I figured why 90's game ads were so weird
Screen resolution, it's because of screen resolution.
So I put attention to the little captures of the game screen and wonder "why are they so small?" and then it hit me. So back at the 90's computers were still in thier infancy, right?
One of the things they couldn't do was enlarge images the way we can now. software like Adobe Id has special setting for that, enlarging with photoshop was a difficult task for most of the time the software existed.
Screen resolution is 72 dpi, print resolution starts at 150 dpi but for best results anything over 300 dpi is recommended.
The screenshots you could get from game companies were probaly super small and enlarging them was going to pixel them, so making a full-page game ad featuring game screenshots was very impossible.
Though not completely impossible, you could always use 3D software to render game assets in a higher size to match the 300 dpi resolution. But this is the 90's, and rendering that would take hours.
And even then you had the problem of how to output the images of the game since I doubut this was before the screenshot tool of microsoft existed. Outputting images from a game probably involved a special setting of the game engine or other fuckery tat was not just taking a screenshot when playing the game.
So, whatever images the marketing dept. could get were not enough to cover a full page, so they had to get creative. Buy why the weird flashy style of ads? probably because it was the easiest way to get a reader's attention. The esthetics and theme of the game were secondary, the main task wat for the kid or teenager to open the magazine and be shocked by a strange or suggestive ad

The power of eye sight began to return as he heard impacting grunts. Another blink or two as his head lifted higher. Now the ninja could see clearly but it was too late. Yang had become far closer than he liked, but his secondary attacks had hit. It was a blissful moment to see such vivid red staining the skin, like a painter. Sub-Zero always had thought of himself as a master of death in kombat, this was just as good.
Yet the woman had apparently done this purposefully, for the enemy now wielded his own forged power. There was but moments reaction time for him to lift both arms and defend from that launched figure. Her weight impacted upon his taller form without injury, but it knocked him too the ground. Now looking up at the figure he was sent to kill, who had gone completely wild.
Shock settled in. Sub-Zero, Bi-Han, being stabbed by his own weapon. His voice released grunts of every injury as he blocked any critical blows. The obvious fact he had underestimated her... She fought with zeal and speed of Shirai Ryu. He hissed and slammed one elbow down to try and hit that ice still embedded with the flesh, his power spiking to make it explode while shoving to get Yang off.
The pain was nothing more than a driving catalyst now that helped to increase the coursing determination in every single nerve ending, surging forwards as every single spark of stinging reminders surged in muscles. Bringing heat and warmth to chase off the cold. There were many good reasons as too why the woman had survived so long and fought through the years without falling in battle, one of which was the sheer force of will combined with the ever sharpened skills within the arsenal Yang had been trained with.
Now that he had been on the ground, Yang had locked her thighs down to keep herself over him and not let this bastard have leverage. The ever rising power within the marrow of her very bones was leaving each hit harder and harder, much like a steadily building pressure that would not stop. Each stab through soft armor and into skin satisfying. Red for red, tit for tat. She could end this now, there just needed to be one right move, the right opening-
Impact. Raw, painful, cold. Yang released a cry of pain as she felt the slam of Sub-Zero’s limb against the frozen spike that remained on her. The resulting shattered explosion of ice tore the skin further, and sent finer shards deeper into the muscle as the force he had used made her crash backwards. Rolling along with the momentum with her backwards somersault, before getting back up onto her feet. Sanguine rivers ran down her limbs to stain clothes while muscles tensed. Yang flicked her injured arm upwards, and closed the fist tight, crushing the ice in that hand. A rush of black and white stripes across the injuries she had acquired, applying pressure against them with the magical capability she held to stop the bleeding until this fight could end, until there would be a chance for medical treatment.
The hand holding the other final ice shard flipped it around in her palm, shoving mote after mote of white searing light into it’s core. Causing the edges to splinter, and fractures appear within it’s creation. “Cool trick. Let me try.” Voice spoken in calm conviction, as she snapped that arm outwards in well trained manner, knowing how to get this object to fly straight as it careened towards Sub-Zero at high speed. It’d explode on impact, as he’d done for her.

Aircraft Heat Exchanger Market Type Outlook, Vertical Viewpoint, Value Chain Analysis & Vendor Landscape
The global aircraft heat exchanger market is expected to grow from an estimated USD 1.3 billion in 2021 to USD 2.0 billion by 2026, at a CAGR of 9.2% during the forecast period of 2021-2026. Some of the factors fueling the market’s growth include increasing demand for effective cooling and heating in commercial aircrafts and increase in military spending in many countries worldwide.
