Christmas fair (Orthodox Christmas) in the glorious Russian city of Suzdal! Still, it's too beautiful, so I couldn't help but publish these photos.

The Angel of the Lord expels Adam and Eve from Paradise. Scene on the southern gates of the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin. Suzdal. Turn of the 12th-13th centuries. The flowers depicted on the left are an allegory of paradise, guarded by a fiery cherub. The rocks on the right symbolize the earthly world. Ангел Господень изгоняет Адама и Еву из Рая. Сцена на южных вратах со-бора Рождества Богородицы. Суздаль. Рубеж XII—XIII вв. Цветы, изображенные слева, являются аллегорией рая, охраняемого огненным херувимом. Скалы справа символизируют земной мир.

The Angel of the Lord teaches Adam agriculture. Scene on the southern gates of the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin. Suzdal. Turn of the 12th-13th centuries. "Archangel Michael teaches Adam to dig the earth with a spade and to earn his bread by the sweat of his brow." This is what the inscription says in translation from Church Slavonic. This theme is borrowed not from the Bible, but from the apocryphal writing "The Life of Adam and Eve." Ангел Господень обучает Адама земледелию. Сцена на южных вратах собора Рождества Богородицы. Суздаль. Рубеж XII—XIII вв. «Архистратиг Михаил научает Адама рыльцем (заступом) копать землю и в поте лица своего добывать хлеб свой». Так в переводе с церковнославянского гласит надпись. Эта тема заимствована не из Библии, а из апокрифического писания «Жизнь Адама и Евы».

The middle angel is depicted here with a cruciform halo of Christ, which was later, in the mid-16th century, banned at the Moscow Stoglav Council. The three angels are usually interpreted as God the Father, Christ, and the Holy Spirit. Some early exegetes—as well as some works of art created before the end of the 14th century—argued that the text of Genesis speaks of God and two angels serving him. Средний ангел изображен здесь с крестчатым нимбом Христа, что позднее, в середине XVI в., было запрещено на Московском Стоглавом соборе. Обычно три ангела толкуются как Бог-отец, Христос и Дух Святой. Некоторые ранние экзегеты — как, впрочем, и некоторые произведения искусства, созданные до конца XIV в. — доказывали, что в тексте Книги Бытия говорится о Боге и двух прислуживающих ему ангелах.
