QUESTIONING: INSTUPENDO
Tumblr media
Q: WHAT DO YOU DO?
A: I compose and produce indie electronic music on my laptop.
Q: WHY DO YOU DO IT?
A: I can’t imagine not creating music, it’s just innate. I enjoy making the sounds/music I want to hear and that it’s a great way to meet amazingly creative people. It’s also meaningful that my music resonates with people.
Q: WHEN DID YOU START DOING IT?
A: Middle School
Q: WHO INSPIRED YOU TO DO IT?
A: Skrillex
Q: WHERE DO YOU DO IT?
A: In my bedroom, in the car, by the pool. Wherever.
Q: DOES PHILLY IMPACT THE SOUND?
A: Not particularly. I’m more a child of the internet; I'm able to connect with and be influenced by people from all around the universe.
Q: DREAM COLLAB?
A: Uyama Hiroto or Nav.
Q: SPECIFIC CULTURE THAT DRIVES YOUR WORK?
A: Internet culture. I started out making Drum & Bass, and the way the scene’s progressed over the course of several years, my sound’s evolved into the ambient space it currently occupies. It would probably be more accurate to say my work is more emotionally driven than culturally driven.
Q: WHO ARE YOU LISTENING TO RIGHT NOW?
A: Literally, Stevie Wonder is playing in the café I’m sitting in right now, but more broadly, I’m listening to James Ivy, Lontalius, Frank Ocean, Jack’s Mannequin, and Harris Cole (who I’m playing a show with in Brooklyn in March!). I have pretty eclectic taste in music generally.
Q: WHAT’S NEXT, AND DOES IT MATTER IF YOU KNOW?
A: Lots of new music! Lots of shows! Lots of fun!
THANKS INSTUPENDO.

QUESTIONING: LIL TRAPANESE
Tumblr media
Q: WHAT DO YOU DO?
A: I'm a photographer. I make art. DJ sometimes. I don't like the title "creative director" but I guess  I do some of that
Q: WHY DO YOU DO IT?
A: I've always had conflicted emotions about what I do because 80% of the time I feel as if it's not worth it. I don't like being categorized as a "rap photographer". It's cool and all, and it's where I started getting attention for my work. But it's not all I want to be doing right now and nor is it the extent of my talent. I really want to impact and influence others with my art, as any artist does. But I want my work to be timeless.  People tell me a lot that I don't make real art, or that what I'm doing is temporary. The bigger picture is I'm capturing intimate moments. I really want people to remember this shit years from now. I want kids in newer generations, and they kids and grandkids to look back at my photos and be like "aw shit, that's what they were doing in 2017?" Tight.
Q: WHEN DID YOU START DOING IT?
A: I been photographing for like 6 or 7 years.
Q: WHO INSPIRED YOU TO DO IT?
A: The younger me was the biggest influence on the person I am today. I didn't have much support from anyone growing up. Very few people. Never had someone telling me they believed in what I was trying to do. To everyone, it was impractical. My bro Jay B was one of the first people to believe in and help me progress with what I was trying to do. He really the reason I even started taking shit seriously. I was always doubted so it pushed meharder.
Q: WHERE DO YOU DO IT?
A: I travel a lot. I'm everywhere really. I technically live in Chicago but I'm not there too much. I go back and forth to LA.
Q: SPECIFIC CULTURE THAT DRIVES YOUR WORK?
A: I love the hip hop culture. I'm into fashion. Our generation has so much talent.
Q: CANDID OR STAGED?
A: I've always been known for my candid photos. But lately I've been working on more conceptual shit.
Q: WHO YOU LISTENING TO RIGHT NOW?
A: ThouxanbanFauni just dropped a new tape and I've been photographing him for a little whiles now. I'm so proud of him.
Q: FAVORITE ARTISTS TO CAPTURE?
A: Dex, Maxo is cool as hell. Warhol. Fauni.
Q: WHAT’S NEXT, AND DOES IT MATTER IF YOU KNOW?
A: I have a lot of stuff coming up. A lot of collabs that I haven't announced yet.
THANKS LIL TRAPANESE.

QUESTIONING: CARTER ACE
Tumblr media
Q: WHAT DO YOU DO?
A: Hey, I’m Carter and I’m the lead vocalist of the band, Carter Ace.
Q: WHY DO YOU DO IT?
A: Making music is such a second nature to me, so it never really feels like work. Also really helps with my attention since I have a terrible one.
Q: WHEN DID YOU START DOING IT?
A: I started making music in 2014 but I didn’t start diving into my own music until 2015 when we started the band.
Q: WHO INSPIRED YOU TO DO IT?
A: It’s ironic how my mom inspired me to make music as a kid but she’s like also my biggest hater. As a kid she’d take me to a lot of different video shoots and studios she’d be invited to. Then now, my real inspirations are MJ, Frank Ocean, D’Angelo and Ye because they all make creative decisions to innovate as musicians rather than just in the industry.
Q: WHERE DO YOU DO IT?
A: I mainly record vocals in my house with an Mbox and an AKG 214. In all my previous recordings I used an M-Audio usb mic though, but when it comes to live sessions, we’ve been recording at Pop Studios in Northridge or Soundcast Studios in Canoga Park.
Q: FAVORITE SONG YOU’VE MADE?
A: Still to this day, my band and I love the song “Optimism”. I loved it a lot because it was the closest thing we had to making a funk record at the time and for our age it was a big accomplishment. Also I had Jon Bellion’s bass player play on my second verse so that was a big flex.
Q: SPECIFIC CULTURE THAT DRIVES YOUR WORK?
A: I really love avant-garde stuff. I have a line in my new project where I say “I like my avant-garde women, no guard women, no hard-headed…” That’s just how I grew up. I didn’t grow listening to rap. I was listening to makoussa and salsa. I didn’t know what rap was until In Da Club and didn’t truly discover rap until MBDTF.
Q: DREAM COLLABORATION?
A: I’d absolutely love to work with Anderson Paak. I’ve seen the way he works and it’s almost like I do. Also as intimidated as I’d be, D’Angelo.
Q: WHO ARE YOU LISTENING TO RIGHT NOW?
A: I’m listening to “Let It Whip” by Dazz Band. That bass slap on the breakdown is disgusting. I’m jealous of that song, I really wish I created that.
Q: WHAT’S NEXT, AND DOES IT MATTER IF YOU KNOW?
A: As pretentious as it sounds, the next big thing I’m heading for is getting all my homies Grammy nominations. It’s really just filling in the blanks from here.
THANKS CARTER.

