At home with artist Julie Mehretu
CAMILLE OKHIO - 25 MAR 2021
Julie Mehretu speaks with the joy and conviction of someone who has had the freedom to investigate all their interests. Curiosity has led her to the myriad topics, objects and moments that inform her work, among them cartography, archaeology, the birth of civilisation and mycology. Since the 1990s, her practice has expanded outwardly in all directions like a spider web. A lack of understanding and preconceived notions among reviewers have often led to her work being flattened – simplified so that it is easily digestible – but in reality, her work is far from a simplistic investigation of any one topic. It encompasses multitudes.
The artist’s recent paintings are mostly large scale, but her early works on paper (often created with multiple layers – one sheet of Mylar on top of another) are as small as a six-inch square. The works often comprise innumerable minuscule markings – tremendous force and knowledge communicated through delicate inkings and streaks. Their layers reveal, rather than obfuscate. And though Mehretu’s creative process springs from a desire to understand herself better, the work itself is in no way autobiographical.
Born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on the tails of a continental rejection of colonialism, and raised there, then in Michigan, Mehretu has a flexible and full-hearted understanding of home. It is not one physical place, but many, all holding equal importance. On 25 March, Mehretu will present her first major retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art, with works spanning 1996 to 2019. The institution is an important one for Mehretu, as it played host to several pivotal shows in her youth.
Her exhibition has served as an impetus for Mehretu to look back at her already prolific career, observing and organising the thoughts, questions and answers she has put forth for over two decades. The six years it took to bring this exhibition together proved an incredibly valuable time of reflection, fatefully dovetailing with a year of quarantine.
Wallpaper*: Where are you as we speak?
Julie Mehretu: I’m in my studio on 26th Street, right on the West Side Highway. I’ve worked here for 11 years.
W*: Are there any artists, writers or thinkers that have had a meaningful impact on you?
JM: I don’t know how to answer that because there are literally so many! It’s constantly changing. Right now, Kara Walker, David Hammons, William Pope.L, and younger artists like Jason Moran (who has made amazing work around abstraction). There are so many artists that have been informative and important to me: Frank Bowling, Jack Whitten, Caravaggio.
I also look at a lot of prehistoric work, from as far back as 60,000 years ago, as well as cave paintings from 6th century China and early prehistoric drawings in the caves of Australia.
W*: What’s the most interesting thing you have read, watched or listened to recently?
JM: For the last few weeks I’ve been immersed in Steve McQueen films. I’ve been bingeing on lovers rock music. And a TV show that really moved me was [Michaela Cole’s] I May Destroy You. It’s difficult, but it was really well done and powerful.
Ocean Vuong’s novel On Earth We Are Briefly Gorgeous is amazing. The Mushroom at the End of the World by Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing is a really incredible book too – she studies this mushroom that became a delicacy in Japan in the 7th century. It started growing in deforested areas – it’s in these places destroyed by human beings that these mushrooms survive. [I find it interesting] that this mushroom grows on the edge of precarity and destruction. Like with Black folks, there is a constant aspect of insisting on yourself and reinventing yourself in the midst of constant effort of destruction.
W*: What was the first piece of art you remember seeing? How did you feel about it?
JM: One of the first times I remember being moved by a work of art was looking through my mother’s Rembrandt book. We brought so few things back from Ethiopia and that was one of them. [Particularly] Rembrandt’s The Sacrifice of Isaac. That story is so intense. I was so moved by the light and the skin and the way the paint made light and skin.
W*: Do you travel? If so, what does travel afford you, and what have you missed about it during Covid-19?
JM: I travel a lot, but I haven’t travelled this year. There has been this amazing sense of suspension and a pause in that. I miss travelling, but going to look at art, watching films, reading novels and listening to music is the way I travel now. For instance, I’ve been listening to Afro-Peruvian music and now I want to go to Peru.
Before I know it we will be back in this fast-paced, zooming-around environment – there is something I want to savour by staying here, now, in this time and absorbing as much as I can.
W*: You are said to have a vast collection of objects and images. Walk me through your collection – what areas, materials, makers and things have the largest presence and why?
JM: When you enter our home there is this long hallway. Framed along the wall we have around 20 fluorescent Daniel Joseph Martinez block-printed posters he made with words – almost poems. Our kids grew up reading those. One says ‘Sometimes I can’t breathe’ and another one says ‘Don’t work’, while some are really long.
We also have a great Paul Pfeiffer photograph of one from the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse series. We have a group of Richard Tuttle etchings right over our dining table. We have an amazing David Hammons body print as well, and my kids’ work is all over the house.
