Today we remember the passing of D. Boon(27 Club) who Died: December 22, 1985 in Tucson, Arizona
Dennes Dale "D." Boon was an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist. Boon was best known as the guitarist and vocalist of the American punk rock trio Minutemen. In 1985 he was killed in a van crash at the age of 27.
Dennes Boon was born in San Pedro, California, on April 1, 1958. His father, a navy veteran, worked installing radios in Buick cars, and the Boons lived in former World War II barracks that had been converted into public housing.
According to childhood friend and future bandmate Mike Watt, Boon was unfamiliar with popular music and had grown up listening to Buck Owens and Creedence Clearwater Revival. Watt introduced Boon to Blue Öyster Cult and The Who. Urged by Boon's mother, Boon and Watt began to learn to play instruments. They learned to play by copying songs from their favorite bands' records. Boon took a few lessons from local teacher Roy Mendez Lopez who taught him rock as well as flamenco and classical.
As a teenager, Boon began painting and signed his works "D. Boon", partly because "D" was his slang for cannabis, partly after Daniel Boone, but mostly because it was similar to E. Bloom, Blue Öyster Cult's vocalist and guitarist.
Boon formed his first band with Watt in 1978, The Reactionaries. The band's members were lead vocalist Martin Tamburovich, Boon on guitar, bassist Watt, and drummer George Hurley. The Reactionaries existed for most of 1978 and 1979, practicing regularly but rarely if ever performing live.
After only seven months, Boon and Watt broke the band up feeling that the traditional frontman-style band was "bourgeois".
Boon formed Minutemen in January 1980 with Mike Watt on bass and Frank Tonche on drums. Tonche was soon replaced by former Reactionaries drummer George Hurley. Their best-known album is Double Nickels on the Dime.
The Minutemen continued until December 22, 1985, when Boon was killed in a van accident in the Arizona desert on Interstate 10. Because he had been sick with fever, Boon was lying down in the rear of the van without a seatbelt when the rear axle broke and the van ran off the road. Boon was thrown out the back door of the van and died instantly from a broken neck. He was 27 years old. Boon’s death caused the band to immediately dissolve, though Watt and Hurley would form the band Firehose soon after. The live album Ballot Result was released in 1987, two years after Boon's death.
Since the first Firehose album, Mike Watt has dedicated every record he has worked on – be it Firehose, solo, or otherwise – to D. Boon's memory. A song on Watt's semi-autobiographical 1997 album Contemplating the Engine Room, "The Boilerman," is about D. Boon; on the recording itself, guitarist Nels Cline plays one of Boon's last Telecaster guitars, which Watt is in possession of. Watt also mentions his fallen friend in Firehose's "Disciples of the 3-Way" (Mr. Machinery Operator) and his own "Burstedman" (The Secondman's Middle Stand).
Boon has been paid tribute by American alternative band Stigmata-A-Go-Go with the song "D. Boon," from its 1994 album It's All True, Uncle Tupelo with a different song "D. Boon" from its 1991 album Still Feel Gone, and Centro-matic's song "D.Boon-Free (A Ninth Grade Crime)" off The Static vs. The Strings Vol. 1. His story is also told in the documentary We Jam Econo.
In 2003, former D. Boon roommate Richard Derrick released the CD D. Boon and Friends, a collection of jam session tapes he recorded with D. Boon, and rare Boon solo performances, as the first release on his Box-O-Plenty Records label. Mike Watt authorized the release and provided technical assistance and liner notes.
He is #89 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time: David Fricke's Picks.
In his review of the band's last album, music critic Robert Christgau described the death of Boon as "a rock death that has for wasted potential Lennon and Hendrix for company," adding that "after seven fairly amazing years he was just getting started. Shit, shit, shit."

