Susan Catherine Moore Waters (USA, 1823â1900) Untitled (Squirrels in a Chestnut Tree), c.1875â80 Oil on canvas, 16 Ă 20 in (40.6 Ă 50.8 cm) Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York 2023.629
âWaters began her career in 1843 as an itinerant portrait painter, but abandoned the medium in the 1850s, turning instead to photography, including ambrotypes and daguerreotypes. She returned to painting in the late 1860s, focusing on still lifes, landscapes, and animal pictures. Watersâ career was revitalized in 1876, when she exhibited Still LifeâMallard Ducks (location unknown) in the Centennial International Exhibition, Americaâs first major worldâs fair, held in Philadelphia. The fair was said to bring "her fame. . .far beyond expectation, causing a continuous receipt of orders impossible to fill." This dynamic animal painting, which features three American red squirrels set against the foliage of an American chestnut tree, was likely painted in the aftermath of the Centennial. The work reveals Watersâ mature, naturalistic style in its careful delineation of a variety of texturesâfrom the spiky husks of the chestnut pods to the thick, multi-colored fur of the squirrelsâ tails.â

1823 July, Mon. 28
8 50/60
11 1/2
See the last line of yesterday. Masturbation at twelve thinking of Tib. Slept uncomfortably and awoke at two and alas masturbation again, having just had a rigmarole dream of being in bed with Miss Lloyd of York, Miss Susan L[loyd]âs sister, and of pretending to be asleep while I had been grubbling her, she liking it exceedingly â
Disturbed rest from a little after 2 to 4 then awoke with a pretty severe bilious pain in my stomach â Tossed and tumbled about â Sick but not enough to give me much relief â Heard every clock struck â Merely dozed a little â Had been much heated and perhaps throwing the quilt off had brought on the pain â I had felt too suddenly cold, and pulled the clothes on again â
1/4 hour in the stable speaking to Charles Howarth â 3 pages very kind letter from Mrs. Norcliffe Langton â (the ends from Marianne Dalton to say she will write soon) â Mrs. Nâ [Norcliffe] is glad she can give me âa tent-bedâ at the festival a room to myself âthoâ not too large and a most hearty welcomeâ â The party Mrs. Nâ [Norcliffe] I[sabella] N[orcliffe] and Charlotte and the 3 oldest girls from Croft â
No quarrel between Dr. Camidge and Greatorex â Speaking of Miss Fawkes, âone has often heard of âwedding haste,â but seldom sun such an instance as Miss Fawkesâs â A letter from York says they had met very often in town, but my information from Scarbroâ says, and that from a near relative, they had only met once, and that at dinner at her uncle Brandlings â Proposals the day following, and post haste down to York to learn his fate â Papa objected as too slight an acquaintance but the young lady was determined and lucky, for it is for her that he is a most worthy man, thoâ so would think âtoo much oldâ â
Went down to breakfast at 9 55/60 â Very bilious â Would not have got up but wished to go to Hâx [Halifax] to see Marian etc. At 11 1/2 took George in the gig, and drove to Northgate â Marian well again or nearly so â Sat with her 10 minutes â
Called at Whitleyâs, Mrs. Nâ [Norcliffe]âs Shakespeare gallery not arrived â The prints to be bound in 2 volumes 31/6 each volume â The gig waited at Mr. Bansonâs door whole I walked a little with Mrs. Râ [Rawson] of Stony Royde â Called on Mrs. William Rawson and Mrs. Saltmarshe, not admitted â Sat above 1/2 hour with Mrs. Stansfield Râ [Rawson] and her daughter Catherine â Called on Mrs. C[hristopher] Saltmarshe and Mrs. Catherine Râ [Rawson] who is staying with her, not admitted â
Called again at Northgate to speak to Thomas Greenwood about a black gig horse price 50 guineas to be bought of Illingworth of the anchor public house â The horse to come here at 4 this afternoon â Thomas had heard from several and Sugden, the horse breaker, said he used to see George galloping and tashing the horses thro the town and on the moor last winter, and people said we must have a very bad groo[m] at Shibden Hall. Thomas did not wish to injure any poor man, any servant, but our horses had looked like ketall this year. I said I would not bring his name into the business â
