🍂🥀🍂 Karbala a war of 72 that left a lesson for the billions.
🥀 Writer ~ Sahil Abas
“I am not leaving (from Medina) as a rebellion, oppressor and transgressor, instead my purpose is to reform the nation (Ummah) of my grandfather. The only methodology to do this reformation is Amr Bil Maroof (Inviting towards Known values) and Nahi Anal Munkar (Forbidding from evils), that is I wish to reform the nation (Ummah) by the method Amr Bil Maroof and Nahi Anal Munkar. It is not that I am the first person who is adopting this method to reform a nation, before me my great grandfather and father both have adopted this method only. I also desire to follow their character (Seerah) of doing Amr Bil Maroof and Nahi Anal Munkar for reforming the nation (Ummah) .”
(📖Mawassae Kalematul Imam Hussain — Page 290-291)
🍂 By the time the sun was set, the day of Ashura in the plains of Karbala, witnessed Imam Hussain (‘a) giving up everything humanly possible in the way of Allah including his companions and loyal followers and his 6 month beautiful baby, Ali Asghar. Islam is still alive and in her true shape because of Hussain (‘a) and his Sister Hazart Zainab (s.a). To be honest, Imam Hussain (‘a) left a remarkable impact over those who want to save humanity from various kinds of evil, aggression, injustice, slavery, state corruption, individual lusts and many more inhuman activities and serve it from the core of their heart. The French author victor Hugo said, “The principles of hussain’s (‘a) revolution became an approach to every rebel who wants to take his rights from his oppressors.”
🍂 Imam Hussain (‘a) and his family and companions gave their lives for the sake of preserving the true Islam. The sacrifice of Imam Hussain (‘a) will never be forgotten the blood spilled in Karbala will always be the spark in the heart of every free man to raise his voice against cruelty, to accentuate integrity and to prioritize humanity. Imam Hussain (‘a) is the inspiration for mankind to condemn all oppression and injustice. Hussain (‘a) is the one who launch an ultimate uprising for the sake of Truth and Justice. Imam Hussain (‘a) did what no other would do; he gave up his home, family, safety, own life and entire family for a message. What is this significant message that deserves the sacrifice of the head of one of the prophet dear grandsons? It is the message of humanity, peace, justice; the message of Islam and of Allah. It is the message that inspired all of humanity with divinity. Imam Hussain’s (‘a) revolution was aimed at saving the people from corruption, humiliation, mortification and ignorance.
Well known leaders/intellectuals praised Hazrat Imam Hussain (‘a) like;
The founder and supreme leader of Iran Imam Khomeini (r.a) says, “Imam Hussain (‘a) taught us all how to stand up and resist cruelty and the government of tyranny.”
Ayatollah Syed Ali Hosseini Khamenei says, “Imam Hussain’s (‘a) lessons are not only for Shias and Muslims but for justice seekers everywhere.”
Dr Sir Muhammad Iqbal (r.a), poet and philosopher of Pakistan says: “Imam Hussain (‘a) uprooted despotism forever till the Day of Resurrection. He watered the dry garden of freedom with the surging wave of his blood, and indeed he awakened the sleeping Muslim nation.”
Dr Radha Krishnan (Indian scholar and philosopher) says, “Though Imam Hussain (‘a) gave his life years ago, but his indestructible soul rules the hearts of people even today.”
Rabindranath Tagore wrote; “In order to keep alive justice and truth, instead of an army or weapons, success can be achieved by sacrificing lives, exactly what Imam Hussain (‘a) did.”
Hazrat Khwaja Mu inu d-Din Chishti says; Shah ast Hussain, Badshah ast Hussain (Ruler is Hussain, Emperor is Hussain)
Deen ast Hussain, Deen Panah ast Hussain (Faith is Hussain, guardian of faith is Hussain)
Sardad na dad dast, dar dast-e-yazid, (Offered his head and not the hand to Yazid)
Haqaa key binaey La ila ast Hussain (Indeed, Hussain is the foundation of La-ilah)
Ignaz Goldziher, a Hungarian scholar writes; “Karbala symbolizes the true face of struggle against injustice – non-violent resistance. Not taking life but sacrificing your life for Islam.”
Antoine Bara (Christian & Lebanese writer) writes: “If Hussain (‘a) was one of us, we would have put up a flag and a minaret for him in every part of the earth and called the people to Christianity! No battle in the modern and past history of mankind has earned more sympathy and admiration as well as provided more lessons than the martyrdom of Hussain (‘a) in the battle of Karbala.”
Swami Shankaracharya describes, “It is Hussain’s (‘a) sacrifice that has kept Islam alive or else in this world there would be no one left to take Islam’s name.”
Charles Dickens (English novelist) writes: “If Hussain (‘a) had fought to quench his worldly desires…then I do not understand why his sister, wife, and children accompanied him. It stands to reason therefore, that he sacrificed purely for Islam.”
Dear Readers, 13 centuries ago one man made the ultimate stand. He gave his life for dignity, equality and justice. He changed the course of history and inspired generations. That man was none but Hussain ibn Ali (‘a). In fact, Great spiritual leaders are known to make great sacrifices, but at Karbala, common men and women with infants at their bosom, their hearts and souls aflame with righteousness, chose death rather than evil and weakness. Such was the greatness of Imam Hussain (‘a); such was his spiritual power, which could uplift common mortals to heights of supreme courage and sacrifice. 72 men fought, not for money, not for land but for the future of Muslims to walk hand in hand. But, unfortunately Muslims of world are still unaware of the value of Sacrifice of Imam Hussain (‘a) and his companions. The time they will get awareness, surely regret the time of their life they have and will lost in not understanding and loving Hussain (‘a). Josh Malihabadi has rightly said, “Let Humanity awaken and every tribe will claim Hussain (‘a) as their own.”