Sandy Denny: Who Knows Where the Time Goes? BBC John Peel Sessions
Alexandra Elene MacLean Denny "Sandy Denny" (6 January 1947 – 21 April 1978) was an English singer-songwriter who was lead singer of the British folk rock band Fairport Convention. She has been described as "the pre-eminent British folk rock singer". Recording "This solo live studio recording of 11 September 1973 for the BBC Radio 1 show “Sounds of the Seventies”, hosted by John Peel, was first broadcast in the UK on FM Stereo on 25 September 1973. It was first published in 1997 on The BBC Sessions 1971-73 and later in 2007 on the 3 CD+DVD set Live at the BBC". (Courtesy: mainlynorfolk.info). Lyrics (as sung here)
Across the evening sky, all the birds are leaving But how can they know it's time for them to go? Before the winter fire, I shall still be dreaming I do not count the time For who knows where the time goes? Who knows where the time goes? Sad, deserted shore, your fickle friends are leaving Ah, but then you know it's time for them to go But I shall still be here, I have no thoughts of leaving I have no thoughts of time For who knows where the time goes? Who knows where the time goes? And I am not alone while my love is near me And I know it shall be so 'til it's time to go So come the storms of winter there And then the birds in spring again I do not fear the time For who knows how my love grows? And who knows where the time goes?

'Kids are an unfinished gift and whatever can pinball them in the right direction, I'm in,' Josh Homme said of the museum's new music exhibit. Vickie Connor, The Desert Sun
Josh Homme loves to play, and he finds it's best to give the gift of play as well.
The Queens of the Stone Age frontman was on hand Wednesday evening to dedicate a "musical pathway" at the Children's Discovery Museum in Rancho Mirage. Leading from a picnic area to the traveling exhibit gallery, the outdoor space features three oversized instruments that kids of all ages can play on – a set of tuned drums, chimes and a metallophone, which looks and sounds much like a xylophone.
The exhibit was built thanks to a grant from Homme and his Sweet Stuff Foundation, created to provide support for children’s music programs as well as those within the music community who struggle with health issues and disabilities.
Homme said the decision to help build the pathway was inspired by having children of his own and visiting the museum together.
"I realized mentally that I've been a child the whole time," Homme said. "It's so wonderful to play. That's what I do, I play with my friends. It all donned on me that I'm giving the gift of play, and never letting it go."
The museum unveiled the pathway last year but this week's dedication ceremony featured a plaque to be installed in the future with the inscription, "Make Some Music."
Growing up in the Coachella Valley, Homme said there weren't places like the Children's Discovery Museum or opportunities for young people to play music like there are now.
"Even though there's a lot more to do now than when I was a kid, (the Coachella Valley) is a wonderful place that a lot of people worked their whole lives to come to," he said. "There's some difficult things here, too, and music can keep you from getting caught up in the rough things here," he said.
He also explained the benefits he's received from playing music throughout his life.
"Music is the only thing I understand that is never wrong. You may not like something, but it's not wrong," he said. "It's a safe space to be yourself. You gain confidence because of the expression of being yourself. I also think in this modern world of anxiety and stress of things going on, it's the most positive thing you can do that says, 'Everything is ok, just slow down.' That's a gift I was thankful to get and to give, too."
Off and on since 1997, Homme has led the Desert Sessions, a musical collective series that has included a large cast of musicians like PJ Harvey, Les Claypool of Primus, Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, and Christian Grahn of The Hives. In October, he released the first new material since 2003, "Volumes 11 & 12."
During the recording sessions, Homme said he left early one night and was surprised when he heard a track the following day, recorded in his absence.
"That's a gift too, because I love to reserve the right to be surprised by things," Homme said. "The one thing I know is: I know nothing. It's just as inspiring to go to bed at 10:30 p.m. and wake up in the morning with this unfinished gift to make your mark on, too. There's a parallel there. Kids are an unfinished gift and whatever can pinball them in the right direction, I'm in."

If You Run - The Desert Sessions Vol. 11
The Desert Sessions are a musical collective series, founded by Josh Homme (Queens Of The Stone Age, Kyuss, Them Crooked Vultures, Eagles Of Death Metal).
It began in Rancho de la Luna in Joshua Tree, in August of 1997, and has included the collaboration of various artists and musicians (the list is way too big, so I'll just tag a few of them).
"At Desert Sessions, you play for the sake of music. That's why it's good for musicians. If someday that's not enough anymore, or that's not the reason behind you doing it—that's not your raison d'être—then a quick reminder like Desert Sessions can do so much for you, it's amazing. It's easy to forget that this all starts from playing in your garage and loving it."
-Josh Homme

