Fanfiction updates and excerpts 12.07.24
Hello! I thought I’d try to test out shorter but more frequent updates re: my upcoming fics. We'll see if I can keep it up. (Also I got some awesome fanart recently, links are right here). In the upcoming weeks there are 4 works incoming, one of which I accidentally uploaded a bit too early while editing it on my phone very late at night, but it was almost finished anyway lolol.
Last year our celebrations were hectic, so we're taking it chill this year. I'm going to play Silent Hill 2 Remastered, which I've been looking forward to the point where the OST was at the top of my Spotify Wrapped. I hope everyone will have a nice December, this month can be brutal for some, so sending good vibes to you all.
Fanfic list and excerpts after the cut. As always, beware of dark themes and explicit content, which are present in all the works.
All Those Pretty Little Horses (Mouthwashing, centipede!Polle/Jimmy/Anya, dead dove: do not eat, psychosexual horror fic with noncon and xeno elements)
You yell as you're nearly trampled to death, the pressure intense on your legs and along your spine and inside your skull. Inside your skull, your eyeballs tremble, and inside your eyeballs, the vitreous humor sloshes around like mouthwash in a bottle, a ship in a bottle, an impossible but useless construction as a symbol of luck, which you're all out of, thanks to that bastard who crashed -
BE QUIET, the creature tells you in a foreboding rumble as it wraps around you, engulfing all of your thoughts except one: among the plastic, the demon smells of rot. The larger ones of its legs fasten your body to its own. It feels like being strapped to an eldritch roller-coaster. The smaller legs work at your back like reverse sewing needles, shredding the back of your sweaty jumpsuit and t-shirt and boxers. Even smaller legs act like needles, sinking into each pore as if to pump you full of pacifying company slogans.
Drawing panicked breaths, you keep struggling, but you are held tight, the massive body curling into yours like you're its prey.
.
Sycamore Trees (RDR, Dutch/Arthur and implied/referenced Arthur/John, pre-canon, PWP, dubious consent!), commissioned by the lovely Cokobi
A memory: the third time they did this, with Arthur underneath Dutch's desk and between his legs, eyes wide and mouth full of Dutch's cock. On the other side of the desk there was the familiar voice of John, who had randomly walked into the office to ask about some job. Dutch talked evenly to him as if Arthur wasn't hidden between his legs. He wasn't choking him, he very rarely did, but he did not let him pull back before John left the room. It was only afterwards that Arthur realized that it might've been planned.
Dutch said it wasn't, but he also said, "I heard about Susan catching you two in that barn. Does John even know how to kiss properly? Worry not, we can kiss some more, so you can teach him in turn."
.
Moonshine, Milk, Coffee Liqueur part 2/2 (RDR, Dutch/Arthur/Micah, dubcon 3some PWP)
"I'll do my best for you, boss," Micah said after a few moments. "But massages ain't my strong suit. Fuck and run is more my style. Uh, when I was younger, I mean."
"If you run," Dutch began, voice foreboding but also satisfied at its own words, "I will find you, Micah."
A dark chuckle with sighs among its ending, almost wistful.
"I'd let you, Dutch."
Christ, they were flirting again, in that weird and dramatic fashion of theirs, with Micah still lodged inside Arthur. Arthur snorted in disgust. He would have told them to get a room, hadn't it been for Micah's cock acting like a lock, stretching him even more open as Micah moved his hips in circles, clearly enjoying Dutch's attention. He stilled when the attention was turned towards Arthur instead.
"Let's not neglect the star of the show." Dutch nodded at him, then looked at Micah with a sly quirk of his lips underneath his moustache.
"Try to give his ass some attention. The boy really likes that."
.
Slug part 5/5 (RDR, Colm/Micah, biker gang AU-AU, dead dove: do not eat, psychological horror noncon smut with fake aftercare)
"The shirt, now," Colm mumbles. "Put your arms up."
It is one of the strangest moments in Micah's life, being dressed by another man. He's never experienced it before. Maybe as a young child, but his memories from that time are blurred. As the shirt blocks out his vision, he panics, but he doesn't have the strength to fight back. He sighs in relief as the room returns as his head comes back out of shirt, because he'd expected to vanish into the grayness.
"A little big, but it suits you. Makes your eyes look pale like a corpse's."
Micah flinches as Colm touches his eyelashes, the gentlest touch he's felt in hours, maybe years. He doesn't know why it's so soothing. Colm looks away, breaking the moment, nostrils twitching.
"It really smells nasty in here. Let's get through that door, yeah?"
"The d-door?" Micah stammers, immediately looking towards it. It's closed, just like it was in the beginning, before they wanted to watch. The last time he saw it, the doorway was full of O'Driscolls, smoking and laughing and eating pizza, egging on the men who ...
"You scared? Don't be. Like I said, just do as I say."
.
Thanks for following my works!

Burning Hearts: Chapter Fifteen
(AO3 counterpart here.)
Greystripe and Ravenwing did not speak to each other for the next several days. Fireheart had to juggle his interactions with them, keeping Ravenwing company for half the night and then chatting with awkward, unstable cheeriness with Greystripe when he returned home. Fireheart worked valiantly under the (perhaps not entirely unfounded) paranoid worry that every single eye in ThunderClan was on him and his friends, watching with curiosity as Greystripe and Ravenwing gave each other a wide berth and slept on opposite ends of the warriors’ den. No one said anything, but their puzzlement was palpable.
It got to the point that one night, Bluestar called Fireheart into her den to speak privately. When they were alone, she said, Your friends are troubled by something, it’s very obvious. What happened between them?”
Fireheart fought not to squirm as he tried to find a way to not rat Greystripe out while telling the truth. “Well, um, they had a big argument over… over RiverClan.”
Bluestar blinked, then narrowed her thoughtful eyes. “Ravenwing doesn’t agree with sending them prey, I assume.”
“He doesn’t.” Fireheart sighed and bowed his head. “The fight got really personal, so they’re just not talking.”
Bluestar’s voice, unusually gentle, made him look up again. “I know this is upsetting for you. Don’t blame yourself for it, and don’t try to fix it for them. They can talk when they’re ready. If it gets worse, I will speak to them. Don’t make this your task, no matter how close you are with them.”
Fireheart nodded as his mentor’s words pulled a bit of a stony weight off his back. He took a moment to properly absorb them, keep them in the back of his mind to remind him where his position was in this painful situation. He privately pleaded to StarClan for it to resolve itself before Bluestar stepped in.
It didn’t quite improve as the month went on. Greystripe at least had the decency to look guilty when Ravenwing hurried past him or avoided eye contact, but he made no effort to apologize or even greet him with a single word. Ravenwing’s anxiety kept him from saying anything himself. Fireheart supposed he ought to say something, but…
“Fireheart?”
He looked to his left as he stepped out of camp to see an uncharacteristically nervous Greystripe trotting towards him.
“Hey, there you are,” Greystripe said hurriedly, his attempt to sound casual as sturdy as a dead leaf. “I was going to ask, uh– do you want to hunt? Just ThunderClan prey tonight, RiverClan’s doing fine.”
Fireheart swiveled an ear to make sure they were alone before leaning his head forward and whispering, “Silverstream’s busy, isn’t she?”
“Wh– no, no—” Greystripe stood straight with a violent jerk upright. “I just– I can hunt with my friend, can’t I?”
Fireheart gave him a look.
Greystripe sighed. “She told me to stay away for a bit to let our scents fade.”
“Thank you for being honest.” Fireheart walked past him, tapping his chest with his tail. “Come on, it’s been a while. Tigerclaw said to hunt near the Sycamore for a bit.”
Greystripe stuttered out some gratitudes before following after him.
The Sycamore was rather close to camp—only a short walk in the opposite direction of the camp entrance. When they reached it, Fireheart gazed up as far back as he could tilt his head, marveling silently at its height. Most of its leaves had fallen off, leaving the pale branches to scratch at the sky with long, crooked claws. The very top of the tree reminded Fireheart of a human’s hand, its stretched toes straining to catch a star.
“If this place has the most sacred cats buried here,” he asked Greystripe, “does it feel a little weird to you to hunt prey around this tree?”
Greystripe snorted. “It’s not like the prey has the souls of these cats, Fireheart. If anything, they’d encourage us to catch them.”
“I hope so.” Fireheart looked around, sniffing.
Mouse. Somewhere close by. He lowered his body into a half-crouch and took a few steps to his right, testing the direction of the scent-trail.
“Uh—” Greystripe cleared his throat. “Actually, hold on a moment.”
Fireheart blinked and stood up straight. “What’s up?”
It was interesting, how much a stone-colored tower of stark stripes and long fur could emulate a tiny kit about to be scolded by his parents. His head turned back and forth anxiously as his front feet kneaded the ground like he wanted to run and was trying to sate his paws by stepping in place. Even his broad, hard-cheeked face was weirdly youthful, his eyes big and darting side-to-side, as if seeking an exit. Fireheart waited patiently until he spoke.
