sam is friends with the investigator (who i named orochi a long time ago (a bit cringe but im too attached to change it)) I think they generally dont want. Orochi to be snooping thru taro’s stuff (they are under the impression taro *is* a human and not an alien <= its obvious they are but i think it’d be funny if nobody believed orochi LOL)

i think… in this hypothetical scenario. Taro would try to become friends with Orochi and Sam.. I think they would have success with Sam (YAYYY!) but Orochi is way too wary of them. There would probably be awkward silence ‘til sam is like “look dude. Look at how Human they are its literally fine there’s nothing to be suspicious of” “..mmm. Tch. Fine. hey there! I got here via your dream post and stuck around to read your writing. The “realistic” sci fi worldbuilding is very cool - especially detailed explanations of how tech like FTL travel works! Have you considered running a homebrew campaign, or partnering with someone who writes character/plot driven fiction? I find that tends to generate a larger audience. Your character first-person writing has some interesting ideas! Quick tip - the overuse of commas chops up sentence flow and makes prose more difficult to read. Try editing to remove some!

...Buuut you've sort of hit a nerve here so I hope you're prepared for an essay response! I'm sorry in advance for how long this turned out to be and I hope this doesn't drive you off, eheh. Again, I do genuinely appreciate the feedback.

See, my default method of storytelling is speculative fiction: a concept or set of concepts is the center of the work, and almost all my characters are just cogs in the story machine. Sure, I have some characters I’m attached to, but the vast majority are just there because they have to be. They’re not the point of the story. Characters ARE important, but they rank lower to me than worldbuilding. When I generate story ideas, the characters are just temporary vehicles for the audience to connect with a concept I’m presenting.

And with that, we come to the problem that you've brought up which kicks me right in the ass every time: people always latch onto the characters, and don't give half as much of a damn about the setting. Yeah, I'm sensitive about that! Because I fall in love with technical details like planetary system structure and the mechanics of warp drives in much the same way as everyone else fixates on their "blorbos." That's why, when it comes to original work, you'll pretty much only find worldbuilding and writing posts on the blog –not to say I don't ever post anything about my OCs, but I can write whole essays about setting details and none of my OCs have that same depth.

And, anon? I'd like you to imagine how alienating that feels. I can't help but be upset when all of my friends are having fun making character playlists and talking about shipping while I'm sitting over in my corner with a twenty-page spreadsheet detailing the statistics of hundreds of stars and planets that nobody wants to read, because it's boring to everyone but me! I have tried to get involved, making characters for the hell of it to play in the same space as my friends. I wanna be excited about them, but they just don't hold my interest nearly as much. I can't change this, and it kinda fucking sucks sometimes!!!

Yes, sure, I could absolutely partner with someone who's better at characters and character-centric plot than I am! That's a good and practical suggestion! But you know what would happen? People would latch onto those characters and pay them much more attention than the setting they stem from, and I honestly don't think I could cope with that. I've tried this too, actually; I'm the one doing most of the heavy lifting when it comes to the Midnight Sea lore. I love getting into the gullyworks, tinkering around and fitting all the pieces together, making the world tick like a well-constructed mechanism. I know my friends like that about me too! That feels good! I just wish I got more credit/attention for that in itself, rather than for what it enables. I'm the minority when it comes to fictional focus, and I just have to live with that.

Also, yes, I'm aware I have a tendency to use lots of commas. I'm very sorry it hinders you, but it actually helps me when I read things back and when I'm organizing my thoughts. I'm sorry but that's a stylistic choice I don't think I can shake, but I'll try to be mindful of my comma usage going forward. ^~^;

Let me reiterate just one more time that I genuinely appreciate your ask, and I hope you stick around! I'm glad you're here! I'm sorry this got a little venty and I hope this doesn't come off as defensive or rude. Favorite OC to Write? I wanted to say it’s been genuinely ages since I’ve written any OCs, but it’s not quite true. Except it’s a sort of borrowed OC. <3 From my own, I definitely enjoy writing Elinor and people surrounding her. A little (lot) broken, a lot of fierce and on top of a mountain of love she is learning to express through more than sass.

