Amanda Marcotte at Salon:
Even by the reality-TV chaos standards of our political moment, this one was a doozy: Pete Hegseth, Donald Trump's nominee to lead the Department of Defense, called out as an "abuser of women" by his own mother in the pages of the New York Times. To be fair, Penelope Hegseth's 2018 email excoriating her son, who was then a Fox News contributor, was not intended for public consumption. But the email, which seems to have been passed around Hegseth's social circle at the time, was leaked to the Times over the weekend. In it, Penelope Hegseth calls her son a man who "belittles, lies, cheats, sleeps around, and uses women for his own power and ego." Pete Hegseth, then 37 years old, was in the midst of his second divorce.
While Penelope Hegseth has since disavowed her 2018 declaration, those accusations were backed up by a New Yorker investigation showcasing years of complaints from colleagues that Hegseth ran his veterans organization in "a hostile and intimidating working environment," where sexual harassment — and even attempted sexual assault — was blown off or blamed on victims. Hegseth himself was characterized as a heavy drinker who "treated the organization funds like they were a personal expense account — for partying, drinking, and using [the organization's] events as little more than opportunities to ‘hook up’ with women on the road." This follows reports that Hegseth was accused of rape in 2017. Criminal charges were not filed, but Hegseth reportedly reached a financial settlement with the alleged victim in exchange for a non-disclosure agreement.
In the years since, Hegseth — now on his third marriage — has claimed that he rediscovered Christ, saying "faith became real" to him in 2018. He became deeply involved with the Association of Classical Christian Schools (ACCS), moving to Tennessee to enroll his children in a branch of this fundamentalist organization. He also joined the associated denomination, the Communion of Reformed Evangelical Churches. Both are led by Doug Wilson, an untrained and self-proclaimed pastor who advocates for Christian nationalism and has become famous for his trollish promotion of his far-right political views. At the center of Wilson's philosophy is a misogyny so overt that it's sometimes hard to believe he's serious. "Wilson holds the most extreme views of women’s submission found in any form of Christianity," Julie Ingersoll, a professor of religious studies at the University of North Florida, told Salon. "Women are taught that submission to their husbands (and other male authorities) is submission to God. Independence of any kind is cast as sin."
[...] While Wilson is focused on sex and discomforting descriptions of what he sees as women's sexual obligations to men, his demeaning attitudes about women expand beyond the bedroom. In a recent video titled "The Natural Use of the Woman," Wilson argues that God designed women "to make the sandwiches" and chastised women who believe "men have a responsibility" to care about the marriage the same way wives do. During the election season, he argued that women's suffrage was a mistake and part of "a long, sustained war on the family." He recommends that husbands who are dissatisfied with a wife's housework skills "call the elders of the church and ask them for a pastoral visit." Stankorb explained that this implies excommunication, "a serious threat for women who have no job or independent income."
Hegseth doesn't just attend a CREC church and send his kids to an ACCS school. He has associated publicly with Wilson's Christian nationalist teachings in multiple ways. Hegseth is a forceful advocate of the ACCS school system and championed Wilson's efforts to fight pandemic restrictions. After being nominated by Trump, Hegseth went on the "CrossPolitic" podcast, hosted by one of Wilson's pastors, and argued that ACCS schools allow Christian nationalists to "build [their] army underground" for an eventual takeover of American society. Hegseth has blamed sexual assault in the military on "equality," claiming that the issue was "exacerbated" by letting women enlist in the first place. This aligns with CREC teachings that male sexuality is ravenous and the tendency to blame victims for "immodesty" when sexual violence happens. If Hegseth is confirmed to lead the Pentagon, Bell predicted he "would not be worried about rape in military circles," because of these views.
Pete Hegseth’s mother Penelope told him to get some help. Instead, he joined up with Douglas Wilson’s church that is grossly misogynistic and Christian Nationalist.

“Gel manicures are now the most popular beauty treatment in the UK, according to the online booking system Treatwell. Salon chains say that between 70 per cent and 90 per cent of their manicures now involve gels rather than traditional kinds of nail lacquer or false acrylic nails.
