Reunion- Fruitful or Disaster?
The dark clouds reflected in the deep magenta eyes of a certain dual haired boy with face painted, as he looked outside the window while sitting on window's broad edge with no emotions on his Face. The World Championships has ended, his Grandfather was hauled away by Cops whom Mr. Dickinson had called, and he learned that his Parents had landed. He scoffed. Parents. His Father who seemingly didn't cared enough, his Mother, who just silently accepted everything. Maybe, maybe this covering the emotions thing was something that went through family.
Its fine, I'm here, ain't I?
He broke out of his reverie as he heard the female voice whisper in his ear, the Flame Empress and the very personification of coming back from dead, his Dranzer, his Phoenix, His Suzaku, whisper in his ear. Smiling mildly for miniscule of second, he held the blue Beyblade to his chest. Once again Tyson was Hero, once again, he lost his Chance to defeat the world Champion. Maybe, next time?
"Kai?" And the same boy had called him. Whipping his head towards the blue haired boy with a scowl on his face, he cocked an eyebrow. "Mr. Dickinson calls you." Ray said from Tyson's side. Kai sighed heavily, he had known the stout man ever since he was Kid, as Mr. Dickinson used to visit his Father, until he was 6, his Father left, and his Grandfather threw him into Abbey. He couldn't deny that man, no matter how hard he tried. He couldn't.
Hopping off the Window edge, Kai joined Tyson and Ray as the three walked out. "Hey Kai, you okay buddy?" Tyson asked, clearly concerned about the older boy. Kai riled Tyson up to the wall, but after the blue haired Boy had saved him from Lake Baikal and readily accepted him back in team, Kai might have softened up a bit to him. "Hn." Kai let out his usual, ignorant grunt, which made Tyson smile.
Dragoon says he is really worried. Well he shouldn't be, though Kai, as he walked beside the two. Soon their soft padding came to an halt when they entered in the floor's lounge area. Kai's eyes keenly took in everyone. Mr. Dickinson sat on a sofa with Tyson's Grandfather, Ryunnosuke or Ryu 'Gramps' Granger sat beside him. Tyson dark haired Father, Tatsuya Granger was on another couch, looking keenly through some files. Hitoshi, or better called Hiro by everyone, Tyson's Archaeologist Brother stood near the window, in a serious conversation over his phone with someone. Then, just then, his eyes fell on someone who made his breath stop.
"I lost again dad!" A little Kai had whined and pouted as his Father laughed fondly and ruffled his hairs.
"Well your Father is working hard, we have to reward him." His Mother's crimson eyes had twinkled with mirth as she looked at his Father.
"Either you chose Hiwatari Enterprises and stay here or chose those Bey spinning tops and get out of my House!" His Grandfather had screamed hoarse, as his crimson eyes trembled with fear, his throat screaming when his Father glanced at him worriedly, and chose Beyblades.
He reached out,
He cried,
He screamed,
He choked on his tears,
But nothing mattered.
His Father didn't turn.
He hadn't realised that while he was staring at his Father in disbelief and many emotions passed through his eyes, Max had noticed him. The blonde's whole frame actually turned relieved, as he chirped. "Kai!!" And broke him out of his reverie. Kai barely had time to recollect himself as Max came hopping to him and hugged him, making Ray and Tyson widen their eyes in alarm. Kai's first instinct was to push him away so hard that he was thrown off into the wall, but he restrained himself. He somehow couldn't bring himself to do that. Especially after what Max had done. No matter how much Kai was being a little shit, no matter how many times he had brushed them off harshly, rebuked them, called them names, and treated them as shit, even betraying them for power... Max, or anyone in that matter, never called him out on it. They let him go, and they accepted him back, as if he was never gone.
Susumu and Misaki, moreover Susumu, tensed when he realised that his son was standing in front of him. After a shocked gasp left Misaki's mouth, followed by a small sob she tried hard to contain. He slowly looked up. Dressed in dark turquoise baggy pants and a fitting tank top, with a scarf tied around his neck that he knew was of Misaki, stood his son. He wasn't the six year old small boy who ran into his arms with his Dranzer, he was now fourteen year old headstrong and stern Captain of World Champion Team Bladebreakers.
