GW2 Commander Zine qna
SO I’ve got a lot of questions already, I will be adding to this as I get more but thought I’d answer them as there are some repeat questions!
What if I don’t have a commander character?
That’s completely okay! As long as you’re drawing an oc FROM guild wars 2, that’s acceptable too and you’re still welcome to apply! It can be your main, your favourite oc etc! as long as they’re from gw2!
-
I’ve never been in a zine before, what is expected of me?
Firstly, I’m honoured you’d want to join this as your first zine! Secondly, for artists it will be a fully illustrated piece (Full shaded, full colour full body. it is up to you whether it includes just your oc or other ocs!). For writers it will be a fic of at least 3k words! It will need to have a beginning, middle and end - open ended fics are allowed! For other contributors it will be discussed with the individual
-
Would there be a sought-after style for artists? What would that selection process look like?
there is not a specific style - as long as its a full illustration in your style, it counts!
For the selection process, I’m aiming to have 5 moderators at minimum and each of us will vote on each application. Creators will be judged on multiple categories:  Can they complete this piece in time? Do they have completed examples that we can work with? Which race are they looking to create for/how many of this race do we have already? For each race I would like to have an equal amount of creators for all 5 - of course this will be up to how many apply but I want it to be equal and one race not favoured above the other!
-
Will there be a central place for contributors to discuss, share ideas, and the like?
Yes! there will be a discord server
-
Estimated timeline?
at the current moment this is still to be decided! Mod applications will be opening next month, 3 weeks after will be contributor applications that will stay open for a month! Our final release date for the zine is aiming for valentine’s day
-
Will submissions be popularity-based like in other zines?
Absolutely not! Everyone will be given a fair chance and be judged on what they can create NOT their popularity - if you can show you can complete a piece for the zine in time for the deadline, you’re in! And for those that don’t get in, if it does well I’d love to do a volume 2 and you’d get first chance if you wanted in!
-
I would be worried about the commanders being skewed in favor of one or two races over the others.
As I said above, this WILL NOT happen. I will be looking to have an equal amount for each race! This will depend on how many people apply and for what race they’d like to create for but I will be aiming for a balance between all 5!
-
if anything is available physically, do you already have an idea how to manage production in a way that would keep shipping costs prices within acceptable range for everyone? (if production happens in the us shipping to europe is often far too expensive, that kind of thing)
-
In truth? No. I don’t. I will say I am from the UK so it will be shipping from the UK. However, If i don’t get a merch moderator to help me with things like this and is more experienced than I am,  it will be a digital only zine as I don’t want to make a promise that I can do this when I personally know I cannot. I have made merchandise in the past but with a project at this scale I don’t want to make a promise when I can’t guarantee it.
-
What are the mods level of experience with running a zine and what will be the primary method of communication between mods and participants
Currently we don’t have a mods so I can’t fully answer this for when the mods are chosen however as the host: I have been a moderator for zines in the past & been a contributor for over 5 of them as well! The primary method of communication will be through discord. Acceptance/rejection letters will be through email!
-
Are short comics (2-4 pages, or 1-2 spreads) allowed?
Absolutely! I’d love to see some comics! Go wild :D

29th March 1958 saw the death of Sir William Burrell.
I first  learned of William Burrell through my mum in the early 80's, he was born into a shipping family and ran the business with one of his brothers, George after his fathers death.
In 1876 William entered the firm at the age of 15, and on his father's death in 1885 he and his eldest brother George took over the management. the firm was already prospering, but under their shrewd direction it reached a position of international standing in worldwide tramping and in ship management.
The Burrell brothers undoubtedly had the Midas touch. George kept abreast of developments in marine engineering while William specialized in the commercial side. Their fortunes were based on a steady nerve, foresight and breath-taking boldness. The formula was quite simple. In times of depression they would order a large number of ships at rock-bottom prices, calculating that the vessels would be coming off the stocks when the slump was reaching an end. Burrell and Son was then in a position to attract cargoes because it had ships available and could undercut its rivals. Then, after several years of highly profitable trading, the brothers would sell the fleet in a boom period and lie low until the next slump occurred,  it was a simple idea for them and very shrewd, none of their rivals were brave enough to take the risk and the firm went from strength to strength. It was when the firm were at there peak William became one of the most important collectors in Scotland. His interest in art went back to his youth. While still a boy he was already buying pictures, although he used to say in later years that their chief value lay in the frames.
Although it is not known what sparked off Burrell's love of art, there were plenty of opportunities in late 19th century Glasgow for him to form his tastes. A number of collectors were to be found amongst the wealthy Scottish industrialists and shipowners of the time.
An estimate of Burrell's early interests can be obtained from his loans to the Glasgow International Exhibition of 1901, when he was the largest single lender with more than two hundred works. Their range and scope show that he was already a collector of major standing. They included medieval tapestries, ivories, wood and alabaster sculpture, stained glass and bronzes, Roman glass, 16th and 18th-century Dutch, German and Venetian table glass, silver, furniture and Persian rugs. The paintings are by too many artists to mention here without it looking like a shopping list, but Whistler, Manet and Monticello were among his purchases.
Between 1901 and 1911 little is known of Burrell's collecting, apart from his acquisition of some fine pictures, including his first Degas. Unfortunately, at the same time he was selling as well as buying, a policy he was to continue even after the sale of the fleet had removed any major financial restrictions on the scale of his spending on art. In 1902, for example, he sent nearly forty pictures for auction, and among those sold were paintings by Daumier and Manet which are now in the United States.
From 1911 until 1957 Burrell kept detailed records of his expenditure in twenty-eight school exercise books. He made almost all the entries himself, except during the last few months when failing eyesight compelled him to delegate the task to others. These purchase books are an invaluable record of the astounding range and scale of his collecting. Although the entries tend to become more detailed as the years go by, the basic format was established on the first page of the first book. There are separate columns for date of acquisition, description, from whom the item was acquired, its price, date of delivery, insurance and whether photographed. The last column is headed "All in Order" and usually has Burrell's initials.
Burrell was never an easy client. He was strong-minded, liked to haggle over prices and could be very cautious., well what would you expect from a canny Scot! Even dealers with whom he had done business over some years would find him seeking a second opinion on an object they were attempting to sell him. His collection is only bettered by some of the major museums across the British Isles.
Until about 1930 Burrell seems to have been buying merely for his personal enjoyment, with no thought of forming a collection which would be kept together after his death. Until then he continued to sell or exchange paintings, but in the 1930s he formed the idea not only of having a permanent collection but of handing it over to public ownership. Burrell had discussions with a number of interested parties regarding the disposal of the Collection, and eventually, in 1944, it was donated to Glasgow, the city of his birth and centre of his business activities, in the names of himself and and his wife.
A few years later he gave the then Glasgow Corporation ÂŁ450,000 for the construction of a building in which the Collection was to be housed and displayed. The terms of the Deed of Gift as regards this building, however, presented difficulties. Burrell stated that it should be within four miles of Killearn in Stirlingshire and not less than sixteen miles from the Royal Exchange in Glasgow. He felt that the Collection would appear to best advantage in a rural setting and was also deeply concerned at the harm which could be caused by the high levels of air pollution then prevailing over Glasgow. The councillors and Corporation officials were aware of the problems in, firstly, finding a suitable site and then in administering a museum so far removed from the city, but attempts to persuade Burrell to make his conditions less stringent met with little success. Various sites were considered, but the issue was still unresolved at the time of Burrell's death. It was only nine years later, in 1967, when Mrs Anne Maxwell Macdonald presented Pollok House and estate to the City of Glasgow, that a site was at last found.
Sadly, he did not live to see them in the gallery in Pollok Park, where they form such an important feature. He died at Hutton Castle on 29th March 1958, at the age of 96.