Yet dermatologists say they are seeing an “epidemic” of bad reactions to gel. Women have reported nail lifting, brittleness and splitting as well as swollen fingers and infections.
Some people have also suffered eczema, rashes and swelling to the face and body related to using nail gels.”
Full text under cut
As a nail technician, Kirsty Connor had a gel manicure every fortnight — and provided the beauty treatment for about 20 others on any given week.
After years of using gel-based polish, however, she noticed that her nails were lifting away and her fingers were itching.
Later, mini blisters appeared on her hands. Her arms and eyes began to swell. When she struggled to breathe, she called an ambulance.
In A&E, Connor, 31, was told that — like many other women seen by emergency staff — she had developed an allergic reaction to the substances commonly found in gel polishes, which help the colour to harden under an ultraviolet lamp.
Gel manicures are now the most popular beauty treatment in the UK, according to the online booking system Treatwell.
Some people have also suffered eczema, rashes and swelling to the face and body related to using nail gels.
After her severe allergic reaction several years ago, Connor, from Beckenham, southeast London, threw away the collection of 300 gel polishes which she had built up over ten years. She now works with natural, non-toxic polishes.
“The doctors at the hospital said it was quite a common problem. I had been using the big high street brands for years and I had never heard of it so I want to raise awareness,” she said.
Gel polishes typically contain methacrylate chemicals, which can be an irritant and cause allergies. The more often people have gel manicures, the higher the chance they will have a bad reaction or even develop a lifelong allergy.
The chemicals enter the skin when the ultraviolet lamps used to harden each layer of gel are not used for long enough or the equipment is poorly maintained. If the gel is not sufficiently “cured” a reaction to the chemicals can occur on the skin around the nails. Simply brushing your nails against your arms or touching your face can produce symptoms in those areas.
Dr Justine Hextall, a consultant dermatologist and fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, said: “The problem is artificial nails and gel manicures have become the norm. People think of these as a basic requirement for grooming, like brushing your hair, when actually nails aren’t built to sustain this much trauma.
“One of the first questions I ask when I see a patient with facial eczema, especially around the eyes, is whether they get their nails done, if they have gel polish and when they last had them done. We’re always touching our faces, so reaction often shows up here.”
The British Association of Dermatologists said allergies and irritation to the nails is “very likely when people apply a product themselves, or if insufficient training has been given to the nail technician”.
Customers are often unaware that their polish has not been applied correctly while those who buy home kits can fail to follow instructions.
Dr Deirdre Buckley, a consultant dermatologist in Bath, said she believes thousands of women around the country could be suffering with nail polish-related allergies.
She recently saw three women in one day with skin problems, all of which could be linked back to their manicures.
Buckley co-authored a 2018 report by the British Association of Dermatologists which warned that gel polish was causing a “contact allergy epidemic” in the UK.
Since then, she said, the condition has become even more prevalent.
In the past five years, 3.5 per cent of her dermatology patients have tested positive for an allergy to methacrylates. The allergy is almost always due to gel polishes, she said.
“It is so common now that we can usually tell what the problem is when a patient walks into the clinic”, Buckley said.
“I see people with a sort of stripy rash on their cheeks and neck or eyelid swelling because of their fingernails touching their face. They will often have thought very very hard about what could be causing it — their cosmetics, their workplace — but not their nails.”
Traumatic onychoschisis, when the nail starts to detach from the nail bed, is one of the more serious related conditions.
Julia Diogo, a London-based manicurist who specialises in natural nail health and gel nails, and whose clients have included the model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, said she had suffered from the condition herself. She has also worked with women who had previous allergic reactions.
Explaining the right way to carry out a manicure, she said: “Each gel polish brand has an exact curing time which should be adhered to; these are often 30 seconds, 60 seconds or 90 seconds. If you are curing a 90-second gel at 30 seconds this is going to cause either an allergic reaction and/or infection. The top layer may seem dry; however, the middle of that gel will still be wet or tacky, meaning it hasn’t been cured correctly.”
Anyone going for a gel manicure should check that their hands are not removed from the salon lamp before the timer has finished its countdown, she said.
Lamps should be tested regularly, and should be the same brand as the polish because they are designed to cure a specific gel.