Based on design, there are mainly two types of heat exchanger used in aircrafts that is plate and fin type and other one is flat tube type. For the forecast period flat tube type of aircraft heat exchanger is expected to show the higher CAGR as compared to plate and fin type. Also, flat tube type heat exchanger would drive the replacement or aftermarket.
“The fixed-wing aircraft segment is projected to grow at the highest CAGR during the forecast period”
Browse In-depth Insights: https://www.marketsandmarkets.com/Market-Reports/aircraft-heat-exchanger-market-20018090.html
Based on platform, the aircraft heat exchanger market has been segmented into fixed-wing aircraft, rotary-wing aircraft, and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Aircraft heat exchangers differ, in terms of application and configuration in different types of aircraft. They also differ in numbers for narrow body aircraft, wide body aircraft, very large body aircraft, and business jets. The fixed wing segment is expected to grow at the highest CAGR during the forecast period. Factors positively impacting the aircraft heat exchanger market with regards to this section are rising demand of narrow body commercial aircrafts and more connectivity across regions.
“The Electronics Pod Cooling segment accounts for the largest market size during the forecast period”
Based on application, aircraft heat exchanger market is segmented into Environment Control System (ECS), Engine system, Electronic Pod Cooling and Hydraulics. Heat exchangers in aircraft are used in engine, avionics, and environmental control systems, which help to control heat and maintain temperature by removing excess heat from the systems. Heat exchangers are used to cool down hydraulic fluid and is located inside the fuel tank. Electronic Pod cooling involves cooling of electronic devices such as chips, IC packages and many other airtight packaged devices. With increasing demand of automation, more electronics package needs to be fitted in smaller and tighter space and hence it has the highest increase in the CAGR during the forecast period.
“The aftermarket segment accounts for the largest market size during the forecast period”
Based on vendor, the aircraft heat exchanger market has been segmented into OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) and aftermarket. The aftermarket segment includes maintenance, repairing upgrading and replacement of aircraft heat exchanger components and systems. The aftermarket vendor sub-segment is expected to lead the aircraft heat exchanger market due to high spending on upgraded avionics systems, and replacement of overused thermal management components and systems. However, increase in aircraft deliveries and domestic manufacturing of aircrafts will drive the growth of OEM segment.
Regional Outlook
“Asia Pacific is projected to grow at the highest CAGR during the forecast period.”
Asia Pacific is one of the emerging markets for aircraft heat exchanger in terms of research and development activities, deployment, and the presence of some of the key market players. The major countries under this region are the Japan, India and China. The drivers for the growth of the aircraft heat exchanger market in Japan include the need to improve aircraft systems of the Japan Self-Defense Forces, including the Japan Air Self- Defense Force (JASDF), Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, and the rising demand for better thermal management system in commercial airlines. Rising government focus on military and defense will boost market in India. China is one of the fastest-growing economies in the world. The country is expected to increase its military spending in aircraft systems, including Aircraft heat exchangers, as well as in modern military equipment to remain technologically advanced in the defense sector. Domestic airlines in China are increasingly engaged in contracts with aftermarket service suppliers to enhance their aircraft operations. Also, factors like cheap and high skilled personnel for manufacturing of aircraft heat exchangers is boosting the market in Asia Pacific region.
Key Companies Outlook
Major players operating in the aircraft heat exchanger market include Meggitt PLC (Britain), AMETEK(US), TAT Technologies (Israel), Triumph Group (US) and Honeywell (US). These key players offer aircraft heat exchangers applicable for commercial or defense aircrafts, spacecrafts, UAV, UCAVs and have well-equipped and strong distribution networks across the North American, European, Asia Pacific, and the Rest of the World (the Middle East, Latin America, and Africa).
AMETEK (US) is a leading supplier of plate fin heat exchangers and surface coolers to the aerospace and defence industry. Its product portfolio includes air cooled oil coolers, air to air heat exchangers, precoolers and buffer coolers, engine surface coolers, evaporators and condensers, fuel cooled oil coolers, oil heat exchangers, gearbox cooling systems, and hydraulic coolers made of non-corrosive and lightweight aluminum. In September 2020, AMETEK MRO Defense Drake Air received a contract from the Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City, OK, for the repair and manufacturing of C-5 primary and secondary heat exchangers.
