Music is one of my favorite things in this world. Whenever I'm feeling sad, happy, heartbroken, or whatever I feel, music magnifies those emotions. Music is what feelings sound like to me. If there's anything in this world that can understand me the best, it's music. If you ask me what genre I'm into, my music taste is actually very broad. I like Western, K-pop, J-pop, Thai music, indie, and a lot of different genres, but for me, nothing beats OPM songs. OPM songs have the ability to get you right in the feels, that hugot moment, regardless of the memories you have while listening to them. The lyrics of OPM songs are what elevate their beauty. Filipino, our language, is very poetic. Napaka ganda ng wika nating mga pilipino. Our language is poetic and beautiful in every word. That's what makes OPM songs so different and beautiful. The lyrics of the songs always speak about your unexplainable feelings. For some reason, OPM songs always find the right word to describe our feelings or the right words to say to a person. For today's blog, I would like to talk to you about some of my favorite OPM songs and my interpretations of them.
CTTO: Cup of Joe
youtube
Let's start off with one of the most underrated band that I know and my all-time favorite, Cup of Joe's Estranghero. Have you ever fallen in love with someone who gives you a lot of mixed signals? Yung mapapa "should I give up or should I just keep chasing pavements" ka nalang haha. Or have you ever been in a situation where you thought you knew someone but you didn't? Yung tipong mapapa "you're not the same person i fell in love with." Oh pak forda teleserye yarn haha. If these two situations resonate with you or if you ever went through these kinds of situations, this song is perfect for you. Because this song talks about loving someone despite the confusion and uncertainties. Now, what I love about this song is how it was composed. I love the story-telling in this song. It starts off with the question:
"Ako ay litong-lito
Saan ba ito patungo
'Di ko na alam kung dapat bang ihinto
'Di alam ang sasabihin
'Di alam ang aking gagawin
Kung mananatili sa 'yo
Minamahal kong estranghero"
And ends off with the answer:
"Kahit na litong-lito
Sa iyo pa rin tutungo
'Di man sigurado, 'di pa rin hihinto
Isa lang ang sasabihin
Isa lang ang aking gagawin
Muli kitang kikilalanin
Minamahal kong estranghero"
This song made me realize two things. First, the lyrics
"Kahit na litong-lito
Sa iyo pa rin tutungo.
'Di man sigurado, 'di pa rin hihinto"
The song tells us that no matter how many mixed signals a person gives you, you'll continue loving them either way. Confusion and uncertainties can't stop you from loving them.
The second one is from the last line which is
"Muli kitang kikilalanin, minamahal kong estranghero"
We always loved that person at their best, but loving them on the opposite side of the spectrum is a different matter. There will be times when the people we love aren't the same people we thought they were. Even when the situation changes and we are unable to recognize someone, after everything else, they will always be the person we love. The lyrics tells us that its okay, change if you must, I will get to know you again if I have to.

Another song by them that you should listen to, and is also one of my favorites, is Sagada. This song is about a love that has ended and needs to be forgotten. This song is inspired by the movie "That Thing Called Tadhana," where Sagada becomes famous as a destination for the heartbroken who want to vent their feelings.
CTTO: Up Dharma Down
youtube
Speaking of that movie and Sagada, I'm once again reminded of that particular song, Up Dharma Down's Tadhana. If you're on a road trip going to Sagada from Baguio, Tadhana must be on your playlist. Fun fact! This song was actually written in baguio. That means this song is really made for baguio haha. This song actually helped me confess to someone. I found it difficult to express my feelings at that time. It was the first time I experienced falling in love, and it was incredibly overwhelming. I usually do a great job of controlling my emotions when I like someone. However, at the moment, it was just an overwhelming feeling and I couldn't control it unless I let it out. But as many of us feel when we're confessing to someone, a lot of what-ifs come into our heads. We all know that confessing our feelings to someone is scary. A lot of people, including myself, are afraid of rejection. So when I heard the lyrics of the song and finally understood them, I realized that they actually resonated with my current situation.
"Ba't 'di pa sabihin
Ang hindi mo maamin
Ipa-uubaya na lang ba 'to sa hangin
Huwag mong ikatakot
Ang bulong ng damdamin mo"
It's either take a risk or lose a chance. We fall in love by chance, so don't be afraid; just allow yourself to experience the sensation of falling in love. Why would you try to stop the inevitable? If you're afraid of getting hurt, it's okay. That's part of love. You'll only know that you love someone if it hurts. At the end of the day, at least you won't regret anything. At least you tried. Kesa naman mapuno ako ng what-ifs diba.
CTTO: Coeli
youtube
Now, if you're looking for a good confession song, Nabibighani by Coeli is the perfect song for you. This song is one of the most beautifully composed songs I have ever heard. This song is about the art of falling in love and the endless, unfathomable joy you get while you're with your special someone. If you want a pure and heartfelt song to use to confess to your person, no doubt this is the song you're looking for.
"Kay laki ng mundo at bigla ito'y lumiliit
Natira na lang ikaw, ako, at ang buong daigdig
Mga planeta at bituin, nakisayaw sa ating damdamin
Ako'y nalunod sa iyong tingin
Ako'y nabibighani"
Oh, how I wish I had someone special to dance to this song with. Anyway, we are now down to our last song. As much as I want to talk about many songs with you all, my blog is getting longer na and ubos na english ko haha.
CTTO: Ben&Ben
youtube
If you wanna talk about pure and hearfelt songs, aba hindi magpapahuli diyan ang Ben&Ben and their most iconic love song, Araw-araw. Actually, this song is the definition of love for me. Because I believe that if you truly love someone, you will choose them regardless of the obstacles and difficulties that are thrown in your path, despite their imperfections and flaws. Without a pause, without a doubt, in a heartbeat. You'll keep choosing them. Hindi ako na niniwala sa mga kasabihang "kung para sayo, para sayo talaga" or "if its meant to be it'll find a way". Kapag hindi na sang-ayon ang mundo isasabat nyo "maybe we're not made for each other"? Haha. I believe we are only fated to do the things that we'd choose. Yes, we fall in love by chance, but we stay in love by choice. Just like how Daoming Si and Shancai, the lead pair in the enduringly popular Asian drama, chose to be together in spite of the obstacles and hardships their mother places on their path. Even if the universe was against their love, pinili pa rin nila ang isa't-isa at ipinaglaban ang pagmamahalan nila. Or how Dos waited for his Seiiki for 17 years despite the uncertainties. 17 years of choosing Seikki kahit walang kasiguraduhan. That is why I really love the lyrics of the song.
"Mahiwaga
Pipiliin ka sa araw-araw"
Love is not all about rainbows and sunshine. There will come a time when your love for someone will be tested. Love and pain exist together. When you choose to stay with them despite all the challenges and hardships, that's when you'll know if your love for them is true and genuine.
So that's it. This is the end of our blog. I hope that because of this blog, OPM has become interesting to you and I hope that it will help you enjoy our own music even more.