W*: As the daughter of immigrants and an immigrant yourself – how do you conceptualise home and how do you create it?
JM: There were a lot of times I felt very transient – as a student and a young adult, going in and out of school and residency programmes. It always came back to music and food. There are certain flavours, foods, music, smells that you take wherever you go. Also as a mother, I’m building a home for my children. Home becomes something else because of them. They are the core of home now.
W* How has motherhood affected your practice?
JM: I became much more productive when I had kids for several reasons – one is that I felt a lot of pressure to make [work] in the time I wasn’t with them, which of course is unsustainable. A large part of making is not making – thinking and searching.
When I got to work I could get into it much more quickly. Kids grow and change so fast, you feel time is passing so you need to use it. I wasn’t going to stop working, that’s for sure. All women who are pushing in their lives make that choice.
W*: What is your favourite myth and why does it hold importance for you?
JM: Right now I’m reading Greek myths to my ten-year-old. We’ve read them before, but he wanted to read them again. I still read to him at night even though he’s a voracious reader himself.
The myths I remember the most are myths I’ve come across in visual works. Titian’s Diana and Actaeon – I know that myth so well because of his painting. Bernini’s mesmerising sculpture of Apollo and Daphne I saw in Rome, where her body becomes a tree. The leaves are so delicately carved into the marble, it’s a work of incredible beauty. I’ve been considering this deconstructionist approach to mythology. Storytelling becomes this place to interrogate propositions, which is what I think mythology does.
W*: Have you experienced a flattening of your work?
JM: I’m always concerned with flattening and pigeonholing. That is something that happens to artists like us all the time. When I first was working and showing there was a bit of that happening with my work. It was put into the space of cartography or an architectural analysis of it. It was said to be autobiographical work.
The art world tries to consume. There is this desire to flatten and the desire for Black artists to be a reflection of their experience. I don’t think any artist is like that at all. In reality, none of us are flat. We all contain multitudes and are complicated – that has always been the core of the Black radical tradition.

Growing usage of carrageenan gum in processed food as thickener, protein stabilizer, particle suspension and emulsifying the agent is predominantly fueling market growth. It is used in ice creams, dairy-based products, salad dressings, sour cream, and chocolate milk. Furthermore, it is also used across food applications such as beverages, confectioneries, and bakery products. Therefore, the growing consumption of carrageenan gum in various processed foods is anticipated to propel the overall market growth of carrageenan gum.

Figure 1. Global Carrageenan gum Market, Revenue Share (%), By Region, 2018
Market Restraints
Growing usage of carrageenan as a food ingredient in various food items and rising concerns regarding the risk of inflammation and colon cancer in humans is a major factor hindering the demand for carrageenan gum, thereby hampering the market growth of carrageenan gum. According to the Coherent Market Insights analysis, in November 2016, The National Organic Standard Boards voted to remove carrageenan from the national list of allowed substances in organic food. Therefore, the aforementioned factor is restricting market growth.
Availability of cheaper substitute such as agar to replace carrageenan as it has excellent gelling properties owing to the presence of highly soluble fiber content is hindering the market growth of carrageenan gum. Moreover, agar powder is an excellent vegan gelling agent which makes it ideal for making gelatin-based desserts. Therefore, the availability of cheaper substitute for carrageenan gum is hampering the market growth.
Market Opportunities
Growing application of Carrageenan Gum in infant’s formula is expected to offer potential growth opportunity to the market of carrageenan gum over the forecast timeframe. Growing urban population, along with improving consumer lifestyle are some of the major factors propelling the market growth of carrageenan-based infant formula products. This is expected to foster market growth. For instance, in June 2015, the Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives released a technical report regarding the safety of carrageenan in infant formula.
Rising demand for personal care products especially in Asia Pacific region is expected to create lots of opportunities for the market of carrageenan gum. Huge demand for personal care products and organic cosmetics products is expected to increase the sales of carrageenan gum ingredients, which in turn augmenting the market growth of carrageenan gum. Therefore, the growing demand for organic personal care products are anticipated to foster market growth over the forecast timeframe.

Unsolicited Review of “Rebulto”: Sculpting Mental Health Awareness in Theater
Madrigal, once again, made his point artistically louder and palatably relevant in his latest screenplay “Rebulto”, still bearing his unique writing and directing style with an unconventional yet familiar manner of teaching valuable life lessons similarly present in his earlier works such as “Si Dr. Kwago, Si Kosmeng Kuba at ang Mamaw” and “Ward 13”.
