Farewell, Footy
Tumblr media
Right, we’re not crying. I promised myself.
Today, I may be saying my goodbyes to football, but we’re going to make this a celebration. No sad faces!! We’ve had too much fun for any tears.
Maybe it’s because I’m from Sunderland, but two things have always been true about me: I’ve always been stubborn, and I’ve always loved football. It’s been in my blood ever since I was five years old. I saw a load of boys playing in the school yard and I walked straight up to them and said the four magic words….
“Can I play too?”
Three years later, I got my picture in the local newspaper. My mam brought home the Sunderland Echo and there was a scruffy little girl in the middle of a gang of boys, smiling away with her trophy. The headline said: JILL IS PROUD TO BE A MAN. (I got Man of the Match at a boys tournament). And I remember I was fuming because the organisers of the tournament were so embarrassed and they told my mam, “Oh, don’t worry, we’ll change it so it says Girl of the Match.”
I said, “No!!! They’ll think I got it for being the only girl!!! Leave it!!! I’m the Man of the Match!!!”
I give my mam a lot of credit, because I had a dream that didn’t even exist yet, and she supported me anyway. The next year, the club told me I couldn’t play for them anymore — it was only for boys — and I remember stuffing my face into the settee cushions and crying my eyes out because I thought my world had literally crumbled. I cried for so long that the leather of the sofa was stuck to my face. But my mam said, “Don’t worry, we’ll find you another team.”
Football was simply my life, and I could barely even sit still for tea before I ran back outside to play. I’d wolf it down in five minutes and then run from house to house knocking on all the neighbours’ doors trying to recruit as many of the boys as I could, pestering all the parents — “Is Craig coming out? Is Mark coming out?”
If nobody was up for a game, I’d just kick about in the back lanes by myself. If the ball flew over a fence and the neighbour wasn’t around to throw it back, I’d just run sprints back and forth from one wall to the other. And you have to imagine the back lanes in Sunderland — they’re maybe 10 metres wide, tops. Run, touch the wall, run to the other wall. Back and forth in a grubby lane! I’d be doing this for hours, until dark. That was just my fitness routine.
At the weekend, there was a special at the local pub where if you bought a pint, they’d give you a token for a free bus ride to the Stadium of Light. So my grandpa would go for a drink, and at noon I’d run up the hill to meet him and we’d ride the bus to watch Sunderland play. I was that kid who collected every match programme, the one begging all the players for autographs (and judging the ones who were too cool to sign.)
I remember when I was 13, I begged my mam to let me go see England vs. Turkey at the Stadium of Light. It was a late kickoff, and I had a curfew, but I begged and I begged, “Please let us go!” and finally she said, “Alright, but be back by 10.”
Long story short: Stayed ’til 11 waiting outside the car park. Got David Beckham’s autograph. He had the blonde highlights and everything. He saw me holding up a poster that I'd pulled out from an old football magazine. I was holding it out through the gate with me long arms (thank God for them) and he came right over.
I ended up back home around midnight. Mam was none too pleased with us, but I just remember folding up the poster in my back pocket so she wouldn’t tear it up and thinking, “Right, ground me for a month. Don’t care. Best day of my life.”
When you love football, it’s not rational. You pour everything you have into it, and it’s like you don’t even notice that you’re doing it. I’ll never forget, when I was about 18 or 19 years old, I was trying to break into the England team, and Hope Powell said something to all of us players that is so true:
“If you want to play for England, you have to be obsessed.”
Tumblr media
When I was younger, I didn’t really understand what she meant. But looking back on my career now, and what a ridiculous journey it has been, she was absolutely right. I remember when I was playing with my first professional club at Sunderland, we didn’t even have our own kit. The men’s team used to give us their gear from the season before, so it was like a free-for-all to grab what you could. I remember rummaging through the laundry bags because there was a physio by the name of Jocky Scott, and so I’d try to grab his stuff so I could have the JS initials on my shorts. The shorts were so long on us they looked like three quarter lengths, and the red jumpers had been washed so many times that they’d faded to pink, but we were just grateful for whatever we could get.
On away days, we had this rented minibus from the 1980s — the kind where they had the dodgy little lamps at every table where you’d pull the string to turn them on — and we’d literally stop six or seven times on the side of the motorway to pick up the players. Not even at a service station or anything. Just stood on the side of the road, waving. Everybody had a full-time job. These were teachers, policewomen, caterers. But above all, footballers. I remember we used to always stay at a Premier Inn, and it would be four of us to a room. Two in the double bed, one on the settee, and one on the little kiddie pullout bed.
