DAY 21: Get Down Tonight by KC & the Sunshine Band

An incredible part of music in general is the emotion we feel when listening to different genres. Whether happy or sad, thought-provoking or straight forward, there is a song for every mood. When talking about feel-good music that just makes you want to get up and dance the night away, look no further than kings of disco KC & the Sunshine Band. A signature of the 70′s, the story of the disco movement in America is woefully incomplete without mention of these guys. Although the name may not seem familiar, their track listing over the years sees solid gold after solid gold. That’s the Way (I Like It), I Get Lifted, Boogie Shoes, ...all songs that routinely find their way into my head space, and that’s just song selections from this album alone! Each track from their sophomore album packs a punch with familiar tunes and time-tested melodies that have not gone out of style to this day. As positive as their name suggests, the Sunshine Band lays down the funky beat while Harry Wayne Casey keeps the party going with stereotypical disco flair, highlighting his appreciation for the female form and his desire to get out on the dance floor and do his thing. The mere simplicity in humanity that disco provokes is captured wonderfully through the blasting horn line and chippy guitar pickings, in no other way I can put but it just encourages movement and fun. Disco is all about carefree feelings and losing yourself into the music, which I think embodies the lyrical content of at least 90% of KC & the Sunshine Band’s repertoire. Is there anything wrong with that though? Simplicity, when executed well, resonates with the masses and is personable to levels that are easily related to. When disco fever swept the nation throughout the decade in the 70′s, the only prescription was to get out on to the floor, shake your money maker and dance the night away. Perhaps that fever never truly was cured, only morphed into a different bug that nonetheless prompted our need to feel the music. Is it sacrilege to call EDM today’s disco? I think that’s the point I’m making here.