TAT Technologies Ltd is a publicly traded Israel-based company with many years of experience in the design and manufacturing of heat exchangers for commercial aircraft. Liebherr Aerospace (Germany), Cessna (US), Pilatus (Switzerland), Boeing (US), Honda Jet (US), Embraer (Brazil), Airbus (Europe), and CRJ (Canada) are some of the prominent customers of TAT. In 2019, TAT entered a 5-year agreement worth USD 20 million with a leading European system manufacturer in the aerospace industry for the supply of heat exchangers.

Biotechnology degree holders are eligible for post of science teacher: Gujarat HC - Times of India
New Post has been published on https://apzweb.com/biotechnology-degree-holders-are-eligible-for-post-of-science-teacher-gujarat-hc-times-of-india/
Biotechnology degree holders are eligible for post of science teacher: Gujarat HC - Times of India
AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat high court has held that candidates with degree in the subject of Biotechnology are eligible for appointment as science and maths teachers for the post of sikshan sahayaks in secondary and higher secondary schools. Such candidates with degrees in Biotechnology were rejected by the authorities after holding them ineligible.
In allowing the candidature of people with B.Sc and M.Sc in the subject of Biotechnology, Justice Biren Vaishnav accepted the contention on behalf of the candidates that “biology is the basic science whereas Biotechnology is much more advanced stage of biology”. The court also agreed with the argument that no university in Gujarat awards degree called B.Sc (Biology) or M.Sc (Biology).
The HC also further said that it is in agreement of submission that Biotechnology is a branch of science in which biological, physical and chemical – all three tools and techniques are used/devised in order to reduce time, cost, risk involved in the production or maintenance of a process. In simple language, biology is a science while biotechnology is a branch of biology. It is an industry. While biology involves the study of living organisms, biotechnology involves the use of biology for the benefit of the mankind.
With these observations, the HC ordered the state authorities to issue appointment orders to the petitioners because they had cleared all required eligibility criteria including that of the Teachers Aptitude Test (TAT).
There was recruitment for the posts of sikshan sahayk in 2017. The State Education Board accepted online applications of candidates with degree of graduation or post-graduation in the subjects of Maths/Physics/Chemistry/Biology/Botany/Zoology only. Since the subject of Biotechnology was not included, the online applications of these candidates were not accepted. This brought them to the high court challenging non-inclusion of Biotechnology as a subject in the list, said petitioners’ advocate S H Iyer.

Guest Post: Eric Fuller--Ticketing 2020. New Decade, Who Dis?
Eric originally published this post on Medium. I wanted to share it with y’all because he highlights the utility of loyalty programs. I’ve been a huge fan of those going back to the years when Howard Schultz owned the Sonics and had a loyalty program that is still a decade beyond what any entertainment property is offering now.
Welcome to the camp
I guess you all know why we’re here
My name is Tommy and I became aware this year
…….
Tickets, tickets, tickets. What’s new, what’s old and of what should you become aware? Well, let’s start here: everything you learned in the past decade is going out the window. The combination of big data, dynamic pricing and the blurring of the primary, secondary and ancillary ticketing sources into one big amorphous mass combined with the accelerating bias toward knowing just exactly who is in each seat is rewriting everything we once thought we knew.
First, the U.S. government hasn’t yet given up investigating how ticketing really works. There’s a new set of hearings by the Oversight and Investigations subcommittee in Washington D.C. on February 26, 2020. (Live stream at 10 am EST link: http://bit.ly/37ZNkjM)
It’s part of Congress’ ongoing efforts to figure out what’s lurking behind the curtain and under the hood of the major ticket markets.