But you know what? Those were the absolute best times. I would go back there in a heartbeat. That’s the God’s honest truth. As a young player, those Everton girls took me under their wing and shaped who I am today. I remember we used to get to the room on a Saturday and race to switch on Match of the Day. All of us crowded around the little TV, drinking a cup of tea, just having a ball.
We’d get back home the next night at two o’clock in the morning, and half the women had to be up for work at six, but they loved it. We all did. If you don’t love it, you don’t last. You can’t. The dream is what sustains you.
I may be saying my goodbyes to football, but we’re going to make this a celebration. No sad faces!! We’ve had too much fun for any tears.
God, this is so embarrassing, but if I can’t embarrass myself during my retirement announcement, when can I really? When I was playing for Everton, I remember I used to make these long drives on the M62 from Sunderland to Liverpool. Just to set the scene for you, I had this legendary Peugeot 106 with alloy wheels, and the radio was broken, and I was always losing my MP3 player, so for the three hour drive I’d pass the time by interviewing myself.
Not in my head. Out loud. I’d be both the interviewer and myself. I was just thinking, One day, this will come in handy….
“Jill, you got a big match coming up this weekend against Arsenal. How’s the team feeling?”
“Yeah, well, obviously it’s a massive opportunity for us….”
Picture this all happening as I’m cruising down the M62 in my little Peugeot, but I’ve also got packets of Dairylea Lunchables and Yazoo milkshakes all over the back seat, because I’ve just stopped off for tea at the petrol station.
Just incredibly serious and professional. Eating a ham and cheese Lunchable, using the Yazoo bottle as a microphone, talking about, “Well, the manager really had us working hard in training this week….”
This was my life. Just surviving, definitely not thriving. I had stopped going to university. I had spent about £20,000 in student loans on petrol.
Imagine, if you would have told me back then that I’d go on to play for England for 16 years?
If you would have told me that I’d live to see 90,000 people packed into Wembley Stadium for a women's European final?
And that I’d be playing in it?
Impossible.
Tumblr media
You know what’s funny? This last chapter was almost not written for me. As I was rehabbing from my knee injury, the final team selection for the Euros was looming, and I really had no idea if I was going to make it in. I remember when they called us into Sarina’s office one by one to give us the news, I was so nervous that I’d drunk three Flat Whites in the cafeteria and when I sat down across from Sarina, I was literally shaking.
She said, “Jill, what’s the matter with you?”
I said, “Well, I had three coffees but also I’m nervous so I’m not sure which.”
She said, “You’re going.”
It was just such a massive relief for me, because at 35 years old, I knew it was my last go. I just wanted to give absolutely everything I had left to this team, no matter what that meant.
That tournament … what can I even say?
I am just a big ball of disbelief, even now. I have a gold medal. I can’t stop looking at it, three weeks later. It’s so heavy. It’s so real. I keep dropping it, and I have to ask myself: Was I really there? Did this really happen? Did I really swear live on TV?? Did I really hug Prince William?
I think he broke royal protocol when he gave us this big cuddle, but you could see it in his face — he was just so happy for us. He’s followed our journey all the way along. I just kept saying to him “I can’t believe it, I can’t believe it.”
When I got my MBE I never got to go to Buckingham Palace, because of Covid. Maybe now he can invite me back and he can present us with it.
But it was not just the final. There were so many moments from that tournament when I was sat there, looking around the stadium in our first game, seeing 70,000 people packed into Old Trafford for a women's football match, seeing all the banners and the atmosphere and the emotion … and I’d just think to myself: Look how far we’ve come.
When I had moved to Man City, I was just literally amazed that they even washed our kits. Everyone was getting annoyed with me, because I kept saying it.
“They wash our kits??? They really wash our kits???”
“Jill, shut up!!! Yes they wash the kits. You deserve to have your kit washed.”
Just being able to train like a full professional was magic. (I can hear Nick Cushing shouting, “Jill Scott needs her touches on the ball!!” Without Nick helping me reinvent my career at 26, I wouldn’t have gone on to have another nine years with England. Thank you, Nick.)
Until I was 26, it was a luxury just to be able to get my touches every day. So to see 90,000 people at Wembley for the final against Germany, it was indescribable. Being on the bench for the first half, a part of me was sat there like a fan. I mean, England might actually win something??? Ten minutes into the match, I had to remind myself that I’m not a kid in the stands watching Michael Owen against Argentina or something. I’m really part of the team.