Adamson University’s Tinik ng Teatro, in its 10th season, premiered Rebulto in the Adamson Theater with two shows booked for the whole afternoon of March 18, 2019. The one-hour and half cocktail of all possible modes of expressiveness-slash-monologue-type back-reading of a life-thread centers on the life of Lion, a sculptor on the verge of retirement and is on full-mode preparing for his much-awaited final exhibit. His lifelong interest in sculpture has grown over the years, and at this time, he is on his final showcase which includes his last sculpture named Thea, which he has been working on enthusiastically and lovingly.
The play starts with a serious-toned interpretative choreography only to be cut-off with a funny intro, paving a reassuring note that this isn’t a typical play, rather an unconventional and modern one which deemed as a strategy to make the younger audience tuned in and interested. The long paragraph below would be an attempt to summarize everything I have witnessed before providing the hopeful criticism of it.
The flow of the story, as Lion reminisces his past, showed his childhood with a dysfunctional family – a loving mother who had a past of ballooned depression and a drunkard father who can be tagged as “nakakarimarim” or despicable (you’ll find out why later in this essay).
His interest in the human body and the influence of his mother to Greek studies inspired him to pursue the art of sculpture but in some way had affected him to act femininely which was apparent in how he plays with dolls, and this motivated his father, coming home one night heavily intoxicated and angry, to sexually abuse him at such young age.
Living in an inharmonious home with his mother being subjected to verbal and physical abuse, Lion opted to live normally, still pursuing his interest in sculpture, but self-harmed himself at times when he cannot carry through with his memories of abuse from his father. His mother, upon learning this and what his father did to him, tried to handle what has happened to her family unsuccessfully – mounting to a regressive depression and overdosing while his father ran off to escape such accusation only to be killed off in the streets in what can be assumed a result of his substance abuse (and by substance, and by assuming, it has something to do with the local war on substance, ehem, drugs, or so why would he be running all over the place and get shot down from nowhere, right?).
With all these, Lion still went through victoriously and kept living his life, following suit with his early adulthood years. Lion’s youth, which depicts common phases of friendship and love, has awarded him this time with both aspects happier and wonderful, unlike his childhood struggle, only to end up being betrayed by both friend and lover. Failing to find a similar envisioned future with the love of his life - Ersa and being rejected and left behind for an unclear reason as he proposed for them to get married, Lion gets accidentally hit as he mindlessly crossed the road, providing an explanation to why the reminiscing older Lion had a cane, limping as he told his story to the crowd.
Bearing a train of pains and gaining depression from his younger years, which is by the way can be assumed hereditary due to his mother’s condition, frustrated and hopeless Lion was further put into more anguish upon learning that Ersa’s rejection was caused by her unknown affair with none other than Lion’s childhood best friend Hamil. This anguish awakened the only sturdy and reliable thing in his life – his sculpture Thea – magnificent and dainty in her casted movement and being. Understanding that Lion’s anguish is unbearable already, Thea stood out to give Lion the refuge he needs and reaches out to him warmly, encouraging him to take revenge at the world by giving up and quitting the unfair life he is living.
Hinting the climax of Lion’s battle with himself, another interpretative choreography was rendered by the cast featuring an exhausted and confused Lion being influenced by an antagonizing Thea. The dance seemed to be Lion’s sanity battle, staging an internal fight to keep on breathing or take flight, away from all his despair, and into the loving embrace of Thea which signified Thea’s encouraged choice, a choice to end his life. Stage black.
And for its finale, an unexpected twist of event – or rather, mindset – portrayed Lion’s triumphant final exhibit show with an emcee about to reveal the much-awaited final sculpture created by Lion. Upon the taking off of the cloth covering his final piece, the expected lone-standing beautiful Thea was turned into a couple sculpture showing Thea embracing a self-sculpture of Lion, symbolized by his cane, both with smiling faces. This take off was ended with Lion coming out of the stage to give his ending remarks, in which he provided his imaginary audience with a brief backgrounder on his final piece – the very symbol of his victory against the battle he had with himself – bottling the event with his encouraging words to “speak up, seek help, keep on.”
Lion was able to overcome his depression. His pursuit to finish his final masterpiece passed by hand in hand with his journey through the series of downfalls in his life which all ended up in a happy note – a finished sculpture equal to an end of his own struggles.
Still, it had very specific scenes which were dark and deep and, as cautioned prior its beginning, can be triggering for certain people or would seem inappropriate. But the way the cast had carried such scenes were remarkable enough, balancing its darkness but easiness of being performed on stage. Masked with Greek-influenced theme and mix of current trends, overall, Rebulto tried to give its audience an easy-to-digest sandwich tackling the darker side of mental health.
