“I’ve got a head full of chemicals; mouth full of ridicule.”
Day No: 24
Prompt: "I thought they were with you."
Fandom: Murdoch Mysteries
Medium: fic
Trigger Warnings: none
SFW
Julia Ogden waded through the crowd, trying to find her family. The chaos worried her, but as soon as she saw her husband, a little bit of her fear started lowering. She saw Harry. “Where’s Susannah?” she demanded.
He looked startled. “I thought you had her,” he said.
“What do you mean?”
He looked around, wondering if some other soul picked her up. “I thought I heard you say you were closer to her, so you would grab her and meet us here.”
Her blood chilled. “William, I was never near you to even talk.” The two paused for five seconds before setting off. Harry was directed to stand near Higgins while they went back inside.
With the crowd rushing out, it was hard to get to the area where they had been. They did, eventually, get to the area where the young toddler would have been. Only her blanket was found, with no sign of the new matron. Until William saw a leg sticking out from behind a table. It was their brand new matron, already murdered not even three weeks in. “Throat was slit,” he informed, crossing himself before standing up.
This was one of her worst nightmares.
“Not again, not again,” she muttered.
“Julia,” William reached out. She shook her head. This was not happening again. Her daughter was not kidnapped again after the last time.
Someone spinning her around and placing something in her arms was completely unexpected, and it took her a few seconds to realize her daughter was gently patting her face and babbling. “Susannah!”
“Her and Jordan managed to get under a table and eat a fair bit of someone’s cake,” their savior informed. Watts was holding the other young girl, who looked a bit put out at not being allowed near the food on the floor. “It might have been mine, I lost it during the first scream.”
Murdoch rubbed the small back of his child, also purposely grazing his wife. "Did you manage to see anything?" he questioned.
Watts shook his head. "Not much. The scream was likely to separate certain children from their parents. A couple of the constables and myself have been reuniting them. Jordan and Susannah were the last ones."
"Certain children?" Julia picked up on.
"Law enforcement. Most were the children of police officers." That sent a chill down the couple's backs, combining with their previous fear. "I did manage to knock someone out while trying to get to the girls."
Murdoch straightened his back, ready to set himself on a warpath. Watts recognized it and set the little girl on the ground. Julia took the other little girl's hand before she could get to any of the food on the floor. The two men headed deeper in the building.

I just keep thinking about Murdoch and his conversation with the man who's wife died because she was so desperate to keep talking to her son through the psychics
Like, Murdoch's sister has been dead for years now, and he's probably desperate to talk to her sometimes - just one more conversation. He knows that can't happen, he's logical and scientific. But he knows how comforting it might be, just look at his face after he finds it all out. Murdoch is so full of empathy, and so full of righteous anger at people who will take advantage of grief for money
Just love him so much and Yannick portrayed him beautifully as he always does

Some thoughts about the Murdoch Mysteries Musical (Mild Spoilers)
I loved it, the whole thing, even when they weren't singing. It could have been a pretty compelling mystery all on its own
Everyone did a much better job at singing than I would have expected but Helene Joy stole the freaking show
The duet with Watts and Miss Hart might be my favourite song in the episode. Not only do their voices work so damn well together but it's such a beautiful, compelling melody
I love the notion of both Yannick and Murdoch not being super enthusiastic about the singing but then coming around to it. Murdoch and Julia's song about seeing each other in Susannah was so touching and well written
Although I would have been fine without it, I think it was smart to give a logical explanation as to why Murdoch is hearing all the singing. I imagine it made it way less silly for the more reluctant viewers
No spoilers, but having THAT villain come back was super unexpected and I genuinely didn't see it coming. I liked that he got a song too
The lighting, camerawork, dance choreography, etc. everything just worked so well!! It felt like the cast and crew were giving even more effort than usual. The entire episode looked and sounded fantastic.
I don't know what else to say besides WHAT TOOK THEM SO LONG??