chichawatni
Chichawatni city is the tehsil of sahiwal district and is located about 41 km from sahwail at multan bypass road. History of Chichawatni refers back to the British Raj. There are two references why this city is called Chichawatni.
First, this name was given by Maharaja Dahir. Secondly, a hindu family lived there whose names were Chicha (man) and Watni (his wife) name.
Nobody lives in present times who could exactly tell the reason of calling this city Chichawatni. chichawatni postal code is 57200 and chichawatni map shows it as a small city having a number of villages. Chichawatni to Multan distance is about 132.8 km and Harappa, a historical place, is about 23.9 km from Chichawatni. Lahore to Chichawatni travel is about 214 km and it takes 3 hours drive. Chichawatni weather is extremely hot in summer and usually it goes up to 46 degree centigrade. It’s big stations are Kassowal, Iqbal Nagar, Farid Nagar (90 Morr), Okanwala Bangla, Gaziabad and Harappa.
Chichawatni tehsil is famous for its second largest jungle (chichawatni forest) after Changa Manga. Chichawatni Jungle, (Chichawatni forest), was planted by the prisoners in 19th century. There used to be a central jail in Chichawatni near kotla adeeb shahid forest.
Rai Murtaza Iqbal is the present Chichawatni MNA and he belongs to Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI). He defeated his PMLN rivals Ch Tufail Jutt and Ch Hanif Jutt with the heavy lead of 26000 votes in chichawatni election 2018.
There are 3 provincial assembly constituencies in the city
PP200, PP201 and PP202. There is only one National assembly seat named NA-149 in Chichawatni. PMLN could only win one provincial seat in 2018 election from this city and that was in PP200.
Other renowned Chichawatni politicians are ch munir azhar prior mna, Ch Zahid Iqbal, Rai Hassan Nawaz, Ch Saeed Ahmad Gujjar, Malik Nauman Ahmad Langrial, Ch Arshad Jutt, Ali Javed, Rana Riaz Ahmad, Ch Waheed Asghar Dogar and Rai Azizullah.
In Chichawatni Rahmani, Rajput, Jatt , Arain , Butt, Sheikh , Malik , Ansari , Khokhar and other castes live with harmony.
Government Degree College Chichawatni was established in 1967 with the efforts of Sheikh Zaman, the father of Begum Shahnaz Javed.
Government M.C Model High School Chichawatni was established in 1916. DPS Chichawatni is the best private educational institure in Chichawatni. There are several other old institutions i.e. Punjab Group of Colleges, The Educators, Mission High School, Allama Iqbal College and the Dawn High School. Many Sikh temples are now working as primary and secondary schools in Chichawatni. Government Crescent College Chichawatni was also established with the efforts of Sheikh Zaman family and they paid for its land.
Chichawatni railway station was established in 1918. It was expanded with the passage of time. Especially in 2007 its new building was built.
There are some interesting historical references about Chichawatni. Its major colony Gaoshala was a grassland for the cows before the division of Hindustan. Gao means “the cow”. Shala is called to any place. So the Gaoshala means the place where the cows graze.
Halqa Arbab e Zauq Chichawatni is a famous literary society of Chichawatni which holds its meeting on every sunday atGovernment M.C Model High School Chichawatni.
Taj Mahal Chichawatni, greenland hotel chichawatni, Fresco Hotel Chichawatni and Gujjar hotel are its famous food points.
Chichawatni Buffalo Mandi (also known as Chichawatni Cattle mandi or Chichawatni cow mandi) is the second largest cattle market in Pakistan. Since 2014 it is given to the chichawatni cattle market management company. It is now become model mandi in gaushala chichawatni at chichawatni bypass.
For the latest chichawatni news you can visit four local websites. One is CHICHAWATNI NEWS in which you are reading this article. There is a documentary program in this website named Chichawatni Zero Km in which the history of chichawatni and its problems are covered
Secondly you can visit QLMDAN which is a political document of division Sahiwal.
Thirdly SAHIWAL NEWS is also getting good ranking for urdu news, sahiwal news, chichawatni news and Urdu columns.
There are a lot of historical buildings in Chichawatni. One of them is ‘Marri Building” which was the home of a Sikh family. Here is a complete documentary program about it. Other historical buildings will be soon included in this article.
Chichawatni local singers have a great talent but devoid of National level media attention. Listen a beautiful song by Muhammad Shabbir from Gaushala Chichawatni.
Chichawatni by election 2018 : Rai Murtaza Iqbal vacaned the MPA seat as he could only keep either MNA or MPA seat. So he decided to keep MNA seat and took oath.
His vacaned MPA seat in PP 201 became a battle field between two political families i.e Ch Tufail Jutt vs Samsam Bukhari.
Chichawatni by election held on Oct 14 and Syed Samsam Bukhari won the seat.
Tehsil Head Quarters Hospital Chichawatni is located near 45 Adda, Okanawala Road, Chichawatni. It’s old building is now TMA Chichawatni. It is upgraded yet lack of facilities and the staff is a comman complain.
A strange fact is that there used to be a brothel in the midst of thecity chichawatni punjab. Hindu and Sikh culture in chichawatni pakistan was replaced by the Muslims after the division of sub-continent.
Keep visiting this article as we’ll keep updating it with more and more information about Chichawatni.