There’s a photo from the start of the match and you can see that everyone else is on the bench smiling and taking in the moment, and I’m just sat there so nervous, thinking: COME ON, England.
The best thing that happened to me was when they called me to warm up in the 77th minute, because at least then I was in control of something. I just snapped out of it and could concentrate on doing my job. I knew what I had to do: Go in there and smash as many players as I could. Close them down. Run my socks off. Shut up shop.
I just wanted to win so, so, so badly, and there was a moment in the game where I lost my head a little bit … which has gone a bit viral and has been turned into mugs and t-shirts (that are currently sitting in my grandma’s house.) Obviously, I wish the BBC cameras didn’t pick it up, but all I can do now is apologise to my grandma: Sorry, Ganny!!!
I had 30 years of football’s heartbreaks and dreams and disappointments built up inside me, and I just wanted to do it for everybody in that stadium … everybody in the country … all them girls having a kickabout in the back lanes. I wanted it so, so bad.
I don’t even remember the moment when Chloe scores, if I’m honest. She’s worrying it’s a foul because she shields the ball so well, and we’re looking at her, she’s looking at me — she’s half took her top off … is it a goal?! Is it not?! Then it gets given, she runs off and it was just chaos. The fans are screaming, her top came fully off, and Wembley went mad. The next thing I know Georgia is awkwardly trying to put Chloe’s shirt back on.
Tumblr media
After she scored, I knew we were going to be champions, we had Millie and Leah at the back and Mary in goal. We were not giving up that lead. At the final whistle, I just remember running straight up to Keira and saying, “Thank you for absolutely bossing the midfield the entire tournament.”
After that I did something that I haven’t shared with anyone yet. I ran to the changing rooms to send one text. I didn’t want to be on my phone, but there was one person I needed to message. Mo Marley. Mo was the coach who took a chance on a skinny 18-year-old Jill Scott. If she’d never given me that opportunity, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I can’t say enough good things about Mo. In the changing room, I just messaged her saying, “We did it, Mo.”
Obviously, everyone got to see the absolute scenes in the dressing room on social media after the Euro final. But the thing that really sticks out to me is that night, when we got back to the Lensbury Hotel, me and Millie Bright were sharing a room, and of course we were buzzing so there was no way we were going to sleep. We just sat up all night, literally doing raps and poems and all sorts of nonsense, like little kids. At half seven in the morning, as the sun was coming up, I went for a walk to get a coffee with Lotte without having a minute of sleep, and it was the most surreal moment of my life.
On the walk to the cafe, everybody stopped us.
There were car horns beeping, and people stopping us to take photos with tears in their eyes, and they were just saying, “Thank you.” We walked past the news agents and there were pictures of us on every front page.
ENGLAND. CHAMPIONS.
If you don’t love it, you don’t last. You can’t. The dream is what sustains you.
It felt better than a dream.
But as I like to say: It’s not about the splash. It’s about the dive.
You know the last thing I ever did on a football pitch? It was perfectly me. We had celebrated, the streamers were going off, and I was just sitting there with my medal on the grass for an hour and a half, taking it all in … and I knew, deep in my heart, that this was it.
So many memories came back to me. I thought about Sunderland and all the sprints I had done from wall to wall, 10 metres at a time. I thought about showing up to my first England cap with moulds instead of studs!
Thought about the tattoo I got at 2 o‘clock in the morning in the middle of Liverpool after we beat Arsenal in the Community Shield.
Thought about the unbelievable support of my family all these years – about how Ganny would be telling the painter or the gardener or anyone who stopped by the house, “You know my granddaughter plays for England?”
Thought about all the fans who supported me in my career, and how I’ll never be able to thank them enough.
Thought about how my niece and nephews got to watch their Aunty Jill go out a champion.
Thought about all them little moments with the girls in hotels and changing rooms and minibusses over the years. Those are the things that I’ll miss the most.
Tumblr media
(I told you I wasn’t going to cry.)
I just sat there and thought: Right. If this is it, let’s do one more run. So I grabbed Lotte Wubben-Moy as well as our Sports scientist Martin and I said, “You’ve made me do so many box-to-box runs throughout this tournament…. Come on, run one more with us.”
The game had been over for ages, but it just felt right. Suddenly I was like that little girl again, running on her own in the back lanes.
Box to box. Wall to wall.