The hearing, titled: In the Dark: Lack of Transparency in the Live Event Ticketing Industry is discussed in this article from TicketNews:
https://www.ticketnews.com/2020/02/house-ticketing-industry-hearing-february-26/
The house committee on Energy and Commerce summoned leaders of the biggest ticketing companies to the hearing:
https://files.constantcontact.com/7c26540f001/ddf566f8-5694-4804-933f-540fcb95b722.pdf
The leaders anticipated are truly powerful:
Amy Howe President & Chief Operating Officer Ticketmaster
Bryan Perez Chief Executive Officer AXS
Stephanie Burns Vice President and General Counsel StubHub
Ryan Fitts Vice President, Legal Affairs Vivid Seats
Don Vaccaro Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer TicketNetwork
Joe Choti President & Chief Executive Officer Tickets.com
At the same time, in the EU (or what’s left of it) there is a new push to outlaw the secondary market:
https://www.thesun.ie/news/5123468/legislation-ticket-touts-eu-approval/
And, Pearl Jam is trying to crash the party by writing its own letter about how to best regulate ticketing:
https://www.politico.com/newsletters/huddle/2020/02/18/what-pearl-jam-wrote-in-a-letter-to-rep-frank-pallone-488349
But, Representative Bill Pascrell isn’t interested in what they have to say:
https://www.insidernj.com/press-release/pascrell-rejects-pearl-jam-criticism-boss-act/
The biggest wild card to start off these hearings may be the now complete acquisition of StubHub by Viagogo. How big a deal is this? Think if Uber were bought by Tesla. Two disruptive companies, consolidated, led by Eric Baker, a man who doesn’t just march to his own tune — he composes it and makes you sing it even if the refrain is disharmonious. This company combines scale, global reach and a complete ferocity in approach. They won’t just move fast and break things. I predict they’ll invent new paradigms of how to blur primary and secondary markets, consolidate their own acquired inventory and that supplied by broker feeds, and create new pricing mechanisms to break away from the rest of the industry who’s only move to date has been to keep bumping up their fee percentages.
We’re not gonna take it
Gonna break it
Gonna shake it
Let’s forget it better still
……..
Blaming “scalpers” for high prices isn’t new for 2020, but it’s still surprising given that the global resale market for tickets will likely exceed $20 billion this year. Even more surprising, once fierce opponents such as Rage Against The Machine are “scalping” their own tickets in a strange blend of allowing both Platinum pricing into the primary distribution of their tickets while they hold back 10% of their ticket inventory in order to sell them for extra high prices with the excess money collected donated to charity.
This is an interesting take on “if you can’t beat them, join them.” It’s reminiscent of Metallica putting 92,000 tickets directly into the secondary market, but enacted with a social conscience. What’s not to like? If you want a ticket to the show, and you have the extra money, buy what’s left which are these highly inflated tickets and soothe yourself knowing the excess cost you paid went to do good rather than into the pockets of the half demented, lecherous spawn of Satan or however the media today wishes to portray those entrepreneurs who place their own capital at risk to take ownership of tickets which hold no value once an event takes place. Just one small problem though, the secondary market pricing runs purely on supply and demand. Hi demand, low supply equals high prices. Low demand, high supply equals low prices. Because, you know, math.
RATM is putting their embellished tickets (“now, with a free capital infusion to the worthy cause of our choice”) on sale for a price which is higher than that at which the free market is trading their tickets. In this truly convoluted world, the tickets being scalped by real scalpers are a better deal than the tickets being scalped by the band trying to block scalpers. Or, more cynically, the professionals who assess risk and value in the secondary market and move prices to balance supply and demand like a Vegas sports book moves odds are better at pricing at scale than a band whose intention is to completely dominate their own ticket distribution when they might be better served working on their chord progressions.
It was Kid Rock who really did this one right. Remember a few years ago when he paired up with Wal*Mart, dictated to Ticketmaster what their fees would be and put all the tickets in the arena for sale at $20, except for the best 3,000 or so which he simply sent into the secondary market to fetch whatever the market would bear? You can’t micro-manage prices on a tour of 10,000+ seat venues. It’s better to let most of the people get a $20 ticket and, if I recall, the beer prices were also capped at very friendly prices. For those who just absolutely have to be close to the front, they were welcome to pay what that cost. For everyone else, it was welcome to my house where the “Cowboy with the top let back and the sunshine shining” could “give a toast to the sun, drink with the stars, get thrown in the mix and tossed out of bars.”
See me, feel me
Touch me, heal me
See me, feel me
Touch me, heal me
…….