But it was too easy, as an audience, to watch Lion’s time of struggling to his time of overcoming - - - with him ending the show with words of encouragement to the audience of his exhibit vis-à-vis the actual audience of the Madrigal’s play. Lion’s story might have tried to sell the “this-too-shall-pass” concept – that no matter how dark a person’s past has been better days will still come just as long as he or she chooses to not give up. The story’s resounding ending lesson of retaining a positive outlook in life is good and helpful, and could even be linked to Pygmalion Effect, perhaps, because generally, having better expectations also aid in actually achieving better situations. The fast-paced scenes from Lion and Thea’s thrilling dance-off, a quick lights off, and then a sudden happy twist of Lion still keeping up and breathing can be deemed exciting and supportive of the perceived general message of the play that life will still be good. And of course, going back to the essence of the play to still remain amusing to the crowd because of the slight plot twist, these scenes were necessary. For a normal viewer, this brought out the element of thrill and suspense because we really can’t tell if Lion’s going to let Thea totally win over and give up or if not. Fortunately, he didn’t. But for some who might still be dwelling in their dark days, it would have been more helpful if the play showed clear-cut solutions that could possibly help strike out the stigma on mental health. Offering an actual or visible portrayal of time-based solutions on overcoming depression, a possibly step-by-step guide or available solutions some of us could take, such as engaging with a mental health professional, bravely joining support groups, observing proper food intake and sleep, doing mindfulness activities or even doing recreational and even creative activities – like how Lion immersed himself with creating sculpture – a clearer picture showing that these things are doable, would have been beneficial for viewers, especially those with still limited knowledge on mental health or general psychology, to clearly understand how one can really win over mental health problems.
The play also touched issues on child-rearing and showed how critical it is to parent a child; after all, a damaged childhood is usually the root why people are experiencing mental health problems. Partly, it was a saddening realization that both Lion’s parents had horrible effects in the course of his lifetime and their part in the play had unpleasant endings. Rebulto, also, subtly communicated how the younger generation treats relationships – with the heightened trend of fearing commitment, tendencies of false love that also leads to infidelity, and how friendships are overtaken by self-serving decisions – and God, how we hope these aren’t true but all these are happening in our current society, and specifically, among the youth. And what’s greatly compromised is everyone’s mental health. Here we see how parenting should be taken seriously and that we should actually start working together for preventive measures. (*again, I shout with my typing, “moral recovery!”)
Largely, Rebulto was worthy to watch and I hope it could be shown again with larger crowds that can witness it, just as how much I would want to re-watch the rest of Madrigal’s earlier works. For someone who’s not directly practicing psychology-related tasks, the play, other than being a delight, also served as a breather and refresher on suppressed issues about mental health. With how the world is rushing all of us now, it’s always a good option to take a step back and relearn things – even the most basic ones we can consider – such as talking out with friends, doing things we like regardless if it seems uninteresting to others, being kind, being optimistic – and to remember that there’s always help available if we also make ourselves available to help ourselves and others.
And just as Lion’s positivity drew out overflowing-ly in the end of the play, may we also find ourselves the same, hopeful for what’s better ahead and fearless in speaking out, seeking help and keeping on.
Still, I would like to express my awe and appreciation to the cast, director, writer and the technical people behind this play. Mind you, these people are college ones yet they have performed exceedingly and surely has made the play’s impact felt by the audience. Long live AdU’s Tinik ng Teatro!

The YouTube Pedophile Problem: Is YouTube Adpocalypse Part II Upon Us?
For the latest authoritative social media and influencer marketing news, trends, and statistics, subscribe to our industry digest newsletter!
What Is The YouTube Pedophile Controversy?
The Lowdown:
Mainstream awareness of videos featuring young children, sexualized by congregations of predators viewing and commenting on them in plain sight, caused a furor among the YouTube and larger media community.
Major brands like Nestlé, AT&T, Disney, and Epic Games boycotted YouTube by pulling advertisements from the platform.
YouTube responded with a series of drastic measures aimed at fixing and preventing the recently exposed YouTube pedophile scandal.
YouTube creators have had mixed and charged reactions, with many fearing the resurgence of a YouTube Adpocalypse.
The Timeline:
youtube
February 17, 2019 - Matt Watson uploaded a video investigating the comments of pedophiles on videos of children.
February 20, 2019 - YouTube initially responded by disabling comments on millions of videos, terminating channels of users who left inappropriate comments, and reporting offenders to law enforcement.
February 22, 2019 - YouTube said that any videos featuring kids that received offensive or predatory comments could be demonetized while also introducing a new algorithm that would be more effective in deleting those comments.
February 28, 2019 - YouTube further escalated its response by stating they’d automatically disable comments on videos featuring children under 18 years of age.