“Listen,” Greystripe started unsteadily. “About Silverstream, and Ravenwing—”
He stopped, like he was expecting an interruption. Fireheart didn’t give him one; he just stood and looked up at his friend, head slightly tilted.
Greystripe worked his jaw and then continued. “It’s messed up, I know. I should talk to Ravenwing.“
“You should apologize to him,” Fireheart said, faintly surprised by the edge in his voice.
“I know… but—”
Fireheart didn’t hesitate to cut him off this time, and he didn’t bother to hide his stern anger. “There is no ‘but’. You said some incredibly cruel things. You already know how sensitive he is, and you did it anyway just to get him to go away.”
Greystripe almost looked grateful for the chance to go on the defensive. “Hey, he was yelling at me for something I can’t help!” His voice muted a little. “You don’t know what Silverstream means to me. You’ve never been in this situation before, you wouldn’t get it.”
Fireheart’s chest suddenly blazed with frustration, and for once, he was having a hard time controlling it. He focused his eyes skyward, away from Greystripe, and inhaled a deep, calming breath, forcibly blowing the fire out. Unfortunately, that frustration had a few sparks left, and they latched onto his next words.
“Honestly, Greystripe?” he said, almost too conversationally for the heat coming out of his mouth. “I don’t know if I care.”
Greystripe stared at him, his expression between outraged and shocked.
“Maybe I haven’t felt love like that, and maybe I never will…” Fireheart met his eyes and focused hard on not blinking. “But you know, I don’t think I’d let that change how I talk to my friends. To cats that are just looking out for me and making sure I don’t make a mistake.”
Greystripe bristled. “She is not a mistake!”
“You breaking the law is,” Fireheart said coolly.
“Since when did you care about the code?” Greystripe snapped. “You know how often you got in trouble as an apprentice? How you helped me with RiverClan before Bluestar allowed it?”
Fireheart blinked slowly, passive-aggressive in its friendliness. “At the very least, I would say my decisions led to cats being saved.”
“Ohhh, big savior, you,” Greystripe said sarcastically. “Well, my decisions have led to me being happy. I’m just hanging out with someone I care about. I’m not talking with stupid kittypets and refusing to fight to protect my Clan.”
Fireheart twitched his whiskers in grim amusement. “You know, when you immediately jump to being hurtful to get someone to leave you alone, that says something about the validity of your argument.”
Greystripe opened his mouth, but nothing came out. Fireheart cocked his head, a half-challenge that Greystripe didn’t meet. Instead, he just turned and stalked away, disappearing into the underbrush in a very similar fashion to Ravenwing, albeit much noisier.
Fireheart sighed deeply, trying to shoo all the tension and anger out of his body. It left him trembling a little. He waited until he was a bit steadier before walking back for camp, his hunting trip forgotten. The walk was longer, his feet slow and a little wobbly. He didn’t bother catching anything.
He re-entered camp, only for a squeal to make him jump. Before he could look, a weight barreled into him, making him stumble to the side. His alarm passed as soon as he got a look at his assailant: a fluffy dark golden-brown kitten with dark blue eyes that was frowning at him.
“You were s’posed to fall over,” the little tom said.
Fireheart purred. “I’m sorry. You can tackle me again, if you like.”
“You will do no such thing.” Frostfur approached and extended a graceful paw to pull the kitten back. “It’s rude to attack your Clanmates.”
Fireheart blinked, the brightened up considerably, standing straighter. “Oh! Are all your kits out now?”
“They are.” Frostfur swept with her long tail, gesturing to a cluster of various shades of gold and white wrestling in a pile. “I’m sure you’d like to meet them.”
“I would!” Fireheart beamed, then looked at Frostfur nervously. “They’re safe outside now, right?”
To his surprise, Frostfur’s eyes were bright with amusement. “Yes, they’re safe. This one is Thornkit.”
“H’lo,” Thornkit said, his thin tail wagging. He puffed out his white chest.
Fireheart dipped his head to the little tom. “Hello. I’m Fireheart.”
Thornkit blinked owlishly. He looked up at his much taller mother. “Can I go play?”
Frostfur lifted her long, feathery-furred leg. “Be nice to your Clanmates.”
Thornkit didn’t bother to respond, just waddle-ran at the now splitting pile of kittens. Fireheart could pick them out separately; one was a lighter golden-brown than Thornkit, but with white feet and a tail-tip, another was white all over, and the last was vibrantly patched with white and a gingery-gold.
“Who are the rest?” Fireheart asked Frostfur.
Frostfur pointed to each one separately. “The lighter tom is Brackenkit, the white one is Snowkit, and their sister is Brightkit.”
A trill escaped Fireheart’s throat. “They’re all adorable.”
“They better be,” Frostfur said, with a rare warmth. “That’s the only way they can get away with being little beasts when I’m trying to sleep.”
Fireheart chuffed. He didn’t comment aloud, but aside from color, Thornkit looked every bit like his father. Even Snowkit, who was smaller than the others, had Lionface’s mane already growing out.
That reminded him.
“So…” He looked up at Frostfur again. “Did Snowkit’s hearing come in?”
Frostfur sighed through her nose, her ears turning back. “No. I think he’s deaf for life.”
“Oh, no,” Fireheart said before he could think. He rushed to add, “I mean, not that– well– I just imagine it’ll be hard to talk to him, right?”
“Among other things,” Frostfur replied unhappily, paused, then quietly continued, “He hasn’t said a single word, and all of his siblings can talk easily. I’m… a little worried that he won’t even be able to leave camp without someone to watch him if he grows up.”
Fireheart nodded sympathetically.
Frostfur was silent for a moment before adding, even quieter than before, “There’s just too much out there that can hurt him, you know? He’d just have to not notice a fox, or turn his back on the road…”
Silence for a long moment between them as they watched the kits. Thornkit was doing his best to corral his exuberant siblings, who kept getting away from him. Brackenkit ran in circles to greet every cat he caught sight of, while Brightkit bit at Snowkit’s tail and tried swatting at him. Snowkit’s eyes, a paler blue than the rest of them, were wide with wonder and excitement as he turned in place, staring at everything around him, flopping onto his back haunches a few times. He didn’t even look like he noticed his sister’s antagonizing.
“Well…” Fireheart turned to Frostfur now. “I think he’ll be okay. He’s got a whole Clan to keep him safe, doesn’t he?”
Frostfur’s eyes slid over to him, somewhere between wary and hopeful. He gave her a firm, supportive nod and her body relaxed a little.
“I appreciate that,” she murmured. “Thank you.”
Fireheart blinked at her encouragingly before returning to watching her litter.
“Said ‘come back’!” Thornkit was shouting, running clumsily after Brightkit.
Brightkit stuck her tongue out at him and continued on her way, which was heading straight for the ferns by the meeting stump.
“We can’t go there!” Thornkit tried to put on the speed and just tripped over his front feet, rolling and tumbling. “Brightkit!”
Brightkit squeaked triumphantly just as Cinderpaw was pushing her way out of the fern patch. Fireheart didn’t have a chance to warn Cinderpaw before the patched kitten barreled into her.
Frostfur stood up in alarm, but Cinderpaw took the hit easily. She looked down at Brightkit, who was sitting up from the collision, before wriggling her haunches and tackling the kit back. The pair rolled around in a ball of fur and playful yowls.
“By a crow’s eye, fool girl!” Yellowfang rasped, hobbling after her. “You’re on seer business, not queen duty!”
“I’m allowed to play with my Clanmates!” Cinderpaw called back, pretending to be pinned by Brightkit. “It builds character!”
Yellowfang made a noise between a grumbling growl and a heavy sigh. She squinted one eye at Fireheart, gesturing with a paw at her apprentice with an air of ‘Can you believe this rot?’.
Fireheart didn’t bother hiding his amusement. “Let them play. It’s fine.”
“Ach, you’re useless.” Yellowfang shook her head, croaking at Cinderpaw, “And you acted like the world ends tomorrow just a moment ago. Does StarClan speak to you through that lump?”
Fireheart glanced at Frostfur, whose eyes narrowed.
“Fine, fine,” Cinderpaw sighed dramatically. “Let me up, Brighty.”
Brightkit obeyed immediately—perhaps, judging by the nervous look she gave Yellowfang, that was no surprise. Cinderpaw got up and licked the kitten's forehead before trotting back to her mentor, her own fur sticking out in all directions and covered in sand.
“Did she already meet Brightkit before I got here?” Fireheart asked Frostfur.
“Both of them did,” Frostfur replied. “They visited me after the kits were born to tell me their story.”
Fireheart tilted his head. “Sorry?”
“Oh! That’s a really cool thing!” Cinderpaw said suddenly, darting over to Fireheart just as she reached Yellowfang. “Yeah, when kits are born, seers visit and tell the mother what they see in the kits’ futures!”
Yellowfang rolled her bugged-out eyes and limped over. “Trade secret, you dolt. Now don’t you go telling him what we saw.”
“Sorry!” Cinderpaw bobbed her head at her mentor. “It’s just such a cool thing to do!”