MNAs including Sardar Riaz Mahmood Khan Mazari, Syed Faiz-ul- Hassan, Haji Imtiaz Ahmad Chaudhary and Bilal Asghar Warraich MPA, who called on Chief Minister Punjab Sardar Usman Buzdar at 90-SQA to discuss different matters, lambasted the demeaning remarks of former PM Shahid Khaqan Abbasi about National Assembly Speaker.
Talking on the occasion, the CM regretted that some opposition parties undemocratically behaved adding that respect of the House is binding on all. It is unbecoming for a former PM to utter such inappropriate commends, he maintained. The opposition went to any length to do negative politics over sensitive issue and made a condemnable attempt to muster support for reviving the dead politics. The CM emphasised that the government sensibly acted to resolve the matter and reiterated that Prime Minister Imran Khan has fully advocated the importance of respecting the Holy Prophet (PBUH) in the whole of the world and raised a strong voice at every fora. Karachiites face immense hardships as protests against Machh carnage continue Massive traffic jams were again observed in various parts of Karachi on Thursday as the Hazara community and Shia groups continued with their protest sit-ins and demonstrations at over 20 spots in the city to show solidarity with the Hazara families protesting the Machh tragedy in Quetta. Eleven miners of the Shia Hazara community were brutally killed before dawn on Sunday while they were asleep near a remote coal mine in the mountainous area of Machh in Balochistan. The Islamic State (IS) claimed the responsibility for the attack. As the bereaved families in Balochistan have not buried the bodies in protest and are demanding that the prime minister should pay a visit to them, Shia groups, including the Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM), the Shia Ulema Council, the Jafria Alliance, the Imamia Students Organisation and the Jaffaria Students Organisation, along with the Hazara community have been holding sit-ins on various roads of Karachi to express solidarity with the families. Protests are underway since yesterday at 20 locations in the city, according to a statement by the Karachi Traffic Police. These areas are Numaish, Kamran Chowrangi, Airport to Natha Khan, Shah Faisal Colony, Gulistan-e-Johar Morr to Johar Chowrangi and Safoora Chowrangi, Malir 15 to Quaidabad, Khuda Ki Basti, Surjani and Steel Town Chowrangi, Ibrahim Hyderi and Korangi, Nipa Bridge, Power House Chowrangi, Safari Park, Nazimabad’s Five Star Chowrangi, Gulberg, Ancholi, Azizabad IRC Imambargah, Nazimabad Board Office and Nazimabad Chowrangi 1. According to a traffic official, Rangers and police have also been deployed to assist the traffic police and ensure the law and order in these areas. However, traffic has been severely affected due to the protests and the commuters are being directed to take alternative routes. Civil society protests The Joint Action Committee (JAC), a joint platform of the civil society organisations, on Thursday staged a protest demonstration outside the Karachi Press Club against the killing of 11 Hazara mine workers in Machh. Carrying placards inscribed with demands to protect the lives of Hazaras, the participants called for an immediate arrest of the terrorists and demanded that the family of the victims be provided with over Rs1.5 million in compensation for each slain worker. Speaking on the occasion, JAC leaders Karamat Ali, Anis Haroon, Qazi Khizar and Saeed Baloch condemned the killings of the Shia Hazara workers in Balochistan. They described the prime minister’s attitude as stubborn for not visiting the bereaved families, who have staged a sit-in in Quetta and are not ready to bury the victims before the prime minister visits them. They condemned both the federal and Balochistan governments for “their failure to protect human lives in the province”. They said the FC had several checkpoints at every nook and corner, but despite that, the terrorists killed the workers and fled away easily. They called the terror activity a failure of the security agencies and the provincial government. Wahid Baloch, Dr Riaz Shaikh, Seema Maheswari, Paryal Marri, Habibuddin Junaidi, Zehra Akbar, Asghar Dashti and other activists also attended the protest. Later, some JAC leaders visited the main protest sit-in at Numaish Chowrangi in Karachi. ‘Protests to continue’ At the main sit-in camp set up by the MWM at Numaish Chowrangi, MWM leader Allama Baqir Abbas Zaidi said the peaceful sit-ins would continue across the country to show solidarity with the families of the Hazara community’s martyrs “until the heirs themselves announce the end of the sit-in and the burial of the bodies”. Leaders of various political parties, including Pakistan People Party’s provincial ministers Nasir Hussain Shah, Shehla Raza and Saeed Ghani, MQM-Pakistan’s leader Kishore Zahra, Pak Sarzameen’s leaders Shabir Qaim Khani and Dr Arshad Vehra, visited the camp to show solidarity with the Hazara community protesting in Quetta. In another sit-in, MWM leaders Bashul Ali Hussain Naqvi, Allama Dali Anwar Jafari, Allama Sadiq Jafari, Allama Mubashir Hassan and others spoke to the protesters. They asked the prime minister to visit the heirs of the martyrs and fulfil their demands. Call for operation Shia Ulema Council (SUC) leaders said terrorists had killed innocent labourers once again, posing a new challenge to the law enforcers. Addressing a press conference at the press club, SUC leaders Allama Muhammad Hussain Masoodi, Allama Syed Bair Hussain Zaidi, Allama Nasir Ahmed Qalandari and other Shia scholars said foreign forces were supporting the banned religious parties and effective action was necessary against them. “This is not the first attack on the Hazara tribe and the Shia community. Leaders of the banned parties openly issue fatwas for killings,” said Masoodi, demanding an operation against the proscribed outfits. “Anti-state elements are conspiring to divide our society on the basis of sect and religion, and this is the first step towards the collapse of the system,” he said. SUC leaders urged the national security institutions to take action not only against the banned outfits but also against those who were involved in spreading hatred and indoctrinating youths with hatred. ‘Vacate one passage’ Sindh Information and Local Government Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah has appealed to the protesters to vacate one passage of the blocked roads on humanitarian grounds to facilitate the movement of the emergency service vehicles, including ambulances, adds our correspondent. Speaking to media persons at the press club, he appealed to the religious scholars leading the protest sit-ins to vacate some passage of the blocked roads to facilitate the movement of patients through ambulances and to ensure oxygen supply to the hospitals in the city. He also appealed to the prime minister to go to Quetta to show sympathy with the bereaved families. Entry test cancelled Due to the blockage of main routes, the Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology postponed the entrance test for the undergraduate programme of Pharmacy-D. A day earlier, the varsity had circulated the test schedule. Later on, the varsity convened an emergency meeting in which it was decided to reschedule the test. The varsity will announce the new date for the test later. https://timespakistan.com/karachiites-face-immense-hardships-as-protests-against-machh-carnage-continue/7739/