Kai looked at his Mother, and his eyes started burning. No. Nah, Nope. Nada. No tears. You can't break down. Somehow managing to tear away his eyes, Kai looked at Mr. Dickinson. "Mr. Dickinson, Ray said you called me?" He asked. Stanley Dickinson had known all the four Boys ever since they were Kids. His keen and experienced eyes penetrated through the mask of 'Everything is fine and I don't need anyone' and looked right into the vulnerability of the boy, who didn't even cared of hiding his emotions. He was glad his Dranzer was back, he was glad that he had friends he knew could rely on (despite his ass not wanting to admit), He was not sure of how to react after seeing his Parents, especially Father, after so long, but most of it, he was exhausted. Tired.
"Well Kai you see, we will need your Help with the Boys from Abbey. My Russian is quiet rough, you see." Blatant Lie. Kai knew the man had perfect Russian.
"If you say so." He said and turned to go. "Kai!" His feet halted when he heard his Father. "You have grown stronger.." He said softly, looking at his son with so much adoration. "Son?" Kai scoffed, his eyes shielded by his hairs. Ray, Tyson, Max, and probably everyone knew that either this will go good, or down the drain hole. "I don't have a Father." He said coldly, and walked out swiftly, closing his eyes when he heard his Mother's sobs. He knew his Friends would come behind, but he didn't cared. He kept walking. He kept walking until he reached a dark hallway and growled, hitting his fist on the wall over and over again, until it bled. "Kai?"
"Ray, please go." He said quietly. But Ray didn't go.
He stayed there, and gently held Kai's shoulder, pressing it as if saying, 'Everything will be fine.'

Mayblade Day #25: Flame
Idk I felt like bullying Kai today or something.
“So let me get this straight…” Takao began as he stared at the scowling man in front of him, who was shivering as the cold misty rain soaked through his cotton shirt.
“You set our apartment on fire,” he finished, peeling off his letterman jacket and throwing it at Kai.
“I did not set the apartment on fire,” Kai ground out through clenched teeth, the sour look on his face intensifying as Takao rolled his eyes in response. He muttered something under his breath as he slipped the discarded jacket on.
“Alright sure, so then why did I get home to find you standing outside at a muster station while the fire department clears the building?” Takao asked, motioning towards the large truck with red flashing lights in the parking lot.
“Anyone could have done that,” Kai said shortly, crossing his arms over his chest.
“So when we’re allowed back inside, I’m not gonna find a saucepan charred to a crisp in the kitchen along with the new countertops and appliances we just got last year?” He asked, raising an eyebrow in inquisition.
Takao watched as Kai opened his mouth to speak before closing it again, his jaw clenching as a red flush began to creep across his face.
“Listen—“ Kai started
“I’m listening,” came Takao’s monotonous reply.
“—I wanted to surprise you,” Kai muttered, almost inaudibly as he turned his head away from Takao to hide the red staining his entire face.
An incredulous smile appeared on Takao’s face as he began to laugh softly at Kai’s quiet admission.
“Well, I am surprised,” Takao teased, watching as Kai’s crossed arms tightened and he looked back in his direction, the scowl reappearing.
“It’s not funny!” Kai bit out, his eyes narrowing as Takao’s laughter increased.
“No, it’s not, do you know how much it’s going to cost to replace the kitchen,” Takao replied, his laughter betraying his words.
Kai refused to humour the other man anymore. He turned around and stalked away from his partner in annoyance.
“Hey!” Takao began, calling after the retreating figure, who slowed his pace so he could hear Takao’s words: “What should I order for dinner since I don’t have a kitchen to cook?”
If looks could kill Takao would be dead from the look Kai gave him over his shoulder before hastening his stride, leaving the other boy to laugh in the parking lot as he hightailed it out of there.
When Takao lost sight of Kai he sighed, shaking his head and pinching the bridge of his nose. This was the second time in a year their apartment had gone up in flames as a result of his boyfriend's culinary skills. And while he appreciated Kai’s rare attempts at gestures of affection.
He was so much more grateful that the apartment complex they lived in was owned by Susumu Hiwatari, and he wasn’t about to be homeless and blacklisted by every property management company in Tokyo.
Now if only Kai would learn that just because he has an affinity to fire, doesn’t mean he can cook. Takao thought with a sigh before heading in the direction of the cat cafe Kai was surely sulking in.
He still needed to know what Kai wanted to order for dinner.

