USAF F-35 Demonstration Team announces new pilot and commander
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 03/02/2024 - 08:30 in Demonstration Squads, Military
U.S. Air Force Captain Melanie "MACH" Kluesner, pilot of the F-35A Lightning II assigned to the 421º Fighter Squadron, became the new certified pilot and commander of the F-35A Demonstration Team, during the Heritage Flight Training Course of the Air Combat Command at Davis-Monthan Air Base, Arizona, on March 1º, 2024.
Kluesner comes from a military family and was inspired from a very young age by her parents, both U.S. Air Force pilots, to become a fighter pilot.

“When I was a child, I really appreciated my parents, family and friends who believed in me and encouraged me to follow my dream of becoming a fighter pilot,” Kluesner said. "My father was a demonstration pilot of the Pacific Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon in the 1980s and my mother was the first class of women graduated from the Air Force Academy. She graduated in pilot training as a qualified hunter, but at that time women were not allowed to pilot fighters. My parents are a great inspiration to me and have incredible stories of their careers."

After graduating from the University of Southern California, Kluesner was commissioned with the U.S. Air Force in 2014. She is a veteran combat fighter pilot with more than 1,000 hours of experience in a variety of aircraft, including the T-6A Texan II, T-38 Talon, F-16 Fighting Falcon, F-35B and F-35A Lightning II.
Tumblr media
"It was a long way to get where I am and there is nothing more rewarding than doing a job you love for something that is bigger than yourself," Kluesner said. "To be the demonstration pilot means spreading this message to the next generation and I am very excited for the start of the air show season."
Tumblr media
The commander of the F-35A Demonstration Team is not only responsible for an itinerant team of 14 maintainers and support personnel, but also reinforces the team's mission around the world each year, showing the F-35's combat capabilities and its unique experiences to recruit, retain and inspire thousands of spectators in each air show.
"I think it's very important for people to realize that if you want to be a fighter pilot or serve in the Air Force, it doesn't matter how you look or if you fit the specific mold," Kluesner explained. "What matters is to be willing to remain disciplined, work hard, work as a team and worry about serving your country. I am honored to be in this position and I hope that everyone who watches the demonstration will feel inspired to dream big, just as I was when I was a child."

My previous photo talked about the USAF’s use of the Beech T-34A Mentor as a primary trainer in the 1950s. This photo is of the Navy’s version, the T-34B. ⁣ ⁣ Defense Department rules were that if two services used the same aircraft, they had to split the research and development costs. To get around this rule, the Navy mandated a sufficient number of changes to their version of the Mentor that it warranted its own variant designation (T-34B) and thus the Navy didn’t have to split the R&D costs with the USAF. ⁣ ⁣ The Navy ordered 423 of the T-34B which went into production a year after the USAF’s T-34A variant. Most of the aircraft were based at Saufley Field, an outlying airfield of NAS Pensacola, but small numbers of T-34Bs were assigned to headquarters squadrons and station flights to allow Navy and Marine Corps pilots to maintain flight proficiency while assigned to non-flying billets. ⁣ ⁣ After 16 years of use, the T-34B was phased out of Navy training service and replaced with the T-34C Turbo Mentor which had a Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-25 turboprop. The T-34C entered service in 1975 and has now been replaced by the Beech/Raytheon T-6A Texan II. ⁣ ⁣ Some T-34Bs were passed on the Navy and Marine Corps flying clubs. This particular Mentor wears the colors of VT-1, the “Eaglets”, which were based at Saufley Field outside of Pensacola. The “2S” tail code was used by VT-1. Another squadron, VT-5, was also based with VT-1 at Saufley Field. ⁣ ⁣ #avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #KRBD #RBD #Dallas #airport #texas #igtexas #Beech #Beechcraft #T34 #Mentor #mil_aviation_originals #instaaviation #aviationlovers #aviationphotography #flight #AvgeekSchoolofKnowledge #AvGeeksAero (at Dallas Executive Airport) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4ZEJM4hMDu/?igshid=cjpgy7ozn5dt

IMAGES: USAF T-6 Texan II with 'Jolly Rogers' painting
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 05/20/22 - 11:00 AM in Military
The 14th Flight Training Wing painted a T-6A in a painting scheme that has a Jolly Roger on the tail of the turboprop aircraft.
On May 13, at Columbus Air Base, Mississippi, the 14th Flight Training Wing of the U.S. Air Force unveiled its newest special-painting aircraft 'heritage', a T-6 Texan II in the colors of the Jolly Rogers.
A T-6 Texan II was chosen to be painted in honor of all First Assignment Instructor Pilots (FAIP) at Columbus Air Base, due to its importance in the mission to create world-class pilots. At the tail of the special aircraft, the T-6 is a skull and crossed bones in black and white, reminiscent of the patch used in the FAIP uniforms of the 14th FTW, the symbol of the Jolly Rogers.
Tumblr media
FAIPs are pilots who graduated from the Specialized Training of Undergraduate Pilots and have been transferred to their base as instructors.
Colonel Jeremy Bergin, deputy commander of the 14th FTW, a previous FAIP, said a few words at the inauguration.
"I'm always surprised when I see students being approved as FAIP," Bergin said. "Some of them are super happy and some of them are less happy. But the only truth is that no matter what happens if you try to take the FAIP flag out of your arms, they won't let it go because they deserved it."
Tumblr media
FAIPs at Columbus Air Base can be assigned to any of the flight training squadrons to instruct on the T-6, T-38C Talon or T-1A Jayhawk.
Lieutenant Colonel Russell Kirkland, commander of the 41st Flight Training Squadron, also spoke at the inauguration and said that the mission of the 14th FTW to create pilots could not be completed without its FAIPs.
Tumblr media
"All of you are the heart and soul of your squads," Kirkland said. "You are the ones who bring life to the morality and mission of our unity. You are the closest instructor to the squads to remember what it was like to be a student."
After his speech, Kirkland cut the tape, which officially added the T-6 of the FAIP heritage to the 14th FTW fleet of more than 200 aircraft.