“That is cool,” Fireheart agreed, eyes wide in amazement. No matter how many times he was told about it, seers being able to read the future still blew his mind. Such an incredible ability, given to cats like squat and grumpy Yellowfang, and overly-energetic Cinderpaw…
He realized something and asked Yellowfang, “Hey, maybe you can check on what happens to them now? At least maybe Snowkit?” His eyes darted to Frostfur, worried he’d upset her, but she looked interested in this idea too, leaning forward a little.
“It’ll have to wait, boy.” Yellowfang jerked her head her apprentice’s way. “The fuzzy idiot here wants to go back to the road.”
“Oh,” Fireheart said, deflating a little in worry. “Are you still having those dreams, Cinderpaw?”
“And that dumb feeling,” Cinderpaw grumbled. She looked back at the scattered kits before leaning in and whispering, “And we’ve both gotten new visions about something else!”
“Girl!” Yellowfang said sharply.
Cinderpaw waved her tail at her mentor. “He can hear about it.”
“Seer business isn’t warrior business,” Yellowfang growled. “Especially when we know not what we see.”
Frostfur opened her mouth, but then looked past them and stood up. “Brightkit! Stop that! Come here!” She looked at the other cats, adding, “I’ll leave you to it,” before loping off towards her kits, who were wrestling and squealing.
“Fireheart can keep a secret,” Cinderpaw insisted. “He already knows about the road thing.”
“It’s fine if you don’t want to tell me,” Fireheart said quickly. “I mean, I am curious, but…”
Yellowfang scowled between him and Cinderpaw before scoffing and flicking a paw. “Go on.”
Cinderpaw immediately closed in on Fireheart’s personal space, whispering conspiratorially, “So we both saw it twice so far—there’s this puddle, and Bluestar’s reflection is in it, right? But it keeps rippling, like wind’s blowing on it or something, until you can’t even see her face really. And we both smelled the road at the same time before we woke up!”
An immediate feeling of something cold and gut-twisting hit Fireheart’s stomach without him understanding why. “Is that a bad thing?”
“Haven’t a proper clue yet,” Yellowfang muttered as she walked past him. “But never do I see a leader without something grave about to happen.”
Fireheart didn’t say anything. His throat clenched.
“We’re going to the road now to see for ourselves,” Cinderpaw added. “If something bad comes up, we can tell you later.”
Fireheart nodded, trying to ease himself back down to cheeriness. “Good luck out there.”
“Later!” Cinderpaw said, completely oblivious to whatever Yellowfang was squinting at Fireheart’s face for. She bounced past him and trotted out of camp, tail high.
Yellowfang was close enough to swat Fireheart with her tail. “Chin up. We’ll find something yet. This isn’t your problem.”
Fireheart nodded again. Yellowfang didn’t look satisfied, but she turned with a snorting sniff and hobbled out after her apprentice.
Fireheart sighed and turned back to watch the kits be scolded by their mother. The cold in his belly set there, just chilly enough to refuse to let him focus on anything else.
Why Bluestar’s reflection? Why ripples?
Whatever the answer was, Fireheart was sure he wasn’t going to like it.

WAC human au thoughts
Lain (Lain King) - ex-warehouse nightguard for his father's (the king's) company. Accidentally testified against his father in a trial and got him convicted. Currently works at a convenience store clerk and slowly becoming friends with Canary.
Mariner (Martin McMurphy Jr.) - youtube video essayist and husband to Canary. His teenage mother put him up for adoption as a child and was adopted by Martin McMurphy Sr, a war vet. He's got no intention of looking for his birth mother. A lot of his videos focus on the sea and his fascination with it.
Canary (Canary McMurphy) - WifeHusband of Mariner and cousin to Crane. Has struggled with depression most of her life and finds comfort in Mariner's philosophy on life. Recognized Lain while he was working as a convience store clerk from the news and kindled a friendship with him. Really just wants to make sure he doesn't keep eating whole bags of chips for dinner.
The King (Henry King) - Lain's adopted father and ex-CEO of some kinda mega corporation (think walmart). Is currently in jail for tax evasion, money laundering, and [redacted].
Crane (Charlotte Adler) - Owner of a small butchery that focuses primarily on poultry called The Flock. Is married to Scout but isn't in love with him. Literally picked Condor up bleeding off the streets and now he's working for her at the butchery and also fucking him on the side. Is decently close with her cousin Canary.
Condor (Connor Davenport) - Ex-con turned butcher. Used to be in underground fighting rings and other illegal activities. He "Turned over a new leaf" and now works for Crane. He's fucking her but also playing faux-Sugar daddy for Grouse. His personality is basically the same as canon he just doesn't murder as much (or does he...?)
Grouse (Gregory Spurling) - unemployeed Sugar baby to Condor. Fully head over heels in love with Condor and doesn't care that the other guy sees him as a fun side thing. Still lives in a really shitty apartment and is so greasy because his landlord won't fix his shower. Primarily showers when hes at Condor's or Crane's. Thinks he's way cooler than he is.
Scout (Stephen "Scout" Adler) - War vet which caused him to prematurely grey and Husband to Crane. Does not care for his wife, but doesn't wanna go through the hassle of divorce. He met Wolf when his car broke down in the woods and she helped him get it running again. They hit it off and Scout visits her every other weekend.
Warbler (Wilhelmina "Mina" Columbo) - highschool freshman who just figured out she was a T-girl. Lives with her single mother Molly and her older brother Tom. Molly and Crane and friends so she often spends time at Crane's house. Calls Scout "Uncle Scout." He sometimes takes Warbler and her brother to Wolf's cabin for camping trips when Molly and Crane wanna have a girl's weekend.
Wolf (Winona Wolf) - Scary british woman who lives out in the woods by herself. Very into vulture culture and hunting/fishing scene. Doesn't like visitors on her property but loves Scout so allows him to bring other guests sometimes. Her house is adorned with so many bones and taxidermy animals.
Sycamore (Celia Sycamore) - The King's ex-wife, estranged step mom of Lain, and biological mother of Aster. She's Canary's therapist and helps her work through her depression and such. Gets accidentally reconnected with Lain through Canary this way. She doesn't always make the best choices, but she's trying.
Aster (Aster Sycamore) - son of Sycamore and the King and brother of Lain. He looks up to Lain a lot, even though because of the divorce they didn't get to see each other often. He just graduated highschool and is going to become a doctor.
Coal (Cole Lowell) - Lain's childhood friend and bf and guy who peaked in highschool. He's super in love with Lain and is trying to support him but not doing the best job. Coal can't find stable work himself very often either, leaving him as not the best caretaker. He believes that Lain loves him back completely though.

Thanks for letting me send the headcannons :D. Also i apologize in advance for the long post.
While they’re both working for Professor Sycamore, Lucille is mostly out in the field while Soni has her Champion duties so they aren’t exactly THAT close with each other, but they’re on good terms. Luce legit cried seeing a familiar face when she woke up in Twisted Wonderland.
They both prefer Pokemons company compared to human’s company. Soni bc of the way Kalosian nobles treated her, Luce bc she was somewhat pressured due to the fact that she is a Prodigy child (kinda like Tony Stark and Shuri from Marvel). Soni and Lucille kinda bond with each other over this.
They split their chores in Ramshackle. Luce handles fixing the electrical and mechanical appliances in Ramshackle while Soni is in charge of the Berry Farm. They also do this with their Casual Geographic channel.
When not in class, Luce usually works in the Nurse Office and Soni (along with the Braincell trio) occasionally drops by to say hi.
Both speaking to each other in Kalosian (and scaring the sh*t out of NRC students due to how intense they sound)
Luce to Soni during dinner: “Man I wish my grandma was as nice and caring as Ms Opal, mine called us (Luce and her older sisters) “half-breed abominations” and that our dad was an embarrassment for marrying a nobody from Sinnoh and “tainting the pure and noble blood of the Great and Noble house of Beaumont”. Granted he took himself out of the will, leave the family and cut all sorts of contact with them on his own accord years before he even met our mom but still”
Soni 🤝 Lucille : Parents to a bunch of dumbasses. The day these two go on strike is the day NRC collapses
Soni trust Luce to babysit Happiny the most bc she is experience with caring for baby Pokemons, not to mention Lucille has a Chansey of her own.
There is an old piano somewhere in Ramshackle and sometimes Soni can hear Luce playing soothing tunes on the piano.
Lucille understands the burden placed upon Soni’s shoulder so she supports her as best she can. Soni sometimes found snacks with positive notes attached to it in her pockets.
Sometimes they tell each other their tales from their travels (well at least the parts that Soni can tell Luce w/o revealing too much and Luce respects her choice).
Luce is vaguely aware of what happens to Soni’s arm that caused her to wear her gloves, and as curious as she is, Luce will not push Soni abt it if she doesn’t want to talk.
Both have an agreement to not Mega Evolve their Pokemon unless it is ABSOLUTELY necessary. Soni bc of her arm and Luce bc of Mega Houndoom’s dex entry.
