established relationship samaichi, i love clothes sharing smic (obviously lol) but can also see them getting a lot of matching clothes after getting together. shirts and jackets in the same design, just different colors. goofy tees with couply slogans on the front. matching underwear because it's just easier to grab two packs from the same place

like they would still have their own fashion senses and wear a lot of different things, but for sure they would have date days where they go out in matching outfits to maximize their pda

the downside of this is they can wear the same clothes but they are very much not the same size so there are definitely times when samatoki sleepily rolls out of bed and accidentally puts on ichiro's jeans and goes to work with his pants threatening to fall down all day. same with ichiro still half-asleep getting out of bed trying to pull on samatoki's jeans and getting them. like. not even halfway up his thighs lol

do you have a favorite hypstage production? are there portrayals of characters in the stage that you prefer over the manga/drama tracks?

Oh gosh... I unfortunately haven't watched the Hypstage productions in years. I saw 1, 2, part of 3, part of 4, and 5--nothing since.

(Damn, track 5 was three years ago?! I remember it was winter when that show dropped and the place I was living in at the time had no heating and ass insulation. It was usually just above freezing inside. I recorded King of Kings for personal use and replayed it constantly so I'd move around enough to keep warm... LOL) That particular show coincided with a huge number of life changes, and I just never got back into Hypstage afterward.

The thing is, I love stageplays in anything and eat up Hypmic's stageplay songs and choreo. I'm definitely interested in watching the ones I missed, but I never end up being able to justify the expense or find the time to sit down and watch a whole one. Hum... Being an adult is hard.

To address your questions:

Favorite: Track 5! I love all things TDD, and the songs in that show are so choice. The plot is ridiculous beyond belief. The gun is the funniest thing in existence. The screen used to let Sasara harass Samatoki is absolutely choice; I like to imagine Sasara lives in Samatoki's head rent-free and makes bad jokes at him constantly throughout all of canon. With that said, I can't stress enough how much I love some of the songs in Track 4 (Ichirou's "Memories" and Samatoki's "Come Back to Me" in particular), and I also enjoyed Track 2 to death. The Onigawa Bombers' song and its choreo SLAP. That's not to say that Track 1 or Track 3 (I'm OBSESSED with Osaka 24k Magic) are bad either... Man, they're all so good... Ily Hypstage. It's been a loooooong time since I saw any of them, and my Japanese was much worse then, so I can only imagine what it would be like to see them now.

Character portrayals I like over main canon: In terms of characterization, I prefer main canon as a whole. Hypstage is, by necessity, so much simpler than main canon that I don't think it can reach quite the same heights. With that said, I dig Akira Takano (Ichirou) and Taiyo Ayukawa (Jakurai) for the youthfulness they add to the characters. No shade against KimuSuba, but he has this inescapable "Whoa *looks at camera, pearly whites gleam* didn't see you there. I'm KimuSuba, and you're watching the Disney Channel" energy in his voice that Takano utterly lacks. This makes Ichirou feel waaaaaay more like a nineteen-year-old kid and lends his character a much more obvious vulnerability, like we're seeing Ichirou from a non-reverential (so not early series Jirou, Saburou, or societal) perspective. It's really good! Similarly with Ayukawa, being that he's much younger than Haymi Shou--again, no shade--he moves much more fluidly and gracefully. It also feels like he carries himself...perhaps a bit more carefully? Like I get the sense that Hayami Shou's deep voice and deliberate carriage is in some part acting, some part just who he is, whereas Ayukawa seems like he's trying much, much harder to affect the same mannerisms. That gives his portrayal of Jakurai an air of someone striving desperately to constrain themselves and interact with the world with a tissue paper-light touch. I don't think this is the intention--canon makes it clear Jakurai is perceived as being synonymous with effortlessness--but it fits with the emotional core of his character and is wonderfully compelling. TL;DR: Both Ayukawa and Takano (I think inadvertently) play up their characters' self-perceptions vs. other perceptions, which is so, so fun to watch.

Doppo and his buster bro?

Doppo has constant thoughts of not being a good role model for his younger brother. It’s never mentioned how old he is, but especially if he's school aged- I imagine he doesn't visit home often due to the concern of being a "disappointing" older brother.

Despite his concerns though, Doppo's sibling thinks he's the coolest person in the whole world.

Life360 but you're the parent

You’re on the Yamada bro’s family tracker LMAO. Ichiro says you don’t have to turn your location on, but he wanted you to be on it in case anything happened to Saburo or Jiro and he couldn’t be there.

Jiro unfortunately uses it to beg to bring home food whenever he sees that you and Ichi are at a restaurant together.

Grocery shopping with Sasara is a literal process

He keeps wandering off into different isles, always seemingly on the other side of the store. Use that ‘clip a balloon to your partner’ life hack thing cause it’s the only way you’re finding him on your own.