Moving front and center this year is a new focus on an old friend: loyalty programs. I keep hearing more and more about markets building out programs to mimic airline frequent flyer incentivization. There’s discounts, free returns, early access, discounts, vouchers — you name it, someone’s got it. The only thing I haven’t seen yet is the companion pass, but undoubtedly somebody has a power point slide ready to go arguing one way to fill an partially sold arena is to offer a free companion ticket. That, in venue speak, is how to bring in one more mouth to fill with liquor, salty snacks and one more body on which to hang a newly purchased t-shirt, hoodie or ball cap. Because no one likes to go to live events alone, an extra ticket is almost as good as a puppy for getting attention among the singles or not so singles given this new age of polyamory. I won’t ever forget once in the day selling an Insane Clown Posse ticket to a fellow over Craigslist who was so excited to go that he offered me his girlfriend for the evening. When I declined he was truly crestfallen to discover that, although I like the band, I didn’t identify as a Juggalo, wasn’t really in the mood to fly to Detroit for some curious version of tit for tat, and although I’m always open to adventure, really thought I’d prefer to preserve the relationship I held dear.
I’m a huge fan of incentive reward programs. I was there at the inception of the AA Advantage and UA Mileage Plus programs. These programs tilted all the assumptions of travel planners. Executives who would have never thought to make a stop enroute to their destination now spent hours charting out a five segment roundtrip so they could earn a free first class airline ticket to Disneyland.
Truly, airline miles presaged crypto. Miles acted as a store of value which could be exchanged for cash by selling to a broker, or for travel benefits such as airline seats or hotel rooms. It took years before the airlines figured out what governments have long known: currency devaluation. But, once the genie was let loose, publishing new and less favorable award charts requiring higher and higher numbers of miles to redeem a flight became standard practice until the newest trend of simply publishing no chart at all began to take hold. Now, on certain airlines like Delta, the price to convert miles to a seat is whatever the price is that day. There’s no longer a chart like in the old days to tell you that first class roundtrip is 100,000 miles, while coach is only 45,000.
Loyalty programs work. But, they have to be carefully designed. People are smart and they quickly figure out the loopholes and ways to maximize their benefits. One major food company to put codes redeemable for mileage beneath the peel off foil of pudding cups. It seemed like a great idea. The company drove sales and the participating airlines got money to participate. But, there’s little value in a small number of airline miles. Somebody bought enough cups to earn 1.2 million miles and donated the pudding within to charity in return for receiving their help to peel off the labels.
Man Gets Millions of Air Travel Miles from Pudding Cups
David Phillips of Davis, California, really did rack up millions of frequent-flyer airline miles as described in a…
www.snopes.com
Mileage times a million is significant. Nobody saw that coming. Well, almost nobody. There is a small group of people who made a market in those miles, me among them. I bought and sold 20 billion miles while I went to graduate school. That was really fun.
Want one more? The U.S. mint sells rolls of collectable coins which have never been circulated. You could buy them with your credit card and the mint would ship the coins to you for free. How long do you think it was before people with a mileage credit card began buying coins $10,000 at a time to get 10,000 miles. Then, when the coins arrived, still in their wrappers, took the coins to the bank, deposited them, and used the $10,000 to pay off their credit card. Do that twice a month and you’ve got 240,000 miles for free. Ultimately, the mint caught on, so that game’s over but there’s always another way to play.
Listening to you, I get the music
Gazing at you, I get the heat
Following you, I get climb the mountain
I get excitement at your feet
…….
DEMAND ( demand.area120.com ), the new product from Google is another lightning strike at the established order. Ticketing has not yet truly had a tech disruption. Yes, I know that mobile tickets are rapidly making paper stock tickets irrelevant, and that electronic secondary markets have broadened distribution, but let’s pull back the lens. Ticketing is still a tug of war where acts, shows and teams seek two things: fans and venues. There is an entire industry built of people and companies who have built the relationships to route tours, secure venues, assure the stages get built and the sound systems function and handle the mundane day to day problems when there are people and trucks moving from city to city.
What happens when technology replaces much of the work these people — the promoters — have done old school? It is still the promoter who sets ticket prices by giving the primary market the marching orders of when and how to move pricing. And, it is the promoter in conjunction who is making the decisions of which cities to play and at what sized venue. These are still “gut” decisions.
But, DEMAND and similar data driven tools may change the game. What happens when all of the pertinent information which used to take a lifetime in the business is available on a smart phone? There is an instructive example: when’s the last time anyone used a travel agent? It used to be that if you wanted an airline ticket, it was the travel agent who got it for you. They had the special computer system that could reserve a flight and issue the ticket on the special ticket paper which the airlines required they keep locked in a safe at night. And, they booked your hotel room by calling the phone numbers listed in a directory which weighted about ten pounds and listed contact information for every significant hotel in the world. Then, the internet and computers made public the ability to book flights and hotels yourself. Making reservations for planes and rooms became self-serve friendly. In March, 2002 most airlines told the travel agents who had served them since their inception that, thank you very much, we won’t need you anymore. Instead of paying agents a 10% + commission for each sale, these airlines would now pay nothing. It was up to the travel agents to add a surcharge to the price of the tickets to cover their services. As you might expect, once their “free” service was no longer free, most people quit using agents and went to the internet to book their own flights.