Hadrat Sultan Bahoo (R.A.) Proposed Human Society
Hadrat Sultan Bahoo (May Allah Bless his Soul) fought against social and ethical evils and challenges of his era with his pen by writing about 140 books. In today’s society when the world has been transformed into a global village, humanity still faces similar kind of issues. In this paper, it is argued that guiding principles of Hadrat Sultan Bahoo (R.A) philosophy for human society stand on purification and reformation of individual on which the society of peace and love for humanity can be built. Union with Almighty by adopting Sufism, with the true spirit of the Holy Quran and Sunnah, and negating the desires of base self is the foundation for the purity of the individual. In current time, human savagery has reached alarming levels and intolerance has shaken very foundations of our social and religious values. In such circumstances, purity of heart and tolerance are the main cure by rejecting extreme rigidity of sectarian, ethnic, linguistic or other such divisions.
Discrimination among humans is the biggest obstacle for a just and peaceful society and according to the law of Allah (God), no one can discriminate anyone, which is the principle of Faqr (spiritual excellence) adopted by Faqir. Human society has to follow divine values otherwise, in the words of Bahoo, we will lose not only this world but the next world too. Tolerance, basic rights of human society, justice and equality were outlined by our Holy Prophet (Blessings and Salutations Be Upon Him) in the first place. Hadrat Sultan Bahoo has emphasized to have practical life instead of monasticism. The Muslim Ummah needs unity of hearts and belief rather than that of race or territory. All human beings are taken as equal members of the world/society. The Muslims have been instructed to act justly for every creature of the world what to speak of humanity alone.
Sultan-ul-Arifeen Hadrat Sakhi Sultan Bahoo(May Allah Bless his Soul) belonged to the age of seventeenth-century when social & ethical evils were prevailing and the condition of society than and now have disturbing similarities. In the Muslim world, communities and society both were in distress. In the global village perspective, the whole world has transformed into one Society (McLuhan, 1962). The term ‘Ummah’/millah, is interpreted as “Muslim Community”, living all over the world, without distinction, not confined to any particular region or nationalism. In the Holy Qurãn ‘Ummah’ is repeated 64 times for a people to whom a Prophet was bestowed by Allah (SWT). Hadrat Sultan Bahoo (May Allah Bless his Soul) fought against the societal ills with his pen. He thus raised slogans of following the teachings of Muhammad (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم Blessings and Salutations Be Upon Him), rejecting extreme rigidity of sectarianism as practiced by so-called theologians and misguided mystics (Sufis).
He was even not pleased with what the followers of ‘Imams’ said and did, as he has tested them on the touchstone of the Qurãn and the Hadith, constituting the basic principles of Islamic Society. A close study of the authorship of the Great Wali-Allah, Hadrat Sultan-ul-Arefeenرح (May Allah Bless his Soul) addresses the well-being of all mankind fully believing in Allah (SWT) as رب العالمین “Lord of the Worlds”. The Holy Qurãn nowhere particularizes Allah (SWT) with Muslims only, so is the case with the last and the Holy Chief of Prophets, Syed-ul-Ambiya Mohammad-e-Mustafa (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم Blessings and Salutations Be Upon Him) sent to humanity as defined in the Holy Qurãn وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ إِلَّا رَحْمَةً لِّلْعَالَمِينَ ("And We (Allah) have not sent thee (Muhammad) but as a mercy for both the worlds.", (Al-Quran 21:107) and therefore the love and teachings of Holiest Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم Blessings and Salutations Be Upon Him) is the fundamental principle of a just Islamic Society embedded in وحدانیت (Unity of Allah) and omnipotence of Allah (SWT) culminating into love for humanity irrespective of caste, creed, and religion. Hadrat Sultan Bahooرح (May Allah Bless his soul) has a strong belief that by recognizing self, human recognizes Allah (God) من عرف نفسہٗ فقدعرف ربہٗ and individuals.
In his proposed human society must have the following human values inculcated:
Hundred thousand sacrifice upon those Sufis who don’t utter awful thing Hoo.1 (Bahoo, 2010, p. 48)
Do not accompany treacherously and with slandering everyone you do not treat Hoo. (Bahoo, 2010, p. 71)
Your life is a few days establish worshiping or you will be regretful but Hoo. (Bahoo, 2010, p. 63)
The true path is of Mohammed ‘Bahoo’ upon which God is to achieve Hoo. (Bahoo, 2010, p. 16)
The article is based on these guiding values of Hadrat Sultan Bahooرح (May Allah Bless his Soul) for his proposed human society. “A society is a kind of a community (or a part of the community) whose members have become socially conscious of their mode of life, and are united by a common set of aims and values” (Ottaway, 1970, p. 3). Hadrat Sultan Bahooرح (May Allah Bless his Soul) as an author has stressed that members of a society should never disparate or should not make ill-mannered people as their friends which destroy the prestige of the whole family and advised to recoil the society on the basis of universal dignity, equality and equity, security, and justice on Earth according to the will of Allah (SWT), encompassing all human regardless of their ethnic origin assuring unity of the human family, fostering acquaintance among people and activating the divine values. Being a man of exceptional intellect and values embedded in Islamic society, a pluralistic one Hadrat Sultan Bahooرح, fought with his pen for an ideal society, as he was born to pious parents and linage.