Ushered in Miss Elizabeth Prescott at Northgate, staid a few minutes and got home at 1 50/60 â My aunt and I sauntered down the lane into the hay fields â I told her the black mare had gone lame this morning â and I should send for Blamire this afternoon (George rode her yesterday to Huddersfield to see his friends at Lascelles hall) â She never went lame before â Did not hint at what I had heard, but said as I have often said before, I was dissatisfied with George as a groom and much wished my uncle would let me hire one myself and have him entirely of my own ordering, them perhaps we might have our horses as we ought to have â
Came upstairs at 2 10/60 â Wrote all the above of today â Read from page 104 to 211 Dr. Parisâs Pharmacologia. Blamire came at 6, the black mareâs off fore-foot a little gravelled â Took off the shoe pared down the crust, in 1 little place down to the sensible foot, filled it up with adhesive plaister (vide plaister adhesive volume 2 white) put a ledger of tow over it, and then the shoe on again â May use the mare again in a few days â
Blamire had brought a bottle of stuff to take down Hotspurâs splint on his near foreleg â Equal parts spirit turpentine and ammonia, (vide White volume 2 liquid blister and vide ammonia) and soap liniment to make it adhere â Blamire rubbed on about a tea-or dessert spoonful â This rubbing to be repeated several times at first every day then every other day â The horse turned out again within the hour (kept up a little for fear he should bite or rub the part while it smarted) and I observed in the field that the hair was brought off â
Finish day Came in to dinner at 6 1/2 â In the evening went into the field to the horses, and gave Hotspur oat-cake â Then sauntered along the new road and in the garden with my aunt and did not come in till 8 50/60 p.m. â Got some strawberries in the garden, I hope not too many â
Finish day â Barometer 1 1/2 degree below changeable Fahrenheit 57Âș at 8 50/60 p.m. E [two dots, treating venereal complaint] O [two dots, signifying discharge] Not so much as yesterday, yet Blamires coming prevented my washing before dinner â
Came upstairs at 10 55/60. Warm soap lather, as last night, of the hot water brought to bathe my eyes with â

Monster, She Wrote: The Women Who Pioneered Horror and Speculative Fiction, by Lisa Kröger and Melanie R. Anderson, Quirk Books, 2019. Cover art and internal illustrations by Natalya Balnova, info: penguinrandomhouse.com.
Meet the women writers who defied convention to craft some of literatureâs strangest tales, from Frankenstein to The Haunting of Hill House and beyond. Frankenstein was just the beginning: horror stories and other weird fiction wouldnât exist without the women who created it. From Gothic ghost stories to psychological horror to science fiction, women have been primary architects of speculative literature of all sorts. And their own life stories are as intriguing as their fiction. Everyone knows about Mary Shelley, creator of Frankenstein, who was rumored to keep her late husbandâs heart in her desk drawer. But have you heard of Margaret âMad Madgeâ Cavendish, who wrote a science-fiction epic 150 years earlier (and liked to wear topless gowns to the theater)? If you know the astounding work of Shirley Jackson, whose novel The Haunting of Hill House was reinvented as a Netflix series, then try the psychological hauntings of Violet Paget, who was openly involved in long-term romantic relationships with women in the Victorian era. Youâll meet celebrated icons (Ann Radcliffe, V.C. Andrews), forgotten wordsmiths (Eli Colter, Ruby Jean Jensen), and todayâs vanguard (Helen Oyeyemi). Curated reading lists point you to their most spine-chilling tales. Part biography, part readerâs guide, the engaging write-ups and detailed reading lists will introduce you to more than a hundred authors and over two hundred of their mysterious and spooky novels, novellas, and stories.