Only this time I had a gold medal swinging from my neck. That was my way of saying goodbye.
And this is my way of saying thank you.

Women’s Soccer Leagues
Posted on January 28, 2017 by womensathletics
https://womensathletics.wordpress.com/2017/01/28/womens-soccer-leagues/
I woke up this morning whining over the fact that the NWSL season was soooooo far away, and how terrible it was that my beloved Portland Thorns lost to…let me cool down for a second…The Western NY Flash. While I continued my internal rant on how Portland should have beat the Flash, and crunched on my avocado toast, it suddenly hit me.
I first realized that in order to have good avocado toast, my piece of bread required further toasting to give it the perfect crunchiness to softness ratio that my breakfast was clearly lacking at the moment. Additionally, it occurred to me that footy fans all over the world don’t spend precious Sunday morning grumbling about their least favorite NWSL team (by the way the Western NY Flash ceases to exist anymore, it was relocated to North Carolina to form the NC Courage). Instead, these fans have their own leagues (pro or semi-pro) and favorite players to discuss.
As a blog that promotes discussion of all aspects of women’s sports, it only makes sense to introduce the several different leagues of soccer across the world.
“FOOTBALL IS A UNIVERSAL SPORT, A UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE”
Each league has their own distinct styles of play and level of global recognition. All of them help their respective athletes bring their skills to the next level and entrance football fans all over the globe. Check them out!

Defoe honoured for Bradley friendship

Former Sunderland footballer Jermain Defoe is to be honoured for his friendship with young Bradley Lowery.
The six-year-old avid Sunderland fan, from Blackhall Colliery in County Durham, died in July 2017 from a rare form of childhood cancer.
He was a mascot for the Black Cats and struck up a close friendship with Defoe, who now plays for Bournemouth.
The player is to be named Personality of the Year at the North East Football Writers’ Association’s annual awards.
The award, which is given in association with the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation cancer charity, recognises those who use their position in football to benefit the wider community.
The youngster’s plight touched thousands of well-wishers and a charity in his name was launched by his parents after hundreds of thousands of pounds was raised.

Bradley died on 7 July last year having been diagnosed with neuroblastoma when he was 18 months old.
Defoe said he had an “instant connection” with Bradley after visiting the ill youngster in hospital and regularly travelled to the family home to see him.
Sir Bobby’s widow, Lady Elsie, said: “The special connection between Bradley and Jermain was apparent for everyone to see. I’m very proud that Jermain is receiving our award because it recognises his wonderful compassion and his commitment to helping other children with cancer in Bradley’s memory.
“The passion for football in this region means it has great power to do good. The friendship between Bradley and Jermain, and all the positive things that have happened because of it, is proof of that.”
Colin Young, secretary of the North East Football Writers’ Association, added: “The very special friendship between Bradley Lowery and Jermain Defoe touched the whole country.
“It started from a joint love of football and Sunderland Football Club and blossomed into a bond which was an inspiration to millions of fans across the world.”
The awards ceremony is due to take place on 25 February.

MOTOR Nuerone Disease victim Mel Holden died in 1981 aged 26 - leaving a wife and young family behind. Former Preston North End, Sunderland, Blackpool and Netherlands club PEC Zwolle striker Holden would have celebrated his 64th birthday in August. Holden, who died in 1981, made over 150 career appearances and is one of many people who have lost a young life to MND - an incurable disease. Holden was forced to retire in 1979 while in the Netherlands, having played just 10 games for PEC Zwolle. Two years later, Holden who lived in Penwortham, Preston, my birth City, was dead. Almost four decades since Holden's passing footballer Fernando Ricksen, 42, is in St Andrews Hospice in Airdrie, Scotland, six years after being diagnosed with MND. Former Rangers star Ricksen, who has a property near Valencia, uses a voice-counter to speak. Ricksen, diagnosed in 2013, was told he had 18 months to live. Brave Ricksen continues to fight the disease, and is actively raising awareness about the illness: "I just keep going,” said Ricksen, who has a six year old daughter, Isabella. Ricksen’s second wife, Russian born Veronika, and Isabella, visit him frequently from their Spanish family home, where she had been caring for him. Having washed, dressed and fed him, she is no longer able to provide round-the-clock medical attention, that is now undertaken at St Andrew’s Hospice. Ricksen will spend the remainder of his life there. Isabella, Fernando and Veronika depart in tears - when his wife and daughter return home to Spain after visits. Another footballer diagnosed with MND was Bolton defender Stephen Darby - aged just 29. He announced his retirement in 2018. Former Liverpool prodigy Darby, married to Manchester City defender and England Ladies football team captain Steph Houghton, is receiving support from the Players Football Association (PFA). “I have seen first hand how difficult it has been for Stephen, Steph and his family - but he has conducted himself with a tremendous amount of dignity and bravery. “Stephen has been a credit to his profession. Myself and the PFA will continue to support Stephen in his battle ahead against motor neurone disease," said Matthew Buck from the PFA. Returning to Holden, who played under former England and Manchester United star Sir Bobby Charlton at Preston in the seventies. Deepdale teammate Mike Elwiss told a story of dressing up - as ice cream men - during a team talk! Elwiss recalled when Bobby Charlton arranged a special coaching film, and all the players had to attend. Elwiss and Mel Holden donned white coats, held torches and had an ice cream box each. As the coaching film played in the dark - Elwiss flicked a light switch - and he and Holden announced: 'Choc-ices, crisps, pop-corn, lemonade'. Elwiss, Holden and the players howled with laughter. Charlton was lying on the floor in fits of laughter. A light hearted indelible everlasting memory, taken from a tragic story in the life of MND victim Mel Holden.

