the cover + description for my second YA novel is finally live! :)
From the author of If I Can Give You That comes an emotional novel that follows a transgender teen who must grapple with a friendship fracturing and a new romance blossoming, all while being haunted by a devastating loss. A must-read for fans of How It Feels to Float and The Ghosts We Keep. Caleb’s world broke the day his brother died of a drug overdose. Now in the throes of grief, Caleb hardly ever sees his friends anymore, and school isn’t much better. He’s on the verge of failing his songwriting class, never mind that music used to be his greatest passion. Even Tanya, his best friend, is growing tired of trying to push him back into his life. But perhaps most concerning of all: A black cat has been following Caleb around…a cat that only he can see. A cat that may just be a ghost. Then Caleb is assigned a songwriting partner in class: Emmett, the nonbinary lead singer of a local punk band. The cat takes a liking to Emmett—and maybe Caleb does, too. As they write together, Caleb begins opening up about his grief, and the two realize they have more in common than expected. Now Caleb will have to decide if he is ready to heal with Emmett’s help—or recede in life and become as invisible as the ghostly cat at his heel.
please pre-order and/or add to goodreads <3

I dont think we praise the ghost of you enough. to me it’s one of those songs that just GET what it’s like - and I can say that on very few songs that aren’t in hebrew. (BIG tw for loss, war, terrorism and just generally sad and unjust shit)
I feel like in tgoy, the gravity of the loss and the things u will never experience with them is so well stressed. when gee sings “and all the things that you never ever told me / and all the smiles that are ever gonna haunt me” it’s almost like they know what it’s like, how u never let go of the feeling that they should be here and experiencing life with u. and this theme is so present in music here, classic or new.
I’ll give for example one of the most well known Remembrance Day songs, so u can see what I mean. it’s called “mi she’halach” (lit. those that went/left), and it talks about how those that have left us will never see the beauty of this world again - “and the mountains will burn again with the fires of sunsets / and in the twilight a wind from the sea will blow / thousands of flowers will spark joy in each heart again with many blooms / those that left will never know it again” (a bit of a wonky translation but bear with me im doing my best). this song is sung pretty much every Remembrance Day here, bc at this day we remember victims of the wars and terror attacks, no matter if civilians or military personnel. the violent loss of life is so familiar.
another song that feels like tgoy to me is “and the wheat grows again”, which is, you guessed it, about how the world moves on even when urs stops. the jarring pauses in the lyrics in tgoy really remind me of this song, how mcr use the continuation of the music in contrast to the abrupt sentence stops in gee’s singing to signal that shit moves on, even when u can’t. “it’s not the same valley, it’s not the same home / you are gone, and you can’t return / the road with the alley, and the hawk in the skies / yet the wheat still grows again” feels to me very close to “and all the wounds that are ever gonna scar me / for all the ghosts that are never gonna-”; in the sense that fuck, the world keeps going but it’s never gonna be the same.
honestly tgoy just gets it imo, I’ve never really related to anti-war songs from outside before it, but this one gets the personal way it gets to u. fuck this song is amazing omfg

Killjoys
maybe the killjoys is something Gerard came up with to comfort himself, the only good outcome of him going to war was them all dying together. peace is dying with Mikey, not living with Mikey now