A design competition for the museum building in 1971 was delayed by a postal strike, allowing time for the eventual winning architect  Barry Gasson. I have no idea why it took so long to actually get it built, but it’s size was maybe a factor. The building is the second largest post war building in Scotland, the abandoned St  Peter's Seminary at Cardross being the largest. The Burrell Collectioned opened it’s doors in 1983.  So far, more than 1.3 million people have visited exhibitions
The Burrell Collection closed to the public in October 2016 in order to embark on a programme of refurbishment. It was planned to reopen in spring 2021, although covid might has delayed the work and it has been revised

Sci-fi anon here. Appreciate you taking the time to answer my question with such detail! I think you were right about the aesthetic, and the world building structure, but with DA specifically, I think you hit the nail on the head with the idea of the games not being a continuous story about the same character as they were in ME, creating a disconnect in my mind (though Assassin's Creed is one of my fave series, so that alone couldn't be it). I guess I've always thought of DA as just ME but fantasy, which led to me making unfair comparisons between the two.
If you don't mind talking about it more, what aspects about DA do you enjoy more than ME? World building, aesthetic, story, systems?
Hey again anon., no problem.
Honestly DA being ME in fantasy isn’t too unfair, and it def works vice-versa as well, with them being made by the same company and all. The fundamental ways those two series approach worldbuilding, gameplay pillar nesting, and char progression are very, very, very similar. I mean I went to DA Origins after completing the whole ME trilogy, and a few days with was what it took for everything to click and feel familiar. And double that for II.
As for saying what aspects of DA I personally prefer, well, I prefer Mass Effect, so :D I may not be the best to make those arguments. ME stands on a different level for me due to some parts nostalgia and some parts structure; lot of it has to do with the long-form Shepard story across three games, and the general Trekkie fantasy of a mobile mini-hub (read: ship) with all your friends taking you across the universe in search of adventures. That trumps the medieval stronghold skirmishes for me, even though functionally DA games end up doing the same exact thing. But like there’s no accounting for taste, and the texture of it matters to me.
Not what you asked, sorry. World building is just as great in DA, I genuinely think so. Like I said, they have a rich lore that is constructed with the specific aim for the player character to see the pointed moral quandaries peppered within and ultimately engage with them through character-driven story beats. And again on that, your mileage may vary on the quality of writing and authorial intent on said story beats.
The aesthetic is incredibly well executed, especially I’d say with Inquisition, which paid a lot of attention to in-game art and visual identity of various races, architecture, and other cultural oddities like clothing or customs. On a technical level that really stood out compared to Mass Effect’s alien stuff, but again it was a newer game with a much larger scale than the OT.
I mentioned with the combat that it could be more fun in DA due to its classically structured melee and ranged RPG systems leveraging party makeup and power sets and tactical pause and what have you. That’s true, but the mechanics differ drastically from game to game; the combat framework of Origins may feel outdated much the same way ME1 does compared to the refined locomotion and gunplay of 3, but the moment you go to DAII it’s all immediately faster, more fluid and responsive, and sort-of fat trimmed (this also kinda leads into a ME2 analogy I see). To me Inquisition feels like a perfect marriage of the two - the tactical pause is back, powers have better synergy, but it’s totally playable gung-ho without too much chess pondering.
The story is a Big Topic. There is no unifying immediate overarching threat like the Reapers in DA, and the games don’t all take place within the span of 2 years, but there are similar unexplainable slower-moving world-ending events under threat of coming to pass due to various unstable political meddling or supervillain fuckery. And it always comes down to you and your friendship making skills to assemble the fantasy avengers and make tough choices and pull through. Interesting to note here though, that compared to its bookend games, the initial stakes in DAII are much much lower - it is a game about a refugee trying to survive in an oppressive city, and it pretty much squeezes an incredible amount of juice out of that premise. And yet it still ties intrinsically into the overarching state of the continent and franchise characters.
Similar to Mass Effect’s several trilogy-spanning crucial satellite dilemmas like the Genophage or the Geth, Dragon Age has its own few mega-parables shadowing the story and threading through the series, like the ongoing oppression of Mages who hold unpredictable power by the police force of knights who exist to control them. Bioware tries to do a lot with this premise across the games, pushing some uncomfortable IRL metaphors with varying degrees of success. So that part of the Bioware TouchTM is undoubtedly here if you enjoy it, and again, ties into my earlier argument about how most of the (even deep-seated) worldbuilding that gets introduced will eventually become something you engage with critically throughout the games, and that it’s not all salad dressing and Tolkienesque lore with no visible function - something that may understandably be a frightening prospect.
But again, to bring it all back. I’m more of a Mass Effect guy, but I think Dragon Age is great. If you engage with its story ethos critically it has BIG ole holes, and mechanically Origins is probably too dated to even estimate correctly, but that’s all par for the course with Bioware and nothing you’re looking to avoid I’d reckon. I can’t tell you there’s stuff in DA I enjoy more than in ME, but it’s definitely more of the same-ish stuff in an extremely well put-together package that is diametrically opposite in its aesthetic presentation, and that to me is an extremely alluring, interesting, and compelling deal, if not an outright great one.

“Kissing you is all I’ve thought about since the moment we met.” “Oh!” Luke gasped, burying her head further into Calum’s shoulder. Calum was bemused. “Haven’t you seen this movie like ten times?” “Fuck,I think I’ve seen this movie ten times.” Calum would be seriously questioning her life choices if she hadn’t taken into account that every time she’d ever watched it, she’d had the hottest woman she’d ever met pressed against her. That seriously balanced the scales of shitty cinema, in Calum’s opinion.
“It’s just so cute.” Luke sniffed. Calum pretended not to notice her wiping her nose on Calum’s sleeve; she looked cute enough in it to get away with almost anything.
Right now Luke was wearing avocado print pyjama shorts and Calum’s Santa Cruz sweatshirt (despite owning at least 300 separate items of clothing, in Calum’s most conservative estimations), with her blonde hair in a messy bun and the beginnings of a snotty nose. Her eyelashes were glossy with the tears she’d brushed away, and Calum thought she’d still be willing to watch every straight-to-video 00’s rom com ever made as long as it was what Luke wanted.
“Does this seriously not make you emotional? He gave up Paris for her! Paris, Calum!” Luke whined, craning her neck to look up at Calum from her position under her arm, her lithe body laid across the sofa.
Calum smirked. “Come on, babe; you know ‘Wall-E’ is the only movie that makes me feel anything.”
Luke rolled her eyes, but giggled all the same before pressing on insistently.  “It’s so romantic, though. Isn’t this the most romantic thing you’ve ever heard?” “No?” Calum scoffed, settling back against the mountain of cushions that seemed to grow every time they went to Ikea. Then it struck her. “Hang on, are you saying that’s the most romantic thing you’ve ever heard?!”
“Yeah…” Luke let out another dreamy sigh before stilling almost imperceptibly. Oh, shit.
“What?!” Calum said, already looking more indignant than the time Luke had accidentally cheered for Arsenal insead of Liverpool (“Your Liverpool shirt is red, Calum! What the hell is an away kit?! I hate football!”). “Obviously I wasn’t includi-” Luke tried to recover, but Calum was too far gone. “I write the sickest anniversary cards! My last Valentine’s Day card to you? Fuckin’ poetry, Luke! I mean, not literally because that’s lame as fuck, but I am romantic as shit!”
Calum knew that generally speaking, people would consider Luke to be the more romantic in the relationship. Everyone who lived within 5 miles of their apartment had probably heard Luke tell Calum she loved her, or seen her entwine their hands, or pout her lips for a kiss she had to have right that second, at least twice. She was more prone to posting photos of Calum on Instagram with captions that ranged from sweet to thirsty as hell. Every time she attempted to bake for Calum, it would almost always be using a heart-shaped mould or cutter she’d found at the pound shop down the street. And at Calum’s gigs, everyone always knew exactly where she was in the crowd because Luke was yelling about the incredibly sexy bassist with the best basslines in the history of bass at every possible moment.
However, Calum thought her own brand of romance of just as valid, and Luke seemed to like it. Calum was a fan of surprising Luke with flowers, albeit wild bouquets of sunflowers and daisies rather than roses or peonies (“Wildflowers for my Wildflower.”), and of playing records on vinyl that she thought Luke would like - or that reminded her of her girlfriend - while they ate a dinner Calum had made from scratch because she’d seen a recipe online that she knew Luke would love. Calum also trusted Luke in a way that was rare for her, and lying in the dark of the their bedroom, speaking out loud things she’d never told anyone - childhood memories of her parents messy divorce, her deepest fears, greatest dreams, biggest secrets - whilst her girlfriend rubbed comforting circles over her hip and placed gentle kisses on her shoulder, felt intimate and special in a way Calum hoped Luke felt was romantic. And like she said - her card writing skills were sick.