What does this mean for live event promoters? Well, the parallels are pretty clear. If demand, pricing and routing can be divined by easily available technology, then promoters have only two remaining virtues: the upfront money it takes to build the tour and the capacity to manage the day to day decisions which have to be made with so many moving parts. If there’s data to predict a tour’s profitability, then there will probably be risk capital available to fund it, particularly in a world with tiered distribution: primary and secondary prices can be made to work together rather than against each other. Assuming the act can secure funding to mount their tour, they can hire a tour manager to handle the issues which arise on the road.
What happens next? I think the venue owners have the most risk. Their building are a lot like hotels. They have no value unless they are filled. And, as more companies compete to build venues, there are more and more choices around the world. If promoters get marginalized, the next domino to fall is the ability of venue owners to maintain their margins. Ultimately, it only takes two competing similar venues to start a bidding war. Three venues would assure one. Again, here’s an example: in Los Angeles AEG owns Staples Center and MSG owns the Forum. Either is a great venue for an act looking to sell 12,000 + tickets. They are fighting hard to confirm acts, offering benefits at other similar venues they own in order to get the L.A. show. But, here’s the twist: Steve Ballmer (Microsoft billionaire) owns the Los Angeles Clippers and he wants to build them their own arena very close to the Forum. MSG is fighting in every forum: politically, in court, lobbying the neighborhood to prevent that venue from being built. Why? Because then there would be three similar venues competing in L.A. and we’re only one step away from someone building the venue equivalent of Priceline.
As we enter this next decade, the convergence of big capital, artificial intelligence, mobile ticketing and the increasing demand for live entertainment by a generation which gets all its needs served by smartphone in milliseconds will be transformative. In every instance where prices get out of hand, or supply and demand are imbalanced the markets correct and there’s reversion to the mean. For me, when I’m unsure of what to expect next, I look to the sages of the past, like Pete Townshend who wrote the song threaded through this piece. Ultimately, in commerce as in politics, all power resides with the people. I can’t wait to hear them.
Right behind you, I see the millions
On you, I see the glory
From you, I get opinions
From you, I get the story
We’re Not Gonna Take It — The Who
Let me know what you think.

Beijing’s security law keeps transforming Hong Kong

Beijing’s security law keeps transforming Hong Kong
A summary of key developments in August
Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam at a press conference on August 18, 2020. Photo: Kelly Ho/HKFP.
This post, written by Jennifer Creery, was originally published by Hong Kong Free Press on September 1, 2020. The following version was lightly edited and is published via a content partnership with Global Voices. Hong Kong’s national security law has thrown a city scarred by months of political unrest into further uncertainty, as millions continue to adjust to a new normal. Two months after its enactment, pro-democracy activists been rounded up and government officials targeted with tough sanctions amid an increasingly hairy diplomatic dispute between superpowers. Below is a summary of key developments in August, two months after the new legislation that criminalises subversion, secession, foreign interference and inference with transportation and other infrastructure, came into effect.
Spiralling tensions with the US
In one of the boldest punitive actions yet, Washington imposed, on August 7, sanctions on 11 individuals accused of undermining Hong Kong’s “autonomy and restricting the freedom of expression or assembly of the citizens.” Chief Executive Carrie Lam, police chief Chris Tang, ex-police commissioner Stephen Lo, security secretary John Lee and justice secretary Teresa Cheng were among those listed, in a move designed to bar them from the US financial system. Beijing hit back three days later, sanctioning 11 Americans – including senators Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz – over “gross interference” in domestic affairs. Weeks later, US authorities officially axed three bilateral agreements with Hong Kong on extradition and tax exemptions, while demanding exporters label their goods “Made in China” instead of “Made in Hong Kong” following the cancellation of the city’s special trading status.
