Empowering Mexico: Building Sustainable Prosperity Together

  In a significant milestone for Mexico's diplomatic efforts, the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Alicia Bárcena Ibarra, made history as the first head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to attend the main headquarters of the European institutions in the last eight years. During her visit, she participated in key events and meetings that sought to position Mexico's priorities in terms of sustainable investment and strengthen relations with Europe.   Fostering Sustainable Investment At the EU-LAC Business Forum and a meeting with Business Europe, Secretary Bárcena seized the opportunity to highlight Mexico's commitment to sustainable investment projects. She urged European business chambers to invest in Mexico, emphasizing the country's focus on projects such as the Sonora Plan for Sustainable Energies and the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. These initiatives aim to contribute to the development of Mexico's population while fostering sustainable practices and water management.   Prioritizing People's Well-Being Participating in the Progressive Leaders event, Secretary Bárcena reiterated the government's commitment to prioritize the well-being of the most disadvantaged. She emphasized the importance of providing better living conditions, access to basic services, and the free exercise of rights for all citizens. The government's focus on combating corruption and impunity and consolidating the rule of law was also highlighted, reaffirming Mexico's commitment to progressive values under the motto "the poor first."   Building Strong Partnerships Secretary Bárcena engaged in a series of bilateral meetings with over 20 European, Latin American, and Caribbean national delegations. These meetings provided an opportunity to strengthen inter-parliamentary relationships and discuss mutual priorities. Among the key discussions was the urgent approval of the modernized Global Agreement between Mexico and the European Union, fostering cooperation and dialogue to address global challenges.   Championing Migrant Rights Addressing the First Conversation of Mexican Migrant Women in Europe, Secretary Bárcena highlighted the importance of ensuring the participation of Mexican migrants in decision-making processes in the countries where they reside. She stressed the government's commitment to generating more egalitarian and inclusive opportunities for Mexican women worldwide.   Promoting an Alternative Model of Development At the 2023 People's Summit in the European Parliament, Secretary Bárcena joined forces with political and social forces to advocate for an alternative model of development and respectful relations between Latin America, the Caribbean, and Europe. The summit provided a platform to debate current global issues and celebrate the transformative impact of progressive governments in Latin American countries.  
Strengthening Bilateral Collaboration
During her visit, Secretary Bárcena engaged in productive meetings with European leaders, including high representatives of the Union for Foreign Affairs and the Commission. They discussed various aspects of the bilateral relationship, emphasizing the urgency of approving the modernized Global Agreement between Mexico and the European Union.   Facilitating Trade and Investment Meetings with representatives from various countries and financial institutions focused on investment priorities and project portfolios in Mexico. Collaboration in trade facilitation and health regulation was emphasized, fostering stronger economic ties and financial participation from the European Union.