Luke sat up on the sofa, freeing herself from underneath Calum’s arm. She clicked the pause button on the remote, dropping it onto the rug as she threw her hands up in surrender. “I’m sorry, I take it back; you are the most romantic I only meant in, like, movies and stuff! Obviously you are the most romantic and beautiful and I love you!”
Calum sniffed, trying to keep her sad face on without breaking. “Obviously not, as I don’t have a European city to not go to for you…”  Luke saw her girlfriend’s mouth twitch at the corner. Right. She tucked her long legs underneath herself, settling back on the sofa as she spoke. “Like I said, I take it back - I was wrong.”
Calum could count on one hand the amount of time she had heard Luke say those three words during their relationship, and was ready to celebrate a substantial victory, until she clocked the smile spreading across Luke’s face that spelled trouble.
Luke continued in a purposely casual voice. “The actual most romantic thing I’ve ever heard was on our third date, when you drank all those daiquiris and told me that one day you were gonna ‘fucking wife me’.” Calum groaned and tried to sink back into the sofa so it could swallow her whole; this plan was thwarted by all the Ikea cushions.
“Shut up, that wasn’t me. You must have me confused with your other girlfriend. I don’t even drink daiquiris.” Luke’s distinctive laugh filled Calum’s ears; she loved that sound (it was in her top 3 sounds that Luke made), but right now she felt so embarrassed at the memory of her nerves getting the better of her in a Tapas restaurant that she couldn’t really enjoy it.
“Maybe not anymore! But Ashton told me how much of the morning after you spent with your head in the toilet, so I guess it makes sense you gave them up.” Luke teased, her blue eyes bright with mischief.
“I hate Ashton.” Calum mumbled, with nowhere near as much heat as was currently in her cheeks.
Luke’s giggles had taken on a unmistakable air of victory; Calum could not let this stand.
“Right, that’s it; we’re watching ‘Pulp Fiction’!” Calum declared, leaning down to feel around on the floor in the dimly lit living room for the remote where Luke had abandoned it. “Noooo!” Luke whined, reaching out to grab Calum’s wrists as she rose in triumph. “Cal!” She pouted as she missed entirely. It had always made Calum laugh when Luke tried to overpower her in any way; she was clumsy, and she wasn’t quick or strong enough to get the jump on Calum, unless she cheated (which she often did). In the past, Calum had hoped Luke wouldn’t notice the way she clenched her thighs together when the blonde would wiggle against her, bite her lip, whine or pant. Inevitably, as their relationship had continued, Luke had become fully aware of the effect she had on Calum, and now employed her sexuality as a weapon against Calum whenever she deemed it necessary. Nowadays, she tended to cut to the chase, as she was now. Calum barely registered the remote being extracted from her slackening grip as Luke held the grey sweatshirt and her cropped pyjama top up above her chin with one hand. She did register Luke’s small but perfectly formed tits, and wondered briefly what they had been talking about. Luke didn’t let her clothes drop back down to cover her breasts until she’d already unpaused the movie and stashed the remote underneath the armrest on her side of the sofa.
“That...was savage.” Calum deadpanned, shaking her head as she clambered to her feet. Luke put on her most innocent smile (which was not that innocent if you knew her as well as Calum did). “Do you want another drink?” “Yes please, gorgeous.” Luke replied with her eyes still fixed to the screen, her lips moving in the time with the actress on screen with the dodgy bangs. Calum rolled her eyes fondly before making her way to their small kitchen in search of rosé.
She didn’t notice it until she closed the fridge again, but Luke had responded.
Earlier in the day, Luke had used their alphabet fridge magnets to spell out ‘BUY MORE MILK’. Upon seeing this just after lunch, Calum had immediately checked she had the right letters to arrange the obvious reply; ‘NO FUCK U’, giggling to herself the whole time she’d been doing it. She let out a snort, picking up the personalised wine glasses Michael had gifted them when they moved in together. She set off back towards the living room, idly thinking about what movie she was going to demand they put on when this torture was over.
‘NO U’.

Remembering The Fallen
On this date in 1997, a platoon sized element of infantry was ambushed by roughly two battalions of enemy fighters, near and at a remote advanced reconnaissance forward operating base, call sign Whiskey Outpost. Late in the previous day, a call for reinforcement, aid, and retrieval was received from a Major General Owen, Army intelligence, who was overseeing operations aboard Whiskey Outpost and coordinating intelligence gathering about high ranking enemy personnel in the vicinity. Roughneck 2-0 was tasked with moving over land, clearing a path to the Outpost, establishing contact with the General, and assessing the situation. The Fleet Vessel 176 Rodger Young was deployed nearby and tasked with gunnery support and logistical transport.
As the Mobile Infantry elements moved in, they encountered a natural chokepoint, a valley between two high cliff faces. The platoon sergeant, Sergeant Gillespie, unable to raise the Outpost on his radio due to iron oxide and magnesium ferrite deposits in the canyon walls, notified the platoon’s commanding officer, Lieutenant Jean Rasczak of communications failure. Lt. Rasczak appropriately assessed the problem and ordered the sergeant to move up the canyon, gain elevation, and try to raise either the outpost or HQ. Ascending, Sergeant Gillespie stumbled into an ambush position and was subsequently killed; the lose of his radio, being the only long range communications the unit had, forced the platoon to push on toward the objective without being able to notify the Rodger Young that they had made contact and were taking casualties. The only remaining means for communication were the platoon’s internal comms and whatever assets were left at Whiskey Outpost. First squad’s Corporal Rico was assigned acting sergeant per the succession of command.
As Roughneck 2-0 approached the outpost, they found it quiet, front gate ajar, no gate guard, no tower guard in the base’s two observation towers, which doubled as elevated machine gun nests. Inside, the two platoons that had previously comprised the base’s working staff were found slaughtered in a state of disorganized defense, intermingled with the bodies of the enemy. The Lt. immediately ordered that the Outpost’s communications tent (damaged in the initial fighting) be brought up to operational capability, an order executed by second squad’s squad leader Flores. A brief search of the mess and command tents revealed General Owen, still alive, though unfit for command. The search located a tunnel entrance inside the mess tent where the enemy had been able to penetrate the compound from within. It was immediately following this search that two battalions of enemy fighters converged on the outpost from the valley side. The outpost, being situated in the cup of a U-shaped canyon, had natural flank and rear-guard protection, forcing the enemy to confront from a single direction. It was due to this fact that the platoon was able to hold it’s position against the numerically superior force without being immediately overrun.
As the enemy assault began, infantrymen in the observation towers’ machine gun nests opened fire, suppressing the enemy advance and cutting down a significant number of fighters. First squad manned the perimeter wall to the northwest, second squad held the middle wall to the north, and third squad held the wall to the north east, all firing north. The effect of all three squads online and firing, with tower support, initially held off the enemy advance. It is during this period that Major General Owen is killed by the enemy, though his exact time and means of death are unclear. With fighting intensifying outside, Rasczak ordered the acting sergeant to check the status of communications and call for immediate retrieval by Fleet support elements. Flores, in the communications tent, had just finished the repair of the equipment as Rico came rushing in.
Radio communications as recorded by the Fleet battlegroup leader Ticonderoga:
[Roughneck 2-0, Acting Sergeant Rico]: “We are under attack, sir, we need retrieval now.”
[Rodger Young, Unidentified, Possibly a young Commander Turner]: “We have your position as clear?”
[Roughneck 2-0, Acting Sergeant Rico]: “Negative sir, hostile action my location, we need pickup now!”
[Rodger Young]: “What’s your position?”
[Roughneck 2-0, Acting Sergeant Rico]: “Pickup on this transmission.”
[Rodger Young]: “Inside the outpost, that’s crazy!”
[Roughneck 2-0, Acting Sergeant Rico]: “Well I hope you have a crazy pilot. OUT!”