Steph Houghton speaks for the first time after her husband Stephen Derby was struck by an illness
Until last September, time was always Steph Houghton's friend. Every year they bring new worlds to conquer and new horizons to catch a glimpse.
Of course, she had injuries and setbacks like any other football player does, but she swept them aside and forged them through and through. In 2014, women's football started to become mainstream, she was named captain of England at the age of 25.
It's hard to think of many people in sports, would you rather go into battle with Houghton. There is something about her that exudes responsibility and intolerance. Her selflessness has made her popular with her teammates. & # 39; She has a big heart & # 39 ;, says English manager Phil Neville. & # 39; The girls love her because they know she cares about the players. & # 39;
<img id = "i-738a9c1ab3cd4ffd" src = "https://dailym.ai/2VpiPhr -7_1554579617112.jpg "height =" 418 "width =" 634 "alt =" Every year they brought new achievements for Steph Houghton and more respect from teammates & # 39; class = "blkBorder
Houghton is sitting in her training suit in England in a quiet corner of the Football Association's training complex in St George's Park, where she prepares for Tuesday is friendly to Spain in Swindon and laughs when she thinks about how far she has eaten since the day she joined Sunderland Ladies at the age of 13.
She recalls the days when her father used to drive from their home in the old pit village of South Hetton in Count and Durham in their sky-blue Peugeot 306 to train at the Charlie Hurley Center in Sunderland. The rest of the family wanted the car to be red because they were Sunderland fans, but her mother was sky blue.
Aspiring female soccer players had to pay to play in those days. Houghton & # 39; s subs for the Sunderland Ladies & # 39; team were £ 250 a year. & # 39; That was a lot of money back then & # 39 ;, she says. They wore hand-me-downs from the men's team. Now she looks at young girls who arrive at her club Manchester City, in their own set, without having to worry about an early finish, because they can't afford spotlights.
In 2012, she played for Great Britain at the Olympic Games and scored the winner in the last group match against Brazil for more than 70,000 fans on Wembley. In 2015, she led England to the semi-final of the World Cup in Canada. The team's slogan was & # 39; Inspire a Generation & # 39; and they did it. More and more girls started playing the game.
In September 2017, she became engaged to Stephen Darby, the Bolton Wanderers and the former player of Liverpool and Bradford City. She announced the news with a message on Twitter.

& # 39; So yesterday I said yes & # 39 ;, she wrote. & # 39; I can't wait to marry you and spend the rest of my life with you! #PerfectProposal #MrsDarbyToBe. & # 39; He added a happy face, big red heart and cartoon parables of the bride and groom.
Congratulations flooded in. Darby is also known as one of the nicest men in the game. They got married last June and the photo is on Twitter from Houghton
Two From now on, Houghton, 30, will lead England to the World Cup in France and this time they will not get to the tournament, the brave underdogs but one of the favorites to win it.