There is no single qualification required to be a nail technician but professionals often have either a diploma in manicures, which can take as little as three days, or a beauty apprenticeship.
Some will have a BTec or NVQ in beauty. Nail technicians should ideally have also studied for a certificate with the brand of gel they are using, such as OPI or Shellac, which would tell them how to apply that particular formula.

A debut novel set in contemporary Seoul, Korea, about four young women making their way in a world defined by impossibly high standards of beauty, secret room salons catering to wealthy men, strict social hierarchies, and K-pop fan mania. "Even as a girl, I knew the only chance I had was to change my face... even before a fortune-teller told me so." Kyuri is a beautiful woman with a hard-won job at a "room salon," an exclusive bar where she entertains businessmen while they drink. Though she prides herself on her cold, clear-eyed approach to life, an impulsive mistake with a client may come to threaten her livelihood. Her roomate, Miho, is a talented artist who grew up in an orphanage but won a scholarship to study art in New York. Returning to Korea after college, she finds herself in a precarious relationship with the super-wealthy heir to one of Korea's biggest companies. Down the hall in their apartment building lives Ara, a hair stylist for whom two preoccupations sustain her: obsession with a boy-band pop star, and a best friend who is saving up for the extreme plastic surgery that is commonplace. And Wonna, one floor below, is a newlywed trying to get pregnant with a child that she and her husband have no idea how they can afford to raise and educate in the cutthroat economy. Together, their stories tell a tale that's seemingly unfamiliar, yet unmistakably universal in the way that their tentative friendships may have to be their saving grace.

Fiction Recommendations: Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month
If I Had Your Face by Frances Cha
Kyuri is an achingly beautiful woman with a hard-won job at a Seoul "room salon," an exclusive underground bar where she entertains businessmen while they drink. Though she prides herself on her cold, clear-eyed approach to life, an impulsive mistake threatens her livelihood.
Kyuri's roommate, Miho, is a talented artist who grew up in an orphanage but won a scholarship to study art in New York. Returning to Korea after college, she finds herself in a precarious relationship with the heir to one of the country's biggest conglomerates.
Down the hall in their building lives Ara, a hairstylist whose two preoccupations sustain her: an obsession with a boy-band pop star, and a best friend who is saving up for the extreme plastic surgery that she hopes will change her life.
And Wonna, one floor below, is a newlywed trying to have a baby that she and her husband have no idea how they can afford to raise in Korea's brutal economy.
Together, their stories tell a gripping tale at once unfamiliar and unmistakably universal, in which their tentative friendships may turn out to be the thing that ultimately saves them.
Fiona and Jane by Jean Chen Ho
Best friends since second grade, Fiona Lin and Jane Shen explore the lonely freeways and seedy bars of Los Angeles together through their teenage years, surviving unfulfilling romantic encounters, and carrying with them the scars of their families' tumultuous pasts. Fiona was always destined to leave, her effortless beauty burnished by fierce ambition—qualities that Jane admired and feared in equal measure. When Fiona moves to New York and cares for a sick friend through a breakup with an opportunistic boyfriend, Jane remains in California and grieves her estranged father's sudden death, in the process alienating an overzealous girlfriend. Strained by distance and unintended betrayals, the women float in and out of each other's lives, their friendship both a beacon of home and a reminder of all they've lost.
In stories told in alternating voices, Jean Chen Ho's debut collection peels back the layers of female friendship—the intensity, resentment, and boundless love—to probe the beating hearts of young women coming to terms with themselves, and each other, in light of the insecurities and shame that holds them back.
Things We Lost to the Water by Eric Nguyen
When Huong arrives in New Orleans with her two young sons, she is jobless, homeless, and worried about her husband, Cong, who remains in Vietnam. As she and her boys begin to settle in to life in America, she continues to send letters and tapes back to Cong, hopeful that they will be reunited and her children will grow up with a father.