As fighting intensified outside, third squad, on the right flank, already spread thin from simultaneously manning the wall and the observation towers, and having taken several casualties in the previous minute, began to concern the Lt. as to whether they would hold. On the left flank, first squad was beginning to take significant causalities as well. Once informed by Acting Sergeant Rico and Flores that the rescue was inbound, the Lieutenant ordered an organized withdraw, from the perimeter fence to within the compound, consolidating his remaining firepower to maintain fire density.
The outpost, no larger than an acre and a half, was too small by regulations to land a recovery vessel inside. The remaining Mobile Infantry held clear an area, later confirmed by satellite telemetry, that was just 25 yards long and no more than 10 yards across. It was into this makeshift Landing Zone, not designed to take the weight of an aircraft, that the retrieval craft from the Rodger Young attempted to land. At fifty seven feet long, and with only 74 feet of landing space, the retrieval vessel set down squarely centered in the available area. Piloted by Ensign Carmen Ibanez and Commanded by Lieutenant Zander Barcalow, it is to date considered the most precise landing into a hot LZ of any craft it’s size. As the remaining elements of Roughneck 2-0 began to collapse into the retrieval craft, enemy operations below would complicate their withdrawal.
Inside the compound’s main parade ground, enemy demolitions opened up a second tunnel entrance, revealing enemy armor that had been stowed below. Lt. Rasczak became immobilized under the demolition’s ensuing landslide, both legs crushed, weapon lost, and bleeding out. Seeing himself obviously mortally wounded and indefensible, and knowing his troops would sooner die attempting to save him than ensure their own survival, he ordered his second in command to kill him. Acting Sergeant Rico executed the order. For these actions, Lt. Rasczak would posthumously receive the Bronze star for “meritorious actions that preserved the remaining elements under his command”. As the dust settled, the enemy armor, advanced up out of the tunnel, immediately in front of the remaining infantry. As others retreated, second squad leader Flores held ground, using a high explosive charge to stop and destroy the armor in the tunnel entrance, thereby impeding further enemy advance via that route. According to the posthumously issued Silver Star: “while advancing under heavy enemy contact, and in the face of imminent mortal danger, displayed conspicuous gallantry by immobilizing and eliminating the threat from hostile armor elements in the vicinity”. After successfully destroying the armor, Flores retreated under suppressive fire to the makeshift LZ being guarded inside the compound, being wounded four times during the retreat; wounds that would prove fatal during exfiltration.
Covering fire from the Fleet vessel and from the observation towers became ineffectual as more armor elements from the valley knocked in the compound’s walls, and began to fully overrun the facility. Ordered by Lieutenant Barcalow to evacuate, third squad ceased manning the observation posts and began a covered withdraw; though none would make it to the recovery ship. With all surviving elements on board, the craft lifted off under enemy contact and returned to the Rodger Young. Less than a third of Roughneck 2-0 survived the Whiskey Outpost attack, though it is estimated they wounded or killed nearly half of the assaulting force. This incident would preclude more Fleet operations focused on actively suppressing the enemy in the vicinity and in searching for and capturing high ranking enemy personnel.

An additional 404 were shipped in 1928 and 27 more were shipped even later than that. Only 1537 saxophones within this range were shipped in 1927.
#Modern selmer serial number lookup serial number
A search of the actual shipping dates for this serial number range revealed the following: By simple subtraction, 2249 saxophones were allegedly built in 1927. The existing serial number chart showed a range from 5601 to 7850. Let’s take a look at 1927, the earliest year for which full data was available. Finally, it was possible to do a detailed study of each year’s actual sales and compare them the to the information suggested in the existing serial number chart. (1927 to 1975) After several trips to Paris and several thousand hours of research and study, the original shipping data was collected and organized. The first phase of the research was to study the records from the beginning up to the end of the Mark VI era. Whether earlier notebooks were lost or were never kept is unfortunately unknown. The data started at serial #5000 and continued for over 75 years. In most cases, there was no mention of what model was being produced.
#Modern selmer serial number lookup archive
The archive records contain four key elements: But, the fact that all the data still existed was like finding a treasure. Some were neat and detailed and others were nearly illegible and of course, it is all written in French. The archives are comprised of a series of very old and fragile notebooks, written by a variety of people, in a variety of handwriting styles. Once there, the daunting nature of the task became apparent. With a background in statistical analysis and an established record in the study of Selmer history, Douglas was able to secure access to these archives. It is well known that Selmer Paris possesses some archival records but they are not available to the public. Douglas Pipher decided to take on the challenge.Ĭlearly the first step was to collect as much primary data as possible. Was the chart built from specific data or was it just someone’s estimate a guess which eventually became assumed to be an absolute truth? With these questions in mind, the need for a fresh look became clear, to see if there was a way to measure the accuracy, or inaccuracy, of the existing chart. It also seems unlikely that each year’s production ended at a conveniently round number. It seems unlikely that every new model was introduced exactly at the beginning of a new year. But there are problems with the existing chart, such as the timing of the introduction of the different models. Many saxophonists use it as the authority for determining when an instrument was made. The existing Selmer Serial Number Chart has been available on the internet for years.

Fundamental Questions To Ask Before Hiring Professional Movers: Part 1
Once you've bought a home, there’s nothing that could be more stressful than moving. This is why it's a no-brainer to hire a professional moving company to help you with your valuable possessions, especially if you’re making a long-distance or interstate move and you’ve got bulky items to bring with you. Choosing a mover, however, is the tricky part since there are thousands of companies out there that provide a wide range of services. It’s a very important decision to make and could mean the difference between having a smooth relocation and a complete disaster.
Tumblr media
This is when asking the right questions proves to be crucial. You want to make sure you hire a dependable and trustworthy company that will save you a lot of time, money, and headaches. Especially if it's the first time you have hired a mover, here’s a great list of questions you could ask them during the interview so you can easily narrow down your choices. Make sure you get as many of these questions answered in any form of writing. Such precautions will help you identify any red flags and hopefully hire a reputable company that will deliver.
Tumblr media
  1. Is your company properly licensed?
The first thing in your checklist to make sure you choose a trustworthy moving company is to determine whether they are properly licensed. The good thing is that it shouldn't be hard to check. All professional interstate moving companies should have a license number issued by the United States Department of Transportation—their MC # and USDOT #—which should be listed at the bottom of their home page. Likewise, you can also check for the company’s license number and even complaint history at the USDOT Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration database.
On the other hand, local moving companies who only relocate customers within the same state are only regulated by the state, which means they should hold a state license. Just remember that each state has titsown set of moving regulations and license requirements.
Knowing that the moving company is legitimate and reputable will guarantee that they’re compliant with the federal laws, which means it’s highly likely that the move is in good hands and your items will be handled safely.
Tumblr media
  2. Can you show referrals or recommendations?
To avoid moving scams and rogue movers, it's also best to hire movers that have been in business for a few years. And part of your homework is to check for references and recommendations. See if they can show you letters of recommendation from past customers. The moving company representative should be able to provide you with all the information you need should you ask for it.
In this day and age, it’s also easier to check for testimonials, reviews, and ratings on their website. There are also numerous forums and sites where people share their experiences about moving companies. You may be able to know if the movers overpromised, underdelivered or overcharged their customers, although it might be helpful to take any reviews with a grain of salt. Don’t forget to also ask friends and neighbors for recommendations, as word-of-mouth is still one of the most reliable routes to finding a trustworthy mover.
Tumblr media
  3. What kind of liability coverage does your company provide?
It's also crucial to ask what coverage options a moving company offers before deciding to hire them. This is to make sure your belongings are covered in case of a mishap during the relocation. According to FMCSA, interstate movers are required by federal law to offer two types of liability options: thll Value Protection and Released Value Protection.
Under Full Value Protection, your mover is liable for the replacement value of lost or damaged goods in your entire shipment. For instance, if any of your articles are lost, destroyed, or damaged during the move, the FVP requires the moving company to either have the item repaired so that it’s in the same condition as it was before being damaged, replace it with something similar, or give you cash to replace it.
The Released Value Protection, on the other hand, is the most economical protection available since it is offered at no additional charge. However, the protection for this option is minimal. The mover assumes liability for no more than 60 cents per pound per item.