kai is the legal heir to hiwatari enterprises, a dispute between his father & grandfather leading to the former being functionally disowned & thus taken off all contracts & documents that could lead to susumu taking over the company in soichirou's stead ; his custody of kai is the only thing susumu was able to maintain ( though only on paper, as kai never acknowledged this custody beyond not arguing his father's decision to send him to a boarding school, going so far as to refuse to call him "father" ) .
the rights to the seat of ceo are solely kai's, but, as he's currently pre-occupied with, to him, more important things, he's yet to take this seat after soichirou's arrest, & the company is currently directionless & unable to make any big decisions due to the lack of a hiwatari signature, not to mention the intensive investigations it's been enduring from the top down & back up, — as far as kai's concerned, the company can slowly crash & burn for all he cares ; he's in no rush to take over anything connected to his grandfather's legacy. monetary inheritance, as well as the hiwatari mansion, have also gone to kai, though he signed off the estate to his father when he returned to the world of battling, having no intention of going back.

The relationship between Kai and his dad is complicated...least to say. We know that he left Kai and his mom to make a better currier in beyblade (right? Tell me if I am wrong.) Kai was very annoyed about that. But It only took a few fights and tantrums for both of them to make up and hug eachother. Now they absolutely have a normal relationship. Susumu is the cool type of father who quotes memes and jokes all the time. Kai joins him and less to say, he got his father's and mother's humour. Now no-one can keep a straight face when this family is nearby. Even a guy like Robert. They love eachother and hate Voltaire very much.

Let me rant about the bad fathers found in Beyblade (specifically the ones I'm familiar with)
Tumblr media
Susumu Hiwatari (Kai's father)
To put it shortly, Kai's dad is a loser lol
Like, you're an adult and a father. You leave your responsibilities behind and put them on your 12 year old son's shoulders. I get that he wants to do something else instead of bending to his own father's will, but he can't just do that now when he has a son who's still a child!!
Kai doesn't deserve this crap, he should've been able to choose his future endeavors while he was still young. But he was basically put into the position of being the next heir to Hiwatari Enterprises, without much of a choice :/
Overall, he's a pretty bad father, but I think the next two are significantly worse.
Tumblr media
Dr. Zaggart (Zeo/Leon's father)
Okay, Dr. Zaggart is just a piece of shit, I have no remorse for this man.
I'm gonna be talking about what he did in the manga instead of the anime because I just find him so much worse there.
For those who might be confused; in the manga, Dr. Zaggart's son Zeo passes away in an accident. Zaggart eventually finds out that he could use the power of the Sacred Beast's to revive his son.
Here comes the kicker.
In order to do this, he forces his second son Leon into becoming a well-trained blader and basically turns him into a carbon copy of his older brother, even naming him Zeo as well.
This man was so desperate that he basically forced his second child to identify as his older brother which makes no sense to me. Like, say if Dr. Zaggart actually accomplished his goal and revives his deceased son. Where would that leave Leon?
It makes me so mad, honestly. At the end of the arc, Leon forgives his father for what he did him. I understand that there had to be an "all's well that ends well" kind of ending. But really. Leon shouldn't have forgiven his dad.
Tumblr media
Ryusei (Ryo) Hagane (Ginga's father)
This man. THIS MAN. Oh, I have A LOT to say about him.
First of all, fuck this guy! What a horrible excuse for a father
Second, what was going in that big head of his, thinking that it would be okay for him to LIE about his death to his own child? Seriously, Ryusei laughed at the mention of it and Ginga was obviously upset. What, did he think that Ginga would've taken it lightly?
And third, why did he think it was okay to have a third match with Gan Gan Galaxy and Wild Fang, even though a majority of their members were unable to participate? Also, why a tag-team battle? Because surely, Ginga and Kyouya are in perfect condition to fight, huh? EIther he could've made Nile and Masamune battle each other again OR wait till everyone recovers! But no, he is a dummy!
They really thought some irresponsible garbage was good enough to be the director of the WBBA, what a joke.
Out of all the fathers, he pisses me off the most, like he genuinely makes me so mad. I hate how the writers had the decisions he made look okay, it's just not right.

HE HAS A HAPPY FAMILY!!!!
You know, after all these years, after writing and reading so much angst for the Hiwatari’s family, today I discovered he actually has a caring and loving family, and I’m not angry at all, not even if all my fics have been thrown in to the garbage.
I’m not mad at all because just look at that beautiful smile, just look at that happy face, my dear Blader, my dear Kai is happy with his family and after 14 years of thinking that he always suffered because of his family.... I was proven wrong, and tbh there’s no better feeling like this one.
I’m happy for you Kai, waiting 14 years to see your happy face right next to your dad and mom were totally worthy and thank you Aoki Takao for giving us more than the Beybattles that we love!

Misaki Hiwatari
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Y tenemos una referencia de como se ve a todo color en una imagen que Takao Aoki posteo hace años con todos los personajes modo chibis, pero solo dejaré el link.