But with time, Huong realizes she will never see her husband again. While she attempts to come to terms with this loss, her sons, Tuan and Binh, grow up in their absent father's shadow, haunted by a man and a country trapped in their memories and imaginations. As they push forward, the three adapt to life in America in different ways: Huong gets involved with a Vietnamese car salesman who is also new in town; Tuan tries to connect with his heritage by joining a local Vietnamese gang; and Binh, now going by Ben, embraces his adopted homeland and his burgeoning sexuality. Their search for identity--as individuals and as a family--threatens to tear them apart, until disaster strikes the city they now call home and they are suddenly forced to find a new way to come together and honor the ties that bind them.
Natural Beauty by Ling Ling Huang
Our narrator produces a sound from the piano no one else at the Conservatory can. She employs a technique she learned from her parents—also talented musicians—who fled China in the wake of the Cultural Revolution. But when an accident leaves her parents debilitated, she abandons her future for a job at a high-end beauty and wellness store in New York City.
Holistik is known for its remarkable products and procedures—from remoras that suck out cheap Botox to eyelash extensions made of spider silk—and her new job affords her entry into a world of privilege and gives her a long-awaited sense of belonging. She becomes transfixed by Helen, the niece of Holistik’s charismatic owner, and the two strike up a friendship that hazily veers into more. All the while, our narrator is plied with products that slim her thighs, smooth her skin, and lighten her hair. But beneath these creams and tinctures lies something sinister.

Monkey D Luffy is the only wizard PI in the Chicago phonebook.
Luffy's magic is almost entirely around physical augmentation. He's developed a signature technique that lets him stretch his body. He can't explain how he does it, and no-one else has the faintest idea how he's doing it. Luffy has vast stores of mana and willpower but his fine control isn't great. When he gets involved in a case the only things you can be sure of are that he'll win, and that the property damage will be ludicrous.
Zoro is the Knights of the Cross. All three of them (overacheiver). Technically he never gets lost, but only because he never really knows where he is to begin with: he just walks in a direction, gets on any bus or plane that presents itself, and Providence delivers him wherever he's supposed to be. It's not often the destination he had in mind when he set out, but there generally ends up being a fight so it all works out.
Nami is a wizard who never joined the White Council. She's an elementalist with specialties in air and water, and while she doesn't have Luffy's vast reserves of mana her control is a lot more precise. Once she got away from evil wizard Arlong Du Morne's mind control she set to travelling the Never-Never, mapping new pathways and shortcuts through the dream world. When she isn't travelling she lives in the Chicago house her mother left to her. She is deeply involved in the paranormal community, and works hard to protect her people from magical threats. She is Luffy's first phonecall whenever anything happens and does most of the actual detective-ing.
Usopp has six or more side-hustles instead of a regular job, including graphic design, freelance paranormal reporting, and providing endless mechanical repairs for Luffy's clapped-out VW Beetle (the car was originally blue but half the panels have been replaced. There is a bobblehead sheep ornament on the dashboard). He has no innate ability for magic, but he's worked out gadgets that let him use it anyway: goggles to let him see spellcasting, a skateboard that runs on mana dials, a sligshot that fires arcane bullets. He helped Nami upgrade her wand and in return she graciously lets him house-sit for a reduced rate when she's out of town and run a workshop out of her garage (Usopp says he should be paid for watering her plants. Nami claims he's squatting and owes her rent. Usopp says you can't tell tenants to sleep in the garage the one week in four you are home. This argument has been ongoing for serveral years at this point).
Sanji hit a rough patch after he distanced himself from his birth family (again): he ended up crashing on the ratty sofa in Luffy's one-bedroom basement apartment for far too long (thoroughly foiling Usopp's plans to have a regular alternate crashpad for that one week in four). The White Court vampires have backed off for now: Reiju is a lot easier to deal with than Judge, though if anything she's even more dangerous. It's not easy being a semi-reformed incubus, but it's been better since Sanji's started working as a stylist, flitting around beautiful women all day and sustaining himself through the intimacy of the salon. He'd rather be back working as a chef at the Baratie, but as much love as he puts into the food he can't draw nourishment from it. He's slowly starving, but his code won't allow him to feed on unwilling people.
Chopper is a reindeer were-human. He's working as a medical examiner for now because he's just not used to humans enough to pretend to be one full-time. Also, he's too young for living patients to take him seriously just yet. He likes cotton candy and polka music (he does not like being complimented, bastard!).
