Calling the Cornelia Funke fans to arms
Many of you have probably seen the absolutely inappropriate new covers for the upcoming edition of the beloved Inkworld trilogy (if you haven't, you can check them out here, but don't sue me if your eyes burn):
Cornelia has confirmed today in a livestream at @buchhandlung_tintenherz on Instagram that these are the OFFICIAL covers and she DOES NOT LIKE THEM AT ALL. She is reluctant to fight the publisher on her own, who claims that "loads of bookstores" said they "loved" their design for "a fresh new start for the series". (I don't even need to say that the bookstore hosting the stream passionately hated the cover.)
So the author can't sway the publisher, but you know who might? You, the people they count on to buy the book. There are various ways you can tell them that you won't buy the books the way they look at the moment and I encourage you to use as many of them as you can (but please do remain respectful of the publisher and their vision. Threats that go beyond boycotting the books and insults would harm our case!!!!):

We know that Jacob and Will are relatively fluent in German due to their grandfather speaking German with them and reading them Grimm's fairytales. I think either Jacob picked up French or he and Fox communicate in German.
I also believe that Will and Nerron were using that language in the beginning (though book 2 makes me think that Nerron must also be pretty fluent in French. Gotta love how many of the Goyl speak multiple languages). In the beginning? Yes, because I believe that once Will "reconnected" with the jade, they started using Goyl more and more. And I don't even think Nerron had to "teach" Will that language entirely from scratch rather than helping him get back into it. In book 1, the Fairy makes Will forget he was ever human so that would also have to include Will being able to understand and speak the Goyl language. So I imagine that Will has an instinctual grasp of that language, but needs practice to use it fluently and securely, which is why he and Nerron started speaking it. I liked to think that in turn, Will is starting to teach Nerron English. (Which might come in handy for him in book 5.)
I was thinking about @microwave-radiation ’s post about Sylvain (and the relative reblogs of @the-bastard-and-the-pup) and Nerron swearing.
And, obviously (becasue I’m a simp) I thought of Jacob and the various “Jacob cursed…” (they make me laugh every time, idk). But then I asked myself: in which language does he swear? English? German (Austria)? And in which language do he and Fox talk? Again German? French (Lorraine)? English?
And Will? Is Nerron, like, teaching him the goyl language?
What do you think?

No. 3 A HAIR’S BREADTH FROM DEATH
Gun to Temple | “Say goodbye.”
(Tw: murder threats against child, suicide)
Kami'en had to admit that Hentzau had advised him against publicly casting the Jadegoyl in amber.
"We see Will Reckless for the traitor he is, but some don't."
"But nobody close enough for us to worry about, Hentzau. We will make them forget the Jadegoyl ever existed." They should have known there were some who would never forget or forgive.
All the times the Bastard had appeared from the shadows like a phantom that could go anywhere and couldn't be seen unless it wished to be. Hentzau had been aggravated every time while Kami'en had felt safe in the knowledge that what he stood for was something Nerron wouldn't want to jeopardise. He hadn't thought there was anything that would make the Bastard hate him more than the Onyx.
The eyes from the darkness of his son's room told Kami'en how wrong he had been.
"Whatever you are planning; It won't bring Will Reckless back from the dead, Nerron." Kami'en tried to put as much regal calmness into his voice as he was able to.
"You mean just like having him killed didn't bring back the Fairy?" It was worrying that Kochany hadn't awoken yet. Nerron appeared to have followed Kami'en's gaze.
"A harmless sleeping potion, just enough he wouldn't wake for a few hours. Not enough to die. At least, not from the potion." The barrel of the revolver Nerron pulled was a glint in the darkness and the distance separating him from his son's bed suddenly became endless to Kami'en.
"He wouldn't have wanted you to do this."
"No, he wouldn't. But you know what he wanted? He wanted to come here and fight by your side. He would have fought for our people and he would have died for you and the only thing you wanted to do was murder him. And I lead him right to you because I was a fool who believed in you."
"I loved her!", Kami'en couldn't help but snarl.
"And I loved him. You should be sympathetic for what I am about to do, then."
"He has nothing to do with Will Reckless' death."
"But he has everything to do with you. I don't care if you live or die, so long as you lose what is most precious to you. Have me killed after this, conquer the world, but always remember what you payed with for your pride. Nothing you will built will ever justify this pain." And Kami'en knew there was nothing he could say. Nothing he could promise. He could have the Bastard tortured to death in the most unspeakable ways after this, but nothing would erase the helpless pain of this moment and the loss of his son. He very nearly contemplated averting his gaze so he wouldn't have to see this. But his eyes were almost glued to the Onyx who had pointed the gun at Kochany's sleeping head. Every second that went by was agony, but Nerron did not pull the trigger.
"There will be others", Nerron said quietly. "Who will not care if their last act would be using an innocent child as a tool for their revenge. They will come for you. But still, I have gone too far, haven't I? Almost seems a shame I am going to rob Hentzau of this satisfaction." Hentzau would indeed have jumped at the opportunity to end Nerron for this attempt on their prince.
A shot went off.
Kami'en made sure the blood would be cleaned and the body dragged away by the time Kochany would wake up. Guards were doubled, windows boarded, locks reinforced and every meal checked for poisons.
But no precautions would ever be enough. The fear the Bastard had instilled in him that night never left the king.