Oasis Biografi
Tumblr media
Saat "Supersonic" mulai memanjat collection rock AS serta tangga lagu rock present day, lagu "Apa saja" (single non-collection) jadi nomor dua semasa musim Natal Inggris.
Desert garden habiskan tersisa musim panas mengakhiri collection ke-2 mereka, (What the Story) Morning Glory ?, yang dikeluarkan pada Oktober 1995. Inggris semenjak Michael Jackson's Bad.
Band ini terus cetak rekor semasa beberapa tahun selanjutnya. Semasa tahun 1996, (What the Story) Morning Glory? jadi collection Inggris paling besar ke-2 dalam riwayat.
Collection yang dibuat, Be Here Now, dikeluarkan di akhir Agustus, sebulan sesudah kehadiran single "D'You Know What I Mean."
Bekas gitaris Andy Bell, Andy Bell serta gitaris berat Stereo Gem Archer tanda-tangani sesudah rekaman Standing on the Shoulder of Giants tahun 2000 usai.
Try not to Believe the Truth pada akhirnya lihat launching di penjuru dunia pada Mei 2005. "Lyla," "The Importance of Being Idle," serta "Let There Be Love" semua berperan pada keberhasilan collection, serta Don't Believe the Truth selekasnya jadi usaha pemasaran band withering tinggi semenjak Be Here Now.

Le trio d’entrée, « Move Together », « Noses in Roses, Forever » et « Far East for the Trees », tient une cadence électrisante franchement irrésistible, les ballades « If You Run » ou « Easier Said Than Done » tiennent aussi la route. Toujours bien entouré, Homme sait toujours bousculer rythmiques et guitares.