Robin is The Archive: a magical repository of all human knowledge. The construct resides in a human and is passed down from mother to daughter. Twenty years ago The White Council determined that The Archive presented a threat and assassinated the previous Archive, passing the sum of all human knowledge to an eight-year old. They have hunted Robin ever since in an attempt to finish the job.
Brook is a Spirit of Air and Intellect bound to a real human skull. He is Luffy's tutor in all things arcane. Likes: panties, dirty books, music, the internet. Dislikes: sunlight, ghosts, being bound to a skull. When the situation calls for it Luffy can attatch the skull to a dummy skeleton and Brook can pilot it around like a body. The skeleton is eight feet tall (it was from Home Depot) and he still has a skull for a face, so it's not an everyday thing ("I'll wear an afro wig, a top hat, a purple suit and sunglasses! No-one will notice my face, not that I have a face for them to notice! Yohohoho!"). Luffy always lets him pick the music.
I'm not sure about Franky, Jimbe, Vivi (Summer Lady?) or Yamato, though I have Thoughts about Svartalves, Formorians, and Kincaid.
Luffy is not popular with the Marines White Council of Wizards, but having a powerful grandfather high up in the organisation helps. The old man can't stand politics, but he's strong enough that the others can't just ignore his opinion.
Monkey D Dragon is busy at the Outer Gates.
The Order of the Blackened Denarius is led by Rob Lucci.
Gecko Moria was leading the Black Court vampires but shit has kind of gone sideways for them ever since they went all-in on summoning the Last Titan (whose ass Luffy kicked).
There are no confirmed members of the Black Council, but lbr it's Blackbeard and crew.
Whitebeard is Vadderung, which makes Marco and Ace Valkyries (you're welcome) I guess and Ace could be an Einherjaren but that's less fun
Shanks is the Leansidhe.
Law is Marcone (sorry I don't make the rules). unless Crocodile is Marcone. Hmm, both? Either?
Kaido was the head of the Red Court of Vampires, but good luck finding any of them to ask how that's going. He's also an Actual Dragon sometimes called Ferrovax.
There's an incredibly powerful guy who doesn't have a crew and just hangs out in his big gothic castle by himself: Drakul Mihawk (that's it he's just the same guy, down to adopting the remains of the Black Court).

Unlocking Creativity: A Guide to Hairstyling School
Hairstyling is more than just a profession—it's an art form that combines creativity, technique, and personal connection. Hairstyling schools serve as the launching pad for aspiring stylists, offering them the tools, training, and confidence to shape not only hair but also futures.
What Is Hairstyling School?
Hairstyling school is a specialized educational institution or program designed to teach individuals the art and science of hairstyling. These schools cover a wide range of topics, including cutting, coloring, styling, hair health, and the business aspects of the beauty industry. Graduates typically earn certifications or licenses required to work professionally.
Why Attend Hairstyling School?
Professional Training: Hairstyling schools provide hands-on experience under the guidance of industry professionals. They ensure students are well-versed in techniques and trends.
Licensing Requirements: In most regions, hairstylists must obtain a license to practice, and attending an accredited school is often a prerequisite.
Skill Development: From mastering the perfect cut to achieving flawless balayage, hairstyling school builds a strong foundation of skills.
Career Opportunities: The beauty industry offers a variety of career paths, including working in salons, freelancing, or even starting your own business.
Networking: Students connect with peers, instructors, and industry professionals, creating valuable relationships that can aid in career growth.
What to Expect in Hairstyling School
Hairstyling programs typically combine theoretical knowledge with practical application. Here are some common components of a hairstyling curriculum:
Foundational Knowledge: Anatomy of hair, scalp health, and sanitation practices.
Cutting Techniques: Training in various haircut styles for men, women, and children.
Coloring and Chemical Treatments: Learning about dye applications, highlights, and chemical processes like perms or relaxers.
Styling: Instruction in blow-drying, updos, braiding, and other styling methods.
Business Skills: Marketing, customer service, and salon management basics to prepare students for the business side of hairstyling.