***** I am over the moon at the suggestion of a biopic of Dave Letterman starring Michael Shannon. Will somebody think about really putting this into production??? Please??
***** Criminal Minds will wrap it up after this next and 15th season. The season 14 finale on Feb.6 will have Rossiâs wedding. They will spend the last season chasing after âa worthy adversaryâ rumored to be played by Harold Perrineau as they jump ahead in time.
***** I am so touched by shows like Grace and Frankie and Schittâs Creek that look right past the usually discussed issues for interracial and same sex couples . Â Gee, just think, itâs like we are all the same.
***** If you havenât seen Michael Bennet and his senate floor speech about Ted Cruz, government shutdowns and Trump, run to C-span and catch it. These things make me proud to be in a DEMOCRACY!
***** Can this be true?? The constitution of Texas states that one canât hold public office unless they believe in a supreme being??
***** Julian Castro is running for President.
***** Kamala Harris is running for President.
***** Cory Booker is running for President.
***** HGTV is apparently working on a huge publicity stunt and ratings grabber. They have purchased the home whose exterior was used in the Brady Bunch. A show will reunite the cast, bring in some famous fane and remodel the inside to look like the Brady set. At the end they may give the house away.
***** Michael Shannon and Audra McDonald will team up to revive Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune on Broadway.
***** Rashida Jones and Bill Murray will star in Sofia Coppolaâsâ On the Rocks.â
***** Why isnât extreme ironing a bigger sport by now??** And can we make Petanque a bigger thing while weâre at it?
***** Craig Ferguson is selling his LA compound.
***** China has landed on the far side of the moon!!!
***** NASAâs New Horizons has went further than anyone has gone before for our first image of Ultima Thule.
***** Kentucky has introduced a bill to ban abortion in the state.
***** Told to a reporter: âItâs your job to speak truthfully and precisely, not mine.â âKellyanne Conway** The new book, Team of Vipers, suggests that The Conways are working in concert. Â It is thought that she is valuable to Trump because she has no qualms about saying anything.
***** Super bowl LIII will host Maroon 5, Travis Scott and Big Boi. They will have no pre- concert interview. It is said that many artists turned down the gig because of the controversy. Maroon 5 has gotten some shit for performing but they caution us to just watch.** Roger Waters has asked Maroon 5 to take a knee during the show.
***** Natasha Lyonne is getting raves for her new show, Russian Doll.
***** Tom Sizemore was arrested for drug possession.

***** There are more people in the Kremlin than in Washington who know what Trump said to Putin. â Tom Nichols
***** Members of congress can retire at full pay after 1 term. Children of congress members donât have to pay back student loans. Is that true?? Can this be right??

***** The Golden Globes were held and were hosted by Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh. Â My best dressed was Isla Fisher, Elizabeth Moss. Danai Gurira, Julia Roberts, Carol Burnett, Emily Blunt, Lupita Nyongâo, Patricia Clarkson, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jameela Jamil, Rosamund Pike, Jim Carrey, Alison Brie, Gemma Chan and Bradley Cooper. Worst dressed goes to Rachel Weisz, Julianne Moore, Layra Dern, Anne Hathaway, Maya Rudolph, Rami Mlek, Molly Sims and Heidi Klum. I was so happy for winners like The Americans (highlight of the evening!!!), Regina King, Lady Gaga, Mahershala Ali, Patricia Clarkson, Darren Criss, Bohemian Rhapsody, Rami Malek, Olivia Colman and Green Book. Â The Cecil B. DeMille award went to Jeff Bridges. The new Carol Burnett award started off with Carol herself. I was saddened that Bill Hader, Henry Winkler, Kieran Culkin, Keri Russell and Sacha Baron Cohen went home empty handed. The Fiji water girl got most of the press and gave much free advertising to her product. Â Some of the stars did not like her getting in their shots to push a product without their knowledge, both a clever and sad state of affairs.