Ancestors of Hadrat Sultan Bahooرح (May Allah Bless his Soul) migrated to this part of the world (Soon Valley) from Arabia after the death of Hadrat Imam Hassan and Hadrat Imam Hussain (May Allah Bless their Souls). Having fought and defeated the Hindus of Pind Dadan Khan and the districts around them, preached them to enter Islam by their virtues. The father of Hadrat Bahooرح [Bazidرح (ascendant of Prophet Mohammad (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ و سلم Blessings and Salutations Be Upon Him) belonged to the Awan tribe], was a Hafiz-ul-Qurãn and a distinguished scholar of his time, migrated to Jhang district.
He was a person of quiet disposition and so was his spouse, the mother of Hadrat Bahooرح (Hadrat Bibi Rasti R.A). His family was held in great regard by the Emperor Shah Jahan who conferred on his father, Sultan Bazidرح, Kahar Janan in jagir. Hadrat Sultan Bahooرح (May Allah Bless his soul) was born in 1629 AD (1039 Hijri). Legends relating to his childhood are numerous and of a varied nature. One of them is so interesting that we cannot help relating it here. It runs thus: When Hadrat Bahooرح was a boy, he was such a devout Mussulman that a sort of radiance spread around his face, and whenever a Hindu witnessed it, he was so impressed by it, that forgetting all, he renounced his religion and became a Mussulman. This miracle wrought exclusively by his radiance frightened the Hindus, who sent a delegation to wait upon his father and request him to keep his son Bahooرح indoors, except certain hours. Thus request was complied with, and the young boy thereafter had to remain indoors (Krishna, 1938, p. 49). Witnessing that Heرح was a kind of force, which changes the minds of humanity to the righteousness, brotherhood, tranquility, peace, and course of history and society. To these causes, he contributed 140 books in Persian and Punjabi, which for the most part have been out of the reach of the general public and humanity. Acknowledging efforts of (besides many others), to the International Tanzeem-ul-Arifeen and its founder Hadrat Sultan Muhammad Asghar Ali Sarwari Qadriرح (may Allah bless his soul) who took the initiative to get the books collected and print them with translation for the Urdu knowing people. However, in English, there were not many translations. Praise to the ‘Sahibzadagan’ of Hadrat Sultan Muhammad Asghar Aliرح (14.8.1947 - 26.12.2003) namely; Hadrat Sultan Mohammad Ali, Sultan Ahmad Ali and Sultan Bahdar Aziz, who despite many difficulties continued the efforts of their great father and ancestors and along with maintaining the International Tanzeem-ul-Arifeen established an Institute ‘Mission of Unity, Stability, and Leadership In Muslims (MUSLIM)’ with the aim to promote research and dialogue in the Muslim World for addressing its concerns and finding practical solutions to the problems.

WOMEN MPAs CALL ON CM PUNJAB
LAHORE, January 29:
Women MPAs including Momina Waheed, Aasia Amjad, Ayesha Nawaz and Shaheena Karim Khosa called on Chief Minister Punjab Sardar Usman Buzdar to discuss different issues. The MPAs appreciated that the CM strives to solve the problems while giving respect and honour to the assembly members. A chief minister like you is a pride for us; they said and added that Usman Buzdar is moving the province forward with hard work while backward areas' development is given full attention.
The CM assured that women parliamentarians will be given their due rights adding that their role, in the solution of public problems, cannot be underrated. Women will be given respect and honour and protection in the new Pakistan led by PM Imran Khan, he repeated. The problems relating to your areas have been noted down and issues will be resolved on a priority basis, he continued. The government is burning the midnight oil to change the destiny of the people and the proposals of women assembly members will be given due importance, he assured.
The CM regretted that assembly members were badly ignored in past tenures as the previous government did not give any importance to assembly than a rubber stamp. The PTI government, on the other side, has taken several steps to provide socio-economic empowerment to the womenfolk, he said. It has also strived to end gender discrimination because no society can move forward without the practical participation of its womenfolk in the development process. Daycare centres have been established in government and private institutions to facilitate the working women, concluded the CM.
Chief Whip Syed Abbas Ali Shah was also present.

Those who practised politics for corruption are, now, trying to portray themselves as victims. GOAL OF COMPOSITE DEVELOPMENT WILL BE ACHIEVED UNDER PM IMRAN KHAN: CM
LAHORE, January 29:
The fertile land of Sahiwal has, rapidly, emerged as the administrative and trade hub as it has a strong potential of agro-based industries.
This was stated by Chief Minister Punjab Sardar Usman Buzdar while addressing a ceremony held to start mega development projects in Sahiwal on Friday.
Giving the details of development work, the CM said that peripheral areas of Harappa and Chichawatni will also enjoy the fruits of development as a two billion rupees package has been announced for each area. The development package includes numerous projects of water supply, underpass and roads' construction, wildlife park, tehsil sports complex, grounds, sewerage and provision of health and educational facilities, he added. Sahiwal has become a focus of attention of PTI as I have conducted more than five visits to this city to hold meetings with people from a cross-section of society. My team is working to implement feasible recommendations, the CM added.