You also have the option to purchase full-value protection or insurance from a third-party insurance company, especially if the mover doesn’t offer it. But before purchasing insurance, the FMCSA recommends checking your homeowner’s insurance policy as well to make sure you’re not already covered.
Moreover, ask to see the moving company’s own proof of insurance, which they should be able to show you if they are legitimate and licensed.
Tumblr media
  4. Do you offer an in-person or in-home estimate?
There are several ways you can get a moving estimate: over the phone, online, or in-person. However, any moving company can only give you rates by phone and not the actual estimates. Getting an in-person or in-home estimate, where a sales staff or a representative goes to your place to perform an on-site virtual estimate, is still the best idea. This way, the mover will see all the items that need to be moved, and can determine any complications that might make the relocation more difficult and more costly. They should be able to check ahead of time the big items that need to be shipped and any potential problems for the moving truck and the crew, such as the presence of low-hanging tree branches, elevators, parking situation, etc. They should also discuss with you any potential problems with the delivery at your new place.
Ask the company what their rate is, and keep in mind that most companies will provide a rate per pound and a distance rate, instead of based on cubic feet. Otherwise, some companies might charge a per hour rate for short distance moves.
The moving company must give you an estimate in writing and provide you with a copy. It should state the name, contact details and address of the company. It should also include all the charges, the payment method, and the agreed delivery dates or time frame of the move. Both you and the mover must sign it to make it an agreement.
Tumblr media
  5. Which services do you offer?
Each professional moving company has a unique menu of services you can choose from when you're planning your move. Here’s a shortlist of a few of the services that they might offer:
Packing and unpacking
Loading and unloading
Custom crating
Transportation for specialty items like pianos and hot tubs
Temporary storage
Furniture assembly/disassembly
Appliance disconnection
Vehicle shipping
Cleaning services
Good, full-service movers will do these things automatically as part of their services, but you may need to confirm exactly what services are provided with smaller firms. Sometimes these services are also known as accessorial charges. This is why you should never assume a moving company offers a service you need. And if any of these services are crucial for your move, you should make sure that service is provided by the company you might hire.
Tumblr media
  6. Are there additional fees? When do these fees apply?
After getting your moving estimate and clearing up concerns about which services the movers will cover, don't forget to ask about potential additional charges. The last thing you’d want is to be surprised by a series of extra charges that showed up in your bill once the move is completed.
Ask the moving company what additional moving services you should expect to be charged for, and when these fees apply. Don’t be afraid to ask as many questions as you can, such as but not limited to:
Is there a charge for stairs?
Is there a charge for heavy or oversized items?
Is there an extra charge for moving things from a basement or from a garage?
Do you charge extra on wet moving days? (They might have to pull out a few tarpaulins.)
Is there a charge for more than 2 floors up or for moving things from the attic?
Will there be an extra charge for travel time to and from my house?
Will you charge me if the building elevator is out of order or  missing in action?
Will you charge me for refueling costs? (Especially for long distance moves)
Do you charge a long carry fee if the crew cannot park the truck close to the entrance of my home?
Just take note that every moving company has its own way of evaluating the fees associated with each move. This is why it’s imperative that you speak with the company representative about all possible hidden fees and charges in advance.
Tumblr media
  7. Do you have the necessary moving equipment?
This might seem obvious to ask, but you want to be assured that they have the proper moving equipment that is required for your specific type of move or situation. You also want to be certain that the professionals will be able to protect your items and move them safely to your new home.
Aside from having the right size of moving truck, they also need to have the proper furniture and appliance dollies, moving blankets, furniture sliders, and all the necessary packing supplies. Special hoisting equipment or more heavy-duty dollies may also be needed for bulky furniture, household appliances, and other extra large items, like a grand piano or a pool table. Ensuring that the moving staff you hire have the necessary moving equipment will not only make the move less complex and dangerous, but will also help them complete the job as scheduled.

  8. Are there things you prefer not to move?
If this is the first time you're hiring a professional moving company, you should be aware that there are a number of items that some movers won’t allow on the truck. They may refuse to move certain things, including photos and photo albums, fragile family heirlooms, plants, flat-screen televisions, fine art, and other valuables. They believe the risk of losing or damaging those precious belongings is too great. This is why it’s important to ask for specific things the movers would prefer not to move so you can plan ahead, pack and bring those items yourself.
Likewise, hazardous materials such as fertilizer, paints, aerosols, pesticides, propane tanks, batteries, pool chemicals, and others are absolutely out of the question because these things are flammable or potentially explosive.

These 3 energy storage technologies can help solve the challenge of moving to 100% renewable electricity
Kerry Rippy, National Renewable Energy Laboratory
In recent decades the cost of wind and solar power generation has dropped dramatically. This is one reason that the U.S. Dept. of Energy projects that renewable energy will be the fastest-growing U.S. energy source through 2050.
However, it’s still relatively expensive to store energy. And since renewable energy generation isn’t available all the time – it happens when the wind blows or the sun shines – storage is essential.
As a researcher at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, I work with the federal government and private industry to develop renewable energy storage technologies. In a recent report, researchers at NREL estimated that the potential exists to increase U.S. renewable energy storage capacity by as much as 3,000% percent by 2050.
Here are three emerging technologies that could help make this happen.
Longer charges
From alkaline batteries for small electronics to lithium-ion batteries for cars and laptops, most people already use batteries in many aspects of their daily lives. But there is still lots of room for growth.
For example, high-capacity batteries with long discharge times – up to 10 hours – could be valuable for storing solar power at night or increasing the range of electric vehicles. Right now there are very few such batteries in use. However, according to recent projections, upwards of 100 gigawatts worth of these batteries will likely be installed by 2050. For comparison, that’s 50 times the generating capacity of Hoover Dam. This could have a major impact on the viability of renewable energy. Batteries work by creating a chemical reaction that produces a flow of electrical current.
One of the biggest obstacles is limited supplies of lithium and cobalt, which currently are essential for making lightweight, powerful batteries. According to some estimates, around 10% of the world’s lithium and nearly all of the world’s cobalt reserves will be depleted by 2050.
Furthermore, nearly 70% of the world’s cobalt is mined in the Congo, under conditions that have long been documented as inhumane.
Scientists are working to develop techniques for recycling lithium and cobalt batteries, and to design batteries based on other materials. Tesla plans to produce cobalt-free batteries within the next few years. Others aim to replace lithium with sodium, which has properties very similar to lithium’s but is much more abundant.
Safer batteries
Another priority is to make batteries safer. One area for improvement is electrolytes – the medium, often liquid, that allows an electric charge to flow from the battery’s anode, or negative terminal, to the cathode, or positive terminal.
When a battery is in use, charged particles in the electrolyte move around to balance out the charge of the electricity flowing out of the battery. Electrolytes often contain flammable materials. If they leak, the battery can overheat and catch fire or melt.
Scientists are developing solid electrolytes, which would make batteries more robust. It is much harder for particles to move around through solids than through liquids, but encouraging lab-scale results suggest that these batteries could be ready for use in electric vehicles in the coming years, with target dates for commercialization as early as 2026.
While solid-state batteries would be well suited for consumer electronics and electric vehicles, for large-scale energy storage, scientists are pursuing all-liquid designs called flow batteries.
Tumblr media

In these devices both the electrolyte and the electrodes are liquids. This allows for super-fast charging and makes it easy to make really big batteries. Currently these systems are very expensive, but research continues to bring down the price.
Storing sunlight as heat
Other renewable energy storage solutions cost less than batteries in some cases. For example, concentrated solar power plants use mirrors to concentrate sunlight, which heats up hundreds or thousands of tons of salt until it melts. This molten salt then is used to drive an electric generator, much as coal or nuclear power is used to heat steam and drive a generator in traditional plants.
These heated materials can also be stored to produce electricity when it is cloudy, or even at night. This approach allows concentrated solar power to work around the clock.
Tumblr media
Checking a molten salt valve for corrosion at Sandia’s Molten Salt Test Loop. Randy Montoya, Sandia Labs/Flickr, CC BY-NC-ND
This idea could be adapted for use with nonsolar power generation technologies. For example, electricity made with wind power could be used to heat salt for use later when it isn’t windy.