Genie, too, though I feel like I’ve not quite found her voice yet.

Dialogue or descriptions? Description, for sure. I cannot say I excel at it, for real, but it is definitely my strongest point in writing and where I feel most at home. I hate how I write dialogues, you can literally sense that I don’t talk with people enough. (Or at least how glaringly awkward I am.)

Favorite plot twist? Hmm. I am unfortunately the person that either doesn’t do many plot twists or the small audience is already spoiled on them before they read them. I think I will always enjoy recalling the reaction to heartbreaking twists of two OG story AUs I wrote for a friend and put her through anguish. (She loved it.)

Favorite cliche? Enemies to friends to lovers and whole lotta pining.

Favorite season? As with many things, I’m bad with choosing and it’s a split between spring and fall. One year, depending on weather, one wins over the other and so on. But I love those days when sun has just warmed world up enough or doesn’t scorch anymore, gilding the world and the last leaves or the overwhelmingly blooming world. 

Writing by hand or on computer/phone? Computer, though I think I should return more to handwriting, just to push myself some more. If only I could read what I wrote myself after....

Music while writing? Almost always yes. My brain doesn’t do well with silence typically, I just feel overwhelmed and almost nauseous (same as with too much noise). Typically things with lyrics, doesn’t have to pertain to the story, though that helps. Caught myself writing/generally existing in silence few times over this last year, much to my surprise, but typically, there’s rarely a time when there’s no music on in this apartment.

Weirdest thing you’ve ever been inspired by? Hmm, the one time someone misread ‘photography’ as ‘pornography’ in my bio and commended on me being so brave about admitting it, before apologizing profusely in next ask (and explaining what had they meant by first). It sparked a memorable ‘what if’ dialogue inspiration that is never going to get used, but I was entertained for an entire day with the AU. Thank you, sweet anon.

Also a picture of someone smearing ‘blood’ on their lips for aesthetics in MV and I suddenly got overwhelmed by idea how Intimate it’d be to apply it (and detailed makeup in general) if you were hopelessly in love with the person.

Biggest no-no for a book? What will immediately make you put the book down if you see it? I am picky about my reading these days, if it’s not fan fiction, but I can’t remember when I wanted to drop a book in disgust. (Also too used to browsing for mom, who would read basically anything, even if only to constructively rip it to shreds and loathe it.) Hm. Probably something about male fantasy and some assaulter/killer being put on pedestal again.

What titles grab your attention in bookstores? Typically, I just go for the new comer section or fantasy/sci fi part and read summary of all the books, or pick by authors I already know I or mom liked.

Can you describe the color purple in one sentence? Possibly, but it’d have approximately 20 commas and run for half a page. And I have to get up in 6 hours so I will not attempt right now.

My total word count on AO3 is a terrifying 228,131 words. 

How often do you write? 

I sincerely fucking wish it were more - I haven’t written a single sentence of fiction since the start of the year, which feels like emotional constipation and is truly horrific, but as I basically never shut up about my health issues have taken over as top priority for the moment. I am, however, starting to feel more and more like myself again, so that’ll be part of getting back on my grind. 

Do you have a routine for writing? 

I’m so glad this thing exists because I fucking love talking about this shit. 

I do! I have playlists for every project, sometimes down to individual playlists for certain characters, and I put those on most of the time. That having been said, if I’m not in the zone or if I’m having a hard time getting there, I tend to prefer instrumental music; as my PPPD took over my life, I found myself getting way too distracted too easily if I wasn’t using instrumentals. Luckily, most of my mixes tend to have them anyway. My faves for this purpose are Possimiste, Disparition, Rudy Adrian, Nick Cave’s soundtrack work, and Explosions In The Sky. 

My desk fluctuates between a mess, a hot mess and relatively clean, so I usually straighten up a little to minimize distraction and light a candle and/or some incense (I’m a habitual burner of things). 

What are your favorite kinks/tropes/pairings? 

Every single time I get asked this, I go blank. 