The chief minister emphasized that cities are being transformed to enjoy modern facilities adding that provision of modern municipal services is being started in Sahiwal with a cost of Rs 18 billion under Punjab Intermediate Cities Improvement Investment Program. Government has also saved a sum of 11 crore rupees through open international tendering, he added. Sahiwal and Sialkot will emerge as engines of growth as a waste management academy and waste segregation plant have been inaugurated in Sahiwal along with the start of Ehsaas Program, Hunarmand Nojawan Program and Punjab Rozgar Scheme. Meanwhile, it has also been planned to provide the best municipal services in seven other cities, he disclosed. The foundation stone of 120-bed Sahiwal institute of cardiology has been laid along with upgradation of a teaching hospital. Along with it, a universal healthcare program is going to be started as well to give free treatment facilities to 12 crore people of the province, added Usman Buzdar.
The CM termed the incumbent government as farmer-friendly which started to devise agricultural policy way back in 2019 and informed that important agricultural projects have been started during the last two years with an amount of 90.70 billion rupees. Regrettably, Sahiwal is called the hub of livestock but nobody gave a damn to devising provincial livestock policy, he maintained. The credit goes to the incumbent government to prepare and launch the first livestock policy of the province before the upcoming budget. The government will also maintain liaison with the parliamentarians and other stakeholders for completion of development projects and the goal of composite development will be achieved under the leadership of PM Imran Khan, concluded the CM.

HANDOUT (A)
OPPOSITION WILL WITNESS MANY SURPRISES BY PTI LEADERSHIP: SACM
LAHORE, January 29:
Special Assistant to CM on Information Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan has said the opposition is licking its wounds after facing defeat at every front. It will witness many more surprises by the PTI leadership.
In a statement, she said the tall claim of rendering resignations has turned out to be a political burden for the PDM. The ranting of the bondmaids shows the PDM drama has ended in a fiasco. The bondmaids should remember that the party has just started as the trio of Maulana and the two scions have reverted to square one, she said. They do not have anything to defend as the people have fully recognized the duality of the political plunderers. Meanwhile, the scope of practical work done by CM Usman Buzdar is greater than the overall achievements of the political thieves, concluded the SACM.

As one born in the Sunni tradition, I regretted not knowing much about Shi’ism. Not much, if not at all, was taught about the Shi’a tradition in my early religious instruction. This blind spot – of assuming that there is only one Islam: the Sunni version – has a consequence later on. I grew up in a period of rampant “Salafization” of Islamic discourse. Much was happening in the 1980s, brought about by the changing geopolitical landscape particularly after the Iranian Revolution and the counter-ideology led by Saudi Arabia. Given the absence of any religious instruction on Shi’ism within the Muslim tradition, it was easy for anti-Shi’a ideas to be sowed. While I was not anti-Shi’a, I had apprehensions about this branch within Islam: it can appear to be alien and even weird when compared to “mainstream” Islam.
It was not until my exposure to Islamic history and philosophy that led me to a new perspective on the evolving aspects of Islam, its deeply diverse nature, and the competing ideas of what we often essentialized as “tradition”. Shi’ism, like the emergence of other early theological movements (e.g. the Jabariyah, Qadariyah, Mu’tazila, etc) was born out of the sociopolitical context of a leadership crisis after the death of Prophet Muhammad. Knowing this aspect of history would banish any notion of “the perfect past”.
Demythologising history
It was my first lesson in the demythologising aspect of history. Two works had been deeply influential for me: Fazlur Rahman’s Methodology in Islamic History, and Majid Fakhry’s A History of Islamic Philosophy. Prior to this, and from my religious instruction, I had been taught Muslim history through an ideological and partisan lens of Sunni triumphalism that was firmed up and consolidated some three centuries after Islam’s emergence in Arabia. It was a time, as Fazlur Rahman contended when the term “Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama’ah” (People of the Prophetic Practices and of the Majority, or “Sunni” in short) became current. It was the orthodoxy that I learnt, not the formation of orthodoxy. This distinction is critical.
In much of my early religious instruction, the history of Islam was presented as a “glorious period”. The period of the Khulafa’ ar-Rasyidun (the Four Rightly Guided Caliphs – comprising, of Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman and ‘Ali – was idealised as the “Golden Period”, otherwise known in Sunni version of history as the period of the “Salafussoleh” or the pious first three generation of the Prophet, his Companions and the companions of the Companions. Perhaps, it was the influence of Islamic modernism that emerged in the late 19th century that led to this particular worldview. There was a need then to make sense of the sorry state of the Muslim world under colonisation, hence, what the Muslims were experiencing was a degeneration of history. History was, according to this view, perfected during the time of the Prophet, and then it deteriorates. Modernists want to restore this glory.
Therefore, returning to the “Golden Period” is necessary. All solutions to the present problems lie in the past. And with the emergence of Islamism (a politicised form of Islam), the past was not just perfect; it was fossilised into forms that must be implemented in the present. The idea of “Syariah Law” (as understood by Islamists) is one example. I grew up into this worldview with the expansion of Islamism within the Malay world. It was known as the “dakwah movement”. In short, Islam became a political ideology.
As an ideology, complexities, contradictions and ambiguities were often shunned. The very idea of “Islam” must be made as a rallying call to mobilise Muslims. It also became a political identity. As an identity, there was a need to define Islam against what it is not. Just like politics, there were allies and enemies. The latter can be external or internal. While the external threat to Islam was made obvious (secularism, the Jews and Christians, and the all-encompassing “West”), the internal was amorphous, and hence, more dangerous. They were, I often heard, “bagai gunting di balik lipatan” (like scissors in the cloth’s folding), a Malay idiom to signify an unseen and dangerous threat that can stab you unknowingly – and Shi’as happened to be one of them!