Extradition treaties shelved; new immigration routes
France joined a growing list of countries suspending their extradition treaties with Hong Kong in light of the security law. Previously, Canada, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand – part of the “Five Eyes” intelligence alliance – decided to do the same. Germany, meanwhile, halted their agreement due to the city’s decision to push back its legislative election by one year in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. In August, Australia also introduced new visa arrangements for Hong Kong passport holders, making it easier for students, temporary graduates and skilled workers to gain permanent residency status.
Mass arrests; newspaper raid
Flooding into the offices of the maligned pro-democracy tabloid Apply Daily, hundreds of police officers conducted their most daring raid yet under the security legislation. They also nabbed owner Jimmy Lai, his two sons and four top staffers during the August 10 operation. Local media reported that the Next Digital media mogul was arrested on suspicion of colluding with foreign forces – an offence under the new law – as well as fraud. Next Digital’s CEO, Cheung Kim-hung, CFO Royston Chow and COO Chow Tat-kuen were among those apprehended. Executive Mark Simon, who is overseas, remains wanted. Later in the evening, the force arrested 23-year-old Agnes Chow – an ex-member of the now-disbanded political group Demosisto – and two former student activists, including a freelancer for the UK’s ITN Wilson Li also on suspicion of colluding with foreign forces.
Reports of democrats tailed as activist flees
Multiple pro-democracy figures complained of being tailed by unknown individuals in August. Sunny Cheung, a former spokesperson of the now-disbanded Hong Kong Higher Institutions International Affairs Delegation, wrote in a now-deleted post that he suspected three of his alleged stalkers were national security personnel. Agnes Chow wrote on Facebook that “suspicious men” had appeared around the clock outside her house, filming using their phone and appearing to work in shifts. Police tackled Democratic Party lawmaker Ted Hui to the ground after he confronted people inside a vehicle he believed had been following him. Beijing-funded Ta Kung Pao later confirmed the men were reporters for the newspaper. Vice-Convener of the Civil Human Rights Front Figo Chan also complained of two men wandering around a radio station where he and fellow convenor Jimmy Sham were recording a programme on August 14.
UK halts military training deal
Amid increased scrutiny of overseas military training, the UK announced it would temporarily halt its military training arrangement with the Hong Kong Police Force. A spokesperson for the ex-colonial power cited coronavirus restrictions but also highlighted Westminster’s concerns over the effect of the security law on civil liberties.
Censorship fears
Six publishers revised the content in eight sets of Liberal Studies textbooks following a voluntarily screening by the Education Bureau, prompting censure from the Hong Kong Professional Teachers’ Union, which accused publishers of censoring sections on civil disobedience objectives. The Catholic diocese also asked its primary and secondary schools to enhance students’ awareness of the security law and cultivate “correct values on national identity,” while guarding against campus politicisation. Meanwhile, the city’s public broadcaster RTHK removed an interview with exiled ex-lawmaker Nathan Law, citing concerns over publishing material relating to an interviewee reportedly “wanted” on suspicion of violating the security law. There are no laws or regulations which state that the press cannot interview activists sought by police.
Visa freeze
Foreign nationals hoping to work in Hong Kong have suffered months-long visa application delays and fewer approvals, often without explanation. The city serves as the Asian headquarters for many overseas companies and international news organisations. Both Stand News and The Standard cited sources as saying work visas for journalists were being vetted by a new national security unit within the Immigration Department, stoking press freedom concerns. Hong Kong Free Press last Thursday was denied a work visa for established journalist and incoming editor Aaron Mc Nicholas following an almost six-month wait. The Immigration Department’s rejection was handed down without an official reason. In July, Hong Kong authorities refused to renew the work permit of The New York Times correspondent Chris Buckley, who was ousted from China amid a diplomatic dispute. The US newspaper also cited uncertainty over Hong Kong’s prospects as a regional hub in its decision to move half of its operations in the territory to the South Korean capital of Seoul. The practice of denying or issuing short work visas to journalists is often seen in the mainland, where tighter reporting restrictions exist.
China captures fleeing Hongkongers
At around 9 a.m. on August 23, China’s marine police detained 12 people believed to be Hong Kong activists on a speedboat headed to Taiwan near Ninepin Islands, according to the Guangdong Coast Guard’s official Weibo account. It said the individuals were suspected of unlawfully crossing a national border. Local media reported that activist Andy Li was among those seized. He was arrested under the national security law on August 10 during a round-up. All onboard the vessel were criminally charged – including in connection with homemade bomb cases – and had been released on bail.