March 1, 2019 - YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki explained that the mass suspension of comments on videos of minors is a trade-off for young creators as YouTube prioritizes child safety.
How Was The YouTube Pedophile Ad Scandal Exposed?
A Single Video Exposing The YouTube Pedophile Ring Caught Like Wildfire
youtube
The issue of pedophiles sexualizing content on YouTube has been around for some time. Back in June 2018, a popular French YouTuber highlighted this in a video which failed to disseminate its message into the mainstream.
Most recently, Matt Watson, a relatively small-time YouTuber with 32,000 subscribers, uploaded a video that went viral on YouTube and became an explosive Reddit thread. In the span of three days, the video was watched 1.75 million times (it currently sits at over 3 million hits), while his Reddit post is currently the 21st highest-voted thread in the site’s history.
Encouraged by Watson, the hashtag #YouTubeWakeUp began trending as a social media campaign against YouTube in the wake of his video.
Lots of eyes were on this one.
Mainstream Press Got Wind Of The YouTube Pedophile Controversy
Just three days later, Wired ran an article detailing their own investigation on the same topic, while major publications began reporting on it too. The issue quickly became the “talk of the town” across the media landscape.
The issue of YouTube pedophiles using the platform is bad enough. What’s worse is that there have been countless examples of videos with pedophile comments being monetized, some by innocent uploaders of videos—others by pedophiles using their channel as a hub to share re-uploaded content featuring young girls.
In the end, the grossly prevalent nature of videos plagued by pedophilia raised immense concern across online communities, leading YouTube and many of its advertisers to take immediate action.
What Companies Have Been Impacted By The YouTube Pedophile Problem?
YouTube Pedophiles Are A Huge Blemish On Brand Safety
Many of the monetized videos making use of Google’s AdSense program promoted pre-roll advertisements from the likes of Disney, L’Oreal, Peloton, Grammarly, Fortnite, and other brand advertisers while YouTube pedophile comments ravaged the comments section.
Some brands and advertisers have sought to distance themselves from YouTube following the objectionable revelations. Needless to say, any association with child exploitation or pedophiles is hugely damaging to brand image, more so for brands with a large presence in the public eye, and particularly for child-friendly brands like Disney and Hasbro.
Advertisers Line YouTube Up In The Crosshairs
Almost immediately in the wake of the scandal, brands started boycotting YouTube and stopped ad buying with Google’s AdSense. Disney, Nestlé, AT&T, GNC, Epic Games, McDonald’s, and many more announced they had pulled the plug on YouTube advertising.
This is especially significant considering the tantalizingly high ROI that YouTube offers brands. By deserting YouTube, companies risk losing out on the platform’s phenomenal reach and marketing potential.
For many brands, however, it’s a sacrifice they’re more than willing to take, especially with YouTube already having been caught up in a similar controversy in late 2017—known as YouTube Adpocalypse—again, the result of an investigation by a major publication.
With advertisers already burned, it hasn’t taken much to abandon YouTube en masse again.
How Did YouTube Respond To The Exposure Of YouTube Pedophiles?
YouTube’s pedophile issue isn’t the first time a YouTube ad scandal has reared its head. In 2017, advertisers grew skittish of their ads appearing alongside extremist videos. In 2018, advertisers grew wary of YouTube advertising when popular influencer Logan Paul posted a highly controversial video that YouTube subsequently took too long to address and penalize.
This time around, YouTube acted a little quicker with the instinctive action to start issuing wholesale bans. The timing was poor, as YouTube has just announced an update dealing with a separate controversy regarding copyright striking in the community in a bid to assuage creators.
YouTube ultimately took the following steps to improve child safety and eliminate the YouTube pedophile problem:
Disabled comments on tens of millions of videos featuring minors.
Terminated over 400 channels.
Reported comments deemed illegal to the authorities.
Launched a new comments classifier to identify and remove predatory comments.
Took deliberate action on creators whose content or actions endanger children.
The process to prevent another “Adpocalypse” and reassure advertisers and users appears to be top-of-mind for YouTube.
How Are Influencers Affected By The YouTube Pedophile Scandal?
YouTube Creators Are Concerned About Their Livelihood
With brands finally coming to the realization that YouTube is not immune to brand safety threats, many are doing a cost-benefit analysis of advertising on the platform—many have decided to withdraw from AdSense.
This, of course, hits creators hardest. Scarred by the last Adpocalypse in 2017, which saw some creators lose as much as 80% of their revenue generated from ads, YouTube creators are rightfully worried about the implications of brands departing again.