***** The Kominsky Method will be back for season 2.
***** The Sag awards had their big night and gave the lifetime achievement to Alan Alda. Winners included Emily Blunt, Darren Criss, Black Panther, Rami Malek and Glenn Close. I was especially thrilled with some love goingto Jason Bateman and Patricia Arquette. The WTF award goes to Alison Brie.
***** The Oscar race is on. Best picture could go to Blank Panther, Blackkklansman, Roma, The Favourite, Green Book, Vice, Bohemian Rhapsody and A Star is born. Black Panther also got some love for music and costume design. Â Fingers crossed for Isle of Dogs in the animated category. Actor nods had a few surprises. Willem Dafoe and Rami Malek , Lady Gaga and Melissa McCarthy are up for leads and supporting mentions are for Mahershala Ali, Regina King, Adam Driver and Sam Elliott. I am so hopeful for Spike Lee and I want to hear that speech.

***** Days alert: I wonder if Leoâs real name âMatthew Cooperâ is a nod to out actor Chad Allen from Dr. Quinn??!! It is also fun to see Judith Chapman take on the role of Leoâs Mama, Diana. The pair played Mother and son previously on The Young and the Restless. Is she really Diana Colville from Johnâs past??** So Stefan has been played by Tyler Christopher who asked for some time off and a sub was put in place who will take over in March. Since Christopher left, he has since decided that he will leave permanently so things are up in the air. Will Stefan and Gabi hook up? Days has been renewed for season 55. HOORAY!!!! ***** So, the new Conan format has ups and downs. I miss the band and the desk but I am Loving the fade in and fade out at commercials. I have always hated the, âWeâll be right back â nonsense. I was sad to lose a half hour at first but Conan and Andy do seem refreshed.
***** Still waiting for the release of Apple Seed which is written, directed and starring Michael Worth. It is one of the final films of Rance Howard who stars with his son, Clint, Adrienne Barbeau and the other Father and son team of Robby and Zephyr Benson.

***** Despite some people I admire that are giving Alexandria Ocasio Cortez a talking to like sheâs a child, I say âGive âem Hell!â Â She could well be President so fight girl!!
***** Word is that Karen Pence is now teaching at the Immanuel School in Virginia. The school refuses admission to students who participate in or condone homosexual activity. The application for the school states that misconduct includes heterosexual activity outside of marriage, homosexual activity, polygamy, transgender identity and use of pornographic websites. The application goes on to state that âa wife must submit to her husbandâ and a pledge must be signed to that effect.
***** There is controversy over the bill to give people a day off for Election Day. Many people will still have to work, the country never completely shuts down. How many fucking times do I have to say it: VOTE BY MAIL!!!!!!!!!!!
***** So, Scary clown told us Mexico would pay for âthe wallâ. During the campaign he gave actual ideas for that like Mexico giving us a one time payout or else he would not allow Mexican immigrants to western union money back to Mexico. Another idea was that there would be a great ta on that Western union money. It does not seem like they tried any of that and just decided we would pay for the stupid âwall.â How about the money he makes off Trump merch which his website and hotels still sell to pay for it?? How about the $35 million that Trump sold in real estate in 2018? The âWallâ go fund me did not reach its $1billion goal so the $20 million they did collect is being offered for refunds. Some of those people still want that money to go for its purpose so Trump is creating a non- profit. Canât we use that money to help the border patrol agents and get the backlog in immigration court moving?? That we are still talking about this ridiculous wall and that it had a go fund me page is enough to boggle the normal brain.** I think Kimmel said it best when he suggested that Trump just tell the red hats that the wall has been built. Â They believe everything he says so why wouldnât they believe that?? Â It would save the country a lot of headaches. ** What the Hell is with his new âwheels and wallsâ mantra??** Russia caused Brexit too? Putin is a menace.** Another sink hole appeared the White House. WTF?
***** The congressional budget office says the shut down cost the U.S. 11 billion
***** Trump is talking to Herman Cain about a job on the Federal Reserve Board.
***** The GOP is selling fake bricks that cost about 50 cents for $20 each to send to Senate Dems. Some have said that the Dems should sign them and sell them and give the money to government workers. ** Why are Russian jets fucking around on the North American coastline??