If there’s anything Lucille is got at, it’s hacking. Crowley better watch his back unless he wants the girls to extort him everytime he tries to blackmail them.
tumblr why did you reload and delete all my stuff *cries* Don't worry about long posts! It's fine-
Imagine waking up in Twisted Wonderland and seeing the Champion of your region there, looking annoyed like that's gotta be a moment of "We just got kidnapped oh crap-"
Soni's like "Well, this feels familiar" because she's had times where lab assistants were kidnapped and she had to go save them due to a) noble plots and b) Neo Flare needing leverage. I've wanted to write a oneshot on this in the view of the kidnapped lab assistant but didn't have time sldkjflkj
Them bonding over their responsibilities in their respective roles and statuses is nice, although it'd take Soni a while to open up about it because of government classified information and what qualifies as that = a headache and a pain in the butt. Speaking of Soni's adventures can be a mix of Team Flare, her gym battles, her experiences, and a lot of pre-teen to young teenage drama in between, making it stupid complicated on that front.
Luce repairing the items in the dorm tho 👀 I can see her trying to make her own Pokemon-centered items like a healing station because while it's fine to let the Pokemon rest and recover that way, there could be larger medical issues that most technology in TWST just doesn't have to remedy for Pokemon.
Them talking in Kalosian is just 👌
Soni nodding and in Kalosian: "I can understand that sentiment. My maternal grandparents are... not the most encouraging people, especially when my mother left Johto. Granny's never seen anything wrong with it, mostly because she's seen many things in her lifetime that to base people off of what you see is ridiculous."
Everyone else at NRC: "wtf are they talking about it sounds menancing-"
Rook in the corner: *smiles*
Little Happiny getting a big sister Chansey tho 🥺🥺🥺 I can see Deuce just looking at Chansey and Happiny and just crying at the idea of Happiny growing up- cue the tissues from Soni alskdljkajk
Soni finding positive notes in her pockets would confuse her, mostly because she doesn't know how to take that- Also Mega Evolution is definitely a higher risk for those very reasons because wow, that would expose a lot about Soni that she does not want to share
Operation: Prevent the Crow Man from blackmailing us- let's goooo- also, Casual Pokegraphic channel has two types of videos now with Luce having a field video and explaining Pokemon in the wild while trying not to get noticed because it's dangerous to do so and Soni explaining what not to do around these Pokemon.

Who were/are their parents/guardians? - William T. Sycamore (father) and Helen Ross (mother).
Their gender? - Female.
Their date of birth? - June 5th.
What clothing style? - She prefers comfortability and practicality over style, but casually will wear T-shirts and cargo pants, for the pockets.
What is their favourite food after a break-up? - Pizza, Bacon and Chicken.
Their favourite thing to do after a break-up? - Binge watch TV shows.
What happens in the ‘honeymoon phase’ for this character? - Stress free relaxation, just admiring her S.O and enjoying their company.
How many serious relationships have they been/are currently in? - 2.
What is their nationality? - American.
What languages do they speak? - English, just a hint of Spanish and is adamant on learning Italian.
What is their profession/Education? - Electronics/Software Engineer, Hardlight Holographics Specialist.
Their favourite comfort food? - Ice cream, particularly a chocolate/caramel combo.
What’s a food they hate? - Cake, just something about how it feels/ tastes in her mouth just doesn’t sit right.
Their music taste? - Spanish/Cuban/Latin instrumentals, feel good music that can be upbeat, romantic or relaxing.
Is there a story behind their name/meaning? - No story behind her real name, but she took her codename from using an old 128gb USB stick, hidden in the top of a pen.
Something they do that seems childish to others? - Tends to quote movies/games in applicable situations when she thinks no one is listening... they usually aren’t.
What is their all-time favourite TV show? - Knight Rider. (Does that show exist in AoM? Eh whatever, if they can get Hasselhoff to voice one of the trailers, I’d say it exists.)
What is their all-time favourite movie? - None of Hollywood’s, though she has (regrettably) engaged in a marathon watch of his movies.
How big is their family? - Big, like real big. It’s an old farming family/community that’s been around since before the US independence.
Are they close to anyone specific in the family? - Her mother and father, as well as 2 of her 4 immediate cousins.
Have they got any allergies? - None that she knows of, but isn’t keen to find out if she does.
Are they an emotional person? - Despite her introverted personality, yes.
Do they get angry/lose their temper quickly? - Very much so, especially around a certain former FBI agent...
What are some of their guilty pleasures? - She likes to collect trophies of certain events in her life, particularly of her time in MAYHEM. She also has secretly followed Hollywood on Instablam, so she can laugh at the latest stupid thing he’s gotten himself into.
Do they have pets? Do they want pets? - She has an American Thoroughbred horse named Janey back at the family farm, but otherwise no, especially due to rules aboard the ARK.
Do they like kids? Do they want kids/have kids? - Kids are okay, so long as they’re not too... intense. She has no plans for having any, however.

Do they have any tattoos? - Nope.
Do they have any piercings? - Nope.
What is their hair colour? Is it their natural colour? - Natural auburn-ish colour.
Do they like musicals? - Not particularly, but she’ll watch one as a tag along.
Do they like marmite? - The fuck is marmite? (Just kidding, I know what off-brand monstrosity is.) No, she does not.
Do they like glitter? - Occasionally, but she generally finds it unimpressive.
Do they believe in the supernatural? - Not really, as pretty much everything she encounters/works with is science based.
Have they ever seen a dead body? - Many, unfortunately.
Have they ever had a near-death experience? - Besides working for MAYHEM? Not that she can recall.
Have they ever broken a bone? - Thankfully not.
What are they like when they’re drunk/what kind of drunk are they? - Gigabyte avoids getting drunk at all costs, but when it does happen, she has a rather low tolerance. She becomes loud/emotional and has almost no filter either, so she’ll spill personal secrets and whatnot before she tips over the edge to incoherence.
Have they ever drunk underage? - Definitely not.
What is the first thing they do when they wake up? - Goes over a mental daily schedule in her head.
Do they consider themselves popular? - Not really, though Gigabyte likes to think she’s at least well received among other agents such as Gremlin, Rama and Friday.
How do they like their tea/coffee? - Neither, she’s a hot chocolate person.
What do they smell like? - She prefers to have a slight lavender scent, but considering the amount of smokers on the ARK that scent tends to stay in her room at most.
Are they a virgin? - Yes, but not for a lack of awkward trying.
Do they wear glasses/contacts? - Protective glasses for R&D.
Are they good at remembering significant dates? Anniversaries, birthdays etc? - She has an impressive mental calendar of dates, but will clam up if you ask her to remember any of them.

Limnofregata
By Ripley Cook
Etymology: Freshwater Frigatebird
First Described By: Olson, 1977
Classification: Dinosauromorpha, Dinosauriformes, Dracohors, Dinosauria, Saurischia, Eusaurischia, Theropoda, Neotheropoda, Averostra, Tetanurae, Orionides, Avetheropoda, Coelurosauria, Tyrannoraptora, Maniraptoromorpha, Maniraptoriformes, Maniraptora, Pennaraptora, Paraves, Eumaniraptora, Averaptora, Avialae, Euavialae, Avebrevicauda, Pygostaylia, Ornithothoraces, Euornithes, Ornithuromorpha, Ornithurae, Neornithes, Neognathae, Neoaves, Aequorlitornithes, Ardeae, Aequornithes, Suliformes, Fregatidae
Referred Species: L. azygosternon, L. hasegawai, L. hutchisoni
Status: Extinct
Time and Place: Limnofregata is known from between 53.5 and 48.5 million years ago, in the Ypresian age of the Eocene of the Paleogene
Limnofregata has been found entirely within the Fossil Butte Member of the Green River Formation in Wyoming
Physical Description: Limnofregata is one of the earliest known examples of the Frigatebirds - a group of water-associated birds with a distinctive appearance. These birds have long bills for catching fish in the oceans and huge, distinctive pouches on their throats. They are able to soar for weeks on end, making them highly adapted for their water-journeying lifestyle. Limnofregata, being a very early example of the group, look like what you’d expect a transitional form of the frigatebirds to be - showcasing some of the same distinct shape of the modern group, while still not being quite there yet.
Limnofregata showed significant similarity to living Frigatebirds - like living members of the species it had short, stocky legs, stronger bones in the wings, and wide hips. This indicates that it was already on the path towards high levels of specialization for flight. However, its wings were not quite as long, in terms of proportion, as living Frigatebirds; this indicates that it didn’t utilize soaring as much in its life. Limnofregata also had a shorter bill and long, slitlike nose openings, more like modern boobies; it also lacked the noticeable hook found on modern Frigatebird bills. The size of the nostrils reduced in Frigatebirds as they transitioned to more saltwater habitats (aka, the open ocean), so the large nostril openings in Limnofregata point to its freshwater habitat. Limnofregata was also not sexually dimorphic in terms of size, an important characteristic of living Frigatebirds.
