This may sound like an absurd topic to have statistics about, but it turns out that the average person spends a whopping three years of their life in the bathroom. That’s enough reason to have research on the quality of a space that we spend so much time in. That just makes us wonder about the importance toilets hold in our lives. If NASA can spend that much, it gives us incentive not to be stingy about our bathroom fitting brands in India, since we tend not to pay attention to this very fundamental aspect of our lives.

·         Larger cities in Sweden require you to pay to use public washrooms. This fund goes to the maintenance of the bathroom. This is done so that people respect and take better care of the facilities they are provided without taking them for granted. If you ever visit the country, make sure to use your hotel restroom before heading out.

·         An old Scottish custom involves any passer-by to use the residents’ restroom if required. This stems from an old law, which advocated free passage through someone’s land, and evolved into a custom of letting drunk people use their washrooms. Thankfully, it isn’t a law anymore but people still follow the tradition.

·         To raise awareness about sanitation and hygiene, especially considering that many developing countries still have huge populations without access to sanitation facilities, the United Nations General Assembly designated 19 November as World Toilet Day. This was an important move to direct people’s attention towards this imminent problem.

·         The Sulabh International Museum of Toilets in New Delhi hosts objects, pictures and information about how toilets have evolved through history, over the past 4,500 years. Imagine an entire museum dedicated just to toilets. After all, India’s Indus valley civilisation is renowned for its well-structured use of sewers and disposal.

·         There exists something as unimaginable as a toilet-themed restaurant in Taiwan, that takes its themes very seriously and serves food in very fascinating ways. It is called the Modern Toilet restaurant and sees a plethora of visitors every year.

·         Many dollars were spent by an American toilet paper company to conduct a survey on the manner in which they preferred to unwind toilet paper- over the spool or under the spool. Seventy two percent of the responders voted for over the spool.

I like museums. I like having my mind blown. I am clearly part of the target audience for this book.

Other things I appreciate about this book: It’s a manageable size, slightly larger than a postcard. It features a diverse range of museums, both major institutions and lesser-known, more eccentric collections. Its tone and faux Q&A format are breezy; the authors are like interesting friends who always have the best vacation stories. And like so many Lonely Planet books, it’s eminently flip-through-able.

My favorite section is on quirky museums: those passion projects of eccentric individuals that produce, say, a Turkish collection of women’s hair, or the Japanese museum of instant ramen. I’d love to see this section expanded, at the expense of the more standard museum picks. Yes, the British Museum and the Acropolis are amazing destinations, but they’re also very widely known already. The Watermelon Museum? Less so.

Another suggestion for the next edition, due out in 2020, is greater geographical reach. For one thing, the book includes only one museum in Africa. By 2020, I hope, I’ll have made it to all of the museums in this edition that I’ve bookmarked (or, more accurately, sticky note-d).