star-crossed by realfakedoors (or anything they write, you’ll be seeing a lot of that here)
They said, once upon a time, in a faraway land, there was a peaceful and prosperous kingdom, rich in romance and tradition. They said the Prince would host a ball, and choose his spouse, and they would live happily ever after.Well, they lied.
Keith is a Prince, and Lance lives with his shitty extended family. Neither of them are very happy, and when they meet, they’re surprised to have so much in common. Strangers, to friends, and then, well…
Meanwhile, Hunk is a sweetheart, Pidge is an iconic asexual, Shiro is a supportive Knight Dad™, Allura isn’t here for anyone’s crap, and there’s some political shit going on that forces them all together.
okay so how do i say it? it might be fave kl fic atm. this is my dirty laundry, my on thin ice. i love eveeery thing about it. i literally drop anything im doing if i see it updated. Also the last chapter? got me Shook.
also i KNOW about that big E rating there but the smut is in only one chap and i think the author marked it so it’s totally complementary and doesn’t add anything to the story so don’t worry.
breakfast on the moon by DairyFarmer (also very very recommended author!!)
Future Prom King, student body president, and all around hottie Lance McClain is abducted from his home in Arizona in 1997.
He is found decades later in the clearance section of an Earth paraphernalia store by the Paladins of Voltron.
another one of my big faves atm. everyone is very attentive of lance which is *clenches fist and wipes tear* very good. also it screams future langst and i cant wait :) (im kind of a langst hoe sorry not sorry)
let’s play pretend and hope it comes true by fevered_dreams
The Kingdom of Altea was quickly heading towards ruin. At least, it had been until the Royal Family’s eldest daughter had been born as an alpha. The people had rejoiced at her birth, and there was hope yet for a new ruler and a future secured. Even the fact that the second Royal Child had been born a beta couldn’t dampen their spirits.
Except Lance was not an beta. He was just an omega, trying his best to keep the charade going with a set of spells, pills, and all the tinctures he could brew because being an omega was dangerous. Being an omega made him something to be had, a rusted tool of barter worth less than scraps in return, and Altea couldn’t afford to let him go.
But, if Lance’s luck would have it, Prince Keith of the Blade wouldn’t mind being lied to too much.
okay okay in my defence, this one STILL doesn’t have smut. only kinda steamy make-out sessions. also don’t let the a/b/o scare you, there is talk about the dynamics but not so much in the sexual way, u’kno?
anything by BleuSarcelle, but if i have to chose one, let’s go with Of Pink Freckles and Green Moles
Lance now can see the boy’s face and he can only stare at the pretty color in the boy’s eyes before he’s suddenly being squished by two hands.
“Papa!” the boy shouts happily back at the adult that makes his way other them hurriedly. The boy hardly notices, still too fixed on squeezing Lance’s cheeks for a second longer before he giggles. “Papa, ugly!”
“Keith, no! Oh my god -”
“Ugly,” the boy repeats obliviously, patting Lance’s cheeks with a proud gleam in his eyes. “Ooh-gly!”
Lance doesn’t know what that word means but for some reason, it makes him cry harder.
[Or the one where Keith and Lance meet when they are two and three years old respectively and spend their entire childhood going through charity contests. Lance says they are rivals, Keith only hears ‘best friends’.]
super cute G kidfic.
Ground Control to Major Tom by yourfavoritetsundre
A year after Keith and Lance have a big falling out, Lance is…well, he’s not missing. He’s fine. He’s just not telling anyone where he is. Keith decides maybe the best way to apologize for being an absolute monster is to track him down.
Following Lance’s path of self-discovery, Keith starts to remember all the things about Lance he had buried years before. Because of the war, because of the Blade, because of Allura. And he starts to realize that maybe he’s to blame for more than he thought.
Meanwhile, Curtis just wants to plan his quiznacking wedding.
post-s8 fic
Written in Sand by MuseofWriting
Lance wakes up in a hospital on Earth to discover he has been missing for four months, with no memory of Voltron or the Galra. Drawn inexplicably to the desert where they found him, he discovers a hut full of research and notes that may provide the key to his missing memories. With secrets and conspiracies surrounding him, and the Garrison potentially hiding far more than he could ever have imagined, Lance grows to trust the notes in the desert - but he may not believe the person who claims he wrote them.
this one has been around for a while (a year to be precise) and i thinks its pretty aknowledged in the fandom but *shrugs*
until we get there by starlightment
Sometimes his mind is cruel. He’ll wake in the dead of night, drowning in his sweat, choking on his tears. He’ll clutch at old bedsheets until his knuckles fade to white. He’ll shiver in the darkness, and the light blue marks beneath his eyes will start to burn, and his lungs will heave, aching for a breath that just isn’t there.
And sometimes Keith comes to visit.
Those are the best days, Lance thinks.
Those are the days when it’s easiest to breathe.
Or: Lance loses himself a little bit, but Keith is there to help him find it again.
post-s8 fic. i think i dont even need to present they author since they’re better know for writing something blue (i heard wonders abt it but havent found the chance to read it yet). also i cant fucking wait for their new fic like im vibrating here on my seat bc i LOVEEEE the trope of jock keith / nerd/prep lance dont judge me
sunflower by xintong (uuh i think i dont have to introduce this author either lmao)
On the morning of their first summer back on Earth, Lance receives a gift of sunflowers. A confession, a rejection, and the passage of time, all leading to the one person who’s always been there for him.
another post-s8 fic because honestly i needed healing at that time okay. super soft and cute and uuughhhh i cant deal
Pretty Ob(li)vious by msmooseberry
Lance loves make-up and being pretty while wearing it. Unfortunately, even in the world where Earth becomes one of the main centres of intergalactic communication and home to many races, his hobbies are still largely frowned upon. He never wanted other cadets at the Galaxy Garrison to find out, especially not his half-Galra crush, but that is exactly what happens. Lance prepares for the hate or ridicule at best, but the reaction he gets is something else entirely. Who knew Galra viewed lilac sparkly lips as a betrothal symbol?
keith finding lance the most beautiful being ever? uuh yeah? gimme that shit
Chestnut And Onyx by MilkTeaMiku (great author too!)
If his eyes weren’t deceiving him, Keith looked a little flushed. He crossed his arms over his chest, wings all puffed up and ruffled like he was preening. “I didn’t know you were that flexible,” he said. And then he looked angry, and his wings puffed up even more, and he stormed away. -Lance thinks his wings aren’t all that pretty, but Keith has other ideas. If only Lance knew.
langst wing-fic. what could i ask more for?
you’re lucky that’s what i like by zenstrike
Lance rescues a hamster from certain doom.
or, Lance has Keith wrapped around his little finger and doesn’t even realize it.
just. take the whole fucking thing. just take it
aaand these are the ones that appear on my feed that have been updated recently since most of them aren’t finished (sowwy). the bad thing about reading a lot of fics and having bad memory is that i already forgot half of my fave fics, probably, lmao.

