Jean-Bernard Marlin and Best New Actor and Actress for its young stars Dylan Richard and Kenza Fortas. (Trailer)
Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj, Volume 3 Hasan Minhaj is back for another batch of informative John Oliver-style political comedy. Topics in this volume include censorship in China (which comes after Minhaj was banned in Saudi Arabia), politics in India, and the Department of Housing and Urban Development and its loony leader Ben Carson. (Trailer / Sunday, May 12)
Malibu Rescue The premise of this kids' movie is Baby Baywatch. Some kids including Breanna Yde and Ricardo Hurtado from Nick's School of Rock learn how to be junior lifeguards. If this were a theatrically released movie, it would be rated PG for "mild rude humor." (Trailer / Monday, May 13)
revisions, Season 1 This anime series has a pretty similar premise to The Society in some ways. It follows some teenagers from Shibuya who get time-warped into a future version of their city. But then there's big robots and stuff they have to fight, so it's actually pretty different than The Society. You should just watch The Society. (Trailer / Tuesday, May 14)
Still Laugh-In: The Stars Celebrate This special is a tribute to the classic Nixon-era sketch comedy show Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In. Dan Rowan and Dick Martin are both dead, so they won't be there to accept the praises. There doesn't seem to be much of a point to this besides the fact that it launched the career of Lily Tomlin, and Netflix loves Lily Tomlin. It also launched the career of Goldie Hawn, but she's not in this. But it does have Tiffany Haddish crip-walking, which is something we all know and love from the original Laugh-In! (Trailer)
Stop searching, start watching! TV Guide's Watch This Now! page has even more TV recommendations.
7 Signs You Should Put Off—or Call Off—a Home Renovation
Tempura/iStock
Taking on a home renovation can improve your property’s value, remedy any nagging structural or cosmetic flaws, and generally make your place way more comfortable to live in. All good!
But hold on: No matter how good your intentions may be, a hasty home overhaul can actually wind up costing you.
So what are the signs that it’s time to pump the brakes on your home renovation plans? We asked a number of construction and real estate experts to tap into their own experiences and share the situations in which they would recommend you delay the project—or avoid it altogether.
1. You plan to cut corners on the wrong things
There are numerous ways to reduce the cost of a renovation—from using your own DIY capabilities to choosing less expensive materials. But quality labor is one of the things you should always invest in.
“Spending on expensive materials but cheap craftsmanship is a big mistake,” says Gianpaolo Manzolillo, a licensed real estate salesperson at Citi Habitats in Brooklyn, NY. “You can buy beautiful hardwood floors, but if they are installed with big, uneven gaps, they aren’t worth a dime.”
2. It’s the wrong time of the year
Any contractor or neighbor who has undergone a renovation will tell you that weather can make or break a construction job. Winter storms can wreak havoc in the East, Midwest, and parts of the Northwest. Hurricane season for the Atlantic Basin peaks from mid-August to late October. So folks in those regions should take into account inclement weather before planning a remodel.
“Running into a snowy or rainy season could mean leaks, lack of proper heating, and electrical problems.” says Jody Costello, a home renovation planning and contractor fraud expert.
3. You have no room for errors
Even if bad weather doesn’t come into play, home renovations are rarely completed on time, and you should factor this into your decision.
“Permits can issue later than expected, inspections can get delayed, and subcontractors can be busy—and all these factors can impact schedules,” says Dan Meyer, co-founder and CEO of Pocketdoor, an app that helps homeowners coordinate their home projects.
A delay or error in a reno project could put you out of your home for an extra week or month. Can’t afford the imposition? Then you may need to think twice about starting the work.
4. You need to borrow funds
One of the ways to pay for a renovation is to borrow money or refinance your home. But Robert Taylor, owner of The Real Estate Solutions Guy in Sacramento, CA, warns against this practice.
“It may seem like common sense, but you shouldn’t do renovation projects that you have to borrow funds for,” he says. Taylor does make two exceptions: When you’re going to sell your home within six months, or if your home has a serious safety risk.
5. You think it’s as easy as TV makes it seem
It’s hard to not be blinded by the high-glam transformations on home improvement reality shows like “Fixer Upper” or “Property Brothers.” The magic of television can make it seem as if making over a house is a piece of cake. Hate to burst your bubble, but there are many behind-the-scene costs and considerations that these shows just don’t show.
“We all see the television shows where they are able to completely renovate a house in what feels like a week—and for a very unrealistic budget,” says Mark Luongo, owner and project manager at Luongo Electric in Burnaby, BC. “Many times, these television budgets do not include the cost of labor, the materials and finishings (which are usually donated to the show), or the contracting and management fees that the network picks up.”
So before you take on a renovation, it’s important to research every cost and have an emergency fund, because there’s a very good chance that the process of overhauling your home will not be as smooth as it’s presented on TV.
6. You’re over-improving for the neighborhood
Even if you have the budget and time for a remodel, it could hurt you if you ever decide to sell your home.
“Real estate agents, appraisers, and lenders use comparable market values to assess the fair market value of a home,” says Jodi Moody of Smoky Mountain Realty in Lenoir City, TN. “If you have a $275,000 home and want to put in a $50,000 kitchen, you’d likely want the new asking price to be at least $325,000,” she adds. “But if the cost per square foot average of your subdivision only supports a sales price of $295,000, your home becomes a harder sale later on.”
In this instance, it doesn’t really matter how great the renovation looks—what counts is how it compares to the other homes in your area. “Your granite kitchen may provide no return on the money spent, if the rest of the neighborhood is using upgraded laminate,” Manzolillo says.
7. You’re trying to make your partner happy
“Renovations can be very stressful on a relationship: They are expensive, messy, and intrusive on your personal life,” says Luongo. So, make sure you’re both in favor of the home improvement project and that your relationship can handle it.
A remodel is something that should never be rushed or used as a Band-Aid to make your partner happy. “There is nothing worse than rushing into a renovation and doing a patch-together job just to try and make someone happier,” she says.