Limnofregata varied in size amongst the different species, but in general it had a wingspan of between 100 to 120 centimeters - in Imperial units, that’s between 3 and 4 feet long. This is a little more than half the length of living Frigatebird wingspans, but their bodies are roughly the same size as living Frigatebird, adding more evidence to their wings being less adapted for soaring.
By Scott Reid
Diet: Given their distinct difference in beak shape compared to modern Frigatebirds, and their completely different habitat (rather than being associated with the open ocean, Limnofregata lived near a lake; read more in the Ecosystem subsection), it is unlikely that it had a similar diet. Instead, Limnofregata was probably more of an opportunist, like modern gulls - feeding on a wide variety of food, of which fish was only one kind of many. As such, it was much more omnivorous than its living relatives.
Behavior: Limnofregata was heavily associated with a lake ecosystem, and, as something more analogous to living gulls, it would have been the asshole of that lake ecosystem. Rather than soaring about looking for sources of fish, like living Frigatebirds, it would have probably stayed close to the shore and the edge of the freshwater lakes in its environment, feeding on smaller vertebrates and harrassing other birds in the area for their food, attempting to grab the catches of other birds and eating their fish instead of catching the food themselves. As opportunists, they would have congregated especially frequently at moments of extensive food production, such as when large numbers of fish died off in the ecosystem as oxygen depleted in the lakes.
Given that the sexes were alike in size, it’s possible that they didn’t have as extensive systems of sexual display as living Frigatebirds do; though, of course, no throat pouches have been fossilized either way, so we can’t be certain. As large numbers of these birds have been fossilized together, it is likely that they formed large flocks of convenience, like modern gulls today.
By José Carlos Cortés
Ecosystem: The Green River Formation is another example of a well-documented ecosystem of the global rainforest of the early Eocene; in fact, it is older than the Messel Pit, and showcases unique creatures as a result. Similar to the Messel Pit, the Green River Formation is associated with a fossil lake system scattered amongst the jungle; however, given that the animals of Green River were not quite as small as those of the Messel Pit, the vegetation does not seem to have been quite as dense. The dominant tree type surrounding the lake were sycamore trees, though ferns, palms, and many other plant types were present as well. The entire system was greatly affected by changes in sediment as the Rocky Mountains formed around them. This commonly lead to great influxes of nutrients - like when industrial companies dump phosphorus into lakes today - overwhelming the lake system and suffocating the fish inside. This influx of sediment and minerals allowed for the ecosystem’s unique preservation; it also would have lead to periodic upwelling of dead fish for Limnofregata to munch on. These fish included animals such as rays, catfish, suckers, and relatives of modern herrings and sardines, along with many others. Crocodiles such as Borealosuchus were present, and probably would have fed upon Limnofregata. There were also some of the earliest primates, bats, and an armadillo-like mammal as well.
Of course, birds were extremely common, to the point of having feathers preserved in many cases. Other dinosaurs known from the Fossil Butte Member include the Lithornithids (flighted, tree-dwelling relatives of modern Ostriches and Emu) Pseudocrypturus and Calciavis; the flamingo-like duck Presbyornis; the pheasant relative Gallinuloides; the early swift and hummingbird relative Eocypselus; the frogmouth-like Fluvioviridavis and Prefica; the mousebird relative Anneavis; the early woodpecker relative Neanis; the Parrots of Prey Cyrilavis and Tynskya; and the early passerine relatives with parrot feet Zygodactylus and Eozygodactylus. Thus, the Green River Formation was another example of a great place to see how dinosaurs were getting on after the extinction.
Other: Feather impressions are known from Limnofregata, but they aren’t very exciting in terms of morphology.
Species Differences: Since all three species are from the same place, they are mainly distinguished from one another based on shape and size. L. hasegawai was much larger, about the size of the largest modern Frigatebirds; L. azygosternon was somewhat somewhat smaller and more comparable with the smaller species of the group today. L. hutchisoni differs in terms of how its wing bones are shaped, but was large like L. hasegawai, potentially even larger.

These are Hard Times for Dreamers &&. Love Lost Believers ( ALL MUSES // HARRY POTTER AU )
Below the read more is a summary of each muse’s role in this AU. Ages and occupations may change according to the plot of any threads written in this verse.
TOBIRAMA.
House: Slytherin Year/Age: Fifth/15-16 (Prefect) Familiar: White fennec fox Wand: Maple wood, unicorn hair core, 10 ¾", hard flexibility Patronus: Rat
Although they are commonly regarded as vermin or pests, rats have impressive traits that signify them as worthy opponents, including sociability, resourcefulness, and ambition. Despite their timidness, rats are known to be stubborn and full of devious ways. Thus, they should be treated with caution.
One of the few to break the mould Slytherin has crafted for itself throughout its history as a house of evildoers and ne’er-do-wells, Tobirama is a pillar of blind justice, though his drive and ambition leave little room to question his rightful Hogwarts house. He aspires to become an inventor of spells, determined to learn everything there is to learn about magic and how it works. Above even that, though, he longs to make a name for himself that stands alone from “Hashirama’s little brother”. He respects and, to a degree, admires his brother’s achievements in the wizarding world, but he’s never been one to settle for walking in the footsteps of someone else.
MADARA.
House: Ravenclaw Year/Age: Sixth/16-17 Familiar: Gyrfalcon Wand: Ebony wood, thestral tail hair core, 12", unbending flexibility Patronus: White stallion
Those with the white stallion patronus possess a strong sense of self. It is difficult to convince them to turn away from personal beliefs or change who they are. Strength and durability in character make the white stallion especially formidable compared to the conjurers of other horse type patronus. However, those who wield the white stallion can often be provocative and rub people up the way.
Madara is but a young wizard trying to find his path in life. He detests the supremacist ideology held by nearly all “purebloods”, largely because the Uchiha are a branch family of the Otsutsuki and are still treated as lesser to this day. Their distant Senju cousins don’t receive the same treatment due to their famous contributions to all of wizardkind in the form of both magical and legislative inventions and advancements. Both the Senju and Uchiha became branch families when their ancestors “tainted” the bloodline with muggle blood. Madara has resented the Otsutsuki for as long as he can remember and he dreams of one day absolving the Uchiha name by abolishing the widespread elitist pureblood propaganda that has plagued the wizarding world for centuries.
TETSUJIN.
House: Ravenclaw Age: 40 Familiar: Siamese Cat Wand: Ebony wood, dragon heartstring core, 11 ¼", rigid flexibility Patronus: Hyena
Often given a bad reputation, hyenas are cunning hunters and scavengers that know what they have to do to survive in the animal kingdom. They live and hunt in packs/clans and are very social animals. They often communicate with those in their clans by making a variety of noises, including the “laughter” they are so famous for. Hyenas are loyal, creative, and fierce.
Tetsujin was Ravenclaw’s poster boy of idle curiosity and devotion to his studies during his years at Hogwarts, so it was no surprise that he was Head Boy in his seventh year. He’d dabbled in such a wide array of magical genres that he didn’t have a clear idea of what he wanted to do until his last year of school. He’d known he wanted to work for the Ministry of Magic since the summer following his fifth year, but the specific position he wanted didn’t come to him for some time. Having achieved his latent desires, he now works as an Obliviator for the Ministry, though few know of this occupation. He doubles as Hogwarts’ professor of Ghoul Studies and only the Headmaster knows of his second job. He’s been assigned to keep an eye on the students should any issues with confidentiality arise.
JIRAIYA.
House: Gryffindor Age: 54 Familiar: Natterjack toad Wand: Silver Lime wood, phoenix feather core, 13 ¾", quite bendy flexibility Patronus: Badger
The recognizable mascot of Hufflepuff House, badgers represent determination. Badgers mostly keep to themselves but are aggressive when threatened. Connected to the earth, the badger is grounded and celebrates individuality. This creature’s stubbornness and instinct to protect make it a formidable enemy for Dementors!
In the glory of his youth, Jiraiya was fondly known as “the Bastard of Hufflepuff”, a title that began in mockery but became a moniker of great pride for its owner. It had been no secret that his muggle father was a deadbeat and that his witch mother had never wanted to give birth to him, but growing up an orphan only strengthened Jiraiya’s resolve to find his own family. He’s still very close friends with some of those from his Hogwarts house, as well as some from the others. He’d made a point of becoming everyone’s friend during his school years, and while he didn’t succeed by a long shot, he still made some everlasting connections that he wouldn’t trade for the world. Currently he’s an accomplished author of magical erotica and spends the rest of his time managing a small inn in Hogsmeade called Hiffle & Piffle Inn.
HINATA.
House: Hufflepuff Year/Age: Fifth/15-16 (Prefect) Familiar: Mini rex rabbit Wand: Cypress wood, dragon heartstring core, 10 ¼", quite bendy flexibility Patronus: Doe
As the Patronus of Severus Snape and Lily Potter, the doe is fiercely protective of its loved ones, as displayed through its caring and nurturing nature. The doe is also representative of gentleness yet strong determination, and with its high level of intuition and sensitivity, it battles life’s challenges with the utmost grace and vigilance.