Kinks - I love the “we can’t help it” attractions that defy all willpower, which is probably why I enjoy het sibling incest (when done correctly, gotta be consensual and absent of yucky power dynamics or I’m outta there motherfuckers - and don’t let me make you feel judged because god knows I love shitty power dynamics elsewhere) so goddamn much. I’m one of those types who likes dominant men in smut fic but hates most of them in real life. I love a good smut piece that marries exposition with action well. Biting is good. I just really, really like attractions that force inadvisable actions. 

Tropes - Sexually incandescent/morally grey female characters, surprise polyamory, unrequited longing, angsty exposition 

Pairings - Judge me if you gotta but I largely read x Reader fics these days because I have a hard time chewing on OC’s and there are few ships I roll with in general. Fanatical shippers of non-canon pairings are everywhere and while I begrudge no one their thing, it tends to ruin it for me (see: Kastle, which I once enjoyed the subtlety and implications of and now give zero fucks if I ever have to look at again) I do however love Stucky with every beat of my heart. Clintasha. Madwife (though I’ll be cool if this never becomes canon, too). 

Do you have a favorite fic of yours? 

I Don’t Hear The Church Bells Chime Anymore. 

I am prouder of Church Bells than any fanfic that’s come before or after it; I almost wish I had never posted it so I could alter details and try to publish it. I love it that much. 

I do love the Salacious Saga and a ton of my heart and soul has gone into this series - it’s strenuous but I think it’s some of my best work. 

My fic with the most kudos is, predictably, Salacious. 

Things I don’t like about my writing: 

Fucking excessive comma splices, dashes and semicolons. I had a college professor - who loved my writing - call me the Comma Splice Queen. In one paper, she circled a sentence and wrote a note that was something like “while this is technically grammatically correct and I can’t demerit it, please know that I hate it.” 

I once had a friend describe my writing as “cold” and he genuinely meant it as a compliment but it has bothered the fuck out of me ever since he said it like eleven years ago. 

What I do like: 

I’m old enough now that I appreciate my own wit without being precious about it, which is nice. I feel like I give a good balance of exposition vs action but y’all are better judges of that than me.

2. Which of your own fanfics have you reread the most?

I don’t really reread my own fics too often, but one of those that I always enjoy to read again is definitely Cold Heart, because I’m still very happy how it turned out.

3. Describe the differences between your first fanfic and your most recent fanfic.

Wow, my first fanfic… that was quite something. If we are talking about first fanfic ever, it was simply a bored teenager’s self-indulgent Mary Sue-OC insert disaster piece with no actual plot and horrible, horrible writing style. My latest one has way more structure compared to it. I actually knew what I was going to write, wrote characters I know by heart at this point and wrote with a much cleaner style.

I am honestly very glad all those old fics I have written in the past are a) in German and b) unknown to everyone on here, because they are really awful even the ones without OCs that came later, just yikes. The ideas were good, in theory, but I took that theory and butchered it haha. Very embarrassing, I can tell you.

4. Do you think your style has changed over time? How so? 

A lot, yes. I still think I have a rather specific style, one that many people probably don’t like because I don’t really use many fancy words or complicated prose, but I’m more or less alright with that. For a while, I tried to force myself into a more fancy writing style, as I saw it as, but it just doesn’t feel right. I don’t want to sound like someone else when I write, I want to sound like me and just get the words I have out.

In the beginning, things were far more simple than they are now though, so I have improved and changed a lot. There was rarely any emotion in my writing (now there is often too much, I know), I had no feeling for the right tenses or on how to build up tension or atmosphere, but that got better over time. Nowadays I still have things that I am trying to work on, but overall I feel like my writing is far better than I expected it to become in the past.

One thing that never changed though, is my excessive abuse of commas and extremely long sentences. It’s a habit that I can’t really shake off and believe me, I tried so hard to not do it all the time. But I guess that’s both the German in me and King’s fault for making me fall in love with writing in the first place, so if anyone is to blame, it’s definitely him *nods and clutches her commas*