Whenever he does appear though, he’s always sneaking items into the cart, trying not to have you notice. And they’re always EXPENSIVE TOO !! He’s got that famous comedian salary so he excuses it by saying he can afford it- but this man is not cost efficient in the slightest.

Ichi's older brother

Ichiro used to call Samatoki in as a babysitter for Jiro and Saburo back in their TDD days. Whenever he had a client to go to, needed to run errands, or simply just wanted a day to chill- Samatoki was always on speed dial.

Nemu would also come along! The bros thought she was 100% cooler than Toki in every way LMAO

I will live and die with Ramuda basement Dice

Ramuda will never kick Dice out of his basement!! No matter the circumstances, whether you move in, bills start raising, or even if you and Dice don’t get along- he has a home with Ramuda as long as he needs it.

Honestly if you ask him to kick his friend out that might be a deal breaker for your relationship

Jakurai wants a HOMEE

You starting your relationship with Jakurai is what compels him to start looking for a house. He was perfectly fine with a small apartment when it was just him- but with you in the picture he feels it’s time to start planning for a more permanent and stable future.

Doppo needs to stop accidentally sending disses to his boss

Doppo uses your private messages as his personal notes app sometimes. He’ll write down a to do list, ideas for rap verses, or just type keysmash when things get a little too stressful.

He doesn’t expect you to respond to any of his messages but when you do, whether giving him feedback or encouragement, he always gets super flustered.

Jiro's scandal

Jiro thinks that nobody knows about his secret relationship with you- but literally everyone knows HAHAHAHA. Saburo saw him holding hands with you one day and he told Ichiro about it- who then fawned about his lil bro growing up to anyone who asked how they were doing- and well, news certainly spreads quickly when it’s about the golden boys of Ikebukuro.

DAY 4: Favourite Ship

🎤 SAMAICHI

They were my first and they are here to stay. They were the very first characters I was introduced to, and they captured my heart since the start.

I could seriously talk about SamaIchi's dynamic for hours and I have to really try to contain myself!!! Because there are a lot of beautiful and meaningful dynamics in HypMic but they truly do have my heart completely.

The thing about SamaIchi - or, well, how I always interpreted it - is that these two really strong, really tough men that went through so many hardships in life have managed to find the one person that has so much to share and understand with them, because they're so similar to one another, but they also inevitably go head-to-head all the time because of their hardheadedness.

Like, how heartbreaking is it, that in the span of so little time both of them - after already losing their long time best friends - were ripped apart from each other because Chuuoku chose to target the one weakness they both have (their families) that was strong enough to make them doubt each other? How beautiful is it that back at the time of TDD, the only person Samatoki trusted more than Ichiro was Nemu? For both of them, the other was just short of their only family in their list of priorities. And knowing just how much their siblings matter to Samatoki and Ichiro, that just makes my gay little heart weep.

And the thing I ridiculously love about them is the fact that they make each other worse, so much, but they’re also the one person that can make the other better. Because if it gets too much for Ichiro, the only one that can truly relate to him and understand him is Samatoki, and if there is someone that can keep Samatoki’s temper at bay, it’s Ichiro. (and that’s CANON EVERYONE THESE THINGS ARE WHY DOD IS THE BEST MANGA SIDE- gets dragged off stage while clawing at the floor)

And, well, I will have time to rant about this in one of the future days of the challenge, but DO YALL REMEMBER THE DRAMA TRACK "When Six Colours Combine, " " Begins"??? THAT WAS IT FOR ME. THAT DRAMA TRACK BROKE ME. Samaichi in there were just so precious, I literally have that entire 45-minute track memorised. But we'll be talking about it later ;) Just know that I love these silly boys and I could go on for five hundred years but I’m going to spare you lot because unlike me you probably have lives. *chu*

i think i've said somewhere before that i like to imagine ichiro and samatoki both being not that good with spicy foods. that their spice tolerance isn't zero but they aren't spice fiends either. that they would both suffer big time when they get too competitive with each other over some spicy food challenge

but what would also be adorable is if

tdd era samaichi, they go out for ramen and ichiro receives the wrong order. instead of the lovely, mild shoyu ramen he ordered he gets a bowl of something with the word hell in the name. but he's not one to waste food so he's prepared to suffer through it to avoid sending it back

naturally samatoki notices that he's about to cry after just one bite, so he swaps their bowls and claims he fucking loves spicy food. ichiro, crushing hard, Remembers This Forever

years later, cohabitation era, he's having lunch with nemu and saying something about researching new spicy recipes for samatoki since samatoki loves spicy food so much. only for nemu to go "......wtf are you talking about that man is a gigantic spice baby" and that's how ichiro finally finds out he has been torturing his husband's taste buds. for years
