4. Most visually beautiful op/ed

I managed to narrow this down to three in the end. I may have gotten distracted along the way but I think these three fit the bill.

This is from 'Spare Me, Great Lord!' which is a donghua I'm probably not going to watch given the few bits and pieces I've heard about it ngl. The opening is so gorgeous though and just a total visual spectacle.

This one has the visuals in reverse and the music backwards and then they switch places, but the entire part with the falling and the reflection breaking and the transitions between the different people??? Also I'm cheating here by adding a bonus but there are alternate visuals for this opening which have this beautiful shot of an hourglass in (I'll rereblog the gifset with it in after this).

I wasn't sure whether to put this one at first because I wasn't sure if I was picking it more for the emotions it evoked rather than the visuals (especially considering it plays pretty fast with chara designs in service of the animation) but I kept it in the end. This is the opening for Heavenly Delusion, a show which I watched part of and had to quit because my tolerance for certain anime tendencies has been entirely lost (tldr; there was some fanservice stuff with teens that made me uncomfortable) and I got spoilt about a few plot points. The mystery aspects of the show itself were super intriguing though, I'll give it that. Anyway, the use of light and "camera" angles (idk the actual term) really elevate the opening for me.

My first impressions of 2023 Fall anime season:

- The first ep of My Daughter Left the Nest and Returned an S-Rank Adventurer was pretty cute and wholesome! As long as it doesn’t turn weird, I like I’ll like this story.

- I really enjoyed the 4-episode premiere of Frieren! There’s something melancholic about starting a story at the end of a journey and I like that we’re following Frieren as she retraces her steps but with a new perspective and a new companion. I’m loving the relationship between Frieren and Fern. Excited to see where the story will go!

- The opening scene of the first episode of The Saint's Magic Power is Omnipotent II gave me the chills! What a way to hook the audience back into the story! The rest of the episode was cute though. It’s nice to see Sei, Albert and the gang again. I’m excited for this new season!

- The first episode of I'm Giving the Disgraced Noble Lady I Rescued a Crash Course in Naughtiness (Ikenaikyo) was so cute!!! It’s a fairly simple story so I can see this being my comfort anime for this season!

- The first episode of The Ancient Magus' Bride S2 Part 2 went by so fast! I’m so happy to return to this story. This part of the College arc is my favorite so I’m excited to see how the anime team will adapt it!

- I really liked the first episode of SHY! A classic hero story but with a shy and introverted girl as the main character? I’m in! I also liked the little twist that happened at the end of the ep! A lot of interesting potential for our hero! Looking forward to more of this story.

- Uma Musume S3 is off to a great start! I loved how each season is focused on different pairs and this time it’s Kitasan Black and Satono Diamond. Can’t wait to see what this season has in store for us!

- The first episode of IM@S Million Live was good! I enjoyed it a lot! I really like Shizuka so far. Mirai reminds me a lot of Kasumi (Bandori) too. I can’t wait to meet all the other characters!

- The first episode of I’m in Love with the Villainess was pretty funny! I loved how unhinged Rae is when it comes to Claire. I just hope the gag won’t be too overused. I’m curious to see where the story will go and how their relationship will develop!

- SPY x FAMILY S2: The long-awaited Bullet-in-Butt date has been animated and it was such a fun episode! I really enjoyed it! I’m so happy that SxF Saturdays are back!

MVPs of this episode goes to Hayamin and the guy who voiced the Red Circus survivor. Hayamin’s range for Yor is fantastic. The pained noises that Yor made really sold the pain that she was in! The Red Circus guy was also very funny! He was so committed haha!

I love how the new SxF S2 opening is so unserious because the story itself is unserious af. Just look at those silly walks lol

How my Saturday evening went:

SpyXFamily: s2 ep5.

Why do I even keep watching it. Everything about the way Yor is written irritates the hell out of me. How can anyone, let alone an assassin be stupid enough not to realize that a women you are sent to protect because all the males in the family were murdered has lost her husband?! *breath in-breath out* Anya-chan is precious and she is the saving grace of this anime, but good lord, her parents. Tasogare is just boring, Yor’s pervert brother is boring AND infuriating. Yor herself - well, I knew I won’t like her from ep1 - is my least favorite thing in the world: a naive and sweet murder machine. I understand the desire to play with opposites, to combine tropes - but it just doesn’t work (yes, it does, it’s one of the top anime for seasons now) - or rather it somehow ticks me personally off in every possible way.

P.S. - I still watch SXF because my husband loves it. And because openings and endings are so great(the latest one is even done my my beloved Masaaki Yuasa!), they keep tricking me into thinking it will get me invested one day.

Then

Kusuria no Hitorigoto: s1 ep5.

My perfect, fantastic, gorgeous child! How can an anime so low on action (and I don’t even mean action as fighting, just plain things happening) be so very engrossing?! I adore the characters, I adore the animation, I adore the funny and the serious - and most of all the ability to dance between the two without sacrificing either drama or comedy.

PS - The point of only pretty women being in danger of r*pe is icky, but I assume that’s not actually what the story intended to say - rather that hiding your natural beauty lessen one’s chances of being assaulted. The very fact the topic is brought up seriously without a shadow of joke means a world to me.

And then

Sousou no Frieren: s1 ep9.

*Mind blown* I thought… I assumed… everyone said it was a QUIET ANIME WHERE YOU JUST WANDER THE LAND AND REMINISCENT ABOUT THE FRIENDS YOU’VE LOST AND SLOWLY LEARN ABOUT YHE WORLD WHY THE HELL AM I LOOKING AT THE BEST ACTION SCENE SINCE THE FINALE OF KINGS RANKING?

And it’s not just that action is great - it is also a great character moment - no! not a moment! - it’s a great character examination. Both our heroes and the devils show off their skill but most importantly they cement the characteristics they were given in prior episodes: Fern and Stark together represent humanity’s ability to use the little time we have on this earth to the fullest potential because humans have so little of it. The pair of demons once again prove what Frieren has said again and again: they can mimic, but they don’t understand. And each character has their own personal story as well. I’ll probably make a separate post about that.

No PS here. Only screams. How can this anime be so pitch perfect? Wow. Woooow. Just wow.

Observations from watching the new eps of Spy x Family and MP100:

The opening and ending for SxF S3 are SO PRETTY. I love them!

PERFECT choices for our good dog's noises. He goes borf!! They did an excellent job there.

Twilight continues to never catch a break in his life.

Fiona made it into the credits! I'm sure she's gloating over that, somewhere.

Mob Psycho did a really good job at bringing everyone back for a new season, working from where they left off in the manga while also compensating for A) the fact they already used half of the first S&S scene to close out S2 and B) the need to reestablish characters and story after a hiatus.

Reigen ran the whole spectrum from "fraud and loser" to "weirdly competent" to "amazing master (who is ALSO growing as a person!)" within a single episode. Love that range.

Mob. KIDDO. I promise you, you do NOT have to have a life plan at fourteen. REALLY.

Gotta say, I love Mezato's approach to life. FASCINATED to know what Miss "took over a cult in middle school because why not" is going to achieve in adulthood.