Choosing the Right Hairstyling School
When selecting a hairstyling school, consider the following factors:
Accreditation: Ensure the school is accredited by a recognized body to meet licensing requirements.
Curriculum: Review the courses offered to ensure they align with your career goals.
Hands-On Experience: Look for schools with robust practical training and live client sessions.
Location and Cost: Consider proximity to your home and tuition fees. Scholarships and financial aid options may also be available.
Reputation: Research reviews and success stories from alumni.
The Future of Hairstyling
The beauty industry is ever-evolving, with new trends and technologies shaping the field. Hairstyling schools now incorporate education on sustainable practices, advanced tools, and digital marketing, equipping students to thrive in a competitive and dynamic environment.
Conclusion

5 Effective Therapies for Female Hair Loss for better hair
Loss of HairFor women in particular, hair loss may be a distressing and emotional event. Hormonal imbalances, stress, bad food, genetics, and medical disorders are some of the causes. Fortunately, hair loss can be managed and hair growth encouraged thanks to developments in therapies and treatments. These five efficient treatments can help women manage hair loss and grow stronger, healthier hair. Effective Solutions for Female Remedies
1. Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy
PRP therapy is a contemporary and well-liked hair loss treatment. It includes drawing platelet-rich plasma—rich in growth factors—from your blood. In order to reinforce existing hair, promote hair development, and stimulate hair follicles, this plasma is then injected into the scalp.
How it works: PRP encourages damaged hair follicles to repair and regenerate.
Why it works: Because it uses your blood, there aren't many negative effects, and you can notice improvements in a few months.
PRP therapy is most effective when administered over a period of sessions. For optimal effects, use it with a nutritious diet.
2. Scalp Massage with Essential Oils
A natural and reasonably priced treatment that increases blood flow to hair follicles is scalp massage. It improves the health of hair and encourages growth when mixed with essential oils like peppermint, lavender, or rosemary.
How it works: A light massage with essential oils nourishes the scalp and stimulates hair roots.
Why it works: It has been demonstrated that essential oils can strengthen hair strands and lessen hair loss.
Advice: Add a few drops of essential oil to a carrier oil, such as almond or coconut oil. For optimal effects, massage for ten to fifteen minutes at least twice a week.
3. Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)
Red light is used in low-level laser therapy, a non-invasive procedure, to stimulate hair follicles and promote the growth of new hair. It is an efficient and painless way to lessen hair thinning.
How it works: Hair follicles absorb red light, which enhances energy generation and promotes hair growth.
Why it works: LLLT strengthens weak hair follicles and increases blood flow to the scalp.
Advice: For salon-quality treatments, see a professional or use laser therapy equipment at home, such as laser combs.
4. Nutritional Supplements and Balanced Diet
Hair loss may result from a deficiency in vital nutrients such as protein, iron, zinc, and biotin. Hair health can be significantly enhanced by eating a balanced diet and using supplements to correct deficiencies.
How it works: Vitamins encourage the creation of new hair, while nutrients like iron and biotin sustain the structure of existing hair.
Why it works: Healthy eating strengthens hair from the ground up and stops it from thinning.
Advice: Make sure your regular diet consists of fruits, leafy greens, nuts, eggs, and seafood. Consult a physician before beginning a supplement regimen.
5. Ayurvedic and Herbal Treatments
Bhringraj, amla, and neem are examples of natural compounds used in Ayurvedic therapy to effectively treat hair loss. These herbs have a reputation for being nutritious and for halting the thinning of hair.
How it works: Hair roots are strengthened and scalp inflammation is decreased by using herbal remedies and Ayurvedic oils.
The reason it works: These treatments enhance overall hair quality, encourage natural healing, and don't use any chemicals.
Advice: Once a week, use a hair mask containing amla powder, yogurt, and coconut oil to deeply nourish your hair.
Conclusion
It is not necessary for hair loss to be a lifelong issue. You may take charge of the condition of your hair by using treatments like PRP, laser treatments, scalp massages, and herbal cures. Consistency is key—give your scalp and hair the care they deserve, and over time, you’ll see stronger, healthier, and more beautiful hair.