Understanding divisions within Islam
Moving back to the idea of the Khulafa’ ar-Rasyidun, I came to realise later, that out of these four caliphs, three were murdered. In addition, the first major split in the early Muslim period occurred during this period when the Battle of Siffin that took place in 657 CE during the rule of Caliph ‘Ali. It gave rise to the proto-Shi’as (known as the Party of ‘Ali), as well as the first major extremist theological school within Islam known as the Khawarij or ‘those who left’. The seeds of the division had, however, occurred much earlier during the controversial rule of the third caliph, Uthman. So much for the “Golden Age”! One key text that was introduced to me, via the late Professor Syed Hussein Alatas, was Fitna al-Kubra (The Great Dissension) by the 19th-century Egyptian thinker, Taha Husayn. My overtures into early Islamic history would never be the same again.
It was my study into the divisions within early Islam that sets my appreciation for the diversity within Islam. My training in philosophy and my exposure to sociological thinking led me to identify the emergence of sects and schools of thought within Islam as located primarily in the social, economic and political context of the historical period in question. In short, I became less dogmatic about my own understanding of Islam. My own adherence to a particular form of Islam – the Sunni and Shafi’i form, as prevalent in the Malay world – was historically and sociologically conditioned, so had I been born elsewhere and in a different period of history, I might be a Muslim in a totally different way. More importantly, I do not get to choose where I would be born.
It is not unthinkable that I might be a Shi’a should I be born in Iran today, or probably a Mu’tazilite had I been born in the 9th century Baghdad at the height of the Abbasid rule. So, I questioned myself: why should I be insistent on a sectarian approach to Islam by upholding that only my Islam is correct while all other ways of knowing and relating to Islam is wrong? Am I – I asked myself one day – worshipping God or worshipping my own interpretation of God’s religion?
Slowly, I began to see Islam more as a manifestation of the divine mercy in the ebbs and flow of history, through different forms and expressions – all pointing to the One. My responsibility is to understand and make sense, to the best of my ability, of this deep diversity within Islam, and if it is a manifestation of divine mercy and wisdom, I must embrace and be at ease with it. After all, as the adage goes, differences of opinion within the community is a blessing (ikhtilaf ummati rahmah).
Shi’ism and the Malays
Apart from historical and philosophical studies, I was also a student of Malay literature. This was another window into which I began to discover Shi’i thought. In fact, I found it to be a historical betrayal to deny the role that Shi’as had played in the Southeast Asian region. One of the earliest surviving classical Malay texts was the 16th-century Hikayat Muhammad Hanafiyyah, a tale that described the murder of ‘Ali and the subsequent martyrdom of Husayn by the forces of Yazid in Karbala. Early Shi’a presence in the Malay world could also be seen through archaeological and linguistic records, some of which were discussed in two recent edited works: Chiara Formichi and Michael Feener’s Shi’ism in South East Asia, and Dicky Sofyan’s Sejarah dan Budaya Syiah di Asia Tenggara. [History and Culture of the Shi’as in Southeast Asia]
But while Shi’a presence was established in early Malay records, I had not been introduced properly to Malay Shi’as until 2009. I had, of course, interacted with scholars from Shi’a background, including the likes of Dr. Asghar Ali Engineer and Professor Abdulaziz Sachedina. I had also enjoyed readings works by Shi’a scholars and thinkers, such as Ali Shariati, Abdolkarim Soroush and Muhammad Husayn Tabataba’i. I was also exposed to the works of a progressive Indonesian Shi’a thinker, Jalaluddin Rakhmat.
In 2009, I had the opportunity to accompany Professor Sachedina (who was a guest of the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore) to the Jaafri Muslim Association (JMA), a local Shi’a organisation. While my contact then was primarily Shi’as of South Asian origin (they came to Singapore as merchants during the colonial period), it was in JMA that I encountered Malay Shi’as. These were Malays who became Shi’as after the Iranian Revolution. I had heard about their existence, but it was the first time that I met and even talked to one. Nothing extraordinary happened, of course, but my fear towards the Shi’as was reduced, and it was my first step towards encountering the Other – a Malay Shi’a. Essentially, it was a huge moment for me.
Two years later, I accepted a friend’s invitation to an Asyura (10th of Muharram) commemoration that was organised by a Malay Shi’ia organisation, Himpunan Belia Islam (Muslim Youth Assembly/HBI), which was held at the annexe building of the Sultan Mosque. The event was attended, mostly by Shi’a youths, but featured a dialogue segment between Ustaz Rosli from the Shi’a community and Professor Syed Farid Alatas from the Sunni. It was my first Sunni-Shi’a dialogue in Singapore, and I found the atmosphere respectful and the session informative.
To me, Asyura has always been about the religious ritual of fasting and partaking in a special Malay porridge known as bubur Asyura – but it dawned on me for the first time that something violent and tragic had occurred on this day of Asyura: an event that was never spoken of nor discussed by Muslims in general. It was as if the incident was too painful to be remembered; or willfully neglected to deny any form of responsibility on the part of the triumphant Umayyads (accepted as a legitimate caliphate by the Sunnis) for the killing of the Prophet’s grandson and a massacre of some 70 of his followers, including women and young children, in Karbala. My interest in this incident grew, and I would never again view Asyura in the same light. It was a period of mourning, not celebration.