Concentrating solar power is still relatively expensive. To compete with other forms of energy generation and storage, it needs to become more efficient. One way to achieve this is to increase the temperature the salt is heated to, enabling more efficient electricity production. Unfortunately, the salts currently in use aren’t stable at high temperatures. Researchers are working to develop new salts or other materials that can withstand temperatures as high as 1,300 degrees Fahrenheit (705 C).
One leading idea for how to reach higher temperature involves heating up sand instead of salt, which can withstand the higher temperature. The sand would then be moved with conveyor belts from the heating point to storage. The Department of Energy recently announced funding for a pilot concentrated solar power plant based on this concept.
Advanced renewable fuels
Batteries are useful for short-term energy storage, and concentrated solar power plants could help stabilize the electric grid. However, utilities also need to store a lot of energy for indefinite amounts of time. This is a role for renewable fuels like hydrogen and ammonia. Utilities would store energy in these fuels by producing them with surplus power, when wind turbines and solar panels are generating more electricity than the utilities’ customers need.
Hydrogen and ammonia contain more energy per pound than batteries, so they work where batteries don’t. For example, they could be used for shipping heavy loads and running heavy equipment, and for rocket fuel.
Today these fuels are mostly made from natural gas or other nonrenewable fossil fuels via extremely inefficient reactions. While we think of it as a green fuel, most hydrogen gas today is made from natural gas.
Scientists are looking for ways to produce hydrogen and other fuels using renewable electricity. For example, it is possible to make hydrogen fuel by splitting water molecules using electricity. The key challenge is optimizing the process to make it efficient and economical. The potential payoff is enormous: inexhaustible, completely renewable energy.

From Your Dearest
Reader x Mark
Word Count: 2,760~ish words idk I didn’t count properly, I know there’s 1,034 “i”s in this fic
Angst, Like really angsty, like get some tissues angsty. Major Angst ahead lol. Like I felt like a horrible person writing this. I want to punch myself in the face.
(Btw I just copied and pasted half of a fic I wrote like idk last year or something and I changed the ending of the story too. So don’t get pissed and call me out if you think I’m lazy or something, mate.)
Tumblr media
We met each other at the grocery store:
“Mum! Who’s that girl!” a small boy asked in while pointing to y/n.
“Oi! Don’t point! That’s rude Mark!” the parent scolded. The boy pouted, he only wanted an answer.
Y/n’s parent bent down to his level, “I’m your mother’s friend, this is y/n, she will be staying at your place for a little bit because I need to do some grown-up things. Is that okay with you?” Mark looked up at his mother with a questioning face, she chuckled and nodded. Mark sneaked a glance at the shy girl that was hiding behind the unfamiliar adult and held out his hand, smiling as he did so,
“Let’s be friends!”
When we entered primary school:
Our parents sent us to the same school, we knew no one else besides each other and some other kids from our neighbourhood. We all ran into our lines, ready to be welcomed into a neat classroom as the bell rang.
“Good morning students! My name is Ms Gonsha, I will be your teacher.” Little Lunch Reference.
The teacher started calling the roll, and after we started our first lesson: Art.
Paint few here, pencils shreddings were being emptied in the bins, glue was being eaten, crayons were being snapped in half.
“Art is my favourite subject” You stated happily to Mark. You and Mark had grown close to each other since the first day they met, they were a troublemaking duo, partners in crime.
“Mark! Come sit with us!” Y/n called over.
It was lunch-time and Mark was sitting on the swing-sets alone, eating his chicken sandwich. You ran over, grabbing his wrist and lunch box, dragging him back to your lunch table with all your other friends.
After you all finished eating, you played tiggy with all the other kids until it was home time.
Highschool - Junior years, a place with a cess-pool full of moody and rowdy kids:
“Boys are better than girls!! We’re stronger!”
“Wrong! Strength doesn’t make someone better! It’s obvious that girls are way better!”
Here we go again, the groups are fighting over the lunch tables. Mark could see that you weren’t having much fun in this, and neither was he. Mark wanted to get out ASAP. Sneaking over, he tugged your uniform. Grabbing your arm, he pulled you away and sitting you under a tree.
“It sucks that you’re taller than me, you’re a girl!”
“Nah, you just haven’t had your growth spurt yet.” You loved teasing Mark with your height, it was typical for girls to be taller than most boys at this age, after all, you just hit puberty.
You and Mark had kept your distance during your time in 7 to 9th grade. Everyone always seems to think that someone was dating even if they were JUST friends.
Finally, Senior year of highschool. We’re almost mature and fully grown adults, graduation on our minds:
It wasn’t a surprise that you two got shipped a lot in school. Almost the entire year level knew you guys were the best of best friends. It was obvious too, you two were the clowns of the class.
However, that was when you found out you had a disease in your cardiovascular system. A sickness that affects the function of the human heart that could lead to the grave, if not treated. Nobody knew this, not even Mark, only the people in your family.
The first time you found out, you were crushed, devastated.
Mark was always there by your side though. He never knew the reason for why you were also so upset, tired or growing weak so suddenly. It took a while to pull you out of your hole of misery, but he did.
Through this journey, you learnt many things about appreciation, value and time. You experienced many emotions, most of which were new to you. However, one emotion struck you hard.
This emotion or ‘feeling’ is the driver of passion, anger, desire, lust, insanity or spirit within many people.
This feeling is known no other than ‘love’.
Which one day lead to you leaving a secret love letter in a special someone’s locker on Valentine’s Day.
University and College, we’ve been separated, but we were only a few blocks away from each other. Is this fate that we’ve been together for so long?:
Laughing filled the dorm room.
“HAHAHAHAHA, STOP IT NOW MY STOMACH HURTS.” one of your colleagues yelled. You just cracked one your all-time joke, the best joke you had used since you were young.
Life was good, well, except for the fact that you still had the heart disease and still never told Mark how you really felt about him. It was too late for that now.
Since you guys were separated into different study centres, he managed to find a girlfriend. Well, the girlfriend found him really. It hit you hard the moment he told you, but you were happy for him, even though you felt a BIT bitter. read: very
The future - the one thing no one can correctly predict, nor can they promise success or failure. This powerful thing contains the fate that could send you to the streets or lead you to your dreams:
You were happy, we had your dream job, moved overseas and you were still young. Mark had made it into SM Entertainment. He is in a group called NCT. Not only did he debut but he did it THREE times, too!(and possibly more in future). Another thing was that he wasn’t dating anymore, the girl he went out with turned out to be a mongrel.
ClichĂŠ or not, she was a backstabber and used him to get what she wanted: to make her ex jealous. Leaving Mark dangling with insincere memories.
You still loved him. You still looked at him with all the love in the world. All the love the universe could give you. The pure, innocent, puppy love waaaay back in highschool.
Halfway through the year, you got an emergency call to go to the hospital.
“Miss (your last name), I’m afraid your heart can’t take it anymore, you still have long left. We estimate you to only live 1 more year unless we find a matching heart donor.” the doctor said in a stern tone.
There. That was the moment. The sentences that made the cookie crumble.
You broke down, your life was perfect the way it was, a loving best friend, a wonderful job, a beautiful home. What did you do to deserve this?
Later that week, you manage to find courage. After getting a grip on yourself, you decided to go to Mark’s dorm to tell him the long-awaited news.
3 knocks on the door were all it took for you to suddenly hear someone storming to the door, flinging it open.
“WHY DIDN’T YOU TELL ME EARLIER?!!” Mark screamed. You saw that he had tears on his flushed, rosy cheeks, glassy, swollen eyes and red tinted nose. You glanced behind him, seeing a wire bin, filled with squishy tissues, probably from runny snot and tears.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t want to–”
“I AM YOUR FRIEND. No. YOUR BEST FRIEND. FOR HOW MANY YEARS?! I THOUGHT YOU WOULD TELL ME THESE THINGS!” you’ve never seen Mark like this in a long time. He was broken, roaring out all his bottled anger and frustration.
You were about to say something when he embraced you in a tight grasp.