I’m not reporting the story because it negatively affects the whole YouTube community. We don’t need another ad apocalypse. What I have done behind the scenes though is reached out to my YouTube contacts showing them the video & my team is showing them content to take down. https://t.co/IsMmfXwACK
— KEEM 🍿 (@KEEMSTAR) February 18, 2019
Some of YouTube’s biggest stars have noted their discomfort with the scandal and the results of YouTube’s response, which many see as a method to appease brands at the expense of creators.
YouTube recently had to backtrack on its move to start demonetizing videos which had “inappropriate comments,” as it caused dismay among influencers—many of whom have had perfectly innocent videos demonetized as a result.
Regarding the @TeamYouTube tweet that has the community freaking out right now.
I reached out to YT. Don’t have an official statement yet, but 1. It sounds like this isn’t policy for every video on YT and 2. It’s likely comment disabling will be preferred over demonetization. pic.twitter.com/q7dpuztDxq
— Philip DeFranco (@PhillyD) February 22, 2019
The panic and confusion in the creator community in light of YouTube’s cleanup efforts is palpable.
What Are The Challenges Of Moderating Content On Social Networks?
YouTube’s Tug Of War With Its Creators And Content
YouTube has spent several years trying to ‘clean up’ their hosted content in order to make it more palatable to advertisers. Being associated with pedophiles could be a hammer blow to brand image.
Google understands perfectly well that the prosperity of YouTube lives and dies by advertising. So much so is this the driving factor that they’ve dictated the content guidelines for its creators with the intent of making the platform as advertiser-friendly as humanly possible—to the chagrin of many.
This particular issue has been a thorn in YouTube’s side as the platform has battled child predators for a while now. Demonetization policies intended to clamp down on harmful content have struggled to contain the issue, and monitoring the 1 billion hours of video watched every day by users is a near impossible task.
What Does This Mean For YouTube Influencer Marketing?
YouTube Creators Will Go Where Money Flows
It’s a difficult situation for creators. Many are justifiably concerned that the YouTube pedophile issue is stirring up a second Adpocalypse. Effectively, YouTube is casting its demonetization net wider than ever before to show users they're serious about protecting children—they’re also proving that YouTube brand safety is at the forefront too.
After the last Adpocalypse, many influencers turned to other revenue streams such as merchandise and Patreon as an alternative to relying solely on Google’s AdSense. In light of Matt Watson’s move to hold YouTube accountable and encourage brands and creators to boycott, YouTubers don’t think that will solve the issue—it’ll only hurt their livelihood.
Will top YouTube creators search for other viable channels? Probably not—most will likely stick around without experiencing consequences of the YouTube Adpocalypse Part II, but some may decide to take action based on principle alone.
Brands Will Prioritize Brand Safety On YouTube
Most major brands have responded as expected in the initial aftermath. Many have taken their ad dollars away from Google until sufficient changes are made that ensure brand safety, even if it means sacrificing ROI from YouTube advertising.
It’s perfectly reasonable for brands to demand premium security when advertising on YouTube, and those who have pulled ads will likely return as they have in the past once the worst blows over.
Some media buyers in the industry remain unconcerned by the scandal, viewing it as nothing more than a temporary pause while YouTube proactively responds.
Bottom Line—The YouTube Pedophile Scandal Has Awakened The Need To Protect Children
YouTube’s pedophile controversy isn’t over yet, but YouTube has sought to patch up the sore spots by taking both immediate and calculated actions. YouTube is on a constant quest to assure advertisers, creators, and users of its integrity despite the presence of criminal and offensive activity lurking on its platform.
Departed advertisers will return, sooner or later, and creators will take it or leave it.
While the incident will (hopefully) mean the end of YouTube pedophiles, it doesn’t necessarily mean major brands will permanently abandon YouTube advertising or that creators will deactivate their channels indefinitely. If so, these moves will only register as blips in 2019 YouTube trends.
If anything, the YouTube pedophile controversy serves as another reminder that when brands execute influencer marketing campaigns, they must ensure brand safety.

Press Release:
Galerie Chantal Crousel is pleased to present Mona Hatoum’s 7th solo exhibition, from October 12 to December 21, 2019.
New sculptures, installations, and works on paper are presented.
Mona Hatoum’s art reflects on world conflicts, migrations, and surveillance, using materials as varied as steel, brick, concrete, and human hair, in order to create spaces of tension, paradox, and ambiguity. The motif of the grid and the sphere serve as metaphors for confinement, oppression, and destruction.
The artist articulates these issues through the use of abstraction and poetic Realism which enables her to reach a certain universality and become one of the most influential figures of her generation, as well as a role model for many contemporary artists.