As the heiress of the pureblooded Hyuga family, Hinata has been taught since birth to be graceful, dignified, and leaderly. She is decidedly none of those things due to a predisposition toward clumsiness and anxiety amoung other flaws. She’s just as disappointed in herself as her family is, though she hopes that by her seventh year at Hogwarts, she’ll have learned to become to woman they want her to be. At the same time, however, she secretly yearns for an escape from her life as little more than an heiress. She wants to explore herself and her possibilities beyond a duty to her family. She just needs a push in the right direction.
KAGAMI.
House: Hufflepuff Age: 23 Familiar: Ferret Wand: Maple wood, phoenix feather core, 10", pliant flexibility Patronus: Dolphin
Intelligence and sociability are among the main attributes of the dolphin. Also known for their playfulness and loyalty, dolphins live and work together in groups to aid the sick and injured and to defend each other from predators. Its incredible intelligence is put to good use in the form of solving complex problems and other such challenges. The dolphin does not enjoy dull, routine activities, so keeping busy with interesting tasks is a must!
Kagami actually hails from Mahotokoro in Japan and he is a professional Quidditch player for the Toyohashi Tengu. His team’s championships eventually led him to visit Hogwarts in England, where he giddily requested to wear the Sorting Hat out of pure curiosity as to what house he would be in. Once he was assigned Hufflepuff, he was offered a tour of the common rooms, which he gracefully accepted. He’s made similar requests all across the globe, ever so happy to see what the different magic schools were like on the inside. It was during his stay at Hogwarts for a scrimmage between one of their Quidditch teams and his that his wand broke and he had to order a new one from Ollivander. He’s quite fond of it and would say that it’s quite fond of him as well.
INDRA.
House: Slytherin Year/Age: Seventh/17-18 Familiar: Maine coon Wand: Pine wood, basilisk horn core, 12 ½", rigid flexibility Patronus: Dragon
One of the most powerful and formidable creatures of the magical world, dragons are ambitious and dominant. With the ability to breathe fire, they quickly assert themselves, garnering both fear and respect from those around them. They are unafraid to take risks and prefer to live by their own set of rules. They are quick to lead and do not back down from a challenge. Dragons are strong in their convictions and will stand for what they believe is right. Those with a dragon for a patronus are sure to be fierce fighters, and the Dementors better be ready for a challenge!
Known Parselmouth and heir apparent to a family of notoriously pureblooded Death Eaters, many Hogwarts students regard Indra as a Voldemort groupie, with respect to his wealthy status, of course. He has yet to make his stance clear on either his family’s affiliation with the Death Eaters or Voldemort himself, so it’s become a hot topic for gossip and rumours throughout the school. He shares an unnerving aura of stoicism and ruthlessness with his maine coon familiar, whose eyes follow everyone who dares come too close to his owner. Despite being a dead ringer for Slytherin’s reputation of villainy types, his goals and ambitions are a mystery. He largely keeps to himself and any rumour of his being seen willingly socializing are just that—rumours.
RYUZETSU.
House: Gryffindor Year/Age: Fifth/15-16 Familiar: Chinchilla Wand: Sycamore wood, unicorn hair core, 11 ½", unbending flexibility Patronus: Siberian cat
Siberian cats are perfect as patronuses. Fearless yet easygoing, they seem to always know when their humans need them for support or comfort. They can be quiet, with soft melodic purrs and chirps. While these may not be the cats to chase down a Dementor, they will stay with you, protecting and calming you until the Dementor fades away.
Having witnessed the death of her childhood best friend at a young age, Ryuzetsu has enjoyed, more or less, the company of thestrals for the majority of her life. She finds comfort in their presence as if they were remnants of Muku keeping an eye on her. Her mother and father head the family business of dragon keeping, a career she’s very much interested in taking up after graduating from Hogwarts. She’s always felt a certain kinship with dragons for their strength and ferocity, striving to become a strong and ferocious woman of her own.

L Brands Plans to Spin Off Victoria’s Secret Exclusive: L Brands will spin off Victoria’s Secret L Brands has decided to spin off Victoria’s Secret rather than sell it, DealBook is first to report. The company said last year it was considering separating Victoria’s Secret from the rest of its business, and we previously reported that it was testing private equity’s interest. Ultimately, sources say, L Brands has decided to split itself into two independent, publicly listed companies: Victoria’s Secret and Bath & Body Works. The deal is expected to close in August. Bids didn’t match what Victoria’s Secret expects to get in a spinoff. DealBook hears that L Brands received several bids north of $3 billion. It turned them down, because it expects to be valued somewhere between $5 billion and $7 billion in a spinoff to L Brands shareholders. Analysts at Citi and JPMorgan recently valued Victoria’s Secret as a stand-alone company at $5 billion. The pandemic torpedoed a sale last year for much less. That agreement, announced in February 2020 with the investment firm Sycamore Partners, valued Victoria’s Secret at $1.1 billion. Apart from a pandemic that was about to upend the retail industry, Victoria’s Secret was dealing with a series of challenges: a brand that had fallen out of touch, accusations of misogyny and sexual harassment in the workplace and revelations about the ties between Les Wexner, the company’s founder and former chairman, and Jeffrey Epstein. (Wexner stepped down as C.E.O. last year and said in March that he and his wife are not running for re-election on the company’s board.) As the pandemic shuttered stores and battered sales, Sycamore sued L Brands to get out of the deal, and L Brands countersued to enforce it, heralding a spate of similar battles between buyers and sellers. Eventually, in May 2020, the sides agreed to call off the deal. A lot has changed since then. Six months ago, L Brands tapped Martin Waters, who headed its international division, to be C.E.O. of Victoria’s Secret, and he will continue to lead the company after the spinoff. The retailer has overhauled its brand, de-emphasizing the overtly sexy image and products that customers saw as exclusionary. It has become “less focused on a specific demographic target and more focused on being broadly inclusive of all women of all shapes and sizes and colors and ethnicities and genders and areas of interest,” Waters said on a recent earnings call. The company also closed more than 200 stores and focused on improving profitability, which rose sharply at the end of last year, surpassing its prepandemic results. The pandemic has spawned some retail winners. Victoria’s Secret, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Michaels and others were able to accelerate digital transformations that may have otherwise taken years. Direct sales at Victoria’s Secret in North America rose to 44 percent of the total last year, from 25 percent the year before. It’s unclear whether pandemic shopping trends will stick, and “it would be reasonable to expect some reversion,” Stuart Burgdoerfer, the L Brands C.F.O., said at a March event. “But I also think that people have very much enjoyed some of the benefits that were forced on us or triggered through the pandemic.” HERE’S WHAT’S HAPPENING Markets wobble amid inflation fears. U.S. stock futures are down, as are European and Asian stock indexes, following data showing that U.S. consumers expect a bump in inflation and that factory-gate prices in China rose more than expected last month. April’s Consumer Price Index data is set to be released today, and is expected to show a sharp rise from a pandemic-depressed level last year. China’s birthrate slows again. The country’s population is growing at its slowest pace in decades, posing grave social and economic risks to the world’s second-largest economy. While the U.S. also reported a drastic slowdown in population expansion, China “is growing old without first having grown rich,” The Times’s Sui-Lee Wee writes. President Biden defends federal unemployment benefits. He rejected claims that $300-a-week supplemental payments are deterring unemployed Americans from seeking work, but he ordered the Labor Department to help reinstate work search requirements. Separately, Chipotle said it was raising wages, to an average of $15 an hour, to attract workers. The Colonial Pipeline is expected to “substantially” reopen within days. The pipeline, which supplies nearly half of the East Coast’s fuel, is expected to restore most services by the weekend after a ransomware attack. U.S. authorities formally blamed a hacker group and pledged to “disrupt and prosecute” the perpetrators. More children may soon be vaccinated. The F.D.A. yesterday approved the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for 12- to 15-year-olds in the U.S., potentially helping reopen schools and other parts of the economy more quickly. But while cases are declining worldwide, they are surging in countries that lack vaccines. And the W.H.O. labeled a virus variant spreading fast in India as “of concern.” Does Amazon need more money? Amazon sold $18.5 billion worth of bonds yesterday, joining other corporate giants taking advantage of ultralow interest rates to raise money because … well, why not? The e-commerce titan sold some of its debt at a record-low interest rate for a corporate issuer — barely above what the U.S. government pays. About $1 billion worth of two-year bonds has a yield just 0.1 percent above the equivalent in Treasuries. That’s a huge vote of confidence in Amazon, which has emerged as a huge winner during the pandemic. The company also set a record for yields on a 20-year bond, besting Alphabet. Over all, investors placed $50 billion worth of orders, underscoring enthusiasm for debt that yields next to nothing. Today in Business Updated May 10, 2021, 5:52 p.m. ET It raised another $1 billion in the form of a sustainability bond, which is meant to finance investments in environmentally minded projects like zero-carbon infrastructure and cleaner transportation. Amazon is the latest company to sell bonds aimed at E.S.G. investors, a market that reached $270 billion last year and could double this year. To be sure, the bulk of the offering will finance typical corporate maneuvers like share buybacks, acquisitions and capital expenditures, according to the bond prospectus. It will add to the nearly $34 billion in cash that Amazon had on hand at the end of March — as will profits that are growing at extraordinary rates for a company of its size. Macy’s has proposed building a commercial office tower on top of its flagship Herald Square store in New York City, part of a broader development plan the retailer says would improve the area. It plans to spend $235 million on redeveloping subway stations and creating a “car-free pedestrian-friendly urban space.” The proposal is a bold bet by the beleaguered retailer that shoppers and workers will flood back there after the pandemic. How to collect a trillion dollars Today, the Senate Finance Subcommittee on Taxation will hold a hearing on offshore tax evasion. “The tax gap is a massive problem, especially the part driven by ultrarich individuals and corporations stashing income overseas,” Senator Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island, the subcommittee chair, told DealBook. That gap “could be as much as a trillion dollars,” he said. “That’s trillion with a ‘T.’” This money would help fund President Biden’s spending plans, which also run into the trillions. It’s difficult to quantify just how much money goes uncollected each year, officials say. Corporate tax collections in the U.S. are “at historic lows and well below what other countries collect,” according to a recent Treasury report. U.S. multinational companies can be taxed at a 50 percent discount compared with their domestic peers, an incentive to shift profits abroad. “Bermuda, a country of merely 64,000 people, shows 10 percent of all reported U.S. multinational foreign profit,” the report explained. “The Biden administration is serious about stopping tax cheats and so are we,” Whitehouse said. The hearing, which features I.R.S. and Treasury officials, will discuss legislation to end corporate tax breaks that incentivize profit shifting, a proposed $80 billion investment in I.R.S. enforcement, a new approach to international tax diplomacy and proposed changes to the tax code. THE SPEED READ Deals The investment firm TPG named Jon Winkelried as its sole C.E.O.; Jim Coulter, who previously shared the role, will become executive chairman and lead the firm’s E.S.G.-focused funds. DealBook: Money, Morality and a Challenge to Silicon Valley
Good morning. On our radar: L Brands is said to be close to a deal to sell control of Victoria’s Secret to the investment firm Sycamore Partners. (Was this email forwarded to you? Sign up here.)