I hope they do one more season for two reasons. 1. I need more Watts, him not even being mentioned in the season finale killed me and if that ends up being the end of the show I'm going to cry about it forever. 2. I need them to do a titanic episode so. Like I need them to do one. I need to see how they would make it relevant to the main characters
(NGL my first thought upon seeing that Julia is actually moving to London was "this is they're setting up for a titanic episode" (which is perhaps a bit morbid but I don't think they'd actually have any characters actually die I think it would just be chaotic))
I think they will have at least another season. PM is notorious for wanting to provide extravagant / intense finales (even tho he often misses the mark) this finale despite the cliffhanger did not have the signature PM trademark imo. I hope when the series does come to an end we do get a worth-wild finish. Expecting another 2 parter finale finish.
To respond to your reasons:
1. YES I NEED MORE WATTS AS WELL. I said this in my previous ask but I would love the series to end with him getting some sort of promotion or higher status within Station House 4.
2. According to messages on the Murdoch FB fan page - doesn’t sound like PM is interested in doing another Titanic episode (see S07E01). My thought is maybe they’ll do a subplot where William hears of the ship sinking and believes Julia & Susannah are on the titanic resulting in some worry due to the lack of communication. Would be fun tho but they’ve already done the episode to an extent - also like you said they def cannot kill of Julia like that!

Hello ace! Do you have any murdoch mysteries fic recs?
Hi! Yeah I've got a few for you! This is a mix of Murdoch whump, Watts whump, and George whump.
The Butterfly Effect by JeannieMac Summary: A brief (very brief!) episode tag for "Murdochophobia" (7.06). William, Julia, the butterflies.
Life in the Balance by meridian_rose (meridianrose) Summary: AU set during 11x09, "The Talking Dead". Agnes succeeds in poisoning Watts, leaving him fighting for his life and George beside himself with worry.
Bloodlust II by Voltaire63 Summary: A figure from Murdoch's past turns up to stalk the detective.
Side Window by Voltaire63 Summary: While recuperating, Murdoch witnesses something he was not meant to see.
The Rest of Our Lives by Voltaire63 Summary: An alternate view of Julia telling William about the threat from Gillies, after 714.
Going Forward by Voltaire63 Summary: One shot. Next scene in Last Train To Kingston, 709.
As I was losing him - Murdoch Ahoy by Natmuread Summary: Julia's point of view of William drowning in Murdoch Ahoy (season 7). Don't read if you haven't seen that episode. ONE SHOT.
Trials & Tribulations by Sask Summary: Set after the end of Season 6 - James Gillies' trial approaches, but on the way to the court house Detective Murdoch is abducted. Can Gillies be behind it, even from behind bars?

Home Again Soon by TheLastSaskDragonRider Summary: Watts is kidnapped. (takes place between season 13/14, no season 14 spoilers)
It's Not Time by GoodMorningMoon Summary: Spoilers from 16x11, "D.O.A." (the black and white film noir episode). Missing scenes as Murdoch recovers from a nasty poison.
we're going down (six underground) by fluffier432 Summary: It had been a number of days already (George had lost count just how many), and he was no closer to escaping the clutch of his kidnapper. Maybe slightly, if his healing foot counted, but that wouldn’t be much use if he couldn’t unlock the front door to run away. Even if he could pick the lock, there would be no time before Amelia caught up to him, and that would only be if he could get past her in the first place. She had him seated at the desk, not tied down as she believed his foot still could not bear his weight (and it nearly couldn’t), as she lay on the bed between him and the bedroom door. Nobody had come to rescue him yet, which felt out of character for the quick-acting Murdoch. He supposed perhaps they hadn’t even discovered he was missing at all; he was on a book tour, after all, it’s not like his absence at work would be considered unusual. Whumptober 2022 Day 5: Blood Loss/Running Out Of Air/Hypothermia
S-O-S by Horatio13 Summary: He was pinned in a pretty tight pocket, but not tight enough that it was impossible to breathe. Uncomfortably difficult, yes, but definitely possible. His ears were ringing. Something sharp was stabbing in his thigh. He couldn’t feel his fingers on his right hand, but he couldn’t see enough of them to figure out what the problem was. He could feel something wet and sticky starting to pool underneath his legs and stomach. Well, thought George numbly. This is fun.
Whumping the Bugalugs Series by Horatio13 Summary: Slaps the top of George's helmet This bad boy can fit SO much pain!
The Lady and the Arrow by GoodMorningMoon Summary: A crossbow bolt to the gut is quite a blow no matter how fit you are. Murdoch recovers from the events of 1x11, "Bad Medicine."
Steady On by GoodMorningMoon Summary: After the ambush at the church, only a select few know George Crabtree is still alive. Cross-posted to ff.net.
Out of the Woods by GoodMorningMoon Summary: Filling a gap in S8E11, "All That Glitters." How did George get a wounded Murdoch home from Haileybury?
The Lady and the Arrow by GoodMorningMoon Summary: A crossbow bolt to the gut is quite a blow no matter how fit you are. Murdoch recovers from the events of 1x11, "Bad Medicine."
Mr. Crabtree's Insistence by GoodMorningMoon Summary: Missing scene from (and spoilers for) 15x22, "Sweet Amelia." Effie seeks help for George after a deeply traumatic experience.