From the point of creation to the placement of the work in the space, Mona Hatoum focuses her attention on the viewer’s body and on the precise moment when he or she encounters the work. Mingling the theme of everyday life with that of global instability, the artist creates a feeling of discomfort. Due to the familiarity of the forms and the poetics of the materials, Mona Hatoum’s works are attractive and irrepressibly lure the eye. Our attention is however disrupted when we approach the work as it reveals harsher and more precarious characteristics than is expected. Consider Remains (chair) V, a piece of furniture reduced to its ghostly charred remains, held together by wire mesh. This chair, a shadow of its former self, no longer suggests a refuge or comforting interior, but points to an alarming and disturbing situation.
The desire of the artist to combine geopolitical problematics with esthetical considerations leads to major works such as Concrete Mobile, Orbital II or Hot Spot (stand).
Hot Spot (stand) is a metal globe, wrapped in neon tube emitting a mesmerizing glowing red light. When approaching the work, one feels a sensation of heat and hears an unfamiliar electric buzz. Emblematic of Mona Hatoum’s work, the geographical map is here presented as a statement for a world embroiled in conflict and a territory in flux. For Orbital II, Mona Hatoum uses materials borrowed from the construction industry: the curved steel rebar forms a globe punctuated by clumps of concrete that also look like orbiting planets. Concrete Mobile is composed of the same elements this time suspended overhead. The precarious suspension of the concrete blocks suggests the erosion of a building that was once solid, down to a skeleton of fragments. Mona Hatoum produces a metaphor of a fragile world that is in a permanent state of destruction, while providing the key to a possible reconstruction. A Pile of Bricks also uses building materials. It consists of a pile of bricks that resemble a mobile architectural model and suggests a partially collapsed building with a caved-in façade.
The spatial relationships created by Mona Hatoum between those powerful works and the visitor generates a genuine visceral experience.
The grid is another theme explored in this exhibition. It initially became a recurring theme because of her interest in Minimalism and geometry. But the grid pattern has gradually evolved into a reference to real-life situations related to confinement. In a serial approach, Mona Hatoum repeats the motif in drawings on parchment paper entitled Drawing Heat. She produces a freehand drawing with a hot metal rod creating a form by removing material from the surface of the paper. For untitled (bed springs) I & II, an organic grid shape emerges. These lithographs were produced by using bedsprings, removed from the frame and applied directly to the stone, creating a variation on the classical form of the regular, geometric grid – which then seems to evaporate and evoke a possible liberation.
The body is the starting point for much of the artist’s commentary on the state of the world. However, it may also be the object. Since early days, Mona Hatoum explored the interiority of the body, often revealing its deepest intimacy. With some humor, while still seeking to elicit contradictory emotions, the artist once again uses the sphere in the work entitled Inside Out (concrete), whose surface pattern is reminiscent of the meanderings of the digestive system. In other sculptures, the artist incorporates materials discarded from her own body: a necklace made out of her own fingernails is displayed on a wooden bust (Nail Necklace) and for Silver Ball, rolled hair forms a large ball that is placed on a pedestal like a precious object. Other small works on paper created with hair punctuate the exhibition and encourage proximity between the artist and the visitor.
Lastly, SP Atelier extends an invitation to enter a wholly different sort of privacy, that of the artist’s studio. Mona Hatoum displays a set of drawings, photographs, embroideries, and other objects, collected during her residency in São Paulo in 2014. The elements that make up this installation are samples or preparatory sketches for pieces that emerged in São Paulo and were later presented in the exhibition that concluded the residency. The piece takes us behind the scenes of an artistic practice developing outside any fixed studio location, drawing sustenance from local materials and know-how.
As Clarrie Wallis wrote, “[Mona Hatoum] is highly sophisticated in her manipulation of materials and their metaphorical potential and, […] it is in her interface between these that the work’s meaning resides.”` The visitor’s space is filled with tensions between form and content, medium and thought, latent poetry thus resulting, constitutes the strength of the artist’s work.
In 2019, Mona Hatoum has been awarded the Praemium Imperiale prize for Sculpture, submitted by Japan Art Association, the most historical cultural foundation in Japan.
She was presented with a number of other prizes during her career, such as the 10th Hiroshima Art Prize by Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art (2017), Joan Miró Prize of the Fundació Joan Miró (2011), Honorary Doctorate from the University of Southampton (2010), or Roswitha Haftmann Stiftung Prize (2004) among others.
In 2015, her exhibition at the Centre Pompidou Paris travelled to Tate London, then to the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma in Helsinki (2016).