***** Roger Stone has been indicted on 5 counts of false statements, 1 count of obstruction and 1 count of witness tampering. The FBI officers who arrested him were part of the shut down and they still did their job!! Â He publically and privately claimed to have communicated with Russia. Predictions are that many more indictments are coming down the pike that involve many familiar faces.** Roger Stone has a Nixon tattoo on his back. I feel sorry for his cell mate.-Bill Maher
***** Bill Maher got some flak for comments after Stan Lee died. He wasnât slamming Lee, but wondered about comic book fans putting away childish things. I suppose that could include weed but point taken.
***** Jared Kushner along with 30 other White House staff was denied top secret clearance but Trump advisor Carl Kline overruled that decision and gave it to them anyway. This has never been done before, this is a job for intelligent agencies.
***** Empire star Jussie Smollett was attacked in Chicago in what cops are saying was a possible hate crime. The attackers were yelling that this was MAGA country, poured bleach on him and put a rope around his neck. Â The actor was previously sent a letter full of homophobic and racist slurs which he FBI had been looking into.
***** Ellen page gave us some memorable, powerful words to chew on with her appearance on Stephen Colbert. I am sure she gave courage to many who suffer because of our hate filled administration.
***** Gwyneth Paltrow is being sued from a 2016 ski incident for 3 mil.
***** I gain more and more respect for Seth Meyers. I did not really understand the choice of him as host in the beginning. His notice of local stations, choice of guests and revolving drummers makes for a great show.
***** A Dutch company may have invented a small device that converts heat into cold and Forbes is saying, âit could save the planet.â
***** So looking forward to Ryan Murphyâs The Politician which will star Jessica Lange, Gwyneth Paltrow and January Jones.
***** I know that is has happened little by little and we go thru times in our history when things get worse and then things get better but⊠When did this country get so fucking corrupt?? I mean seriously.. Why is Brendan Dassey still in prison and why is there no real justice for Teresa Halbach? ** Why is Trump still in the White House?**Why are government workers being told to work for nothing?? Why is R Kelly still living it up?? Why are some states going backward in time when it comes to womenâs health?? Why do many corporations care more about their own pockets than the children of their employees or the environment around them??** Why does our justice system so often punish big for small infractions and allow the powerful to do anything they want?? **Why is a wall a better idea than infrastructure or warm beds for the homeless or food for our children and why are so many children in cages??
***** How can it be that we are still in a world where people are not allowed to reach their full potential?? Why do so many selfish humans actually fight to live in a world where they actively hold others back? Shouldnât we all be concerned about the greater good? Â We should all be allowed to see a Doctor when we are ill. We should all be able to excel in education if we choose .We should all be able to get a job to fit our skills and work ethic. Â Opportunities and the pursuit of happiness should be available to all. Why is this so fucking hard for so many to grasp in this world? Imagine!
***** Sundance premiered the new flick, Big time adolescence with Griffin Gluck and Pete Davidson. Pete has since made no bones about filming in Syracuse. He hated it.
***** Jeff Flake will join CBS news as a contributor.
***** Tom Brokaw is in a bit of trouble for saying Hispanics should work harder at assimilation.
***** The Tom Hanks/ Matthew Rhys film, A beautiful day in the neighborhood has pushed back its release date to Nov. 22.
***** People are illogical and self- centered. Love them anyway. -Hedy Lemarr
*****R.I.P. Bob Einstein, Millie Wiesehan, victims of the Torrance. Ca. bowling alley shooting, Captain Darryl Dragon, Jo Andres, Lamin Sanneh, Carol Channing, Sandra Harmon, Bradley Bolke, the victims of Mediterranean shipwreck, Lorna Doom, victims of the Florida bank shooting, Kaye Ballard, Willie York , Barbara Claman , victims of the mining dam collapse in Brazil and James Frawley.