Suede: The Insatiable Ones – the ugly beautiful truth is a must watch

By George Chesterton
A new Sky Arts documentary about Suede uncovers the tangled tale of a band who mixed glamour and excess with the dark poetry of suburbia

By the time of Suede’s fourth album, 1999’s Head Music, it was easy to imagine that Brett Anderson had been replaced by a Brett Anderson Random Lyric Generator. But by 1999 Suede were out of step, just as they had been when they released their first single in 1992. They are a band who admit to never fitting in and even at their commercial peak they were trapped between what they had been rejecting, American grunge and indie dance, and what they inadvertently gave birth to, Britpop. They remained outside whatever cultural moment they happened to be sashaying past in slightly flared trousers. Suede always had delusions of grandeur. But what beautiful delusions they were.
The Sky Arts documentary Suede: The Insatiable Ones, follows the band’s successes and troubles through interviews, archives and a mass of video shot by the drummer Simon Gilbert in the studio and on the road. The film, by Mike Christie, begins with Anderson nodding sagely in a studio listening to some orchestration in Prague. It’s indicative of what Suede always wanted to be: a band not necessarily driven by an ambition to be huge, but rather a band with huge ambitions.
Suede: The Insatiable Ones begins with the journey of Anderson from school in Haywards Heath to University College London, where the singer met Justine Frischmann in 1989 and formed the core of the group with his childhood friend, bassist Mat Osman (brother of Richard Osman, who appears throughout). The generosity of Frischmann’s testimonials provide some of the warmest moments of the film, adding welcome perspective to a band whose entire existence was so cultivated or, to their detractors, contrived.
Suede admit to never fitting in. They always had delusions of grandeur. But what beautiful delusions they were
Recounting the cash-strapped early years, we discover the shock when The Smith’s drummer Mike Joyce auditioned – “It was one of the strangest things that ever happened to us” says Osman – and that Gilbert’s arrival was down in part to his friend Ricky Gervais, who, for a short time, was their ineffectual co-manager. “I remember saying, ‘oh I’m rubbish at this,’” says Gervais. “And the band agreed.” Then Bernard Butler answered an ad for a guitarist in the NME. His arrival and Frischmann’s departure – she left Anderson with a broken heart but a stack of his best lyrics to write – hastened the great leap they were looking for. “It enabled me to tap into something primal – loss, frustration, jealousy,” says Anderson. “I was trying to reflect the world around me – squats, roundabouts – but it was also an escape.”
The film captures the sudden emergence of Suede’s particularity, as they signed to Nude Records and played to increasingly hysterical audiences. As Stuart Maconie, the man who put Anderson on the cover of Select magazine in April 1993 with headline “Yanks Go Home” explains. Suede have a very definite constituency. It emerged from and reflected the emotional frigidity and patio-grey deserts of suburbia. And just like any artists looking beyond the horizons of their claustrophobic home, Suede were at once explorers and prisoners. The music, the image, the lyrics were a reaction against their environment that could never escape its own frames of reference.