But something has changed. [Bewerken] [lijst toevoegen] Eat [bewerken] [lijst toevoegen] Eat But something has changed. Time is no longer her boyfriend. The march is something to be told against and to scream. Last September, three months after they were married, Darby (29) announced that he had stopped playing football immediately and had been diagnosed with motor motor disease, a condition that gradually damages the nervous system and for which there is no cure yet. Houghton, a leading, unyielding central half, has not spoken of it so far. She has a horror of hassle and sympathy. She hates the idea that special attention should be given to her because of what happened. And when Neville offered her the chance to miss a training session just after her husband's diagnosis, he said & she fought with the teeth & # 39; to participate. It is typical of Houghton & # 39; s dedication to the ethical team that she has now decided to speak only because she did not want the subject to be distracted when the World Cup came closer. She is the captain on the side and she accepts that brings accurate investigation.
It's hard to think of many people in the sport you'd rather fight than Houghton

& # 39; Clearly, it has been a very, very difficult year on a personal level, but I cannot do that. be honest and say that I am here in English colors and that I really focus on England. Of course Stephen is my number 1 priority and he will always be.
& # 39; He has been an incredible person in the way he dealt with it. He / she / it has been everything.
& Hopefully, if you read this when it is in the newspaper, he will think that he
I ask her if some time has passed since her husband's diagnosis when she was considering leaving the game. Neville has made it clear to her that she has the freedom to take whatever she wants. & # 39; I told her: & # 39; You write your own script. If you want to miss a day, miss a day & # 39; & # 39 ;, he says. & # 39; Football is not as important as what it goes through. & # 39;
But Houghton says her husband will not abandon her face. & # 39; I am here because I feel that I am right to be here & she says. & # 39; And it is powered by Stephen. He wants me to go. He says, "Get out of the house."
There is something about the captain of England who exudes responsibility and immovability

& # 39; happened, it would all depend on how Stephen is. He is my priority. If anything changes in the near future, it's my job to be the best woman I can be and take care of him. But at the moment everything is great. He's as good as ever.
& # 39; He comes to all my games and he is my biggest advocate and he does so many good things for other people that I don't know if I am hopeful in the next few months, it will all be announced.
& # 39; He is the ultimate inspiration for me and my family and he has been so strong. My focus is now on the World Cup and with my fingers crossed it never comes when I have to get off. If I am selected, he will eat the tournament. He is everywhere now. I also came to America last month for the SheBelieves Cup.
& # 39; Not playing football gives you the chance to take a break. He has been a professional since he was 16 and it gives him a chance to do what he wants to do and I fully support him in everything he wants to do. & # 39; Because she is the competitor she is, because she is as strong as she is, Houghton has continued to play as well as she has ever played. & # 39; I think she has become an even better leader, more determined & # 39 ;, says Neville. & # 39; She has had her best year in football & # 39;
& # 39; She will lead England to the tournament at a high level. They won the SheBelieves Cup by defeating Brazil and Japan with the US and there is a sense that the party has the perfect mix of youth and experience to be realistic challengers to the US, who are the holders, host from France and regular competitors, Germany.

& # 39; With the talent that we have in our team, the experience that we have
I know that I have improved enormously since the last World Cup and I went to Cana da, I had only been in City for half a season and it was my first time as a professional football player, training every day, eating the right things, playing football every minute of the day.
& I Since then I have become the role of captain. When I was appointed captain under Mark Sampson, there were many questions about whether I was ready. I was not a sure starter. I tried to find a way to get the job done, I tried to get a job, I tried to get a job, I was only 25, I tried to pin it down to a midpoint and it was a difficult situation
someone I was not. I tried to be everyone's partner. I tried to please everyone. But you are getting a little older, you realize that that is almost impossible. I went back to basics and realized that I had to earn the right to become a captain and from there it was about how I could develop as a leader.
The excitement about England's prospects is only part of the optimism surrounding women's football in this country. Last month, the Women & # 39; s Super League announced a three-year deal with Barclays that thought it was worth £ 10 million as a result of a change in the way the ladies' game is viewed. Last week, Boots announced a multi-million pound three-year deal to sponsor the homeland and Republic of Ireland women

& # 39; We can take the women's game as far as we want & & # 39 ;, Houghton says. & # 39; We need to support the competition and all players have full time, full time coaching and two strong divisions.
& # 39; I am a professional soccer player and I get paid for doing my job. It is not so long ago that I had to pay £ 250 a season to play. I don't think it will ever compete with the men in my life, but we've made so many big steps.
Away from the field, however, with a future that is heavy with uncertainty, it is now that it matters more to Houghton than anything else.