Susan Catherine Moore Waters
Susan Catherine Moore Waters
Today I am delving into the life of the nineteenth century American painter Susan Waters. It is difficult to compartmentalise her artwork, some, however, have labelled her a folk portraitist. It is a mixture of portraiture which could be best described as quirky and animal paintings. Her art, especially her early portraiture, is certainly easily recognisable as you will see. I like itsâŠ

Portman, Warner, Alexander, King Introduce Bipartisan Legislation to Address National Park Service Maintenance Backlog
Conservation & Recreation Groups Praise Bipartisan Legislation to Address $12 Billion National Park Service Backlog in Deferred and Overdue MaintenanceÂ
WASHINGTON, D.C. â U.S. Senators Rob Portman (R-OH), Mark Warner (D-VA), Lamar Alexander (R-TN), and Angus King (I-ME) introduced the Restore Our Parks Act, bipartisan legislation that would address the nearly $12 billion backlog in long-delayed maintenance projects at the National Park Service (NPS). Other original cosponsors include Senators Thom Tillis (R-NC), Susan Collins (R-ME), Kamala Harris (D-CA), John Hoeven (R-ND), Cory Gardner (R-CO), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Kevin Cramer (R-ND), Gary Peters (D-MI), John Boozman (R-AR), Roy Blunt (R-MO), Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Shelly Moore Capito (R-WV), Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Bob Casey (D-PA), Dan Sullivan (R-AK), Martin Heinrich (D-NM), Michael Bennet (D-CO), Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Steve Daines (R-MT). This legislation has been praised by Pew Charitable Trusts, the National Parks Conservation Association, the U.S. Travel Association, National Trust for Historic Preservation, and the Trust for the National Mall. A similar bill is being introduced today in the House led by Representatives Rob Bishop (R-UT) and Derek Kilmer (D-WA), which has more than 90 cosponsors.Â
âFor more than a century, the National Park Service has been inspiring Americans to explore the natural beauty of our country,â Portman said. âMy visits to various national parks in Ohio last year made it clear that we must pass this legislation to ensure that they have sufficient resources to maintain our national parks. This bill will create the Legacy Restoration Fund to provide the National Park Service with funds for deferred maintenance projects. This legislation will also help tackle the more than $100 million in maintenance backlog at Ohioâs eight national parks and will ensure the National Park Service can continue preserving American treasures like Cuyahoga Valley National Park.âÂ
âThe deferred maintenance backlog at national park sites in Virginia is currently over a billion dollars. The Commonwealth trails only California and the District of Columbia in total deferred maintenance needs. Colonial National Historical Park, which is home to Historic Jamestown and Yorktown Battlefield, has over $400 million in deferred maintenance needs alone,â said Warner. âWe owe it to our Commonwealth and to our country to pass this bill and clear the $12 billion maintenance backlog that is holding back essential repairs and renovations at our cherished national parks. This problem will only worsen if we fail to act.â Â
âToday, too many of our national parks are in bad shape. American families spending their vacations in our national parks are often shocked to find that so many of the roads, picnic areas, trails, campgrounds and visitor centers are run down or even closed,â Alexander said. âThe Restore Our Parks Act would be the biggest help to the National Park Service in 50 years â it would cut in half the maintenance backlog at our national parks and help restore our 418 national parks so Americans can enjoy them. The legislation is supported by a bipartisan group of senators and representatives, the Trump Administration and more than 100 conservation groups. When an idea this good â fixing our national parks for future generations â gets this much bipartisan support, itâs going to happen sooner or later. It is my hope we pass the legislation as soon as this year.âÂ
âFrom Acadia to Zion, the National Park System captures our countryâs diverse natural beauty and is a proud reminder of Americaâs dedication to preserving public land for all its citizens,â King said. âAs President Theodore Roosevelt once said, âThere are no words that can tell the hidden spirit of the wilderness, that can reveal its mystery, its melancholy, and its charm.â We have a collective responsibility to maintain this spirit of the wilderness in our National Parks â and this starts with the $12 billion maintenance backlog. With strong bipartisan support, this bill will ensure our parks are well-maintained so generations of visitors can experience the wonders of our National Parks for years to come.âÂ