QUESTIONING: SAEVANT
Tumblr media
Q: WHAT DO YOU DO?
A: Create subversive content for people who are open to it.
Q: WHY DO YOU DO IT?
A: To provoke alternative thinking and create new and urgent experiences through music and images.
Q: WHEN DID YOU START DOING IT?
A: When I was about 12 I started making IDM music and building websites.  The project Saevant started in 2012.
Q: WHO INSPIRED YOU TO DO IT?
A: Kurt Cobain, Michael Gira, and Isaac Brock are my musical influences... but my inspirations to create music are existentialism and the magick of dualism, present in every piece of life and nature.
Q: WHERE DO YOU DO IT?
A:  At home by myself, same place I master and release everything.
Q: WHO WERE YOU LISTENING TO MOST GROWING UP?
A: Nirvana, Silverchair, Modest Mouse, Metallica, Marilyn Manson, and Pantera.
Q: Do the dark undertones of your sound stem from anything personal?
A: I try to create music that is interpreted and accessed differently by everybody.  The darker music is likely a result of submerging myself in dark music since I was really young.  My dad and his brother were close friends with Pantera since they were teenagers, my uncle actually designed the Dime 333 for Dean and has worked as a guitar tech for major acts like NIN, Fleetwood Mac, and more... so I was immediately exposed to metal and heavy music when I was young, and I was always allowed to blare aggressive music as loud as I wanted... and I had my own guitar in my hands by age 10.  Since dark, aggressive music has always appealed to me, I tend to make music that lets me relive that same experience again.
Q: ANY DREAM COLLABORATION?
A: Nah I’m good.
Q: WHO ARE YOU LISTENING TO NOW?
A:  I listen to the band Swans constantly, and my own music.
Q: WHAT’S NEXT, AND DOES IT MATTER IF YOU KNOW?
A: Aesthma is the next album, accompanied by a few videos.  I am focused on making this my most emotive and thought-provoking material to-date.
THANKS SAEVANT

Q: WHO INSPIRED YOU TO DO IT?

I’m A Karat: Young Thug’s Plan to Take Over the Globe
Atlanta’s Jeffery Lamar Williams is your average man, stemming from a family of eleven children who’s upbringing took place in the Zone 3 projects. Within the expansive mind of Williams lies an extra-terrestrial lifeform so exotic and so foreign that he inhabits his own personal planet. New Earf’s Young Thug is the furthest thing from average and to be honest he is the furthest thing from man. The unpredictability in the alien nation native’s flow, fashion and distinctiveness make any song he’s on or dress he’s wearing to talk about for hours at a time. Barring the fact that the music video for ‘Wyclef Jean’ was an unorganized mess, it was a ridiculously entertaining unorganized mess. For Christ’s sake, he was in the video for exactly 12 seconds eating Hot Cheetos in front of a blue Aventador and it’s still the hottest video of the year so far. Though you can make the argument that it’s too early to get into a topic like that due to January barely being halfway over, this is one of the many steps Thugger has taken leading up to his mega-ultimate-ultra plan for world domination. Okay, maybe I’m getting a bit ahead of myself. There’s no way Young Thug is really an alien, right? There’s no way an alien can be so damn talented, so I’ve come to a separate conclusion which is one that’s far less bold and one that remains within this galaxy. ‘Wanna Be Me’, the outro to Thugger’s first installment of his three-part Slime Season collection, is one of the more ridiculous and downright hilarious songs that he’s had in his vast discography. On the hook he boasts, “I’m stupid flooded with them karats/I got some motherlovin’ karats/I’m a karat!” I’ll admit it, at first I thought he referred to himself as a carrot, you know, like the vegetable. karat (n.) a unit for measuring the fineness of gold As time passed I slowly began to realize what he meant by this; Young Thug is a rarity, a visionary, a genre bender, a wordplay machine, and above all else, a gem. The one of a kind I don’t give two fucks attitude that he exhibits is one that the hip hop scene has had multiple times but something about it this time is special, more special than it’s been in recent memory. As we are still beginning to ring in the new year, we are in a position where there is turmoil in the streets and some form of overblown controversy at whatever angle you turn your head. I think it is time that we, as a nation, join as one in these dark times and look to a bright future. A future where Young Thug does not change, but where he only evolves.