Human Rights Defence in South Africa: The Story of Siya Hlongwa
Mapping Life Direction and Intent
Education is more than a path to academic achievement; it’s a transformative opportunity to refine one’s skills, foster critical thinking, and cultivate a deeper sense of maturity and purpose. For me, education has been a powerful platform – a means to dream, to envision a world where possibilities are limitless, and to gain the knowledge and training needed to turn those dreams into reality. In my homeland, eMzansi, South Africa, we are still grappling with the profound legacy of apartheid. The apartheid system left deep scars across every aspect of our nation, designed intentionally to exclude and economically paralyze communities outside the white population. Non-white communities were forced into remote, overcrowded townships far from economic hubs, commercial centers, and social services. These “dormitory” settlements were deprived of basic amenities like quality educational facilities, local businesses, and even shopping centers, forcing residents to undertake long, arduous journeys simply to meet their essential needs.
Birth and Upbringing in Umlazi
I was born in eThekwini, previously known as Durban, in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (eMzansi). My early years were shaped under the care of my grandmother in Umlazi, a township initially designated during apartheid as a “Bantu stand.” These areas were designed to segregate people of color, cramming families into two-bedroom houses that could fit within an average white suburban lounge and dining room. Growing up here exposed me to authentic community leadership, often spearheaded by women in solidarity. These women sustained their family units while actively contributing to the wellbeing of their community.
Women as Community Pillars
Women and girls in Umlazi led households, and if unemployed, they created multiple informal businesses. They opened salons, sold goods, and hawked on street corners – anything to support their families. These women exemplified humility and strength, addressing issues such as poverty and illness in the community with urgency and compassion. Their actions reflected a spirit of Ubuntu that left a lasting impression on me.
Lessons in Ubuntu from My Grandmother
My grandmother, a nurse at King Edward Hospital, raised me as a single parent. She later became a matron and leveraged her position to provide healthcare to bedridden neighbors in Umlazi. I often accompanied her after work to deliver medicines and essentials. With any additional income, she would buy groceries for families in need, and I, along with friends, would deliver these supplies. Through her example, I internalized the principle of Ubuntu – not as a theoretical concept but as a way of life.
Educational Journey and Professional Development Studying Architecture at the University of KwaZulu-Natal
Attending the University of KwaZulu-Natal to study Architecture was transformative. Here, I trained rigorously in various design disciplines, including graphic, interior, industrial, and urban design. We explored African architecture and its diversity, honing skills in manual rendering techniques, model making, and using materials like balsa wood to create physical representations of architectural concepts.
This education came with personal sacrifices. My grandmother’s limited pension meant I often camped at university, sleeping on campus from Sunday through Friday. Instant porridge and noodles sustained me, and while I completed my degree in record time, I missed out on a formal graduation due to financial constraints.
Working in Architecture and Development
Over the past decade, I have contributed to designing government housing, hospitals, schools, stadiums, police stations, and correctional facilities. Through these projects, I became proficient in 3D rendering software, such as Revit, and AutoCAD for drafting and design development as well as physical models making of architectural and urban designs.
Pursuing Town and Regional Planning at Wits University
Earning a postgraduate diploma in Town and Regional Planning from Wits University allowed me to integrate my previous architectural training into urban planning solutions. I learned traffic engineering, urban design, stormwater management, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Our field studies took us from South Africa to Mozambique, focusing on creating urban frameworks for communities in crisis.
Master of Science in Development Planning
Completing my MSc in Development Planning at Wits solidified my understanding of urban development at a systemic level. I explored urban philosophy, diverse architectural movements, and conducted research that polished my academic writing and data analysis skills. This foundation led to contributions for international organizations like the UN, under my organization, the Global Development Consortium.
Social Development and Collaboration
Beyond academia, I extended my work into social engineering by partnering with institutions such as Wits University’s Transformation and Employment Equity Office and its Gender Equity Office. Through initiatives like the Safezones program, I facilitated social development focused on equity and safety. I am often invited to share on my 8 years of experience in diversity and inclusion policy making and leadership training as an expert locally and internationally where I reflect on the importance of transformation and gender equity while fostering disability rights access.
