As a gender non-conforming tomboy, this whole essay is spot on! Plus, I'm a Black presenting-woman. My tomboyishness was ridiculed and celebrated depending on the sitch. Once, I stuck my inhaler into my mouth, held it with my teeth, so I could do the 50-yard sprint(PE teachers were especially awful in the 80s as there was no belief in anyone with chronic illnesses allowed to sit things out without punitive consequences). I was hailed by the teacher, reviled by my ableist classmates. The boys were sent off to play football. One boy got the "punishment" to teach the girls how to throw the football. I was the only one who threw it properly, and got the admiration from the boy and sneers and insults of "she's a tomboy. What do you expect?" I was good at this because I used to play tag football with a Mexican neighbor when I was in elementary school... Up until my very progressive dad thought that me playing football with a boy my age was a bridge too far.

I became hyper-feminine near the end of middle school and the beginning of high school. Also, I got a boyfriend, and this was all before I realized I was Asexual, so yeah... We need to teach comprehensive sex education and gender identity studies like they do in the Scandinavian nations and Thailand...

also while i’m ranting about gender i always see debate about whether girls are rewarded for being tomboys or not and it’s like. actually girls are rewarded for mirroring whatever the situation demands of them. girls can’t be too prissy and refuse to play in the creek, but girls also can’t show up to girly events covered in mud. girls can’t have makeup art as a hobby or else they’re superficial, but if they never wear makeup they’re a slob and dumpy, etc. it’s not that girls are universally rewarded or punished for being tomboys, they’re rewarded for bending over backwards to always be exactly right for any given situation and punished for breaking those boundaries. so yes a classically pretty girl who cleans up nice is rewarded when she can ALSO be a tomboy. but a girl who is a tomboy all the time is definitely punished for never being able to achieve that prerequisite feminine side. this debate is over now thanks