‘Where is my money coming from?’
Silicon Valley is abuzz over a series of tweets from Chamath Palihapitiya, the venture capitalist and provocateur, suggesting that investment firms and start-ups should look more closely at who’s giving them money.• Referring to investment firms’ limited partners, or investors, he tweeted: “What if the LPs money was stolen by an autocratic leader? What if their family made guns or alcohol or tobacco? What if they believe in Pro-Life vs Pro-Choice or No-Guns vs Ok-Guns?”• “The best GPs should know that they can pick their Capital partner and I would encourage them to ask tougher questions of their LPs.”• “Why make the Harvard endowment any more money? What systemic bias do you perpetuate?”Mr. Palihapitiya’s tweets were inspired by a WSJ investigation into how the Mormon Church secretly built a $100 billion investment portfolio. (He added on Twitter that he has “ZERO” issues with the church.)Andrew’s take:• This conversation started over a year ago around Saudi Arabia’s investments in Uber and SoftBank’s Vision Fund, after the dissident writer Jamal Khashoggi was murdered in a Saudi consulate.• But the decibel level is getting louder, and such questions may become a larger part of big investors’ decisions.A programming note: Marcelo Claure, SoftBank’s C.O.O. and WeWork’s chairman, will talk with Andrew on “Squawk Box” at 8 a.m. It will be Mr. Claure’s first interview since WeWork named a new C.E.O. — and comes amid reports of trouble for SoftBank’s next Vision Fund.____________________________Today’s DealBook Briefing was written by Andrew Ross Sorkin in New York and Michael J. de la Merced in London.____________________________
Globalization, not streaming, won the Oscars
Netflix might have hoped that this year’s Academy Awards would be its breakthrough. It came away disappointed.• Netflix was up for 24 awards last night, but won two: best supporting actress for Laura Dern in “Marriage Story” and best documentary for “American Factory.”• And it had spent an estimated $70 million selling Oscar voters on its nominees, which included “Marriage Story” and “The Irishman.”• The big winner instead was the South Korean satire “Parasite,” which became the first non-English-language movie to win best picture.Victory for “Parasite” was “a defining moment,” writes Kelly Gilblom of Bloomberg, “in the globalization of Hollywood, which had previously favored homegrown films over foreign-language fare.”But don’t feel too bad for Netflix. As Ryan Faughnder of the LA Times notes, the streaming giant plans to spend $17.3 billion on content this year. And all those nominations had already burnished its street cred. So what’s an extra $70 million?More: Jeff Bezos came in for some ribbing by Chris Rock: “Jeff is so rich, he got divorced and he’s still the richest man in the world. He saw ‘Marriage Story’ and thought it was a comedy.”
Looks like the White House isn’t buying Bill Barr’s Huawei plan
The attorney general made waves last week when he suggested that the U.S. back takeovers of Nokia or Ericsson, Huawei of China’s European rivals on 5G networking — or buy them outright. But his colleagues in the Trump administration don’t seem keen.• Larry Kudlow, the president’s chief economic adviser, said the U.S. “is not in the business of buying companies, whether they’re domestic or foreign,” according to David Shepardson of Reuters, though he added there was “nothing to prohibit” American tech companies from making the move.• And Vice President Mike Pence said the administration would follow a plan laid out by the Federal Communications Commission’s chairman to free up more 5G spectrum. Those comments probably dampened investors’ hopes for a takeover or two. Shares in both Nokia and Ericsson jumped on Friday — but were down in trading this morning.
Goldman’s goal of being the next Blackstone takes a hit
Goldman Sachs has made it very clear that it wants to be known for more than investment banking and trading. But some impending departures may set back its private equity ambitions.• Sumit Rajpal and Andrew Wolff, two of the three heads of a big private investing unit, are retiring, Dakin Campbell of Business Insider reports. The division will now be run by the remaining head, Julian Salisbury.• Mr. Rajpal and Mr. Wolff were expected to lead Goldman’s latest private equity fund, which was scheduled to begin formal fund-raising this week with a target of $8 billion.Goldman’s C.E.O., David Solomon, was warned this might happen when he decided to combine several investment teams into one division, Mr. Campbell reports.• Rich Friedman, the chairman of the private-investing unit, had “resisted the plan from the start.”Why it matters: Goldman has hoped to raise $100 billion more in private equity assets over the next five years, Liz Hoffman of the WSJ points out, challenging the likes of Blackstone and KKR. Infighting probably won’t help.
The news Silicon Valley will pay for
The Information, which Jessica Lessin founded in 2013 to dive deep into tech news, costs $399 a year. But the tech elite doesn’t seem to mind ponying up, another sign that subscriptions can sustain a healthy news outlet, Ed Lee of the NYT writes.• “She pays competitive salaries (albeit without equity) — as much as $180,000 or more for some top reporters,” Mr. Lee writes.• The site has regularly broken big stories, like sexual harassment allegations against a venture capital mogul and management problems at Google’s Nest division.• Subscribers include James Murdoch and Laurene Powell Jobs. What Ms. Lessin doesn’t do is take advertising or venture capital, though she started The Information with “less than $1 million” of her share of her family’s fortune. (She and her husband, Sam Lessin, are the children of wealthy investors.)But she still has hurdles to clear. She might have to hit 40,000 paying readers by this year to meet sales objectives — when she only passed 20,000 around the middle of last year, Mr. Lee reports.
That time when Gates beat Nadal
Of course, it didn’t hurt Bill Gates to have Roger Federer as his doubles partner. And the match was for charity. That said, Mr. Gates “played one pinpoint lob volley that the announcer described as ‘the billionaire’s touch,’” according to the AP.
The speed read
Deals• Alibaba and other Chinese investors are pulling back from Silicon Valley. (FT)• Henry Ellenbogen, the former star start-up investor at T. Rowe Price, has raised about $6 billion for his new investment fund. (FT)Politics and policy• President Trump is set to unveil his budget proposal today, which cuts $4.4 trillion in spending, but keeps a federal deficit until 2035. (NYT)• The economy is exactly where Mr. Trump wants it. (Upshot)• Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez referred to the economist “Milton Keynes” over the weekend, merging two wildly different men into one English town. (Daily Mail)Tech• Ransomware attacks are increasingly crippling cities and businesses. (NYT)• A deep dive into QAnon, the pro-Trump conspiracy theory, and its consequences. (NYT)• Employees at SoftBank’s Vision Fund reportedly often feel pressure to do deals, even ones they think ill-advised. (Information)Best of the rest• Real estate industry groups are challenging New York’s ban on rental broker fees. (NYT)• Doug Hodge, the former Pimco C.E.O. given nine months in prison for his part in the college admissions scandal, writes, “I should have listened to my conscience.” (WSJ Opinion)• The first speaking engagement for Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, since stepping back from British royal family duties? A JPMorgan Chase investment conference in Miami. (Page Six)Thanks for reading! We’ll see you tomorrow. We’d love your feedback. Please email thoughts and suggestions to [email protected]. One-shot: In Need of Healing
(The original title was About Healing and Feelings)
I have been wanting to write something new for a while now, but writer’s block (and limited time) are trying to stop me, so @modeststroke suggested I edit this fic so I’d get at least some writing practice. Anyway, I wrote this fic a year ago, and it takes place during Mairin’s Kalos Quest, i.e. when she’s 17 and has returned from her individual journey. I did add something to the dialogue so it does have something new as well.