Just some anime vs. manga thoughts
So I’m beginning the Bakuten Shoot manga for the first time, and so far, I still have a strong favoritism towards a lot of the anime’s elaborations. I love Rei’s level-headed but kind personality in the anime after his first defeat to Tyson/Takao (while in the manga he generally stays the cocky rival trope). I love that it shows Kai has soft spots like for Max and for cats. And I especially love the expansion upon the other characters — whereas the manga heavily centers around Tyson/Takao. The manga is enjoyable in its own way too, but I can’t deny the joy of seeing Max, Rei, and Kai have their own shining moments in the anime.
However, the Bakuten Shoot anime doesn’t explain a lot of things that’d be helpful background while the manga does. Namely, Kai’s backstory (which would explain his initial behavior and the 1st season betrayal more) and the story behind the four bit beasts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Vol. 1, Chapter 4 shown above.
The second especially would solidify so many things, such as how their 4 bit beasts combined in the 1st season are incredibly powerful beyond any means. It would also explain a gap in logic during V-Force — where Team Psychic and the Saint Shields were after the 4 protagonists’ bit beasts. The whole time watching V-Force, I thought to myself “What about the other people’s bit beasts?” “Why are they only going after the Blade Breakers when it’s known that many more bit beasts exist out there?” The fact that the gang’s bit beasts aren’t only incredibly powerful when combined, but has also created their world AND can reshape or destroy it in any form, justifies what seemed like an arbitrary goal by our 2nd season antagonists.
Now, to Kai’s backstory.
There were a lot of times I wished more was done with Kai in regards to the anime. At my first go of the 1st season, my initial reactions were “WOW this is dark” but both the betrayal and redemptions were very sudden. The betrayal made me think Kai seemed like am incredibly cruel character *despite being my all-time favorite — one who would use anyone/thing as a means to an end. He seemed, quite frankly, power-hungry. When the Kai Hiwatari we generally know has limits and doesn’t seem like a person who’d hurt anyone needlessly. I also questioned “Why would Kai just go along with Boris’s manipulation?” when he was shown to be in literal hell all his childhood, sent away to the (very obviously mentally abusive) abbey in Moscow.
And this is where the manga comes in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Vol. 3, Chapter 2 shown above.
The context above makes it apparent the manga Kai is very different from our anime Kai — they do tell a VERY different story after all. However it also explains a lot of things, namely:
Who are Kai’s parents? (Well, one of them at least)
Why he initially formed the Blade Sharks and approached Tyson/Takao
It also depicts that he had a childhood that wasn’t the literal nightmare of an upbringing shown in the anime. But instead, one where he was loved very much by both his grandpa and father — one where he’d feel incentivized to get back or at the bare minimum avenge what we left, had it crumbled to pieces. One that wasn’t necessarily abusive, but still fraught with feelings of loss and abandonment that grew to have a stronghold within present-day Kai.
Soichiro Hiwatari is like your expected stern, head-of-the-household grandfather that placed a lot of responsibilities upon his son and grandson’s shoulders. As being the owner of one of Japan’s largest firms, it’s a strong likelihood that he had to get both future inheritors — Susumu Hiwatari and Kai — to be able to handle the burden of responsibility. It’s implied that Susumu Hiwatari likely dipped because of that pressure, and beyblading was simply either an excuse OR one of the last straws. In the eyes of young Kai however, we see the insecurities start to form. In his perspective, he was likely wondering if his father was actually abandoning him for a game! And so, the resentment start to form along with a deep hole of insecurity.
Now, the Soichiro in the anime (Voltaire, for those who also watched the dub) versus the one in the manga both manipulated Kai’s emotions one way or another. However the anime Soichiro did it to use Kai as a tool — another means to an end — in your usual anime antagonist “I want to rule the world” ways.
The manga Soichiro was shown to have manipulated Kai’s feelings of sadness and insecurity too, but because he cared for his grandson. It’s like good intentions but with a questionable means. He was shown not to be the best with emotions and likely didn’t know how to comfort a now-confused but terribly hurt young child who had just lost his father. So the option? To turn those fragile feelings into rage, to make that sadness a hatred for weakness. And we see it affect Kai enough to take up the sole game he wanted to destroy, form the Blade Sharks, and start again — this time for revenge.
So, what do I do?
Headcanoning.
Yes, you heard right.
Hear me out — I think the best backstory for Kai at this point would be an integration of both the manga backstory and the anime one. One that leads to similar results and stakes as the anime has, but one that also provides some background the manga did in explaining our character’s motives.
