I had a really good meeting with a 19 year old client at one of our services to hear about her experiences and we just say in a back room and shot the shit for like an hour while she explained what had been fucked up in her life and how the service was helping. normal stuff I love doing this it's the best part of my job bc you get to fast track with total strangers to the sorts of deep sharing and mutual understanding usually reserved for 3am on a rooftop. she was lovely she was so sweet and it was like looking back a decade into me and my friends as Trauma Youths

however

I swear to goddamn Christ when this child said unironically "I was planning to unalive myself" it knocked me out COLD

I was like fuck damn kid not to sound like an old person but you sure are from the TikTok Generation huh? when I was your age we said 'I was going to top myself' and WE LIKED IT.

#red said #we were having good friendly vibes it was a jokey environment #do not worry i would not have laughed at her turn of phrase if i wasn't 100% sure she understood i wasn't laughing at her #but the thing i have found with these meetings. is you gotta be a wee bit unprofessional to make people comfortable #not like. INAPPROPRIATE. but people feel way safer opening up to you if you're not being Careful with them #if you're comfortable to show vulnerability and share some of yourself and meet them on an equal footing #and like if they're being flippant and throwing friendly insults out it doesn't do any harm to give that energy back #it would be different if i was like a case worker or a therapist #but my job is to make space for them to share stuff they wouldn't necessarily think to share but stuff that they're comfortable being known #so it can't be too professional bc a) they are likely to be awkward and clam up #and also b) they need to know I'm not here to help I'm here to talk to #i an not a support worker I'm an ear #BUT ANYWAY #TEENS OF MY DASH ARE YOU GUYS USING TIKTOK CENSOR WORDS IRL?
