What doesn’t Xiaomi, the smartphone and appliance brand, make these days? A car might be a long shot, but the company teased exactly that on Weibo on Sunday. After getting tongues wagging, Xiaomi has given its car a debut, although this car isn’t one that you can drive, nor is the design theirs.

The China company’s latest product is a remote-controlled Suzuki Jimny in 1:16 scale. Retailing for 199 yuan (RM120) in China (introductory price of 179 yuan or RM108), the RC version of Suzuki’s fourth-generation small 4×4 by Xiaomi can be controlled via smartphone, with the app installed and Bluetooth hooked up.

If the shell looks realistic, what’s under the skin is decent too. The RC Jimny’s ladder frame chassis is made from shockproof nylon material, linked to suspension with shock absorbers and coil springs. Torque from the motor goes to all wheels, which are wrapped with off-road tyres.

  This tiny Jimny comes with a digital servo, and users can steer the car by moving the phone around, manipulating the device’s g sensor. Apparently, this RC Jimny is made from over 200 components, and parts for mods are on the cards.

Xiaomi has toyed with the idea of real cars before, even if it has not materialised yet. According to the South China Morning Post, in 2017, the company reported in a regulatory filing in India that it might sell electric vehicles. Last year, Xiaomi partnered with Chinese carmaker FAW for its version of the Bestune T77 SUV, which allowed its home products to be controlled by voice command in the car.

This month, the Beijing-based company registered a Chinese trademark that roughly translates as “Xiaomi car alliance”. Earlier this year, Sony shocked CES 2020 with its Vision-S concept car – Mi-Car next?

The Tatra T87 – Powered By A Rear-Mounted Air-Cooled V8 + 100 mph Capable

The Tatra T87 was one of the most advanced cars of its age, it has all-independent suspension, a highly-aerodynamic body and they’re powered by a rear-mounted, air-cooled magnesium alloy SOHC V8 and could reach speeds of 100 mph while returning ~20 mpg – a remarkable feat for the era.

The reputation of the T87 is made up of two major parts, its reputation as a ground-breaking car for its age that would have a huge influence on automobile design and aerodynamics, and its reputation for tricky handling when driven by inexperienced drivers due to the rear-mounted V8.

During WW2 the T87 became a favourite of Nazi officers for its comfort and performance, however so many of them ended up dead because of the car’s propensity for snap oversteer (and lift-off oversteer) that the Wehrmacht Command are said to have forbidden them from use.

The T87 was primarily the work of three men, Hans Ledwinka, Paul Jaray, and Erich Übelacker. Ledwinka was one of the most important and out-of-the-box automobile engineers of his day, Jaray was a revolutionary designer who penned the shape of airships like the LZ 120 Bodensee (which strongly influenced the LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin and the LZ 129 Hindenburg), and Übelacker was a talented engineer with a slew of patents to his name.

Design for the car was based closely on the Tatra T77 however it included a number of important upgrades. The Tatra T87 uses a backbone-type chassis with a rear-mounted 2.9 litre magnesium V8 that feeds power forwards to a 4-speed transaxle, and the suspension consists of twin transverse leaf springs up front and a swing axle arrangement in the rear.

The engine is an exceptional feat of engineering in itself, it’s made from a magnesium alloy that’s lighter than a comparable aluminum alloy. It has a single overhead cam per bank and it uses air-cooling rather than a heavier liquid-cooling set up. Tatra engineers understood the potential handling difficulties of having a heavy engine out past the rear axle-line so they took significant measures to keep weight as low as possible through the use of magnesium and air-cooling.

The front trunk (can’t bring myself to use the word “frunk”) is reasonably spacious, and the interior of the car can seat 5 adults in comfort with a fold down armrest in the rear. The design of the T87’s body was state-of-the-art for the era, it’s an outstandingly aerodynamic vehicle with a drag co-efficient of just 0.36 – better than the Ferrari F50 at 0.372.

The design of the Tatra T87 is said to have caught the eye of both Hitler and Ferdinand Porsche, as a result it was used (unofficially) as an inspiration for Germany’s people’s car – the Volkswagen Beetle. So similar were the designs that a lawsuit was launched, the suit was paused when Germany invaded Czechoslovakia, however after the war Tatra restarted the case and in 1965 Volkswagen paid Tatra 1,000,000 Deutsche Marks in an out of court settlement.

Between 1936 and 1950 Tatra built 3,056 examples of the T87, they attracted a slew of important owners including  John Steinbeck, King Farouk I of Egypt, Jay Leno, Felix Wankel, and Erwin Rommel. Jay Leno famously loves his T87 and has written about it extensively over the years.

Blockchain News Ledger wins Billionaire Branson’s Tech Challenge | Blockchain News

Blockchain News  to an Australian News channel Nine News, Power Ledger, an Australia based blockchain start-up, won business tycoon Sir Richard Branson’s Extreme Tech Challenge (XTC), 2018.

The XTC challenge intends to offer entrepreneurs with the right tools to assist them in developing their tech products. The finalists of the previous challenge involved Vantage Robotics and Doctor on Demand.

About Power Ledger

Power Ledger was founded in 2016 by Jemma Green and Dave Martin. The company raised $34 million AUD in its Initial Coin Offerings the next year with an agenda to offer P2P electricity to the public using the blockchain technology. Dave Martin, the Co-founder of Power ledger shared that the victory of their renewable project shows that the public understands the potential as well as the importance of clean energy.

The Power Ledger bagged grants worth millions of dollars at the event that was organized at Branson’s Caribbean island last weekend. In addition to the grants, the company further receives guidance from major tech firms like Amazon and IBM. The company’s Co-founder, Dave Martin said that it was a ‘massive endorsement’ as well as an honour for the firm to bag support from Branson.

Although, the finalists for XTC challenge were revealed earlier this year, the jury took nine months to announce the winning team. It is during this period that Power Ledger developed its solution and released three different applications. In August this year, the firm teamed up with BCPG, an electric power generation firm, and began its trial power trading at Bangkok’s T77 precinct.

The testing permits citizens to sell and buy surplus renewable energy utilizing blockchain technology.

Newer Products on the Table

According to a local news outlet’s press report, Power Ledger revealed information about its latest product AGE (Asset Germination Event) token. The security token is to be distributed amongst retail shareholders who co-own renewable energy assets. The token is designed with an aim to motivate the public to invest in clean energy and allow them to share their profits on a decentralized platform.

The company intended to target investors who have been initially refused the opportunity to participate in renewable projects. The tokens will be supplied once the firm obtains a commercial solar panel and grid-connected battery. The funds acquired post the distribution of energy from these resources will be paid to the investors in AGE tokens.

However, Power Ledger team said that the process is in its final stage but the launch date of the security token is yet to be finalized.
