Alia knew nobody liked being ill, but she hated it. Especially with everything that was going on, it felt like nothing more than an inconvenience she simply couldn’t afford. It was for that reason she’d insisted on staying at the school rather than going home; rather than letting her mother and stepdad worry about her constantly. Freddy and Carolyn were bad enough, but she could cope with them.  

She sneezed into the tissue and cursed under her breath, knowing that finding the right place in her notes again was going to be a massive headache. One she simply didn’t need.

‘That was the cutest sneeze I’ve ever heard,’ said Tamas, causing her to look up at him sharply. There was a slight smirk on his lips, but Alia could have sworn there was the slightest hint of concern behind his dark eyes as well.

‘What do you want, Tamas?’ she asked, slightly grateful for a reason not to look back down at the history book. The words on the page were making her stomach roil a little.

‘To check on you,’ he said simply, as if it were the most natural thing in the world. ‘For the past week Care and Freddy have been worried, but they’re pussyfooting around something.’

‘I’ve not been sick a week,’ she reasoned as he took an uninvited seat opposite her.

‘So what has been wrong?’

‘None of your business,’ she told him simply, shifting her attention back to the book. She might not of particularly liked him, but she appreciated Tamas doing this for Carolyn.

He heaved a deep sigh, and Alia knew that he wouldn’t be leaving her any time soon. But, as long as he stayed quiet, she found she didn’t really mind the unexpected company.