“I’m sorry. I’m sorry for not being there, I’m sorry for yelling….” you felt your shoulder getting wet, and lead him. Sitting him down on the sofa.
You calmed him down and consulted him. You lightened the mood a little by telling Mark his favourite joke. Light sounds of laughter were heard throughout the night.
Mark decided to let you stay at the dorms for the night.
You only had 3 months left, I promise to give you everything, even if it kills me:
You had never felt so alive for so long. Mark had shown you places you never thought you’d see, both physically and spiritually. Nothing was on your mind but what was happening at the moment. Mark had taught you how to live - to live in the present and not worry about the future or dwell in the past.
After the many adventures, the both of you had been on, Mark said that he had to start promoting with NCT again. You hadn’t seen him for almost 2 months. The first month he had some issues to sort out with his company, before meeting you again. However, it was only a short visit before he had to return to Canada to visit his family. Staying there for 1 month.
You received a letter from the hospital, saying that you were blessed. They had finally found a heart donor that matches you!! You were so happy and in complete bliss. You wanted to call Mark and tell him about the notice, but he didn’t pick up. You tried again for the next few days, he still never picked up.
The night sky shone through the window as you laid in the hospital bed. You checked your phone one last time before you decided to sleep. Then you realized Mark had finally contacted you by text.
Mark: I’m so sorry y/n, I won’t be able to make it to you on time. I hope surgery will go smoothly. Trust my heart.
I’m sorry, last goodbyes are always difficult. Please know that I’ll be watching over you:
The day finally came. You were getting your heart transplant. As you entered the operation room, you were scared, but you thought of the text Mark sent, it calmed you just a little.
When you healed, the first place you went to was Mark’s dorm. You continued knocking. Until a very sleepy Haechan swung open the door.
“Who are you, and why do you have to visit us at such an ungODLY HOUR on the weEKENDS!”
“MorNING HAECHAN!! Is Mark here?!”
No answer.
You cocked your head at Haechan’s reaction. Usually, he would’ve given you a snide remark or joke about what Mark was up to. However, this time he lowered his head. Shuffling back inside, leaving the door wide open for you to come in.
You run in the living room, not a sign of Mark. Just Jaehyun, Doyoung and Taeil watching a movie. They turned to you, Doyoung opened his mouth to say something but you heard someone call out in the kitchen. Waving politely to the three boys sitting on the couch, you headed towards the kitchen.
“Hi Taeyong, Yuta, Winwin! How are you all?”
“Hi y/n! Back so soon? Shouldn’t you be resting after your surgery?” Taeyong asked, surprised by your greeting.
“It’s all good! The doctors said that I’m fully recovered and that I should be good to go.” You happy replied.
Taeyong smiled, “That’s good! Oh, can you pass those bowl to Sicheng and Yuta? They’ve been starving all day.” yuwin
“Sure thing.” You went over to Taeyong and carefully carried the 2 bowls of steaming phở to Yuta and Winwin, who were sitting on the kitchen bench.
“Thanks, y/n!” They said in unison, before starting to scoff down the food.
“Oh! By the way, do you guys know where Mark is?” You curiously asked.
Just before you finished talking, Yuta started choking on the rice noodles, causing Sicheng to panic.yuwin Taeyong spun around, accidentally knocking over the bowl full of water and bean sprouts.
“Ah- y/n, did he not tell you?” Taeyong suddenly asked, not caring about the mess he made on the floor.
“Whats all the commotion about?” Before you could even form a response, Johnny rushed into the kitchen, “Is everything okay in here guys?... and Y/n?”
There was a long silence, the tension began building up slowly.
Taeyong bent down and started cleaning up, “Well, we were on the topic about... Mark.”
Johnny’s face dropped. His usual cheery attitude seemed to have faded away. “Oh.”
You couldn’t take it anymore, you were confused and frustrated. You now had a bad feeling growing in your gut, “Guys! I just want to know where Mark is! Did something bad happened to him while I was gone?? I’m lost...”
Straightening himself up, Taeyong signalled to Johnny to clean up whatever was left of the mess on the floor.
“Come with me, y/n.”
Slowly, you were guided into his room, then left alone. You slowly twisted the knob.
It was completely different to the last time you saw it. Lifeless, boxes stacked in neat towers, the bed covered with a large plastic sheet. His roommate, Haechan, no longer was in the room and had probably moved into a different room with another member.
You walked around the room, observing everything closely. Everything was packed up, either wrapped or boxed. You passed his desktop. His phone laid there alongside his laptop and headphones. What seemed like hundreds of pages, containing messy scribbles of passionate lyrics and doodles, stacked neatly in a pile.
You tip-toed over to his bed. No blanket or pillow, just the bare mattress covered by a plastic wrap. You checked under his bed, feeling more sentimental than ever.
There you saw his beloved guitar. His favourite pair of sneakers and a shoe box. However, that caught your eye was the shoe box. It had a ribbon hanging out from it. Letting your curiosity taking over the best of you, you carefully pulled out the box.
You picked it up carefully and placed it on his bed. Warily opening the lid, you were presented with a number of items the box contained. You looked through the many polaroids of Mark and the other NCT members. Some of them have cute little messages written behind them. Then you found a framed portrait of him in Canada, posing with his family during Christmas.
You smiled warmly, he was always close to his family and loved them dearly. You placed the frame down next to the box with the utmost care and continued exploring through the box.
You then found another framed portrait, this time it contained you and Mark. You stretched your head, thinking of they he would frame such a photo like this. It was taken on the day that he officially debuted, when ‘The 7th Sense’ was finally released to the world. In the picture, Mark was giving you a piggyback, your hair wild and tossed from the wind.
Putting that portrait down next to the one of his family. You gave one last look in the box again, seeing a familiar red card. Picking up the card, you opened it. Skimming through the message inside it, you realised that it was the same love letter you wrote to him in high school. But you noticed there was more writing on the back. This time, with Mark’s handwriting;
Hello, my wonderful Y/N!!
If you’re reading this, it must mean that the surgery went well! :D
Haha, jokes aside, I’m sorry I wasn't there to see you going in but I hope you weren’t too nervous. I’m so, so sorry, be happy and smile for me okay?
This love letter... I always knew this letter was from you y/n, I always had. I’m not as dumb as you think I am ;)
I loved you since 7th grade and wanted to confess to you so so so badly for all these years. But I was a coward I guess. A chicken, a fool, a dullard, call me whatever you want, but when I heard you had that heart disease, I wanted to make it up to you. So I made it my goal to get rid of it.
I searched for the perfect heart donor. I searched, I really did, far and wide to find one. But perhaps I’m just unlucky because I never found one. However, after I became an idol, I had to do health checks. When I got my results back, I was shocked to see that we had a match!
I informed my company and needed to visit my parents to confirm my decision, it took a while, but here we are.
If you haven’t figured it out yet, yes, I am your heart donor. Jeez Y/n, I thought you were smarter than that.
I may not have been the perfect best friend or your maybe future husband/boyfriend, but I least I can be with you to the end of time.
My heart will keep you going! So please, look after it and look after the boys of NCT! I’ll miss you... I hope you’ll miss me too...
From your dearest, Mark Lee♡
Fucking idk whether to cry or cringe.

How Long Does An Apartment Renovation Take?
A step-by-step guide and timeline for a one-bedroom apartment renovation
We’ve covered the expected timelines for kitchen renovations and bath renovations, but how long does an entire apartment renovation take? Since bathrooms and kitchens are usually the most time-intensive spaces to redo, the timeline for renovating a one-bedroom apartment is not much longer. Another bonus: the more spaces there are, the more opportunity there is to implement economies of scale and to multi-task! This approach allows you to save both time and money.
If you’re considering spacing out several projects (for budgetary reasons), you should consider doing them all at once. While it’s a larger sum upfront, it’ll likely be a better value for your money. For example, while you’re waiting for your cabinets to arrive, your contractor can paint the bedroom or install baseboards. And while they are waiting for the paint to dry, they can install tile in the bathroom…you get the picture.
