The Caribbean coastline of Riviera Maya is the epitome of paradise. Just imagine yourself laying back in a swaying hammock by the seaside with a coconut in hand.

Can you imagine a better vacation?

The truth is, I can.

My idea of the perfect vacation is a mix of the above, combined with authentic Mexican cuisine, served fresh and by the beachside. And to top it off, I would need a side of adventure.

So when I was looking for the ideal destination to visit, Belmond Maroma Resort and Spa located on the Riviera Maya in Mexico ticked all the boxes.

Stunning scenery, fine dining and adventure are all ample and awaiting your arrival.

Arriving at Belmond Maroma

Belmond Maroma is located just under an hour south of Cancun and 20 minutes north of Playa Del Carmen. As you arrive at Belmond Maroma, you pull off the highway and drive into the jungle before arriving at the stunning resort.

You will be greeted by the friendly staff as they take your bags from you, hand you an ice cold cocktail and check you into paradise.

And it only gets better and better. As you enter your room, you will find a plate of treats and fruit waiting for you, with Mexican music playing in the background to set the scene.

Belmond Maroma Resort and Spa

Belmond Maroma is located on the absolute beachfront. No matter what room you are staying in, you can be sure that you will only be a few steps from the Carribean Ocean.

You will find three swimming pools, one of which is an adults only pool. Some rooms also feature a private pool. The beachfront is lined with cabanas and daybeds, so you can be sure that you will find a place to relax for the day.

As you are relaxing by the pool or beachfront, the friendly staff will deliver poolside treats, every day from 11 – 3 pm. You can expect handmade sorbet, raspados (also known as shaved ice) topped with flavoured syrup, frozen fruits, popcorn with chilli, lemonade, and much more.

Onsite you will find 2 amazing restaurants, El Restaurante and El Sol, both offering 5-star beachfront views.

El Restaurante is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and serves Mexican style cuisine. The breakfast is fit for a king – tropical fresh fruits, homemade tortillas, eggs, Mexican hot chocolate and more. And it’s all you can eat! For lunch, might I suggest the guacamole and tlayuda, which is a Mexican style pizza, typical of the state of Oaxaca, YUM!

By night, El Sol opens and serves Mediterranean Mexican fusion, amazing.

Both restaurants source fresh local produce, straight from the farm to the table.

You can also visit Freddy’s Bar for an afternoon cocktail or snack.

Belmond has a pool room and a TV room on site as none of the bedrooms have TV’s, which I think is amazing. Who needs a TV anyway when you have the Caribean ocean to gaze at?

There are 4 rooms types at Belmond Maroma: Deluxe rooms, ocean view junior suites, master suites and oceanfront one bedroom suites.

We had the absolute pleasure of staying in an oceanfront one bedroom suite, room 66! I highly recommend requesting this room. But don’t worry if you can’t get it, every room at Belmond is amazing and only a few steps from the ocean.

Our oceanfront suite featured a private plunge pool that can be heated to double as a spa, a private gym, an outdoor shower, a bathtub fit for a king and a queen, the comfiest bed ever and unmatched ocean views. From bed, you can look straight out the window in front of you and see the beautiful Carribean ocean. You can also watch sunrise right from your bed or private pool. If you order the in-service coffee delivery, you will have a great to start to the day!

One thing is for sure and that is that you will never want to leave!

Adventures at Belmond Maroma

I am not going to lie. You will find it hard to leave Belmond Maroma because it is so amazing, but adventure awaits. The Riviera Maya has so many fun things to do, so you have to get out and explore at some point.

Belmond has a number of onsite activities for guests, and can also arrange tours on your behalf.

The current activity program is as follows:

Bike tours – Complimentary bike tours are available for guests from Monday to Saturday at 9.30 am. This is a great opportunity to explore the surrounding jungle setting and spot the local wildlife. If you are lucky, you may even see a spider monkey. And don’t be afraid if you see the occasional Iguana.

Yoga classes – Kinan Spa offers yoga for guests every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Mexican cuisine experiences – El Restaurante offers a number of activities for guests:

Tuesday – Authentic Cooking Classes

Wednesday – Cantina Night

Thursday – Mexican Party

Friday – Wine Tasting

Saturday – Mexican BBQ Night

Snorkelling and Scuba Diving – The worlds second largest coral reef lies off the shore of Belmond Maroma, making it the perfect place to try snorkelling and scuba diving. And guess what? Belmond Maroma has onsite PADI instructors so you can even get qualified during your stay. The friendly reception staff will happily arrange this for you.

Explore Cenotes – Cenotes are unique to the Yucatan Peninsular, so you absolutely must experience them for yourself during your visit. The hotel staff can arrange a tour for you!

Explore ancient Mayan sites – This region of Mexico is home to some of the most remarkable Mayan Ruin: Coba, Chichen Itza and the Tulum Ruins. Be sure to visit at least one Mayan Ruin for a complete experience of the region.

Sailing and Yachting – If laying by and swimming in the Caribbean Ocean isn’t enough, fear not. Belmond can arrange sailing and yachting tours on your behalf. A sunset cruise would make for an unforgettable experience. Or if you prefer you can grab a complimentary kayak and take yourself out for a paddle.

ATV and Zipline through the jungle – This one is for the thrill seekers out there! If adventure is what you are looking for, adventure is what you will find! Talk to the reception and they will be able to arrange a tour that suits all your adrenaline needs. Some tours even combine ATV, Ziplining, Snorkelling and cenotes into one day!

Kinan Spa

Any stay at Belmond should involve a trip to Kinan Spa. Kinan Spa is an award-winning spa and after visiting, you will understand why.

Guests are invited to use the wet rooms at any time during their stay and can choose from three amazing body scrubs to use in the wet room. All of the products used in Kinan Spa are locally sourced, organic and natural, and they all smell amazing. My skin was glowing after a trip to the wet room.

Guests can choose from one of the many treatments – massages, facials, manicures and pedicures and more. Kinan Spa also offers a range of traditional treatments. I had a mud massage and loved it. My therapist was in touch with my body and did an amazing job at helping me relieve tension in my sore spots.

The highlight of Belmond Maroma

The highlight of my stay was the friendly staff and high-quality service provided at every turn. Upon arrival at the security gate, I was greeted with a smile and sense of humour, and every staff member following delivered the same. I have no idea how Belmond managed to recruit such a friendly bunch of people, but they did. All staff are amazing.

It was also the little touches that made my stay extra special. On our final night, we came back to the room to find freshly baked cookies on our bed with a farewell note. This was an amazing surprise that made our stay all that more special. We were even given farewell treats upon check out!