The apartment that Ogden drove him to wasn’t completely without his touch. William Murdoch remembered starting the day back in 1899, before George accidentally hit him and somehow sent him into a future unlike what he would have thought. Julia a narcotics undercover officer instead of the Doctor she was destined to be. George Crabtree beyond his constable days, but not without a cost. He wasn’t the happier version of himself. His personality was jaded. Murdoch hated that he came out like that in the current time.
Small bits of art and pictures lined one of the walls. His eyes immediately found familiar, yet different faces. Liza and himself, it must have been right after he proposed. There was an engagement ring on her finger. He likely saved up for months to give that to her. A few more with the two. He then found one with himself and Liza standing behind a smiling, even younger Llewellyn with bright lights behind them. Oh, how that was surprising. Even in this time, they became his guardians. He figured there would be family that they weren’t able to contact in the previous time before that would have taken him. Or Miss Marks yet again. Then, he saw a picture of all of the Marks family and realized that something had happened again to pull him away. A copy of custody paperwork was framed next to that picture and one of the young man’s graduation. As last time, she had perished before he reached that milestone, and he was instead holding one of her pictures in her place.
There was one with him and Jasper, surprisingly. He must have met him more neutrally than the previous time. One with him and Susannah, which looked to be when she discovered her sickness. Although, the part that lived in this time told him that she got herself treated and was still Mother Superior over the other women. There was one of his family when they were younger and a little more happy. He had forgotten how his mother looked.
Breaking off from the memories that threatened grief, he looked around the rest of the room. The couch was hideous, but it reminded him of the one that they had brought to the room prior. A small table in front of it, and a television in front of that. Oh, if Tesla could only see it, how flat and large it was. Turning it on using a button on the bottom of it, he found colour instead of the black and white they barely managed to make work. He turned it back off again, not wanting to see whatever was being shown.
At least, he could tell that the current version of himself and his original had some of the same hobbies. There was something being broken down on a table. Tools were carefully lined up on a towel, but they weren’t put away. Curious, he shrugged off his jacket and sat it aside before sitting down and poking at it. An hour went into two hours before someone started placing warm things near his hand. A mug filled with tea, some sort of soup, a mixture of vegetables and pork.
He looked up to see a Llewellyn that he was not prepared for. A less stressed, more carefree, version of the man he was used to dealing with, in clothes that he looked much more relaxed in, with glasses that were barely on. A part of his original version was the constable life, and the events he had been through, but he didn’t see any sign of that right now. He wondered what he was doing instead of his path last time. “You didn’t answer your phone,” he criticized, “And you were completely absorbed in the screening device that I was able to walk in the apartment, make your tea, turn on Degrassi, which you hate, and stare at you for several minutes before I got hungry and got out the Chinese.”
William turned to the TV and there was a show with teeners, and the boy on there looked incredibly familiar to him. He grimaced at it before reaching for what had to be a remote and changed it. There was a person talking about a celebrity. Changed it again and it was people in a bar. He kept going to Llewellyn’s amusement until he found something with a brightly coloured frog. “Not in the mood for gossip today,” he said. Hunger starting to reveal itself, he took a sip of the tea and found it to be something he was unfamiliar with. It was, however, good, with a sweet flavor that he thought was expensive. “So, what have you been doing today?”
He shrugged, getting out his own food. The soup he chose was different, as was his meal. Something with egg, he assumed. “Mostly studying. Finals are coming up and I want to pass so I don’t have to sink any more in for this degree,” Llewellyn said, “I wasn’t working today, so mostly just at the library for everything I could get my hands on.”
The detective nodded. He hoped that he would be right on what he was planning. He was going to have to search the apartment for everything he could find out about this William Murdoch. Was it wrong he hoped there was a diary of sorts? “After getting the degree for German, you’re going to expand your Russian?” The soup, a strange red one, was being gulped down. He flatly stared until Llewellyn put it down. “Did you forget to eat again?”
“I ate,” he protested.
“You also had lunch?” he asked. There was a finger to stop him from adding more, but it folded once he started thinking about it. “That’s what I thought. Two soft pretzels in between breakfast and now isn’t enough for you.”
It was an old complaint that rolled in his ears and was swallowed with the soup. There was much chomping before he could continue. “Bachelor’s in Russian, then working on dual Mandarin and Cantonese before hitting Korean, but I don’t think I need a bachelor’s in that. Mainly an associates, a fair amount of people can translate Korean easily. There’s a couple of others I want to look into.”
“What about Arabic, or Farsi?” Oh, where had those languages come from? He knew of maybe one person that practiced Islam during his time at Station House 4, and they spoke English with a mere tinged accent. Nothing in their native tongue, he found out. His first thought had been French, as he thought it was still somewhat highly used among the population. At least among Quebec and the outer lands.
A shake of the head. “I take those, I’m going to get Intelligence and Military recruitment on me,” he said, “They already were persuading several of the people in foreign language programs to switch to Arabic, at least. I heard rumors about a couple of others that are gaining attention. I think even my Russian associates got some interest.”
What would Russian be getting interest for? He didn’t like that. Terrence Meyers floated in his head. “Find something safer. French is still needed.”
He shook his head. “Oh, no, no no no. After hearing you whisper things to Liza, I am still scarred,” he said.
“After hearing…” He frowned, as that had not been one of the languages he said he knew, and turned to the young man. “You know French already?!”
He smiled to deflect. “Since primary.”
Murdoch growled, which was a warning sign as Watts jumped back before he was caught in a headlock. “Get back here!”