& # 39; That's not her & # 39 ;, says Neville. & # 39; She is not & # 39 ;, says Neville. & # 39; She is a humble person. She doesn't want to know anything about it. & # 39; De Houghton looks ahead to France this summer, the time refuses to stand still, she knows that this is her moment to seize the day for her husband, for her team and for herself.

Nobbs & fellow players excited for new WSL season
Various sports often herald a new season as being “the biggest yet”, but rarely has any competition witnessed as much change as the Women’s Super League has this summer.
After a transition to full-time, professional status, the restructured one-tier, 11-team WSL starts on Sunday.
With new teams, new rules and some new managers, plus Manchester United’s return to the senior women’s game, the 2018-19 campaign promises much.
So, after England and Scotland qualified for the 2019 Women’s World Cup, BBC Sport looks ahead to the return of England’s domestic league.
A completely full-time, professional league
The WSL’s first season in 2011 featured eight predominantly semi-professional sides. In contrast, this year there will be 11 strictly full-time teams in the top flight.
That comes after the Football Association – which runs the women’s leagues in England – brought in new licence criteria for clubs, meaning all teams had to re-apply for their places.
Closed and then open application processes followed, before promotions, relegations and multiple appeals, but the outcome is that 11 top-flight sides will all provide:
A minimum of 16 contact hours per week for players this season;
An academy, which is compulsory as part of the licence.
“Everyone knows that year-on-year this league has got stronger, and that is very much the case this year,” Everton boss Andy Spence told BBC Sport.
“Standards will go up again and the demands and expectations go up every year. That’s something that you drive yourself too, as a manager.”
The second tier – previously known as WSL 2 – has been rebranded as the Women’s Championship and is made up of 11 teams required to meet part-time criteria.
New teams – who has moved divisions?
Former England boss Hope Powell will lead Brighton in their first campaign as a full-time side
Newcomers Brighton and West Ham have joined the top tier this term after successful bids for full-time licences.
Sunderland, who finished seventh in tier one last season, have been moved down to tier three after not receiving a licence and making an unsuccessful appeal.
Meanwhile, Manchester United, who reformed their women’s side for the first time since 2005, plus Charlton, Crystal Palace, Leicester City, Lewes FC and Sheffield United have all joined the Championship.
United’s return has been welcomed by the FA’s Baroness Sue Campbell, who said their application was “a natural next step” and added that the FA were “delighted they have chosen to step in” this year.
However, last year’s second-tier champions Doncaster Rovers Belles were among those to drop down to the rebranded third tier, the National League, along with Oxford United, Sheffield FC and Watford.
Palace were not initially awarded a licence in May, but their original bid did meet the criteria and therefore they were promoted after the Belles joined Sheffield FC in withdrawing for financial reasons.
New managers, familiar names
Matt Beard – a two-time WSL winner in 2013 and 2014 when he was Liverpool boss – has taken charge of West Ham following their move up from tier three to tier one.
Bristol City appointed former Doncaster player Tanya Oxtoby as their new manager following the resignation of Willie Kirk, who has since become the assistant manager at Manchester United.
Former Leeds United men’s boss Neil Redfearn left the Belles to take the Liverpool job after Scott Rogers’ departure from Merseyside.
A further managerial change in the top tier saw Lee Burch appointed at Yeovil Town after Jamie Sherwood moved to become director of football of the Somerset side.
And, having been appointed in November 2017, Australian coach Joe Montemurro will begin his first full season at Arsenal after reaching two domestic cup finals and winning a trophy – the Continental Tyres League Cup – last term.
New signings – who did the best business?
Claire Rafferty (left), Jane Ross (centre) and Gilly Flaherty (right) are all now West Ham players
Having made vast additions to their squad to strengthen for top-flight football, West Ham’s summer arrivals included England left-back Claire Rafferty, as well as Scotland striker Jane Ross and Rafferty’s ex-Chelsea team-mate Gilly Flaherty.
Title hopefuls Manchester City, who finished second last term, have added to their forward line with Canada’s Janine Beckie.
Defending champions Chelsea’s new recruits include Birmingham defender Jess Carter and New Zealand’s Ali Riley, while striker Eniola Aluko left to join Juventus and heavily-decorated midfielder Katie Chapman retired.
Arsenal saw long-serving right-back Alex Scott also retire and they brought in Austria captain Viktoria Schnaderbeck, but she needed surgery after sustaining a knee injury in August.
There was a significant switch between the Merseyside clubs as Everton striker Courtney Sweetman-Kirk joined Liverpool, while Brighton snapped up Yeovil’s Wales star Kayleigh Green.