From the first time I heard The Drowners – especially the B-Side To The Birds – it was obvious to me why I liked them so much. The early part of the documentary explores Anderson and Osman’s emergence from Haywards Heath – something Anderson himself eloquently recounts in his autobiography Coal Black Mornings. This was a world I knew rather too well for comfort and he articulated it with unnerving accuracy. He became the poet laureate of pylons, municipal parks and cheap housing stock. If anything, the film does not state the impact of the first singles and their debut album, Suede, enough. It was a moment of exuberance and drama just as British pop seemed to have run out of steam (again). “The sexuality in the lyrics was a really important thing,” says Anderson. “I wanted to talk about sexuality in the same way Lucian Freud paints the human body.”
Butler, a lithe, beautiful figure with a guitar in his hands, is shown only in old clips and his contributions do not go beyond an interview he shared with Anderson after their acrimony had been resolved in 2004. It’s telling that when Osman talks of Butler’s slide into the musical monomania that saw him leave during their second album, Dog Man Star, he admits he wishes they had shown more empathy for this fragility. Butler was still grieving for his father in 1994, and this compounded the collapse of his relationship with Anderson and their producer Ed Buller.
Dog Man Star was recorded in shifts so Butler could work alone and he and Anderson effectively wrote their songs “by post”. Butler’s dark Brian Wilson routine did help create the massive sound and scope of Dog Man Star, which appeared just as the meat and potatoes of Britpop was emerging into the mainstream. “I felt partly responsible for it,” says Anderson of Britpop. “Like giving birth to some awful child.” It’s an album that should be treasured – grandiloquent and brooding but also deeply humane and smart. Butler’s exit fulfils that great trope of pop and rock history: the “what if” question. But this is misleading, as Anderson explains. He knew from the beginning that Butler would leave. It was simply a question of when.
Suede's first album was a moment of exuberance and drama just as British pop seemed to have run out of steam
This sorry episode is lifted by the bathos of film’s funniest moment: the footage of a dewy-eyed Anderson in his dark glasses at a press conference following Butler’s departure, looking like David St Hubbins after Nigel Tufnell quits Spinal Tap. He admits, “Ninety-nine per cent of the world thought we were over, including part of me.”
Frischmann explains that Suede survived because it was always Anderson and Osman’s band. With bloody mindedness and the 17-year-old guitarist Richard Oakes (the first gig he had ever been to was Suede, who he watched with eyes on stalks at Poole Arts Centre in 1993) they returned with new songs and the wise decision to change the mood. That led to their most commercially successful album, bursting with big hits, Coming Up, helped by keyboard player Neil Codling. “It was such an optimistic record and that was a side of Suede nobody had seen before,” said Buller. The film reunites Anderson with the legendary Factory designer Peter Saville, who seemed to have created the band’s artwork of this period entirely in his dressing gown.

By the late Nineties the momentum was unsustainable, especially as Anderson, who admits his penchant at the hard stuff, became an free-basing self-parody. “I justified my addiction by seeing it as part of a rock’n’roll mythology.” Needless to say, wanting to make a Prince album hit a few snags. Firstly, he was high on crack and heroin. Secondly, he wasn’t Prince. Osman remembers how the band could tell if Anderson had been smoking crack because he would arrive at the studio with his hair pushed back to avoid setting it alight. Even when the singer got clean, the music had run dry. “We were done – we’d run out of inspiration,” says Osman. The fifth album has been officially disowned. In a group therapy session arranged for the film, Anderson apologises to the rest of the members for his behaviour and for announcing the split on Graham Norton. After a few awkward confessions, the footage cuts to them reforming at the Royal Albert Hall in 2010 and loving every minute of it.
Osman said he could tell if Anderson had been smoking crack because he would arrive at the studio with his hair pushed back to avoid setting it alight
After side and solo projects, Suede returned and are slotting comfortably into national treasure status with three albums since, including this year’s The Blue Hour. Suede care. They do their homework. They make the effort. Nothing demonstrates this better than their love of the now archaic-sounding B-side, which they produced by the bucketload (collected on the fine Sci-Fi Lullabies in 1997), when other bands couldn’t be bothered.
Accusations of pretentiousness are pointless. If pop can’t be pretentious then there is no hope for humanity. Anyway, such barbs are often made by those for whom imagination itself is an act of class war. Like their contemporaries Pulp, Suede are canonical English pop, mixing the wry fantasies of art school (Bowie, Roxy Music, even Kate Bush), the working-class smarts of The Kinks and the sleaze of new wave. If you don’t understand Suede, you don’t understand English music. This is an understated documentary for a band who tried to be anything but understated. Then again, under the filthy glamour of Suede there has always been something dark and grey. To take a few examples at random: concrete, flyovers, motorways, council houses, skyscrapers, telephone wires, electric lights…
Suede: The Insatiable Ones is on Sky Arts on 24 November at 8pm, followed by Suede: Live At The Royal Albert Hall at 11.15pm
