Everyone thought that Y/n Y/l/n and Steve Rogers just didn’t have a particular affinity for each other. If you asked Y/n, she would say she didn’t have any issue with him. If you asked Steve, he would say he didn’t know what had gone wrong. They had worked great together for the first few months of being Avengers together, in fact Y/n had gotten along with everyone. The issues between the two came to light at one of Tony’s parties
”So, Y/n, are you crushing on anyone?” Nat asked, causing Bucky to raise his eyebrows and Wanda to nudge her.
“You wish,” Y/n rolled her eyes, smile playing at her lips. She had taken another shot of something strong minutes before, and she was most definitely drunk.
“Hundreds of people work for Stark, you can’t pick one?” Bucky snorted knowingly. Y/n shot him a look.
“They’re all annoying. And I see them too much. You know who is really really really-“ Y/n hiccuped slightly, stuttering. “Annoying? STEVE. I know he’s from the 20s and all but he speaks so prim and proper. He doesn’t curse! I know it wasn’t popular in the 20s but you have to live a little,” Y/n rambled, continuing to make fun of the way Steve talked. Bucky listened amusedly, Wanda and Nat glanced at each other confused, they thought her and Steve were friends. Y/n finished her rant, then looked at Nat thoughtfully. “I’m going to bed.” She turned away from her friends. She started to go towards the elevator, but decided to make a little detour to the bar. The bartender smiled at her.
“What can I get you?”
“Whiskey on ice, please,” Y/n grinned. As soon as the glass was in her hand, she downed it and gently laid it back down on the counter. Talking or thinking about Steve made her need an extra drink or five. “Thanks.” This time she actually made her way back to the elevator, tapping her foot impatiently. As the doors opened, she felt some weird urge to turn around. She turned to glance over her shoulder, and locked eyes with Steve. Bucky was standing next to him, most likely discussing Y/n’s rant over his speech. She whipped around, slightly angry at herself and very frustrated with Steve. As she stepped into the elevator, she fumed. What right did Steve have to be so fucking perfect? So cool? Being his friend made her so so happy, but she would rather blow it up because it also made her deeply sad. It would never be enough to just be Steve’s friend, and the thought that she would never have him turned any feelings she had for him into hate. When she finally went to bad that night, she dreamed of sweet blue eyes, her hands in blonde hair, and kisses. When she woke up to find an absence of a certain someone’s lips- well there isn’t a way to explain the disappointment.

The next few weeks were awkward to say the least. Steve and Y/n barely spoke except on missions. Everyone else just ignored whatever had gone wrong, but Bucky had a knowing smirk to throw at the two whenever he passed them. “Alright everyone,” Tony sighed as the team sat in the meeting room. “Great job on the mission. We’re having a large party tonight at a private hotel. Addresses are already in your phones, this is non-negotiable.” Y/n almost groaned. Parties clearly weren’t a good idea, but she knew it was a special occasion.
“Why are we having another one?” Y/n raised her eyebrows, smile playing at her lips.
“Well fuck you too, Y/n,” Bucky grumbled from his spot next to her. She snickered before wrapping an arm around his neck.
“I’ll bring the birthday cake, Barnes, I didn’t forget.” He rolled his eyes and pinched her, making her throw herself back. She tripped and fell into whoever was sitting on her other side, practically sitting in their lap. Y/n laughed and pushed off the Avenger to face them, hands on their firm chest. “Sorry- that was totally Bucky’s-“ she cut off as she turned to look into Steve’s ocean blue eyes, swallowing. He smiled concernedly. Whatever look was in her face made that smile disappear real quick as she jumped off of his lap.
“Meeting concluded, you’re all helpless,” Tony threw his hands in the air and walked out, most of the other Avengers following. Y/n struggled to speak to Steve while Bucky quietly slipped away.
“I’m going to kill you Bucky,” Y/n shouted at him, cheeks burning as she turned away from Steve and ran out the door after him. Meanwhile Steve put his head on the table, breathing out slowly.
“You should’ve seen the look on your face!” Bucky struggled to breathe from laughter as he stumbled down the hallway.
“Fuck off Barnes,” Y/n muttered, face red.
“It’s like watching a seven year old bully their crush,” he wiped a tear off his face.
“Whatever. Why can’t he just get a girlfriend? It’s even worse that he’s still single,” Y/n grumbled as they stopped in front of her room. Bucky shrugged as he shoved her into it. She turned to him, “seriously Buck, how can someone that perfectly perfect be single?!”
“Get ready, see you at the party. My cake better be chocolate,” Bucky winked and slammed the door shut before turning to walk down the other hall to his room. He started laughing again as Steve turned the corner, hand scratching the back of his neck, ears bright red. Steve glared at him.
“What?”
“Jesus, you’re so red. She barely touched you and you’re acting like a fool,” Bucky kept laughing as he walked down the hall while Steve watched, annoyance on his face and heat growing even more.

To say Tony couldn’t plan an epic party, one even Bucky couldn’t dislike, was a blatant lie. Tony had booked an entire hotel for the Avengers, their families, and whoever else Bucky wanted. This actually amounted to a surprisingly large amount of people. The hotel bar and dance floor was relatively packed. Y/n decided not to drink anything super strong tonight, sticking to Shelley Temples with a tiny bit of vodka in them. She moved around the room, switching between dancing and talking with people. She actively avoided wherever Steve was, especially after the whole ordeal with her literally falling into his lap. She made her way over to Bucky, Natasha, and Wanda, heels in her hand. Bucky was protesting Natasha’s attempts at putting a cone on his head that said ‘birthday boy’.