Conclusion: Embracing Ubuntu as a Lifelong Principle
Today, the principles of Ubuntu guide my perspective and actions. In a time when kindness is often exploited for social gain, I view compassion as a core value embedded in my DNA. My grandmother’s teachings echo strongly: the time spent on negativity is better invested in creating the future we desire.

A Cut Above: Transforming Hair Trends in 2024
As we move through 2024, hair trends continue to evolve, bringing exciting changes to the way people express themselves through cuts, color, and style. This year, we're witnessing a captivating blend of modern techniques and timeless classics, with barbers and hairstylists embracing creative textures, cuts, and bold colors. Here’s a look at how the industry is transforming and the trends shaping the way people approach their haircuts this year.
The Revival of the Classic Cuts
In 2024, classic cuts are making a powerful comeback, but with a twist. Think of the traditional bob, pixie cut, and the beloved shag—these styles are being reimagined with modern touches, such as asymmetrical cuts, unexpected undercuts, and blended textures. For instance, the bob has been transformed into a "soft bob," where it’s cut to a shorter length, with loose, feathered edges, adding both structure and softness. These variations are particularly popular as they allow for a look that feels both sophisticated and effortless, fitting well with the busy lifestyles of many.
Similarly, the mullet, once relegated to retro fashion, is back in demand, and hairstylists are refining it with modern silhouettes, creating the "mullet fade" for men and "shullet" (a shag and mullet combo) for women. These daring revivals blend edgy appeal with versatility, perfect for those wanting an alternative style.
Personalization and the "Lived-In" Look
More than ever, people are looking to personalize their hairstyles, seeking a look that feels uniquely theirs. Haircutters are rising to the challenge, offering customizations that go beyond typical trends. In 2024, there’s a clear shift towards the "lived-in" look—styles that have a slightly undone, natural feel. Low-maintenance cuts that still appear polished, like the "textured lob" (long bob), give a soft, relaxed finish. This look is achieved by layering and blending textures, resulting in a style that grows out beautifully, requiring fewer visits to the salon for upkeep.
Hairstylists are also leaning into texture variations, with curls, waves, and loose finishes taking center stage. Rather than over-styling, the emphasis is on embracing natural hair texture, whether that’s achieved with specific cutting techniques or minimal styling products. This trend not only celebrates individual style but also simplifies daily routines.
Bold Colors and Hidden Highlights
While cuts are central to hair trends, color remains a powerful way to make a statement. This year, vibrant, saturated colors like teal, lilac, and magenta are popular for those looking to make a bold change. Many people are opting for peek-a-boo highlights—streaks of color that are hidden under the top layer of hair, allowing for a splash of vibrancy that can be shown or hidden depending on the style of the day.
Natural shades are also in demand, with tones inspired by nature, like warm honey, rich copper, and ash brown. These colors add dimension to the hair and blend seamlessly with a person’s natural look, making them versatile and easy to maintain.
Sustainability and Health-Conscious Choices
An increasing number of clients are becoming more environmentally conscious, seeking eco-friendly haircare solutions. Many salons are responding by offering vegan, sulfate-free, and organic products that are kinder to the scalp, hair, and planet. This movement is becoming more than just a trend; it's a shift toward lasting sustainability in the industry.
Moreover, healthy hair is now an essential part of a stylish look. People are prioritizing treatments like hydrating masks, keratin, and scalp care routines to improve the overall health and shine of their hair. Hairstylists are promoting these options as part of a holistic approach, pairing great cuts with recommended care routines that extend the life and vibrancy of the style.
Embracing Individuality
The overarching theme in hair trends for 2024 is individuality. Rather than following a rigid trend, people are exploring styles that reflect who they are, leaning into cuts and colors that celebrate their unique beauty. From refined classics to bold, transformative looks, haircutters are more than stylists—they’re artists helping people express themselves.
This year, hair is more than just a style statement; it’s a journey of self-expression, creativity, and sustainability. Whether it’s a tailored cut, a playful color choice, or a lived-in, effortlessly chic style, 2024’s hair trends are all about celebrating the art of individuality. https://hawkfade.com/