Her work has been shown in several solo exhibitions, in institutions such as the Menil Collection, Houston, U.S.A. (2017) that toured to Pulitzer Arts Foundation in St Louis, U.S.A. (2018); Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art, Japan (2017); Fundación PROA, Buenos Aires, Argentina (2015); Pinacoteca do Estado, São Paulo, Brazil (2014); Museum of Fine Arts, Ghent, Belgium (2014); Arab Museum of Modern Art, Doha, Qatar (2014); Kunstmuseum St-Gallen, Switzerland (2013); Arter, Istanbul, Turkey (2012); Juan Miro Fundacion, Barcelona, Spain (2012); Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing, China (2009); Fondazione Querini Stampalia, Venice, Italy (2009); Museum of contemporary art, Sydney, Australia (2005); Hamburger Kunsthalle, Hamburg, Germany (2004), Kunstmuseum Bonn, Germany (2004), Magasin III, Stockholm, Sweden (2004); Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Oaxaca, Mexico (2003); Centro de Arte de Salamanca, Spain (2002).

Micronized Pea Protein Market size and Key Trends in terms of volume and value 2019 – 2027
Evolving trends, such as gluten-free, non-allergen, non-dairy, and clean label have induced a shift in consumer behavior. A noticeable shift towards healthy food products that offer functional benefits has been witnessed in the recent years. The shift in consumer behavior has benefitted many industries; micronized protein industry is no exception. Among the various types of micronized pea proteins available in the market, demand for pea proteins has been especially noticeable.
Micronized pea proteins meet the need for low calorie content, and are easy to digest and suitable for vegans. The demand for plant-based proteins has been on the rise, with an increasing number of population cutting down or cutting out meat and becoming flexitarian, meat reducers, and semi-vegetarians.

Micronized pea protein is one of the recent advances in the plant-based proteins space, which is suitable for plant-based diets, high-protein beverages, snacks, and sports nutrition. Relatively small particle size of micronized pea protein aids food processors in binding, gelling, emulsifying, enhanced nutrition, while maintaining the bioavailability of the proteins. Growing application of micronized plant-based proteins, especially in vegan protein shakes beverages on the back of their cleaner flavor, smoother mouthfeel, and better suspension is likely to influence the growth of micronized pea protein market.
Rapid consumer inclination towards vegetarianism and veganism due to rising concerns regarding the negative impact of meat consumption on environment has led to surge in the demand for plant-based proteins. With growing popularity of pea protein as ingredient in range of health-centric food and beverages, ingredient suppliers are exploring innovative delivery forms of these proteins including isolates, concentrates, micronized, and others that help increase their uptake as well as improve convenience and ease-of-use.

The micronized pea protein market is expected to witness a steady growth in the future with an increase in use of proteins in food applications both for nutritional reason and food technologies such as water binding, emulsification, particle suspension, aeration, and others. Gradual rise in the demand for micronized pea protein can also be attributed to its fine particle size that helps provide essential amino acid profile. Moreover, growth in the health-conscious population willing to invest in food products that offer added nutritional value is likely to create opportunities for stakeholders.
Micronized pea proteins are becoming a big thing in sport nutrition and weight management, owing to their low calorie and high protein content. Increasing demand and popularity of these products will remain crucial to how this market will evolve in the future. In addition, the food & beverage industry is focusing on adoption of micronized pea protein as an important ingredient for gluten free bakery products, cereals, snack bars, extruded snacks, ice creams, and other desserts. For instance, in March 2018, ice cream producer McConnell’s introduced its first dairy-free frozen dessert made from a proprietary blend of 100% of micronized pea protein.

Mint Statistics: Stronger first-quarter bullion sales for 2019 vs. 2018
With the first quarter drawing to a close, we thought it would be interesting to take a look at sales in the first quarter to 2019 as compared to the same time period in 2018. The first thing to stand out is the underperformance of the 2019 gold proof as compared with 2019.
Overall, total sales of all options offered are down about 3,500 coins, or 26%. Gold Buffalos had not yet been released last year at this time, so obviously the Mint is ahead there. Bullion Eagle sales are up year over year, with platinum up 3,500, gold up 10,500, and silver slightly behind last March, primarily due to the Mint’s recent suspension of sales. Total bullion sales for 2019 vs. 2018 are up 42% at this time last year.
Of note this week, the 2019 ten-coin clad proof set increased by 11,204 from last week. Other increases of note include an increase of 2,127 on 2019-W proof silver Eagles, 1,827 more Apollo 11 .999 silver dollar proofs, and 717 of the 2019 Rocketship set.
American Legion Commemorative coin sales continue to increase but at a slower pace than expected. Total sales of all issues increased by 9,472, with the proof silver dollar accounting for 4,440 of those sales.