June of Doom 2023: Day 30
Word Count: 584
Warnings: Post-traumatic stress disorder, past buried alive, captivity, claustrophobia, panic attacks, brief mention of post-partum depression
Fandom: Murdoch Mysteries
Pairings: William Murdoch x Julia Ogden
I know that I dropped the ball with all of the other prompts, but when I saw what Day 30 it, it fit so perfectly with what I had in mind for this little snippet that I came up with after watching the Season 16 finale of Murdoch Mysteries.
Enjoy!
————————
The last thing that Julia Ogden remembered as she awoke with a gasp was this shock going through her very core, like she had been struck with a bolt of lightning.
No... she could still remembering the voice of Mathilda Crisp threatening her and William... and possibly Susannah.
An entire crime orchestrated-- a man's death fabricated.
And... Mathilda and her father needed her and William for... for something.
Julia's head whipped towards William-- he seemed to have been awake for quite some time before her.
"Where are we?" she asked.
"I don't know," William answered in a shaky voice-- something that she hadn't heard since Frank Rhodes had poisoned him.
The first thing that Julia noticed about where they were was that it was small. Wooden.
Like a coffin.
She thought that she could feel it jerk the both of them around.
"Are we moving?"
Julia moved to her feet on her trembling legs.
Memories of darkness and burning lungs hit her like she was kicked in the chest.
No... no, this can't be happening again! Please, God, don't let this happen again!
Julia couldn't stop herself from beginning to scream and pounding at the walls enclosing her and her husband. "HELP! HELP!"
Strong, callused hands carefully grasped her forearm. Her chest, already tight as a drum, clenched further into her heart with fear before she heard a familiar voice.
"Julia."
The voice of someone that, in the span of a few seconds, she had forgotten was there.
"Julia," William gently urged as she turned to face him. "Save your strength. My guess is whoever put us in here doesn't care much to help us."
"HELP! WILLIAM, HELP! HELP!"
Her lungs were burning and her heart was racing against her chest even as it pressed against it like a mechanical vise. Her stomach was churning violently, like choppy sea waters during a violent storm.
Her eyes began to burn as well, as she thought of Susannah...
She wasn't even a year old yet...
"Will-- William..." she choked out. "I-- I can't breathe..."
She knew what this was.
It had happened to her before, all throughout her life. But it hadn't been until she was treating a patient for postpartum depression that she realized that she wasn't the only one.
It didn't help her feel like any less of a burden for it.
"Julia... Julia, I need you to look at me..."
William.
She looked back up into his face.
It was amazing how much time had passed, she thought in an attempt to try to distract herself.
Sixteen years, eight of them married.
She looked into his soft, amber brown eyes, noticing the slight wrinkles around them that again reminded her of the passage of time.
"Just take a breath?" he instructed. "Just breathe..."
Julia took a deep inhale through her nose, exhaling through her mouth.
"Good... again..."
She repeated William's instructions, beginning to feel her heartbeat slowing back down. Her chest still felt tight and her stomach was still churning. As the tears that formed in her eyes finally escaped down her face, she thought that she could feel the circles forming under her eyes as she leaned against William.
His strong arms wrapped around her waist, rubbing her back soothingly with one hand and the other reaching up to stroke her hair.
"We'll figure out how to escape," he promised. "And we'll get back to Susannah."
Julia took another deep breath. "I... I hope."
No, she amended in her mind. We will.