On Goyl and intimacy
Something I noticed while (once again) reading Reckless 1 to my mum: A very interesting parallel between the constellations Kami'en-Dark Fairy-Hentzau and Will-Sixteen-Nerron. A man, his lover and his closest friend.
We know that the Goyl are a polygamous culture. A man can have multiple wives and lovers and while we don't know if one woman can have multiple husbands, the Dark Fairy is apparently free to seek out additional lovers of her own while being with Kami'en (though she has no desire to do so). (Briefly mentioning my headcanon that same-sex relationships/marriages are, while rare, accepted.) Marriage is about status and securing one's progeny and bloodline. (We learn that it is not unusual for a Goyl to kill their siblings, the survivors have established themselves as the "fittest" of their generation in their family.) Taking lovers is about passion, pleasure and desire. The pair acts on those things, but makes no binding vows to each other. Once the feelings are satisfied enough or other distractions occur, they split up. (Kami'en casting the Fairy aside for his human wife, Nerron as the result of an Onyx noble having an affair with a beautiful Malachite woman, Will not wanting to be with Clara since basically book 1.)
Marriage: duty and responsibility
Lovers: living out passions and desires, not necessarily with a promise of loyalty or staying together forever
Family: first experiences with establishing dominance and fighting for an own place in a hierarchy
Friendship?
Now this is what's so intriguing. The Dark Fairy says that Hentzau and Kami'en are closer than brothers, and perhaps even closer than Kami'en and herself. And (slight spoiler for Reckless 4) while Will is enamoured with 16, on an emotionally intimate and vulnerable level he appears to be much closer to Nerron. The way these constellations parallel so much seems to speak of a special status that these kinds of friendships have.
While one may be higher up in a hierarchy, they still remain loyal to the other who in turn does not blindly follow their lead. (Kami'en respecting Hentzau's loyalty and skills despite his worsening disabilities, Hentzau being honest and open with his king. Nerron compromising with Will's plans, but still looking out for him because Will does not know as much about this world.) Both Kami'en and Will are extraordinary warriors with a man by their side who is always willing to kill and die to save his friend. This kind of devotion was not just given to them, they earned it. Kami'en earned it by leading their people to triumph after triumph to the vision of a better future, Will earned it by showing love and appreciation to someone who has only known mistrust and abuse for years while also letting him see Will's journey to fully accepting himself and his destiny.
The lovers despise the best friends for knowing the men they love in such an intimate way.

@soft-tiny-fox 's fictober day 3 makes me want Hentzau and Nerron getting together in a bar and complain about their best friends' women.
Hentzau: She doesn't even look squishy like the rest of them! It's like... as if bumping her with my claw would make a "ting" noise, you know?
Nerron: Sixteen is literally made out of glass. She probably would make a "ting" noise, but I won't try it. And the other thing is, she is... her only personality traits are loving him and hating me-
Hentzau: The Fairy is just like that!
Nerron: What is even up with women?
Hentzau: Don't ask me. I recently spoke to one of Kami'en's Goyl wives-
Nerron: How many are there again? Two? Three?
Hentzau: ...
Hentzau: ... Why don't you know that? Shouldn't a spy know that?
Nerron: Only if it's actually important to the king. Which it isn't. He never mentions them. So, how many are there, do you know?
Hentzau: Honestly, not really. There may be one Kami'en forgot to tell me about. He can be very preoccupied with other things.