“How’s the party so far?” Wanda asked, ignoring the antics of their other friends. Bucky huffed as he finally let the hat sit on his head.
“Looks like you’ve been pretty successful avoiding people,” he raised his eyebrows.
“Well I’m talking to you now, so clearly not that successful.” Nat snickered at that remark.
“Insulting me at my own party? Ouch,” Bucky dipped his drink.
“I still can’t believe we went from the Avengers literally being broken up after the Accords to Tony being your best bud,” Y/n shook her head.
“Hey! Second best bud would you, Steve will always be my right hand man,” Bucky protested. Y/n scoffed.
“What am I then, huh?” Y/n asked.
“A pain in the ass,” Bucky snorted. Y/n gave him the middle finger, smirking. “Nah, you’re my female best friend, basically the woman version of Steve.”
“Someone say my name?” Steve appeared next to Bucky and Y/n. Bucky grinned. Y/n met Steve’s eyes briefly, her heart jolting.
“Unfortunately,” Nat rolled her eyes dramatically, grinning.
“What have you been up to, Steve?” Wanda smiled. “See any pretty girls?”
“Only one,” he shrugged. Y/n almost spit her drink out there.
“Who?” Bucky snickered at Y/n’s face. Steve shrugged. Y/n almost dropped her drink as a hand grasped her own. It was much larger and warm, and surprisingly gentle. Steve was nervous as he interlocked he fingers with hers, waiting to see if she would pull away. She didn’t, instead she slightly tightened her hand. The conversation was still going between the three of their friends. Y/n glanced over to Steve, face unreadable. Steve was a blank slate, and Y/n couldn’t tell if he was just messing with her. The thought of that hurt, so she started to pull away. Steve held firm though, and instead walked off, her hand still in his. She followed tentatively, looking behind her for help. Bucky, Wanda, and Nat we’re lost in their own worlds, not noticing their two friends disappearing. Steve and Y/n walked silently, music fading as they reached the elevator hotel. They waited in silence as the doors opened and dinged, then closed on them. Steve pressed the top floor. About 10 seconds into the ride, he pressed the stop button, startling her. She realized they were still holding hands when she finally pulled away, walking towards the buttons.
“What the hell, Steve?” She turned to him.
“I had to make sure you couldn’t leave,” Steve swallowed, scratching the back of his head.
“Why?” She challenged.
“Because I need the truth and I can’t have you running away from me. I can’t have myself running either,” he admitted.
“What truth?”
“Why do you hate me?” He breathed out roughly. She met his ocean eyes once more. She studied his pupils, confused at whatever emotion was storming within them. Was it hate? No. It looked almost like- like pain. She froze at that realization, and searched his eyes again. God she couldn’t get over the blue, the rough yet calmness of them, the urge to sink and drown and die in Steve Rogers was so overwhelming.
“I don’t hate you.” Her voice came out rougher than she intended. He ran his hand through his hair.
“Who are you trying to convince, you or me?”
“I don’t know.”
“Why is the way I speak weird?” He questioned.
“You should take that as a compliment!” She argued. His mouth dropped open.
“A compliment?”
“And you! You held my hand, you don’t even think about the consequences of your actions!”
“ I didn’t mean to upset you.”
“I’m not upset.”
“Please say it,” Steve practically begged.
“Say what?!”
“ANYTHING! God anything, Y/n,” Steve put his hands over his face. She was shocked at his outburst. Cool, calm, collected Steve was upset.
“Steve, turn around, face the wall,” Y/n mumbled. He looked at her confused.
“What?”
“Just do it for the love of-“ she put her hands on his shoulders and turned him, before backing up slightly. “Okay, I, uh.” Her heart was beating out of her chest. “I- wow this is rough. Okay. Rogers, Steve, Steve Rogers. Stevie.” He swallowed at that nickname. “Stevie, I can’t say anything to your face.”
“We’ve established that,” he mumbled. She huffed at his words, but stepped closer and put her forehead on his back. She played with the back edge of his shirt nervously.
“Well, you’re really cool, okay, you’re funny. You- I can’t say anything to your damn face because you are so so SO fucking gorgeous. I don’t hate you- I’m just mad that I can’t have you, and okay maybe I hate that I can’t have you. You make me so happy though, and I can’t be friends with you, okay?” She ranted, gripping his shirt tighter as tears slowly dripped onto the floor. Steve turned around, but she kept facing the floor.
“Not okay. Actually, okay,” Steve replied. She looked up at him questioningly. His eyes were sparkling. “I don’t want to be your friend either.” She sucked in a breath, pain pulling at her chest. “I want to be so much more than that. I want to be your boyfriend, hell maybe your husband one day. I want to love you, and be with you, and,” he glanced up and down at her dress and leaned in, breath fanning her ear. She shuddered as he whispered. “I want to ravish you.” He pulled back, distancing himself, but she refused to let him. Their lips crashed together as she threw her arms around him, causing him to stumble into the elevator buttons.
“I want to be with you too, Steve.” They kissed again, smiles on both their lips.
“By the way,” she groaned as he pulled away. “You are too.” She wrapped her hands around his waist.
“I’m what?”
“Gorgeous.”