Imagine if years back, before the anime’s beginning, Kai’s father left just like that while his grandfather tried to shape Kai up the exact same way. But this time, the good-intentioned Soichiro was consumed by his frustrations and rage. This was where he had met Boris Balkov on a business trip to Moscow, Russia. Boris, wanting to seize the chance of swaying the powerful corporate Hiwatari (what, with the money and influence that comes with the Hiwatari name that could fund their goal for years) initially talked about the bit beasts — seeking to draw Soichiro Hiwatari’s interests. Soichiro dismisses it as nothing more but the musings of a deluded man over the very game he couldn’t stand! That was, until he showed Soichiro some papers he kept on hand documenting the 4 legendary bit beasts who created the world. And Soichiro sees the Dranzer and realizes that’s the dragon on the blade his grandson always carries around!
He decides to entertain Boris’s ideas a little longer. He learns exactly what the bit beasts are capable of during his stay in Russia. And as a result, he starts funding Boris’s orphanage of elite eugenics-era bladers — not realizing exactly how extreme Boris is or that Boris is using him. But rather, hoping he himself can get back a world where his grandson is happy. Being a difficult man, he knows deep down he put much too much pressures on Susumu. But he didn’t expect his son to leave cut and dry (to be fair though, he was the one who issued the ultimatum). He can’t word it, but he is deeply hurt. So he tries to do a bit better for Kai throughout Kai’s own childhood and especially so after his dad is gone. But Soichiro doesn’t have the words to say sorry, and the inability to voice the issues that are really nibbling at his conscience under the cold exterior. The bit beasts combined provides a chance for him to redo his mistakes, reshape a world where his son walked out on him — even if it tears the world at hand apart.
Tumblr media
It’s kinda like this guy. Jkjk, though this IS semi a PokeSpe blog. And I’ll be 100% honest in admitting this is where I got the idea xD
One of the things he does afterwards is send Kai to the orphanage very TEMPORARILY in order to let his grandson see how the project’s going. But it’s mainly for Kai to practice blading with his Dranzer, who Soichiri predicts can be of much use towards getting the other 3 bit beasts despite his initial distaste for either his son or grandson playing the game. And who’s better to use Dranzer than his grandson?
Kai, upon arrival, feels a strong degree of skepticism. But he’s still a very young kid — one who was previously very sheltered from the world growing up in the wealthy Hiwatari household. He doesn’t know yet how Boris treats the other boys at the orphanage, nor does he know how he would be treated either. His grandfather was given obscured information, while Kai was molded into the cold and pensive blader he soon becomes. All the while the facility uses data from the powerful Dranzer blade he holds to build up the Black Dranzer blade. After nearly a year of this, Kai decides to sneak around one night because he has a sneaking suspicion that his blade’s been tampered with. And there he stumbles upon the Black Dranzer, tests it out in awe, and has the traumatic complete wipe out we see him gradually remember in the anime.
Soichiro is angry to hear what’s happened to his grandson, so he decides to bring him home to Japan after the year ends. But be continues to fund the project in the hopes that he’ll get the life he had wished for back, for both him and his grandson’s sake. And this will become what later gives Boris leverage to sway Kai towards using Black Dranzer. It’s incentive to take the other less powerful bit beasts to build up the Black Dranzer and be strong enough to capture his friends’. Boris dangles the idea in front of Kai: “You WILL get your father back AND your revenge.” So it’s not hard to picture why Kai takes up with the idea; it’s not blatantly being power-hungry. But rather, the chance to undo a hurt that couldn’t ever be taken back. And as it follows, it’s also equally easy to see the guilt Kai feels from betraying his friends, and makes the following redemption more believable.
Additional notes:
I’d like to still believe that similarly to the manga, Kai’s father still supports him from the background. But his presence isn’t as commonplace. Enough that he knows his father still cares for him, though never enough to repair the damage the initial walk out has caused.
I’d also like to believe that within my headcanon, Soichiro Hiwatari sweeps under the rug many of the wrongdoings at Boris’s hands and the orphanage for his end goal. He only interferes when Kai gets hurt, like the morally gray character I’d imagine him to be in my twist. He does admit to his crimes at the end though, and rightfully atones. Which is why we do not see his presence later much in the anime — as he’d logically step out of the overbearing stranglehold he’s tried to have over his grandson, in the way he failed to do with Susumu, and let Kai enjoy being the person he’s become. The one who now has friends who support him through this. The one who’s now let go of his resentments and need for revenge — and can finally move on.
But yeah, I’m totally just spinning ideas here.