Also, it’s 0:25 and I have to be up in like 6 hours so excuse me for not spell checking the changes I made. There probably are mistakes in it.
Words: 1809
A few months into their new journey, Alain and Mairin stopped on Route 5 for the night. Alain had slept the previous nights rather badly, so when they settled into their respective tents that night, he passed out quickly. However, only after few hours of sleep, he woke up to a scream coming from the tent next to his. Just pulling his T-shirt on, he got out of his tent to see what was wrong. What if team Flare had attacked, and…? He didn’t dare to finish his thoughts. Even after 6 years, those events were still so fresh in his memory.
Not wanting to break into Mairin’s personal space without her consent, Alain first tried to communicate with her from outside the tent. However, she didn’t answer to his yells, so he eventually opened the zip of Mairin’s tent with shaky fingers. He couldn’t wait any longer if someone indeed was with her...
He sighed of relief when he saw she was alone, only her loyal Chesnaught Chespie next to her. Despite Chespie’s attempts to wake her up, she remained asleep, but she was trashing around restlessly and sweating a lot in her sleeping bag. Alain flinched and closed his eyes for a moment when she screamed in her sleep again and then started helping Chespie, because obviously whatever she was seeing was hurting her (and, his subconscious said, it was hurting him too).
“Mairin, Mairin, wake up!” he said in a weirdly high pitched tone, and shook her arm rather hard. She did eventually open her eyes, but looked pretty confused when she saw Alain’s face so close to hers.
“It’s OK, you were just seeing some nightmares,” he tried to reassure her in a quiet voice.
He wiped her sweaty forehead with his hand to check if she had a fever because her eyes were glossy, cheeks worryingly red, and her breathing ragged. Against his cool hand, her skin felt burning hot.
For a moment, Alain didn’t know what to do or say, but then he decided it would be the best to try to calm the girl down, so he stuttered:
“I-I t-think you have gotten ill.” Gee, Alain, way to be a calm and patient doctor, he scolded himself. He saw Chespie observing him with serious eyes, and that helped him to pull himself together.
“But don’t worry, we’ll get you better soon!” he promised.
What now? he thought in his mind. I’ve taken care of sick Pokemon at Sycamore’s lab, but I don’t know how to take care of a young girl…
He felt helpless. During all those months they had been traveling together she had never been ill, and he had been thankful for that. Taking care of a Pokémon and your friend were two very different things in Alain’s opinion.
He didn’t have any medicine with him (he scolded himself again in his mind, because he knew you should always be prepared for these kinds of things when you’re traveling) so he had to check the location of the closest pharmacy from his DexNav (he had thrown his Holocaster away after the team Flare incident, but thankfully Steven had given away this Hoennese device). He figured it luckily wasn’t too far from their whereabouts, but he didn’t want to leave Mairin alone in that condition, so he left his Fennekin and Weavile along with her Chesnaught to keep her company.
“I’ll go get you some medicine for the fever, but I’ll be right back! Please, remember to rest and drink a lot! Fennie and Weavile will stay here with you,” Alain informed Mairin, and left the camp.
While he was walking fast towards his destination, he was wondering why he was acting so weirdly. It was not like him to get so worried about someone being ill. He had been trained for situations like this. He didn’t even notice that his steps were so loud that he scared a lot of wild Pokemon away when he stomped past them.
The sun had risen when he finally reached the pharmacy, and its doors had luckily just been opened so he was able to get the medicine immediately.
When Alain was back at the camp, he found Mairin asleep again. Fennekin had curled next to her and Alain’s Weavile tried to cool Mairin down by blowing an occasional, light Icy Wind outside the tent. He shook her awake, and felt something nasty go through his spine when she looked at him with tired eyes.
“Hey, I’m here with your medicine. Your fever is still high, I think you should take this right away,” he instructed while putting a wet towel on her forehead with his other hand. She took the medicine, and he left her alone to rest, believing that was the best thing he could do at that moment. He checked the tent every once in a while, and brought her a lot of water and some mashed berries when she showed signs of waking up. She didn’t want to take any of them, but with some determination Alain managed to make her eat them.
A couple of days later Alain was sitting on a huge rock with his Fennekin, watching stars, and perhaps remembering the times when he was traveling with just Charizard, who was training elsewhere at that moment. Mairin, who was feeling much better already and whose fever was down, crawled quietly out of her tent and heard Alain talk to his little Pokemon:
“Am I really ready for this, Fennie? To become a Pokemon doctor? If I got so worried about her even though she had a normal flu, how can I treat something that is far more serious? After almost ruining everything, you know... when you weren’t around... I wanted to start healing instead of destroying, but I’m not sure if I’m good enough.”
“Fenn” the fox Pokemon answered, trying to encourage her trainer, and pushed her head against his sleeve.
“I am so relieved to see she’s getting better already. I don’t ever want to see her as miserable as she was when… well, it was a long time ago.”
Mairin thought she shouldn’t interrupt them when Alain was telling his private thoughts to Fennekin, but to her annoyance her clumsiness (which wasn’t as frequent as it had once been) took over just in that moment. She was about to turn back to her tent when she tripped over a tree branch, and fell loudly on the ground. Alain and Fennie turned to see her.
“Are you all right?” Alain smiled a little bit when he saw his friend cringing at herself. This was just like the old times, he thought happily.
“Uh, sure,” the redhead mumbled, her face red of embarrassment, as she shook the dirt off of her clothes.
“So, I overheard you earlier..” she tried to change the topic, “I think you are going to be a great Pokemon doctor. The way you interact with your Pokemon is something pretty special. I can see from everything that you share a strong bond.”
She had a small pause and joked: “After all, you even eat the same food with them.”
“Thank you?” he said, not sure how to take the last part. It was still good to hear her joking; that meant she truly had recovered.
“No, thank you. You were really sweet taking care of me like that. You wouldn’t have had to.”
“Nah, it was nothing. And of course I had to, you are my friend. I’m glad to see you’re fine now.”
Before he had time to react to it in any way, she had gotten closer to him and wrapped her arms around his waist.
“Just accept my gratitude, OK?”
“Wait, have you learned new words? ‘Gratitude’?”
“Alain! I’m not 10 anymore.”
“I know, I know. I was just kidding.”
“Wow, Fennie, did you hear that?” the girl addressed the Pokémon. “That’s some character development. Alain, joking.”
She earned an annoyed look from Alain, but he didn’t break the hug yet. There was something calming about it, in both Alain and Mairin’s opinion.
“Remember the last time we did this? I couldn’t even reach your chin!” Mairin broke the silence cheerfully. Suddenly Alain was awfully aware of the lack of space between them, but he also wondered how this felt so natural. When she had been younger, she had (tried to) hug him quite often, but it had felt different back then. She had been like a sister to him... But that had changed after her return.
Hold on a second. I couldn’t possibly be falling…. no. She’s still so young, Alain thought, ignoring the fact that she was already older than he had been when they had first met, almost an adult.
“Yeah. You have grown quite a bit since.” He patted her head and tried to smile, but he was still a bit confused by his feelings. She pulled off and was now leading him back towards the stone where he had been sitting earlier.
“Come sit with me Alain. I heard the other day that tonight you can see a lot of shooting stars on the sky. And if you see one, you can make a wish.”
“Fine.”
“Can I use your legs as a pillow? Looking at the stars is so much easier if I don’t have to bend my neck like this.” Mairin showed her awkward position and he allowed, though after a bit of hesitation.
There was a minute of silence before she exclaimed: “There, I think I saw one! I wish that whatever our future goals are, we will achieve them. Your turn, Alain.”
“I thought we weren’t supposed to say our wishes aloud or they won’t come true.”
“Oh, OK. Well, say it quietly in your mind then.”
Alain looked at the girl resting her head on his lap. Her slightly longer red hair was untied and formed a beautiful curtain behind her, and he resisted the urge to comb it with his fingers. Her eyes looked healthy and happy, and she had an almost childish gleam in them. She was wearing just a top and night shorts, but somehow this casual look made her even more attractive in his eyes.
“Even if nothing else ever happens, at least she still wants to be my friend..” he thought, thanking his stars. He had almost messed things up beyond reparation once…
“What are you thinking about, Alain?” she asked suddenly.
He couldn’t tell her his true thoughts, not yet, so he just whispered:
“I’m just glad you’re here.”
But when he glanced down at the girl who looked back at him with her signature smile, which he had once been so determined to see, and her shining hazel eyes, he suddenly knew he was a goner. And there was no turning back now.