As always, size and complexity determine how long an entire apartment renovation will take. If you aren’t moving walls or changing electrical or plumbing, your apartment renovation will be on the shorter side. On average, you should allocate about two to four months for on-site work in a top-to-bottom one-bedroom apartment renovation. Sweeten matches home renovation projects with vetted general contractors, offering advice, support, and up to $50,000 in renovation financial protection— for free.
Apartment Renovation Timeline: Pre-Construction Phase
While the attention is usually on the most visible construction phase, there is a lot to be done before then. Here are the details on each box you’ll need to check before breaking ground on the project.
STEP 1: Close on your property (1-3 months)
Many homeowners are in-contract or preparing to close on a property when they begin the process of planning a renovation. If this is you, don’t worry: there’s a way to get it all done. As one Sweeten post explains, you should wait until you have closed on the property, with keys in hand, before doing anything. If you’re in a hurry—wait until you’ve at least signed the contract before beginning the design process.
STEP 2: Post your renovation project on Sweeten (1-3 days)
First things first. Once you’re in contract, you should post your project to Sweeten and begin soliciting bids. On the Sweeten site, add the details about the space you want to renovate, your inspiration photos (optional but useful for our matchmakers), and any other information that would help Sweeten find your perfect contractor. You will receive 3-5 matches within three days, with links to check out contractors’ profiles online. Now’s your chance to take a look at testimonials from clients and photos of their past projects to see whether they might be a good fit.
STEP 3: Schedule site visits and solicit bids (1-3 weeks)
Once you’ve previewed the Sweeten contractors’ profiles, and have decided you’d like to set up a meeting(s), our online scheduler will give you a two-week window to mark your available dates for a site visit. Both you and the contractor(s)  will receive an email confirming your available times, by which the contractor(s) will reach out to you to confirm a date.
An on-site visit is the best way for a contractor to understand the scope of the project, the physical possibilities, and limitations of the space, and for the two of you to see if you hit it off! (This guide is a useful read for understanding the key info necessary to secure the most accurate bid.) After you schedule your on-site visit, check out our blog post about how to prepare for the meeting. You should expect a written bid within 5-10 business days after your visit.
STEP 4: Level bids and choose a contractor (1-2 weeks)
Once all the written bids have come in, it’s time to compare and contrast! This primer on leveling bids might come in handy, as well as this one about labor-only versus all-inclusive bids. If you have follow-up questions, now is the time to ask. You can also schedule time with a Sweeten project advisor to walk you through the various bids and weigh in on the selection.
STEP 5: Sign the contract and finalize construction schedule (1 week)
Once you’ve decided on a contractor, he or she will put together a contract for you to review. This will typically include a description of the work to be done, an estimated timeline for completion, as well as the timing of payments throughout the project.
STEP 6: Obtain permits and approvals (ranges widely)
Of all the steps where hiccups or delays might occur, this is it. Obtaining the correct permits and board approvals have held up many a renovation, but don’t be daunted: our experts are well-versed in navigating these processes and can advise you on how best to achieve your renovation goals with the least amount of hassle. If you’re moving plumbing or gas lines, you’ll need an architect and additional DOB permits. Sweeten homeowners have reported obtaining approvals in as little as two weeks—but it’s more common for it to take a couple months.
If you live in a stand-alone house, you won’t need to worry about building board approvals, but you’ll still need the requisite city permits for any electrical or plumbing work to make sure that everything is up to code.
STEP 7: Source materials (ranges widely)
If you are responsible for sourcing all or some of the materials in your renovation, be sure to place the orders as soon as the design plan is finished. Certain items have long lead times, and you don’t want that one faucet to hold up the entire renovation. If time is a concern, look at what’s currently in stock and ready to ship. Speak with your contractor about timing the product delivery to coincide with time of installation.
STEP 8: Tell your neighbors you’re renovating (15 minutes)
Be a good neighbor and warn yours that a renovation is beginning imminently. Tell them what to expect and how long the project is slated to last. It’s always easier to stomach the disruption when you know there’s an end in sight! It doesn’t hurt to bring some sweets, a bottle of wine, or a gift card for a local coffee shop. When the reno is over, invite them over!
Apartment Renovation Timeline: Construction Phase
While most of the steps under “Construction” are your contractor’s responsibility, it’s important to understand what should be happening when. The most important steps you’ll be in charge of here are making scheduled payments to your contractor (as outlined in your contract), and keeping your schedule open for several hours a week to answer questions about details or changes that come up over the course of construction.
STEP 9: Time for demolition (2-5 days)
Out with the old! Now that you’re done with the paperwork, it’s time for your contractor to pick up that sledgehammer. Be sure to protect the items that are staying with tarp or plastic, and get to work tearing out everything else. Depending on how large your apartment is, and how extensive the renovation, this shouldn’t take more than two to five days.
STEP 10: Reroute plumbing and electrical (2-4 days)
In a 2017 national survey conducted by Sweeten, 62% of respondents named finding hidden problems in their home as a top renovation fear. Now that you’ve stripped the space down to the studs, it’ll be easy to get new plumbing or electrical where it needs to go. Consider whether any plans should be altered now, since you’re able to see what’s behind the walls.
STEP 11: City inspections and sign-offs (1-4 days)
If you needed city permits for electrical and/or plumbing work, you’ll need inspections and a sign-off before closing the walls. (Check out what the city has to say about plumbing permits here, and electrical permits here.) While a master plumber can typically sign off on pipework for water lines in the case of a no-show by the city inspector, an inspector must examine and approve any work on gas lines. You are not allowed to close up the walls and move onto the next phase of the project until this inspection happens. With electrical work, inspectors generally are scheduled for visits once the project is 100 percent complete, and they will check the electrical panel, junction boxes, and outlets. (Note that sometimes, because of city bureaucracy and delays, your electrical inspection may be rescheduled two or three times.) Check with your contractor or architect about what your project requires.
STEP 12: Floor installation (5-12 days)
To prevent having to redo the floors if you decide to reconfigure your space in the future, make sure that the flooring is consistent throughout, even if some of it will be hidden. After the floors are in, you’ll add new baseboards.
STEP 13: Installation completion (5-20 days)
Install the kitchen, usually in this order: cabinets, appliances, fixtures and lighting, counters, backsplash, and cabinet hardware.
Install the bathroom, including the tub, vanity and sink, toilet, and any built-in shelving. Tiling, lighting, and hardware usually come last.
In the hallways and bedroom, if you are doing basic painting and touch-ups, the work will be fairly minimal compared to the kitchen and bath. If you are adding custom, built-in shelving or paneling, plan to add a few extra days.
Possible delays: aspects of this may vary, depending on site conditions and the arrival time of the materials.
STEP 14: Clean-up (1 day)
Typically, contracts allow that spaces should be left in “broom-swept” condition. However, you may want to hire post-construction cleaning specialists to make sure that your new floor is clean enough to eat off. For a full apartment, plan on requesting at least two cleaners to work at the same time so that it can be finished in one working day.
Apartment Renovation Timeline: Post-Construction Phase
The finish line is in sight! But don’t forget these last—but important—steps.
STEP 15: Final walk-through with the contractor (1-2 hours)
Review the work with your contractor: try all the drawers and doors, look closely at the edges and finishes, and make sure everything is working the way it should. If there are any problems, point it out and add them to the punch list. The contractor will either fix it on the spot (if it’s minor) or set up another time to return. Sweeten’s founder + CEO, Jean Brownhill, recommends keeping notepads in each space, and not speaking to your contractor for two weeks during this time. Instead, take notes of what needs fixing as you live in your new home.
STEP 16: Punch list items (1-10 days)
Depending on what the items are, this step could take anywhere from a day to several weeks. It depends on the items left: are you straightening a cabinet door, or waiting on installing an out-of-stock item? When it’s on the long side, though, it’s usually due to back-ordered items. Otherwise, your contractor should be able to return and fix everything in a few days.
STEP 17: The final payment (10 minutes)
You’ve (hopefully)! made installments throughout the renovation. When the last item on your punch list is complete, it’s time to pay the remaining percentage to your contractor!
Ready to renovate your apartment?
This timeline provides a detailed look at the various aspects of renovating and a range of how long each step should take. While some factors may be outside of both your and the contractor’s control, the key is isolating the steps that you think might be obstacles in advance, and allotting more time to get them done.