Friendship with Shi’as
Ever since then, I began to meet more local Shi’as and developed friendship ties amongst a few. To me, Shi’as are no longer ‘the Other’ – objects of distant gazing and suspicion. Knowing a Shi’a at a personal level dispelled any misconception I once had. I was able to learn about Shi’ism from a first-hand source, and this is what we need in order to overcome the prejudice and misinformation that circulates among many Sunni Muslims in Singapore. Sadly, the local religious fraternity had a lot to do with this prejudice and misinformation.
It was just early this year that I overheard two members of a local Islamic institution discussing Shi’ism in a typically misinformed manner. One was making a remark about how Shi’as include the mention of ‘Ali’s name in the syahadah or declaration of faith, and another was making a statement about how the Shi’as have a different Qur’an. The latter was definitely untrue: Shi’as hold on to the same Qur’an as other Muslims. Regarding the syahadah, while it is true, the additional line is “Aliyun Waliyullah wasiyur Rasulullah” (‘Ali is the Wali/Friend of Allah and Successor to the Prophet) and reflect the oath of allegiance to ‘Ali and the Ahlul Bayt (Family of the Prophet); nothing more. Most Shi’a clerics would say that this additional line is not mandatory. If we were to understand the historical context of Shi’ism, we will understand why this additional line exists. There is nothing heretical about this.
Normalising difference
It is important to note that a meaningful encounter with a difference is, in itself, an important element in the development of an open and charitable embrace of the Other. My own experience had taught me to engage with difference, not to push it into hiding. The normalising difference is the only way that we can cultivate an embrace of diversity. Suppressing expressions of difference will only create an illusion of harmony where, in fact, we are merely imposing the dominant and majoritarian privilege while implicitly forcing the minority to conform to the dominant and the majority. This is where any expression of difference in public will be seen as destabilising.
I soon developed a realisation that it is the majority Sunnis who must extend the charitable hand to embrace the minority Shi’as amongst us. As the majority, we must ensure that the rights of our minority Shi’a brothers and sisters be protected; that they feel safe and not discriminated; and that they can be who they are without fear nor reprisals as equal citizens, and as fellow Muslims like us. But first, we must work towards building a bridge for Sunnis and Shi’as to interact within safe spaces. On this aspect, the formation of the MCollective in 2016 – a network of Singapore Muslim youths interested in bridging intra-faith relations – is a promising start. The network began by organising intrafaith iftar (breaking of fast meal) during Ramadan. It also organised forums where Muslim youths from different Muslim traditions gathered to deepen their understanding of each other’s perspectives and practices. I had my first experience of praying side-by-side a Shi’a brother, during one of the sessions. I felt at ease. We were facing the same qiblah.
Removing fear
One additional aspect is worth pointing out: the tendency to exoticise and peddle fear on what we are ignorant about. A year ago, a video was circulating, showing an Asyura commemoration in Singapore with local Shi’a youths reciting praises for ‘Ali while slapping their chest. It was deemed controversial and became an online viral, purportedly as “proof” of the Shi’as’ “deviant” practice. The reactions of the Sunnis were telling of their ignorance of why the Shi’as do this ritual and the historical amnesia of what actually happened in Karbala. It is like how some non-Muslims had developed an irrational fear of the wearing of the headscarf or the use of certain Arabic expressions in daily interactions. Such fear can be overcome if more informed voices can come out publicly to educate and counter the fearmongering by anti-Shi’a voices. But where should these informed voices come from? Why are they not forthcoming? And what can be done to cultivate and empower such voices?
I believe that there are reasonable people in the local Muslim community who need the right signals from people of authority. A few months ago, reports emerged about a Singaporean who wanted to travel to Syria to kill Shi’as who were considered as “deviants”. This is a worrying sign that anti-Shi’a rhetoric has reached a critical stage where some are driven to engage in violence. It is time that we acknowledge how dangerous sectarianism can be in the context of a deeply diverse society like Singapore. More importantly, we must recognise this diversity within the Muslim community itself and stop pretending that we are all identical, a monolithic Muslim community. If diversity is natural, we should educate people to be at ease with it; not to force everyone into a single mold and generate fear and prejudices towards those who belong to a different tradition or who subscribed to different ways of being a Muslim in today’s world.
Normalising this diversity is, therefore, crucial – along with the removal of fear and the building of bridges for deeper understanding. The more we suppress expressions of this diversity, the more we perpetuate prejudices and ignorance. We have learnt this lesson in inter-religious relations. Today, we are actively promoting interfaith work as a way to normalise differences in faith and to promote meaningful interactions and deeper understanding across the various religions. It is time we do the same for intrafaith relations, particularly within Islam.
Taking a stand for diversity
I am fortunate that I found a new way of relating to the diversity within Islam. It began with a historical consciousness that led to a shift in perspective. Through further active interactions with the Shi’as themselves and friendship ties that developed thereon, misconceptions were dispelled and my prejudices disappeared. For me, it boils down to one important lesson: we need to actively confront the problem of dehumanisation of those who are different from us. In this process, we will learn a little bit more about our own blind spots while we search for our common humanity in and through others.
Today, I will not stay silent when an untruth is spoken against Shi’ism in general. That is the very least that I can do as a fellow Muslim who acknowledges his Shi’a brothers and sisters as belonging to the same ummah. Sectarianism has no place in Singapore, nor anywhere in the world, and I hope more voices will emerge to provide guidance for a new generation of Muslim youths who are trying to make sense of diversity, while remaining vigilant of the rise of extremist discourses that are divisive and promoting a supremacist, exclusivist and monolithic version of Islam.