âThe Restore Our Parks Act would provide billions of dollars to address the multibillion-dollar repair backlog at our national parks,â said Marcia Argust, director of The Pew Charitable Trustsâ project to restore Americaâs parks. âThis investment would help preserve these treasured places and support sites that generate more than $18 billion in annual spending in nearby communities by park visitors.âÂ
âFor years, our national parks have been plagued with underfunding while also dealing with a mounting backlog of repair needs, totaling nearly $12 billion. Grand Canyonâs water and sewer systems, built during World War II, are failing. Roads in Yellowstone that were originally built in 1905 for carriages, not the millions of cars and RVs that use them today, are sinking. Thanks to the leadership of Senators Portman, Warner, Alexander and King, park staff could get the funding they need to fix our national parks. The bipartisan Restore Our Parks Act would make a much needed and significant investment to address these and so many more infrastructure needs in national parks across the country, ensuring they are ready to welcome the next generation of park visitors,â said Theresa Pierno, President and CEO for National Parks Conservation Association.Â
âIn 2018, our National Parks contributed $35.8 billion in total economic output and supported 306,000 American jobs. National Parks are a huge attraction for visitors across the country and around the world, which makes investment in the maintenance of our national parks not just an environmental necessity but also an economic priority. U.S. Travel applauds Senators Portman, Warner, Alexander and King for reintroducing the Restore Our Parks Act, which will invest in national park infrastructure and facilities and shrink the nearly $12 billion in deferred maintenance facing our parks,â said Tori Barnes, Senior Vice President, Government Relations, U.S. Travel Association.Â
âThe nearly $12 billion National Park System deferred maintenance backlog jeopardizes some of our nationâs most iconic historic resources and cultural artifacts. By creating a reliable federal funding source to reduce the backlog, this legislation will enable the National Park Service and other federal agencies to save the historic structures, landscapes, and necessary infrastructure that enable the public to safely enjoy the places that reflect our nationâs history. We commend Reps. Bishop and Kilmer and Sens. Portman, Warner, Alexander and King for their leadership in creating a bipartisan path for Congress to secure the future of important historic and cultural resources now at risk,â said Thomas J. Cassidy, vice president for government relations and policy for the National Trust for Historic Preservation.Â
âThe time is now for Congress to address this national crisis, particularly in the Nationâs Capital. The National Mall hosts more than 35 million visits each year and has the highest deferred maintenance bill of any National Park across the country. As the greatest symbol of American Democracy, we must improve and preserve this historic legacy for generations to come. We express our gratitude to Representatives Bishop and Kilmer in the House and Senators Portman, Warner, Alexander and King in the Senate for their steadfast leadership of this important legislation,â said Catherine Townsend, president and CEO, the Trust for the National Mall.Â
NOTE: The Restore Our Parks Act would establish the âNational Park Service Legacy Restoration Fundâ to reduce the maintenance backlog by allocating existing revenues the government receives from on and offshore energy development. This funding would come from 50 percent of all revenues that are not otherwise allocated and deposited into the General Treasury not to exceed $1.3 billion each year for the next five years.Â

Ashe Co. NC Genealogies and Histories #northcarolinapioneers
Ashe County Genealogy Resources: Wills and Estates 1801 to 1903
Ashe County was created 18 November 1799 from Wilkes County. The area that became Ashe County was part of Anson County, Rowan County, Surry County, and Wilkes County. Both Alleghany and Watauga Counties were formed out of Ashe County. The county seat is Jefferson, North Carolina. The Ashe County Courthouse in Jefferson was destroyed by fire in 1865, however, the surviving records are contained here. The Will Books reflect inconsistent years, suggesting that there are gaps due to the loss of records in the fire. Indexes to Probate Records