Birmingham City signed Sunderland’s Lucy Staniforth, while last season’s fourth-placed side Reading recruited England winger Gemma Davison from Chelsea.
“Gemma has that experience, understanding and knowledge of what it takes to win things,” said Royals boss Kelly Chambers.
“Every team she has been in, she has come away with medals and awards. She brings us something different.”
New names, as more clubs drop ‘ladies’ title
Another off-field aspect of the WSL that has evolved rapidly in recent months is that further teams have opted to change their names from “Ladies” to “Women”.
Nine of the 11 top-flight sides now either have “Women” in their name or have dropped a gender-distinguishing title altogether.
Upon changing their name in May, champions Chelsea said the move underlined the “ever-growing status” of the women’s game and was a move away from referring to the men’s side as the “first” team.
The 2018-19 teams in England’s top two women’s leagues FA Women’s Super League FA Women’s Championship Arsenal Aston Villa Birmingham City Charlton Athletic Brighton & Hove Albion Crystal Palace Bristol City Durham Chelsea Leicester City Everton Lewes Liverpool London Bees Manchester City Manchester United Reading Millwall West Ham United Sheffield United Yeovil Town Tottenham Hotspur
New, one-off rules on promotion & relegation
Finally, with this summer’s structural changes leaving 11 sides in each of the top two leagues, the FA confirmed in August their adjusted arrangements for promotion and relegation.
From the top flight, one side will be relegated at the end of 2018-19.
The top two sides in the Championship will be eligible to win promotion up to the WSL – providing they can meet the professional criteria for a licence next summer.
There will no relegation from the bottom of the Championship down to the third tier – the regionalised FA Women’s National League.
And, for one season only, up to two sides could win promotion from tier three to the Championship next summer – with both the Northern and Southern winners initially eligible, rather than just the winners of a traditional play-off between the two.
That is with view to seeing 12 teams in each of the top two divisions by 2019-20.
If the winner of either the Northern or Southern sections is unable to meet criteria for promotion, then the runner-up in that division will be offered the opportunity to apply to go up instead.
The FA then hopes to implement a consistent one-up, one-down system between the top three tiers from the 2019-20 campaign onwards.
Sunday’s fixtures (kick-off times in BST) involve all teams except top-flight newcomers West Ham, whose campaign begins on 19 September because of the odd number of sides in the league

Women's Super League: Teams confirmed for WSL and Championship after appeals
There will be 11 teams in the Women’s Super League and 11 in the Championship after the appeals process ended without any changes to the licences previously awarded by the Football Association.
Sunderland and Blackburn’s appeals were among those to be turned down, while the BBC understands there was at least one further unsuccessful appeal.
The revamped leagues will kick off on the weekend of 8-9 September.
Every side in the top flight will be required to meet professional criteria.

The final list of clubs in each division – released by the FA on Tuesday – confirmed that Sunderland will drop down to the third tier, the new FA Women’s National League.
The Lady Black Cats, who finished seventh in the WSL One last season, were the only top-flight side not to be awarded a spot in either of the top two divisions for 2018-19.
They did not apply in last year’s initial, closed application process, but did so in the second, open phase of applications in the spring, but were omitted when licences were awarded in May.
West Ham were moved up to the full-time WSL from the third tier, while Manchester United were among five clubs to join the second tier.
Blackburn won last season’s third-tier Northern Division but lost May’s third-tier play-off to Charlton, who subsequently did earn a licence.
“Naturally everyone is disappointed by the decision and the club will now look at how to move forward with its commitment to women’s football,” a Sunderland statement said.
“The club will continue in its support of women’s football and they have accepted a place within the FA Women’s National League.”
The 2018-19 teams in England’s top two women’s leagues FA Women’s Super League FA Women’s Championship Arsenal Aston Villa Birmingham City Charlton Athletic Brighton & Hove Albion Crystal Palace Bristol City Durham Chelsea Leicester City Everton Lewes Liverpool London Bees Manchester City Manchester United Reading Millwall West Ham United Sheffield United Yeovil Town Tottenham Hotspur
Since the initial licence announcement, Doncaster Rovers Belles and Sheffield FC both withdrew from the Championship for financial reasons.
Crystal Palace subsequently filled one of the vacated spots, having met the licence criteria and been deemed to be next in line to come up from the third tier.
All the clubs in the top two tiers will also take part in the Continental Tyres Women’s League Cup, which will begin on the weekend of 18-19 August.
